Cursor disappear when entering WINE application

dear guys, I'm installing CentOS 5.5 on my laptop. I also install WINE to run Microsoft Office and running well. The problem is, my cursor is always dissapear when I open MS Office application. When I point my cursor on window of the MS Office (example : MS Word), my cursor has gone! Have you ever had same experience like me? what's the solution? thanks,

compiling buoh comic reader for C-6

Hi all! I'm trying to build the buoh comic reader for centos 6 and my head is getting tired of repeated forceful contact with the wall. I built it on 5.6 without undue problems, but somehow 6.0 is beating me. (and no, the 5.6 binary doesn't work, at least not without a lot of futzing around, on 6.0. tried that first.) before I give gory details, has anyone already done this, from whom maybe I could get packages? or advice? it wants libsoup. fine, we got libsoup. but it seems to want version 2.2, while what we have comes in libsoup-2.28.*.rpm which seems to actually deliver /usr/lib/libsoup-2.4.xxxx.so. Go figure. The configure script refuses to deal with libsoup-2.4. so I look at what pkgconfig thinks the installed libsoup is, hack the configure script to look for that version and voila! ok, so now to do "make", which chokes on the first (only) file that includes any libsoup headers. it claims it can't find SoupURI, but it's "right there"!!. I've followed the chain of header file directories, heck, I've even compiled that one file with "-E" and verified that it expands to the right code. I can't see why it's complaining! can any of you see whatever the stupid thing is I'm doing wrong? Interactive PXE install

I've got a system (Supermicro P8SCT) that lacks a floppy or CD and it's old enough that it won't boot from a USB stick. Before I scrounge an optical drive to plug in, I thought perhaps I could install over the network, as I see "legacy LAN boot" in the BIOS menu. The guides for a LAN install I've found all want to do an automated kickstart install. Are there any guides that explain how to use eg. CentOS-6.0-i386-netinstall.iso for an interactive PXE installation? I think I understand the DHCP config and I've got tftpd installed on my CentOS 5 server and see the empty /tftpboot directory. I'm guessing I need to unpack some of the files in the iso image into /tftpboot in some special layout and add some files from /usr/lib/syslinux. What's not clear is what files in the image go where in the tftpboot system, and what the menu stanza should look like in the menu file.

Hello Team, We ship our own software own top of Centos 5.2 OS and install other applications and rpms on top of rpms available in 5.2 Centos. We are in the process of upgrading to a later version of openssh (5.8 version of openssh is already available), however the latest src.rpm version of openssh available on Centos site is still openssh-4.3p2-72.el5_6.3.src.rpm<http://oss.oracle.com/el5/SRPMS-updates/openssh-4.3p2-72.el5_6.3.src.rpm> Which is a 4.3 and not anything in 5.x. The reason we want to do it because there are many vulnerabilities in older versions of openssh. Few are listed below. -* A signal handler race condition in OpenSSH before Version 4.4 can be exploited to cause a crash, and possibly execute arbitrary code if GSSAPI **authentication is enabled, via unspecified vectors that lead to a double-free. (CVE-2006-50 **- A denial of service vulnerability exists in sshd in OpenSSH before Version 4.4, when using the SSH protocol Version 1, because it does not**properly handle duplicate incoming blocks. This can be exploited by a remote attacker to cause sshd to consume a large quantity of CPU resources. ** (CVE-2006-4924)* *OpenSSH is prone to a plain text recovery attack. The issue is in the SSH protocol specification itself and exists in Secure Shell (SSH) software**when used with CBC-mode ciphers.* *OpenSSH is prone to a vulnerability that allows attackers to hijack forwarded X connections.Successfully exploiting this issue may allow an attackerrun arbitrary shell commands* These are only some of the issues and they are fixed in versions 5.2 or later. We work with openssh src.rpm and we are interested in getting a version 5.2 or greater src.rpm from Centos. I tried compiling these rpms from openssh source, but was unsuccessful. I am going to try an experiment with e-mail aggregation where I expect to receive over 1 million e-mails a day from public lists. Can anyone shed some light on hard disk space (to retain this e-mail for long periods) and system specs to be able to handle the load? I am looking to buy a low end box, but that can hold lots of RAM and accomodate a fair number of HD's to store the e-mail while I try my experiments. Can anyone provide some realistic specs while maintaining a small budget? -Jason

PKA help

Hi All, I was able to create a public key for one of my servers that I log into frequently. Now I want to do this for a few more servers (where I use the same user id) and my user id on my laptop is the same as the servers. I also want to use PKA for other users accounts on the servers (for website editing and SFTP transfers) where my id on my laptop does NOT match the user on the server. I dont see at all how to make these changes as I already have an id_rsa and id_rsa.pub. So as an example: my user id on my laptop is: jtsm and the user id i want to log into the server as is: wwwdata Can anyone shed some light on how to setup multiple PKA on a single laptop with a single user account connecting as multiple user accounts to the server? -Jason

Two ftp clients? Why?

I had a problem wherein running a script with an embedded ftp call would work in the login shell during integration testing and then fail with an unrecognized option error in cron during acceptance testing. In solving this I discovered that RedHat, and therefore CentOS, ships with at least two ftp clients, /usr/bin/ftp ( which I thought I was using ) and /usr/kerberos/bin/ftp, which I actually was using. even though I had no inkling of its existence. My question is why? Why are there two ftp clients provided in a single distribution and why is the kerberos version effectively made the default whereas one might reasonably assume that anything in /usr/bin/ is the standard ( and by inference default ) ftp client for the distribution? If kerberos ftp is intended to be the default ftp client then why is it not in, or at least linked to from, /usr/bin? I just do not understand why these obscure distribution 'gotchas' are created in the first place, much less permitted to persist. -- *** E-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel *** James B. CentOS 6, Postfix Dovecot

I only have one Postfix server running at the moment and have some questions. On that install, I did Amavisd-new with ClamAV, SpamAssassin, Postfix and Dovecot. I know this is a bit off topic, but I'm really hoping for performance guidance. Is the added layer of complexity running Amavis worth the effort on a system with moderate mail flow? Or should I just go down the path of getting Clam and SA working with Postfix and be done with it? Whatever path I decide upon now will hopefully be the future for other system builds to come. I have about a dozen Sendmail installs running (which will eventually need to be moved over). Some of what I didn't like about those is Clam/AV and other checks occurred on both incoming and outgoing email. We pretty much don't have an outbound email virus or spam problem, so were getting a number of false positives due to DHCP and clients being assigned a dirty IP address from time to time. So yes, what's a good mailserver setup which hopefully stays as close to upstream as possible on 6.0? John Hinton

EL6: Hard Disk upgrade howto?

I have a tested copy of EL6 that I would like to duplicate to a number of similar servers, but can't seem to find a sane howto on the subject. TLDP's "Hard disk upgrade howto" is embarrassingly antiquated: when's the last time you saw LILO? What's the recommended procedure for doing an HDD copy/upgrade from one disk to another? Is there a nice, detailed howto that explains this in detail? My set up is pretty straight forward. My partitions are all set up as simple partitions, with UUID's in /etc/fstab. Sudo #includedir function ignored CentOS 6

I am unable to get the #includedir function to work with sudo. This works just fine on all my CentOS 5.6 servers, but on 6 it is being ignored. I have this line in the file /etc/sudoers.d/zabbix-puppet zabbix ALL=NOPASSWD: /var/lib/zabbix/bin/start_puppet However sudo still requires a password. If I put that same line into /etc/sudoers file , there is no password prompt. At the end of my sudoers file I have this line #includedir "/etc/sudoers.d" It seems that line is being ignored. The permissions on the file in that directory are 0440. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - Trey

I see in my overnight email spool: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726872 I am amused because this kind of request comes up time and time again with respect the package management system It is technically _possible_ to attain this kind of rollbacks, in some tightly controlled environments [something like cell phone tower control computer applications, where there are essentially NO end users in the environment and the computer is acting like an embedded controller], but in the general case with many diverse and randomly maintained packages, each with their own assumptions as to how to maintain their run-time environments, it is 'not gonna happen'' (TM) After deployment, User A will use postgresql or perhaps mysql to build a LAMP system. Updates will happen, and either pgsql or mysql will need to rebuild indices on the database store, because there has been a non-compatible bugfix, that is not backward compatible, or something to that effect. Because the database software authors have been burned, they have written documentation cautioning to take and test database backup dumps that may be reloaded, and and indeed also conversion testing scripts that actually attempt to do it 'behind the scenes'. The scripts are robust and will carp and bail if they run out of space, or otherwise fail other sanity checks. But there is a design decision: is one 'polite' as to filesystem use and pollution, and NOT leave that intermediate dump behind; or is one paranoid and save and age several backups, both for this conversion and generally, because you (the database software author) have been berated by your use community for THEIR failure not to read the documentation and to heed the warning to take and test backups [Those reading this will note certain parallels to rants by low-formality 'admins' who appear here from time to time -- just a random co-incidence, I am sure] Then RPM has the reasonable design feature, quite intentionally, of providing access to the full, Turing complete which a shell prompt offers. Anconda does as well. THAT can provide for dynamic repartitioning, filesystem type conversions, and so on ... How does one 'roll back' from such one-way operations? The answer of course, is one cannot without 'out of the installation' backups So I am amused that a person sees the RPM hammer, and thinks every problem looks like a nail, rather than, say, TESTING all variants, so there IS NO NEED for such a 'roll-back' capability; or running virtual instances so a 'prior backup' can be taken, the upgrade performed, and if problems show up -- no problem, just start the prior backup and the undesired 'upgrade' does not hurt at all -- Russ herrold

No debuginfo for Centos 6?

Hi, I'm trying to use oprofile to debug a problem with idle virtual machines eating 10% cpu but apparently the debuginfo packages for Centos 6 do not exist and so I cannot get any useful information from the kernel. Is there some way to at least get the kernel-debuginfo from somewhere? Regards, Dennis

RedHat to CentOS packages

Dear all, We're trying to use Nessus to monitor our system and we're having a hard time mapping the package versions from RedHat to CentOS in order to be able to report against CVE (vulnerability reports). After some research, we think that the mapping is as follows (using HTTPD as the example): CentOS httd-2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3 is equivalent to RedHat httpd-2.2.3-43.el5_5.3 So, it looks like CentOS replaces "_$MINOR_RELEASE" (in this case "_5") with ".centos" . Is this a fair assumption or are there other rules we are missing? Is this documented anywhere? Thanks Gabriel Tabares

Iptables - flooding console

Hi, We are trying to track some specific rules using LOG as target. Everything is working well but the problem is that iptables is flooding the console with LOG messages. We tried --log level 4 on iptables rules but it didn't work. We fixed the problem changing KLOGD_OPTIONS value in /etc/sysconfig/syslog to: KLOG_OPTIONS="-c 4" Is it the best option or we are missing something? Thanks in advance

high performance open source DHCP solution?

The free DHCP solution, ISC, seems to be having scaling issues (i.e. handling only about 200 DHCPDISCOVER and 20 DHCPRENEW requests), and I was wondering if anyone had any open source suggestions of solutions that could scale much better? (Ideally, I could find a free version of a solution like Nominum, but I know that's asking for much.) Anyone have any suggestions? -- Also on LinkedIn? Intel HD graphics & CentOS 6: Error inserting i915

I installed CentOS 6 to Acer 7750 laptop, which has Intel Sandybridge CPU ( i5-2410M) with integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000. By default X won't use intel driver for graphics, but vesa instead, which limits the resolution to 1024x768. I tried to force the use of intel driver by writing a xorg.cof file, but then X doesn't start at all. I updated libdrm and xorg-x11-drv-intel from elrepo. This intel driver 2.15 is newer than in Fedora 15 Live CD, and with it the graphics work properly. The problem seems to be related with i915 kernel module: (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" FATAL: Error inserting i915 (/lib/modules/2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.x86_64/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko): No such device (EE) No devices detected. I've tried kernels from CentOS Base repo, and CentOS-Plus repo too, no difference. I found a similar old bugzilla entry: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=495524 Somewhere (don't find the source any more) I saw that i915 would need intel_agp module, and that would be the problem. This goes a little bit beyond my knowledge level. Maybe this has been fixed somewhere about a year ago: https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/120293/ But is this patch something that is still missing from latest CentOS kernels? Hi folks, I hope this is the right mailing list to ask since on the repoforge website there is no list or contact information. I have a problem with updating the perl-Nagios-Plugin package. I have installed perl-Nagios-Plugin-0.33-1.el6.rf.noarch, and running yum update leads to: > Error: Package: perl-Nagios-Plugin-0.35-1.el6.rf.noarch (rpmforge) > Requires: /usr/local/bin/perl > You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem > You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest > I do not see how to get this fixed; enabling rpmforge-extras and rpmforge-testing did not work (no /usr/local/bin/perl there), and symlinking /usr/local/bin/perl to stanard perl did not work either. I run into this problem on CentOS5 and 6, the latter both in 32bit and 64bit. And I do not find any hint on Google. Am I the only one to use this package? :-) Any hint or help is appreciated. Dirk

Hi list, I am having a debate with one of my clients where I administer their domain and storage server but the website is hosted by godaddy. thus www.mydomain.org goes to one of godaddy's servers but the mydomain.org and mail.mydomain.org and ns1.mydomain.org all go elsewhere. My website designer has been convinced by the godaddy web design team that we should <quote> Again, the standard practice in the industry is for name.org and www.name.org to be "tied" together. The primary domain is mydomain.org and you have it while the church's web site is using the sub domain, www.mydomain.org. I have been on the phone with tech support and they say that out of close to 1 million web site hosting customers, NOBODY purposely separates the two. We will run into these issues every time someone tries to create a form, new navigation and potentially new pages, according to Godaddy. PLEASE create a sub-domain for your server that is not mydomain.org and, transfer mydomain.org into the new godaddy account we just set up for the new web site. </quote> I have never heard this before, and have not had any problems with any other clients until this client hooked up with godaddy for their website. Anyone out there that can shed some light on this? Do most domains keep the Top Level Domain (TLD) the same as the www.TLD? TIA Rob

offline root lvm resize

So here goes... First some back story -Centos 5 with latest updates as of yesterday. kernel is 2.6.18-238.19.1.el5 -setup is raid 1 for /boot and lvm over raid6 for everything else - The / partition (lvm "RootVol") had run out of room... (100% full, things where falling appart...) I resized the root volume (from 20GiB to 50GiB). This was done from a fedora 15 livecd, seemed like a better idea than doing it on a live system at the time.... After the resize the content of all the lvs could be mounted and all data was still there (all this from within fedora). The problem is when i try to reboot into centos as the root volume cannot be found. boot message goes as follows ... No Volume groups found Volume Group "RaidVolGrp" not found ... Kernel panic the UUID's have not changed, but there is definitely a missing link, probably something dumb... cron jobs not running

I'm attempting to find out why this cron job isn't running. the host is centos 5.6 on i386 just so you know. 0 3 * * * /bin/alldb > /home/bluethundr/backupdb/alldb-$(date +%Y%m%d%H%S).sql The job is meant to backup all the databases on a mysql server every day at 3 am. I have checked the backup directory and nothing is showing up for those days. hi guys, Just a quick note about adding [SOLVED] tags to the Subject lines on email lists : Dont do it, it does not help and makes no difference to the content - yet, it breaks threading of responses. Unline web forums, email clients will try and thread using the Subject and in-reply-to headers to retain thread sanity. So dont please dont break that, its quite a key part of the whole mailing lists experience for everyone. I understand that some people seem to think that adding that makes it easier to later search on google. And if thats the case, adding the SOLVED word in your actual email body would do just as well, Add it high up the body content for even better effect. - KB

Currently I have this network: 10.1.16.0/22. 10.1.16.0-10.16.17.254 are DHCP managed 10.1.18.0-10.1.19.254 are statically assigned If I need to expand it to: 10.1.16.0/20 1. What is the best way to do it with minimal network disruption? 2. If I keep some machine with 22 subnet mask, will it still be able to talk to the other machines in it's range? Thank you. Fajar.

Looking for ntop alternative

Hi, Can anyone please recomment an ntop alternative for me, which is more stable as well? I need to monitor all connections to and from a CentOS 5 server and ntop does it fairly well, but seems to crash at random times, and thus looses all the date prior to the crash. Hi all, I am looking at processes in centos 6. How do I stop gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor from starting. I tried searching in gconf-edit for it but did not find anything. I have ran these commands and rebooted. (I verified they are unchecked now also) gconftool-2 -t bool --list-type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount false gconftool-2 -t bool --list-type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount_open false but gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor is still running. I see that SquirrelMail is gone from 6. Is there a package in here somewhere that is a webmail system? Otherwise, I suppose it lives in one of the repos like sourceforge. I just wanted to check if something new existed before doing that. John

Hey, I solved my "The installation source given by device ['sdb2'] could not be found". Apparently ignoredisk is so strong it not only ignores the disks to be partitioned but also the disks holding the installation source... Now I ran into: In interactive step cleardiskssel, can't continue In anaconda.log I saw: step installtype does not exist step confirminstall does not exist step complete does not exist (14 times) Then it seem to do the step setuptime correctly. And then it goes into stepcleardiskssel and fails.
