[KVM] reporting VM state

I recently set up a CentOS 6.2 hypervisor and created a Win2k8 virtual machine. In order to save space and time backing up the VM, I want to minimize the amt of unused disk space in the VM. Does KVM have the built-in ability to view the amt of free space left in a VM? Or is this feature I have to create myself to have the hypervisor and VM aware of each other? - Joe If you type "Google" into Google, you can break the Internet. -- Jen Barber

Mysql cluster vs. mysql-libs

Hi, it seems even a minimal install of Centos 6.2 now requires mysql-libs as a dependency for postfix and cronie. When I try to install the mysql cluster rpms from mysql.com I get a collision between the files. Since this is the first time I get into contact with mysql cluster I wonder if somebody has an idea how to resolve this or knows alternative packages that don't conflict with mysql-libs? First I want to thank all of you who responded to me both on this list and in the CentOS wiki. Your responses helped greatly! I want to say that if you are running CentOS 5 and you do not have a overriding reason to go to CentOS 6, stay where you are. It was so much easier installing CentOS 6 on a new machine, migrating is next to impossible. Here's where I am today: 1. The base DVD install would not allow me to run the gnome desktop at 1920x1080 resolution with the default nVidia driver, the highest resolution I could obtain was 1024x768. However the text screen worked just fine after I introduced the video=1920x1080 in the grub.conf file. 2. When I installed the nVidia closed source drivers, the gnome desktop ran perfectly in the high resolution mode. The text mode then dropped to 1024x768 even though it retained the video=1920x1080 parameter (could it be those blacklist parameters introduced to disable the noveau drivers?). 3. During the installation I instituted software raid-1 along with LVM. It all worked perfectly until I got to the Boot Loader screen and instead of using the default (/dev/sda) I used what I thought would work in a raid-1 environment IF one of the hard drives went bad. I chose to install the boot loader in /dev/md0. Of course it would not boot. I recovered from this by going through the install and choosing to upgrade a existing installation and it allowed me to place the boot loader in /dev/sda. What that leaves me with is a raid-1 environment that works great as long as /dev/sda remains. How do I fix that??? 4. I still need to add all of those extra repositories (adobe; webmin; rpmfusion; etc). 5. I'm still trying to decide if I want a high resolution text screen (that I would use almost everyday) or a high resolution GUI screen (that I'll only use for certain application installs)??? At my 'real' job, we use RHEL and we've done some things using RHEL 6.2 for POC (Proof Of Concept) projects. With a POC, we install using a standard installation DVD (as opposed to using our RH Satellite Server). All of this to say that there are application installation options that really fit the needs of a server installation, you can choose 'Server' and 'Server GUI', which installs the gnome GUI without selecting a desktop environment.. Some things we run require a GUI to install (Oracle DB; IBM DB2 UDB; IBM WebSphere; etc.). How do I select this type of environment using CentOS 6.2? In other words, I'm running CentOS 6.2 x86_64 Desktop TIA, Gene Poole + It's impossible for everything to be true. +

cluster.conf validating, but cman not starting

There was a small hitch in that the "Twinview" option wasn't available (it was present but grayed out) on the NVidia control panel, but entering nvidia-xconfig --twinview on the command line as root did the trick. What to use on CentOS 6.2 w/ an Epson Stylus Photo 2200

Epson doesn't seem to have one; I see an rpm at openprinting.org, but that .rpm d/l I started around 11:30 my time, and the d/l slowed, and slowed, and it's been at 21% and "1 hr 17 min to go" for it seems like close to half an hour. I d/l a tar.bz2, but I'm not sure I want to build and install it - my use of this printer is temporary, and I want to be able to uninstall it all. I also can't seem to find what some of the Epson drivers in the std. CentOS CUPS packages handle. Anyone have any pointers? mark

How to rotate PHP error log - since it belongs to apache

Hello, I'm using CentOS 6.2 with the stock rpm php-5.3.3-3.el6_2.8.x86_64 and the following /etc/php.ini file: error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_DEPRECATED display_errors = Off error_log = /var/log/php/php_errors.log and that file is very useful for me because I have many custom PHP-scripts at my site, but that file keeps growing too... :-) So my question is for how to rotate it (esp. since it should be owned by "apache" user) - what do you guys use? Hello List, I see that installing mysql in Centos 6.x creates a mysql user with a login shell of /bin/bash. Is a default password also installed? In dealing with an unrelated issue I came across this in rsyslog.conf. # The authpriv file has restricted access. authpriv.* /var/log/secure # Log all the mail messages in one place. mail.* -/var/log/maillog # Log cron stuff cron.* /var/log/cron Why is there a "-" before /var/log/maillog? This character is not present before any of the other log files specified in /etc/rsyslog.conf. custom kernel build

Hi all, I have donwloaded 2.6.32.59 from kernel.org, extracted the source, did make menuconfig to select/deselect items then did make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install, make install and rebooted. first message I got was that ext4 was not supported. So I verified that ext4 was selected and it was. So I looked at the size of the /boot/initramfs* items. My custom one is really small compared to the normal one. My question is - what controls the items that get put in there (the initramfs stuff) when you do a "make install" for a custom kernel? Clearly it is not picking up the "normal" centos items that are in the other initramfs files. Thanks, Jerry

gnome / gdm mess

Hello, My first attempt to install Gnome is not a bright success. If I boot in runlevel 5, using gdm, I get the login screen, but after login I get sometimes only the root window (no icons, no toolbar, no menu, nothing but keyboard shortcuts), sometimes the icons are here but not the toolbars... If I use startx from runlevel 3, everything is fine. As I don't know Gnome, I have very probably messed something during install (CentOS-6, x86_64, using uptodate netinstall iso, starting from Minimal Desktop). But I have no clue about where to look, or how to debug it. Can someone point me to some useful doc ? P.S. I'm surprised to see gdm and X running on tty1 (in runlevel 5, not 3). Is it correct ? R packaging question

I have been working on packaging (for internal use only) multiple versions of R (eg 2.14.1, 2.14.2, 2.15.0) such that I can install these RPMs and provide the different versions of R (especially 2.14.x and 2.15.x) to the biostatisticians that require them. I have been messing around with the R.spec file but I have been unable to get the package to provide R in the location I would like: /usr/lib64/R-2.14.1/ /usr/lib64/R-2.15.0/ Now I know this can be done but I am just having some difficulty in getting it to work correctly. I have tried multiple variations in the spec playing with adding -%{version} to the paths within the spec file, as well as even using -libdir=/usr/lib64/R-%{version} which works to a point, but basically provides: /usr/lib64/R-2.14.1/R/ /usr/lib64/R-2.15.0/R/ I have attached the spec file I have been modifying and would appreciate any insights into getting this packaging correct. Dual NVidia cards, dual monitors

I've just installed CentOS 6.2 on an HP xw8600 with two NVidia GeForce 8800 GT video cards in it. I have two Dell monitors than ran configured as a single contiguous desktop when this was a Windows 7 machine. I've only been able to access one of the two monitors under CentOS, although the system demonstrates some awareness of the second GPU/monitor, because the second monitor shows the standard CentOS 6 image while the machine is running. In addition, when it's starting up or shutting down a large wait cursor is displayed in that second monitor, and also shows the message "shutting down..." when that's going on. However, the Display applet in the System | Preferences panel menu shows only the one monitor, and hitting the Detect Monitors button doesn't help. Just to test the obvious, I switched the DVI cables coming out of the two video cards and as you'd expect what shows in the two monitors is also switched. When I do an lspci at the command line I see at the bottom of the listing: 60:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G92 [GeForce 8800 GT] (rev a2) 80:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G92 [GeForce 8800 GT] (rev a2) And the output from xrandr is: Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2560 x 1600, maximum 8192 x 8192 DVI-I-3 connected 2560x1600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 646mm x 406mm 2560x1600 59.9* 1280x800 59.9 DVI-I-4 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) I've done some considerable googling, and haven't found any discussions that offer a solution for my situation (dual video cards). Hi all, I am trying to configure utf8 in mysql under centos6 to display special characters, like accents. I use this mysql instance to store plain syslog logs. Hello, I am trying to setup a node.js based website called 'hummingbird'. wins option in nsswitch.conf not working

xeyes kills freenx session

I was trying an assortment of things to get a remote X session working (where I had forgotten to install the xauth package...) and noticed that running xeyes kills my freenx session. This happened whether in the NX/freenx session itself or when run on a remote machine via 'ssh -Y', started from a window in a freenx session. Is that a known problem or do I have something set up wrong? Install 6.2 via wireless

Folks I have a HP 8540w workstation, and just for kicks, I wanted to see if I could install Centos 6.2 using only the wireless connection, and the cd/dvd reader. I tried the "net-install" CD image, but it never found the wireless adaptor. How for up the chain must I go to succeed? Net-install (doesn-work) CD containing minimal DVD containing the full image? This effort was more than academic; one of my clients has a box that is connected only through wireless, and we need to do the install. Any advice you may have would be appreciated. David

KVM with 6.2 i686 guest

I just installed a KVM guest, centos 6.2 i686 (6.2 x86_64 host) and the network module is loaded . The modules is/are 8139too,8139cp is what lsmod shows. Dmesg shows link up but ifconfig does not give me an address? service network restart shows OK no errors but again no address. I set the ifcfg-eth0 file to not be NM controlled, onboot yes and rebooted. Same no address. I run 5.8 images all the time and they get the address? Did I forget something? Jerry

Well, this is getting more and more unpleasant. Turned out my manager and the other admin were also working on this. One of the times they restarted *something*, or maybe my reinstall, took care of the first problem. Now, however, we're seeing a ton of exceptions... and what's struck me is that I'm *not* getting the normal output from sealert. For example, sealert -v -l 42f9d4f6-6327-4030-b927-d17ab9f4f0d6 2012-05-31 16:52:13,387 [plugin.INFO] importing /usr/share/setroubleshoot/plugins/__init__ as plugins SELinux is preventing /bin/chmod from using the fowner capability. I used the -v to try to get more; I'm not seeing the screenful that usually has more useful info. Could something have been screwed up with selinux, in some way? I know that the other admin installed something, but that was via a ruby-on-rails utility, and shouldn't have looked at anything, much less modified anything.... mark

issue with CentOS 6.2 autofs

I have an issue with CentOS 6.2's autofs/automount. When I issue "service autofs start (or restart)" the automount daemon starts as expected, however, I am not able to access any of the exports nfs directories; but if I shutdown the automount daemon and start it by just issuing "/usr/sbin/automount", I am able to access all of the nfs directories. If the system reboots, the nfs directories become no longer available until I stop the automount daemon and restart by issuing "/usr/sbin/automount". portmap/NIS mystery

Hello all, I have a server on my private network that is configured as an NIS server and mapped to a "public" IP address on a firewall. All other TCP ports (SSH, iperf, you name it) are visible from the outside - but the portmapper-managed ports (port 111 itself and the YPSERV/YPXFRD ports, etc.) are not visible from the outside - even though they are alive and well on the internal network. So, here's the question: is there anything special as far as portmapper's networking/security setup that is at play here? Thanks. Boris.

question for those who run mail servers

Not technically a centos question, but a lot of you guys seem to manage some large systems and I could use some clarification on a postfix setting.* *reject_unknown_client_hostname (in postfix < 2.3 reject_unknown_client) When I first used this there were issues with users trying to send mail through the server from hotels, wireless spots, etc. This was solved by pushing up permit sasl_authenticated. I took it out after those issues. I read many online posts from 2008 saying too many false positives. (though none were clear if those were incoming mail or from mail users) Do you use reject_unknown_client_hostname? Other than someone trying to access the server to send mail through it as a user I do not see how this could be a bad setting and am thinking of using it. A person sending out a mail to the server, even if in that badly set up hotel wireless should be using their gmail, yahoo, own server, isp mail servers and should not be directly sending from their iphone....is that correct? or do you ignore the use of this setting still? -thanks for any updates on the use of this setting.

Setting up an iSCSI SAN

Hi, Has anyone ever actually implemented a replicating iSCSI SAN using CentOS? I saw directions here: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Ha-Drbd It looks doable, but I am not the strongest linux person and would like to hear if anyone has tried and if there any caveats. Also, I noticed that these directions are for CentOS 5. Is it pretty much the same for CenOS 6? Lastly, this might sound crazy, but we are mostly a Hyper-V shop. Hyper-V supports CentOS 6.0-6.2 and 5.5-5.7. Could I implement this as a guest in Hyper-V or am I just asking for trouble? Postfix on CentOS-6.2 evidently does not use upstart style configurations. The author evidently has no plans on altering Postfix's structure to accommodate upstart any time soon, if ever (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/postfix-users/message/274670) Thus Postfix starts and stops using a sysvinit style script. Nonetheless, I have an upstart configuration that I wish to be dependent upon Postfix start and stop events. Is anyone here aware of some straight forward way of accomplishing this? I am considering placing initctl emit statements into the sPostfix script. I hadn't paid attention when one or two folks recently posted this, but it's hit us, also: $ sealert -l d1655210-f43c-4737-98dc-86b6aac82bb6 Entity: line 53: parser error : Input is not proper UTF-8, indicate encoding ! Bytes: 0x99 0x3C 0x2F 0x74 <tpath>`</tpath> ^ failed to connect to server: xmlParseDoc() failed I tried reinstalling sealert-server, but no joy. I can't really reboot this server on a blind hope that doing so would fix it. Anyone have a clue for a way to solve this? mark

Hello, I have a strong suspicion that something is not working right on my el6 laptop. I have a usb 3g dongle that works fine on windows and ubuntu. It's one of those ZTE dual-personality devices (usb id 19d2:2000). When it's plugged in, it appears as usb storge device, then needs to be ejected, then it appears as usb modem with few serial ports. This is handled properly by udev on ubuntu, however when I plug the thing into el6, nothing happens. Centos 6.2 ATI Rage XL on board graphics seg faults when setting up the screen saver

I have installed Centos 6.2 on: 1) Tyan S2892 with ATI on board Rage XL graphics ( Centos x86_64 version), 8GB memory, 3ware Raid array 2) Supermicro Dual Xeon Single core, old machine, with ATI onboard Rage XL graphics (Centos i386 version), 12GB memory, 3ware Raid array Both machines exhibit the same error. While trying to select a screen saver (clock or blank screen) the application seg faults. Other machines that we have installed 6.2 on with either a newer graphics chip set on board or a separate graphics card seem to work fine. Anyone with a work around or fix for this? Has anyone reported this upstream as a bug? Just Stuck

OK, I did the deal and I am in the process of upgrading/migrating from CentOS 5.8 x86_64 to CentOS 6.2 x86_64. But, I'm stuck with a gnome GUI that only sees 1024x768. Under CentOS 5.8 it saw 1920x1080 (without much work from me). The command I was used to , system-config-display, is gone and I've read that xrandr is the replacement. I can't find a usage document on this command. The basic description of the hardware involved is: nVidia GT 7300 video card Viewsonic 24" monitor I don't have the exact specs for this hardware, but I can post it later if needed. I've run the following command: xrandr -q And sometimes it returns a list of modes that range from 5 entries to 15 entries. Any help will be appreciated! iSCSI offload with Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM5709.

Hello all. We recently purchased HP Proliant DL380 G7 server and also a HP Lefthand P4500 G2 24TB iSCSI box. The server itself has Quad Ethernet based on the BCM5709 Chipset from Broadcom (NetXtreme II). My main question is about iSCSI offload mechanism, as iSCSI itself is pretty new to me but I have gotten a good hold on it tho. I have managed to setup and configured our Lefthand box into our iSCSI Network. iSCSI network : 192.168.200.0/24 I have also managed to setup and configure a fully operational Software based iSCSI traffic from the server to the Target without problems. Everything just works fine. Until I thought about iSCSI offload functionality offered by the Network Adapter in the server. As for the Software based iSCSI connection I have bonded(NIC Teamed) two NIC's on the server into a ALB(Adaptive Load Balancing) configuration. Those are eth2,eth3 interfaces configured as bond1 with IP address of : 192.168.200.20 (iSCSI network). My decision to team up eth2 and eth3 into ALB was clearly based on the HP Lefthand configuration guidelines. They state that the Lefthand box itself should be configured into ALB. So I configured the server also. But, am I misunderstanding the iSCSI thing about offload and or network configurations ? If I'm going to use offload mechanisms do I need to get rid of the bonding setup ? snmpd not working well with selinux?

Hello, I am trying to use SNMP on a CentOS 6.2 server, and am using the 'pass_persist' configuration command: pass_persist .1.3.6.1.4.1.141.1 /usr/local/sbin/snmp-iostat I have set the file context of 'snmpd_exec_t' on the snmp-iostat program. If I disable SELinux, then it all works fine (that is, I can then snmpget/snmpwalk for OIDs in the configured pass_persist OID, and values are returned). If I enable SELinux and start the snmpd daemon, as root, from the command line, then again it all works fine. However, if I enable SELinux, and startup the SNMP daemon using the 'service' command, as occurs at system boot, then I get no values returned. I get, for example: snmpwalk -v 2c -c public localhost enterprises.141.1.1.10 SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.141.1.1.10 = No Such Instance currently exists at this OID (Yes I am using the enterprise number 141 which doesn't belong to us. I have applied for a site enterprise number, but heard nothing yet.) I really don't want to disable SELinux completely, but 'getsebool' shows no variables relating to SNMP so I am a bit stuck as to how I can get this to work. I also don't understand why it works with SELinux enabled when started from the command line, but not when started by the 'service' command. That seems very odd. Anyone any ideas about this? I am trying, without success, to create an upstart config file to automatically start and restart an ssh proxy. The command sting that I use in the script has been checked and verified from the shell but it fails in the upstart file. Probably. Lots of other things broke in same-major-rev updates until I gave up at FC6. Whether any particular machine runs or not has never been a priority for fedora. Maybe your hardware matches one of the developers. On the other hand, I had 2 4-year uptime runs with a pre-fedora RH 7.3. (had to move it once). Hi Are there any future plans for CentOS to build and directly provide oVirt packages compatible with CentOS 6? If not, has anyone tried the packages available at http://www.dreyou.org/ovirt/ and would these be considered fit for a CentOS-based oVirt production setup? I've heard many great things about oVirt. However I would prefer to use a CentOS-based solution in a production environment rather than Fedora. Thanks in advance.

LVM superblock version

Is there an lvm command to print out any kind of version information for the LVM superblock, similar to what "mdmadmin -E" does for raid. How can I tell whether a mountable device with LVMs on it can be safely moved between CentOS 5 and CentOS 6 and/or potentially other Linux distributions? I know that that CentOS 6 supports 'lvconvert -merge'. Is this implementation purely in the lvm software or does it require a different superblock? Can I take an LVM setup created under CentOS 6 and read it on a CentOS 5 system? Thanks, Nataraj
