Re About backup of centos

Hi, i have a little question but not sure if exist in centos. Theres any way to reotre all centos to default? like a goback or a security backup? im realtive new with this and want to do a full back up of centos before trying to install things. Also i really prefer to run a commands instead of do a fresh install of centos. Theres any like this?

Centos6 installed as virtual host

Dear All, I convinced my boss to buy me a new laptop, it arrived today! So now that I finaly have a X86_64 machine, I want to try Kvm. I'm very excited. I Anaconda I selected install as virtual host, but after install, update and reboot I try #[jvermeulen@it root]$ virt-manager Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virt-manager.py", line 383, in <module> main() File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virt-manager.py", line 286, in main raise gtk_error RuntimeError: could not open display I googled this, but found very little info about this type of Centos install. partprobe command showing error

Hi, I've created a new partition on /dev/sda on my CentOS machine after which fdisk -l gives output as: Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux /dev/sda2 14 3500 28009327+ 83 Linux /dev/sda3 3501 6527 24314377+ 83 Linux Now, when I run partprobe I get the following error: Error: Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/sda3 -- Device or resource busy. This means Linux won't know about any changes you made to /dev/sda3 until you reboot -- so you shouldn't mount it or use it in any way before rebooting. Warning: The kernel was unable to re-read the partition table on /dev/sda (Device or resource busy). This means Linux won't know anything about the modifications you made until you reboot. You should reboot your computer before doing anything with /dev/sda. I'm using parted rpm version "parted-1.8.1-29.el5". Is it some issue with this version or with the way I'm using this command? 2nd NIC troubles

Hi All, I have 2 NICS in this system. CentOS 6.4 eth0 is the virtual IP from PFSense mapping connected to the router, works fine. eth1 is a second NIC that I have assigned a private IP to and connected it to a switch on the private network. I have many other private devices, so I know this setup works. When I connect the cable to the switch and bring up eth1 the system basically stops taking requests. I can no longer SSH in, Websites stop responding, etc. If I walk over to the server and take down eth1, everything works fine. Also, when I check system-config-network-tui, some .bak, which I made, but deleted the files from the file system when I was trying a few things. But how do I get rid of them? Well, I'm *almost* there on my user's box with the old ATI card. Radeon driver, and I had one mistake, so now we can access both monitors. But... If I enable xinerama, I can have it work as one large screen, but xrandr is disabled (and the system->preferences->display doesn't work). And with xinerama, it still acts as though either it isn't getting 1280x1024 resolution, or the viewport (?) is bigger than the screens, and I have no viewport option. Also, when I shove the mouse off the screen, a portion, an "L" shape of maybe 25% or 30% of the screen, moves offscreen, and I can't make it come back. With xinerama disabled, xrandr is enabled, the system->preferences->display works, and I can move the mouse between monitors... but the systems sees them as separate, with their own menus at the top, and the display GUI only sees one monitor. Annoying, to say the least. Any X experts here that can suggest what I'm missing? inittab - huh what's it good for?

We run a CentOS-5 based hylafax server with external serial modems. We are transitioning to an Asterisk system using IAXmodem running on CentOS-6. On the CentOS-5 system to start the fax modems we added these lines to inittab: # Add fax lines and always ALWAYS run "telinit q" after making a change. fax1:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyS0 fax2:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyS1 On the CentOS-6 host we did this, in accordance with the instructions provided in the various README files and man pages. # send IA00:2345:respawn:/usr/bin/iaxmodem ttyIAX0 # receive mo00:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyIAX0 # send IA01:2345:respawn:/usr/bin/iaxmodem ttyIAX1 # receive mo01:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyIAX1 However, when I do an init q the faxgetty instances do not start. If I run faxgetty from the command line in detached mode for each of them (faxgetty -D ttyIAX0) then they do start. The iaxmodem instances are started from an init.d script as far as I can tell. They appear and disappear with service iaxmodem start and stop in any case and they most certainly do not respawn if the service is stopped. So, my question is: Does inittab have any use on el6 systems? What is its replacement? nfs4 and idmapd

I'm using CentOS5.9 and mounting a remote directory via NFSv4. The nfs server is OpenIndiana 151.a.7 (i.e. Solaris). Users bin and daemon have each others ID on the oposite system. On OpenIndiana: User: bin; ID=2 User: daemon; ID=1 On CentOS: User: bin; ID=1 User: daemon; ID=2 That means if I create a file as daemon on the client (CentOS), it gets saved on the server as owner bin and it shows back on the client as owner bin. My linux keeps logging me off when I run Firefox (how to debug)?

This is a strange one to me. Just recently, my Centos 6 has been "gentle crashing" where it doesn't crash, per se, but the screen goes black, and the login prompt pops up. It only happens when I run Firefox and it only started happening this morning. However, it has happened a dozen times, and always when Firefox is running. It does NOT happen when Firefox is not running. I haven't tested with Chrome yet; so that's my next test - but - the question I have is: How do I log the events that are causing Centos to log me out of user1 and to present the login screen?

New motherboard - kernel panic

I had to replace the motherboard on one of my CentOS 4 systems and am now getting a kernel panic. When I try to boot up, I get this: Volume group "VolGroup00" not found ERROR: /bin/lvm exited abnormally! (pid 448) mount: error 6 mounting ext3 mount: error 2 mounting none switchroot: mount failed: 22 umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! (I apologize for any typos, I don't have a way to copy/paste from that screen) I can boot up with the boot CD, go into rescue mode and browse the files, so I know the drives are ok. I found some stuff online saying that I should recreate my initrd from rescue mode if the motherboard changed. I tried this, but am still getting the same results. Suggestions? Thanks, -- Bowie

Regarding : ATI video driver problems

I gather from the discussion on the reference thread that I'll be having quite a time with a MB having an Integrated ATI Radeon HD 3000 graphics chip set and a video card using a Radeon HD 6570 chip set when I try to run CentOS 6.4 on it. I was going to ask if CrossFire works with CentOS, but it appears that the integrated chip set isn't going to work at all. Well, ignoring all that, is CrossFire supported by any of the drivers available for CentOS 6.4? If no then what about SLI support? I don't want to paint myself into a corner by building a computer that I'll never get working to full potential. Anyway, here's my wish list as it stands at the moment. I did a quick test on el5 and el6 with these package, httpd-2.2.3-43.el5.centos httpd-2.2.15-15.el6.centos.1.i686 I kept the configuration as what it is in default. The index page is about 7k, 100 connections per second. I barely find the connection is marked as R. Mostly C and _. This is done by ab from httpd. I also did a quick test with slow attack. It's basically slowing the client itself to collect the data from the server. I did 200 connections per second. My server is ok seems. User got upgraded to 6.4. Graphical mode video fails. It's an AMD (nee ATI) RV620 (FirePro 2260). So I finished upgrading everything, including kmod-fglrx. Based on the xorg.conf's on there, it's been using the fglrx. Now, in Xorg.0.log, it tells me "no supported AMD display adapters were found". I've been on-and-off googling for hours, and can't figure out if the "legacy" kmod-nvidia from elrepo will work: their info *ONLY* lists Radeon cards, and I can't figure out what this damn thing is. Oh, lspci -v tells me it's "ATI device 2343". Anyone know what this card is like (AMD shows three different models of the same name, and I have no idea which it is, and none uses a Radeon name), and what driver I might use, or do I have to downgrade X.... mark, extremely tired of his user's machine

Arch = x86_64 OS = CentOS-6.3 (FreePBX) Asterisk = 11.3.0 (FreePBX) Hylafax+ = 5.5.3 (epel) I am installing an Asterisk server with the intent of having it act as our fax server. The Asterisk system was installed using the current FreePBX distro which is reputedly based on CentOS-6.3. I have installed Hylafax+ from epel and I have built and packaged IAXModem-1.2.0 for CentOS-6 using mock and installed that on the Asterisk host. I am past the point of setting up Asterisk and configuring extensions and users. I am able to place and receive internal calls to and from SIP devices and place and receive external calls over a PSTN analogue trunk. The echo generated by the SIP clients is terrible but that problem can wait until I get to dealing with voice service implementation. At the moment I am trying to get Hylafax configured. I have done this in the past albeit for systems using external serial modems. I am at the point of running the faxstup utility which builds the necessary hylafax configuration files. I am getting these errors from the utility: Setting Ghostscript font path in /etc/hylafax/hyla.conf. Warning: /usr/local/lib/ghostscript/fonts does not exist or is not a directory! Though I've used version control systems before and even set up a couple over the years, and though it was simple to setup a github repository (which I did just a couple minutes ago), I can't figure out how to upload the first file to it. I'm logged in, on the repository's home page, but can't see an option for that. I also read instructions for set up on the web and the git manpage, but no help there. Anybody here know to put a code file into the repository? Thanks.

Dovecot rpms: requesting a minor enhancement

Greetings, What's the process for requesting minor enhancements to packages? Currently, CentOS dovecot rpms ship w/o having tcp_wrappers enabled; to have dovecot compiled with tcp_wrappers requires adding one directive to the to the dovecot.spec file in the srpm. If the directive isn't there, then any dovecot upgrades via YUM/RPM require first to have the RPMs recompiled before doing the upgrade. rsync - why not copying all files?

I am doing a new setup, got most of the files in place from other places and then ran my rsync backup from the command line before putting it in crontab. Here is the rsync: rsync -ah --stats --delete /home/ /mnt/sdc1/backups/homebase/home Note that the directory ..../homebase/home did not exist prior to this command; it created it. So here are the stats: Number of files: 6190 Number of files transferred: 5944 Total file size: 4.25G bytes Total transferred file size: 4.25G bytes Literal data: 4.25G bytes Matched data: 0 bytes File list size: 263.95K File list generation time: 0.001 seconds File list transfer time: 0.000 seconds Total bytes sent: 4.25G Total bytes received: 113.93K sent 4.25G bytes received 113.93K bytes 29.60M bytes/sec total size is 4.25G speedup is 1.00 Why would files transferred be less than the number of files? For example, is there some option I need to move hidden files? I do not believe there are any symlinks under /home. Thanks for any help in puzzling this out. I would be greatly upset if some key file was not being backed up.

Hello all, Let's say I have an OpenVPN (v2) server sitting on a Linux machine with the IP address of, say, 192.168.10.1o. We are talking real address, assigned to a NIC on the machine. Now let us say the OpenVPN server hands out IP's in the 192.168.20.0/24range. And let us say that I want the machines able to reach the VPN server to be able to route to the machines available via the VPN. So, for instance, 192.168.10.5 should be able to ping 192.168.20.6 assuming the latter is one of the VPN clients. So here is my question: is there a VPN setting that would facilitate that? It seems like is is trivial enough to allow the VPN clients to route out through the VPN server - but trying to facilitate the reverse I got stuck. Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers, Boris.

xfsaild causing load, and stuck in D state - Centos 6.4 x64

PowerEdge 2850 with PERC SCSI RAID controller. 16GB RAM Dual Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.00GHz Using megaraid driver and xfs on 3x 300GB SCSI disks as /dev/sdb (total 572GB) (RAID-5) Stock Centos 6.4 x64, everything updated. Kernel : 2.6.32-358.2.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP My Load always shows : top - 10:30:21 up 23:09, 1 users, load average: 0.99, 0.96, 0.79 yet there is no services what-so-ever doing anything. Using PowerTOP I can see that xfsaild is causing second most wake-ups (after kernel core : hrtimer_start (tick_sched_timer) ) < Detailed C-state information is not P-states (frequencies) 3.00 Ghz 100.0% 1500 Mhz 0.0% 1125 Mhz 0.0% 750 Mhz 0.0% 375 Mhz 0.0% Wakeups-from-idle per second : 125.1 interval: 10.0s no ACPI power usage estimate available Top causes for wake-ups: 47.7% (119.6) <kernel core> : hrtimer_start (tick_sched_timer) 39.9% (100.0) xfsaild/sdb1 : xfsaild (process_timeout) Again, using TOP I can see that xfsaild is stuck in D state. It never changes. 10050 root 20 0 0 0 0 D 0.0 0.0 0:01.17 xfsaild/sdb1 My only way to fix this, is either rebooting the machine, unmounting the volume and mounting it back online. I've been rsyncing data twice between this server and another one. The rsync process takes about 30m-1hour. After the rsync operation I see that the xfsaild is stuck in D State and my Load is near 1.00. I'v had no problem what-so-ever on centos 6.3 or early versions on other servers. Any thoughts ? We build a storage unit that anyone using Centos can build. It is based on the 3ware 9750-16 controller. It has 16 x 2 TB Sata 6 gb/s disks. We always set it up as a 15 disk RAID 6 array and a hot spare. We have seen multiple instances were the A/C has gone off but the customer's UPS kept the systems running for an hour or two with no cooling. Once the ambient temperature goes above 40C you are stressing all the disks in the array. I ramble about this BECAUSE we have seen many RAID 5 arrays fail while rebuilding with a hot spare and then loose all the data. The chances of this happening on a R6 array are much much lower. Now for performance numbers: 550 MB/SEC on writes and 1150 MB/SEC on reads. A unit like this can support any type of I/O you want to put into it as Centos will usually either have thedrivers built in or you can add then easily. Also the rebuild time for a 50 TB array is about 12 hours while the array is in use and online. But during this time there is little or no degradation in performance. The down side is the cost of the controller. If anyone has questions about this I would be glad to answer them off line : at seth at integratedsolutions dot org. How to change 'fstab' when you cannot boot the machine?

Hello All, So My Drobo finished formatting and I added an entry to fstab for it and now I cannot boot the machine. I get an error about fsck.ext3: is a directory while trying to open /drobo and then a mention of a valid super block I had mounted the Drobo as /drobo and in 'fstab' I copied the line for '/' changing to ext3 where it was ext4. I have made a mistake I cannot fix it because trying to edit fstab results in a "read only file system message" Can anyone help me learn how to recover? Jason

floppy drives

Yes, really. I've got hundreds of the damn things here at home, and I want to go through them and get rid of them all. But... to do that I want to read them. I have both a 5.25" and a 3.5" drive, both are plugged in, but in the BIOS, all I see is the 3.5". Fine, I figure I'll take care of those. Nope. I see /dev/fd0 once I've booted up, but neither konqueror nor mount nor fdisk works - the latter telling me that /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device. After some googling, I tried modprobe floppy, which installed it, but still no joy. Anyone have a clue? mark

Formatting a USB Drive

Hi All, I have a Drobo, connected to a CentOS 6.4 box. The box sees it as /dev/sdg. I want to format it ext3 (as they dont support ext4) but when I try I get: # fdisk -u /dev/sdg WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sdg'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted. WARNING: The size of this disk is 17.6 TB (17592186044416 bytes). DOS partition table format can not be used on drives for volumes larger than (2199023255040 bytes) for 512-byte sectors. Use parted(1) and GUID partition table format (GPT). WARNING: DOS-compatible mode is deprecated. It's strongly recommended to switch off the mode (command 'c'). So I run: # parted GNU Parted 2.1 Using /dev/sda Welcome to GNU Parted! Type 'help' to view a list of commands. (parted) select /dev/sdg Using /dev/sdg (parted) print Model: DROBO DroboPro (scsi) Disk /dev/sdg: 17.6TB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags (parted) and looking at an example of creating a partition: (parted) mkpart primary 106 16179 I dont know what to do next since I dont see any partitions listed. I dont know what do to for the start and end point, although the man page says "size in MB". Do I just say 0 to (and convert 16.0TB to MB? Yes, I know it says 17.6 TB but this model drobo can only support partitions up to 16tb without making a second partition. Can anyone provide some advice on that I am missing conceptually? Jason

Hi, all: I'm playing with Gre Tunnel programming in centos 6. I wrote my program in these steps: a, open /dev/net/tun device and ioctl with TUNSETIFF, get fd to tun device, say "tun0"; b, create one socket and use it to set tun0's ip address, namyly SIOCSIFADDR and SIOCSIFDSTADDR; and then turn it up; c, create one raw socket to send things which got from the tun0 device to other machine, and to receive packages which should be feeded into the tun0 device; Finally, I ran the program in two machines, say MA and MB, synchronously, and set route info in MA and MB too. Is the raw package been sent up into gre protocol while caught by my program?? I have seen ICMP_PORT_UNREACH stuff been placed in ip_gre.c kernel code, but say it is "Impossible event". So, what's wrong, have I missed something in my program? Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

About centos fresh install

Hi, first of all i want to thank you all that do this help. Without this i cold never put my own webserver. Now my question. I know when i have to install some software, they recommend a "fresh" install of centos, but my provider (we have server via internet and webmin) every fresh install says that i need to pay like 50$ ( alittle expensive for me). Im live i Costa RIca and here internet sucks thats why i use panama server. Now my question is: theres any form to restore to "default" a centos server? like windows 8 or like norton goback? i searh a lot via google but not sure if theres no way or i dont know how to search it. Sorry for my bad english. Hope could help me this time
