max user processes - is /etc/security/limits.conf the best place to change?

Hello centos-users, in CentOS 6.1 is /etc/security/limits.conf the best place to change the number of max user processes for a daemon process? (I'm asking because the ".../security/..." part of the path sounds a bit strange) Thank you Alex

Shutdown KVM guest not working

I am in the middle of a rather confusing situation. At the moment I am unable to shutdown a KVM guest machine. Nor am I presently able to open a virt-manager session on the host. I am not exactly sure what has happened but the problem with the vm guest is that issuing a "virsh shutdown 1" from the root console has no effect. # virsh list Id Name State -------------------------------------------- 1 vmguest01.... running # virsh shutdown 1 Doamin 1 is being shutdown wait 5 minutes # virsh list Id Name State -------------------------------------------- 1 vmguest01.... running How do I get this stopped? dd disk will not boot - can't find /dev/root

OS= CentOS 5.4, 64bit. I've always had great luck using dd to copy entire disks, and booting on other systems. However, I'm having difficulty with a couple systems. I boot using an install DVD so the OS disk is quiet, and dd to my target disk: # dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=1024k /dev/sdb is the blank disk. The disks are 2T. After a few hours the operation is complete. But when I try to boot the new disk on my other system, I get the following errors after the CentOS boot menu (it counts down to boot the default disk fine, then this error): (screen shot at http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/645/centosbooterror.jpg ) I've read posts regarding the /dev/root error, and they talk about rebuilding initrd. I've tried some of the fixes mentioned, but have had no success. All I can think of is slightly different hardware on the new system where I'm trying to boot, but I'm not sure what the difference could be. They're both 64bit SuperMicro systems. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear. Thanks!

Minimal Desktop in CentOS6 with kvm

Trying to build a more secure version of a desktop with virtualization enabled. Goal is to perform most Internet surfing and on-line banking from a special-built and hardened Linux load. Have built a bunch of complete "Desktop" versions of CentOS 5.5, 5.6, and 6.0 with this capability. This is the first time I've tried to go smaller. And smaller it is...by about 900 packages. Built a CentOS 6 "Minimum Desktop" today. During the install I added virtualization. Virtualization works, but the guest OS can't communicate via the virtio interface. Anyone able to do this? Any tips on what might be missing in the load? Dave

Group permission problems

Hello all, I'm having an issue with group permissions which I really find hard to understand why. I have created a group called smbusers which I am a part of by doing the following: # groupadd smbusers# usermod -G smbusers michael I then created a directory called foodir, owned by adm with group smbusers and give the following permissions to it: 770 I verify the permissions are correct and are accessible by members of its group, but I cannot access the directory. Everytime I try to cd into the directory, I get a permission denied error. It is a group issue because when I change the permission to 777, I do have access. Below is output I get from different commands: # groups michaelmichael: michael, smbusers # groupsmichael adm #iduid=500(michael) gid=500(michael) groups=4(adm), 500(michael) The /etc/group file shows I'm in the smbusers group but does not show I'm in the adm group (although I believe I added myself to the adm group when I installed the operating system). Clearly, I don't know what I'm doing and I am confused. Can anybody guide me to where I need to go? Thanks,Michael

proftpd graphical clients not working

Group permission problems [RESEND]

Hello all, Re-sending due to incorrect mapping of linefeeds from hotmail. I'm having an issue with group permissions. I have created a group called smbusers which I have added myself to, with the following commands: # groupadd smbusers # usermod -G smbusers michael I then create a directory called foodir, owned by adm with group smbusers. Permissions are correct (770) but I cannot access the directory. When I change permissions to 777, I can access. Below is output from various commands, run as user michael: $ groups michael michael: michael, smbusers $ groups michael adm $ id uid=500(michael) gid=500(michael) groups=4(adm), 500(michael) The /etc/group file shows I'm in the smbusers group but does not show I'm in the adm group (although I believed I added myself to the adm group when I installed CentOS). Clearly, I don't know what I'm doing and I'm confused. Can anybody guide me to where I need to go? Thanks, Michael

iSCSI best practices

Hey folks, I had some general questions and when reading through the list archives I came across an iSCSI discussion back in February where a couple of individuals were going back and forth about drafting up a "best practices" doc and putting it into a wiki. Did that ever happen? And if so, where is it? Now my questions : We are not using iSCIS yet at work but I see a few places where it would be useful e.g. a number of heavy-use NFS mounts (from my ZFS appliance) that I believe would be slightly more efficient if I converted them to iSCSI. I also want to introduce some virtual machines which I think would work out best if I created iSCSI drives for them back on my Oracle/Sun ZFS appliance. I mentioned iSCSI to the guy whose work I have taken over here so that he can concentrate on his real job, and when I mentioned that we should have a separate switch so that all iSCSI traffic is on it's own switch, he balked and said something like "it is a switched network, it should not matter". But that does not sit right with me - the little bit I've read about iSCSI in the past always stresses that you should have it on its own network. auto-creating a local yum cache?

Hey folks, I just did an update on a system that is taking the better part of a day ( 5.3 ---> 5.7 ) mainly due to file download times. And I have 4 or 5 more systems to do. I know I can create my own repository and then point them at it - but that is difficult here because rsync is blocked (ggrrrrrr...) Surely there must be a way to have yum on the first box automatically cache everything and then have the other boxes use the cache? Maybe if not directly, then with squid or something like that? I've got a CentOS 6.1 x86_64 VM running atop CentOS 6.1 x86_64 KVM host. The VM is in production, so any fix needs to be fairly non-intrusive. In the VM, yum consistently segfaults when reading non-base repositories. The problem appears to be related to the faulty creation of /var/cache/yum/x86_64/<<reponame>>/primary.xml.gz.sqlite The latest installment of this problem is related to the 6.1 cr repository, but it's happened with other non-base repos in the past. Steps to duplicate, fix, and re-duplicate the problem: 1. "yum clean all && yum update" will segfault. strace shows that the SIGSEGV is received while doing work in the cr repository. 2. Run "yum clean all && yum update" on a different CentOS machine that uses the exact same yum repositories. The copy /var/cache/yum/x86_64/6/cr/primary.xml.gz.sqlite from the working machine to the broken one. 3. "yum update" on the broken machine works flawlessly! 4. "yum clean all && yum update" on the broken machine (which removes and tries to rebuild the .sqlite file) will segfault once again. The primary.xml.gz.sqlite file that gets created on the broken VM is quite a bit smaller than that on all my working machines. On the broken machine, it looks like PRAGMA foreign_keys=OFF; BEGIN TRANSACTION; CREATE TABLE db_info [...]; CREATE TABLE packages [...]; # several more CREATE TABLE commands CREATE TRIGGER removals [...]; COMMIT; On all my working machines, it looks like PRAGMA foreign_keys=OFF; BEGIN TRANSACTION; CREATE TABLE db_info [...]; INSERT INTO "db_info" [...]; CREATE TABLE packages [...]; # several more CREATE TABLE commands CREATE TRIGGER removals [...]; CREATE INDEX packagename [...]; # several more CREATE INDEX commands COMMIT; The working machine all do an INSERT into db_info and create several indexes; the broken machine does not. Otherwise, the sql statements are identical. On the broken machine, I've done yum reinstall sqlite yum reinstall python yum reinstall yum\* But the outcome is the same. I did not edit any config files among the tweaks. When I booted the system, NIS was not working right. I found that these files had been changed: /etc/yp.conf /etc/resolv.conf /etc/ntp.conf /etc/auto.master /etc/hosts.allow. Hello I run into this problem on CentOS 5.7 (Final), that if I try to source a FIFO in bash, my command will be silently ignored and nothing from the FIFO is interpreted. Here is a simple example: [root@appserver2 ~]# mkfifo /tmp/myfifo [root@appserver2 ~]# echo ls -l >/tmp/myfifo & [2] 23771 [root@appserver2 ~]# source /tmp/myfifo # no `ls´ output here... [root@appserver2 ~]# rm /tmp/myfifo rm: remove fifo `/tmp/myfifo'? y [2]+ Exit 1 echo ls -l > /tmp/myfifo [root@appserver2 ~]# CentOS 5.7 comes with 'GNU bash, version 3.2.25(1)-release (x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu)'. I have CentOS 6 and with webmin/virtualmin panel, and each time that I reboot Apache can't start: Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80 no listening sockets available, shutting down I do: netstat -tulpn| grep :80 tcp 0 0 :::80 :::* LISTEN 1584/httpd killall -9 httpd And then Apache can start. Combining CentOS 6.1 DVD images

I would like to create a single installation directory from the DVD1 and DVD2 CentOS 6.1 release DVD images, suitable for network (NFS) installation. If I mount each of the ISO images and copy their files to a single directory, will that work? That is, are the files on each DVD unique such that I won't be overwriting any files from DVD1 when doing the DVD2 copy? Will pointing a CentOS network installation (CentOS-6.1-i386-netinstall.iso) at this directory satisfy it at runtime for the files needed to do a full 6.1 install? Thanks.

rhost= does not include IP in /var/log/secure

For a couple months or so I have noticed that failed dovecot logins do not print the offending IP address in /var/log/secure which prevents fail2ban from blocking appropriate ports. All had worked well for several years. Box is 5.7 fully updated. In my virtualmin panel I have many email configured, but when I acces Horde and I try to login with email/password or user/password, Horde tell me login or password not good. FreeNX on Centos 5.7

HI All, I am new to Linux so please bare with me. I am running Centos 5.7 with FreeNX-0.7.3-8.el5 and I have successfully installed everything and configured my first user. However when I log in using the NX Client I see the desktop however I don¹t have mouse or keyboard access. Is there a setting I have to apply in order to get mouse and keyboard access? iscsid still starting up after turning it off

I have a set of CentOS 5.7 workstations, on which I have turned of iscsid using 'chkconfig iscid off'. However, when some of them reboot, iscsid starts anyway. Also, when I do an 'service --status-all", iscsid is listed twice (this is true on both the workstations where iscsid starts and the ones where iscsid doesn't start), which seems to indicate, I think, that it is listed as a service twice. How can I tell from whence iscsid is starting, even after it's been turned off? How to list virt machine size with virsh?

I have started to migrate one CentOS5 machine from xen to kvm. The stability of the machine is much better (too much crashes with xen). I was used to do a "xm list" to get a list of clients. On the KVM machine I need to do a "virsh list". What I miss in that overview is the memory size of clients. I found "virsh dominfo <client>" but that is for just that one client (and I have several running). The same question for "xm top". I found that there seems to exist virt-top, but I could not find this in a repository for Centos5. virt-manager is a little overkill on this machine (it does work though but I like command line quick info). Netinstall wants to use wlan0

Hi, Folks -- I'm setting up an Acer Aspire 5250 as a Christmas gift, CentOS 6 netinstall insists on trying to configure wlan0 but I'm using a wired DSL connection, consequently netinstall fails and only offers the option to Retry. There's an article on slashdot about the Duqu team wiping all their intermediary c&c servers on 20 Oct. Interestingly, the report says that they were all (?) not only linux, but CentOS. There's a suggestion of a zero-day exploit in openssh-4.3, but both the original article, and Kaspersky labs (who have a *very* interesting post of the story) consider that highly unlikely, and the evidence points to brute-force attacks against the root password. Then they update openssh and openssh-server. And then, at some point, they apparently take an ubuntu/debian openssh 5.9p1 (then p2) source package, and install *that* My manager suggest updating openssh to block other attackers (who actually might screw their attack). It still seems odd to me to yum update, then build the software from source. JNLP app problems

Hey folks, I'm trying to use a 5.3 box to run some JNLP apps, but all I get is a view of XML. I try doing some googling and don't come up with much other than this one thread that says I may need both 32 and 64 bit Java to run JNLP. Hello, I am instaling Horde on my CentOS 6, and when I do "webmail-install" I have a lots of this warnings: Warning: date(): It is not safe to rely on the system's timezone settings. You are *required* to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier.
