autofs update brakes nested automount

On my CentOS5 boxes the automounter fails after the last update to autofs.x86_64 1:5.0.1-0.rc2.177.el5 No update is seen on CentOS6 and things still work there. The home directory of users is setup using an auto.home map which is distributed using NIS: * fsutrecht02:/export/home/& /nobackup -noacl nasutrecht01:/nobackup/& /snapshot -ro fazant:/home_backup/ This maps a users home directory and and two subfolders ~/nobackup and ~/snapshot Now I see this in my logs: automount[6510]: parse_mount: parse(sun): can't find multi root thba I found that this still works: * fsutrecht02:/export/home/& The nested folders do no longer work. If the wildcard is removed, works: thba fsutrecht02:/export/home/& /nobackup -noacl nasutrecht01:/nobackup/& /snapshot -ro fazant:/home_backup/ Any idea how wildcards can be made to work (again) with nested mounts? Hey, folks, I just saw Johnny mention 5.9 yesterday, and this morning, my manager tells me he got about 100 emails from somewhere about 5.9 and a CR repo. So, my questions to the team is: is there a CR repo, and is there some urgency to enabling it, or shall we just wait for the release? The *only* thing I can think of having real issues with is the newest PIV cards.... mark

Share GFS2 partition freezes when new node add in the cluster

Hi all. I need support about GFS2 and RHCS. Actually I have cman cluster formed by 9 nodes. All works whitout problems but when I try to include a new node in the cluster I must reboot all nodes because share partition GFS2 freezes. cman_tool status not show "Blocked activity" in each node and in logs all apears normally whitout any WARNING or ERROR in /var/log/cluster/* I have not found solution about this and I'm desperate. Hi All, I have been wrestling with this problem for months now and at my wits end. The sound is always very low and if I try to bring the sound louder by using the sound references icon on the top panel, the sound is choppy with lots of static. Output of lspci for the sound device is as follows: 01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GF108 High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1) Please, could someone help me out to get this irritating problem solved? Hi. my name is Giacomo Sanchietti and I'm working for a company called Nethesis. We are working on a CentOS derived distribution like SME Server. It's a minimal CentOS with a software layer on top to add a web configuration interface. The CD iso, it's a CentOS minimal CD with some extras packages from centos-base yum group, and a kickstart file to automatize the installation process. We did not rebrand anaconda, so during installation (and first boot) CentOS logo and name will be visible. Is this a problem? Are there any legal issues? Do we need to rebrand all the distro? Off-Topic: Low Power Hardware

Hello, I'm slightly off-topic here, but it is somewhat CentOS related! I'm in search of some hardware that consumes a low amount of power for use as a test-bed for Linux, various coding projects, and LAN services. 1) Low power consumption (10-15W ... maybe 30W at most) 2) Must run Linux without too much fuss (CentOS or otherwise) 3) Must have two NICs (fast ethernet or better) 4) Memory - 1GB or better 5) Can be configurable either via serial or VGA. 6) Accepts a normal hard drive, not CF -- drive capacity is my concern. 7) spare PCI slot is a _plus_ (extra NICs or whatever else) 8) I'd like to keep the physical footprint to a minimum (size of a 1U switch or so?) Old Sun/Cobalt hardware (Raq4) from the early 2000s was brought to my attention by a friend, but that hardware is in low supply and the prices are outrageous for the specs/age of machine. *** I'm curious if there's certain hardware that you folks are using and fit all/most of my criteria. *** It would be cool if they made a Raspberry Pi with dual onboard NICs, but it still doesn't cut it since it takes SD cards and not a hard drive. Adding CA/Root SSL / TLS Certificate, HTTPS

Hi, I need to add my own and other/new self-signed ca/root cert in CentOS pki database/system, for all/most type of apps to use. Using "wget", i'm trying to securely(HTTPS) get gpg keys/files from https://fedoraproject.org/keys site, which is using root cert with following info: CN = GeoTrust Global CA O = GeoTrust Inc. C= US MD5 f7:75:ab:29:fb:51:4e:b7:77:5e:ff:05:3c:99:8e:f5 I have tried: wget https://fedoraproject.org/static/DE7F38BD.txt But 'wget' showed following warning, its not able to verify cert & failing to download file over HTTPS : [wget msg] ... Connecting to fedoraproject.org|85.236.55.6|:443... connected. ERROR: certificate common name *.fedoraproject.org fedoraproject.org To connect to fedoraproject.org insecurely, use --no-check-certificate. [end of wget msg] Also tried: rpm --import https://fedoraproject.org/static/DE7F38BD.txt but no new gpg key inside the /etc/pki/rpm-gpg directory HOW TO MANUALLY ADD CA/ROOT CERT IN CENTOS ? (as I need to add OTHER self-signed root cert in CentOS pki database, for all apps to use). so that wget, rpm or other apps can use them without warning. if a self-signed CA/root cert is added in /etc/nssdb/cert8.db then would it allow apps which use nssdb, to use the new root cert automatically ? how to manually add new root cert inside cert8.db or cert9.db ? is it using sqlite ? and, if a self-signed CA/root cert is added inside /etc/pki/tls/certs/ca-bundle.trust.crt or in /etc/pki/tls/certs/ca-bundle.crt then would that allow apps which use it to automatically use this/these CA-bundles ? what apps can be used to manually add more CA/root certs in those bundles ? can OpenSSL or GnuTLS be used to print out root cert in the format (compatible with and) which can be added inside those CA-bundles ? Storing and restoring sound settings

Hello, I have made a bootable CD (with revisor) of CentOS 6. The CD boots and starts a game automatically (for an exhibition). I have one problem: The default sound settings are not correct. After the machine is booted, I have to open gnome-volume-control, select "Hardware", and select "Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output" under "Profile". How can I set this up automatically? Hey everyone, I'm trying to compile a document to send out to our customers that outlines the minimum and recommended requirements to run C4, C5, and C6. Does anyone know the particulars? When we order systems, it's usually Pentium Dual Core CPU, 120GB+ Hard drive, 2GB Ram. I need the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM requirements to install and run any of the aforementioned flavors as a "basic server". Using postfix in CentOS 6 to relay mails to First.Last@gmail.com

Hello fellow CentOS users, I'm using: # cat /etc/*release CentOS release 6.3 (Final) # rpm -qa | grep post postfix-2.6.6-2.2.el6_1.x86_64 on 2 servers: preferans.de and (yes, funny name) static.103.78.9.176.clients.your-server.de I own several domains and would like all incoming mails addressing those domains to be forwarded to my Gmail address. So I have setup the MX-records for my domains: # host videoskat.de videoskat.de has address 176.9.40.169 videoskat.de mail is handled by 100 static.103.78.9.176.clients.your-server.de. videoskat.de mail is handled by 10 preferans.de. # host balkan-preferans.de balkan-preferans.de has address 176.9.40.169 balkan-preferans.de mail is handled by 100 static.103.78.9.176.clients.your-server.de. balkan-preferans.de mail is handled by 10 preferans.de. Quesstion on "remote password for maintenance"

I have a remote "centos 5" box that has no errors on screen, has nothing saying anything is wrong, however at boot it says "give remote password for maintenance". I had my remote person login and issue "e2fsck -y /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda3" for my two partitions and reboot and it comes back with the same prompt. What maintenace is it wanting???? Thanks, jerry

wiping out data on a disk (no physical acess to the machine)

Hi, I need to securely wipe out a disk on a remote machine, but I don't have access to that machine. Therefore I cannot use the LiveCD+shred (or dd) combination. Besides manually shreding known data files, I am wondering if there is a (free) tool that can be used in my case. Thanks.

All of the required components are present, but it's up to admins to do all of the integration work.

Upgrading Python with NumPy, SciPy and Mayavi on a CentOs 6.2 (Rocks 6.0) cluster

Hi, We are looking for some guidance in installing an upgraded Python on our cluster. Our cluster was installed with Rocks 6.0, is running CentOs 6.2, and has python-2.6.6, gcc-4.4.6. We would like to install an upgraded version of Python along with the following modules NumPy Scipy (which will require a compatible version of the Atlas libraries) Mayavi (which will require a compatible version of vtk) We were wondering if anyone has experience in installing these packages, what are the best combinations of compatible versions, what other upgrades will be needed (e.g. will we need to upgrade the gnu compilers to install the latest versions) and where these should be installed (local disks, /share/apps, other?). A little more background, our students are currently working with a local installation using Python-2.7.1 numpy-1.5.1 scipy-0.9.0b1 Mayavi-3.4.0 ATLAS-3.8.3 vtk-5.4 We would like to install these packages in a more appropriate, cluster-wide area and upgrade these packages as appropriate. We are also aware of a Rocks python roll which contains python-2.7.2 and an upspecified version of NumPy (is it possible to find out which version, before installing the roll?). gigantic memory leak in Clock Applet...

I've discovered recently that something on my Centos 5.8 box (up to date) is hogging a ton of RAM. so a little while ago I sat and watched top for a while. it showed (sorry, I didn't take screen shots or write this down, so the numbers are a bit rough) that out of 8 gigs of swap, around 2 1/2 was in use, and all the RAM (except for the little the kernel keeps for itself) was in use (it's got 4 gigs). this might not sound bad, but there's hardly ever anything big running on this box, it's just my home desktop machine used mostly for web browsing/music/email and similar. so, watching top run for a while I could eventually make out that something had "1.6g" flashing in the "RES" column. slowing the refresh a little I saw that it was "clock applet". so I killed the clock applet and restarted it, then clock applet showed "11m" in the "RES" column, and the unused RAM was suddenly like a gig and 3/4, or so, and the swap used slowly started dropping while the free ram began being used up, as it normally should. as I continue to watch it run (10-15 mins later) I can see that clock applet is now showing 14m in the RES column, so it's still growing. Hi, Short version: If I had a CPU with the aes-ni [1] feature would luks use it? I know that Upstream Vendors Security Guide [2] says: ...snip The default cipher used for LUKS (refer to cryptsetup --help) is aes-cbc-essiv:sha256 (ESSIV - Encrypted Salt-Sector Initialization Vector). Note that the installation program, Anaconda, uses by default XTS mode (aes-xts-plain64) snap... I also found a notion in the forums that maybe only aes-cbc is using aes-ni [3] and that could mean that after a install aes-ni is not used at all. Does anyone know about this or has experiences? Any attempt by the kernel to read any filesystem is likely to cause a panic before wiping is complete. If you want to completely wipe a disk, you need the root filesystem to be somewhere else.

Why is localhost self-signed cert a CA cert?

I am building a mail server on Centos 6.3 and working with OpenSSL to create a self-signed certificate for mail use. Along the line of learning the 'best' options to use for OpenSSL and dealing with the default SSL virtual host for Apache, I discovered that the localhost cert created (I believe) during firstboot has the X509v3 extensions set as a CA cert (eg basicConstraint CA:TRUE). I was once very involved in PKIX and legal issues on certificate policy. Having the localhost cert being a CA cert, thus allowed to sign other certs, MAY have legal implications in the USofA and EU. Why was this chosen? Why is not -extensions v3_req used in the certificate creation? I ended up just bailing, took a USB key installed it (it showed up as /dev/sda) and installed grub to the MBR there so now I can boot. grub issues on reinstall.

Hi all. sorry for an immediate question after subscribing, but I've managed to back myself into a frustrating corner. I've done some googling and come up dry, I figured I should try to post to the list while I dig through the archives. I have an issue with grub on a centos reinstall. my system previously had 1x 120g ide drive, 3 1tb sata drives in raid 5 md, 2 300 g in a raid 1 md,the /boot partition was on the ide drive, os on the raid 1 in a volume group and everything seemed fine. I downloaded the x86_86 iso a few days back and decided to just to a complete reinstall rather than burn myself with some odd upgrade path trying to put newer, larger drives into a md with a much smaller drive. I've since purchased some new drives and changed to 1 120 ide, 4 1 tb sata, 2 3tb sata. I've tried a few different combinations of install locations (e.g reused the ide as /boot, a 512 mb slice from a 1tb drive for /boot) but every layout I try seems to end up with a grub config that can not find the OS (if memory serves, the message comes back as error 15: file not found, hit return to reboot) the thing that seems odd to me is when I do the reinstall, the hdds seem to start much higher than I'd expect. there's no /dev/sda, b, c, d, ... I think they start at i. does anyone have some suggestions for what to try for this issue? Thanks. -- Even the Magic 8 ball has an opinion on email clients: Outlook not so good.

Building Dovecot CentOS 5 RPMs with custom LDAP packages

Hi, We are (still) mainly using CentOS 5 (5.8 x86_64). As CentOS / EL 5 standard OpenLDAP packages are rather old (2.3.x), we've been using LTB OpenLDAP packages ( http://ltb-project.org/wiki/download#openldap) which get installed in non-standard file system locations. I am not much experienced in building RPMs and preparing spec files. We are currently using dovecot RPM packages from the atrpms repo (http://packages.atrpms.net/dist/el5/dovecot/) I would like to re-build Dovecot packages based on the LTB OpenLDAP RPM packages (OpenLDAP v2.4.x), esp. because I see that ATRPMs Dovecot RPM packages are built using OpenLDAP v2.3 devel code (i.e. standard CentOS OpenLDAP devel packages). In http://dl.atrpms.net/all/dovecot.spec I see: ------------------------------------------------ BuildRequires: openldap-devel, cyrus-sasl-devel ... Hi, on CentOS 6.3 (32-bit) current & default GnuTLS is version 2.8.5-4.el6_2.2 gnutls.i686 ( where can i get a src rpm for at-least trying it from a 2nd/different directory ? ) Can someone kindly point to an article that will help to effectively upgrade to GnuTLS v3.1.1 or later+stable version, on CentOS 6.3 (32-bit) ? IE 9 not sending digest auth info

I migrated our internal wiki server last week, and some IE users aren't able to authenticate. The service is hosted by Apache using Digest authentication. It migrated from Apache 2.2.9 (Debian 5) to Apache 2.2.15 (CentOS 6). The internal hostname for the wiki server is a DNS CNAME that was repointed from one host to another during the cutover. In a normal session, 1. Client sends GET 2. Server sends 401 with WWW-Authenticate header 3. Client sends GET with Authorization header 4. Server sends 200 with Authentication-Info header and page content When using IE 9 (and possibly 8, I'm still trying to track that down), 1. Client sends GET 2. Server sends 401 with WWW-Authenticate header 3. Client resends GET (*without* Authorization header) 4. Server sends 401 with WWW-Authenticate header 5. Etc. IE seems to be ignoring 401 and/or the WWW-Authenticate headers. Using Chrome on Windows works fine; the issues are specific to IE. Any ideas? In http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Amavisd there is a recommendation to NOT use the version that comes with Centos 6.3, but to get the more current version from RPMForge. Is this the 'correct' thing to do on a Centos-based mail server?

Fencing a Dell T110 II

I think I know the answer to this question based on all of the research I've done, but figured I'd ask anyway. I needed a couple of servers for an HA cluster, and our "order" guy here ordered me a couple of Dell PowerEdge T110 II. I'd planned on using IPMI to fence these things with, but later found out that this model is only one of two PE servers Dell sells that has a stripped down BMC on it, and allows only local access. It's my fault for not looking closer at the specs, but I figured a PowerEdge server would have the stuff I needed. So now I'm looking for a way to fence these without purchasing more equipment. I thought maybe IF-MIB, but I can't discover enough about that to determine whether that'll work for me. I find it strange that using Conga (luci) from a third administration server I can reboot these two Dell nodes, and wonder why that works, how it's done, and why that wouldn't work as a fence method. Any one dealt with this particular Dell PE and fencing in any form other than using something like an APC fence? Thanks for any suggests. I've pretty much wore Google out, and I'm now in that round-robin mode of results where everything leads back to the same pages on different servers. steve campbell

Hi, another user on different mailing list pointed out openssl 1.0.1c from fedora 18 will work on centos 6.3, and also warned on replacing core components, and i also know as well, various other component starts to fail/stop working, like openssh, etc, if not properly pre-configured after a upgrade. Can anyone point out to a detail helpful & working article ? which will help on replacing CentOS 6.3 older 1.0.0-25 openssl with the latest+stable openssl 1.0.1c ? initially i was able to compile/load them on a different/2nd directory, and manually/directly use them. but would be very helpful if default openssl could be upgraded. intel video driver

I just installed centOS 5 on a new pc and everything works very well, apart the video driver that is not recognized by X and so I get no graphics hardware acceleration (glxgears is very unresponsive). lspci reports: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) while Xorg.0.log reads: (--) PCI:*(0:2:0) Intel Corporation unknown chipset (0x0102) rev 9, Mem @ 0xe0c00000/22, 0xd0000000/28, I/O @ 0x3000/6 I've been searching for an rpm for adding the right driver with no success. sysctl -p at startup?

I understand that the contents of /etc/sysctl.conf should be read and executed at system startup. However that never happens and I have to run sysctl -p after every reboot to get the settings I want. This is happening on every CentOS machine and VM I have. I can see in the startup scripts that "sysctl -e -p /etc/sysctl.conf >/dev/null 2>&1" is run at start up by the "apply_sysctl" function, yet the settings are never correct unless I run sysctl -p on the command line. Anybody know why that would be? I am running the latest updates on CentOS 6.3 Emmett

nm-applet in gdm still possible?

Greetings, Does anyone know if it is still possible to make use of the NetworkManager applet during a log on session? The reason why would be to have roaming users setup/manage (w)lan/vpn connections before logging in. Several searches hinted on either copying or linking /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop to /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow but that has not worked thus far. I had a major HD failure and need to rebuild my host server and the virtual servers that resided on it. I am moving from CentOS 5.6 to CentOS 6.3. I am using the same configuration, as best as I can tell, that was working only hours ago on 5.6 but does not work on 6.3. My guest server can see network traffic on the bridged network device but I cannot seem to interact with it. After performing a reboot in VM (Virtualbox), log user on gnome not display the desktop.

After performing a reboot in VM (Virtualbox) which had been stopped, the User logs in but does not display the desktop leaving only the background image. The services are all active, can access and use the VM via ssh, but the Desktop died. I do not know where to begin to solve this problem. Any idea? Hi, Is someone has some experience with a nice freeware tool like "DropBox" that I can use on CentOS apache server. I see owncloud, it's a nice tool that I can use with my AD server.
