I have no idea. Perhaps I misunderstood what the ntpd man page referred to as a panic. If it is not ntpd then I still need to discover some way of ensuring that all the KVM guests that were active at the time of a power failure automatically come back on line when the KVM host system starts up. I cannot find any reference to how this is done. Are there any recommended solutions? We encountered a problem with respect to KVM virtual host restore and NTP. Specifically, our VM test host was shutdown by an extended power outage and when power returned all of the restored guests were immediately shutdown by ntp because the time differential between the restored systems and that of the ntpd sync servers exceeded the panic threshold. This is not an acceptable situation so in the absence of something more elegant we are contemplating shutting down ntpd on virtual hosts and scheduling regular ntpd -q from cron instead. Is there an alternative to this? If not then what would be a recommended scheduling interval? -- *** E-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel *** James B. Where did it find it and why is that number not the same as the other stuff, notably the kernel, since it appears to be a kernel version number? Users on Machine A with rights to log into and run jobs on Machine B using ssh want to be able to view and cancel print jobs on Machine B. This is easily accomplished via the commandline with lpq and lprm, but is there a GUI that I can give them? Force permissions by directory

And it is not easy to remove manually. Installing CIFS on CentOS4

Hello, I have a CentOS4 install and I am trying to mount a Windows Server 2008 folder. When I use this command: mount -t cifs //10.1.1.17/Org/MR\ Ops/ test, it only mounts the Org folder. When I try the same thing on a newer computer (Fedora 15), it mounts all the way to MR Ops. So I am pretty sure that my cifs file needs to be updated, but I am having a really hard time doing this. I updated to the newest cif available for CentOS 4.9, but that still is not new enough. Can anyone tell me how to install the newer cifs on my CentOS 4? Thank you, Jeff Sadino

This is annoying. I've got a user who needs chrome installed. I google, and find there's a google.repo. I rpm --import the signing key... and cannot find *where* on google.com I can install their own repo from. Every hit that looks even vaguely close tells me "edit /etc/yum.repos.d/google.repo. I don't want to manually create one, I want *theirs*. Clues for the poor? mark

200 Stream not found errors in flash player and firefox

Hi List, I have been getting the above errors for the last few months and extensive google foo has been less than conclusive - but indicates that the requesting flash player is somehow putting the wrong url content into the request. After I recently did a yum update on my wife's laptop she too started getting these errors. She has an old sony laptop running 5.8 and other than this error on various streaming tv links it is working just fine. Needless to say, she is less than thrilled with my IT skills at this point as she can no longer watch her favourite TV programs. So I decided to try and track down the problem on my own machine (CentOS 6.2) where yumex allows you to see and load older versions of a package. I started with a downgrade (and then a 2nd one .... and then the 5th one) of libflashplayer.so - fortunately rpmforge has older versions. Going right back to a 10.x version did not fix the problem. Thus I guess it is a firefox / xulrunner problem, however I am not happy to go back too many versions here as the exploit potential is much higher. Then I tried konqueror with flash enabled and guess what - no problems with any of the links that fail under firefox / libflashplayer. So my question to the list members - does anyone else have this problem with flash under firefox?? What do I do to fix it? TIA Rob

pvcreate limitations on big disks?

OK folks, I'm back at it again. Instead of taking my J4400 ( 24 x 1T disks) and making a big RAID60 out of it which Linux cannot make a filesystem on, I'm created 4 x RAID6 which each are 3.64T I then do : sfdisk /dev/sd{b,c,d,e} <<EOF ,,8e EOF to make a big LVM partition on each one. But then when I do : pvcreate /dev/sd{b,c,d,e}1 and then pvdisplay It shows each one as only half its actual size. But if I take the last one and wipe the partition table and just do pvcreate on the entire disk, it works pvcreate /dev/sde And then if I take the results from that and use the size to force a size on another PV I get it right too pvcreate /dev/sdd1 --setphysicalvolumesize=3.64T I'd use the entire disk expect that this seems dangerous to me because you do "sfdisk -l" and the disk appears to have no partition table which might entice someone to thing it is unused. And I'm not sure whether it is safe to use setphysicalvolumesize. Anyone know for sure? What are my alternatives? Centos 5.8 has no "Virtualization" install option

Hi, when I try to install Centos 5.8 on a Dell r410 then I don't get a "Virtualization" option during the package selection of the installer. Centos 5.7 does show that option fine. Is this a known issue? Regards, Dennis

Hi. My provider rebooted the server today or the server rebooted itself because of some problem, still don't know. Anyway: In /var/log/messages now I get zillions of modprobe: FATAL: Could not read '/lib/modules/2.6.32-220.17.1.el6.x86_64/kernel/net/ipv6/ipv6.ko': Invalid module format I am not able to find any solution to this. ??? SMB shares and LDAP

Hi, I have a scenario were I only have OpenLDAP running for authing my Linux and Windows client. Windows is using the pGina LDAP client to talk to my OpenLDAP server, no problems, working like a charm. However I need to setup a simple Samba file server-only. None of my Unix boxes have a compete /etc/passwd file as every one auths against OpenLDAP. Is there some kind of passwd backend option in my smb.conf that allows it to query my OpenLDAP server? Hi, one of our rented root-server has a problem with the network-adapter.The network is interrupted from time to time and i can not longer connect to our server. We can only reboote (remote) the server and restart the network. I think it was an network-driver-problem from an "Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network" --- e1000e But now i have install a new kernel-driver and i have the same problem again. Centos 6 - vnc - authentication is required to set the network proxy used for downloading packages

A window keeps popping up on my remote desktop stating "authentication is required to set the network proxy used for downloading packages. An application is attempting to perform an action that requires privileges. Authentication as the super user is required to perform this action" and asking for the root password. If I hit cancel it comes back several minutes later. I've found several references to this issue doing various google searches, but nothing that clearly states a solution. Secure VNC access from iPad

Dear Gurus If any of you have been successful in using an iPad as a VNC client with SSH tunnelling, I'd love to know how it's done. I have tried using the iSSH application, but without success. I know that the server is accessible from a Windows client (using TigerVNC), via an SSH tunnel, so the server is properly configured. If you have a working example, please let me know what magic sauce you used. Thanks David

Centos 6 - tigervnc - numbers on keypad

I have a ncurses-based program that runs on a vnc desktop on a remote computer. On Centos 5 you could enter numbers into the program using the numeric keypad. I just installed a new machine running Centos 6 to do this same job and now numbers can only be entered using the numbers across the top of the keyboard. The program still recognizes the keys on the keypad when numlock is not set (so you get home, pgup, left and right cursor, etc.) but I get nothing when I set the numlock key. Having said that, I do see activity when I set numlock and run the xev program, so the keypresses are obviously getting through. How can I make this thing accept numbers from the numeric keypad on Centos 6? Hello all I am setting up a Centos 6 machine with one network card & one onboard network port. Both are recognized & work. Onboard Network port is unused yet, but is required for dedicated access to LTSP LAN, which would allow older PIII machines to boot from this system. I have installed LTSP but again Networking seems to be the problem area, as the clients won't boot from this machine. Have muddled & tinkered with Networking a bit...deleted & reconfigured the ifcfg files again & again but as I don't understand NetworkManager and Google is not helping get relevant results, so I have brought the system to minimum working condition, where one network card is providing LAN access on which Internet Router is configured. And now I am posting my system's condition below as output of various commands. Now let's come to what I want to do with this machine....The Onboard network port for LTSP services....Network card on network 192.168.1.0/24(192.168.1.1 is the ISP ADSL router) to provide LAN access & Internet access. Now what I want to do is to create a third network for my virtual machines (KVM) say 172.16.1.1/24. Now create some sort of dummy bridge and get these machines talking to the Internet....said bridge to either forward the packets through the normal Internet path or somehow use NAT to do it. I think this should be doable but haven't come across any example or any tutorial for this. Now comes why I want a separate network....why not use 192.168.1.0/24...problem is...I don't want to disable Network Manager by putting Managed=NO in my ifcfg file. As with Network Manager enabled, I can use USB devices whenever my ISP goes down....and I'm afraid it happens more frequently than I care to bear. I frankly also don't understand how Network Manager works....in a broad manner....literature I found was either too technical or too old or was focussed on a particular problem. I would like to know a network/bridge/device topology that can solve my issue....three networks...lan. ltsp, virtual machines, all having access to each other & the net, while keeping the option of using networkmanager or any other tool (I'm open) to plugin any other wireless internet access device. Error in Squirrelmail

Yesterday I upgrade my CentOS e-mail server and I changed the version of Squirrelmail and PHP. Now, after the changes, I can't send e-mail by squirrelmail. I can send only by e-mail clients like Thunderbird and Outlook in the network. I did a backup of the old configuration and data files and I replaced it on the new configuration, but nothing happen. Hi! This is a rpm question. For example, mysql-server is adding mysql user with uid 27 Is this something I can ask the rpm db? It seems not, because something like the following seems to give me no useful information regarding users or uids $ rpm -qa --provides|grep mysql I would like to ask: what package would install uid XXX. st1000spex ethernet card and centos 6.2

Dear List, I am still having difficulty installing a second ethernet card in a new CentOS 6.2 install. Tom Bishop was kind enough to give me an excellent link to figure out how to change the device names the way I need to have them. It looks to me that CentOS is recognizing the st1000spex card from StarTech but I am unable to get data to go in or out of it. The StarTech manual for this card does not include linux as being supported, but several vendors do have their blurbs with linux support caveats. Unfortunately, the StarTech site appears down today, and I have not been able to see if they have documentation as to whether there is a need for special linux drivers. Do any of you have a StarTech st1000spex, or any suggestions? Thanks, Greg Ennis

Tomcat5 with Oracle/Sun jdk on CentOS 5.8

I know this question could be asked on tomcat or possibly other mailing lists, but I'm hoping I can get some help here instead of joining yet another list. I'm running tomcat5 on CentOS 5.8. I'm trying to setup Oracle/Sun java rather than icedtea. I've installed the latest jdk 1.7 and setup alternatives on centos for java and javac: # java -version java version "1.7.0_03" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_03-b05) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.1-b02, mixed mode) I've also set /etc/tomcat5/tomcat5.conf to point JAVA_HOME to this jdk. NFS - Strage Problem

Hi Dear List, i am experiencing strange problem with NFS, they is CentOS 6.2 x86_64 machines. One CentOS is sharing two directories (following) /etc 192.168.0.41(rw,sync,no_root_squash) /var/named/master 192.168.0.41(rw,sync,no_root_squash) nfs is started on server side there are proper entries in fstab at client side for both shares. however server is able to mount "/etc" alright but not "/var/named/master" any idea ? why that. Hello Centos users! I'm doing a Centos 6 desktop oriented remix called Stella. This has been brewing since the summer and it's starting to get ready. :-) I've backported a lot of packages from Fedora and Rpmfusion and I bundle several other repos, too, resulting in a big range of software available, including but not limited to: LibreOffice, VLC, MPlayer, Shutter, Arista, Java, Flash, GParted, extra wifi drivers etc. You can read (just slightly) more about it here: http://li.nux.ro/stella. hack / spam/ probe /attack

so last night all my servers were severely probed and they tried to violate me (lol) the attack was so egregious I decided to contact the isp for that ip. Telepacific. The ip has some google searches that point to a few spam and a few attacks...So i assume a compromised server. So I sent them the info and said it must be a hacked server (the ip is on their business network) they responded ' you are not a customer and we cannot by law discuss a customer with you' They wanted me to contact my datacenter so they could look into it. I responded and told them the info again and they basically said it is up to my isp or datacenter to deal with it and to basically 'go away' that was my first attempt to notify an isp about a hacker/hacked computer on their servers....did not go so well. Is that the way they all deal with these issues? was not expecting that from the isp

Installation of CentOS 6 on KVM - Hangs

Greetings- I'm attempting to install CentOS-6 x86_64 to a virtual machine running via KVM on a Proxmox 1.9 system. The specs are 4x CPUs, 4GB RAM, and 160GB HDD. Installation proceeds fine using either minimal or netinstall CDs until installation of the selinux or qla2xx-firmware RPMs. At this point, the installation hangs, and never completes. I'm unable to see what is going on 'under the hood' on another TTY as the console does not appear to be accepting my CTL-ALT-Fx commands either. I have also tried installing using the full bin DVD1, but the initial installation errors out immediately noting the yum package cannot be read from source disk/etc. And yes, I have checked the MD5s on all downloaded ISOs. I can readily duplicate this. Any thoughts or pointers on the cause and/or solution? Thanks! --Tim

VMWare Issue

Ok. I run several linux distro's via vmware on top of my windows 7 machine. Currently have an Ubuntu 32-bit 10.4 guest for work. An Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit for misc stuff. Also an OEL 6.2 guest running an oracle database. I just installed CentOS 5.6 32-bit and I can't get the display to work right. When it first boots, the screen is very small and almost impossible to select the username field and log in. Once I log in if I de-select full screen and then re-select full-screen it updates to the correct size. I've installed vmware tools three times now. Inside the centos guess I set my resolution to 1920x1200, which matches my windows 7 machine as well as the resolution I run the other linux guests at. I set the monitor to "generic 1920x1200 LCD" because my monitor type isn't detected. (Samsung P2770H) Video adapter is set to vmware. (Actual device is an ATI HD 6950) Anyone have any ideas?

Setting overcommit_memory=2 kills system

Hello, In general I am in the habit of turning off memory overcommit because I believe it's a bad thing in a multi-user environment. This was never a problem on rhel5 systems, but on rhel6, I am having issues. When I try to set overcommit_memory=2, my system locks up. It basically behaves as if the memory is all used up... I see the same behavior on centos6 or rhel6. 6.2 minimal install NIC driver issue

I tried to upgrade one user's system, a Dell Optiplex GX620, and yum got a GPF. After *much* grief, I finally gave up, and rebuilt the system. Or, rather, I'm trying to. First problem: I did a minimal install from the graphical installer - I don't know if that's relevant - but when it boots, it does *not* install the NIC driver, tg3, on boot. I've got eth0 defined in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistant-net.rules, I made an /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0, and it's onboot, and in /etc/sysconfig/network, that says yes. As soon as I *manually* modprobe tg3, the network comes up. I'm still trying to solve the libpython2.6 update that GPFs.... I haven't had this on anyone else that was getting the 2.6.32-220.17 update.... mark

We have a 2-node Oracle RAC that keeps getting the following error: kernel: nfs: RPC call returned error 88 The storage being mounted is netapp. We don't see any errors/issues on the storage itself or the switches this client is connecting thru. The NFS network is a 2-interface ( 2 x 1Gb UTP) bond which shows no errors of any kind. We are mounting with the following mount options: rw,noac,nointr,bg,hard,timeo= 600,wsize=32768,rsize=32768,nfsvers=3,tcp This problem sometimes hits the OCR votedisk shares and causes the instance to crash. These systems were upgraded to 5.6 back in January. Currently running 2.6.32-300.4.1. Thanks for any info,

Postfix will not start due to permission errors on CentOS 6.2 x86

Hello everyone, I cannot get the Postfix service to start on my pristine copy of CentOS 6.2 (installed straight from a DVD, and 6.2 directly, not 6.0 with upgrades...not thatit should matter). Anyway, I copied over /var/spool/mail to this system by using tar, as well as /etc/services and /etc/passwd, etc. Now, it doesn't want to start. I get permission errors like: postfix/master: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/pickup pid 2006 exit 1 postfix/master:warning /usr/libexec/postfix/pickup: bad command startup -- throttling postfix/pickup: fatal: scan_dir_push: open directory maildrop: permission denied warning: the postfix sendmail command has set-uid root file permissions warning: or the command is run from a set-uid root process warning: the Postfix sendmail command must be installed without set-uid root file permissions Now, I Googled these errors, and didn't see any good specific help for CentOS. So, I did a yum erase postfix, which also erased dependencies. After I did that, I erased the /etc/postfix directory. I then reinstalled postfix with all the dependencies...and got the same errors. Then I googled the CentOS mailing list for help...nothing that applied to me turned up that I saw. I'm stumped. Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be?
