8139 dropping packets

I have a CentOS 5.8 box that is dropping packets (just from ping). The network is 8139 RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ Rev 10 Adding the parameters "pci=noacpi acpi=off " has helped but it still happens. Is there something else that helps the network not drop packets? Thanks, jerry

Sound Stutters and Sputters then dies

Hey Y'all, Recently my sound has been misbehaving. The issue exists when I play sound using Rhythmbox, Totem Movie Player, or even Youtube video in Firefox or Chrome. The sound stutters and drops out. Sounds very rough. On Youtube the sound will eventually just die and can not be restarted until the browser is shut down and restarted. I've had issues related to Repo Forge packages in the past but there are no Repo Forge packages on my system. Check your duplex. I have had two recent problems with duplex: One, with a Cisco router - it auto-negotiated every time to half duplex, even though it really -was- full. Use mii-tool to find out. Two, with a RR modem - the speed was forced to 10mb half duplex instead of 100mb full duplex. All sorts of strange loss. Once I put it back, all was well. I have used TONs of 8139s, and while I do see where they are not the fastest kid on the block, I cannot say I've seen packet loss. Bob

Tomcat Linux/Windows Performance Question

Hi, Now I have a windows 2008 server and a Tomcat 6.x on it. Our application has many many parts and it's very big. Actually we are not happy with tomcat performance, (We are working very hard on developing that software and improving performance) . We want to improve application performance (working on it now) and tomcat (by tuning and we are doing now) and finally OS, for this we want to remove (damn) windows and come back to centos. SSSD configuration

Hello, we're upgrading from Centos 5.8 to Centos 6.3 and have realized few things have changed in the system. We're using LDAP authentication (nss_ldap package) on our Centos 5.8 servers and have different PAM ldap configuration files configured to be used for specific PAM services. Here is the example of our setup: /etc/pam.d/service1: auth sufficient pam_ldap.so config=/etc/ldap_service1.conf /etc/pam.d/service2: auth sufficient pam_ldap.so config=/etc/ldap_service2.conf Thus we can use specific LDAP filters for various different services as not all users having access to one service also have access to other services on the same server. Now we're facing the problem to manage the same functionality with System Security Services Daemon (SSSD) which was newly presented with RHEL 6. We didn't find out so far how to specify custom sssd configuration file (or specific part of the configuration section/domain) in PAM service configuration. According to documentation only these options can be specified when using pam_sss module: [forward_pass] [use_first_pass] [use_authtok]. None of them can be used to make a difference in a ldap filter to be used. Is there a way how to configure specific search filters depending on PAM service ? Hi! I can make ldap authentication to work using LDAPS in CentOS 6. On CentOS 5, I just simply set tls_cheekpeer no to /etc/ldap.conf and it works! I tried all /etc/nslcd.conf /etc/pam_ldap.conf /etc/openldap/ldap.conf It 's really confusing on CentOS 6. Why so many files???? CentOS 5 LDAPTLS_REQCERT=never ldapsearch -x -H ldaps://xxxx (works!) CentOS 6 LDAPTLS_REQCERT=never ldapsearch -x -H ldaps://xxxx (Can 't connect to LDAP Server ...) Permission "nfsnobody" and mounting an nfs share in a datacenter

Hi A datacenter I use provides mountable nfs shares that are provided through a subnet, the only person having access to the nfs share is me. Assign external esata drive to KVM

Hello Everyone, I have a CentOS 6.3 host running a few KVMs. One of them is a CentOS 6.3 KVM that I want to use for making backups with BackupPC. What I'm having a problem with is assigning the KVM an external drive. I used to run BackupPC on an Ubuntu box. The backups went to an external eSATA 1.5TB, ext4 format, single partition drive (regular 3.5" in an enclosure). I want to now attach that same external drive to my KVM host, and pass it up to the KVM running BackupPC. I added the entire drive as a second storage disk to the KVM. I used the disk's label (/dev/disk/by-label/backups) so that I wouldn't have to worry about the device name changing down the road. When I booted up the KVM and listed the disks, I only saw "/dev/vdb". I was also expecting to see "/dev/vdb1". I ran fdisk on it only to see the partition table wasn't detected. The drive itself is OK - I can mount it successfully on the KVM host. I have installed kernel-ml-2.6.39-4.2.el5.elrepo.i686.rpm on a computer. and also kernel-ml-devel-2.6.39-4.2.el5.elrepo.i686.rpm with base CentOS 5.8 i686 I also installed kmod-alsa-1.0.25-3.el5.elrepo.i686.rpm All "seems" fine - sound even works - in the fact that I hear it. However, when using alsamixer it appears that I can move the volume up/down and even hit MUTE but it has no affect. Hitting MUTE I still get sound out. Moving the volume up/down has no effect. What else might I be needing to have "control" of the volume? Thanks, Jerry

I am about to set up a computer with Centos 6 that I'll probably never see again. I don't want to give out the root password, but I would like to have it automatically and transparently update itself. What is the best way to do this? find with -mtime and -print0 = inaccurate results

If I run this: find /path/to/files/ -type f -mtime -2 -name *.xml.gz I get the expected results, files with modify time less than two days old. But, if I run it like this, with the print0 flag: find /path/to/files/ -print0 -type f -mtime -2 -name *.xml.gz I get older files included as well. Anyone know why?

My command is: grubby --grub --title "CentOS (2.6.32.60)" --add-kernel=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.60 --initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.32.60.img --args="ro root=LABEL=/ noapic" --make-default my etc/grub.conf file after running the command is: title CentOS (2.6.32.60) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.60 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet noapic initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.32.60.img title CentOS (2.6.18-308.4.1.el5) root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-308.4.1.el5 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet noapic initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-308.4.1.el5.img Notice the "root (hd0,0)" is not there... Hi All, Trying to run fsck on a local linux raid partition gave the following. [root@... /]# fsck.ext4 /dev/md0 e2fsck 1.41.12 (17-May-2010) /dev/md0 has unsupported feature(s): 64bit e2fsck: Get a newer version of e2fsck! Odd as the server is 64bit running latest kernel and using latest "e2fsprogs.x86_64". Any ideas awould be much appreciated. Cheers Steve k

Export/Import wild card SSL

Hi all, This topic is one that I am ignorant on and appreciate any guidance. My scenario; I have a wild card SSL installed on one of my CentOS boxes. As I understand it, this server was used as a sort of master when originally generating and receiving the wild card SSL cert (got the cert from GoDaddy BTW). So, now I must export some file(s) from that server so that I can import it/them to another server. Were do I begin? I did manage to generate a .cer from a pem belonging to my master server via; openssl x509 in ca.pem -inform PEM -out somefile.crt.cer -outform DER But I honestly do not under stand what I did here and have a feeling this is incomplete as aren't public and private key involved some how? I have my ca.csr (my request file), ca.key (my private key) and ca.pem (my public key) files in hand and ready. A backup has been made for testing. Thanks in advance for any info. - aurf

Hi, I know I can create a file and mount it like this: dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/somefile bs=1024 count=100000 mke2fs /tmp/somefile mount /tmp/somefile /mnt -o loop but that has a problem it cannot grow. Is there a way to do the same (above) but have it not restricted to a size? Or can I append blocks to the end of the file without distroying it? Jobst -- Sendmail administration is not black magic. CentOS 6 NFS mmap I/O bug?

I'm working with a company who is running into an issue occasionally with their app running CentOS 6 on an NFS mount. The problem is essentially that, from a single CentOS 6 client, the client sometimes gets the wrong file size back from a stat() call. The problem specifically seems to happen after mmap and ftruncate calls. The former envionrment for the application was CentOS 4 where is has run for many years with no apparent issues. Normally, this final stat() will return the correct file size, but every now and then we get this. After waiting a few seconds another stat to the file will show the expected file size which would be 36527128 in this case. The NFS client is using mount options "tcp,nfsvers=3". The process is also single threaded, and there's no expectation for the I/O to appear to behave synchronously beyond more than a single NFS client. We're suspicious that the CentOS 6 NFS client is not caching properly. Additional testing is happening now, but it also appears that it may only happen when the memory map calls are in place ( mmap(), memmove(), and msync() ). We don't expect the files to We have reproduced this issue with both CentOS 6.0 and 6.3 on multiple NFS servers from different vendors. Any help is appreciated. Hi, I guess this is a bit OT but perhaps someone has encountered this issue before. On a CentOS 6.3 x86_64 box I have installed postfix and dspam from EPEL. Dspam is configured to listen on port 10026. How, exactly, does CentOS-6.3 with udev recognize an USB modem when it is plugged in. How is it indicated? What other configuration is required? r8712u wireless driver

I've just installed centos 6.3 for the first time on a test machine and couldn't be happier - except that a critical wireless adapter driver is missing - the r8712u. I would love to convert my mythtv machine from Fedora 17 to centos 6.3 to put all that chaos and instability behind me. My mythtv machine connects only wirelessly to the rest of my network and uses a Rosewill RNX-N180UBE USB adapter. This adapter has a larger than normal antenna with 5db of gain and supports 802.11n protocol. This provides greater bandwidth and a more reliable connection than any previously tested wireless adapter. However, it requires the r8712u driver that is absent from centos 6.3 and all the repos that I've examined. The elrepo repo has a number of packages that are close, but unfortunately not the r8712u. This driver is available for Fedora 17 in the kmod-staging package. Is there any chance to adapt this package for centos 6.3? Or at least the r8712u driver portion thereof? ext3 partition on LVM lost all data

Hello Gentlemen, I would like to ask a question about an issue I have with the Centos 6.3 installation. I have installed a Centos 6.3 on a server we used before with 5.4 on Friday. I have created a KS file to let me connect to the server via VNC and have all repos and packages preconfigured. I only needed to partition the hard drive using VNC. During the partition process I selected which volumes should be formatted and which should be left alone. The installation went perfectly, without a problem. I added the server to our Puppet infrastructure and started to assign modules to it. After I have installed and configured samba I wanted to mount the data volume so that people could continue their work on Monday. Unfortunately the partition was empty. Only the lost+found directory was present. Can you please tell me what went wrong? Or if this can be fixed somehow? Hi all, Is it possible to setup a private local CentOS mirror only for the latest release (http://mirror.centos.org/centos/6/) via http only?? I know how to do using rsync, but I need to accomplish this via http service only ... Thanks.

Skype and Sound

I have installed Skype 4.0.0.8 on my new workstation running CentOS-6.3 (kvm) and the Gnome DTM. This host has an Intel DG43GT motherboard with on-board audio. The sound works when tested in the sound preferences in the desk top. Skype runs and the integrated usb video and microphone both work (I infer this from the mic test in Skype options showing movement on the intensity bar as I can hear nothing). I have gone through all of the choices in the audio setting and none of them work. OpenLDAP on CentOS 6.3

Hi All: I am attempting to setup OpenLDAP on c CentOS 6.3 platform. I have been able to locate numerous online how to documents but none seem to work correctly on CentOS 6.3. I believe that the reason is the new dynamic configuration (AKA cn=config). Can someone provide me with a pointer or two in the right direction I would greatly appreciated it. SeaMonkey on CentOS 6.3

Been a while since I used seamonkey, but needed it yesterday. The old version I had installed (2.11) threw an error when I tried it, so I grabbed 2.12.1 from mozilla.com. It throws the same error: $ /usr/local/seamonkey/seamonkey & [1] 7050 $ XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /usr/local/seamonkey/libxpcom.so: libxul.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Couldn't load XPCOM. Of course libxul.so is right there in /usr/local/seamonkey, as it is in the other expected mozilla-related places. Reminds me of the old LD_LIBRARY_PATH issues in Solaris and others. What's the modern way to address this? Centos 5.8: starting firefox-16.0.1 kills X

This just started happening this evening. a little history: way back last year, or thereabouts, I posted about a weird problem I was having. over the course of 2 or 3 days I figured out how to fix it, but not what the cause was. the fix amounts to navigating to my user's .local/share/mime directory and removing the file named "globs". So, back in the present: this evening that same problem recurred for the 3rd or 4th time since the original event mentioned above. so I deleted that file, logged off and back on (without the log off/on, the problem still occurs). Having done that, I went to fire up firefox and KABOOM!! X dies and I land back at a login prompt. several times. every time. tried running firefox from a terminal but I don't see anything echoed to the terminal before it is blown away. I still have the tarball from mozilla.org, so I moved aside the directory where the firefox runtime stuff is, re-extracted the tarball and it still croaks in the same way. I'd appreciate some ideas to try, if anyone has any. Thanks in advance! In the meantime, Opera works (though I can't install 12.0.2 for lack of a suitable version of rpmlib, so I'm not left browseerless. CentOS6 and pam_access

I just realised that pam_access no longer works under CentOS6 - or it works differently from CentOS5. Under CentOS5, I used this configuration to restrict access to root only: # cat /etc/security/access.conf + : root : ALL - : ALL : ALL # cat /etc/pam.d/system-auth-ac ... account required pam_access.so account required pam_unix.so account sufficient pam_localuser.so account sufficient pam_succeed_if.so uid < 500 quiet account required pam_permit.so ... # Under CentOS6, this has no effect and I can still login as non-root user. What am I missing?

Hi Guys, Has anyone used the EPEL packages associated with rabbitvcs-nautilius on centos 6.3 (fully patched)? I have it installed, but it doesn't add the additional menu options when I right click a folder within nautilus.
