I have an old dell 2450 that was running kernel 2.6.18-308.1.1.el5 I then upgraded it via yum to 2.6.18-308.1.1.el5. Now when the server boots to the new kernel, 2.6.18-308.1.1.el5 it hangs on "starting iSCSI" and the weird thing is when I tried to switch back to the older 2.6.18-308.1.1.el5 kernel it works fine but the network script fails to start. I'm not really sure what I should do, if someone can give me an idea on what I need to do to fix the iSCSId issue on the new kernel or revert back to the old kernel and fix the network issue. The odd thing is both kernel load the e100 network driver but on the older kernel I can get the network script to start. I would appreciate some help. paul

Good morning, Dell has once again obsoleted out hardware and we're moving forward to the Optiplex 790 as a shipping platform with the integrated Intel graphics chip. We're using CentOS 5.6 32 and 64-bit with a 2.6.18 kernel. What are my options for supporting the newest Intel graphics chipsets? -b

But another question in my mind is what is the significance of BMC MAC address here? (How different is it from the MAC addresses of other conneted NIC cards and how OS uses it)? And why not BIOS shows all the NIC devices detected ? (because "ifconfig -a" shows eth0/eth1/eth2/eth3 for me with eth3 MAC is: 00:15:17:EB:AE:A5. CentOS 6.2 anaconda bug?

I have a kickstart file with the following partitioning directives: part /boot --fstype ext3 --onpart=sda1 part pv.100000 --onpart=sda2 --noformat volgroup vol0 pv.100000 --noformat logvol / --vgname=vol0 --name=lvol1 --useexisting --fstype=ext4 logvol /tmp --vgname=vol0 --name=lvol2 --useexisting --fstype=ext4 logvol swap --vgname=vol0 --name=lvol3 --useexisting logvol /data --vgname=vol0 --name=lvol4 --noformat The purpose is reinstalling a machine with a given partitioning scheme and preserve files on /data across the reinstall. Kickstarting a machine with these instructions, it comes up without the /data partition, it is not mounted and not in fstab. But the lvol exists and can be mounted manually, with all data preserved. /root/anaconda-ks.cfg shows the following: #part /boot --fstype=ext3 --onpart=sda1 #part pv.008002 --onpart=sda2 --noformat #volgroup vol0 --pesize=32768 --useexisting --noformat pv.008002 #logvol / --fstype=ext4 --name=lvol1 --vgname=vol0 --useexisting #logvol /tmp --fstype=ext4 --name=lvol2 --vgname=vol0 --useexisting #logvol swap --name=lvol3 --vgname=vol0 --useexisting #logvol --name=lvol4 --vgname=vol0 --useexisting --noformat I.e. the mount point was dropped. compiling openssh5.8src.rpm looking for Xlib.h

Hello Group, I created a VM with 5.7 Centos DVD-1. My task is to compile openssh5.8p2 (src.rpm downloaded from openssh site.) on the system. It gave some errors about some buildrequires rpm not found. I took care of them. Now it is complaining about > [root@akjain-centos5 SPECS]# rpmbuild -bb openssh.spec > error: Failed build dependencies: > /usr/include/X11/Xlib.h is needed by openssh-5.8p2-1.x86_64 > I have copied Xlib.h from another machine (running el5) into /usr/include/X11 directory. Dear All Greetings, i am admin for ISP two years now, relay emails for more than 300 companies (CentOS/Postfix). Relaying more than 10,000 messages every hours successfully. no one has ever compliant for non delivery. but i cannot relay to this domain. The servers responsible for accepting messages are rejecting. i have given the whole log for experts to monitor. it is something out of control, because it is not my problem. Installing CentOS 6.2 *TO* a USB drive, not installing from USB.

I'm trying to setup a very small system intended for doing monitoring/logging. It's done on an Intel Atoms in a small box and the idea was to simply run it off a pair of USB flash drives in software RAID 1. Now the problem is that while the 6.2 DVD installer could go through the entire install process, grub will load then just stop at the prompt. The system will work if I use a SATA hard disk so motherboard compatibility is not an issue. Attempting the various methods to re-install grub (via rescue mode) or using the grub prompt to setup the disk does not work either. grub just does not seem to be able to find the USB drives. e.g. commands like root (hd0,0) just says device not found. This is despite grub having just loaded from it and despite that grub-install in rescue mode does not report any error. Same problem even if I just go with one USB drive in a plain vanilla ext3 setup. It seems that some sites are saying that EL variants just don't seem to be adaptable to installing and running off USB drives. Is this really the case and that I should be looking at using another distribution or am I just missing some crucial steps in the process?

FSCK on mounted filesystem (LVM/DRBD)?

Hi All. I have two running servers (drbd primary, drbd secondary). When there is a problem with one of them we switch to the second one. Currently on the /dev/drbd0 (it has /xxx ext3 filesystem directly on it) we have some filesystem problems (after fsck -n). I would like to correct these errors but the filesystem should be unmounted first (I would like to avoid it if possible). Is there a way to make fsck -a on mounted filesystem for ext3? My setup is: ext3 filesystem (problems) ^ DRBD ^ LVS ^ RAID Any ideas? Best regards, Rafal.

I assigned my boot loader to be on /dev/md0 rather then the default of /dev/sda1 Does any one have insight to this? Thanks in advance. screen brightness changes depending on which application is run

Hi, I found my LCD screen brightness increase when I use firefox and other white background editors and screen brightness decrease when I use dark background applications, such as terminals with black background . The change in screen brightness depending on the applications has been annoying. My centos version is ver 5.7 64 bit. Has anyone seen a similar problem or have a solution for that? Thanks in advance. 6.2 x86_64 "mtrr_cleanup: can not find optimal value"

Hi, I have server that has been running 5.x - 5.8 for a few years without issue and decided to move it to a fresh install of 6.2. First thing I noticed is a good part of the log has these mtrr messages finally ending with "mtrr_cleanup: can not find optimal value" and "please specify mtrr_gran_size/mtrr_chunk_size". I have been searching around and reading the kernel docs but are bit lost on the impact. The system CPU is a q6600 so it supports mtrr. It has 8gb of RAM and a G33 intel chipset (maximum memory is 8gb), 256mb onboard Intel video. Problem exists with DVD 6.2 kernel and latest in yum update 2.6.32-220.7.1.el6.x86_64. If I disable the Bios "memory remap feature", mtrr appears to have found it settings. But it says total ram covered is 7415M, so I lose some memory since when enabled it shows 8183M but mtrr fails. A little concerned about putting this back into production with this but hope to get it resolved rather than reinstall 5.8. Will mtrr failing result in stability or performance loss? Is there any performance loss disabling memory remap in bios other than losing 600k? thx Is this happening because the chipset only supports 8gb of memory and therefore mtrr cannot remap memory above 8gb? URGENT -- pseudo network interface creating problem with dhcp-- centos 5.5

Group, My linux box, running with Centos-5.5, is showing up (??) a pseudo network interface for Eth0. On Switch where my Eth0 is connected, observed 2 MAC-Addresses. If a DHCP server present in LAN, the second pseudo interface is picking up a DHCP IP Address too. Furthermore you can ping both Eth0 ip and Psedo Eth0 IP from the switch. The intensity of the problem is more when port-security is configured on SW for that port. “ifconfig –a” is not showing that pseudo interface. >From dmesg output, no new things observed related while detecting the eth0 NIC during bootup. Only proof for this pseudo inerface’s mac address is SW showing it (on the SW port connected to my box eth0) in “show mac address-table” output Is there anything that I have to check to nail down the issue. CentOS 5 - problem with kernel/process: task blocked for more than 120 seconds.

Hi All. I have a server which hanged two times because we could not connect to the box, it was not responding. In /var/log/messages I saw: Apr 11 10:13:29 server kernel: INFO: task imap:5855 blocked for more than 120 seconds. Apr 11 10:13:29 server kernel: "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message. Hi, is there anyone using shellinabox[1] (Web based AJAX terminal emulator): I'm trying to run it on a Centos 6.2 x86_64 but I cannot past inserting username and I get "session closed". Actually I'm using SELINUX in Enforcing mode but nothing strange is logged in /var/log/audit/audit.log. Actually nothing strange is logged anywhere but I still get only "session closed" after inserting username and pressing enter key. I'm trying to escape a very strong firewall/proxy for the purpose of managing such a Centos box via SSH and, if you know alternatives to shellinabox, I'll be very glad to hear something from you. Removing LVM

I have a CentOS 5 machine in which I'm trying to remove lvm. I dd'ed the file system to another partition, then dd'ed it back overwriting the lvm partition. I then modified menu.lst and fstab and replaced the paths to point to the correct device. When the system boots it's still looking for lvm. I can restore the system back to where it was with lvm, but I'm not sure what step I'm missing to stop the system from looking for lvm. 6.2 How to change hostname for each individual IP

Good day, I was wondering if there was a way to change the hostname for each individual IP address allocated to a system. For example if only one NIC card is being used (single port) and the hostname of the machine is "example.example.org", this hostname is being displayed for all applications no matter what IP I set the application to BIND to. My server has multiple IP addresses setup as an ALIAS and ive tried setting up ptr's, A records, and even specifying the new hostname in /etc/hosts. No matter what I do when I connect to the application it read "example.example.org" which is the hostname of the machine rather then the hostname I want it to read on a particular IP. Is this possible to change?

totem-nautilus and totem - mp3 duration

I have both totem-nautilus and the assorted gstreamer-plugins installed for playing mp3 files through Totem. I note that Totem doesn't appear to know the duration of an mp3. For example, if I right-click on a wav or ogg file and click on the audio tab, one of the fields is Duration and it tells me how long that file will play. If I do the same with a mp3 file the duration field is always 0 seconds. When I play a mp3 file with Totem the progress bar across the bottom doesn't move and the elapsed time display at the bottom says "Streaming" while counting up the seconds. Hi, I hope someone could give me help with following problem on centos 5.8 kernel and nfs4. On server i have bind mounted directory shared to the client with following setup: mounted directory: /srv/nfs/imagetest on /exports/imagetest type none (rw,bind) /etc/exports file: /exports 10.0.4.0/24(ro,insecure,sync,wdelay,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash,fsid=0,crossmnt) /exports/imagetest 10.0.4.20(rw,insecure,sync,wdelay,no_subtree_check,nohide,no_root_squash) On client I have mounted it with following command: 10.0.4.2:/ on /media/nfs type nfs4 (rw,nodev,sync,proto=tcp,retry=10,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,hard,intr,addr=10.0.4.2) This works fine with kernel: 2.6.18-274.17.1.el5.centos.plusxen But with 2.6.18-308.1.1.el5.centos.plusxen I get the following error: -bash: cd: imagetest/: Not a directory when accessing the share. Need to split long lines in mail archives

CentOS-6.2 I am investigating how to split long lines present in a Mailman generated html archives. Mailman places the email bodies within <pre></pre> tags and some users have MUAs that send entire paragraphs as one long line. I have looked at fmt and fold but these assume a pipeline from stdout to a fixed filename, which presumably is best done at the time of the original file's creation. I am looking for a way to deal with multiple existing files in a batch fashion so that the reformatted file is written back out to the same file name oin the same location. I cannot seem to hit upon a way to get this to work using find, xargs and fmt (or fold). Nor can I seem to find an example of how this might be done using these utilities. What I would like to discover is the functional equivalent of this: find /path/to/archives/*.html -print | xargs -I {} fmt -s {} > {} This syntax does not work of course because the xargs file name substitution only occurs once in the initial argument list of the following command. vpostmaster and Centos 6

Read through several vpostmaster email threads via the centos mail list, I am about to go down the vpostmaster bunny hole. I need a spam filter for a very small site, my church, 20 or so mailboxes and just need something easy to setup and maintain. One of my inital thoughts when I was creating the centos 6 VM was what sort of disk space is required, nothing in the docs called anything out, they talked about memory which is not an issue for me and I gave 2Gb for the memory and threw a small disk out of it. Is anyone running it with Centos 6, it appears from the mailing list that it should work with centos 6 but wanted to see if anyone was using it. Also, if anyone has any tips/guides/tweaks that they can recommend/share that would be great, Thanks in advance.

Monitor disc write in preparation for move to Solid State Disc

I am planning on changing/upgrading one of my systems to Centos 6.x with a solid state system drive and conventional 'data' drives. Any suggestions for a good simple tool, or way to give ongoing monitoring of writes to files on what will become the system drive. The I can then move as much as possible of the changeable files to the data drives. Suggestions much appreciated. regards Brian

Hi all I have a problem in the configuration of tigervnc-server-use centos 6.1 and tigervnc-server version is that which lies in the repo I followed the following steps: - tigervnc-installed - added the user in the section /etc/sysconfig/vncservers - set a password using the vncpasswd - left by default the xstartup file created - restart vncserver service When I connect remotely to my host everything works just that regularly see a gnome desktop instead of one kde (like I would) I tried to change several times the xstartup to no avail. can someone tell me exactly which strings should I put to view my desktop with kde? One thing that irritates me is that I'll copy something from a site in ff and paste it into webmail (squirrel/ensign, if that matters); then, in the evening, when I want to forward it to one or more of my lists, using t-bird, I have to clean it up *all* the time: 2-3 characters replacing ",' and -. I can't seem to find anything in either the webmail options (which I have set to plain text), or kde (thinking of the buffer it's held in), to affect this. I'm googling, but haven't seen what the effect of changing the kernel line in /boot/grub/grub.conf from en_US.UTF-8 to, say, en_US, or maybe even, if that's an option, ASCII.... Anyone know? mark, almost ready to install and play with a friend from a techie mailing list's email tool, running on top of mutt....

Hello, now I have spent many hours to configure openswan for VPN connections without any success. My goal: VPN Server CentOS 6 with public IPv4 VPN Client (= road warrier) from private site with NAT router or from mobile cell with Linux, Windows 7, Mac, iPhone or Android Is there any how to in the net? When I read file:///usr/share/doc/openswan-doc-2.6.32/config.html then I belive, there is no solution. It is written, that I have to reconfigure the NAT router of the mobile provider or the hardware NAT router of the private dsl uplink. Both is impossible. Thank you for help in advance. rsyslog / rotation, best practices

centos6 in regards to /etc/logrotate.d/syslog the file is in charge of processing /var/log/cron /var/log/maillog /var/log/messages /var/log/secure /var/log/spooler If I wanted to make a specific setting just for maillog (since that file gets huge really quick) would I add 1- a new file /etc/logrotate.d/maillog with the parameters just like the other files 2- add parameters in the file it is already located in (/etc/log...d/syslog) 3- logrotate.conf where other settings for btmp and wtmp are located. Which is the 'best practice' or preferred solution to changing the defaults for the files in the logrotate.d/syslog file. Right now I have changed logrotate.conf to go off daily to keep the maillog from getting to huge. I do not know what the default is for size forcing the change, but when it got to 35MB logwatch was not properly accessing it and logrotate in debug mode was saying file too big must be config file. There seems to be no setting for file size to force rotation for the log files in the logrotate.d/syslog file. thanks bob

First, let me say that I don't know if you're getting paid for the work you do for CentOS, but the speed that you put out updates - they're out around or before I get the email from RH - is very much appreciated, and if we're ever at the same place, I'd like to buy you a drink. Now, a week or two ago, someone was posting here, having problems with NFS hanging under a heavy load, and IIRC, mentioned successfully testing with a newer RHEL kernel - was it 2.6.32-250 or so? - and I was wondering how soon that was in the pipeline, because I'd like to play with it. We don't have it hanging with the current and last couple 6.2 kernels, but reading from and writing to an NFS-mounted directory is six times slower than reading from that directory, and writing to the local disk; for that reason, we've stopped pushing the migration from 5.x to 6.2 on our home directory servers, and rolled several back to 5.x mark

CentOS Community, What commands can I use to check the disk health of the system when LVM2 is being used on top of a RAID 10 using a HARDWARE 3ware raid card. The OS sees a hardware raid usually as one big drive. Is there a way to check the disks individually to see if any are failing, or throwing hard or scsi transport errors?

Good morning With iptables in CentOS 5 and 6 Linux - how can you please prevent processes running as "root", "apache" or "nobody" from initiating outgoing connections? Good evening... I'm rebuilding much of the gnu toolchain for some development testing I'm working. GMP, MPC, MPFR, PPL, as well as many others. I need to be able to have both 32 and 64 bit versions of these libraries avilable on the system, in more or less the same path (/toolchain/lib, /toolchain/lib64). Generically speaking, is there an easy way to build both 32 and 64 bit versions a the same time??? Or, more specifically, what is the best way to get both versions built??? CentOS 6.2 on a Dell 1900 with Xeon 5130 CPU's. -b

dns cache rbl lists?

No idea where else to ask this and get a real qualified answer but here. Not exactly pure centos question....but... I am adding blacklists to my postfix smtpd settings. I have the inkling that after the first lookup for a domain or ip that my dns caches the result and I no longer bother the RBL or RHSBL list owners anymore in that instance. Is that correct? I hate to waste their resources if it is not. thanks, bob

3.2 kernel with C5? Or ndiswrapper?

I know, I know... don't use the non-standard kernels unless you have to... BUT: I have a D-Link N150 USB card. Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0846:9030 NetGear, Inc. If I try to configure wpa_supplicant then it never associates properly. So I'm not totally convinced ndiswrapper is working for me. So I figured... dammit; let's try a generic kernel. Not good, but... I compile 3.2.9, install the modules and then try an boot... and it fails to find my root disk and panics. I can see from the boot messages that the kernel is seeing them, but it's failing to mount and switchroot. (of course I can't get useful information 'cos you can't do anything useful after a panic!) Looking at the initrd, it seems to have all the right drivers and modules, and the init script _looks_ correct... but it's just not working. Has anyone else tried to get 3.2.9 to work with C5.8? Or has anyone any advice for getting ndiswrapper to work for me (or other ways of running the N150 card)? Thanks! -- rgds Stephen

virtio or IDE on SBS 2011 (or any domain controller)

CentOS 6.2, using latest KVM drivers for Windows guests. Using LVM for storage, software raid 10, RAW with write cache disabled in the virt manager. When using virtio drivers for disk drives Windows Server complains about write caching being enabled. I can't disable it either. Using IDE prevents this from being happening, however the performance sucks. All searches related to fixing the write cache issue results in it being a controller setting, bios setting or manufacturer flaw. Since this is all software raid, LVM and Red Hat's virtio drivers it doesn't apply (or at least is fixable by others methods). My concern is data integrity over performance, but I'd like to know what others are doing. My fallback plan is to use IDE for the OS and virtio for the Data drive, moving Exchange and the folder redirects to the data drive (or even a different server install attached to the domain), but I'd appreciate others experiences before I resign to dealing with this limitation.
