Shrew Soft VPN Client for CentOS 6

Hi All - Where I work uses the Shrew Soft VPN client to access remote resources. I have found pre-built rpms for EL5, various versions of Fedora, and appropriate packages for non-rpm based distros but no rpm for EL6. I have downloaded the source from Shrew Soft and built "my own" which built and installed with no errors but then didn't work. I'm finally taking the lack of pre-built rpms for EL6 as a clue that there is some sort of inherent problem getting this VPN client working under EL6. Is there a problem with Shrew Soft and EL6? If so, are there any work-arounds? Background: I also have the Shrew Soft VPN client (rpm installed) for FC16 running on my FC16 box on the same network as my EL6 box so I have a known working configuration and know that there are no firewall issues. This same configuration and user connects under EL6 (confirmed on the VPN server) but is unusable (e.g., I can't ping known systems). Thanks, Dave

CentOS-5.7 rpmdevtools-6.8-1 Following installation of rpmdevtools when I run rpmdev-setuptree as root, then root has a directory rpmbuild created in its home directory. Hi all, I wanted to schedule some rsync backups and found that CentOS is by default using anacron. I'm mostly used with the historical cron, but let's follow the progress :-) - I made a shell script in /etc/cron.daily/dobackup - I made it 755, root.root. - In /etc/anacrontab, START_HOURS_RANGE=21-23 (I kept the other lines unchanged) - When I manually run /etc/cron.daily/dobackup, it runs quietly (no errors) Where should I check if the task scheduler is setup correctly (logs)? Must I reload a service (BTW, is it "crond" yet?) after editing /etc/anacrontab? How to tell that it may launch between 21:00 and 5:00? - START_HOURS_RANGE=21-05? - START_HOURS_RANGE=21-23,00-05? - ... -- RMA.

Video corruption bug in stellarium

Just installed stellarium-0.10.2-1.el6.rf(i686) last night with the Add/Remove Software tool. I'm getting video corruption and this message in the terminal: StelAppGraphicsScene: drawBackground needs a QGLWidget to be set as viewport on the graphics view A bit of Google work turned up this on the Ubuntu forum: "The new version of Stellarium 0.10.3 resolves my display problems. It's not yet available in the standard repos but is in Scott Howard's PPA (https://launchpad.net/~showard314/+archive/ppa)" "Latest update of LL (official repositories) brought 10.3 of Stellarium and the problem is finally gone :D" "Yup 0.10.3 in the repos, but there's a newer version 0.10.4 which is to be made available by the developer which resolves some bugs." I'm not sure which CentOS repository the stellarium rpm is in but I do know that it's out of date. Who's cage should I rattle to get the repo up to speed? Data consumption (external connections only)

There's a whole herd of ways to count and track the amount of data that goes through a given network port. However, I'm looking for a user-friendly (and pretty, if possible) monitor or counter program with the following features: 1. Grand total amount of data in and out since last counter reset. 2. Resettable counters both manual (reset it when you want to) or timed (reset this thing monthly or weekly, etc.) 3. Breakdown of external and internal traffic volume, by gateway if possible. Basically, I'm looking for a report with fields or a graph similar to this Total data transferred since the last reset: Total data sent: Total data received: Total data sent through external gateway 192.168.0.1: Total data received through external gateway 192.168.0.1: And so on if the computer has sent data through other gateways if there are several on a network. I've found all kinds of counters but none that seem to break out internal traffic from the external traffic by gateway. Audio weirdness on CentOS 6.2 with flash?

Hi List, I have an ASUS G73S laptop with our favorite OS installed and all up-to-date. Sound has always "just worked" When I use the Preferences>Sound app I can setup the hardware, input, output and was overall very impressed. One can check each speaker and the laptop has a front left and right and also has a bass speaker which seems to be connected to the left rear. The various players seem to work fine e.g mplayer, JuK, VLC media player. Recently I wanted to play a movie off the internet and so out came Firefox. Imagine my surprise as I hear only the background music from the rear channel - the front left and right appear to have disappeared. When I plug in some headphones, it seems that the phones only pick up right rear and left rear - front left and right are gone (laptop speakers are muted due to headphones being plugged in) So one cannot listen to audio from internet via flash player........ I have the high definition digital audio disabled as I understand this is for the HDMI audio system which I have not played with. e2fsprogs 1.42 EXT4 > 16TB RAID

Hi All, I was thinking of using ext4 on a new raid system of 20TB. I had read the article (halfway done the page) titled "Linux File System Fsck Testing -- The Results Are In" https://www.ultimateeditionoz.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=26180 They used CentOS 5.7 (2.6.18-274 kernel) and they state "The stock configuration was used throughput the testing except for one component. The e2fsprogs package was upgraded to version 1.42, enabling ext4 file systems larger than 16TB to be created." I have looked for an "el6" version of "e2fsprogs 1.42" with no joy. Any ideas anyone? Pam problems

I'm having problems with what I think is PAM. Seems that ever since Centos 5, proftpd has had problems using pam, and with Centos 6.2 64 bit, I had to quit using it altogether with proftpd. Now I'm trying to set up SMTP AUTH using PAM as the pwcheck parm to saslauthd, and I can't setup new email accounts on my port submission (587) to work at all. We use this port of sendmail so outside users can send through our own email server. The crazy thing is that users that were setup previously before my migration from an older Centos 3 box to the new box can still use the port fine on the new server. But I can't get a new account to work. I'm not seeing any errors anywhere, but when trying to configure an account manually in Thunderbird, it fails whenever I use port 587. I've got a similar host on using old Centos 3 that still works fine and I'm using it as a model along with the settings on the original Centos 3 host that was replaced for most of my parameters. Anyone had any experience with sendmail and this sort of thing on Centos 6.2? I've stared at this thing for days and tried about everything I can think of. The yum says pam is up to date. I have at the least the same pam packages, if not more, on the new server as the old ones. Any help would be appreciated. steve campbell

Really bad KVM disk performance

Hi Gang, I recently rented a server at a datacenter with Centos 5.7 X64, Q9550 Processor, 8GB Ram, and dual 250GB SATA HDs (with 16mb cache). They had loaded it with KVM, and installed a 30-day trial of Virtualizor as the front-end for KVM. I was so impressed with how fasts the guests ran that I want to build a few of these machines for myself. I just installed one: same Q9550 processor, 4GB ram, and dual 250GB SATA HDs (with 32mb cache). I installed Centos 6.2 X64, and installed Webmin's Cloudmin as the front-end. Immediately when I was installing stuff, I could tell this new system I just built was not nearly as fast as the first one. I ran some CPU and disk benchmarking programs, and saw that while the CPU stuff tested similarly, the disk thruput was much different... Down-right poor in one of the guests! On both systems, /dev/md2 is a LVM reserved exclusively for KVM guests. So each guest is running in its own logical volume, in software raid. Thinking there may be something wrong with the HDs, I ran Bonnie ( http://www.coker.com.au/bonnie++/ ) and compared both host machines. They tested fairly similar (within 10%). Yet comparing their guests is like night and day. On a side note, I'm not thrilled with the Virtualizor's tech support, but the product seems easy to use, once it actually works. Cloudmin seems to be buggy, and not let you do things like change cd images on the fly, access the console before the machine fully boots (!)... Any suggestions on other, preferably open-source options? I'm a definite newbie to this virtualization stuff. Bob

Good Evening, I have a problem with CentOS 6.2. On December 2011 I installed CentOS 6.1 on a HP ProLiant DL 165 G7 server. Recentely I upgraded to CentOS 6.2 but at reboot the system didn't startup. So I removed new kernel kernel-2.6.32-220.4.2.el6 and CentOS was again able to startup with original kernel-2.6.32-71.el6.x86_64. ViSpan

I was looking for the old Vispan stuff, and it seems to have disappeared from the web. Now I realize it was old, but it did provide some details that I liked on my old servers. I've got mailscanner-mrtg running, but that only provides a view of what mailscanner sees. Does anyone know of a good replacement for vispan that might give complete stats on what the mail server is doing instead of just what MailScanner is doing? thanks steve campbell

Ways To Practice Breaking My System?

Hi All I've been looking into some ways to break a CentOS system so I can perform some simulated disaster recovery and get some hands-on practice with rescue mode and other system recovery tools. I'm thinking to start off with things like corrupting the password file with random characters, breaking grub.conf. I've been doing some research on the net, but would welcome any input from list members. Does anybody have any creative suggestions for ways to break the CentOS boot process? CentOS 6.2 install problem squid winbind

In the install process, I checked squid and winbind. Squid access to winbind fails because squid was not added to the wbpriv group. I suspect that winbind is being installed after squid. I manually added squid to wbpriv in group and gshadow to allow access. Heads up on major Firefox update incoming

As a heads up since this might have a large effect on people.... The upstream vendor has rebased form firefox 3.6 onto firefox 10... This effects both centos5 and centos6. I'm not sure reading this whether this is the extended update support version of if they intend to follow Mozilla's new release process....guess we'll find out when firefox 11 gets released... Hi all, I use yum-cron with my new CentOS 6-installs and rather like it. So much in fact, that I tried getting it to work in the older CentOS 5-installs I also have scattered at the department. CentOS-6.2 I created a new VirtIO disk for one of my virtual machines. Previous experience has taught me that I need to partition it before attempting to add the new storage to the physical volume set of the intended guest. Up to now I have simply accepted the defaults given by fdisk after telling it that I want a new partition. The defaults always exclude the first 2048 sectors. firefox and IronPort

A couple of weeks ago, I got an autogenerated email from the mail folks here, telling me they'd quarantined what they thought was spam. The last time I got one of these was a month or month and a half ago, and I had no problem. This time, however, I get a 500 error. When I pulled up firefox's error console, and clicked on the link, I got <servername elided>: server does not support RFC 5746, see CVE-2009-3555 I'm told they're running Cisco's IronPort. It appears the patch came out a year and a half or so ago. However, I also found a post where someone, apparently running on Windows, couldn't get to a site they needed to, either with IE 9 or FF10.somethingorother, until they downgraded. The support folks report they can get there, from Windows boxes. I've tried Mozilla's workarounds, in about:config, but no joy. My ff is up to date, including both patches from last week, and as those were critical, I'm very loathe to downgrade. a) Is anyone else seeing this? b) Any thoughts on whether it's an IronPort issue, or whether it might be a bug (new or reintroduced) browser problem? mark

I am installing a java program (.sh file), and I get this error. chmodding SCP

I have two machines, and I am trying to copy files from one to the other via SCP. Since this machine is accessible from two of our networks, we're trying to restrict the use of SCP to a select few individuals to prevent unauthorized data transmission from network to network. What we did was we chmodded 700 /usr/bin/scp. The owner has remained root and the group has remianed root. >From a different machine, I'm trying to scp to that machine, but I'm receiving an "access denied". My ssh key is in the authorized users file in the root profile. Anyone have a logical explanation? This e-mail transmission contains information that is confidential and may be privileged. [OT] Where did my Skype icon go?

CentOS-5.7 Skype 2.1.0.81beta Formerly, when I opened Skype a green Skype icon would appear in the upper menu bar of the Gnome desktop. Now it does not. I must have moved or modified something on the Desktop to cause this to disappear although I cannot recall what that might have been. It certainly was not a conscious modification and I would like to get the icon back. The absence is not merely cosmetic. Without that icon once I close the Skype dialog window I know of no other way to activate a desktop dialog window with the running Skype instance. Running Skype again gives the warning that another instance is already running and then quits. A clue to what has happened might be when Skype is in this state incoming notices pop-up from the right hand side of the lower (switcher) menu bar immediately to the left of the work space display. Filing a bug for clamav

IMHO there is a bug in the latest updater for clamav: * it places a freshclam script into /etc/cron.daily that uses a hardcoded datadir not defined in /etc/clamd.conf its never done that before in the last 5 years or so, and I have a script running from cron.d * its overwrites the permissions of existing directories (lib and log) to another new clamav user, although one already exist (making the system unstable) Where do I file a bug report? Please may you help me setup VPS

I am new to Linux so I do not have any special preferences. Yes I have a root access and the VPS is un managed. I am newbie to the Linux world. I will have a new website or maybe 3. I've found that un managed costs vary a lot, as I've found various ways for settings ... some using Xen, others using OpenVZ, and other using Virtuozzo and I found that it all vary regarding Ram allocations for each VPS. Also afraid to stuck with some over sell VPS as I had it before with shared hosting. For un managed hosting VPS will it be easy to secure the server from being hacked? or it is an impossible job for a newbie guy like me? Also for later on regarding updates or patching ... will it be good as well or not? Finally I've found most people using Ubuntu server LTS, so do you advise of using it or any other distribution? I've read a lot of reviews that most are advising for using CentOS or Debian, but I've found the majority are already using Ubuntu server. Note: After a lot of reading I've found that the steps should be as follow: (the funny thing that I've read and know what I should do but each time I am trying to run a command using PUTTY I get an error) - change root password to a secure one. - create another user with admin access with a strong password as well. - disable root remotely access. - use secure connection to the VPS by using PUTTY key instead of username and password login . - change the port to a high one with unusual figure like 26127 or any else - disable ftp and use another secure one. - install a fire wall, CSF firewall and Mod_security or anything else equal or more. - keep the whole thing up-to-date. - secure the whole VPS as much as possible. - finally use a trusted script on the website and his why I will use Drupal (mostly the core ones and nothing else without any modules). This is what I've got so far from reading many tutorials and still get a lot of errors when I follow them (howtoforge.com) is one of the famous websites I've visited. Sorry for being long ... But I am really hope if you here be able to help or guide me. - Late Edit - I've forget to mention that some steps I've forget to mention are: - using back ed control panel (like ISP config, VirtualMin) is facilitating the task but make VPS less secure, so using the command .

Any experience with eSATA and port multiplier...?

Hey, just bought an eSATA/USB dual drive docking station and my CentOS 5 can only see one drive at a time... Any one knows if there are specific parameters to set somewhere? Or do I need a more recent kernel (like upgrading to CentOS 6?) The docking is a Sharkoon Quickport Duo v2 + 2 drives + 1 eSATA cable... http://www.sharkoon.com/?q=en/content/sata-quickport-duo-v2 The eSATA controller is an HighPpoint PciE 2 ports combo eSATA/USB with (supposedly) port-multiplier support Apparently based on an Silicon image Sil 3132 Seems like the port multiplier part does not work correctly... kernel: ata7: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 10) kernel: ata7.15: Port Multiplier 1.1, 0x197b:0x2352 r0, 2 ports, feat 0x0/0x0 kernel: ata7.15: Asynchronous notification not supported, hotplug won't kernel: work on fan-out ports. Expect to have to tweak the config to cover the stuff you've got installed. You can detect sniffing by checking for promiscuous interfaces on the LAN - use proDETECT (http://sourceforge.net/projects/prodetect/) or a similar tool for this purpose. Sound drop out with totem. mplayer Can't open audio device /dev/dsp

Hey all. This morning I found that my audio playback is randomly sprinkled with sound skips and dropouts. I went to /var/log/yum.log and found this: Feb 09 20:18:22 Updated: lame-3.99.4-2.el6.rf.i686 I'm not saying that caused the problem but it's all I could find that changed. When I ls in /dev there is no dsp entry. That would explain why mplayer Can't open audio device /dev/dsp. I don't know why there is no /dev/dsp. SPF Record questions

I am inquiring about how to setup a proper SPF record. I know there are SPF wizards/generators available but each seem to have a different "opinion" of what should be included and what should not be included. Let me give you a scenario of my setup, and hopefully someone can help me out. My domain is: test.com My mailserver hostname is: mail.host.com which also has a MATCHING PTR record mail.host.com (for example) resolves to 50.1.1.1 and 50.1.1.1 resolves to mail.host.com This is a STANDALONE mail server which will receive and send email without any VIP's or load balancing. There is however one additional host that will send out mail from the domain but it wont be receiving mail, it will only be used as an SMTP (outbound only) server attached to a website automailer which is on a seperate webserver... It only generates error reports and sends them out... so technically it isn't a full mail server but it will be sending (outbound only) mail on behalf of the domain. The additional host is: mail2.test.com which resolves to 50.2.2.2 and there is a Matching PTR. These are the ONLY mail servers and IP addresses that will be sending out mail from the test.com domain. Some websites say I should use -all and others say -all will cause some MTA's to reject and ~all is better to use even if those are the only two hosts sending out mail. Would you be able to assist with a solid SPF record?

CentOS4 desktop has stopped recognizing removable media - haldaemon problem?

USB sticks and cameras used to pop right up on my desktop. Now they don't. I've checked the Gnome "Drives and Media Preferences" and nothing has changed -- I have "Mount removable media when inserted" etc. (Tried toggling it off and back on, no effect.) I've logged out and back in, even rebooted. /var/log/messages shows the devices are being recognized by udev: Jun 27 19:53:37 torch kernel: Attached scsi removable disk sde at scsi11, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch scsi.agent[13576]: disk at /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0b.1/usb1/1-5/1-5:1.0/host11/target11:0:0/11:0:0:0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch udevd[1347]: udev done! Jun 27 19:53:47 torch udevd[1347]: udev done! However, that's followed by this: Jun 27 19:54:07 torch hald[5179]: Timed out waiting for hotplug event 699. Rebasing to 699 I restarted hald (service haldaemon restart) and it picked up one of the two devices I'd plugged in, but not the other.

smartd and smartctl

A few weeks ago, one of my servers started complaining, via smartd, that one drive had one unreadable sector. I umounted it, and ran an fsck -c, then remounted it. Error didn't go away. Now, what's really annoying is that I've gotten back to it today, and it's reporting the problem, as it has for weeks now, every half an hour. However, when I run > smartctl -q errorsonly -H -l selftest -l error /dev/sdb it gives me *nothing*. Anyone understand why I get two different results? mark "and I am waiting for the smartctl -t long /dev/sdb to complete"
