transition to ip6

I imagine some day in the near future there will be a switch to ipv6. I cannot imagine ever remembering the ip address then...crazy. My question, since i have never done ip6 stuff, is what does that mean on my webservers? Would I just need to replace my ip4 with ip6 in my eths, bonds, bridges, and configuration files...and copy out my iptables to ip6tables, and change the dns servers? all that does not sound to harsh. anything especially daunting to make that switch (save from someone having to do that on 100 computers really fast!!) -bob

NFS Hanging Under Heavy Load

Hello all, I'm currently experiencing an issue with an NFS server I've built (a Dell R710 with a Dell PERC H800/LSI 2108 and four external disk trays). It's a backup target for Solaris 10, CentOS 5.5 and CentOS 6.2 servers that mount it's data volume via NFS. It has two 10gig NICs set up in a layer2+3 bond for one network, and two more 10gig NICs set up in the same way in another network. The host has a 99T XFS filesystem for the backups. RPCNFSDCOUNT is set to 256. During backups from clients the system exhibits odd hangs that interfere with some of our sensitive system's backup windows. On the NFS server side we see the following in dmesg. Postfix problems with maximum messages size

CentOS-6.2 I am confused. I need to accept messages somewhat larger than the default 10M allowed by Postfix. However, changing the message_size_limit in /etc/postfix/main.cf is having no effect. Squirrelmail is configured to accept and transmit messages up to 24M and this identical configuration is working on a Sendmail installation. So the problem appears to me to be strictly at Postfix matter. # grep message_size_limit /etc/postfix/* /etc/postfix/main.cf:message_size_limit = 20480000 # postfix reload postfix/postfix-script: refreshing the Postfix mail system # postconf -n | grep size_limit message_size_limit = 20480000 smtp message generated to squirrelmail client Message not sent. I just updated one of our servers to 5.8, and rebooted. In the logs, I saw a bunch of Mar 21 16:29:02 <server> rpc.statd[9783]: recv_rply: can't decode RPC message! Googling, I found a thread about that at <http://nerdbynature.de/s9y/archives/2009/08.html>, which suggests that it's starting too early, possibly before portmap is running. Anyone else see this? Linux on touch screen device

I have poked around in google and have seen a number of youtube videos, but my question is whether anyone really has linux running on any kind of tablet or tablet PC device in such a way that the touch screen can be used productively and it won't take a month to get it running? Initially the two applications that are of most interest to me would be a good web browser (maybe chromium) and thunderbird. I would also like to have a decent on screen keyboard which could be used to ssh to servers in an emergency. I've seen instructions for booting linux on various devices, but many people doing this are using keyboards and not touchscreens. Do applications like thunderbird have to be modified in order to work well with a touch screen or is just getting a working driver for the touchpad sufficient? If anyone has any experience with this I would appreciate knowing what hardware your running on and what linux distro/desktop environment you use. I've been interested in devices like the ASUS EP121 which is a dual core I5, so it wouldn't be necessary to have an ARM distribution. Also the newest Asus transformer prime (arm) which I think is about 2 months away sounds interesting. Nataraj

Hello, Thanks to some nice people on here and other forums I have pretty much finalized my whole mail system on centos 6.x. With all the checks, greylisting, dev/null of any 8+ spam level SA, I still get a few mails. It seems like everytime I enable a new protectant, the mail stops spamming for a few hours...then the spammers decide I am worthy of using better methods against me..and more come. LOL. I am down to just 10-15 a day. Anything that gets through all that I set up now goes to a spammers list that I add to the access file of postfix. http://bobhoffman.com/spammers.html that is the link to my list. I am trying to sort them out into political, real estate, bulk spammers, etc. The worst part is the bulk emailers are not on any black list. It is very hard to find their mail MX until they actually send you one. Many will be blocked, then a new alternate of theirs comes through. I could not find a list of bulk commercial spammers so I thought I would start one. As I progress it will become more defined, but right now a big list with some categories after it. Hope it helps.

RAID-10 vs Nested (RAID-0 on 2x RAID-1s)

Greetings- I'm about to embark on a new installation of Centos 6 x64 on 4x SATA HDDs. The plan is to use RAID-10 as a nice combo between data security (RAID1) and speed (RAID0). However, I'm finding either a lack of raw information on the topic, or I'm having a mental issue preventing the osmosis of the implementation into my brain. Option #1: My understanding of RAID10 using 4 drives (now known as a,b,c,d) is: a+b - RAID1 (md0) c+d - RAID1 (md1) md0+md1 - RAID0 (md3) This is of course simplified as /boot needs to be on RAID1 (last I checked Grub couldn't boot from anything other than RAID1). Option #2: I've also found the kernel provides a direct method of RAID10 without the manual assignment of the arrays as noted above. I performed a test installation, selecting RAID10 as the type in the installer, and it "works" but I'm just not seeing the distinction between what disks/partitions are actually the mirror or stripe portion of the array. Dual Monitor setup on CentOS 6?

Hi. Is anyone here running CentOS 6 with dual monitors configured as a single X Screen? I'm trying such a setup on version 5 (again), using NVIDIA TwinView, and it works in many ways, but there are a number of problems that means it's not too usable - the most important one being that there appears to be no way to control which of the displays new applications/windows will appear on. I mean, I don't necessarily need to be able to configure this or anything, but I would at least expect programs to open on the monitor that displaying the menu item or icon or terminal or whatever used for startup, but often they end up on the other one. Hi all, I have strange problem with my persistent names applied to iscsi disks. mismatch in openssh latest rpm available at centos

Hello Group, The latest rpm in openssh is 5.8, however, the corresponding latest rpm available in centos 5.7 is only openssh-4.3p2-72.el5_6.3.x86_64.rpm and in 6.0 centos is openssh-5.3p1-20.el6.x86_64.rpm I have following questions. 1. I want to start from src.rpm and where can I get the src.rpm for openssh-5.3p1-20.el6.x86_64.rpm. 2. Can I install openssh-5.3p1-20.el6.x86_64.rpm SAFELY with 5.7 centos without causing any problems. 3. Which of these two rpms will be most compatible with latest openssh rpm version 5.8. Hey folks, I turned on process accounting and had a peek at the man page for dump-acct but I am still left wondering how best to make use of this info. We want to be able to produce some monthly stats on which labs are using how much of our clusters. I know our clustering software has the ability to do this but unfortuantely not everyone uses the cluster commands as much as I keep reminding them. Would be nice to be able to show that user X used Y% of the CPU in a given month. How to restrict reboot/poweroff from non-admins?

I just noticed that CentOS (6.2) by default allows any user to reboot/poweroff system without any admin rights, or without any further questions, if using commands 'reboot' or 'poweroff'. But 'shutdown' still requires admin rights. What is the preferred way to restrict any regular user from rebooting / powering off the system (by accident)? IMHO, sudo should be required for this purpose (at least in a system with shared remote access from multiple users, single-user laptops etc may be a different case) -- TiN

One disk speed problem [SOLVED], and a question on hdparm

I believe I've posted before about one of the speed issues we were having, of backups taking many, many hours that should *not* take that long. My manager and I finally nailed it down to the h/d itself. Identical boxes, and he tried a backup of one system which took under two hours, while the same regular one rand nearly six. I'd been googling on and off for weeks, and this morning, ran across something: partition alignment. A thread where someone who'd done some tests and found that was his problem. So, here's the answer: we have these Caviar Green 2tb drives (the thread I found had either a 1tb, or 1.5tb), (and no, we are *NOT* going to buy Caviar Green for servers ever again). The big thing is that they use 4k sectors, *not* 512 bytes. Following directions, I pulled it into fdisk, and then used a command I've not needed before: u. This changes units from cylinders (the default) to sectors. Having done that, p shows that it actually starts in sector 63. Again, following directions, I changed it to start in sector 64. Finished the partition, wrote it, made the filesystem, and tried it out. 177G transferred in 1h 47+m. So, anyone who's got new drives that use 4k sectors should probably follow this. This also probably explains parted's completely aggravating complaint that the partition's not aligned, but gives you no idea *why*, or how to align it - I pulled the drive into parted, and told it to print, and it did *not* complain the partition wasn't aligned. Next trick: hdparm. I want to disable, or at least shove way up, the spindown timeout on these drives, which, depending on the thread you read, is 6 or 8 seconds. hdparm should let me do that... but before I do, I'd like to know what it's set at. Does anyone know how to find that out? And no, the manpage is wrong, hdparm -B <no parm) /dev/sdx does *not* read it, it just complains it's missing the parm. mark

Need help configuring wireless NIC

Hi everyone! :-) Yesterday I managed to find a driver for my USB wireless dongle, and it is now correctly recognized by the kernel. However, I don't know how to configure it. The system-config-network opens up in text mode and is not very forthcoming (it lists ethernet, ISDN and modem as possibilities for configuring a new device). I don't know how to create an /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-whatever manually for my wireless card. NetworkManager doesn't see the device since the ifcfg* script doesn't exist. What am I supposed to do? (Google also didn't help...). The device is listed by lsusb as: # lsusb | grep 802 Bus 001 Device 005: ID 1286:1fab Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. 88W8338 [Libertas] 802.11g The libertas kernel module is loaded: # lsmod | grep liber libertas 105931 0 cfg80211 164625 1 libertas lib80211 4194 1 libertas How do I find out the name of the device, and how do I create the ifcfg script properly? Check out the redirection at the end of each command. 1>&2 redirects the standard out of your child command to the standard error which then appears in the parent shell. At the end the last & launches your command into a background shell and then moves on to launch the next command. The redirections don't care if the command ever terminates. The result is that both commands are launched and the parent shell terminates leaving the standard error attached to the terminal that the parent was launched in. Odd hang on a 5.6 system

Hi All, I've been trying to trace the cause of a hang on a 5.6 i386 system. After running for almost a year, it hung last week, when I plugged in a screen it was blank, machine was unresponsive to the keyboard, over the network ssh and other daemons didn't respond but the thing has two network cards and routing from one to the other was still working. So the kernel was up and I suspected a dying disk. But smartctl -a revealed nothing untoward. Didn't see anything significant in the log files at the time. Logging had stopped when the machine hung. The machine rebooted normally and has run for almost a week and hung again with the same symptoms. Again rebooted, nothing untoward in the logs and smartctl still OK. But shortly after I left site this was logged in /var/log/messages Mar 27 16:52:04 cjcsrv kernel: INFO: task hald-addon-stor:2179 blocked for more than 120 seconds. Hi, I need to get a spec file with all macro exanded, so i can extract info of some tags, that my be consitional based on macros, i know that some rpm utils need to make this to figure out dependencies and so on. I don't know if is posible to get a preprocesed spec file with actual Centos & rpm tools, if this is on librpm, i can make a simple tool to make this. Regards.

Dear all I have centos 6.0 in my system and i want to update packages, so i tried the yum commands for checking and installing updates, but my proxy is objecting and i got the following error Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, refresh-packagekit Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=6&arch=i386&repo=os error was 14: PYCURL ERROR 22 - "The requested URL returned error: 407" Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base i tried with the software update GUI in centos 6.0 but still the same proxy problem....can any one please suggest how to overcome this problem and install updates for packages. Hi all, I have two centos6.2 servers acting as a nfs servers (nfsv3 for now). Due to some security requeriments, I need to share some folders using nfsv4 (with kerberos auth), but I have a doubt. Is it possible to serve shared folters using nfsv3 and nfsv4 (with kerberos auth) at the same time in the same server with centos6?? Nfsv3 is used to serve storage for three ESXi servers (and these ones only supports nfsv3). How can I do it?? Thanks.

Hi guys. I have mail loop problem. I have master server (CentOS 5.x) for domain in question (lets call it *domainX.com* ). I used virtualmin to set it up for that and several other domains. It is Bind SOA for the domain and Postfix server. I will call this server *soa.domainX.com* Now, I have added internal CentOS 6.x server to the company owner of the domain. I have given it hostname *server.domainX.com* and created *user1* on it. It has Postfix server on it, without public IP, and has *soa.domainX.com* as relay server. What I need to learn is how to set up so mail for *root(a)server.domainX.com* and *user1(a)domainX.com* stay on the *server.domainX.com* and master Postfix on *soa.domainX.com* stops refusing mail for other domains with: "554 5.4.0 Error: too many hops (in reply to end of DATA command)" I am already searching the net, but would appreciate link to howto or hint what to look for, since I mostly find irrelevant hits. Hi Friends, I am trying to configure screensavers settings on Gnome and KDE running Centos 5.x 32-bit environment. I need to prepare a script which will be push by Puppet and this script should be able to change settings like idle_delay, set customized password-protected screen saver, enabling lock etc.. I have tried below commands for Gnome and somehow the settings are not taking place. The users screensavers setting remains the same. Gnome Settings: gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type int --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_delay 4 gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type boolean --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/lock_enabled true gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type boolean --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_activation_enabled true gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults --set --type list --list-type=string /apps/gnome-screensaver/themes [blank-only] On KDE I am not able to get what settings should be there for enabling idle_delay, activating the customized password protected screen saver etc.. I have a CentOS 6.2 Desktop-Version (my Laptop). I have install remmina via rpm and want now install a plugin (rpd). I should say that this does not occur after every power outage; I suspect, but have no real evidence for this, that if the power comes back too quickly then the machine gets confused because it is in the middle of closing down. If I am in Italy the solution is simple; I just press the power button on the machine until it stops and then switch it on again, and everything works fine. I guess that the proper solution is to get a UPS. PowerTrust (or Trust) UPS's are available at a reasonable price (€40-€50). But I have one question about this solution. What if the outage lasts longer than the "life" of the UPS, about 10 minutes? I'd actually like the UPS simply to halt the machine in the proper way after say 1 minute; but can this be arranged? (If the machine knew it had gone onto UPS, this could be arranged fairly simply.) There is one other possibility. There is a Billion modem/router between the ADSL input and the computer. This does not seem to have any problem with power outages. So if it were possible to send a message to the router which would cause the computer to be turned off and on again, that might offer an alternative solution. One problem with this is that the Italian ISP only offers a dynamic IP address. I run ddclient with dyndns on the server to translate this into a fixed domain-name. But this means that any action of this kind would have to be taken before the IP address changes. I think it usually stays the same for several days, but I guess this might not be true if there is an outage at the ISP's site, during a big electric storm. I had some trouble with centos 6 installed on ESXi 5. Vnc didn't work properly until i removed the file /etc/xdg/autostart/vmware-user.desktop. I found the solution in this thread on vmware forums: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/326868 The same solution applies to xrdp since it uses vnc. Maybe this helps someone find the solution faster.

Hello all, I am looking for the correct way to add postgrey to my system but whitelist everything except for com, org, and net domains. Most of my spam is from .info domains. There seems to be no way to only go after certain domains, instead postgrey wants to go after everything except what you whitelist. So my idea was to whitelist .com, .net, .org, .gov, and a few others while greylisting the rest. The syntax for the files want fqdn, email addresses, or domain names. But How do you just add a .TLD? postgrey_whitelist_clients ?? *.com *.net *.org ?? this sound right?

CentOS for ARM

Hi guys, I recently became aware that this is being worked on as of recently. A similar thing already exists, though. Those interested in an ARM port may also be interested in taking a look at RedSleeve Linux, which is an ARM port of the same upstream distribution as CentOS. You can look here for more info: http://www.redsleeve.org/about/ http://www.redsleeve.org/ In total 109 SRPMs had to be modified in order to get them to build and work on ARM. They are in SRPMS/changed directory on the RedSleeve mirror. (Note: About 5 of those 109 were changed in order to remove the upstream branding which isn't relevant to the CentOS effort as it is already taken care of. It is quite well known what those are.) I hope this is of interest to the CentOS ARM port efforts. Or, you could take RedSleeve for a spin, since that is already available. :) Gordan

build postfix rpm with mysql

hello list, I'm trying to build a postfix rpm that has mysql support included. your advice on backup procedure

Hello all, I am down to my last hurdle of my project, backups. I am thinking of three different ways to go and wanted to ask for input on what you think is the better choice. Not asking for 'how to' but more of 'what is best in your experience' The scenario... centos server acting as a virtual host. Virtual machines are webservers and dns servers. All on one machine, all running centos 6. Virtual machines are kvm, sitting in lvm storage. What I want to do.. auto backups of the virtual machines to be stored on the virtual host's extra drives for later download to my home computer. Many backup solutions and programs seem centered on a network of computers with file sharing. I do not have this and don't think I want to go that way on my host. My three thoughts, not sure which one to pursue... (involves certain folders, /home/ (which includes maildir), /var/www/, /mysqlhotcopys and bin files, and maybe a few more. I can rebuild the comp pretty quick and then restore, or maybe just do one big backup of each server, then work on the folders as a solution) 1- Amanda. I do not know much about it or how it would deal with mysql databases, but it look promising. I do not have a NFS in place on any of the installs. 2- rsnyc - some kind of rsync going from the host to each machine, putting it on the host's backup drives. Adding a mysql hotcopy of some kind on the VMs, along with bin files, saved to a special folder that will then be part of the rsync. Once a week full of both rsync and mysqlcopy, then incremental daily. 3- Use kpartx ? and access the lvm the VM is on to rsync internally on the host, ditto above with the mysql copy/bin setup. Number 3 seems like it is the securest way, but obviously not much info out there on it. Number 2 seems like the 'old way' and will require some real work to get it right number 1 looks good, but do not really know anything about it. Which way would you go, or do you have a different way you like better?

guys, for some reason this is just eluding me. I need to download a source rpm for postfix as I've done many times in the past. But when I go to the available packages section of the postfix site and click on my architecture this is what I see: http://ftp.wl0.org/official/2.9/RPMS-rhel5-x86_64/ Maybe I'm missing something obvious here?
