Problem with procmail

I'm trying to setup email on a new server running CentOS-6.2 (x86_64), but for some reason email is going to /var/spool/mail/ despite the fact that my .procmailrc starts ------------------------------- DEFAULT=/var/spool/mail MAILDIR=/home/tim/Maildir/ SHELL=/bin/sh DROPPRIVS=yes ------------------------------- and I have ------------------------------- MAILER(smtp)dnl MAILER(procmail)dnl ------------------------------- in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc . (I have run /etc/mail/make and restarted sendmail .) It is as though procmail is not running, or at least sendmail is not using it. I have the same setup on my old CentOS-5.7 server, and this seems to work fine. gtkmm 3.0?

I am a newbie so this may be a question with an obvious answer. Is there a (practical) way to get gtkmm 3.0 on Centos 6. It comes with gtimm 2.4 and at one point in my random surfing, I thought I found the newer version in the testing section. But I am having trouble getting access to the packages in the testing section, and am not entirely sure what to do if I actually could get access. Any help would be appreciated (or suggestions about where to look for help). Many Thanks. Andy Gilman

man pages conflicting?

Just got this message after an autoupdate on my 5.x system.. should I be worried? Hi, This is the automatic update system on mail.<xxx>.com. There was a problem updating the system. upstart question

I am trying to migrate from old /etc/inittab to upstart. I am close. I used to have 2 or 4 lines in /etc/inittab to start 2 or 4 processes. v1:2345:respawn:/home/silentm/bin/myfile -port 4000 v2:2345:respawn:/home/silentm/bin/myfile -port 5000 something like that... So now I create a file /etc/init/myfile.conf and in it I put: respawn script /home/silentm/bin/myfile -port 4000 /home/silentm/bin/myfile -port 5000 endscript Only the first process is created. Hi all. We currently want to deploy a test private IaaS. It will look something like below: 2 Gb switches several hardware nodes for virtualization (?) 2 10Gb switches redundant storage (?) What are you proposing to use on every level? Eucalyptus/OpenStack/something else for cloud management? And why? KVM/Xen/something else for virtualization? iSCSI/NFS/something else for storage? Please share your experiences and pros/cons which you observed. Maybe also some good howtos? What happened to the mirrors?

Hi all, what happened to the mirrors? Many of them are outdated and older than 2days. They are missing the latest updates from yesterday and the day before yesterday. According to http://mirror-status.centos.org a whopping number of 227 mirrors are currently out of date. This is the major part of all European mirrors. :( Can someone please have a closer look at this? Hi all, Struggling with installing ol Bugzy 4.0.3 onto Centos 5.7. When I run the checksetup.pl script included with Bugzilla, I get the message; /usr/bin/perl install-module.pl Email::MIME So I run this from the command line and get YAML errors; Checking for YAML (any) not found I had installed YAML via; yum install *YAML* The package perl-YAML-0.72-1.el5.rf.noarch is on my system. Any advice on how I can get past this bloody YAML issue? - aurf

Dovecot under CentOS-6

I've been running dovecot on a CentOS-5.7 server. Now I'm moving over to another server running CentOS-6.2. I thought I was running dovecot on the new server, but in fact there was an error during the setup, with the result that incoming mail finished up in /var/spool/mail/ rather than in ~/Maildir , where I wanted it to go. Now I'm wondering if there is some way that I can re-direct the mail in /var/spool/mail/<mymbox> so that it goes through the system as though it were just arriving? I mean, so that it gets distributed into the correct folders under ~/Maildir , as specified in .procmailrc . Hello, with CentOS 6.2 - is it possible to configure OpenSSH daemon to listen on different IPs _and_ ports? I have received a 2nd IP address for my server and have successfully configured by adding the new "/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:1" file. I'd like SSHd to keep listening at the_old_ip:22 but also at the_new_ip:443. The 443 on the_old_ip is already taken by Apache, so I can't just write "Port 22" + "Port 443" to sshd_config. Activating Wireless from command line

Folks Is there a way in CENTOS6 to define and turn on wireless from the command line. My environment is as follows: I'm trying to build a laptop for travel, and have KVM-guests for both Linux Gui and Windows, using internal NAT networking. The underlying host machine doesn't really need to be much more than a NAT provider, and the usual command-line utilities. When I arrive at a new location, and have the network ID and password in hand, I don't mind executing some kind of script (on the host) to create the connection. But when I return to that network weeks later, it should be very easy to complete the connection. This needs to be done in the host machine, not in the clients. So far, I've figured out the following: I issued the following iwconfig wlan0 up (Manually I issued iwlist wlan0 scan | grep ESSID and identified the right network ) I then issued wpa_passphrase {ename} "{pass-phrase}" >> /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf where {ename} is the name of the network, case sensitive and {pass-phrase} is the same as I would enter in the GUI interface, if I wanted to use it. What more is needed? I really want to avoid GUI interfaces if possible. Thanks David Kurn

Question on sys v migrating to upstart

Hi I presently have a line in /etc/inittab (for 5.X based systems) like: v1:2345:respawn:/home/silentm/bin/myfile which runs for any runlevel in 2345. I am looking at migrating that to the new upstart stuff. I can create a file in in /etc/init called myfile.conf and in there have: # /etc/init/myfile.conf start on startup This seems ok... However - my question is how do I stop they myfile and restart it. In the past I would comment out the entry in /etc/initttab and do "init q". then put on the new version lets say... then uncomment the /etc/inittab entry and do another "init q". How do I do that in the new upstart ? Thanks, Jerry

Machine becoming irresponsive

There is a CentOS 5.2 machine that is sometimes found to be offline. It runs a few websites but nothing very high traffic. I happened to notice a few days ago that before it went down, one of the sites written in PHP was throwing errors that it could not connect to the MySQL backend. Two hours later, the whole server was down and wasn't even responding to SSH. It's not my box, but I may have opportunity to look at it. After going through dmesg and messages, if I don't find anything obvious, what should I start looking for? What are the likely, common culprits and how to identify them? Does anyone have any idea what may be going on? Hi All: We have been looking at implementing deduplication on a backup server. >From what I have been able to find the available documentation is pretty thin. I ended up trying to install LessFS on this CentOS 5.7 box but we have now encountered problems with fuse version. Has anyone out there been able to get LessFS running on CentOS 5.7 and can provide some pointers? If not LessFS can you suggest an alternate deduplication software? DNS and Reverse Adresses

Hi, I do have a domain and a couple of different ip networks. E.g. domainname.de and 172.17.0.0/16 and 192.168.200.0/24 In our old dns files I only have a reverse master zone for the 172.17.-lans, but also 192.168.200.x addresses in the forward zone config. My question: dose maybe someone forgot the 192.168.200.x reverse zone files and config and can I just create a file like that for the 172.17 hosts and adding the config for the reverse zone to my named.conf? weird XFS problem

Hello all, I have a CentOS 5.7 machine hosting a 16 TB XFS partition used to house backups. The backups are run via rsync/rsnapshot and are large in terms of the number of files: over 10 million each. Now the machine is not particularly powerful: it is 64-bit machine, dual core CPU, 3 GB RAM. So perhaps this is a factor in why I am having the following problem: once in awhile that XFS partition starts generating multiple I/O errors, files that had content become 0 byte, directories disappear, etc. Every time a reboot fixes that, however. So far I've looked at logs but could not find a cause of precipitating event. Hence the question: has anyone experienced anything along those lines? What could be the cause of this? Thanks. Boris.

doing a new install on top of existing software raid-1

Hi all! One of these days I'm going to upgrade my centos 5.7 box (which is currently configured with raid-1 on two drives) to 6.x. i've been given to believe that I should be able to do a fresh install on top of the existing raid setup, i.e., without having to re-create the raid array, but just use the existing setup. and somewhere in the last few days (in this list I think) someone posted that Anaconda should detect the existing raid array and allow you to re- use it for a new install. so just as an experiment, I booted up the 6.2 DVD (not live) and took it as far as where it sets up the partitioning. So, was I unduly surprised when it DID NOT detect the existing raid? well, a little. more in the category of NOT ENTIRELY PLEASED, actually. I'm embarrassed to say the problem was solved in the most simplistic possible way ... reboot the cable modem. I notice that when the host boots up, all NIC ports are placed in promiscuous mode, which means that DHCP broadcasts should be free to travel across the bridge, so it had to be something about a mismatch in the cable modem's arp cache. Thanks for your suggestions. It's full steam ahead now, and I'm pleased to say the performance of the four m0n0wall VM instances has been very good. Chuck

Wrong PV UUID

Dear All, I have one VG with one LV inside consist of four disk (and four PV) somehow the UUID is changed. I try to restore with the last known good configuration and use pvcreate --uuid xxx --restorefile xxx but I think when I first time do it I did use wrong UUID for two device. but haven't only using command above and haven't used vgcfgrestore. After carefully read the configuration, using hdparm to know device serial number I think I have assign the right UUID for each device. I succesfully use vgcfgrestore, but I cannot mount the device (unknown filesystem, bad superblock, etc). My questions are, is my first attempt to assigning (wrong) UUID make all the LVM corrupt? I see that all LE and PE is still there, the VG and LV size is right but still I cannot mount the volume. Is this just a bad filesystem or the data really gone? Thank you. Transition to CentOS - RAID HELP!

Hi Folks, I've inherited an old RH7 system that I'd like to upgrade to CentOS6.1 by means of wiping it clean and doing a fresh install. However, the system has a software raid setup that I wish to keep untouched as it has data on that I must keep. Or at the very least, TRY to keep. If all else fails, then so be it and I'll just recreate the thing. I do plan on backing up the data first in case of disasters. But I'm hoping I don't have to considering there's some 500GiB on it. The previous owner sent me a breakdown of how they build the raid when it was first done. I've included an explanation below this message with the various command outputs. Apparently their reason for doing it the way they did was so they can easily add drives to the raid and grow everything equally. It just seems a bit convoluted to me. Here's my problem: I have no idea what the necessary steps are to recreate it, as in, in what order. I presume it's pretty much the way they explained it to me: - create partitions - use mdadm to create the various md volumes - use pvcreate to create the various physical volumes - use lvcreate to create the two logical volumes If that's the case, great. However, can I perform a complete system wipe, install CentOS 6.1, and re-attach the raid and mount the logical volumes without much trouble? What follows is the current setup, or at least, the way it was originally configured. The system has 5 drives in it: sda = main OS drive (80 GiB) sdb, sdc, sdd, and sde: raid drives, 500 GiB each. I came to much the same conclusion after I eventually found an article about tinkering with the host kernel device tables to remap each NIC instance. I was going to try it until I discovered that the new motherboard I'm using doesn't properly support IOMMU in the BIOS, which the mapping trick requires. So much for that idea. Your method of not configuring a bridge IP address gets around having the NIC appear to my ISP as having some sort of rogue IP (even if I assign something in the 172.16... range). I wasn't aware that I could bring up the bridge without an IP. But a new problem arises ... one of the m0n0wall instances needs to use DHCP to get a dynamic IP from my ISP (the others are static, so they're ok). How do I get the bridge to proxy the DHCP request and forward the response to the VM guest? I brought up a test instance of m0n0wall but when it asks for an IP on its WAN side, the result is 0.0.0.0/8 so it would appear the request never makes it to the ISP. As a sanity check, I configured the WAN-side bridge to use DHCP and that worked, but it's the m0n0wall VM guest that needs to make the request, not the CentOS host. Suggestions anyone? Redundant DHCP server with mixed static nonstatic ips

Hi, it's time to start our redundant dhcp server setup and I found some suggestions and tutorials. But all setups I found use either static or nonstatic ip adress management. For the static setup I'd setup two servers and copy the configfile from the 'master' to the secondary server and do a dhcpd restart. For the nonstatic I have to setup pool and failover peer configurations to have the lease information synced. My question: Can I mix both types of configuration? May be somewone has an example config for me? We use centos 6.2 and it would be dhcp 4.1.1. Thanks for any suggestion and best regards . CentOS 6.2 KS/Installer

I'm using the kickstart file we developed for v5 on 6.2 in VM (kvm/qemu running on a CentOS 5.6), but it fails: Error partitioning. Could not allocate requested partitions: not enough free space on disks. There's nothing wrong with the disk. Both fdisk and parted works fine, I can view, partition and write a partition table and the disk is 10.5GB. However, looking through the logs, it tries to run 'dmsetup info /dev/sda' which fails! Device /dev/sda not found Command failed The disk setup part looks like this: zerombr clearpart --drives=sda --initlabel part /boot --fstype ext3 --size 200 --ondrive=sda part swap --recommended --ondrive=sda part / --fstype ext3 --size 40000 --ondrive=sda part /scratch --fstype ext3 --size 1 --grow --ondrive=sda Running without a KS, the GUI works (but I still got the problem with dmsetup in the logs). I/) Settings for Skype

I've managed to get Skype set up and working. I can hear the other person talking, but she can't hear me. During a conversation, I tried what I thought to be all possible settings in both the "Volume Control" application and in Skype itself. But no joy. To make matters more puzzling, I had skype working on this same machine last year using CentOS 5.6... or maybe it was 5.7... I don't recall. And I've successfully recorded my own voice with this same microphone on Audacity. So is there some secret to getting the Skype settings right? Or are there some (other) tests I can run outside of Skype to determine what the I/O settings within Skype should be. Any help is much appreciated.

Java+Tomcat on CentOS 6.x

So whats good practice for installing Java/JDK and Tomcat for EL6 these days? The base repository included Tomcat6.6 is built with GCJ which I'd rather avoid. I'm fine with using OpenJDK ... Connecting ethX devices directly to a KVM/QEMU guest OS (no bridging)

Hello CentOS gurus, and a belated Happy New Year (or an early Happy Chinese New Year). I'm in the process of building a CentOS-6 KVM host machine whose only function will be to run four independent 'm0n0wall' firewall guest instances. I have a couple of quad-port Intel NICs to provide four WAN-side and four LAN-side ports, which will not be shared with any other guests. Remote access to the host CentOS is via a separate on-board NIC, so the Intel ports are free to assign. I've Googled until I'm blue in the face, but haven't found a clear explanation of how I can assign each ethX device directly to the guest OS rather than going thru the usual bridge configuration. I need to allow the m0n0wall OS to assign the LAN and WAN IP addresses, if that's possible without using a bridge. Using the Virtual Machine Manager GUI to create the VM guests (which boot up and run nicely), the drop-down list shows all of the ethX devices greyed out. Do I need to somehow start the NICs without assigning IP addresses, so that they show up in 'ifconfig'? Can anyone provide a clear, easy-to-understand procedure for doing this? If necessary, I don't mind using the command-line to create the VMs but the docs aren’t totally clear (to me, at least) regarding NIC assignment. Thanking you in advance for your suggestions, Chuck

Mediatomb under CentOS-6

Is anyone running mediatomb under CentOS-6? I've installed it from rpmforge.repo (I think it used to be in the epel repository under CentOS-5) but I don't know how to configure it. I'm trying to use it to see photos on my Samsung Smart TV (model D5520). The photos (or some of them) come up on the TV, but when I click on them I always get the error message "Not Supported File Format". Earlier last year I had a 5.7 system running with skype. It worked fine. Later last year I had to reinstall my entire system. I didn't install skype then. Yesterday I tried to find a version of skype to use on 5.7, but couldn't find one on skype.com; there's no version for RH/CentOS 5.7. Does anyone know where a working skype can be found? Thanks.

Theoretical Firewall Specs?

So, the more I look at various ways to lay out my infrastructure, the more I am thinking about specs for hardware. Starting with firewalling. How does one determine the specs for a firewall? What I mean is: 1. motherboard/CPU - p4? Dual-Core? Intel i3, i5, i7? 2. RAM? 4gb? 8gb? More? 32gb? 3. Obviously GB Nics! I am bring about 300gb of traffic a month right now and I expect that to increase significantly with my next offerings. Obviously one answer is to but a beefy motherboard that supports lots of RAM and add more as needed, but where does one start out? How do I know if my firewall would need more RAM? How do I know if the CPU is good enough? I still go back to my Cisco PIX days where these devices were amazing on just 256MB of RAM. We piloted a large chunk of Cornell University's Lab Of Ornithology on 2 of these, but now-a-days it seems that a PIX would not be good enough. Is it because the nature of the internet and data and attacks has changed over time? more aggressive? -Jason

anyone doing automatic yum updates via yum-updatesd on production servers?

I've read that it's not recommended to automatically apply updates via yum-updated on production servers, but I keep encountering servers that have this enabled. Are any of you doing automatic yum updates on production servers in CentOS 5 via yum-updatesd? Have you experienced any negative side effects? The only thing I can think of is if say a client had a custom version of PHP installed that was not properly excluded in yum and then it was over written. Unless I'm missing something else that could go horribly wrong. Any feedback is appreciated. (if this question has already been asked my apologies, searching the archive didn't find what I was looking for) Thanks, -PJ
