Helo, we use recent to control ip traffic. kernel 2.6.18-308.13.1.el5 : all is OK kernel 2.6.18-308.16.1.el5 : the first recent statement causes an error. E.g.: iptables -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m recent --set -p tcp --dport 80 iptables: Unknown error 18446744073709551615 The man pages say: recent is supported. CentOS 6: is OK Knows anyone more? Memcached - replication?

Hi all. I am thinking about installing memcached with replication, I've found http://sourceforge.net/projects/repcached/files/repcached/2.2.1-1.2.8/ but it is for 1.2.8, and for Centos 6.3 memcached is in version 1.4.4. I do not want to use client side "replication" (writing to two memcached nodes at the same time) and haven't found other solution. Are there any good, protocol compatible solutions? Installing Java 7 on a system with Java 6

My system is 5.6, with upgrades. I installed Java 6 from the Centos repository. It doesn't seem to have Java 7. I need the development package. How can I install Java 7 development safely? Monitoring bandwidth, latency, packet drop.

Hi all. I am currently thinking about monitoring a network link (bandwidth, latency, packet drop). I have a centos server which is connected to providers network through a switch. How to test the link? Should I: - use ICMP to ping gateway and collect staistics of time/packet loss/etc. - use software like here: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-unix-windows-monitor-outgoing-bandwidth-… (client/server) ? Is there an option to monitor bandwidth, latency, packet drop without installing additional software on gateway or external host? Best regards, Rafał.

Hi, I have an iscsistorage which I attached to a new centos 6.3 server. I added logic volumes as usual, the block devices (sdb & sdc) showed up in dmesg; I can mount and access the stored files. Now we did an firmware software update to that storage (while unmounted/detached from the fileserver) and after reboot of the storage and reatache the iscsi nodes I do get new devices. (sdd & sde) The last time I remember a simple vgchange -ay changed all neede settings so that I can mount and use the volumes as expected. But this time I do get an IO error like /dev/sun7110to_dali_LUN_3/lvol0: read failed after 0 of 4096 at 1610608476160: Eingabe-/Ausgabefehler but also: 1 logical volume(s) in volume group "sun7110to_dali_LUN_3" now active What might be messed up? Forwarding just in case anyone is familiar with this on CentOS, thanks! -- Hello, Just found that net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range has different behavior between RHEL releases: until v6 although you have multiple source IPs you can only use a fixed number of local ports, seems that "ip_local_port_range" is a global configuration or limitation. On RHEL-6 kernel (testing with 2.6.32-279) you can bind() to N local ports per source IP, it's a per-IP limit: total ports = ip_local_port_range x source IP. The problem is that on RHEL-5 and 4 you can only make ip_local_port_range outgoing connections and you can't use different source IPs trick to increase this limitation. I have been testing and vanilla 2.6.32 kernel and other Linux distributions like Debian doesn't support this. What has been changed/patched on RHEL-6 to allow this? Santi Saez

kvm to virtualbox

I have a KVM (qemu-img raw) that I have attempted to convert to VirtualBox. I did the convertfromraw to convert to vdi. I was hoping it would be that simple but, no. When I try to boot the image, it does not boot. Is there something "extra" I need to do - or something different? Thanks, Jerry

Maybe I'm not clear enought, I already had CentOS5.8 Xen on my Hosts, but I'm finding a solution more "enterprise". The HA/Load Balance solution we had are self made, it is much time consuming for our needs. We are searching for something more easy (or self) administering software. I looked at the capacitors, they seem good, nothing bursted or corroded. I'm inclined to say it's purely a C6 problem, as I said the behaviour is since I installed C6 on it.

Hi, am using latest C6 on a Dell GX270 with latest Bios. It fails to power down but restarts when running $ sudo poweroff I tried some google hints for kernel boot option: acpi=force no help, looks like acpi is working anyway when looking in dmesg acpi=off makes e1000 nic fail to initialize Any suggestions? Here's another one: there's an option in the BIOS of some servers for "return to previous state" on loss of power. If that's there, you might try it the other way. LVM question during an upgrade

Well, I'm upgrading a server from 5.8 to 6.3. Problem: someone built the system with LVM. I see some few differences between /etc/lvm/lvm.conf and the one from 6.3, and I'm trying to figure out what I can leave alone, and what I need to set to that from the old version. For example, the old one has preferred_names = [], and the new has a list. Anyone have thoughts about whether I can just copy over the old? I do know there are some new parameters (thin_*): do I need to add them? mark

Install CentOS 6.3 to partitionable mdadm array

Hello all, I'm trying to install CentOS 6.3 to an mdadm partitionable array and not having any luck. The installer only allows me to create one file system per md device, or specify the md device as a LVM physical volume. I don't want to do either, I want to create one md device and create multiple partitions on top of the md device. I thought that perhaps the installer was preventing me from doing this because it wasn't possible to boot off a partitionable mdadm array, but through googling I don't believe this is the case. (See links at the bottom of this email) I've tried the graphical installer and the text-mode installer, and neither gives me the ability to install to a partitionable mdadm array. Even more annoying is that if I manually create such an array, partition it and create file systems, the installer will stop the array when starting the partitioning utility, preventing me from installing to the partitions I created. Is there an advanced mode in the installer that I can force it to install to a partitionable md device, or is that not an option? I'd like to avoid having multiple md devices on the same physical drives, and unfortunately the application I'm installing doesn't place nicely with LVM. Anyone else around using apcupsd? I seem to be seeing a problem, and I'd like someone to check me on it: I edit /etc/apcupsd/apccontrol to replace the value of SHUTDOWN from /sbin/shutdown to /bin/false (we don't want 3 or 6 servers shutting down over a 2 second or so blip, which it really wants to do). What's happened is that a machine shut down the other day, and looking at it, I found that the config file was set to the original code... and I *KNOW*, for a fact, that I went through every single server that's attached to a UPS many months ago, after something important shut down, and fixed all of them. So, it looks like an upgrade undid my change, rather than creating apccontrol.rpmnew. Has anyone seen this behavior? mark

Copying a file to a usb stick

Hi all, i have the situation where i need to have a nfs share on different locations on the client filesystem e. g. /vhost/one/htdocs/media /vhost/two/htdocs/media /vhost/.../htdocs/media is there some "performance" differences between mounting "media" every time via nfs or mount "media" only once via nfs and then remount "media" every time i need via "bind" locally? NoMachine Player on Mac OSX 10.7 and strange characters

I have a FreeNX server running on a development CentOS-6.3 kvm guest and I have the NoMachine player for OSX installed on my MacBook pro. I can connect to my desktop without problem. However, when I run a terminal session on the remote desktop when I type / I get é displayed and I cannot enter directory paths in consequence. I recall having a similar problem with the VNC remote console in virt-manager and that was caused by virt-manager leaving out the keyboard specification from the graphics entry in /etc/libvirt/qemu/config.xml. However, I cannot discover if a similar configuration setting exists for NoMachine. Does anyone else here use NoMachine player from a Mac and if so have you encountered and solved this problem? Problem with CLVM (really openais)

I'm desparately looking for more ideas on how to debug what's going on with our CLVM cluster. Background: 4 node "cluster"-- machines are Dell blades with Dell M6220/M6348 switches. Sole purpose of Cluster Suite tools is to use CLVM against an iSCSI storage array. Machines are running CentOS 5.8 with the Xen kernels. These blades host various VMs for a project. The iSCSI back-end storage hosts the disk images for the VMs. The blades themselves run from local disk. Each blade has 3 active networks: -- Front-end, public net. -- Back-end net (backups, Database connections to external servers, cluster communication) -- iSCSI net Front and Back nets are on Xen Bridges and available/used by the VMs. iSCSI net only used by Dom0/blades. Originally got CLVM working by installing Luci/Ricci. Here's where it gets really strange..... 1. Go to the blade that has "failed" and shut down all the VMs (just to be safe-- they are all running fine). 2. Go to the node that tried to fence the failed node and run: fence_ack_manual -e -n <failed node> 3. The 3 "surviving" nodes are instantly fine. group_tool reports "none" for state and all CLVM commands work properly. 4. OK, now reboot the "failed" node. It reboots and rejoins the cluster. Running the latest RH patched openais from their Beta channel: openais-0.80.6-37.el5 (yes, I actually have RH licenses, just prefer CentOS for various reasons). 3. Tested multicast by enabling multicast/ICMP and running multicast pings. Ran with no data loss for > 10 minutes. No change (or got worse- the dual ring config triggers a kernel bug). I've read about every article I can find... they usually fall into two camps: 1. Multiple years old, so no idea if it's accurate with today's versions of the software. 2. People trying to do 2-node clusters and wondering why they lose quorum. My feeling is that this is an openais issue-- the ring gets out of sync and can't fix itself. This system needs to go "production" in a matter of weeks, so I'm not sure I want to dive into doing some sort of custom compiled CLVM/Corosync/Pacemaker config. advice on storage for media storage/streaming server

Hello, I would like to use centos 6.3 to build a media server with 7 2TB drives and would like suggestions on the storage aspect. This is going to run mediaplex and function only as a media storage/streaming server. 1. If I didn't care about redundancy, would ext4 handle the size of a raid 0? 2. If I did go with the redundancy, what raid level should I use? 3. Should I use LVM? Why? Thank you in advance for your thoughts on this. Phil

Hey Y'all, Does CentOS have a desk top switcher similar to what you find on Fedora? A friend of mine want's to be able to switch between desktops. I've only got Gnome installed on my machine so I don't switch. A search of Google turns up reference to CentOS 4 for desktop switcher but I don't see anything for CentOS 6.3.

related. I'm thinking that we will have a "cloud" when we can use VDI to virtualize our desktop labs :D For now we are searching a way to automatize the management of our VMs, but without all of the lights, rings, and bells most of the cloud softwares had :D Our installation is prety simple: all hosts share some LUNs from the Storage (via iSCSI). We had cLVM on it. The VMs had their own LVM partition. And we had a couple o C and bash programs that do the magic. But, to deploy a new VM is almos the same as deploy a physical host. No snaphsot (cLVM didn't had it working), and no clone (it almost kills the SAN net). This is why we are searching for something else! VMware and Citrix made some demonstrations for our boss, but both needs MS-AD. network and stability issues

hi Guys, Over the last 24 hours we have had a series of stability issues. First, the DC our mail/lists machine is hosted in had power issues ( Internap LGA9, NY, USA ); then we had a h/w failure and needed a chassis swap ( thanks to the guys in the DC who executed this within minutes ); and we have since again had network issues - although power to the DC and the server seems stable now. Over the next 24 hours, lets just try and be a bit patient and work with this. We have good backups so if things dont stabalise in the next 24 hrs we will failover. The primary reason we have not done this as yet ( failover ), is down to the fact that its taken a long time, in years, for us to build a reputation with large hosting facilities and email providers and are on many whitelists. Moving the host over makes it hard for us to get that sort of level of trust again really quickly. Longer term, we should perhaps spread the load through multiple machines and then ensure we have good relationships out of all these machines exit IP's with the various vendors and service providers. Virtualization Options!

Hi, I'm searching for "virtualization options". I already take a look on VMware, but it needs too much MS software to work for my needs. Citrix needs less, but the key validation is still MS-AD. Now I'm taking a look at RHEV... and run into Oracle VM! Somebody had already take a look at Oracle VM? We need in primary a solid VM solution for an "enterprise cloud" running on top of some old and new Dell servers in conjunction with an EMC Cx4-120 storage. We had plans to provide "desktop virtualization" in the future, most to labs class, and maybe adminstrative tasks. But it isn't necessary now. Anybody had some other options to tell? Centos 6.2 x64 after GRUB menu, black screen with blinking cursor

Dear CentOS users, I installed CentOS 6.2 x64 in a Sun Fire X4450 machine, it has 4 disks and I configured them to be a single volume (no RAID). The installer sees the volume perfectly, its 570Gb. I created two ext3 partitions, /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. In the logs I see they are formated correctly. All the files are installed. Then when I reboot, I get to the GRUB menu. Choose the first and only option, and immediately after that I only see a black screen with blinking cursor on top left. I've tried recreating the grub manually with : find /boot/grub/stage1 (reported it on hd0,0) root (hd0,0) setup (hd0) quit Then I try to boot and I get the same blinking cursor. I tried another approach with no luck either : replacing root=LABEL=UUID for root=/dev/sda1 just to see if this could help ... but I have the same problem. I don't really now what's going on. Is there anyway to put grub into verbose mode so I can see what exactly it is doing or looking for ? Thanks in advance. Regards.

Issue installing Centos server on Vmware Fusion/Server

Hi All, I've had issues over the last few days trying to create a Centos server image . I've tried with Vmware fusion and Vmware server and it skips directly to the default desktop install and doesn't give me the option to run the linux server. I am not sure if you've seen this earlier. I've tried with Centos 5.8 and 6.0 but the installer seems to work in that manner . Thoughts around how to fix this ? Thanks Mamu

Gnome Screensaver - not functioning as advertised

Hi List, Currently running a couple of CentOS 6.3 workstations / laptops with gnome as the default window manager. Since the original 6.1 install the behaviour of the screensaver has changed. I use the cosmos theme and have this activate after five minutes of idle. Initially, when the five minutes were up, the screen would start to dim and if one moved the mouse or hit a key on the keyboard it would drop out of screensave and return to full bright screen. With one of the updates since then, the behaviour has changed - now once the 5 minutes are up - one has to wait until the gradual dimming of the screen is complete (a couple of seconds) and only then move the mouse or hit a key to show the password dialog - enter password and then get a working screen - all quite time consuming. So I thought, remove the "Lock screen when screensaver is active" - I have unchecked this option, logged in and out, and it just ignores it and insists on a password - always. I guess there is some option buried deep within the gnome system panel that needs some attention - any ideas? My preference is to have it back to the original behaviour, once the screen begins to fade, a mouse movement or key click prevents the screensaver from gaining complete control and needing the password entry dialog etc. all my precious seconds being wasted - especially as I have a 5 minute idle setting. Network issue - Windows works but CentOS does not

I am having an extremely strange issue with a BL460c1 (G1) blade on a c7000 enclosure. I could not for the life of me get the machine to ping the gateway or any other blade on the same enclosure (yes, the subnet mask was correct & quadruple-checked); although pinging to the local IP works. I was almost convinced that it was a network or hardware issue; until I asked someone to try installing Windows on that blade to verify that it was not working as well; however to my surprise it worked fine in Windows after installing the network driver; by just setting the IP address (which was the same IP I was trying to configure CentOS with). The interfaces come up fine (eth0 & eth1); the cards are: 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5708S Gigabit Ethernet (rev 12) 07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5708S Gigabit Ethernet (rev 12) NetworkManager is disabled. There is no bonding configured. The network firmware is the latest available from the HP website (bootcode 4.4.1, CLP 1.3.6). The network is supposed to be simple; if I do a: ifconfig eth0 172.12.34.112 netmask 255.255.255.0 I am supposed to be able to: ping 172.12.34.1 However, I get: PING 172.12.34.1 (172.12.34.1) 56(84) bytes of data. From 172.12.34.112 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable From 172.12.34.112 icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable From 172.12.34.112 icmp_seq=4 Destination Host Unreachable From 172.12.34.112 icmp_seq=5 Destination Host Unreachable I cannot even ping blades in the same enclosure. Yet in windows server 2008 after putting the same IP pinging the same IPs works. I tried: - the disable_msi=1 parameter of the bnx2 driver - a fresh install of CentOS 6.3 - a fresh install of RHEL 6.2 - a live CD of CentOS 5.5 - Clonezilla-ubuntu and systemrescuecd (kernel 3.2) live CDs - CentOS 6.3 with the kernel(-headers,-firmware,-devel) updated to the latest (RPMs were copied with a USB/iLO) - the bnx2 network driver available from the HP website - the bnx2 network driver available from Broadcom Other than a check_ncic warning with the stock 6.3 driver (doesn't appear when trying other drivers); the bnx2 isn't logging anything problematic when I checked with dmesg or /var/log/messages. With tcpdump; strangely, I get random traffic destined to different IPs (probably from the same enclosure), but those IPs do not ping either. However, I got a feeling of deja vu in the midst of all this; as I recall setting up an RHEL machine somewhere else 2-3 years ago; and had the issue of the network working with Windows but not Linux; it turned out that it was because Autonegotiation was disabled with the gigabit network (the few attempts with playing with ethtool did not work); and searching online led me to people saying it ought to be enabled anyway as a standard requires it for gigabit. When the network guys enabled autoneg; it started working in Linux. I am wondering if I'm facing the same issue here, as I see ethtool saying: Advertised auto-negotiation: No Speed: 1000Mb/s I tried doing some ethtool settings (setting autoneg off and forcing 1000, other random options, etc) but it didn't help; but possibly I was trying the wrong things. I am not very familiar with HP blades; but it seems I cannot enable Autoneg for this blade (?); I do not have direct access to the hardware though (everything was done through iLO). Any of you faced issues with a gigabit network with Autoneg disabled? Or any other ideas? This is the only Linux machine in the entire network.
