Installing RPM using --prefix and possible libvirt patch

I'm trying to install libvirt to /opt/libvirt, in order to test a patch I've worked into the current release, but it seems RPM is ignoring the --prefix command. As a side note, where should I direct my patch to possibly have it put into the official centos release? I had to slightly modify what was posted in the above link to make it work with 0.8.1. lftp mirror replication

so I have an internal mirror I was replicating off mirrors.kernel.org via lftp, using a script... /usr/local/bin/lftp -c 'open ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/pub/ && \ lcd /export/mirror && \ mirror --continue --verbose=1 -x ia64 -x s390 -x s390x \ -x alpha -x SRPMS centos' well, kernel.org is down now, due to their being hacked, grrrr. if I switch this to another source archive, will it 'just work' or will there be any differences in the file dates that will end up causing massive new downloads of the same data? and, is it just me, or is the mirror list on http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=30 a lot smaller than it used to be? -- john r pierce N 37, W 122 santa cruz ca mid-left coast

Installation on Intel DH67BL motherboard failed

Hello all I tried to install Centos 6 on Intel DH67BL motherboard with i7-2600 processor and a PCI Parallel/Serial port Card. This machine is running Win7, Ubuntu & Fedora 15. Booting from DVD, the machine boots up in text mode & loads vmlinuz and then the screen goes grey. Pressing a keyboard key does some dvd/hdd activity, so the machine is not hung. So the issue is obviously the graphics chipset. Research in CentOS forums shows that this may be supported by CentOS 6.1 machine. Can I install graphics/network support from some other repo, till 6.1 arrives and then again I can reinstall with only CentOS repos. My skillset is limited to compiling from source if instructions are there, but not trial & error otherwise. Any pointers? With best regards. Sanjay.

disk duplication question

I have need to duplicate centos 6 on 133 computers. I purchased a disk duplicator make my master and the duplicator does 11 at a time. All is good so far... When I take a duplicated disk and stick it in the "new" box which is different than the master machine of course all seems to work except the network. So of course the MAC address for the NIC doesn't match so the network doesn't work. My solution was to edit ifcfg-eth0 and remove the HDADDR line and edit udev/70-persistant-net.rules and remove the MAC address from the network SUBSYSTEM line. The network does come back on and everything seems fine. Is this the correct way to do this? Making a master and being able to stick the duplicated disk in another machine? Thanks, Jerry

Actual Solution: You don't have to change anything on these laptops. But it is a good tip that when installing from external cd/dvdrom, if it first does not work, change usb port and try again. I changed back the BIOS to AHCI. I was previously plugged into the top left USB port I.e. the one on the left hand side closes to the monitor or back side. When lenovo's external CDROM/DVD is plugged into this port, I am unable to install linux in general or other OS's. Once I plug it into any of the other USB ports bottom left or right, it works perfectly. No wonder I haven't found any problem posts regarding x220 and CentOS/RHEL. Thanks for all your time supporting me. Fantastic responses on this mailing list. persistent custom lines in /etc/hosts?

Hello there, I've edited /etc/hosts to add few custom IP/hostnames couples. After each reboot, I have to add them again. I've then added /etc/sysconfig/network/hosts, but it seems to ignore it or at least ignore 127.0.0.1 assignments I'm doing in it. Is there a mechanism I'm not aware of, or doing things wrong to make my custom IP/hostnames assignments permanent after network services restart? Regards, -- wwp

CentOS 6: ethernet "ifconfig up" failure

On my CentOS 6 partition of my laptop: First note that for this test, NetworkManager is not running because I did: chkconfig --del NetworkManager and then rebooted. Here is my ifcfg-eth0: DEVICE="eth0" NM_CONTROLLED="no" ONBOOT=no HWADDR=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx TYPE=Ethernet BOOTPROTO=none IPADDR=192.168.2.5 PREFIX=24 GATEWAY=192.168.2.1 DNS1=192.168.2.1 DNS2=192.168.2.1 DEFROUTE=yes IPV4_FAILURE_FATAL=yes IPV6INIT=no NAME="System eth0" UUID=xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx I reboot to level3, do startx (to KDE 4) then do: # ifconfig eth0 up # ping 192.168.9.1 connect: Network is unreachable If I edit ifcfg-eth0 to set ONBOOT=yes and reboot, I get a proper connection. KVM on CentOS 6

Today I suddenly have two VMs that have read only file systems. The host is CentOS 6, as are the two VMs with this problem. The first symptom was on a new VM I installed ISPConfig onto. I got through the entire process with only a dependency issue between php-pecl_apc and php-accelerator. After completing the installation I noticed some funny things, but I assumed it might be the addition of quotas and remounting with quotas on. so I didn't think much of it and rebooted the VM. It failed to reboot because the file system should not be switched to read-write. Since it was a new VM and installing ISPConfig was an experiment, I just wiped it with the intention of starting over. While I was creating another clone of a CentOS 6 image on the host, I looked into one of the other VMs running on that host, which has been up and running for 47 days. Same problem, without rebooting. XORG and LCD Projector

dear guys, I have a problem between my CentOS 5.5 (on Axioo notebook) and LCD Projector. When I connect my notebook to LCD Projector, it can detect my notebook. But when I press Fn + F7 to activate dual monitor between my notebook and LCD Projector it goes to blank screen. FYI, the LCD Projector is NEC but I don't know the series. I've tried to change display using dual head monitor but it has no effects. Postfix Question - CentOS 6

I'm trying to figure out if this is a bug... I'm running Postfix with Dovecot Authentication and have Amavisd-new as the front end. I fought with the install and in particular being able to send mail.... Auth failed. Hours of looking through all the config files yielded nothing... so I started Googling about. I finally found a comment at the bottom of a blog to check permissions on: /var/spool/postfix/private/auth It seems this must be owned by postfix but it was owned by root. So, can somebody check to see if this is there in a CentOS 6 Postfix install where Amavis is not installed? And if so, what are the default permissions? Thanks, John Hinton

I guess the reason I am doing it, is as I love the way CentOS works, I.e. the stability and performance. I am currently running it on a ThinkPad Edge 11 and all seems to work great. Just looks like the e1000e NIC driver is not working with the kernel in 6.0. I have also tried this with RHEL 6.1 but that also gets me stuck at the booting of the x220. I have tried to understand how the "load driver disk" works with CentOS and RHEL based systems, but I am failing to get it working. I have got my hands on the e1000e driver and patched the initrd but still no go. That's why I wanted to check if anyone else has got this working :) Anyone else? Conga problems

Hi all, I've spent the past little while attempting to setup Conga on a two node CentOS 6 cluster. While I do have the cluster up and running, I'm running into problems attempting to start services through luci on either node. A little background information: -Both nodes have dual NICs, one interface on each node will be used for the WAN, the other is a private gigabit crossover link between the nodes. -Both nodes are in /etc/hosts -The nodes are up to date, and both are running x86_64 -SELinux and iptables have both been disabled -To get the cluster running, luci, ricci, and their dependencies were installed, and 'service start ricci', then 'service start luci' where issued. ricci created certs when first run. Where are the CentOS 6 security updates?

This is about a year old with many known security problems, so it really shouldn't be used. CentOS 5 and RHEL 6 have 3.6.18. Are there still no security updates available for CentOS 6, or have I just managed to completely miss how to access them?

Hi all, After finding multiples answers to this question via google, but without making it work on my servers. Has anybody iSCSI Offload working on a Dell Server with Broadcom NICs ? My environment: I'm running CentOS 5.6 CR, on a Dell PowerEdge R710 with Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5709 conecting to an EMC CX4-120 SAN, via 2x Cisco 2960G-24TC-L switches. Hi, Well... I looked into the NICs config to make sure it's on. On BIOS I can see the 4 onboard NICs. On these I can chage from "no boot" / PXE / iSCSI boot. And the BIOS "detect" that this NICs are TOE & ISOE "capable". I had PXE on the first one and "no boot" on the other 3. From the NICs firmware menu I can see all the 8 NICs (including the 4 onboard), I can change the same options, no option to enable/disable iSCSI Offload, only iSCSI boot. I'm trying the instructions from: - http://www.open-iscsi.org/docs/README - http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/pdf/Online_Sto… - http://webpages.marshall.edu/~wolfe21/papers/rhel5-iscsi-HOWTO.pdf All of these say almost the same, and I can configure open-iscsi to access the EMC SAN using the two broadcom NICs using dm-multipath. But when I tryed to use the second MAC on the NIC (to activate iSCSI Offload) then I can't connect on the SAN. I can discovery it using the second MAC, but can't connect. I see what it says under Allow Access but I am not sure this is what I really want to do without know why it happened in the first place. What should I be looking at to understand what or why this has happened? Any help I would be most grateful for. I learned from Anne that if I boot to level 5, after I enter the username, can select Gnome or KDE. I note that the default is always Gnome. How can I make the default KDE? How can I get KDE with startx after booting to level 3? Thanks, Mike.

HBA port

Hi, I have a host which is connected to SAN via single Fibre channel HBA (qlogic). I have several LUNS assigned to this (sdc, sdd). I added another single port HBA to this host. I can now see two world wide names. Now the confusion is which world wide name does sdc and sdd is/was using. scsi_id -g -u -s /block/sdc only gives wwid but I need the wwn for sdc and sdd. Hello, Is it possible to use a mobile hot spot such as the one from Verizon to run a home network? Is there a way to do this without having to buy wireless cards? I was thinking maybe I would have to buy one for my centos machine which acts as my gateway but would like to have other devices wired. I have some questions about the "Continious Repo". Does the "Continious Repo" replace the Centos-Base/Updates repo? Is the "Continious Repo" in a standard place on the CentOS mirrors? Ie. can I just add another line to my rsync script to get this repo? It is not possible for me to just update directly off the net (I have a slow and unreliable network connection) If I cannot rsync from a secondary mirror, is it possible / allowed to rsync from mirror.centos.org? Besides of a lot of additional libraries, I needed a link ln -vfs /usr/lib64/mysql/libmysqlclient.so.16 /usr/lib64/libmysqlclient.so Are there reasons not to install with yum install mysql-devel ? new ssd to play with

I grabbed a new SSD M4-CT064M4SSD2 from Crucial. I am disappointed. I stuck the unit in an Atom machine (zotac) with CentOS 6 on the disk. It really doesn't "feel" faster than the previous 5400 RPM drive that was in it. The SSD is giving me (in the zotac running centos 6): hdparm -t /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 298 MB in 3.00 seconds = 99.30 MB/sec The Samsung 5400 RPM disk (in the zotac running Centos 6): hdparm -t /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 196 MB in 3.01 seconds = 65.02 MB/sec I'm not supper impressed at all. Sure the numbers say its "slightly" better but I don't "feel" it. I was expecting like really noticeable change in application load time or something - but not really. Just wondering... Is there something that has to be done to take advantage of the SSD performance? Thanks, jerry

rsync -x does not do the same on EL 5.6 and 5.7

Hi, We re doing backups of all filesystems to a dedicated server using "rsync -x". Now, the latest CentOS versions (5.7/6.x) come with rsync-3.0.6 instead of rsync-2.x. That's nice but unfortunately it doesn't do the same as 2.x in certain situations. The problem is with the -x option, which does not delete content under a mount point anymore. It was my impression that this is a bug, but I've been told it's a feature. The problem has shown up after I have added a new mount point on a server. I've added a BZ for RedHat and also posted to the rsync list as below: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=735981 https://lists.samba.org/archive/rsync/2011-September/026766.html Am I really the only one having problems with the new behaviour? It affects all user running "rsync -x". The problem only shows up after new mount points have been added to a subdirectory which is processed by rsync -x. dear All, I had a Centos 5.5 OS running for about 6 months used as a Xen VM server prfectly running 3 Virtual machines Its a Sun Blade server with 8 core Xeon Proceesor with 32 GB Ram couple of days back I added another 32 gb ram . The bios shows the added ram that is now it shows me 64 GB but the Centos OS just recognizes 32gb only the OS details are: Centos release 5.5 final Kernel 2.6.18-194.32.1.el5xen on an x86_64 now also running uname -a shows me Linux hypervisor2 2.6.18-194.32.1.el5xen #1 SMP Wed Jan 5 18:44:24 EST 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux shows that PAE support is not there I do believe that installing kernel PAE with yum should solve the problem but since the server is a online production server just wanted to verify if I would run into some problems apprecite your kinf help and suggestions regards sylvan

boot problem after disk change on raid1

big problem at boot

I restarted the a Centos 5.6 server tonight and I ran in this issue: I was able to boot. Then instead of a normal boot with graphical interface the system requested : 'Enter run level' 'INIT' I typed 5 then I got 'INIT: no more process left in this run level How can I recover from the situation? This is a production system back-up are made but left on the disk and transfer at the end of the day into an other system --- Michel Donais

Help with kickstart install

I am doing a kickstart install for CentOS 6.0 (x86_64 install) The error on screen is "fatal error occurred when install glibc package. Could indicate error with install media" When I looked at the /mnt/sysimage/root/install.log file I see Installing glibc-2.12.-1.7.el6.i686 error unpacking of archive failed on file /lib/ld-2.12.so;4e66d2ec cpio read failed bad file descriptor. (Note I am installing x86-64 but the error is on i686 file) This happens (same error) on 2 machines. AMD box with two 2T hard disks in each box for software RAID. I am using a PXE boot environment. Same environment I use for 5.6 (works fine). My kickstart file has the "repo" line commented out, so my local repo is not interfering. These CentOS 6 files were copied direct from DVD back on Jul 3. How do I find out what is wrong with the file and correct it? Selinux extra packages and compiled apps

Hey, I am in the process of trying (and convincing my colleagues) to learn/setup selinux as we switch to 6.0... Quick question: do I really "need" to install the setools/setroubleshoot packages or can I live without them? They want to install 80 packages (gnome stuff, gstreamer, gtk, tcl/tk...) and I would like to avoid installing all sort of graphical tools/libs on my lean servers. Can I just install setools-console by example? Is there a console only equivalent for setroubleshoot? If you know a must-have "selinux for dummies" like howto, apart from Redhat/Fedora doc or CentOS wiki, I am interested!Especially if it covers the case of many non-standard applications (the policy here is to use compiled apaches/php/mencoder/ffmpeg/..., all installed (with their data/logs) in a "/OURDIR" directory (but still use /var/run for the pids and a few others depending on the app), init.d scripts, logrotates, etc... Hi, i'm running CentOS 6.0 on my server and installed mrtg from the rpm-package mrtg-2.16.2 . I also installed the depending packages perl-IO-Socket-INET6 perl-Socket6 .... mrtg works fine with IPV4-Addresses. When i specify a Target by IPV6-Address (or hostname resolving to a V6-address) mrtg fails. I've got at least one user (it's *very* noticeable with her) whose system is spamming /var/log/messages, to the effect of "Another agent is running...\nFailed to allocate the agent. Exitting" (complete with misspelled exiting). In googling, I've seen someone just removing the package. What, if anything, would that break? Oh, right, CentOS 5.6, KDE 3.5.4-1 mark

My MB Intel embedded NIC blow up after a lightning (Mumbai get _real_ heavy mansoon rains inter alia). WINS server (nmbd) puzzle

My client Windows XP boxes are failing to register with my WINS server (running nmbd from Samba). I'm puzzled how to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Background: I'm setting up BackupPC to back up my Windows clients using rsync. I've installed cwRsync to the clients. BackupPC uses nmblookup to find the client's IP address given its Windows NETBIOS name. I'm distributing the WINS server address via DHCP and see it on the client using "ipconfig /all". I can run tcpdump on the server (filtering for this client and the NETBIOS port) and see the register/response sequence at UDP 137: MULTIHOMED REGISTRATION; REQUEST; UNICAST REGISTRATION; POSITIVE; RESPONSE; UNICAST REGISTRATION; REQUEST; UNICAST REGISTRATION; POSITIVE; RESPONSE; UNICAST If I signal the nmbd process with SIGHUP to make it dump its table to nmbd.log, I don't see client in the list. I do see the server and my Windows Active Directory server's records in the list, but no clients. nmblookup finds the client by broadcast (the client responds with the record) but nmblookup -U 127.0.0.1 says there's no record of it. (A query for the server's own record finds it, so I know the WINS service is at least working to that degree.) So why is nmbd not remembering client records?

Just looking for all the doc I can find on the subject. And maybe also for the hidden secret magic button that will auto-write the hundreds custom policies we will need... Creating a custom policy for an apache to use a non standard rootdir or port seems indeed easy with audit2allow... But several of our servers are more or less 10% standard (rpm based) and 90% custom, with dozens of apps/scripts listening on dozens non standard ports, sockets, accessing many files here and there...
