Tomcat5 with Oracle/Sun jdk on CentOS 5.8

I know this question could be asked on tomcat or possibly other mailing lists, but I'm hoping I can get some help here instead of joining yet another list. I'm running tomcat5 on CentOS 5.8. I'm trying to setup Oracle/Sun java rather than icedtea. I've installed the latest jdk 1.7 and setup alternatives on centos for java and javac: # java -version java version "1.7.0_03" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_03-b05) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.1-b02, mixed mode) I've also set /etc/tomcat5/tomcat5.conf to point JAVA_HOME to this jdk. I'd be willing to try jdk 1.5 or 1.6 if that is the fix, but I'm doubting that's the fix. I'm also not sure where tomcat5 set JRE_HOME. Been searching and can't find it. NFS - Strage Problem

Hi Dear List, i am experiencing strange problem with NFS, they is CentOS 6.2 x86_64 machines. One CentOS is sharing two directories (following) /etc 192.168.0.41(rw,sync,no_root_squash) /var/named/master 192.168.0.41(rw,sync,no_root_squash) nfs is started on server side there are proper entries in fstab at client side for both shares. however server is able to mount "/etc" alright but not "/var/named/master" any idea ? why that. Hello Centos users! I'm doing a Centos 6 desktop oriented remix called Stella. hack / spam/ probe /attack

so last night all my servers were severely probed and they tried to violate me (lol) the attack was so egregious I decided to contact the isp for that ip. Telepacific. The ip has some google searches that point to a few spam and a few attacks...So i assume a compromised server. So I sent them the info and said it must be a hacked server (the ip is on their business network) they responded ' you are not a customer and we cannot by law discuss a customer with you' They wanted me to contact my datacenter so they could look into it. I responded and told them the info again and they basically said it is up to my isp or datacenter to deal with it and to basically 'go away' that was my first attempt to notify an isp about a hacker/hacked computer on their servers....did not go so well. Is that the way they all deal with these issues? was not expecting that from the isp

Installation of CentOS 6 on KVM - Hangs

Greetings- I'm attempting to install CentOS-6 x86_64 to a virtual machine running via KVM on a Proxmox 1.9 system. The specs are 4x CPUs, 4GB RAM, and 160GB HDD. Installation proceeds fine using either minimal or netinstall CDs until installation of the selinux or qla2xx-firmware RPMs. At this point, the installation hangs, and never completes. I'm unable to see what is going on 'under the hood' on another TTY as the console does not appear to be accepting my CTL-ALT-Fx commands either. I have also tried installing using the full bin DVD1, but the initial installation errors out immediately noting the yum package cannot be read from source disk/etc. And yes, I have checked the MD5s on all downloaded ISOs. I can readily duplicate this. Any thoughts or pointers on the cause and/or solution? Thanks! --Tim

VMWare Issue

Ok. I run several linux distro's via vmware on top of my windows 7 machine. Currently have an Ubuntu 32-bit 10.4 guest for work. An Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit for misc stuff. Also an OEL 6.2 guest running an oracle database. I just installed CentOS 5.6 32-bit and I can't get the display to work right. When it first boots, the screen is very small and almost impossible to select the username field and log in. Once I log in if I de-select full screen and then re-select full-screen it updates to the correct size. I've installed vmware tools three times now. Inside the centos guess I set my resolution to 1920x1200, which matches my windows 7 machine as well as the resolution I run the other linux guests at. I set the monitor to "generic 1920x1200 LCD" because my monitor type isn't detected. (Samsung P2770H) Video adapter is set to vmware. (Actual device is an ATI HD 6950) Anyone have any ideas?

Setting overcommit_memory=2 kills system

Hello, In general I am in the habit of turning off memory overcommit because I believe it's a bad thing in a multi-user environment. This was never a problem on rhel5 systems, but on rhel6, I am having issues. When I try to set overcommit_memory=2, my system locks up. It basically behaves as if the memory is all used up... I see the same behavior on centos6 or rhel6. 6.2 minimal install NIC driver issue

I tried to upgrade one user's system, a Dell Optiplex GX620, and yum got a GPF. After *much* grief, I finally gave up, and rebuilt the system. Or, rather, I'm trying to. First problem: I did a minimal install from the graphical installer - I don't know if that's relevant - but when it boots, it does *not* install the NIC driver, tg3, on boot. I've got eth0 defined in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistant-net.rules, I made an /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0, and it's onboot, and in /etc/sysconfig/network, that says yes. As soon as I *manually* modprobe tg3, the network comes up. I'm still trying to solve the libpython2.6 update that GPFs.... I haven't had this on anyone else that was getting the 2.6.32-220.17 update.... mark

We have a 2-node Oracle RAC that keeps getting the following error: kernel: nfs: RPC call returned error 88 The storage being mounted is netapp. We don't see any errors/issues on the storage itself or the switches this client is connecting thru. The NFS network is a 2-interface ( 2 x 1Gb UTP) bond which shows no errors of any kind. We are mounting with the following mount options: rw,noac,nointr,bg,hard,timeo= 600,wsize=32768,rsize=32768,nfsvers=3,tcp This problem sometimes hits the OCR votedisk shares and causes the instance to crash. These systems were upgraded to 5.6 back in January. Currently running 2.6.32-300.4.1. Thanks for any info,

Postfix will not start due to permission errors on CentOS 6.2 x86

Hello everyone, I cannot get the Postfix service to start on my pristine copy of CentOS 6.2 (installed straight from a DVD, and 6.2 directly, not 6.0 with upgrades...not thatit should matter). Anyway, I copied over /var/spool/mail to this system by using tar, as well as /etc/services and /etc/passwd, etc. Now, it doesn't want to start. I get permission errors like: postfix/master: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/pickup pid 2006 exit 1 postfix/master:warning /usr/libexec/postfix/pickup: bad command startup -- throttling postfix/pickup: fatal: scan_dir_push: open directory maildrop: permission denied warning: the postfix sendmail command has set-uid root file permissions warning: or the command is run from a set-uid root process warning: the Postfix sendmail command must be installed without set-uid root file permissions Now, I Googled these errors, and didn't see any good specific help for CentOS. So, I did a yum erase postfix, which also erased dependencies. After I did that, I erased the /etc/postfix directory. I then reinstalled postfix with all the dependencies...and got the same errors. Then I googled the CentOS mailing list for help...nothing that applied to me turned up that I saw. I'm stumped. Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be? OT: Rewrite part of a message with rsyslog

Hi all, Sorry for the off-topic, but I have not found how to do this. I have installed a centos6 server to act as a syslog receiver. I need to rewrite all messages that comes from one server. For example a part of the message is: "27April2012 10:33:44 172.1.2.2 data >". Sometimes between 27April2012 and 10:33:44 comes with one white space, sometimes with two, etc. I need to normalize this log to use only one white space between all fileds until ">" character. Somebody knows how can I do this??

Problem building latest Courier-authlib on CentOS4

mysql secure installation and multi mysqld

If you adjust the my.cnf file to make separate instances of mysql..... How would you go through the mysql secure installation? Is is possible or must it all be done manually for each one? is it possible to make each one of those instances a replicate/slave of a different master (thus a backup mysql server in a way?) working on this now, but having issues getting it to work. (centos 6)

Ok, did some experiments. Here's the scoop. You will need a live USB key of CentOS 6 with a persistence layer (overlay) and the EPEL gdisk package installed to make this thing boot. On a system with Chameleon already installed, boot the CentOS 6 install media. Installing Chameleon without OSX is an adventure that I've not done, so a 'testing' OSX install (10.6) with the Chameleon bootloader installed was used; once Chameleon is in the EFI boot partition in theory you can blow away the HFS+ OSX filesystem, but I've not tried it. This involves partitioning the disk as GPT, and there are numerous howtos out there for many motherboards and laptops; the key is to get Chameleon in the MBR and the EFI boot partition properly created, set up with a protective MBR, and populated. Install to the free space on the system, using a /boot of about 500MB, swap space to taste, and other filesystems as you like. When the install prompts for bootloader installation location, you DO NOT want to install to the MBR (Chameleon is there); rather, install it to the /boot partition (on my test system this was /dev/sda3). Finish the installation. It won't yet be bootable. Now, boot your liveUSB stick. When you get your desktop, pull up a terminal and become root. At the root prompt, invoke gdisk just like you would fdisk, making sure to get the right disk device and partition. The command set for gdisk is virtually identical to fdisk. Use 'p' to list the partitions; you'll see your /boot as a partition type of 'EF00' as set by parted in the installer. You want to change that partition type to '0700' instead. The bootable partition must remain the small EFI boot partition of type EF00. You can name the partitions with the 'c' command; I encourage this. Use the 'w' to write out the GPT when done, and shut down. Remove the CentOS 6 liveUSB and reboot. Chameleon should automatically pick up the 'Linux' system in its bootsplash. Now, it may be possible to get parted to make the /boot partition to be type 0700 instead of EF00; didn't try that, since I know gdisk will do it correctly. As I was using a Dell Inspiron 640m, I used a Chameleon boot CD for a Dell Latitude D620 to good effect; you can find that on insanelymac.com. That particular Chameleon install includes a Dell logo and such, and may be some different from your particular Chameleon install. I have not tried this with a drive larger than 2TB; google for 'Chameleon bootloader EFI 2TB' to see the progress in this area. In theory this would allow a BIOS booting machine to boot directly on a 2TB+ drive using GPT without having EFI or variant in the BIOS. Hi, I'm looking for the ldirectord package but can't find it. Previously this was available as "heartbeat-ldirectord" and nowadays it is built as an independent package from "resource-agents" however neither seems to be available either in core centos 6 or epel. Where did it go? Regards, Dennis

OSS DSP sound card input on CentOS 6.2?

Hello everyone, I'm streaming audio on CentOS 5.8 with no problem, even on a cheap sound card using DarkIce as the input tool. For the input under CentOS5, I use: device = /dev/dsp # OSS DSP soundcard device for the audio input But under CentOS 6.2, there is no such device. I see /dev/snd, and it has: controlC0 hwC0D2 midiC0D1 pcmC0D0p pcmC0D2p pcmC1D0p seq controlC1 hwC1D0 midiC0D2 pcmC0D1c pcmC0D3p pcmC1D1p timer hwC0D0 midiC0D0 pcmC0D0c pcmC0D2c pcmC1D0c pcmC1D2c But nothing that looks OSS-ish to me. cpuspeed causing high load average?

On a new server's CentOS5 install, with nothing in the way of applications running yet, I noticed that the load average was sitting between 2 and 5 all the time, even though top told me CPU was 100% idle. Eventually I found that stopping the "cpuspeed" subsystem allowed the load average to drop down to near zero, as I would expect it to be. I have the default /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed with no customizations. Is the above behaviour expected? It seems wrong to me. Is cpuspeed broken? I did notice that with cpuspeed running, the CPUs were running at their minimum frequency of 1.6GHz, and after stopping the cpuspeed service they went up to their maximum speed of 2.8GHz. The system has a pair of E5660 Xeons, which Linux reports as 24 CPUs! Our backup mail server (which I have just re-configured) tries to contact the primary mail server, and fails. True bond howto for Centos 6

Hi all, Read many posts on the subject. Using 802.3ad. Few problems; Cannot ping some hosts on the network, they are all up. Cannot resolve via DNS which is one of the hosts that I cannot ping, internal nor external DNS hosts. Unplugging the NICS and plugging them back in will then not allow pining if the default d=gateway. When cold booting it somewhat works, some hosts are pingable while others are not. When restarting the network service via /etc/init.d/network, nothing is pingable. Excluding ConsoleKit in kickstart

Hi, I'm working on automating virtual machine installs using kickstart files and virt-install. The problem I have is that these kickstart installations install different packages than a minimal manual install. While I got rid of some of them I can't seem to prevent ConsoleKit from getting installed. I put "-ConsoleKit" in the packages section and later also added packages that require it but in the end it is still getting installed. Any ideas what I could do to stop it from being installed? Nothing in el5 depends on the qt4-4.2.x that ships with el5. It's an old, rotten, and completely pointless package. Nothing of any interest could be build with it for years now, probably never ever was it of any use to anyone. I replaced it with a rebuild of qt4-4.6.2-20 from el6. This gives me a common and useable base for both el5 and el6. That could be a sensible approach for a krita.el5 package, too. -Michael

BackupPC FAQ? Backups Apparently Working, but Web Interface Shows Nothing

BackuPC host is CentOS 6.2. Just one windows XP client. SMB backups appear to be working; there is data in the backup directory tree, including a subdir named for the client, in which I can manually view individual files that have been backed up. Now trying to use the web interface. Apache lets me log in, but the status screen shows nothing. Hosts screen says: This status was generated at 5/14 16:50. Pool file system was recently at 41% (5/14 16:43), today's max is 41% (5/14 01:00) and yesterday's max was 42%. Presumably, this means it sees the backup directory, since it accurately shows space available. Still, it says 0 hosts have been backed up. The SourceForge BackupPC Wiki says to check Selinux setup; it is disabled. What next? Thanks.

Persistent Kernel Parameters in GRUB

Greetings- I have a few custom kernel parameters being passed to a CentOS box via the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. However, if there is a kernel update, and grub.conf is regenerated, how do I ensure my custom parameters are: a. left in place on the older kernels b. added to the new kernel? I would think this should go in /etc/sysconfig/grub but I'm just not finding any documentation or examples of this in my searches. Could anyone offer a pointer? --Tim

CentOS 6, Raid 1, and LVM

I'm in the process of rebuilding one of my machines and I've been using Raid 1 with LVM on a CentOS 5 OS. I'm trying to get my ducks in a row to move to CentOS 6. However, I can't seem to locate and on the instructions/tutorials that show how to duplicate my Raid 1 LVM environment running CentOS 6. I saw the 'Partionable Raid 1 on CentOS 5 and 6', but it stopped before the LVM was introduced. Can I use those instructions, but add the LVM during the graphic installation? I would like to use dnsmasq to cache nameserver query results, and I have set dhcp to prepend the 127.0.0.1 name-server to the list of nameservers. dnsmasq would then automatically exclude the localhost as a name server and use all the others from the list provided by dhcp. But it was too nice to be true, because NetworkManager was there, ready to mess up anything I try to do, including the list of name servers that dhclient puts in /etc/resolv.conf. Is there really no way to convince that idiotic piece of software that it suffered too much brain damage in order for it to manage even a simple eth0 interface, and that dhclient can properly take care of the resolver configuration by itself ? Or do I have to turn it off entirely ? Is there a better way to have dhclient write the list of DNS servers, that dnsmasq could then use ? Thank you, Timothy Madden

Floating VIP...

Hi, right now I am using only one external server as a gateway for the internal servers. I would like to enable a fail-over on a second server. To implement the floating VIP, should I use heartbeat+pacemaker? Or is there something more "lightweight"? Basically, I just need server2 up the VIP when server1 is down, and server2 down the VIP when server1 is back up (or server 1 does not up the VIP seeing server2 has it already). Thx, JD

Geographic filtering for Sendmail on CentOS 5

I tried to google, but find no directions for configuring this. I would like to 1) limit greylisting only for messages that come from other countries 2) give higher spam level to these messages (preferably only for certain receiving email addresses) I already have installed geoip.x86_64 (1.4.6-1.el5.rf). How to proceed? Or should I move to CentOS 6 for this? - Jussi

problems with luci on CentOS 6.2

Hello, I have a 5 node cluster. virtsrv1n1 virtsrv2n2 virtsrv3n3 virtsrv4n4 virtsrv5n5 From Luci I am unable to manage virtsrv3n3 machine. Luci is unable to reboot it for example and if I select the node properties it shows me no status for Cluster Daemons for this specific node. openLDAP under CentOS-6

I've been hard hit by the lack of CentOS-6 documentation mentioned in another thread. The openLDAP setup has been changed completely between CentOS 5 and 6, and I haven't been able to find any reasonably coherent instructions explaining how to upgrade. If anyone knows of such a document I should be most grateful to learn of it. Actually I have openLDAP working (though unencrypted) with my CentOS-5 data after a series of more or less random steps. But I can't work out how to set the password for the web interface at <server>/phpLDAPadmin . Again, if anyone can tell me how to do this I shall be most thankful. Allow updates but not upgrades

Hi. At the moment it seems my machines just update to the latest current release . I install a 6.0 machine and run yum update , and next thing its 6.2 . I have a requirement where I need machines to only upgrade to even numbered sub releases eg: 6.0 , 6.2, 6.4 and only on my approval. But will allow updates within a given release. How can I achieve this ? If I sync the repositories for eg: 6.0 , 6.2, 6.4 separately in Spacewalk and only allow access to the ones I want to give access to, would that work ? Thanks G

xulrunner 1.9.2.26 available in repackaged form for use with legacy programs

I have re-packaged xulrunner 1.9.2.26 for CentOS 5 for use with older applications which can't be run with xulrunner 10.0.4. I created 'compatibity' RPMs that can be safely installed alongside xulrunner 10.0.4. I needed it to run the Evergreen 2.1 and 2.2 Staff Clients at our local library. The RPMs are available in the Deepwoods Software repo at the URL: ftp://ftp.deepsoft.com/pub/deepwoods-repo/. OT: PCI express questions???

We have several DELL servers run under CENTOS 5. I check server spec and found some servers expansion slot say PCIE and some say PCIE generation 2. My questions are: 1. does PCI express meaning PCIE 1.0??? 2. does PCIE generation 2 same like PCIE 2.0??? 3. what is speed on following: PCI X4: PCI X8: PCI generation 2 X4: PCI generation 2 X8: Thanks.

when is the o.s. considered to be at a certain minor version? Or, is it safe to apply only certain package updates from the next release version?

Two related questions about the minor release numbers (e.g. the 'x' in 5.x or 6.x) : 1) What constitutes the o.s. being at a particluar minor release? Typically, when you install you are getting a package set available from a specific minor release number. But what minor release is the o.s. at if I just update the centos-release package, and no other package? Typically, a 'yum update' is said to take your whole package set to the latest minor release. But what minor release is the o.s. if you just update certain packages (instead of taking all avaailable updates)? 2) Can I apply package updates made in a minor release greater than my current release without detriment to the integrity of the o.s.? E.g. Suppose all my packages are at versions delivered in v5.6. Suppose also, that I have a package xyz installed, and that an update to it was made available in v5.8. Can I upgrade xyz to the updated version from 5.8 without updating other packages (except for any dependencies xyz has) to the versions available in v5.8? How to prevent virtual machines running twice on the disk images?

I use KVM on two identical centos5 hosts. I can live migrate the virtual machines from one to the other and it works great. Once I do this, I can see VM definitions on both hosts using virt-manager or virsh list --all On one machine the VM is running, on the other it reports "shut off". The disk images are accessible to both host machines and I want to have only one running a the time (of course). If the VM locks up, I could by mistake think that the machine is not running and try to start it on the wrong host. My question is, how can I prevent host A from starting a "shut off" VM that actually has been migrated to host B? The VM could actually be running on any another host. It could also have been crashed. The most simple solution would be some sort of lock file placed next to the disk image location, so seen by all hosts. But perhaps there is another way of working with virt-manager that I am not aware of? Theo
