Well, I seem to be getting somewhere, although where exactly is open to question. I did this. I put the virtual interface address 192.168.0.1 back onto eth1 of the gateway host and restarted the network services. Restarting with the same config did not change the initially observed outcome. C6 VM text install not recognizing LV

The installation starts but once I get to the disk partitioning no disk is listed and I cannot continue the installation. Once upon a time, 2 days ago, the interface on the gateway system included ifcfg-eth1:192 which had the address 192.168.0.1 and the netmask 255.255.255.0. At that point I was not aware of any underlying problems and virtual interfaces on other hosts which had addresses like 192.168.216.ddd could be found and connected to from internal host addresses of the form aaa.bbb.ccc.0 where aaa.bbb.ccc is our publicly routable C class assigned address block. The difficulties started when I began testing a new virtual host which eventually will be moved off-site to our DR facility (which is a lot less impressive in fact than it appears when I write that, but at least we have one). On that machine, for no particular reason, I decided to use a different sub-net for the 192.168 IP on the VM guests eth1 i/f. When I did that the kvm host could connect to those i/f, presumably because its own eth1 was set to an address on the same netblock (192.168.209.43) but no other host could connect to either the host's eth1 or any of the running guests' eth1. This is what prompted the question which has turned into this thread. When I set this network up many ages ago I added 192.168.0.1 to the internal i/f of the gateway router in the apparently unfounded belief that if the router knew that the internal i/d had an address in the 192.168 address space then it would not try to route traffic destined for those addresses through the router. As I say, my knowledge of this is very limited. Although, to be fair, everything has worked as I expected up to now and this situation is simply an experiment of my own devising. So, I am hardly a walking accident waiting to happen. What I wanted to have happen was for all traffic destined for 192.168.anything to stay inside the LAN and attached to the specified address, while any traffic that originated from 192.168.anything destined to anywhere else would route through the gateway; where it is NAT mangled. I just want to understand what is going on in this specific case without delving deeply into the subject of routing, for which I do not have the luxury of time. This not impacting anything of significance so I take it up on a time available basis. Advice on partitioning a Dell MD1200 disk array

Hi, I've just got possession of a Dell PE R720 with 2 MD1200 disk enclosures. Both MD1200 are fully populated with 12 x 3 TB disks The system will basically be a student file-server running CentOS 6.x serving various size files from small c programs to multi gigabyte audio and video files over GB ethernet. The first MD1200 will be configured as the NFS disk. The requirements are for 6 fixed equally sized partitions, one for each cohort of students. For this I was thinking of splitting the MD1200 into 2 RAID5 arrays with a hot spare each. Then partitioning each into 3 ext4 partitions. The second MD1200 will be used to backup the first, using BackupPC and for other storage purposes. As I won't know the storage requirements for the "backup partition" and they will probably change over time anyway. I was thinking of using LVM for it. So how to partition the MD1200 for LVM. I don't want to put all 12 disks in a RAID5 and put a LVM volume on it. Can I split it into 2 RAID5 and have a LVM volume spanning both. Any suggestions. Just remember I'm due to retire at the end of this month so this will be my last big job for the Dept. And due to financial constraints I will not be replaced. Booting and ignoring sysct.conf...

Hi, just wondering if there was a way to boot while ignoring sysctl.conf... A colleague messed up one parameter, that ended up crashing the server at boot time. Booting in single was not helping. Fixed it by booting on a live CD and modifying the sysctl file but, it would be convenient to know if there was a kernel parameter to add to the grub entry or something to bypass it... But I see it is run in /etc/init.d/functions, so maybe it is not avoidable. Thx, JD

CentOs6- Use nscd for offline LDAP

Dear All, I'm thinking about connecting the 15 or so laptops in our organisation to LDAP. Now I'm trying to use nscd in order to enable the users to work when being offline. The test laptop is installed for this occasion, updated CentOs6.3. A general error occurred while accessing your central configuration. /*When starting nscd LibreOffice just works. *When enabling nscd a can su to an LDAP user from root, without nscd the user does not exist. *But the problem I'm having* is I was kinda hoping to log back in from a locked screen or from hibernation, in other words continue a running session. Recover software raid 10 on CentOS 6.3

The setup is 4 1TB drives running RAID10. I was using the Gnome Disk Utility to verify the integrity of the array (which is a 500MB mirrored md0 and the rest a R10 md1). I believe one of the drives is bad but prior to the system going offline it showed that 2 drives were detached from the array but healthy. A reboot results in a panic complaining that not enough mirrors are available. Is there a method to mount this array from a live CD so I can export the VM images. I have backups of the important ones but I'd lose 18 hours of data and a new PBX VM that was just finished but not backed up yet. I've been reading and testing various suggestions from the web but until I get this unit back up all phones and E-Mail are down, which leads to a slight panic, which makes it difficult to read and understand :) The backup server is at another location so I'm trying to recover first. Gradually adjust NTP sync over time?

Suppose you have server A and server B. Server B is running 60 seconds too fast, while server A is accurate. Is there a way to gradually move server B's time back into sync with server A, without making a drastic, immediate change to the clock? In other words, we would like to 'smear' the difference across several hours or days to ensure there are no drastic changes in timestamps, etc.

How do I set up a subversion repository so that svn can use an svnserve running locally? I own the repository. svnserve -d -r ... runs as me. svn mkdir -m 'make trunk' svn://localhost/redeye/trunk fails with svn: Authorization failed There is no request for credentials. suggestion for filesystem or general performance optimization

Hi, recently I noticed, that we have some performance issues regarding our central samba fileserver. Red Hat EL 5.8, samba3x-3.5.10-0.109. Doing a rsync, scp or accessing a share from a client and copy large files (e.g. 3 GB ISO), I do get a read / write average about 60 to 90 MB/sec. So LAN and general hardware can work at max. lan speed. But copying or syncing small files, e.g. user profiles etc. or doing a backup of the smaller files lets drop the average performance to 10 MB/Sec or less :( We use ext3 (noatime), the storage is connected by iscsi, it is a sun storage with sas harddisk. All suggestions so far: migrate to ext4 and good luck :) I read a couple of filesystem comparisons and ext4 looks like the best option, but what else could I do or expect? Locking? Limits ... blocksizes, more RAM (4GB installed), we have about 600GB of user data. so not really much... Thanks for any suggestion or hint . Regards . NTP server problem behind firewall

Hello! I would like to setup an NTP server for my Windows network using CentOS 6.3 with firewall turned on. As I learned the NTP protocol uses port 123 UDP. I have two NIC cards. One for internal network and one for access internet. Both cards in private address range. The problem is when I am using firewall described below the client cannot access the server. No idea why. Without firewall everything works flawless. So the problem is not in the NTP configuration. No idea why but with disabled firewall the first query gives error but all other query is work. I am using arpwatch to see what is happen on network (new machines and so). Not know is that related to the problem or not. First I had used the system-config-firewall generated firewall (standard firewall with port 123:udp added). No success, client cannot connect. Next I made a script for myself and saved with 'service iptables save' command. The configuration is: eth0 10.0.0.99/24 eth1 10.0.1.10/24 The script for making firewall rules: iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT iptables -F iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -s 10.0.0.0/24 -p udp --dport 123 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -s 10.0.0.0/24 -p tcp --dport 123 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -m limit --limit 5/min -j LOG --log-prefix "iptables denied: " --log-level 7 iptables -A INPUT -j DROP iptables -P FORWARD DROP iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT Windows client time server is set to 10.0.0.99. Network issue in CentOS 6.3

Hi Guys, Just found an issue with CentOS 6.3. The network is getting inaccessible at times. I see in sysconfig/ntpd the option g is set which means huge offset is one time ignored. But my understanding of ntpd is, it slows or accelerated kernel clock but does not make huge jumps... OpenMPI I/O not working

Hi list, It appears there is a problem with the OpenMPI I/O library on CentOS 6.2 & 6.3 (package openmpi-1.5.4-1.el6.x86_64). When I compile the attached program it ends up in the error path since MPI_File_open returns 16. The corresponding (unhelpful) message is: MPI_ERR_OTHER: known error not in list I couldn't find any pointers on the net and the same program works with OpenMPI 1.4.5 on a debian system. Spamassassin under CentOS-6.3

Spamassassin seems to have become more-or-less non-functional in use with KMail on my server. It appears to be running OK, but only catches about 20% of my spam. I wonder if others have experienced this decline? I suspect that sa-learn is not performing properly. (I run sa-learn nightly on my spam, which is saved in ~/Maildir/.Spam/cur/ , through the default spamassassin installation.) Eg I receive more or less identical spam many times without it being caught. Also, about 35% of the spam that gets through is in foreign languates - Russian, Chinese, Arabic and Turkish - and it would help if I could get rid of this. I read up about catching such email in spamassassin, but did not understand exactly what changes are required. One difficultly I have is that there seem many places where one can make changes in spamassassin settings. Am I right in thinking that all such changes can be made in .spamassassin/user_prefs ? bash job control and signals

I want to suspend a script using a signal but that does not work as I want. I made an example script: $ cat script #!/bin/bash echo $$ gkrellm If run this script gkrellm starts up and I can use job control from the terminal to suspend the script (CTRL-Z) and resume it (fg or bg). If I suspend I can see that gkrellm freezes (that's why I choose gkrellm in this example): $ ./script 23632 --CTRL-Z-- [3]+ Stopped ./script $ fg ./script Next I want to do exactly the same but from another terminal using a signal: kill -SIGSTOP 23632 [3]+ Stopped ./script So the bash script is indeed suspended, but the gkrellm keeps running. I can of course signal SIGSTOP to gkrellm and then this gkrellm will suspend as well. I have however an application that suspends my script and I cannot change this application. I want all processes that are children also to become suspended. I tried to add a trap, but that did not work. Any idea how to make this work? Theo

Greetings, I have a CSV file with three fields. eg. a1,b1,c1 a2,b2,c2 .... I wanted the output to be: b1,c1,a1 b2,c2,a2 .... the command cut -d, -f2,3,1 <file> returns a1,b1,c1 cut -d, -f2,3 <file> works as advertised. Is it specific to linux? In that case how do I go about swapping two columns? I do not think a gazzillion byte gui is required. The file size is about 43Megs. any ideas? -- Regards, Rajagopal

KVM as a desktop

I am nearing the end of a project that moved our disparate services and hosts onto kvm virtualized servers. What I am now contemplating is setting up my desktop as a virtual host and using one of the guests as my primary workstation. However, I am not sure how this would work in practice. I am accustomed to working with virtual instances via ssh (a terminal window) and with my desktop system in a Gnome window manager. Is there a reference somewhere that outlines the mechanics of logging into a virtual guest's graphical desktop directly from the physical console of the kvm host system? -- *** E-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel *** James B. I like to use freenx to host the desktop and the NX client to display it. That should work regardless of whether the desktop is a VM or not and regardless of the OS or location of the display - and it wouldn't surprise me if it performs better than whatever the built-in KVM mechanism uses. updatedb taking too long

Hi list For some reason mlocate is taking a long time when I run the updatedb command. Have a look! [root@beta:~] #time updatedb real 19m48.729s user 0m0.400s sys 0m2.728s It's not a big volume by any means [root@beta:~] #df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/xvda1 75G 9.1G 63G 13% / So I'm wondering what could be causing this command to take so long. I'm running centos 5.8 in a xen vm. I was hoping I could get some advice that would help me troubleshoot this problem. Thanks! CUPS driver for an HP LJ M602?

We just got two of these HP LJ M602 "enterprise" printers in, and I'm trying to work out what driver/ppd. The model's not listed in the current - does anyone know what might work for it? I really don't want to have to install hplips on 140 or 150 systems.... mark

Hi, I just tried to install CentOS 6.3 netinstall and got the error message -- Disc Not Found -- The CentOS disc was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the CentOS disc and press OK to retry. How can I insert a disc which is already inserted? What am I missing? Log viewing and analysis tools

I have a requirement to allow our security officer to regularly view and analyze the logging and auditing results of one of the machines in our lab. He comes from the Microsoft Windows world and is not a *nix trained person. I know I can configure logwatch. I can also create a script containing various 'aureport' runs into a cron job. Any recommendations for a GUI-based tool that would be easy for him to learn? Dave M

Hi guys, I want to build openvswitch kernel module, and my centos is 6.0, kernel version is 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.x86_64. But i cannot find the kernel-headers-2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.x86_64. I use the yum command to install kernel-headers package: yum install kernel-headers-2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.x86_64, it says no package available. (BTW My yum repos is coming from http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=30.) Please help me if you have this package, or plz tell me where can find it. Thanks in advanced, Kris

vi defaults in 6.x

When I use copy/paste text into a window running vi, if there is a single line starting with '#', in the pasted content, it adds a # to all subsequent lines and indents each an additional level. Is there some way to eliminate this bizarre behavior, preferably globally and permanently so I don't have to repeat some change for every machine/user where I might log in? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

OT: what are all these probes from my firewall log????

I'm getting a gazillion of these probes in my firewall logs. I don't understand what's going on here,... These all look like bootp requests from 10.21.72.1, to 255.255.255.255. there's certainly no 10.x.x.x here on this network, and I don't get the destination address... is it possible to send packets out onto the internet addressed like that? whois doesn't turn up anything on 10.21.72.1. Anybody got suggestions on how I'd track this down? Thanks! Centos machine sometimes unreachable

I have a simple perl script that every few hours pings the handful of machines on my LAN. Lately I've sometimes been getting ping of 192.168.0.1 succeeded ping of 192.168.0.7 succeeded ping of 192.168.0.5 FAILED ping of 192.168.0.6 succeeded ping of 192.168.0.9 succeeded This machine in question has been running Centos faithfully for about six years and no recent changes to it have been made. When I try and ping the machine manually it works. /var/og/messages does not seem irregular. Does anyone know know what might be the problem or what else I might check? Thanks, Richard

write-intent bitmap

I found lots of complaints about performance degradation for md raid with enabled write-intent bitmap. See http://blog.liw.fi/posts/write-intent-bitmaps/ for example. So I wanted to it off. I let it sync and then removed the bitmap. Do you know of a way to not enable a write-intent bitmap while installing? I had a look at the Kickstart section in Upstreams Installation guide but found nothing. My only idea was a %post section stop the sync (hmm, but how, I think I have to consult mdadm(8) remove the bitmap start the sync again Maybe there is better way? Some kind of trick? I realize that I can set a bigger chunk size (but how big?) for the bitmap.
