Hi all, Sorry for the off-topic, but I have not found how to do this. I have installed a centos6 server to act as a syslog receiver. I need to rewrite all messages that comes from one server. For example a part of the message is: "27April2012 10:33:44 172.1.2.2 data >". Sometimes between 27April2012 and 10:33:44 comes with one white space, sometimes with two, etc. I need to normalize this log to use only one white space between all fileds until ">" character. Somebody knows how can I do this??

Upgrading to CentOS6 is on my list, but I'm trying to get the latest Courier-MTA running at the moment. I downloaded the current courier tarballs and tried to build the rpms on a CentOS4 system. mysql secure installation and multi mysqld

If you adjust the my.cnf file to make separate instances of mysql..... How would you go through the mysql secure installation? Is is possible or must it all be done manually for each one? is it possible to make each one of those instances a replicate/slave of a different master (thus a backup mysql server in a way?) working on this now, but having issues getting it to work. (centos 6)

Ok, did some experiments. Here's the scoop. You will need a live USB key of CentOS 6 with a persistence layer (overlay) and the EPEL gdisk package installed to make this thing boot. On a system with Chameleon already installed, boot the CentOS 6 install media. Installing Chameleon without OSX is an adventure that I've not done, so a 'testing' OSX install (10.6) with the Chameleon bootloader installed was used; once Chameleon is in the EFI boot partition in theory you can blow away the HFS+ OSX filesystem, but I've not tried it. This involves partitioning the disk as GPT, and there are numerous howtos out there for many motherboards and laptops; the key is to get Chameleon in the MBR and the EFI boot partition properly created, set up with a protective MBR, and populated. Install to the free space on the system, using a /boot of about 500MB, swap space to taste, and other filesystems as you like. When the install prompts for bootloader installation location, you DO NOT want to install to the MBR (Chameleon is there); rather, install it to the /boot partition (on my test system this was /dev/sda3). Finish the installation. It won't yet be bootable. Now, boot your liveUSB stick. When you get your desktop, pull up a terminal and become root. At the root prompt, invoke gdisk just like you would fdisk, making sure to get the right disk device and partition. The command set for gdisk is virtually identical to fdisk. Use 'p' to list the partitions; you'll see your /boot as a partition type of 'EF00' as set by parted in the installer. You want to change that partition type to '0700' instead. The bootable partition must remain the small EFI boot partition of type EF00. You can name the partitions with the 'c' command; I encourage this. Use the 'w' to write out the GPT when done, and shut down. Remove the CentOS 6 liveUSB and reboot. Chameleon should automatically pick up the 'Linux' system in its bootsplash. Now, it may be possible to get parted to make the /boot partition to be type 0700 instead of EF00; didn't try that, since I know gdisk will do it correctly. As I was using a Dell Inspiron 640m, I used a Chameleon boot CD for a Dell Latitude D620 to good effect; you can find that on insanelymac.com. That particular Chameleon install includes a Dell logo and such, and may be some different from your particular Chameleon install. I have not tried this with a drive larger than 2TB; google for 'Chameleon bootloader EFI 2TB' to see the progress in this area. In theory this would allow a BIOS booting machine to boot directly on a 2TB+ drive using GPT without having EFI or variant in the BIOS. OSS DSP sound card input on CentOS 6.2?

Hello everyone, I'm streaming audio on CentOS 5.8 with no problem, even on a cheap sound card using DarkIce as the input tool. For the input under CentOS5, I use: device = /dev/dsp # OSS DSP soundcard device for the audio input But under CentOS 6.2, there is no such device. I see /dev/snd, and it has: controlC0 hwC0D2 midiC0D1 pcmC0D0p pcmC0D2p pcmC1D0p seq controlC1 hwC1D0 midiC0D2 pcmC0D1c pcmC0D3p pcmC1D1p timer hwC0D0 midiC0D0 pcmC0D0c pcmC0D2c pcmC1D0c pcmC1D2c But nothing that looks OSS-ish to me. cpuspeed causing high load average?

On a new server's CentOS5 install, with nothing in the way of applications running yet, I noticed that the load average was sitting between 2 and 5 all the time, even though top told me CPU was 100% idle. Eventually I found that stopping the "cpuspeed" subsystem allowed the load average to drop down to near zero, as I would expect it to be. I have the default /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed with no customizations. Is the above behaviour expected? It seems wrong to me. Is cpuspeed broken? I did notice that with cpuspeed running, the CPUs were running at their minimum frequency of 1.6GHz, and after stopping the cpuspeed service they went up to their maximum speed of 2.8GHz. The system has a pair of E5660 Xeons, which Linux reports as 24 CPUs! Our backup mail server (which I have just re-configured) tries to contact the primary mail server, and fails. So, the error probably is in my sendmail configuration. The error appeared as I today reconfigured the backup mail server to use a "dual sendmail" setup with amavis and greylisting. True bond howto for Centos 6

Hi all, Read many posts on the subject. Using 802.3ad. Few problems; Cannot ping some hosts on the network, they are all up. Cannot resolve via DNS which is one of the hosts that I cannot ping, internal nor external DNS hosts. Unplugging the NICS and plugging them back in will then not allow pining if the default d=gateway. When cold booting it somewhat works, some hosts are pingable while others are not. When restarting the network service via /etc/init.d/network, nothing is pingable. Excluding ConsoleKit in kickstart

Hi, I'm working on automating virtual machine installs using kickstart files and virt-install. The problem I have is that these kickstart installations install different packages than a minimal manual install. While I got rid of some of them I can't seem to prevent ConsoleKit from getting installed. I put "-ConsoleKit" in the packages section and later also added packages that require it but in the end it is still getting installed. Any ideas what I could do to stop it from being installed? Nothing in el5 depends on the qt4-4.2.x that ships with el5. It's an old, rotten, and completely pointless package. Nothing of any interest could be build with it for years now, probably never ever was it of any use to anyone. I replaced it with a rebuild of qt4-4.6.2-20 from el6. This gives me a common and useable base for both el5 and el6. That could be a sensible approach for a krita.el5 package, too. -Michael

BackupPC FAQ? Backups Apparently Working, but Web Interface Shows Nothing

BackuPC host is CentOS 6.2. Just one windows XP client. SMB backups appear to be working; there is data in the backup directory tree, including a subdir named for the client, in which I can manually view individual files that have been backed up. Now trying to use the web interface. Apache lets me log in, but the status screen shows nothing. Hosts screen says: This status was generated at 5/14 16:50. Pool file system was recently at 41% (5/14 16:43), today's max is 41% (5/14 01:00) and yesterday's max was 42%. Presumably, this means it sees the backup directory, since it accurately shows space available. Still, it says 0 hosts have been backed up. The SourceForge BackupPC Wiki says to check Selinux setup; it is disabled. What next? Thanks.

Persistent Kernel Parameters in GRUB

Greetings- I have a few custom kernel parameters being passed to a CentOS box via the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. However, if there is a kernel update, and grub.conf is regenerated, how do I ensure my custom parameters are: a. left in place on the older kernels b. added to the new kernel? I would think this should go in /etc/sysconfig/grub but I'm just not finding any documentation or examples of this in my searches. Could anyone offer a pointer? --Tim

CentOS 6, Raid 1, and LVM

I'm in the process of rebuilding one of my machines and I've been using Raid 1 with LVM on a CentOS 5 OS. I'm trying to get my ducks in a row to move to CentOS 6. However, I can't seem to locate and on the instructions/tutorials that show how to duplicate my Raid 1 LVM environment running CentOS 6. I saw the 'Partionable Raid 1 on CentOS 5 and 6', but it stopped before the LVM was introduced. Can I use those instructions, but add the LVM during the graphic installation? Is it true about some of the warning I've been reading about issues with this environment? TIA, Gene Poole + It's impossible for everything to be true all of the time. +

NetworkManager frustration...

I would like to use dnsmasq to cache nameserver query results, and I have set dhcp to prepend the 127.0.0.1 name-server to the list of nameservers. dnsmasq would then automatically exclude the localhost as a name server and use all the others from the list provided by dhcp. But it was too nice to be true, because NetworkManager was there, ready to mess up anything I try to do, including the list of name servers that dhclient puts in /etc/resolv.conf. Is there really no way to convince that idiotic piece of software that it suffered too much brain damage in order for it to manage even a simple eth0 interface, and that dhclient can properly take care of the resolver configuration by itself ? Or do I have to turn it off entirely ? Is there a better way to have dhclient write the list of DNS servers, that dnsmasq could then use ? Thank you, Timothy Madden

Floating VIP...

Hi, right now I am using only one external server as a gateway for the internal servers. I would like to enable a fail-over on a second server. To implement the floating VIP, should I use heartbeat+pacemaker? Or is there something more "lightweight"? Basically, I just need server2 up the VIP when server1 is down, and server2 down the VIP when server1 is back up (or server 1 does not up the VIP seeing server2 has it already). Thx, JD

Geographic filtering for Sendmail on CentOS 5

I tried to google, but find no directions for configuring this. I would like to 1) limit greylisting only for messages that come from other countries 2) give higher spam level to these messages (preferably only for certain receiving email addresses) I already have installed geoip.x86_64 (1.4.6-1.el5.rf). How to proceed? Or should I move to CentOS 6 for this? - Jussi

problems with luci on CentOS 6.2

Hello, I have a 5 node cluster. virtsrv1n1 virtsrv2n2 virtsrv3n3 virtsrv4n4 virtsrv5n5 From Luci I am unable to manage virtsrv3n3 machine. Luci is unable to reboot it for example and if I select the node properties it shows me no status for Cluster Daemons for this specific node. openLDAP under CentOS-6

I've been hard hit by the lack of CentOS-6 documentation mentioned in another thread. The openLDAP setup has been changed completely between CentOS 5 and 6, and I haven't been able to find any reasonably coherent instructions explaining how to upgrade. If anyone knows of such a document I should be most grateful to learn of it. Actually I have openLDAP working (though unencrypted) with my CentOS-5 data after a series of more or less random steps. But I can't work out how to set the password for the web interface at <server>/phpLDAPadmin . Again, if anyone can tell me how to do this I shall be most thankful. Allow updates but not upgrades

Hi. At the moment it seems my machines just update to the latest current release . I install a 6.0 machine and run yum update , and next thing its 6.2 . I have a requirement where I need machines to only upgrade to even numbered sub releases eg: 6.0 , 6.2, 6.4 and only on my approval. But will allow updates within a given release. How can I achieve this ? If I sync the repositories for eg: 6.0 , 6.2, 6.4 separately in Spacewalk and only allow access to the ones I want to give access to, would that work ? Thanks G

when is the o.s. considered to be at a certain minor version? Or, is it safe to apply only certain package updates from the next release version?

Two related questions about the minor release numbers (e.g. the 'x' in 5.x or 6.x) : 1) What constitutes the o.s. being at a particluar minor release? Typically, when you install you are getting a package set available from a specific minor release number. But what minor release is the o.s. at if I just update the centos-release package, and no other package? Typically, a 'yum update' is said to take your whole package set to the latest minor release. But what minor release is the o.s. if you just update certain packages (instead of taking all avaailable updates)? 2) Can I apply package updates made in a minor release greater than my current release without detriment to the integrity of the o.s.? E.g. Suppose all my packages are at versions delivered in v5.6. Suppose also, that I have a package xyz installed, and that an update to it was made available in v5.8. Can I upgrade xyz to the updated version from 5.8 without updating other packages (except for any dependencies xyz has) to the versions available in v5.8? How to prevent virtual machines running twice on the disk images?

I use KVM on two identical centos5 hosts. I can live migrate the virtual machines from one to the other and it works great. Once I do this, I can see VM definitions on both hosts using virt-manager or virsh list --all On one machine the VM is running, on the other it reports "shut off". The disk images are accessible to both host machines and I want to have only one running a the time (of course). If the VM locks up, I could by mistake think that the machine is not running and try to start it on the wrong host. My question is, how can I prevent host A from starting a "shut off" VM that actually has been migrated to host B? The VM could actually be running on any another host. It could also have been crashed. The most simple solution would be some sort of lock file placed next to the disk image location, so seen by all hosts. But perhaps there is another way of working with virt-manager that I am not aware of? Theo

Cyrus-imapd update from 2.2.12 to 2.3.16

We are trying to move our mail store from a host running cyrus-imapd 2.2.12 under CentOS-4 to one running 2.3.16 under CentOS-6. The current host is a 32 bit architecture. The new host is 64 bit. We have followed the update guide found at: http://www.cyrusimap.org/docs/cyrus-imapd/2.3.16/install-upgrade.php The steps we followed were: 1. Install cyrus-imapd et al on the new host. 2. Modify /etc/cyrus.conf and /etc/imapd.conf to suit our requirements. 3. On the old host dump the mailbox.db in flat format using /var/lib/cyrus-imapd/ctl_mboxlist -d > mboxlist.txt 4. Copy the mboxlist.txt file and the mail spool from the old to the new system 5. Run SELinux restorecon -fr on /var/spool/imap to set the correct contexts and ownership. 6. Load mailbox.db from mboxlist.txt using cat mboxlist.txt | /usr/lib/cyrus-imapd/ctl_mboxlist -u 7. Run /usr/lib/imapd-cyrus/reconstruct -rfg user 8. Run /usr/lib/imapd-cyrus/reconstruct -G user 9. Run /usr/lib/imapd-cyrus/quota -f 10. Start saslauthd and cyrus-imapd services. All the transferred mailboxes are seen and the imapd configuration data seems correct. The problem is that the quotas reported for each mailbox tree do not seem to aggregate under 2.3 as they did on 2.2. So, for example a user with an overall allocation of 500Mb reporting 70% utilization for the INBOX on the 2.2.13 version reports 3% on the 2.3.16 server even though the contents of the mailbox trees are identical. It seems that the new version calculates quota only for the INBOX itself, and not for all of the sub-directory contents. Is this a change in behaviour for 2.3 vice 2.2 or do I have a problem? Konqueror tree view in CentOS 6

Hello listmates, I have a machine that is running Centos 5.8. I am trying to install MediaWiki 1.19 on it and that requires PHP 5.3 which I got from the combination of the Remi and EPEL repositories. Logging file activity

On windows I use filemon, it tells me every file operation and its result. I have search high and low, but cannot seem to find an alternative. Disabling stock firewall and SELinux for ISPConfig

I have been reading a tutorial on configuring and securing a CentOS 6.2 machine: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-centos-6.2-x86_64-with-apache2-isp… This tutorial bases the configuration on an application called ISPConfig. I am not sure that I like the idea of disabling the stock firewall and SELinux as the tutorial suggests, even with all the troubles that SELinux has given me in the past. What do those wiser than myself think about this? For some background, I will be setting up a rather bland server for serving a few websites. Thy will all be served via Apache, coded in PHP. I am concerned about correctly configuring a safe firewall for the system. So any advice particular to that would be much appreciated. Thank you! Dotan Cohen

Is there a way of installing xulrunner-1.9 along side xulrunner-10.0? Qt 4.8.1. on CentOS 5

Hi, Has anyone here tried the latest Qt version - 4.8.1 - on a CentOS 5 system? I've tried, and also failed - most programs will crash during some very fundamental operation, like drawing windows or something. This only happens when GUI Style is set to "Desktop Settings (Default)" (when running GNOME) in the Qt Configuration, though, so it must have something to do with the Gtk style engine. I suspect it would also happen with "GTK+", but I can't actually switch to that setting, as the configurator itself will crash when I select it. Spam, fail2ban and centos

Been working on my anti-spam centos mailserver for a while now and thought I would share fail2ban's help. I installed fail2ban a few weeks back. It was tough to get it working properly but pretty much working now. Although it works fine for brute force, I thought I would run it pretty tough against spammers. I started with a regular mail server, my old one, that is horrendously pounded daily by spammers and has been for years. I installed centos 6 and used postfix to replace my 5.x and sendmail system. As I added some smtpd restrictions I noticed an immediate drop in spam getting through...til the next day when spam from new sources arrived. Then I would add more smtpd restrictions and the same thing happened. I get the feeling that they go for low hanging fruit and when they see that stop, they go a step higher. Eventually ran out of smtpd restrictions and still a lot getting through. I used spamassassin to tag mails, but not delete..I wanted to find out who it was and stop them, not delete them. Then I started adding rbl rejects. That too had the same effect..a day with little spam, then next day a whole new set would hit me. Then I added a ton of rbls like spamhaus, etc....Even apews. That really stopped what was getting through and my mail logs went from 30 MB a day to 5MB (this was for a one email address server, one that is seldom used at all). 5MB of rejects, rarely would one ever get through. I wanted to limit those log sizes, so with fail2ban I decided to start banning any ip that made more than 2 attempts to send mail of they were rejected by a rbl, bad helo, or non existent recipient. Bascially all the rejects that my smtpd restrictions were using. First day, much less attacks, went to less than 1MB log files. Then starting the second day and every day there after the attacks started.. Each day 1 or two IPs now send a concurrent blast to the site, just a connect but not trying to send anything..then that IP goes for sasl auth, but never sends a user/pass....then it sends an encrypted pass...then it is finally taken out by fail2ban. Also, the attacks of bad addresses have now greatly increased. I am now banning 1,000 IPs a day with fail2ban (I have it set for a 5 day ban to test it)....but each day 1,000 new ones go after it. I have logs going back 4 years (logwatch) and can definitely see that these newer ips were not used before. I think I made them mad....lol Working on adding some kind of regex to fail2ban to look for concurrent attacks. I find it rather interesting, after analyzing my spam, how it seems to fall into about 10 or 12 different formats and that is about it... I found it very interesting that as I really started rejecting that places like ovh.net suddenly cropped up pounding me. Vocus, constant contact, etc...really started going in overdrive once I had it set up. I am starting to see a real pattern to all this. I would love to see someone do a case study on spam attacks. Their system seems well honed to scale up with your defenses until they finally have to 'appear' on their real computers like the ovh.net servers, and many more hosts, and through legitimate (ha ha) spammers like vocus, constant contact, etc. Here is the logwatch from today for fail2ban and postfix if you want to see how much I get each day http://www.politicalgateway.com/postfix.txt http://www.politicalgateway.com/fail2ban.txt this is for a one email address mailserver, that never had other addresses used. It was a somewhat popular site for candidates for a few years, but has been closed down for about 3 years. Usually not one email gets through for days, spam that is. And those reports are after about 4 days of long term ip bans. My log file size is now about 1MB, down from 5MB thanks to fail2ban. Quite an experience. Going to work on consolidating all those banned ips and see if I can find a 'iptables drop' solution for most of them. Fail2ban really helps out in the number of times these bozos try to send a mail. Instead of 100 times, they get 2 off then banned. That has really helped the server out. Can't sue anyone for the can-spam act, but places like vocus.com and the like....thinking of suing them for harassment and DDoS attacks...maybe then they will stop sending me their legitimate spam.

webmin and DNS configuration on CentOS 6.2

Hello listmates, I have two seemingly identical (in this reglard, at least) machine - both of them are running CentOS 6.2 with bind (bind-chroot) installed. I used webmin to edit the DNS configuration. One one of them it seems to work fine, on the other I get messages akin to the following: Failed to create master zone : Failed to replace /var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf with /var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf.webmintmp.13214 : Device or resource busy >From what I can tell, the file /var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf.webmintmp.13214 never even gets created to begin with. Has anyone experienced that? Does anyone know what the issue is? Thanks. Boris.

best way to upgrade from default Python 2.4 to Python 2.6?

What is the best way to upgrade to Python 2.6 from the default Python 2.4. I'm running CentOS 5 --> Linux mybox.domain.com 2.6.18-238.9.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue Apr 12 18:10:13 EDT 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I've read these horror stories online and don't want to break yum.

eth1 - Centos 6.2 - changing names of network interfaces

Everyone, Can anyone refer me to a tutorial as to how to rename the network cards, ie I have one that ended up being system-eth3, that I want to be system-eth1? I am setting up a new CentOS 6.2 system that I plan to use as a gateway and e-mail server. The original machine had only one nic card, and to my surprise the vendor did not have a 1000/100/10 card that would fit in the pci-e slot. I ordered a pci-e network card, and while waiting for it to arrive I purchased a Sabrent usb 1000/100/10 to finish my development. I was able to get CentOS 6.2 to recognize the usb ethernet adapter which had been assigned system-eth1, but I could not get data to go through it (in or out). The pci-e network card came in, and after it was installed, and upon the next boot it was assigned system-eth2. I tried to delete the usb eth1 and reassign the pci-e to eth1, but have managed to really mess things up. I deleted references to eth1 and eth2 in : /etc/sysconfig/networking /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts hoping that the next boot would reassign the pci-e network card as eth1, but now the system will not even recognize the new card. Is there any way to reset the numbering sequences of network cards so that I can have the the desired names. I wish now I would have left it alone, and just changed references to eth1 to eth2 in my iptables firewall. Thanks much, Greg Ennis
