confidence in partitioning tool (6.2)

I have a Windows 7 laptop that I want to make dual boot with CentOS 6.2. My plan was to use the Windows Disk Management tool to partition the disk, but I do not have the needed admin rights on the box to use that. Has anyone used the partitioning tool that comes with 6.2 to do this? Can I have some level of confidence that it will not mess things up so that I cannot boot into Windows? if it screws up and makes Windows unbootable that would be a Very Bad Thing. Thanks! -larry

some notes on setting up vsftp on centos6

I was not sure why vsftp (or any other ftp software) was installed as part of the webserver. some quick notes, hope it helps anyone else having an issue. So I yum installed it. I had a bear of a time. But I finally got it to work doing the following. I had to add ip_conntrack_ftp to my iptables-config file or it would not work IPTABLES_MODULES="ip_conntrack_ftp" I had to add this line to my iptables file -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 21 -j ACCEPT NOTE: I tried using other non standard ports, but this caused a problem upon connection with no way to fix it. I believe it has something to do with port 20 part of vsftp which short of rewriting source code seemed too much. So stick with the default port 21 to avoid any issues. in etc/vsftpd/vsftp.conf I left everything pretty much the way it was (after hours of fudging it around). I only changed anonymous_enable=YES to ' NO ' instead. ( I do not want anonymous users, just the few users on the system). This does not address virtual hosts as this is a virtual machine, thus just one website will be on it. The user/pass from a normal user was able to access the /var/www/html/ folder and modify it. That was all I wanted. I did not set up secure ftp yet (meaning I did not add a ssl cert of anything yet for it). I certainly hope this helps others. I was surprised I had to modify what I had to. I was surprised I was unable to change the port number and still want to give that a try. good luck.

Hi, It's just past 3am and for the past 6 hours I've been configuring a secondary name server to replace one that just crashed. Updating/Backing Up Server

I am slowly migrating the data etc off an old CentOS32 4.x server to a new CentOS64 5.x server. The old server only has 15Gbyte of its hard drive in use. Is there an easy/safe way to copy the entire contents of old server root directory to a directory on the new server for future reference? Most of the data is various test files, perl scripts, etc. scattered all over.

mod_rails under Apache under Ceontos 6

Hello listmates, For some reason we don't seem to be able to launch a Ruby-on-rails application ( http://www.redmine.org/ ) on a CentOS 6 machine under Apache. Nor can I find a mod_rails as a separate package for it. Would anyone have any idea what we might be doing wrong? Thanks. Boris.

CentOS 6.2 Autofs stopped working

Seems that autofs in 6.2 stopped working like it used to. We use NIS and automount maps. Primary map auto.sf ssdt -fstype=autofs,rw auto_ssdt auto.ssdt map scratch -fstype=nfs,hard,intr gold:/vol/ssdt/scratch So finding a path such as /sf/ssdt/scratch has always worked and continues to work on non CentOS 6.2 machines. This ability stopped with CentOS 6.2 CentOS 6.0 uses autofs-5.0.5-23.el6.x86_64.rpm CentOS 6.2 uses autofs-5.0.5-39.el6.x86_64.rpm The work around seems to be to remove autofs in CentOS 6.2 And do an rpm install of autofs from CentOS 6.0. I presume it is a flaw upstream. Anyone else observing this behavior? Ed

apache 2.2.22 on CentOS 5...

Hi, while the brand new apache 2.2.22 compiles fine on CentOS 6, it fails on CentOS 5 unless you tell him to use its internal apr lib...I saw in the 2.2.22 release notes: "This release includes the Apache Portable Runtime (APR) version 1.4.5 and APR Utility Library (APR-util) version 1.4.2, bundled with the tar and zip distributions. The APR libraries libapr and libaprutil (and on Win32, libapriconv version 1.2.1) must all be updated to ensure binary compatibility and address many known security and platform bugs. APR-util version 1.4 represents a minor version upgrade from earlier httpd source distributions, which previously included version 1.3." On CentOS 6, we have apr 1.3.9 On CentOS 5, apr 1.2.7 Anyone knows if it will be backported to the packaged apr...? Thx, JD

Hello, my CentOS 6.2 server sends the daily messages correct e.g. today at Feb 1 03:31:14 At the beginning of work hours (9:00 am local time): Feb 1 10:06:17 server postfix/sendmail[27125]: fatal: chdir /var/spool/postfix: Permission denied Solution: restorecon -R /var/spool/postfix/ Afterwards, postfix is OK again. My environment of interest contains a mix of various Fedora and CentOS workstations that all participate in NIS for user authentication which then, upon a successful login, automount an NFS $HOME directory. And here is the rub, I am migrating that NFS back end FROM a Sun X4540 (which has been working flawlessly for the past few years) to an HP X9320 Ibrix system. I replicated my NFS exports from one system to the other, and have tested command line logins over SSH using NIS credentials and that all seems to work quite well. However, whenever a CentOS (or even Fedora for that matter) desktop user tries to log in (either Gnome or KDE) they are unable to successfully log in - and are presented with the nebulous .dmrc error as follows: User's $HOME/.dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644 permissions. User's $HOME directory must be owned by user and not writeable by any other users. Followed promptly by Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of disk space. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem. Now I have, of course, checked the permissions and ownership of the $HOME directory and also the .dmrc file and they are correct - but no matter what I do, this fails. Things I have tried: with NIS turned on, without NIS turned on, using automount, without using automount, using all different kinds of NFS options passed to a local mount of the /ibrix/testing area which I am using to test GUI logins from the local workstation under Gnome or KDE - all to no avail. And of course I have spent countless hours/days googling and have even written to HP for some advice. I am pretty confident that perms/ownerships are correct, but I just cant seem to get anything to work. Has anyone run into a similar problem? Has anyone found a solution? Does anyone have any suggestions that I am not thinking about? How does a linux DHCP machine inform DNS of its name and obtained address

I am using a number of DHCP devices on a network. Working fine with CentOS 5 x86_64. My question is now how do I tell the DNS (after I get my DHCP address) about my devices name and IP address so that others can find me by my machine name? I thought that was an automatic thing - but it appears not. Thanks, Jerry

Hi All, I have a Quantum scalar i40 tape library. I need to configure it to TWO tape partition libraries, e.g., library_a and library_b, so that each library has its own tape drive. Then connect this physical tape library to two different CentOS servers so that each server can see its own media changer and tape drive. I once had a successful configuration on one host but NOT on the other. One host sees the media changer and one tape drive, while the other host only sees the tape drive. After I delete tape partitions and re-create them both servers are totally screwed up. This is CentOS 5.7 kernel 2.6.18-274. Hello, We have an older AFS server, which was running Centos 5.5. It hasn't been updated in a while because of the plans to move it to another server, but it never happened. Thus, we've decided to upgrade it to 5.7… I did yum clean all and yum update. Everything ran smoothly and no issues. After the reboot, zlib.so.1 can no longer be found. /usr/lib64/zlib.so.1 is a symbolic link to /lib64/zlib.so.1, but the file does not exist. Because of this, ssh/yum/rpm do not work… I've been googling, but can't find a solid answer. This is a production server and I need to have it up and running as soon as possible… Any ideas? No, I'm trying to have rsync make an outbound connection over ssh from the rescue environment and getting what looks like an argument error from ssh. Ssh itself works and I can connect to the same target if I run it directly, and the exact same rsync command lines work from a normal host. Either rsync isn't setting up the remote command right, or ssh isn't allowing it and giving a bad error message. The goal here was basically to clone a running machine into a new VMware image booted into rescue mode. Maybe there's a better way to do that anyway. The source is using RAID1 drives in a layout that the VMware converter won't handle. The tar | tar copy seems to be mostly OK with a little tweaking of fstab, etc. I'm going to give 'ReaR' (from EPEL) a try too - it is supposed to do most of the grunge work for you but you have to intervene manually if you want to change the disk layout. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

If I boot a 5.7 install disk with 'linux rescue selinux=0', let it start the network and detect the installed system, ssh seems to work, but rsync fails with "rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [receiver]). Shouldn't it work as long as the underlying ssh connection works? It doesn't prompt for the ssh password and using -essh doesn't change it. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Htaccess management with GUI

My webhotel client wants to be able to manage password protection of their website with GUI. They need to create and destroy directories, set .htaccess authentication, and create usernames and passwords. There seem to be a number of tools that do this, more or less: http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/htaccessweb.htm However, I have not found any good comparisons or reviews. Has anyone tested this kind of tools? - Jussi

Hi all :) Using lm_sensors, I can see few temperature indicator. M/B Temp: +39°C (low = +15°C, high = +40°C) sensor = thermistor CPU Temp: +33°C (low = +15°C, high = +45°C) sensor = thermistor Temp3: +53°C (low = +15°C, high = +45°C) sensor = diode What is that Temp3? It's the hottest. Which one is the best to use if I want to use lm_sensor as a general indicator of my server room temperature? (my request to buy a Mini Goose temperature monitor is still pending). One of my servers wont boot today

Hi All, One of my servers upon a restart today comes up with an error checking filesystems: fsck.ext3: no such file or directory while trying to open /dev/VolGroup-1/Logvol00. /dev/VolGroup-1/LogVol00. The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device> I dropped into the shell and tried mounting: mount -t ext3 /dev/VolGroup-1/LogVol00 I tried booting to media and do 'linux rescue' but it could not mount file filesystems either and nothing at all ends up in /mnt/sysimage. I think this was caused by installing quotas and changing /etc/fstab to add ,usrquota,grpquota. There are 2 x 1tb drives, software raid, mirrored. Can anyone provide advice on how to solve? I would think if I could get /etc/fstab edited back to normal I would be all set. -Jason

Hi, After applying the patch as described by the wiki ( wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Virtualization/VirtualBox/CentOSguest) install.sh still results in a Fail at: Building the OpenGL support module. I don't know how to start debugging myself. Any advise would be welcome. Kind regards, Henri

CentOS 6.2 KDE desktop with KDM - need guidance

I want a CentOS 62 (amd64) KDE desktop with KDM as the GUI login manager. My system environment is as follows: Host OS: openSUSE 11.4 .(amd64) with VirtualBox (64 bit) GuestOS: CentOS 6.2 (amd64) 10GB virtual disk I chose the "Customize Now" option in the installer and chose "KDE" group w/o the "Desktop" group. The system boots to a CLI console. I can login and see that the KDE rpms including kdm are installed but startx gives no joy [1]. I figured that the "Desktop" group is required so chose it in the 2nd try. This time system boots with the GDM login manager; I can choose a GNOME or a KDE desktop from the GDM. Searched around but could not find the GUI switcher applet to switch from GNOME to KDE. Tried the method in this link (albeit it is for 5.x) <http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.1/Deployment_Guide/s2-sysconfig-desktop…> In 6.2 the file "/etc/sysconfig/desktop" does *not* exist, so I created it with the two variables - still no joy. Finally, I hacked the script "/etc/X11/prefdm" and changed the order of the two lines in the Fallback to put kdm before gdm as shown below. <code> .... snip .... Although, I have achieved my objective with this hack, I think I am missing something (a CLI/GUI utility) which would have allowed me to change to KDM w/o hacking the script. Also, I noticed that the KDE menus did not list any item to install/remove and update the software packages on the system. I Are the gtk apps. "Add/Remove Software" and "Software Update" the only tools for this tasks? I need a minimalist KDE desktop environment with the minimum of gtk libs and GNOME apps. A Hardware Observation (and Thank You To John Pierce)

A few days ago, John Pierce made a comment about Intel network cards and that they are more reliable and a better overall card than most. (This is not exactly what he said, but rather I am paraphrasing) My small cluster of servers all had generic PCI nics in them (I was not using any onboard NICS). Today, I replaced the NICS with Intel Pro 1000 PCI-E NICS and replaces our small 5 port TP-Link GB switch with a nice 8 port Cisco GB switch and what a world of difference. The network is zippier for sure. Copying large files between machines using 'scp' is faster, our websites come up better (testing from my wife's work) too. I know some have joked about the PB conversation in terms of not realizing the amount of electricity and space it will take, but I really do read and pay attention and try not to ask totally stupid questions. (OT): Horde initial SQL setup

I haven't been able to find anything useful on the horde sites, and I haven't found anything useful with 'yum search'. I am trying to set up horde webmail using the PEAR install on a new CentOS 5 system intending to migrate existing horde-3.x sites to horde-4.x. The PEAR installation procedure asked for the database type, db name, and password. I had not created the mysql database before running the installation thinking that this would be done as part of the installation (silly me :-). I know little or nothing about the internals of PEAR as I generally avoid PHP if at all possible so I don't know what's necessary to nuke the entire installation and start from scratch other than to restore the VMware VM from the snapshot I made before starting this project. In the past I have done this manually from the various tarballs available from horde.org, and these had the appropriate SQL scripts to initialize mysql and postgresql back ends. The PEAR installation doesn't seem to have these, nor do the sources obtained with 'git'. They do have upgrade scripts to update from various earlier version of horde which could work for existing installations, but would require more work with new installs. I tried finding appropriate SRPMs so I could look at their SPEC files to see how others have done this, but haven't been able to find ones for horde-4.x. The options seem to be: + Get SQL scripts to create the necessary databases. + Find the appropriate SPRMs for the horde components to see how they take care of this in their %post installation processing. + Uninstall the existing stuff using pear, and start from scratch after first creating the appropriate database. + Give up and continue to use the older versions of horde components which do work. Advise on recovering 2TB RAID1

Hi all, I have one drive fails on a software 2TB RAID1. I have removed the failed partition from mdraid and now ready to replace the failed drive. I want to ask for opinion if there is better way to do that other than: 1. Put the new HDD. 2. Use parted to recreate the same partition scheme. 3. Use mdadm to rebuild the RAID. Especially #2 is rather tricky. I have to create an exact partition scheme. Can I just clone the partition table without the data in it using parted? How? Thank you, Fajar.

Installing CENTOS 6.1 to Intel notebook

I have a notebook with HM65 Express chipset and (internal Core i5 2520M) HD Graphics 3000, but a graphical install of CENTOS 6.1 froze the PC. I was able to install by selecting “Install with basic video driver”, but that left the internal display distorted and the external display not recognized. I found a fix for the problem at http://jehurst.wordpress.com/2011/06/26/rhel-6-for-the-clueless-intel-graph… but wonder if anyone knows if this problem (of graphical install freezing) has been fixed in CENTOS 6.2, or (if not) if RedHat is aware of it.

Turn off fetchmail warning?

Is there any way of turning off the fetchmail warning ---------------------------------- fetchmail: Warning: the connection is insecure, continuing anyways. (Better use --sslcertck!) ---------------------------------- which I get when fetching imap mail from my college department? I know they should get a root certificate, but I'm told they are looking into it, but that could take forever. I know I could just filter out the warnings in .fetchmailrc . But I'm wondering if there is any option in fetchmail to turn them off? Booting custom kernels in centOS6.0

Hi, I'm using the procedure described in building customer kenrels centOS5.0. Except for one step where spec file to comment 25 lines from 638, I did every thing. I got rpm files in ~/rpmbuild/RPMS. After installing kernel-firmeware, kernel, kernel-headers, kernel-devel packages it creates OS entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst following "defaults 0" directive. After reboot: 1. Grub is not showing up new kernel in grub menu 2. Manually removing old kernel title in menu.lst, won't booting new kernel. kernel: 2.6.32.71.el6.x86_64. Can anyone talk infrastructure with me?

Hi All, I started a 501c3 (not-for-profit) organization back in February 2011 to deal with information archival. A long vision here, I wont bore you with the details (if you really want to know, e-mail me privately) but the gist is I need to build an infrastructure to accommodate about 2PB of data that is database stuff, stored video, crawl data, static data sets, etc. Right now in my testing of the software I can easily bang down 300+gb a month of data. I have a Comcast business circuit and so far so good with them. I am investigating Sonic.net for a "Business T" solution as they call it. As part of their deal, they want to lease me a "Managed Cisco Router". I know, i know which one? Well none of the Sales people know and they have to find out for me! They also told me that with this router, there is no reason to run my own dedicated firewall. Which I have been investigating recently as well. I do have cisco PIX experience and I am not sure how much of that translates to real world use now-a-days. I have not touched a PIX in 5 years. So I am confused and I would appreciate some advice. So this Cisco device they want to put in front of everything. I then wanted to run my own dedicated firewall (a custom build box probably thanks to John Pierce's advice about pfSense recently). Coming off that dedicated Firewall, I need a DMZ for web-serving, a private VLAN for database servers, etc and a private VLAN for my computers here that I use to do all the work behind the NPO. Here is where I draw some confusion. Where do items such as Varnish Cache, HAProxy go in relationship to firewall, DMZ, etc? HAProxy is a load-balancer, so It should do in front of web-servers so it can decide which web-server to send the traffic to? Varnish Cache is all about caching commonly used resources so it seems that this has to go in front too? Can this be the same box realistically? How does one spec this box out? Database servers and storage servers would go on the private VLAN? I am building a box to store all the data (mysql, video, crawl data, static datasets) and I strongly think it might be a backBlaze POD running CentOS. I know this is not the best list to ask these types of questions on, so if there is a better place besides ServerFault or SuperUser.com, I would appreciate knowing. I just find the folks here have so much knowledge besides CentOS. I look at some of these organizations that talk about their infrastructure like WikiMedia Foundation, StackOverflow and I sort of really become quickly amazed that I could full the garage in my house with equipment easily and my wife wont like that! -Jason

Cannot remove lvs associated with deleted vm guests

At the beginning of January I encountered a problem where several vm guests on a single host somehow managed to see the the virtual disks assigned to other guests on the same hosts. I was unable to resolve this situation and shutdown the affected guests after creating new guest instances and moving the services and data off the corrupted guests. I have since removed these guests via virt-manager but all attempts to remove from the host the logical volumes associated with the former VirtIO disks fail. The volumes are considered open by lvremove and nothing I have tried can get them to close for removal. took a couple months off due to road blocks, hoping a fresh look would allow me to use my server as desired. I have three ports, eth0-2 over two nics. I want to bond them, and then use a bridge to connect to virtual machines on the virtual host computer. Never having done this, I am confused on some parts. Here is where I am at now and any pointers helpful. Single server, centos 6.x My issue is do I add the ip address of the virtual host and where? Do I not add any of the ip addresses of the virtual machines? (thus they will be looked for via the bridge?) Each virtual machine will be getting its own ip address as it will be used for a website. here is the basic configuration I am looking at, with some things not added like hwaddress and a few tweaks (zeroconf?) am I even close? Hello, We are running units in the field that are headless. Sometimes we get units returned that we when we boot them up have some type of filesystem inconsistency that the default preen doesn't fix but running fsck -y does. I want to eliminate the -p (preen option) and always do the -y option anyone know where to make this change? 6.2 install disk jumps to Gnome Partition Manager

Have you seen this problem? I downloaded CentOS-6.2-i386-bin-DVD1.iso verified the md5sum, wrote on a DVD, verified that against the iso. When I boot a computer with that disk, It does not present the usual Linux install menu, it jumps to a thing called Gnome Partition Manager, and that offers a weird sort of "live disk" interface. Having problems with sudoers

I've got a Cento 6.2 server I'm putting together that will become a mailserver. It will have on it MailScanner and MailWatch for MailScanner. I'm using the latest stuff available and have run into a problem with changes I need to make in the /etc/sudoers file. It doesn't seem to take affect after I make the changes, so either the syntax within the file has changed or the way Centos 6.2 actives changes is different, but it's saying that "sudo: sorry, you must have a tty to run sudo". I'm trying to enable the user "apache" to have the ability to run an executable from a web page. One of the common solutions is to do the following: Defaults:apache !requiretty apache ALL = NOPASSWD:/program.name also tried: Defaults !requiretty Defaults visiblepw Anyone have a suggestion? I've got to research the tty stuff for now to ensure there is one available, but beyond that, I'm stumped. Thanks for any help. steve campbell

I'm reading a lot on how to setup my smtp auth on a new Centos 6.2 server. I want to use sendmail and have this running on a Centos 3 machine now, so it's not new stuff to me. Unfortunately, the more I read, the more confusion I seem to have. Firstly, how to generate my certificates. A good recommendation or howto would be in order. I think most of the confusion here comes from the commented names of files used in sendmail.mc for all the auth files. As far as I can tell, the encryption length is the only change I need (going to a minimum of 2048 bits) from the old system generation. Those "pem" files throw me a bit, though. sa-update error with perl

Hi, Running CentOS5 with SpamAssassin v3.3.1-2.el5 installed via yum I remember getting this error a while ago, and it was fixed, but now it's happening again: Subroutine Net::DNS::Resolver::Base::AF_INET6 redefined at /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/Exporter.pm line 65. at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/i386-linux-thread-multi/Net/DNS/Resolver/Base.pm line 65 The results I get from Google regarding this are all circa 2008. The only hints I can find seem to suggest to remove perl-IO-Socket-INET6, but trying to do so using yum (I don't want to start using another method of package management) tells me that spamassassin is a dependency and will also be removed - obviously undesirable. Perl is up to date on the machinge. Am I the only one seeing this? What can I do to fix it?

[OT] Broken system practical tests

A while ago when doing my RHCE someone mentioned to me a rather nifty site that can randomly break a system in a variety of ways - useful for practical testing of a candidate. It was something like monkey test .... or something... Anyway as you can see my memory is failing me.... does this ring any bells with anyone?
