Back up system

I have centos 5.7 (server). I need to configure it for backup system, that means it have to back up or back up documents shall be posted or send to this server from various users (clients using windows machine and ubuntu). Can someone help me with instructions on how i can make this possible? And /or is it possible to set active directory on this machine and if possible how? CentOS 5.7 Ethernet bonding - order of enslavement matters?

Setting up bonding in active-backup mode 1 (using ARP monitoring) on a server, it looked OK, but pulling the active link cable didn't actually work, it didn't fail over. Eventually with manual playing around with modprobe, ifconfig, ifenslave, etc., a solution was stumbled upon: enslave the eth1 device before eth0, and all is good. Why this should matter is a puzzle - I could not find anything in bonding.txt or on the web about it. I had to change ifup-eth to fix the problem. Any ideas on why the enslavement order matters, or a better solution to work around it? The rest of this post is details. To fix this, I had to patch /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth to reverse the order when it is updating the sysfs slaves list. I don't like this solution (changing standard system files) but it seems like the best one for now, and should not break anything. Maybe it's the particular network devices. Eth0 is the onboard device, using an updated VIA Velocity driver (velocityget 1.42 instead of default via-velocity): 05:00.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. Backup live system

Though I've worked with enterprise systems, I'm not familiar with FOOS backup software. Which of those recommended would allow me to backup a system while users are active on it? If it matters the system uses LVM. I'd also like to be able to avoid needing the network if possible. I'm running ruby-1.8.7 and gem-1.3.7. Listing the gems available for xslt, and what catches my eye is the x86-mingw32 items. Looking on CentOS 5 I found the package "mingw32-iconv" in EPEL, but am unsure if that is what would solve this. Silly logrotate question

Ok, I have Googled this and either I am not asking the right way or I just can't see what's in front of me (sorry)... We have log files called app.2011-10-119.log (with the date changing every day). The log is created by the application each day at midnight. I have logrotate set to rotate files ending in .log at 4am, with copytruncate on by default. If I list the files I see all the old app.2011-10-<X>.log files with a 0 file size. If I turn off copytruncate, the current days log file will be removed everyday at 4am. How can I satisfy both the need to remove yesterday's log file while keeping the current day? Here is the logrotate file: /var/log/app/*.log { daily rotate 10 compress missingok notifempty create 0644 user user } I added notifempty to keep the old empty log files from being compressed... I have no personal experience with rack mount chassis. >From the past postings, I reckon there are members, in this list, who have experience in rack mount setups and would like get their advice. To reduce the H/W cost, I am considering Linux mdadm RAID10 on a 2U chassis. I would appreciate clarification on the following: In rack mount chassis, do the cages that house the hard disks have the following feature? (a) Indicate disk failure. Hello Group, I am installed some application running on top of Centos 5.2 OS and these applications are running fine. However, we are thinking of upgrading our 5.2 Centos to 5.7 (hot upgrade). Hi all, I'm looking for network mapping software that would walk the local subnet and using snmp/cdp/nmap & friends produce a picture of network connections for documentation purposes. I've seen some for wintendo, but haven't found any decent for linux and CentOS specifically. Is this intentional? If so, why? This has consequences which I think are counterintuitive: if(array(1) -> find('whatever')); This evaluates as true. - Jussi

Xfce from minimal install

Dear All, because I have a lot of older machines and laptops (512Mb) I would like to use Xfce. So I installed CentOs 6 from the normal netinstall cd and selected minimal ( just over 200 packages). From there I enabled EPEL repo and did : #yum groupinstall Xfce after that I installed Xorg and the driver for Intel ( it's on a Dell laptop ) after startx I get a get a lot of gnome-session warnings; 'Unable to find provider 'gnome-panel' of 'gnome session: Pango warning ' and many more. So can anyone help me make further adjustments? thanks for any tips in advance. greetings, James Opensource Software is the future.

CentOS 6.0 i386 DVD

Anybody have tricks to write the i386 ISO image to DVD? I've tried DVD+-RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R in both Windows 7 (two different writers) and rebooted into CentOS 6 (x86_64) and tried cdrecord (now called wodim). On wodim I've tried overburn, reducing speeds, etc. All give the same results: the same number of bytes are written - indicating the disc is full (according to my calculations) and wodim exits thinking it had a buffer underflow problem. I had no problem creating the x86_64 install DVD, which is smaller, and installing it next to my Windows. I just plug in a usb thumb drive and hit <ESC> when I want to run CentOS there and it works fine. The inability to create the i386 DVD initially prevented me from trying to install a desktop system on an old Acer running 4.8 (hasn't been booted in ... nearing a year?). I got around that by deciding to put the iso image on an external usb drive, exporting it via nfs and doing a network install. It had been so long since I dinked with any of this stuff it took me a couple of days of googling around, reading man pages, ... to get that working. Mostly having to do with iptables ports not being open. Sheesh! Black Hats create a lot of grief with their shenanigans! Anyway, then it panics when it starts writing the hard drives - I'll post another mail on that. Anyway, my life would've (will be) a bit simpler if someone can clue me in to how to get that image onto a DVD using either CentOS 6 or Windows. Checksums pass. Any hints gratefully accepted. CentOS-6 install on 1 Tb drive fails

I am attempting to load CentOS-6 onto a ST31000524AS 1Tb SATA drive in a Supermicro 5015A-EHF-D525 system. The BIOS sees the drive and the CentOS install process sees and initializes it as well. However, even when I accept the default partitioning, I get an error during the drive formatting prior to installing the OS. The error message is: "Could not commit to disk /dev/sda". I get this error whether the drive is configured as IDE or AHCI in BIOS. The advanced BIOS configuration section makes reference to LBA addressing and a maximum value of 137 Gb. However, I had previously equipped this very system with a 500 GB SATA drive and had not experienced any problems. Does anyone have any idea as to what might be happening here?

SELinux triggered during Libvirt snapshots

I recently began getting periodic emails from SEalert that SELinux is preventing /usr/libexec/qemu-kvm "getattr" access from the directory I store all my virtual machines for KVM. All VMs are stored under /vmstore , which is it's own mount point, and every file and folder under /vmstore currently has the correct context that was set by doing the following: semanage fcontext -a -t virt_image_t "/vmstore(/.*)?" restorecon -R /vmstore So far I've noticed then when taking snapshots and also when using virsh to make changes to a domain's XML file. I haven't had any problems for the 3 or 4 months I've run this KVM server using SELinux on Enforcing, and so I'm not really sure what information is helpful to debug this. The server is CentOS 6 x86_64 updated to CR. CentOS 6.0: panic installing i386 on old Acer Desktop

Well, after much trial and tribulation I got to the point I could nfs mount the CentOS 6.0 i386 iso image and try an install. So I stuck in the net install CD (latest from CentOS), mounted the nfs iso image and gave it several shots. It goes swimmingly until I click "write disks". Then there's a kernel panic. This with both the graphic and text mode installs. As mentioned, I've not yet researched/figured how I might capture this from my KVM. I've got some 5.x and 6.0 (with cr updates) and windows units available on my homegroannetwork LAN if there's a way to do it over a network. I've got some old serial cables (and various null modem ones and/or adapters) and Wyse-60 terminals but I don't even know yet if I can boot this with output to a serial port. I'll be checking that. If someone has figured out how to capture the output in my situation during initial system install, I'm all "ears". The system still boots the old CentOS 4.8 (first boots in around a ... year(?)) and I did dmidecode and a couple other short commnds that I hope is enough for someone to offer further direction or suggestions. Apologies for the size but it's been so long since I did any low-level stuff I was afraid I'd snip something important. I tried, based on *old* memories, adding kernel arguments of noapic and nolapic (IIRC). Still no joy. Virtual host package, command line, I need help

I am at wits end with this KVM. It is hard to get the information needed to do this properly with centos 6 and KVM since it is so new and the googling of 'KVM' brings up everything except kernel based virtual machines. What I have done... 1) my cpus have virtualization 2) centos 6, selected 'virtual host' package 3) it goes to command line 4) I have made virtual guests with virt-install, in LVM folders, not images 5) 'cannot display' is all I get from command line The packages installed seem to have many gnome and vnc rpms. (and x-windows stuff too) Virt-manager was installed but only produces errors when run from command line I am unable to get anything past getting the guest running since I cannot open any kind of display. I have been able to easily do this in a gnome desktop, but figure command line is going to be less overhead for the server. I have added --vnc and tried some other things, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get a graphic or text install to come up on the local machine to save my life. With all the gnome packages (and there are quite a few) that were installed with the 'virtual host' package I figured something would come up, but all attempts have failed miserably. I am stuck in command line with no way out. I do plan on putting up a step by step video when I finally get one working, but after a few days of this (and seeing hundreds of websites with others having the same issue) I am wondering if anyone has ever got it working and what they did? This is just a pure install of centos 6, 'virtual host' package, command line, yum updated, able to make guests, no video options working for me. what is the magic command to bring up some of that gnome stuff for virt-manager or to just see the install window for a guest?? any help appreciated and most welcomed. Hello the logwatch from my CentOS 6 / 64 bit machine (minimal install, with permissive SELinux) keeps reporting me: **Unmatched Entries** PAM adding faulty module: /lib64/security/pam_fprintd.so: 9 Time(s) PAM unable to dlopen(/lib64/security/pam_fprintd.so): /lib64/security/pam_fprintd.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory: 9 Time(s) I've found this bug report - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=656434 But I'm not sure what's the best workaround for me - if I'm just running an Apache (Drupal) + PostgreSQL website? Should I install fprintd-pam (got that from "yum whatprovides") Thank you Alex

c6 xen guest install, golf, and geany

List, Is it possible to do a text install (<512RAM) of C6 server, with support for X11 forwarding over ssh, and get geany (editor) to work over ssh? I got X11 forwarding to work when I have a full Xfce desktop, but not with a server setup. I would like to golf this... IOW find the minimum number of packages. Any hints or kickstart configs for the needy? -- Mark

Hi, I'm needing to expand a LUN on my EMC CX4-120 SAN. (Well I already had done it). On this LUN I had a PV of a cLVM VG. Know I need to run pvresize on it. Has anybody done this on a cLVM PV ? I'm trying to rescan the devices, but I can't "see" the new size. And, googling on it I can only find RHEL5.2 responses. Hi. We have several Centos 5 firewalls in our company - they are all in bridging mode. We updated them to the latest Centos 5.x last night. 4 hours later there was a crash.. (previously it had never crashed - and had been running for at least 1.5 yrs) The crash occurred when someone added a rule, after rebooting it was fine - the thing is it can't have been a bad rule as the first thing the server does is load the firewall (same) rules.. Centos 6.0 , DRBD

Hello List, i am new to Centos and did my first install on a server. I got it working that also looks inzo the epel repositorie. Now i want to install DRBD. But yum search drbd returns me only a package i dont need. Do i have to enable the epel-test repo to get itß But test sounds not stable for me and we switched to centos for stability. anyone here can help me or give me any hints on drbd on centos 6? Do i have to compile by hand? marko

CentOS 5.7 PHP upgrade

I have 3 servers 2 of which run CentOS 5.5, and one with 5.7. I was able to easily upgrade the PHP version to PHP 5.3.8 on the CentOS 5.5 boxes but was thwarted on the 5.7. Does anyone have any tips for how to get PHP 5.3.x installed on CentOS 5.7?

A SATA backplane likely will have a signal bus connector (Suoermicro server backplanes do) but onboard controllers probably won't supply the other end Built servers definitely will as john points out. Better hardware RAID HBAs probably shoild have the complimentary signal bus connector. Make sure your system builder or supplier gets you the right cable bits - i'm pretty sure they're not universal. - csawyer

Scp and SFTP speed much difference???

we have CENTOS 5.X on server A and Server B. Both servers have Gigabit network card connect to same switch. I test network speed from Server A to Server B and found speed much difference: SFTP: 42 MB/Sec SCP: 20 MB/sec SCP command: scp -Crp -o CompressionLevel=1 user1@ServerB:/TMP/File1 . Anyone know how to improve SCP speed?

Install Centos on remote machine?

hello , i have to an remote server contact via rescue console. How can i install centos there without any image or cd? with gentoo i untar a stage3 tarball and latest portage , baking kernel - go! (shortversion) but how to do this with centos? i gooled last hour but only find howtos with cd / dvd. the remote server i can only contact via kvm or rescue console. any ideas? marko

Emergency help needed on host network randomly stop working.

Hi, This is a Centos 5.5 host with one xen guest. About 2 weeks ago, the host randomly lost network connection. By this I mean I could not connect to the services on it, or ping it. Also was the status of the guest. From serial console, I connected to the host, trying to see what happened. No clue (any error messages) in messages or dmesg. ifdown/ifup the interface did not help, either. Only rebooting was my only choice. Searching through Google, I got the information that some other guys met similar problem, and resolved by setting stp on with the bridge interface. I set it, too. And the problem still occurs. Mock - Problems building Centos5 package on Centos6 - where can I ask for advice ?

Hi. I am trying to use Mock to rebuild a .src.rpm file I have made for PHP 5.3.8 (for Centos6) I have managed to install deps fine with mock. When I try to rebuild the package though I get. Odd issue with C6 and NIS

I seem to have this very odd issue with CentOS 6 WRT NIS. I have taken the package selection that I used with CentOS 5 and basically plopped it into my C6 kickstart file (see below). On C5 this works just fine and I'm able to log in with NIS credentials just fine. However, it looks like on C6 if you use a package selection like this, you also need to specify the yp-tools package as part of the kickstart *even though* you specify an authentication method of NIS in the kickstart. Deciding when to do system encryption

Hello All, I have read that system encryption slows a computer down. However, I am more interested in when to use it. Consider the following scenarios: 1. You have a server in a secured server room on a rack (is there any need and advantage to having system encryption in this particular case) 2. you have a server sitting in an office that is accessible by everyone 2. You have a desktop 3. You have a laptop So my questions are: What situations/scenarios do you consider before implementing system encryption? CentOS 6 is a bear

Gotta say, centos has been tough to install and get working. The anaconda installer makes large drive setups horridly tedious (especially if reinstalling a lot). Package selection seems a bit off... I did a virtualization package, no custom..did not install qemu, libvirt, and all attempts to do any virtualization failed due to non-installed packages. Then I decided to select all the virtualization packages in custom, but had selected 'web server' as the base package. I was never able to connect to the net here at home...apparently some things with 'modprobe' did not install and the eth devices 'does not exist' or something like that. Then I decided on the entire gnome package, with all the bells and whistles...everything worked, but who wants that? I removed some packages in gnome to see and reboot made machine dead. Did that 4 different times with very few package removals. Did a number of various tries with custom selections, but the dependencies seem to not be grabbing all it needs to work. Never got a non gnome setup to recognize eth devices (well, one time, but it never was able to get the net). I just installed a custom set up, all virtualization packages- virtualization selected as base. I added some gnome stuff and a few other doo dads.....booted up..went right to the command line.... no virt software works, errors everywhere. Display will not come up (x, vnc, or gnome no matter what).. Every installation, in first boot up had major missing or odd problems. One time I booted up with a gnome set up and selinux was stopping 5 differetn gdm programs..at boot...due to security risks... wtf? Any attempt to disable or make selinux permissive results in a dead machine, unable to ever boot again (left one up for 12 hours, never came back up, thought it was relabeling, but no message.) Removing packages with the gnome running only worked about 10% of the time, all others resulted in dead machine at reboot. I am considering, the only way to actually install and use this as a virtualized host is to go full desktop and hope the selinux enforcing will not break the system (with all the programs it will not let run on boot)... I have never, not once, been able to connect to the net in the command line setups...I know how to configure eths, network, dns, etc...not once, not even dhcp..config eth0 up, etc.. Gnome has not a single issue with the same exact file setups.. Many command line setups would not even see the eth devices, something about modprobe this or that not installed.....wth? quite an interesting task. I have now taken the server out of the center and am just going to endlessly install until I get a system that is low resources and actually allows the virtualization to work. My last install, with all virt packages selected...?..... cannot run virt-manager, libvirt, though some virt programs do work...why? something each needed to run was not installed as a dependency....<smacks head> Reinstalling would not be so bad, but the anaconda installer does not quite set up the drives the same on a reinstall forcing a deletion of partitions and redoing the entire setup..quite annoying /rant off
