yum install make does not work

I try to install make (should be present in base): yum install make Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, refresh-packagekit, security Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile * base: mirrors.supportex.net * epel: mirror.nl.leaseweb.net * extras: mirrors.supportex.net * rpmforge: archive.cs.uu.nl * updates: mirrors.supportex.net Setting up Install Process No package make available. Error: Nothing to do This is a fresh install of CentOS6 (starting with a minimal install). All repositories seem to be working. I issued a yum clean and even removed the cache manually. A machine with a similar setup works as expected (yum remove make;yum install make). This problem prevents me from installing group server-platform. Since I started with a core installation by accident (wanted a Desktop) I simply Googled for the list of groups needed: Default grouplist: base core debugging directory-client java-platform network-file-system-client server-platform fonts print-client basic-desktop desktop-debugging desktop-platform general-desktop graphical-admin-tools input-methods legacy-x x11 internet-applications internet-browser office-suite remote-desktop-clients I was able to install all these groups except server-platform. And this boils down to not being able to install make. Nvidia forcedeth stops working

I just installed CentOS 6.3 on a Tyan motherboard and the NIC stopped talking after about 2 days of operation. It's connected to a Cisco 2950 switch. /var/log/messages has this in it: nv_stop_tx: TransmitterStatus remained busy I simply did an "ifdown eth0" and "ifup eth0" to bring it back to life again. I think I have this issue: <http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=18183> Is this a regression? Any suggestions on what I can try here?

yum vs. freenx

Is there any way (besides being awake when you do it...) to keep freenx updates from killing yum mid-transaction if you run the update in a freenx session? Normally I ssh in from a session on a different host but sometimes forget... -- Les Mikeselll lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Not a biggie, but definitely annoying: I try to register for a media site, so I can put in a comment, and every time I hit "register", noscript pops up telling me it's protecting me from cross-site scripting... and if it's giving me any way to say, "that's ok for this site", I don't see it. I've tried typing in a pattern for xss, and no joy. Clues for the annoyed? mark

Yum Segfaulting

Hi All, I have a Centos 5.8 system with relatively little memory, that runs in rl3, where yum has decided not to work any more. Rebuilt the rpm database. Cut yum.repos.d down to just Centos-Base. I've manually cleared its cache. I've stopped most other processing to get the free memory to around 300K and yum still segfaults. I don't really feel like managing this system with just rpm :-( Any ideas where to look - I'm a bit stumped. dm-multipath do not autoscan partition table

Hello I am wondering if anyone este tried this. I Have few CentOS 6.2 systems that are running KVM virtual machines. As storage backend for them I use 2 iscsi targets (based on openindiana). For accessing these disks I use dm-multipath, since I use 2 separate networks for access. For these reasons I want host system to force not to scan dm-multipath disks for partitions. Hi, I have two 64 bit cent Os machine. I googled that in linux always show entire memory as used. But below showing only 1 GB detected. *Machine 1 :* i) It has 31 GB of ram. Whether the following information is complete or entirely correct or contains redundancies I will leave for others to comment upon. hi all, I have a problem with my CentOS 6.3 distribution only when I restart or turn off the machine it does not restart properly. remains in both cases black screen and then I do not understand exactly what he's doing. grub after I hit send and then darkness. only after that forcement for a further time the power cycle then it works. the kernel version is 2.6.32-279.14.1.el6.i686 where is the problem? thanks in advance cheers

grub.conf corrupt in boot grub, fine in rescue shell

I'm trying to load CentOS 6.3 on a used server based on a Tyan Tomcat n3400b motherboard. The first 2 drives are configured as a RAID mirror in the BIOS and the remaining 4 drives are not configured but apparently still have RAID metadata on them. I hadn't yet figured out how to fix that but went ahead and loaded the OS on the mirrored set. After pulling out a drive from the unused set, grub stopped at the grub prompt. I can find (hd0,0)/grub/grub.conf but when I cat it I get corruption with recognizable fragments. I can use setup (hd0) without issue but reboots keep dumping me at the grub prompt. I booted into the rescue environment of the minimal install CD and grub.conf looks just fine. It's only corrupt when I look at it from the grub boot environment. What could be going wrong?

I am trying, without success, to compile a custom locale for the utf-8 character set. Building a C5 chroot on a C6 machine

I'm trying to do something slightly silly; rather than having a C5 machine and a C6 machine around for compiling and testing, I want to create a C5 chroot area. Something similar to "mock" but using lvm snapshots and some local config specific stuff. (Potentially even using Linux Containers to enter the chroot environment). "ok". Some issues with post-install scripts breaking, but it mostly works. home directory server performance issues

I’m looking for advice and considerations on how to optimally setup and deploy an NFS-based home directory server. In particular: (1) how to determine hardware requirements, and (2) how to best setup and configure the server. We actually have a system in place, but the performance is pretty bad---the users often experience a fair amount of lag (1--5 seconds) when doing anything on their home directories, including an “ls” or writing a small text file. So now I’m trying to back-up and determine, is it simply a configuration issue, or is the hardware inadequate? Our scenario: we have about 25 users, mostly software developers and analysts. The users login to one or more of about 40 development servers. All users’ home directories live on a single server (no login except root); that server does an NFSv4 export which is mounted by all dev servers. The home directory server hardware is a Dell R510 with dual E5620 CPUs and 8 GB RAM. There are eight 15k 2.5” 600 GB drives (Seagate ST3600057SS) configured in hardware RAID-6 with a single hot spare. RAID controller is a Dell PERC H700 w/512MB cache (Linux sees this as a LSI MegaSAS 9260). OS is CentOS 5.6, home directory partition is ext3, with options “rw,data=journal,usrquota”. I have the HW RAID configured to present two virtual disks to the OS: /dev/sda for the OS (boot, root and swap partitions), and /dev/sdb for the home directories. Why is this? I would expect sda to generally be idle, or have minimal utilization. According to both “free” and “vmstat”, this server is not swapping at all. At one point, our problems were due to a random user writing a huge file to their home directory. We built a second server specifically for people to use for writing large temporary files. That server is fairly different though: dual E5-2340 CPUs (more cores, but lower clock), 32 GB RAM. Disk subsystem is Dell PERC 710 (LSI MegaRAID SAS 2208), and drives are 7200 RPM 1GB (SEAGATE ST1000NM0001) in RAID-6. The OS is CentOS 6.3, NFS partition is ext4 with options “rw,relatime,barrier=1,data=ordered,usrquota”. Ultimately, I plan to rebuild the home directory server with CentOS 6 (instead of 5), and align the partitions properly. But as of now, I don’t have a rational reason for doing that other than the other server with this config doesn’t have performance problems. I’d like to be able to say specifically (i.e. quantify) exactly where the problems are and how they will be addressed by the upgrade/config change. I’ll add that we want to use the “sec=krb5p” (i.e. encrypt everything) mount option for the home directories. We tried that with the home directory server, and it became virtually unusable. But we use that option on the other server, with no issue. For now, as a stop-gap, we are just using the “sec=krb5” mount option (i.e., no encryption). The server is still laggy, but at least usable. fixing partition alignment ?

Hi there, I've discovered that most of the hard drives used in our cluster got misaligned partitions, thus crippling perfs. Is there any way to fix that without having to delete/recreate properly aligned partitions, then format it and refill disks ? I'd be glad not to have to toy with moving several 10s of TB disk by disk :D (most disks are JBOD as we're using a fault tolerant network FS, moosefs not to name it). <insert your favorite search engine> wasn't helpful, unfortunately. How does Firefox work? Really?

I have, to me, perplexing situation. I am attempting to run Firefox on a CentOS-6.3 virtual machine to which I am connected using an SSH link with X-Forwarding enabled. (ssh -Y userid(a)host.domain.tld) The reason I wish to do this is that the vm is used for development an my code coverage analysis tool produces a html format report which is read via the file:// protocol. I thought that if I ran Firefox on that host then the Firefox window would open on my local machine, which it does. I also thought that since that Firefox window was actually running as an instance on the remote vm that the file:// protocol for that Firefox would seek out files on the vm's filesystem, which it does not. Instead that Firefox instance searches the local machine's filesystem and not that of the vm from which it was launched. This seems counter-intuitive to me. I am trying to get the debug version of httpd so I can use it in conjunction with gdb. I am having a hard time getting them, and they don't seem to be in the standard epel-debuginfo repository. SOS: Production VM not starting!

I am using a VM with CentOS 5.8 x86_64 under KVM. I only have console access to the VM through a virtual console (web based). Tonight, after a routine "yum update", I did a "shutdown -r now" due to kernel update and the VM won't start. See console screenshot vm1.png: https://vmail.noa.gr/files/vm1.png There is an error (which I haven't seen before): type=1404 audit (...): selinux=0 auid=... ses= ... (see vm1.png above) (The system cannot load even with the old kernel; the same error occurs.) Note that SElinux is disabled on this system. I booted in rescue mode, and auto mount was unsuccessful (see https://vmail.noa.gr/files/vm2.png) The log of the rescue process shows some error (see https://vmail.noa.gr/files/vm4.png) However, later I successfully mounted it using: mount -t ext3 /dev/vda3 /mnt/sysimage I then did a umount and: fsck.ext3 /dev/vda3 which found it clean (see https://vmail.noa.gr/files/vm3.png) What is wrong there? Can you please guide me on how to make it work again? This is a production ftp machine. Please help to revive. Thanks, Nick

I apparently missed it when doing the config files for CentOS 6.3. So, all 6.3 cplus kernels have that option disabled. :( I reopened the bug 5709. KDE login screen configuration problems

Sorry to be so slow in responding. I've done what you suggested. I created /etc/sysconfig/desktop and entered "$DISPLAYMANAGER=KDM". I rebooted but there was no change. GDM is still being used. Wacom hotplug Xorg crash

We're seeing a number of Xorg crashes with CentOS 6.2 when using a Wacom tablet shared between two machines (the other machine is running Windows) via a KVM Xorg crashes after switching the KVM back to the CentOS box I've tried googling for this issue - and have found: https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/solutions/148183 Which has a similar backtrace (although not identical) to ones we are seeing (see below) - but no further info is given on that webpage - but appears to indicated that more info might (?) be available if I have a Red Hat Subscription login - which I don't ... Would it be possible for someone that does have access to let me know if there is any more Red Hat Knowledge Base information about this issue? Hi, I do have a centos 6.x server which accessed two different iscsistorages for a long time without any trouble. The storage-connection is done by a separate NIC and VLAN. The LAN access is on an other NIC. This weekend something broke and I don't have any clue what might be the problem or what caused it. The storages where mounted RO. In /var/loge/messages there are lot of messages; so from dmesg: Dec 10 17:13:21 richter kernel: connection3:0: ping timeout of 5 secs expired, recv timeout 5, last rx 4324582419, last ping 4324587419, now 4324592419 Dec 10 17:13:21 richter kernel: connection3:0: detected conn error (1011) Dec 10 17:13:22 richter iscsid: Kernel reported iSCSI connection 3:0 error (1011 - ISCSI_ERR_CONN_FAILED: iSCSI connection failed) state (3) From dmesg: connection1:0: ping timeout of 5 secs expired, recv timeout 5, last rx 4324597423, last ping 4324602423, now 4324607423 connection1:0: detected conn error (1011) I restarted the server and the filesystems are back online RW, but there are still that messages. Hey, anyone has some successful experience with ionice? I tried it with 'idle' (-c 3) parameter. When I did a quick test (find /), it seemed to work with frequent pauses (I guess waiting for idle). But when I used it on my big tar, it made it worse than without... which seems counter-intuitive. Thx, JD

Questions on making a kickstart cfg

So I took the anaconda cfg, commented out the partition/disk pieces and ran it off my repo server and it almost worked. Little things like not including things I had done on network setup. No first boot.... :) So now I am reading up on building a kickstart cfg http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/KickStart http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.2/Installation_Guide/s1-kickstart2-howu… So for starters I figured out that the lines prior to the %packages are commands. So I added there: firstboot --enable Oh, but this won't work if firstboot is not installed. I am tempted to assume it will be, as it was from all the packages that got installed in the installation that created this anaconda-ks.cfg. Sounds reasonable? To NOT use firstboot, what do I have to add to the kickstart beyond user --name=something --password=somethingstrong Of course if I don't have the encrypt stuff, this is a first use password that I would change on first login. But what about time setup? And what else is there in firstboot? Then I want some network setup, so I changed to network line from: network --onboot yes --device eth0 --bootproto dhcp --noipv6 to network --onboot yes --device eth0 --bootproto=query I note that anaconda had "--bootproto dhcp" while the howto shows an = , I assume both forms are valid? Oh, is there a 'bug' in the network section of the howto? =================================== The line for static networking is more complex, as you must include all network configuration information on one line. You must specify the IP address, netmask, gateway, and nameserver. For example: (the "\" indicates that this should be read as one continuous line): network --bootproto=static --ip=10.0.2.15 --netmask=255.255.255.0 \ --gateway=10.0.2.254 --nameserver=10.0.2.1 If you use the static method, be aware of the following two restrictions: All static networking configuration information must be specified on one line; you cannot wrap lines using a backslash, for example. =================================== Wait a sec, their example uses the \ and then it says you can't use the \? Which is it?

.PDFs on my local harddrive open by default with acroread Adobe Reader 9. .PDFs on network shares open with evince Document Viewer. Is there some way to force "Open With" to also use acroread for network locations as well? Here are the inconsistencies in the UI: When right clicking a local harddrive .PDF, top line in menu is "Open with Adobe Reader 9" When right clicking a remote harddrive .PDF, top line in menu is "Open with Document Viewer" When right clicking and choosing properties and choosing the "Open With" tab, a .PDF file in both locations indicates "Adobe Reader 9." gdm on CentOS 6.3 32bit with all latest updates. Is there something that "automatically" removes files in the /tmp directory on a scheduled basis? Perhaps like at the start of the month or something. I am on CentOS 6? I had a number of files stored there and they are just gone. Very odd. Jerry

a little out of my comfort zone and have practically gotten what I want but awk seems determined to send a message via std error which is problematic and annoying. Basically trying to get a list of virtual host names from nginx config files like this: $ awk -F" " '/./ { if ( match ( "^server_name$", $2 ) ) print $1 }' /opt/nginx/sites/*.conf \ | grep -v server_name | grep -v ';' | grep -v '}' and the list of virtual host names is perfect except that I get this line first... awk: (FILENAME=/opt/nginx/sites/ids.conf FNR=55) fatal: Unmatched ( or \(: /($host/ and I can't seem to dismiss it and I definitely don't want it in my data scrape. Anyone know how to prevent this?
