xendomains not starting at boot

On one of my xen hosts a virtual machine does not start at boot. I can see that xendomains gives an error: service xendomains start Starting auto Xen domains: fszeleNo handlers could be found for logger "xend" Error: Disk isn't accessible No handlers could be found for logger "xend" Error: Disk isn't accessible An error occured while creating domain fszele: Usage: xm create <ConfigFile> [options] [vars] Create a domain based on <ConfigFile>. Options: -h, --help Print this help. --help_config Print the available configuration variables (vars) for the configuration script. -q, --quiet Quiet. --path=PATH Search path for configuration scripts. The value of PATH is a colon-separated directory list. -f=FILE, --defconfig=FILE Use the given Python configuration script.The configuration script is loaded after arguments have been processed. Each command-line option sets a configuration variable named after its long option name, and these variables are placed in the environment of the script before it is loaded. Variables for options that may be repeated have list values. Other variables can be set using VAR=VAL on the command line. After the script is loaded, option values that were not set on the command line are replaced by the values set in the script. -F=FILE, --config=FILE Domain configuration to use (SXP). SXP is the underlying configuration format used by Xen. SXP configurations can be hand-written or generated from Python configuration scripts, using the -n (dryrun) option to print the configuration. -n, --dryrun Dry run - prints the resulting configuration in SXP but does not create the domain. -p, --paused Leave the domain paused after it is created. -c, --console_autoconnect Connect to the console after the domain is created. ! [failed] [FAILED] The actual command executed turns out to be: XMC=`xm create --quiet --defconfig $dom` where dom=/etc/xen/auto/fszele If I issue the command from the command line, the dom starts as expected. After some debugging on /etc/init.d/xendomains it turns out to work if I change this line: diff xendomains* 283c283 < XMC=$(xm create --quiet --defconfig $dom) --- > XMC=`xm create --quiet --defconfig $dom` or diff xendomains* 283c283 < XMC=`echo debug;xm create --quiet --defconfig $dom` --- > XMC=`xm create --quiet --defconfig $dom` So I fixed the problem using $() instead of back-ticks, but I like to understand what can be the root cause of this problem. Excerpt: Computerworld - Developers of the Apache open-source project today warned users of the popular Web server software that a denial-of-service (DoS) tool is circulating that exploits a bug in the program. The tool, called "Apache Killer," showed up last Friday in a post to the "Full Disclosure" security mailing list. selinux & iptables

In setting up my new CentOS 6 laptop, I replaced /etc/sysconfig/iptables with my own, very restrictive version. I then tried to restart the iptables daemon, but it reported that my new iptables was unreadable. On a guess, I disabled selinux, and my problem was solved. Later, I re-enabled selinux and on reboot, it had to go through a very long setup procedure. Is there something better I could have done when replacing iptables, so that I would not have to disable selinux? Thanks for your help. Mike.

6.0 Media problems

When I downloaded the iso for 6.0 install, K3b said the iso wouldn't fit on the blank DVD. So I downloaded and burned the LiveDVD. When I boot it, I get the blue splash screen (it says "CentOS... Community Enterprise OS on the bottom, logo to the right), but nothing else comes up. Hitting various keys does nothing. Downloaded and burned the Netinstall CD. It gives an error message that it can't install because the machine's CPU doesn't have pae. So is it the end of CentOS/RH for this machine? (I can't believe that. One of the great things about Linux has always been that it'll run on old hardware.) Or are these fixable problems? Or are there workarounds? resize2fs

Hi All: I am trying to resize a centos (5.2) VM drive. I use VMware and I have increased the size of the drive by 40G. I am running resize2fs on /dev/sdb1 (which is my root partition) but when I do I get this error: [root@centos ~]# resize2fs /dev/sdb1 120G resize2fs 1.39 (29-May-2006) The containing partition (or device) is only 19970795 (4k) blocks. You requested a new size of 31457280 blocks. How can I change the block size? I have also tried to use gparted live cd but it will not allow me to increase the size even though it sees 40g of unused space. I can only create a new partition. Any help would be appreciated. Installing 6.0 via USB

I'm using LiveUSB-Creator to create a bootable USB drive from CentOS-6.0-i386-netinstall.iso, and it gives me an error at startup: vesamenu.c32: Not a COM32R image I can hit tab and select "linux" and then it loads vmlinux and the initrd, says "Ready", and then just hangs. I'm not sure what's supposed to happen next. "vesa" and "rescue" do the same thing. The error message above apparently is caused by the syslinux in the ISO not matching the one that LiveUSB-Creator installs to boot from: <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=662557> The system has 512 MB of memory. Is that enough to boot the installer?

Postfix not set top start after upgrade

I noticed that after the lastest yum update on CentOS 5.6 we get Postfix 2.3.3, but the status of the postfix service (chkconfig --list postfix) changes to off. So after a reboot, it doesn't start automatically. I don't recall this ever happening before. Is this by design? A packaging error? Thanks, Micha

CentOS 6 IPv6: neighbor and restart network

Hallo, for using the ipv6 neighbor functions, I have to execute commands like ip -6 neigh add proxy 2001::211:d8ff:fe97:3273 dev eth0 to publish the ip of computers in the subnet. To execute them on reboot, I have included these commands in /etc/rc.d/rc.local Also after each restart of the network, I have to execute these commands too. So: how can I always execute /etc/rc.d/rc.local after service network restart My idea: Is it possible to rename /etc/network to /etc/network_original and to create a new shell script /etc/network to execute both? mail.centos.org : packets to strange ports

Reading a daily Logwatch report I noticed mail.centos.org sending packets to my outgoing mail server. The packets were blocked by IPtables. >From 72.26.200.202 - 18 packets To xx.xx.xx.xx - 18 packets Service: 33120 (tcp/33120) - 2 packets Service: 33906 (tcp/33906) - 4 packets Service: 39856 (tcp/39856) - 2 packets Service: 42049 (tcp/42049) - 2 packets Service: 54517 (tcp/54517) - 2 packets Service: 54792 (tcp/54792) - 4 packets Service: 58445 (tcp/58445) - 2 packets I thought all outgoing mail dialogue was conducted on port 25. The rpm package used to provide /etc/cron.daily/rpm /etc/logrotate.d/rpm I see /usr/lib/rpm/rpm.log and rpm.daily, which looks like they're intended for that purpose. Anyone have any idea why they're not in cron.daily and logrotate.d? mark

ImageMagick : Centos GUI ?

I accidentally discovered 'convert'. It is a command line utility. Changing a file from png to gif works like this convert aaa.png aaa.gif Amazingly simple, powerful and effective. I've since discovered it has an amazing list of options convert --help a manual file:///usr/share/doc/ImageMagick-6.2.8/www/convert.html and a web site http://www.imagemagick.org/ Does anyone have suggestions for a GUI which works for Centos 5.6 ? In production I run the command line program from PHP with 'exec'. Thank you, Paul. Currently automatically, rotating when necessary, downsizing photographs to 900 pixels wide (the software calculates the height) and labelling them with the file reference and photograph date - all in one quick operation. Mind boggling options, more than I've ever seen in similar software. Really amazed :-)

Could we have a centos-offtopic list please, so anything that would be considered OT can be posted there? That way it would keep anything considered as OT and list-noise off the main centos specific list. So each users then has the option of being on the main centos list, and/or the centos-offtopic list as well. That would keep the more experienced centos users happy, and allow us less experienced centos users to also learn from each other as well. I for one like to learn from such posts as the [CentOS] OT: Hardware upgrade help, as 64 bit is something I'm interested in learning about from other centos users that wish to contribute to threads like these. I think the centos-offtopic list should also be centos related, but not so strict postings as the current list is. CentOS 6: wpa_supplicant, unexpected behavior

On my CentOS 6: chkconfig --list wpa_supplicant shows off at all levels, which is confirmed by examination of: /etc/init.d/wpa_supplicant but ps -ef shows the process running. Furthermore, repeated cd /etc/init.d/ ./wpa_supplicant stop appears to succeed, but the process continues to run. These observations were made at levels 3 and 5. Is anyone else running heartbeat on CentOS 6 on x86_64? We have it installed, rpm -qi says it's from fedora, and /etc/init.d/heartbeat, after sourcing its shell environment, decides that it should look for the executables in /usr/lib/heartbeat. Unfortunately, where I found them, and where the package installed them, is in /usr/lib64/heartbeat. I haven't d/l the RH rpm, since I see that's in fedora, so I'm *assuming* they're they same. I just want to check, before I file a bug with upstream. mark

CentOS 6: bootup display

On my old CentOS 5, when it boots up (to level 3) it displays a line for each of the things it is starting as it does it. I found that quite useful. On my new CentOS 6, while it is booting up, it displays a useless CentOS trademark picture. Is there a way to get the old kind of display in CentOS 6? Thanks, Mike.

External vfat devices show uppercase filenames, how to change defaults for GNOME desktop?

Hello there! I've recently switched from Fedora 11 to CentOS6. Now my SD cards (automatically mounted on plug) contents is displayed as UPPERCASE filenames. I well see in mount's man that vfat's shortname option can be set to either lower, win95, winnt, mixed. OK, that's for entries in /etc/fstab or when mounting manually. I'd like to change the defaults for devices that automatically mount in GNOME.. is this possible? In gconf-editor, I don't see a storage/ subdir in system/.. Any hint? Regards, -- wwp

mounting an ext3 filesystem "-o ro"

Hi, I want to do something *bad* : to mount an already mounted ext3 partition. Mounting "-o bind" is not an option, this partition is mounted by different virtual machines. NFS is the right way to go, so I want another one :-) I have no problem mounting this partition read-only, but it seems that actually it is not really read-only. From /var/log/messages : Aug 29 11:26:43 xen02 kernel: EXT3-fs: INFO: recovery required on readonly filesystem. Aug 29 11:26:43 xen02 kernel: EXT3-fs: write access will be enabled during recovery. Aug 29 11:26:43 xen02 kernel: kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds Aug 29 11:26:43 xen02 kernel: EXT3-fs: recovery complete. Aug 29 11:26:43 xen02 kernel: EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. This recovery is probably triggered by the file /.autofsck, but I have not found how to get rid of this feature. Hello, Can anyone pls tell me if a ThinkServer TS130 with a E3-1225 Xeon processor is compatible with CentOS 6.0? I would like to upgrade from 5.6 but my hardware will not allow me to do so. I do not wish to buy something that is incompatible as I already have that now. The TS130 is replacing the TS200v which is RHEL 6.x certified. The TS130 has an Intel mobo and uses the C206 chipset. I do not know the model number for the mobo itself. I have spent the last 45 minutes on the phone with Lenovo and talked with 'Peggy' seven different times before being disconnected. TIA, Eddie

mysql authentication in proftpd

Hello list, I was able to get passive mode worked out. I'm really glad I was able to do this. I'm able to log into the ftp server, list directories, enter subdirectories and upload/download files. However my next task is to enable virtual users using mysql. I have installed proftpd-mysql and enabled the sql modules in the config. I found a good article on how to do this here: http://www.khoosys.net/single.htm?ipg=848 I set everything up according to this article, and authentication with the test user I have stored in the user table is failing. Cent OS 6 freezing up

I've been out of pocket for a while, so don't shoot me, if this has already been brought up. I'm having a problem with my desktop freezing up, and I'm running Cent OS 6. It seems to happen while I'm running firefox. I'm not sure if it's firefox, or the OS that's locking up. When it freezes up, nothing will respond, so I'm inclined to think it's the OS that's freezing up. Has anyone else been having this problem? Thanks Jim

vmxnet3 patch for CentOS6 kernel?

Hi, Could CentOS kernel keepers apply following patch on current kernel? http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/95785/ (Current as: 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.x86_64) With the patch applied, and a ".local" kernel built, I get 30% higher throughput with vmxnet3 in my IP routing node, than when using e1000 "card" at the same. Without the patch, the TCP flow over vmxnet3 driver on a _router_ node is abysmally slow. I am running a bunch of CentOS servers on VMware ESXi 4.1U1 hosts with multiple of VLANs. The best network performance is obtainable with vmxnet3 network driver in normal case. This driver includes so called LRO optimization, which boosts TCP flow network performance on end-nodes, but kills it on routers, thus the LRO mode needs to be disabled on a host doing routing in between network interfaces. The issue is a bug in vmxnet3 driver, which is not able to disable LRO mode when the kernel is telling the driver to do so. The patch for it applies on 2.6.32 kernels as well as 2.6.38/39 where it got applied to baseline. Could this be applied on stock CentOS kernel so that I could return on un-customized kernel use? On my laptop, I have not been able to get KDE to run; I always get gnome. I installed selecting KDE, and I tried yum groupinstall, which appeared to work, but I still get gnome running. BTW, I boot to level 3, and run startx. Thanks for your suggestions. Mike.

Problems with kickstart installation into a Virtualbox

Hi listers i tried to kickstart-install CentOS 6.0 64 in a Virtualbox (Virtualbox Version 4.12). I used a local CDROM with the net-install ISO on it to boot from. The ISO distribution file was provided on a server in the LAN as was the kickstart file. When starting the installation i aded the following to the kernel line of the grub menu: ks=http://install.mydomain.com/ks/centos.6.64.cfg After i had corrected some errors in the kickstart file, the installation started as expected. But it did not terminate as expected: after installing 198 of 671 packages, the installation halted with an error (i.e. after installing the package libutempter). In order to see what the problem was, i restarted from the CDROM in recovery mode, and after going into the half-way installed system, i saw in the anaconda log that about three quarters of the post-installation scripts of the packages had returned a warning. The warning code was 255. But the post-installation script of the package libutempter had returned an error with code 255, whereupon the installation stopped. I thought, OK, we will work around the libutempter package by selecting other program-groups in the kickstart-file. But i had no luck: the installation stopped then after the package MAKEDEV. Then i left off kickstart-installation and did a standard installation booting from the CDROM and getting the default packages from the server in the LAN. This worked fine. ----- When it came to test the installed packages i was always lucky except with the package fuse (fuse-2.8.3-1.el6.x86_64) which contains the binary /usr/bin/fusermount. This binary was installed without execute permission for everybody, so it could be invoked only by the userid root and members of the group fuse, which is not, what i had expected. suomi

When I do a "yum check-updates", the new *-release packages for 6.0 are listed, so I don't think I want to do a simply "yum update". Since el6 subversion package doesn't contain traditional SysV demonization script anymore I wonder how it is supposed to run svnserve from now on. 1) Should one write init script to be managed with service(8) on his own? 2) Or launch svnserve on demand via (x)inetd? 3) Or put svnserve command line in some rc-script? 4) Or maybe is ra_svn deployment scheme not supported in el6 at all and one should stick with Apache/mod_dav_svn? XFCE missing applets: weather and xfapplet

Audacious crashing (64bit)

Hello there, My first post here and even my first CentOS (after years of Fedora). Audacious is crashing at startup, here's the output: audacious: relocation error: /usr/lib64/audacious/Input/ffaudio.so: symbol av_register_protocol2, version LIBAVFORMAT_52 not defined in file libavformat.so.52 with link time reference Does anybody reproduce? Would this reveal a problem (or my misuse) with rpmfusion ffmpeg packages? UPS issues with PFC PSU

Just noticed that our new server has a newer 80+ efficiency 865W PSU with PFC. So apparenty our existing 1500VA (865W) APC Back-UPS is not safe to use anymore. We apparently need a pure sine wave UPS. http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8883 I found an affordable 1500VA UPS by CyberPower, model CP1500PFCLCD, which has a pure sine wave output. CentOS 6 KDE: remove default icons

On my newly installed CentOS 6 I am running KDE (I think; I selected it in the setup, but how would I know?). It has three default icons: Computer; Root's Home; Trash. I do not see them in /root/Desktop. How can I remove them? Thanks, Mike.

OT: Hardware upgrade help

I would like to upgrade my system to a 64 bit machine. I'd like to find a bare bones platform to build on. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money on this as it is a home system. I looked on the CentOS sponsor page but only saw hosting services. I haven't kept up with hardware in years so I'm dumber than dirt on what's out there. I would prefer a desktop so I can stack it. Don't think I need to do the Xeon as that would be overkill for a home user. This would be replacing my 'server' so I need PCI slots for an additional NIC and a 32 bit video capture card used for zoneminder. Not sure what PCI express is or if my cards would work in those slots. Yep, I'm running 8 yrs old machines, IBM NetVistas. :-( Any help or referal to a sponsor would be greatly appreciated. rsync CR upgrade

Hello Is anyone else having problems on 5.6 using the new rsync from the CR repo I have only managed to get rsync (called from the cli) working again after downgrading it to the previous 2.x release as the newer version was just spitting out the ssh usage information and failing. This server is stock i386 with just the CR as an extra repo. regards mike
