windbind and AD authentication - UPPER CASE usernames?

We're looking at using windbind and AD for our user account details but have run into a small snag. All user accounts in AD are upper case but our linux accounts are lower-case. Is there a simple solution we've overlooked? We really don't want to have to hack this... qemu-kvm for Centos 5 x86

Hey gang, I have been trying my hardest to get KVM running on a 32-bit CentOS 5. I know "upstream doesn't support it", but from what I gather, it *is* possible. How to know if packet is dropped by kernel for udp checksum mismatch

Hi all, I have a netfilter_queue app which de-obfuscates a already obfuscated udp packets. de-obfuscation process ends successfully but somehow packet is not reaching to the udp daemon. i'm suspecting this is happening because of a udp checksum mismatch. so i'm wondering how can i get logs of packets which are dropped because of udp checksum mismatch? i've heard linux by default dropps a packet if it does not have correct checksum if checksum is present, this behavior can be modified by recompiling the kernel. using a custom kernel is not in our agenda. my platform : Linux <hostname> 2.6.32-220.7.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Mar 7 00:52:02 GMT 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have had the same email address since 1997 (when microsoft stole bob.com from me thanks to network solutions...) In the early days I of course was free with my email and used it everwhere. Fast forward to 2012, some 15 years later. woof..the amount of spam sent to me has always just kept getting worse and worse. On my centos 5 server I just used sendmail with spamassassin and it killed a lot. Still, 100s, sometimes more made it through. Then thunderbird would weed out more, learned as it went... Still, had an inbox with a lot of junk. Now I have set up a centos 6 box using postfix. Today I decided to try to add smtpd restrictions. After a lot of reading and testing I 'seem' to be doing incredible. I wanted to share my current working postfix smtpd restrictions area so that others who are interested can start with it. I just added the helo and sender restrictions and have noticed no problems yet. There were many things some sites said to add, but they killed some very legitimate mail. So...yesterday a few hundred mails in my box as usual. Plus I set up procmail to not delete spam so I could test. That gave me hundreds more.... 30 minutes since putting this up I went from 1 every few seconds to 1 in 30 minutes. And that was tagged by spamassassin as spam. 1. Not sure if this setup is perfect, but it is working quite well. Hello, I am confused by a warning from mkswap : When making a swap on a LVM volume, I see the following warning : mkswap: /dev/vg_SDB1/swap_test6_64: warning: don't erase bootbits sectors on whole disk. Use -f to force. Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 1048572 KiB Is it safe to use mkswap -f in this case ? postfix spam question for the gurus

Hello, I have a question about postfix. I have a few webservers, each with their own mailing system. Obviously manually adding items can be quite tedious going from one to another to another. I am in the process of making a list of domains (commercial spammers) that bother me. My idea is to use the access file to reject them. My question is this... Can I make a text page on one of my html servers that lists all these bums and reference that file in the postfix smtpd restrictions (probably as regex or prce instead of hash)? This way I only have to make one big page of them. And I can add a 'you be blocked m.f. because of spamming me on the page so they can learn how to get unlisted. can this be done or do I need to make my own rbl list (obvously limited to just my sites).? I would think I could just reference a remote file as easily as a local file? -thanks bob

debugging RAM issues

Hey folks, I have 1 system ( Sunfire x2250 running 5.7 ) that is having issues with RAM, but I'm not sure how to debug it. And unfortunately it is not under support anymore. I started the job about 4 months ago and when I came aboard the guy who handed stuff over to me told me this issue was on his list of things he was unable to get to yet. He told me he'd seen errors in the past in the Sun ILOM message log, but unfortuantely he did not record exactly what the messages were. Fast forward a bit and I've had problems with this machine. Sometimes when I reboot it, it just won't come up. The console and everything just go completely dead no matter what I do. I unplug it for a while and try again, same thing. It seems to just randomly come back to life, and when it does I see something in the ILOM log like this : ID = f74 : 03/07/2012 : 19:17:42 : System Firmware Error : ACPI : No usable system memory So it seems to me that when it is having trouble, it is not seeing any RAM at all. And when it does come back up, Linux only sees half the RAM it is supposed to see. "lshw" sees all the RAM The only errors I see in the ILOM logs are above. I don't see anything in dmesg or /var/log/messages on the Linux side. Back about 3 months ago I took this system down and removed all the RAM, and stuck individual chips into it and booted it, testing each chip on its own. At that time every single one of them worked! But I'm about to try this again to see what happens. Back then I also ran memtest86 for some time and it seemed OK too. Other than that I'm a bit stumped on how to get to the bottom of this. Tips? I have a new server with multiple nics running Centos 6.2 and I'd like to force all NFS traffic over one nic. We're using FreeNAS to dish out NFS shares and I have different IPs on my 2 nics but how can I get the server to mount the share over one particular nic? Or is there a better way to do it? Hi, I have seen this very same issue. We had the the option ListenAddress set to :: and this worked until now. We specifically had to add the option ListenAdress 0.0.0.0 to make it work again on ipv4. It must be something CentOS specific since I couldn't find any reference (in my 2 second google search) other than this issue reported on the centOS mailing list. Cheers, Maarten

perl-DBD-MySQL, libmysqlclient.16 and 5.7 (FInal)

Hello, I have server CentOS 5.7. It has mysql-community installed. I need to run perl-based tool (mysqlreport) and it requires perl-DBD-MySQL (not a surprise) When I am trying to install perl-DBD-MySQL via yum -- it says it requires libmysqlclient.*15 *and it conflicts with libmysqlclient.*16 *which was installed as a part of mysql-community. I tried to make symbolic link and force DBD to work with 16. But it failed with error. Looks like libmysqlclient provides it version or has different API (which is strange for me) The only one idea I have is to fetch libmysqlclient.15 from some packet and put it to my LD folder directly. But what has happened? Where is DBD for new version (16)? What is the best ("official") way to solve it? Thanks.

I makes a *real* difference. I tested it, on one 6.2 server, mounting a foo directory I created in the usual 3 levels deep, and another, /tmp/foo1, and doing my same unpack ran at 2/3rds the time. Not good - 6.5 min vs. 1+min for 5.7 & NFS3, but better. This alone suggests we need to go back to NFS 3 - it would be a Big Deal to relocate everyone's home directory. Doing a yum list \*nfs\* shows something called sblim-cmpi-nfsv3.x86_64. >From the info, I can't tell if I can just drop it in and run that, or if I'd have to yum remove nfs-utils & nfs-utils-lib. Cron marks mailto value as UNSAFE

CentOS-6.2 We moved a cron job from a CentOS-5.7 host to a CentOS-6.2 host. The MAILTO variable is set to support(a)harte-lyne.ca in both instances. On the CentOS-6 host instead of receiving the mail with the output we see this in /var/log/cron instead: Mar 12 14:49:01 inet09 CROND[6639]: (cron theheart) UNSAFE (support(a)harte-lyne.ca ) The CentOS-5 host uses Sendmail as the MTA, the CentOS-6 uses Postfix. We can send mail to support(a)harte-lyne.ca from the command line on both hosts. yum list installed - 3rd column

On most of the CentOS 5 machines I manage, if I run "yum list installed" the third column just says "installed" for all packages. But on one machine, some lines show instead a repo name preceded by an @ sign. Apparently the repo from which the package was installed, which would be immensely useful. Two questions: 1. Can I have that feature on the other CentOS 5 machines too? The machine in question has yum version 3.2.27-12.el5_from_el6 while all others have version 3.2.22-39.el5.centos. Where did that "el5_from_el6" version come from? The "yum list" entry for yum itself does unfortunately not show a repo name. 2. Can anything be done about the lines still saying only "installed"? Upgrade to 5.8 broke sshd on IPv4

I have a virtual machine on linode.com that runs dual stack IPv4 and IPv6. On Sunday I upgraded to Centos 5.8 and now I cannot connect with ssh on IPv4. I get a 'connection refused' because there is no listener on the ssh port for IPv4. It appears to work just fine for IPv6, but I cannot access remotely when I am on an IPv4 only network. It appears that only sshd is affected. All other services seem to work on both v4 and v6. I have it listening on a non-standard port other than 22. I am going to try and have it listen on the standard port to see if that works. Anyone else seen this? Any recommendations on tracking this down? Thanks, Mike

6.2 kernel issues

A couple weeks ago, after we moved a user's home directory from a 5.7 box to 6.2, he came to complain about slowness. Unpack file from NFS-mounted directory to local disk, like /tmp, everything's normal. cd to the NFS-mounted directory, and unpack it there, and it was six to seven times slower. We repeated this a number of times, on a number of machines. At first, we thought it was an NFSv4 issue, and I filed a bug with RedHat about it. Then we did more testing; it seems to occur with 6.2; it's going to happen if that's got ext4. However, my manager saw something else, just today: he noticed one of our nightly backup servers was taking much, much longer to complete the rsync and delete. Then he saw that I'd updated that backup server to 6.2, and after the backups started running again (probably missing modules), they were taking a lot longer... about 6-7 times longer. As in going from between .5 and 1 hr, to 5.5 to 9 hours. Anyone else seeing this behavior? mark

hfs with extended attribute support

Hi all, I´ve got a HFS+(not journaled) volume connected to my centos6.2 test server, i installed the kmod-hfs(plus) packages and read/write works all fine. but since i´m going to use this for serving mac home folders via netatalk i would like to mount it with support for Extended Attributes and acl´s. so i add user_xattr and acl to my fstab options but then it fails to mount. checking the error in dmesg just gives me ¨hfs: unable to parse mount options¨. does anyone know what´s going on and what i should do to make this work? regards, Wessel

Upgrade Question

We've got about 200 existing servers running CentOS/RHEL 5.6 and all new servers are being provisioned using CentOS/RHEL 6.1. So that everything is consistent we need to upgrade the servers running CentOS/RHEL 5.6. I've searched the CentOS wiki, the Red Hat site, and the internet looking for something official on upgrading/migrating from CentOS/RHEL 5.x to CentOS/RHEL 6.x. init/upstart issue? ypbind and autofs

One problem I have with custom CentOS 6 installation is that NIS auto.* maps are not available. According to boot.log, ypbind starts before autofs, but when I login to the machine, the maps are not available until I issue a service autofs restart. Any pointers on what to check?

Samba Print Share Problem

I had my samba printer shares working after many hours of struggling with the samba.conf file. I was happy. Now the printer shares have quit working. I checked the yum log to see if anything had been changed. Nothing applicable seems to have been changed. One difference I ran into with samba authentication is in cent 5 /etc/pam.d/system-auth-ac is the file to change but in cent 6 its /etc/pam.d/password-auth-ac. I found that changes I made only to system-auth-ac in 5 had to be made to both system-auth-ac and password-auth-ac in 6. This was to have authentication work for things like ssh and sudo in centos 6. Interface starts when it shouldn't

In CentOS 5.7 and earlier versions, an alias interface is defined via ifcfg-<interface>:foo which contains "ONBOOT=no". The ONBOOT setting appears to be ignored, and the interface always starts when the system boots or if networking is restarted. This is a serious bug that seems to date back many years (I found references in 2005). Anyone know why it hasn't been fixed, or if there is indeed a fix? File permissions

Hello, I need to know if there is something I am missing about file permission as I believe I am seeing some strange stuff on my system. I have a directory as follows: drwxrwxrwx 7 root root 4096 Mar 10 13:35 temp In this directory I have a file: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 137 Oct 30 02:16 208-109-248-33test As a normal user should I be able to rename this file? I believe that only root should be able to modify this file but as a normal user I am able to rename it without elevated privileges as so: temp $ mv 208-109-248-33test 208-109-248-33-mv [Sat Mar 10 13:41:05] /temp temp $ lt 208* -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 137 Oct 30 02:16 208-109-248-33-mv How is this possible? Hi all, I am trying to install a centos 6.2 container under centos 6.2 host using libvirt and virt.-manager. Fetchmail warning

I fetchmail on my CentOS-6.2 from 4 servers. One always gives the warning ----------------------------- [tim@grover cron.d]$ fetchmail -a go.tcd.ie fetchmail: Error exchanging credentials 6 messages for tmurphy at go.tcd.ie. reading message tmurphy@go.tcd.ie:1 of 6 (2978 header octets) (2639 body octets) flushed ... ----------------------------- The messages seem to come over OK, so it seems the warning doesn't matter. Or does it? I don't get the warning from other IMAP servers. But I was wondering if my setup in /etc/pki/tls/certs/ is correct. I have 3 .crt files: ca-bundle.crt from CentOS installation (actually from ca-certificates*.rpm), gayleard.crt , the certificate I got from CAcert.org cacert.crt , the Class 3 root certificate from CAcert.org . I'm wondering if I am supposed to append the cacert.crt to ca-bundle.crt , and if failure to do that could be the cause of the warning? Alternatively, should I use the Class 1 root certificate from CAcert? (I didn't because CAcert said this was for Windows.)
