Ndiswrapper refuses to install?

Hi everyone! :-) I have a problem with making a wireless USB dongle work under CentOS 6. The dongle is known to not work natively under Linux and last time I used it (cca 3 years ago) I managed to get it working using ndiswrapper. This time I was hoping to make it work again in the same way. To GeraldClark and PjWelsh, I have centos 6 and used your guide to get it going with vnc. First of all thanks for putting that up, so many techs told me I did not have to install a desktop to make it work and they were so wrong. http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/VNC-Server Using centos 6 I found some differences and wanted to post them here to see if anything helps clear it all up. I acutally installed x windows system and 'desktop' groups since that is what worked with my ipmi card. I installed tigervnc-server as root, ran vncpasswd as root, got a password. started/stopped just like it said to, so far so good. opened port 5902 -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 5902 -j ACCEPT in /etc/sysconfig/vncservers I added root and had to take out "-localhost" or I could never connect via vncviewer, completely blocked unless both were taken out. I imagine there is some setting somehow in vncviewer but I cannot find it. There seems to be nothing in vncviewer allowing it. There is something in your post about the ssh, but it references only another vnc server. so, is the only way to get an ssh connection is to download a windows vncserver, and connect with that to the vncserver on my linux box? (box is on the internet, not local) anyway, this helpful how to really saves a lot of time, really debunked a lot of myths about not needing a desktop installed (which was really furstrating trying to make it work without one). Centos 6 is a bit different in that one file...and it would be great to know how to connect though ssh with a viewer. still, it freaking works!!

LSI 2008 SAS driver?

Can anyone tell me which versions of CentOS/kernel support the LSI 2008 SAS chipset, as used in the Supermicro X8DT6-F motherboard? It's billed as a "hardware RAID" controller. Is this real RAID or fake RAID? I will be having two hard drives in a mirrored configuration. I usually use MD software RAID1, mirroring at the partition level. Would this still be best with this chipset, or would hardware RAID1 mirroring be better? Anything else I should watch out for? I'm also interested in whether it's even worthwhile going for the SAS rather than just sticking to SATA drives with AHCI. Thanks in advance for any comments! Hi Guys Im hoping someone would be so kind to answer my question. Where I work we are currently reviewing and making use of Centos, because of its long end of life support. CentOS-6 updates until November 30, 2020 The question I would like to ask is. Say Centos 6 offers and makes use of PHP 5.3. Say as time goes on PHP themselves deprecate 5.3 and EOL is reached. Would Centos 6 continue to offer security and bug fixes support for PHP 5.3 till November 30, 2020? If someone could help me understand this, it would be appreciated. Kindest Regards Brent Clark

MySQL query profiling

Hi, I recently upgraded to the latest MySQL 5.0.95 package as part of the CentOS 5.8 upgrade. I use MySQL query profiling on a regular basis for performance testing. However, if I try to use any of the profiling functionality I get this error: ERROR 1289 (HY000): The 'SHOW PROFILE' feature is disabled; you need MySQL built with 'enable-profiling' to have it working Oddly enough, profiling is enabled in the MySQL package bundled with CentOS 6.2, and was enabled in the package before on CentOS 5 (5.0.77 I think) I'm assuming this is probably an upstream decision, but does anyone know of any way around this other than compiling my own RPM/using a different RPM from another repository? Query profiling is essential functionality in my opinion, so I'm surprised it hasn't been enabled in the package. Thanks, Andy

Hello everyone! What does following error mean, I am getting this in /var/log/messages repeatedly, this morning my server (IBM eServer x226) was unable to boot and when it booted its giving following errors. control panels, like or dislike?

When I first started using webservers I leased shared hosting. Then I moved to vps. Then to dedicated. In all that I was with various control panels. In almost all cases bugs in those control panels would cause all sorts of issues. (ensim, cpanel, plesk). The load on the server seemed greatly increased (especially with ensim). When I built my first server 4 years ago I decided to heck with control panels. I looked at what I was using the control panel for, mainly for adding users, protecting directories or adding a new website. Seriously, I found the original setup daunting as a step by step is not really available for a new admin. But I did it. Without a control panel. Now my new server went all virtual and still no control panel. I looked at them but just adding one seemed to install a gazillion programs, overtake my system, and seemed to prevent me from updating the servers until the panel was updated. And they seem buggy and insecure. I understand for webhosting it might seem practical to add them, but with the issues and bugs they present the techs on my vps/dedicated sure spent a lot of time on the phone with me. That is costly. Do you use control panels? Why? Like/dislike? For some family and friends who I host a site for I found the setup of an additional server quite easy. A simple one page explanation of adding/deleting ftp, mail, or shell users, protecting directories, etc seems to suffice. I feel control panels are not needed and detract from being a knowledgeable admin. I can see if you are very new to running a centos server it would be helpful, but in the end run it seems to keep people from learning how to manage things. From a tech view, paid by the hour, I imagine those guys and gals love control panel issues... more money for them to fix things. Interested in where anyone else sits on this issue. I read a lot of articles on them but cannot find a solution where I think they would be better to use, at least not yet. I am open-minded about it though...

CentOS-6, Postfix and Mailman

We have a bunch of lists hosted on a CentOS-4.9 server running sendmail and mailman that we are moving to a CentOS-6 vm running postfix and mailman. I am testing the setup and I am running into a problem no doubt caused by my own ignorance wrt postfix. Based on groking the web I discovered that the recommended way to configure postfix to work with mailman is a script called postfix-to-mailman.py. I installed and modified this script to suit our installation. The mm_cfg.py file was altered to handle the virtual domains of the mailing lists. Adding a new list via the web interface generates and successfully delivers via our mail hub the new list instructions to the owner's email. Similarly, adding a new user via the web interface generates and successfully delivers a welcome email. However, email to the test mailing list does not get processed by mailman. It appears that mail is routed correctly to the posfix server but that the delivery agent, presumably mailman, is not working or postfix is unable to connect to it. Does anyone here have experience getting postfix and mailman working together and, if so, how does one do it? Is postfix-to-mailman.py the proper way to do this or not? On and off, I'm seeing Mar 22 14:10:04 <server> arpwatch: short (want 42) The only thing like it I find in googling is an old debian bug, with the only solution I see, from <http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=155182>, is "It seems that "struct ether_header" was 2 bytes too long, and with attribute packed it works fine on my NSLU2." problems configuring cluster to lucci and virtual machines resource

I have Centos 6.1 and i'm configuring cluster with conga, lucci and ricci these services are installed and running without problem. I need this type configuration for a high availability of virtual machines which is run on kvm. Kerberos failed password not working

Hello, I have recently set up a system to test the relatively new ability of Kerberos to track failed password attempts and lock out users for a given period of time if they exceed a threshold. My system is Centos 6.2 running the krb5-server-1.9-22.el6_2.1.x86_64 RPM. I have created a testuser in the Kerberos domain, and applied the policy as shown below. If I then attempt to log on to the server via SSH or to get a ticket via kinit and purposefully munge my password multiple times, it does not lock me out. Nor does getprinc reflect the failed attempts. I can't find much documentation on this feature, there doesn't seem to be any configuration options in kdc.conf or elsewhere other than in the User Policy. Even there, the kadmin man page is out of date and doesn't include the password lockout duration flags to add_policy and the like. Any pointers? Updated mirrorlist for 4.9 in vault?

I have just tried to update to 4.9 a system that was installed from a 4.8 local repo. Because 4.9 has been moved to vault, as described by Johnny in http://www.linux-archive.org/centos/638644-centos4-rhel4-upstream-effective…, the mirrorlist file basically contains invalid information. http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=4.9&arch=i386&repo=os To avoid the faff of having to edit the CentOS-Base.repo file, is there any reason that the mirrorlist files couldn't be updated to point to the available mirrors of vault.centos.org? I have a CenOS vps on which I installed Mailman to handle mailing lists for my organization. I was first told about Mailman on this list. The problem is that Mailman keeps breaking. Right now, when I try to access the web interface I get an internal server error. Fixing it is running up fees from my consultant. Unless it can be made stable I will have to abandon it. Gnome desktop trouble

Hello, I have several CentOS 6.2 hosts (2.6.32-220.7.1.el6.x86_64) that lock up when attempting to use the Gnome desktop from the console. I can always log in, but then all I get is the blue root window, the round initial mouse pointer, and nothing else. The last process associated with the console is "xprop -root" which strace shows as hanging indefinitely. There are cases (sporadic, unpredictable) when I get further; the screen contains desktop icons, the menu at the top, and an arrow mouse pointer, but the mouse and keyboard don't work. I can reproduce this behavior frequently by setting the system run level to 3, logging into the console, and running "strace -f startx". One other bit of information: I build all the hosts with the same kickstart file, and most of the hosts work fine; only a handful are acting up. Has anyone seen this before and/or know how to troubleshoot it? Thanks, Jack

Does anyone here know which CentOS release added support for 8086:1521, some I350 class device? We cannot get it to work under 5.4/igb driver version 1.3.16-k2. There must have been some major updates since, 5.8 driver is 3.0.6-k2-2 and current is 3.3.6.

I can not disable the auto-negotiation (eth1) on my centos 6.2 via ethtool or /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 the eth1 is a private network on a cheap gigabit-switch (under controll from a serverhoster). sometime the ethernet-card lost the "speed" and "duplex" information and change it to "unknown". i can only fix this with a network-restart (or ifup/ifdown). now i will disable the autonegotiation - but i does not work. thanks sebastian

ABRT interpretation / guidance needed

Greetings - I have a Centos 6 box fully updated that intermittently sends me an "[abrt] full crash report" email. I am not familiar with these at all and in my limited google search have not found good information to interpret this information. The most recent (and the most frequent one) is listed below, also I have listed the lines from /var/log/messages that correspond to it. This box is an Dell Optiplex GX520 that I am temporarily using as a location to store some backup information while I put together a more permanant backup solution. The box is headless with Webmin installed to manage it. It continues running when these occur, and I have not noticed any detrimental effects. I am trying to understand the primary issue these messages are trying to tell me so that I can do a little more research and figure out what I need to do about it (if anything). Where Did All The Noise Go?

OK, I've got 2 machines running CentOS. One running CentOS x86_64 6.2 and the other running CentOS x86_64 5.8. At some upgrade point I've lost all sound using Firefox and Thunderbird with my Gnome desktop. When I bring up 'System', 'Preferences', 'Sound' and go to the hardware tab and test the speakers, they are working. Any ideas on how to get the sound back? nfs client issues since updating from 5.7 to 5.8 on the NFS server

Hi all, Wondering if any one has seen odd NFS client behavior with a 5.8 NFS server? While by Nix and OSX clients are fine, my Windows clients are acting up. I can no longer mount any NFS share from a 5.8 NFS server box on my Winblowz clients. I'll keep digging around but nothing has changed on the client end. Since my NFS server OS has changed, I'm assuming a client adjustment is needed. Also, does any one know of a way to max out verbosity on my NFS server? Things are showing (failed and successful client NFS mount attempts) in /var/log/messages but I've a feeling that something is missing. Thanks in advance, - aurf

testing a udp socket with netcat

i've this udp daemon which is waiting for an incoming udp datagram. now i want test this daemon for random garbage to test how it behaves. Odd thing with Realtek Ethernet card

Hi all, I swapped a Realtek 8139 100M Net Card for a Realtek 8169 Gig Net card in a Centos 5.6 system. After reconfiguring the network settings I find that on boot up the 8169 interface does not start. The startup script says something like "The 8169 is not available..." ifconfig -a shows a device with the right mac address called __tmpsomethingorother I can get it going if I remod the r8169 driver and load it again. Then ifup eth1 works. There's also a Marvell 88E8056 on the motherboard. /var/log/messages shows the 8169 as eth0 and the Marvell as eth1 but when the network is finally up they are the other way round. ifcfg-eth0 has the mac address of the Marvell in it and ifcfg-eth1 doesn't have a mac address in it. Should I wipe those scripts and start again? I've put a nasty bodge in rc.local for the moment to make the startup work. Fail2ban problem

If there is a serious power failure, eg during an electric storm, and the internet goes down then my CentOS-6.2 server seems to take an inordinate time, maybe forever, to get past fail2ban. It is as though there is an extremely long - maybe an hour - timeout if fail2ban cannot connect to the internet. (I usually stop the machine with the power-button, re-boot into a different OS (Fedora) and chkconfig off fail2ban.) CentOS 5 Testing repo

We were using the CentOS 5 testing repo on dev.centos.org to update our webservers' PHP to 5.2. However, we've just tried building a new machine lately and found that the repo seems to be empty. Is this a temporary fault, or has it gone away now that CentOS 6 is out? If it has gone away, where can I grab PHP 5.2 packages from? CentOS Server Backup Options

What do you guys recommend for backing up a small CentOS server in a business environment. It will have (3) 300gb drives in a raid 5 array but I don't anticipate more than about 25gb of data that needs to be backed up each night. I want a lot of backups with a rotation scheme that included daily, weekly, and monthly copies. I want the daily copies of the data kept until the next week, and the weekly copy being kept for four weeks, and the monthly copies being kept for a year. The vendor is recommending a RD1000 Removable Disk device. This looks like it has great specs. Each cartridge holds 160gb (non-compressed) and the drive costs about $420 but seems that with each removable cartridge costing $128, we may be limited to how many cartridges we could have, thus perhaps not retaining backup instances as long as I like. I asked about a HP DAT160 tape drive. Each tape holds 160gb (non-compressed) and the drive costs about $730, and each tape only costs about $24, so it would be economical to have lots of backup instances saved for a long period of time. I have been using tape and the backup rotation scheme mentioned above for over 20 years. The vendor is telling me they don't recommend tape drives anymore and all of their customers are using removable hard drive for local backups. Am I missing something? My instincts tell me the tape drive is the right solution for a system with a small amount of data, where the system is used only from 8am - 5pm (so backup speed is not critical) and where we want to save backup instances for a long time before overwriting them. Any input would be welcomed.

Kickstart network issues

Hello all - (Please forgive me if I sent this msg twice, first one didn't seem to go through) I searched through the archives and did not see anything about this (along with google), but if I missed something please don't hesitate to send me some links. Basically I have hit a problem that I cannot figure out at this point and seemed to have ran out of ideas via Google or the documentation. I am kickstarting (using cobbler) CentOS 6.2 installs over a private network (can reach the Internet). Part of the installations is to go grab various configuration files, rpm's, etc that are located both internal to the network (different subnet) and externally on the Internet somewhere. This problem seems to be intermittent since it works half of the time, but not the other half. Any of my kickstart scripts I have that use local commands (not wget'ing files) work just fine no problems. However when it comes to getting things from the network, it does not always get those files. Usually this errors out with a cannot resolve hostname error or no route to host. I have tried the following to overcome this: 1) During post-install, add a network start and sleep for 120 seconds to give it time to come up. 2) Made sure that the "network" commands in the kickstart included -activate 3) Tried making the downloads not depend on DNS which still does not work (no route to host). Are there any tricks to ensuring the network comes up during post-install for kickstart? By the way, after the kickstart is done and the VM boots up, there are no changes that need to be made to get the network up and running like normal... DNS, etc work fine immediately. If y'all remember the problem I posted a while back, with a 3TB drive for userspace loosing it on a server, and spitting DRDY errors, but which work on everything else. Well, enough research, and conversation, and I may have found the problem: it's a Caviar Green, meant for a desktop, and the controller in the server has issues, because it uses TLER: http://hardforum.com/archive/index.php/t-1285254.html http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=14603.0 In short, if it hits an error, it can take, in extreme cases, up to two min to recover; meanwhile, a RAID or HBA controller has hissy fits if it takes more than 7 or 15 seconds. I'm ready to test this out; the trouble is, either I d/l a DOS utility, or I find what, two years ago, was bleeding edge smartmontools; the one with 6.2, 5.39.1-5, does not allows smartctl -l scterc,70,70 /dev/sdb So, does anyone know a) what version might include that, and b) where I can find it? I have no problem building from a tarball, if I need to. mark

windbind and AD authentication - UPPER CASE usernames?

How to know if packet is dropped by kernel for udp checksum mismatch

Hi all, I have a netfilter_queue app which de-obfuscates a already obfuscated udp packets. de-obfuscation process ends successfully but somehow packet is not reaching to the udp daemon. i'm suspecting this is happening because of a udp checksum mismatch. so i'm wondering how can i get logs of packets which are dropped because of udp checksum mismatch? i've heard linux by default dropps a packet if it does not have correct checksum if checksum is present, this behavior can be modified by recompiling the kernel. using a custom kernel is not in our agenda. my platform : Linux <hostname> 2.6.32-220.7.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Mar 7 00:52:02 GMT 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

postfix and spam, I am impressed

I have had the same email address since 1997 (when microsoft stole bob.com from me thanks to network solutions...) In the early days I of course was free with my email and used it everwhere. Fast forward to 2012, some 15 years later. woof..the amount of spam sent to me has always just kept getting worse and worse. On my centos 5 server I just used sendmail with spamassassin and it killed a lot. Still, 100s, sometimes more made it through. Then thunderbird would weed out more, learned as it went... Still, had an inbox with a lot of junk. Now I have set up a centos 6 box using postfix. Today I decided to try to add smtpd restrictions. After a lot of reading and testing I 'seem' to be doing incredible. I wanted to share my current working postfix smtpd restrictions area so that others who are interested can start with it. I just added the helo and sender restrictions and have noticed no problems yet. There were many things some sites said to add, but they killed some very legitimate mail. So...yesterday a few hundred mails in my box as usual. Plus I set up procmail to not delete spam so I could test. That gave me hundreds more.... 30 minutes since putting this up I went from 1 every few seconds to 1 in 30 minutes. And that was tagged by spamassassin as spam. 1. Not sure if this setup is perfect, but it is working quite well. Hello, I am confused by a warning from mkswap : When making a swap on a LVM volume, I see the following warning : mkswap: /dev/vg_SDB1/swap_test6_64: warning: don't erase bootbits sectors on whole disk. Use -f to force. Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 1048572 KiB Is it safe to use mkswap -f in this case ? postfix spam question for the gurus

Hello, I have a question about postfix. I have a few webservers, each with their own mailing system. Obviously manually adding items can be quite tedious going from one to another to another. I am in the process of making a list of domains (commercial spammers) that bother me. My idea is to use the access file to reject them. My question is this... Can I make a text page on one of my html servers that lists all these bums and reference that file in the postfix smtpd restrictions (probably as regex or prce instead of hash)? This way I only have to make one big page of them. And I can add a 'you be blocked m.f. because of spamming me on the page so they can learn how to get unlisted. can this be done or do I need to make my own rbl list (obvously limited to just my sites).? I would think I could just reference a remote file as easily as a local file? -thanks bob

debugging RAM issues

Hey folks, I have 1 system ( Sunfire x2250 running 5.7 ) that is having issues with RAM, but I'm not sure how to debug it. And unfortunately it is not under support anymore. I started the job about 4 months ago and when I came aboard the guy who handed stuff over to me told me this issue was on his list of things he was unable to get to yet. He told me he'd seen errors in the past in the Sun ILOM message log, but unfortuantely he did not record exactly what the messages were. Fast forward a bit and I've had problems with this machine. Sometimes when I reboot it, it just won't come up. The console and everything just go completely dead no matter what I do. I unplug it for a while and try again, same thing. It seems to just randomly come back to life, and when it does I see something in the ILOM log like this : ID = f74 : 03/07/2012 : 19:17:42 : System Firmware Error : ACPI : No usable system memory So it seems to me that when it is having trouble, it is not seeing any RAM at all. And when it does come back up, Linux only sees half the RAM it is supposed to see. "lshw" sees all the RAM The only errors I see in the ILOM logs are above. I don't see anything in dmesg or /var/log/messages on the Linux side. Back about 3 months ago I took this system down and removed all the RAM, and stuck individual chips into it and booted it, testing each chip on its own. At that time every single one of them worked! But I'm about to try this again to see what happens. Back then I also ran memtest86 for some time and it seemed OK too. Other than that I'm a bit stumped on how to get to the bottom of this. Tips?
