Hi all, I am running 5.4 After running sudo yum clean all sudo yum update We got it upgraded to 5.6 cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 5.6 (Final) So, how can I get it my CentOS from 5.6 to 6.0? CentOS 6 x86_64 DVD doesn't boot

Hi Everyone, I downloaded the CentOS 6 x86_64 DVD ISOs and burned the first image to a rewritable DVD. When I tried to boot my new home server off it, it didn't, and then this was printed to the screen: ETCDisolinux: Found something at drive = EF No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! boot: The same disc works fine in my 4 year old HP laptop, and when installing CentOS 6 as a KVM. I've found one post from a Fedora 14 user that was having the exact same problem, but no one replied to him. Other articles, posts etc. around the net reference something different for the "EF" part. Does anyone know what's going on? I've never seen this problem before. Hi, I have HP DL 180 G6 2U Rack Server with HP Smart Array Controller Card B110i Onboard SATA Controller Chipset. This server has 4 * 500 GB SATA HDD have configured RAID 1+0 and it shows Single Logical Drive of 940 GB Hard Disk in the RAID BIOS. Have created driver diskette using dd command to enable this controller card to the CentOS 5.6 x86_64 arch and it shows HP LOGICAL VOLUME of size 940 GB by the Anaconda installer to load CentOS 5.6 on these server. Below are the steps to enable driver diskette from HP (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?sw…) gunzip hpahcisr-1.2.6-7.rhel5.x86_64.dd.gz dd if=hpahcisr-1.2.6-7.rhel5.x86_64.dd of=/dev/sdb (USB Flash Drive) CentOS 5.6 Installation Procedure :- Boot up the System using DVD containing CentOS 5.6 and type linux dd blacklist=ahci and then it asks for load driver diskette and then point it to the USB Flash Drive which contains the SATA Controller driver image. The driver gets loaded during the installation and after OS Installation is complete and then reboot it fails and says "Error 21: Selected disk does not exist" and when i edit grub grub> root (hd0,0) and press b to boot it works fine and later I get the below message on the Console with Kernel Panic. Mounting root filesystem. mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root' Setting up other filesystems. Setting up new root fs setuproot: moving /dev failed: No such file or directory no fstab.sys, mounting internal defaults setuproot: error mounting /proc: No such file or directory setuproot: error mounting /sys: No such file or directory Switching to new root and running init. unmounting old /dev unmounting old /proc unmounting old /sys switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! About I386 not fitting on one DVD

Just a thought If the I386 (or i686, never could figure out why the name change) disk doesn't quite fit on the DVD+, and needs a DVD-, this might put some folks at an inconvenience. I wonder if the difference between fitting and not fitting is small enough, so that some amount of pruning might make it fit on the DVD+R image. Some ways to prune could be: a) Create two versions of the DVD, one with all the non-ideographic languages included, and one with the ideographic languares and a subset of the alphabet languages (English, German, French, ...) b) Find some less used but large package which presumes internet access. It could be downloaded with YUM c) Tackle the code bloat (oh yah, sure) David

Cannot install through (U)EFI

Hi all, I've a little problem with CentOS 6 and EFI on Dell Poweredge R510... My Logical disk (hardware raid) is a little bit greated than 9TB, so i must use EFI in order to see the whole disk space and boot on it, but my box don't want to boot on CentOS 6 x86_64 Install DVD when i'm in EFI boot mode. someone has successfully installed CentOS 6 x86_64 in EFI mode ? Anyone else notice that /usr/libexec/bacula/make_catalog_backup.pl runs a "dbcheck -B" which doesn't seem to exist in the version of dbcheck shipped with it? # strings /usr/sbin/dbcheck |grep -i print sprintf vfprintf snprintf -dt print timestamp in debug output -? print this message %d block read errors not printed. redhat-release file on C6

Curious as to why redhat-release says "CentOS Linux release" in C6, but on C5 it merely says 'CentOS release". This causes programs that try to parse the file (eg Xen Tools) to fail 'cos it can't parse properly. Yeah, it can be worked around, but it seems an unnecessary change :-( -- rgds Stephen

CentOS-6 firewall how to open a port

I'm running CentOS-6 on an HP MicroServer (since this morning) and I'd like to open an non-standard port, for use on a laptop attached to the internet through the server. Do I have to explicitly add an iptables rule? If so, and I want to open (say) udp port 500 , what command should I give? I've always used shorewall in the past, and will probably do so now if the default firewall is difficult to use. But I thought I would try it first as an experiment. My recollection is that in old versions of CentOS one could non-standard ports through system-config-firewall ; but it seems that now this can only be used for standard ports; I looked at <http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Network/IPTables> but didn't find it very enlightening. Hello, This is a rather strange problem. I am using the i386 netinstall CD to boot and do a URL (HTTP) install since my machine only has CD drive and can't boot from USB either. During the install, the installer was looking for package authconfig- gtk-6.1.9-1.fc14.i686.rpm and claims that it's missing. I checked the RPMs under packages, and for sure it wasn't there. But look at the package name. Why is the installer asking for .fc14. package ? authconfig-gtk-6.1.4-6.el6.i686.rpm exists instead, but I don't understand why the .fc14. package was requested. Anyone else sees this ? My install, of course, did not succeed. Thanks AC

SQUID Logrotate

Hi all, i have problem, after uprade CentOS 5.5 to 5.6, Logrotate don't work on two proxy servers. Hi, I am Ken.. I am trying to add dud(driver update disk) to centos5.6 using network method, I can successfully add dud to centos5.6 using http and ftp method, but fail when using nfs method. However those all three methods are officially supported in the centos5.6. svnserve with encryption on CentOS

Hello, I've got a CentOS box that i'm wanting to set up svnserve on. I've read much, and am confused. Does svnserve support data encryption and also restricting users from specific repositories? I'm thinking of a single repo structure under /var/svn-repos and I've got two users user1 and user2, each should have access to their own projects in this case user1 can access project1 and user2 can access project2, but neither should be allowed to access the others. My second issue is I don't want to have a access path like /var/svn-repos/project1 for instance. I've read the -r root option which I would set to: -r /var/svn-repos would settle this, but am not sure where to set that option so it's picked up. Thanks. Dave.

Celebrating Centos 6.0 Day World-wide

Saturday, 9 July 2011 in England. This afternoon I was very enthusiastically telling staff in a large US owned stationary and computers chain store (with often too high prices), Staples, about the joys and benefits of using Linux, specifically Centos, over M$ Windoze. May I suggest that all us very grateful users of Centos make 6 copies of Centos 6.0 (either i386 or/and X64) and hand then out to friends, colleagues or strangers (unknown members of the public) who might be interested in trying Centos ? A modification of this idea could be to distribute "Live" versions of Centos that can run without altering a computer's hard disk(s). Centos is great - and I should have started using it years ago - so too is the utterly commendable efforts of the gallant and hard working volunteers who made this excellent experience possible for us to enjoy. Spreading the metaphorical 'word' in the form of a give-away CD or DVD will undoubtedly promote Centos and liberate more computer users from the costly and ghastly tyranny of M$ Windoze. In England one can not purchase a new computer from a chain store without first paying the compulsory Windoze tax even if one has no intention of using Micro$oft. Lets be proud of others world-wide achievement in making Centos 6.0 available to us and let us celibate their inspirational achievement by giving away some easy-to-duplicate LIVE CDs or a DVD set (2 disks) to those who would like to try Centos. Since the new version is Centos 6 then give away a minimum of 6 copies of a LIVE CD or 6 copies of a complete i386 or X64 distribution. -- With best regards, Paul. HP Network Printer Issue - Resend

I sent the following message back in June, but I must have missed the reply: I'm attempting to install and configure HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) software on my CentOS 5.3 x86_64 system without success. I've got a HP Officejet Pro 8500 multi-function printer connected via ethernet. I'm getting a message saying that it cannot locate the libcups module in the /usr/lib64 and /usr/lib directories. However, I can locate then correct modules using the find command. I can print to this printer using multiple versions of Fedora and multiple versions of Windows. Does anyone have any suggestions why it is not working? Has anyone seen an issue like this? I'm continuing to run CentOS 5.3 because VMware Server 2.02 works well there. And I haven't found a tutorial or 'How To' showing how to move to kernel based virtualization (KVM) on the later versions of CentOS. TIA Gene

Unhandled Exception during Install

Hello, I am trying to do an NFS install of CentOS 6 on a fairly old / generic machine AMD Athlon XP 1700. I use the CentOS-6.0-i386-netinstall.iso burned to a CD to boot the installation. Only / partition and swap (2 partition) is set on the primary IDE harddrive. I have a PCI SATA card with a 2TB SATA drive on the machine that I wanted to use as /home (which I set during the install). The CentOS iso image is host on a Fedora machine on the LAN. After the part where "Transferring Install Image to Hard Drive", I get Unhandled Exception box, and I could only "Save", "Debug" or "Exit". The install failed. I tried the install several time, and I also tried unplugging the SATA HD, thinking that it may caused the problem. But the problem is still there. So even for the most basic install (on IDE harddrive) with Minimal install it doesn't work. I saved the error log from the "unhandled exception"; it's 1.5MB XML file. Not sure where / how I can post this or if this may be useful for someone to look at. Any suggestion or help with this would be appreciated. Thanks AC

CentOS-6 dhcpd

I've installed CentOS-6 on my server (in parallel to CentOS-5.6) and now I'm trying to set up dhcpd. I'm not sure if there has been a change in dhcpd under CentOS-6, but I'm getting the dreaded message "Not configured to listen on any interfaces!" when I "sudo service dhcpd restart". I realise now that I have never known how the connection between interface (eth0 and eth1, in my case) and network (192.168.1.0 and 192.168.2.0, in my case) is established. I have DHCPDARGS=eth1 in /etc/sysconfig/dhcpd but evidently I need to say something more somewhere. Can one actually specify the interface in /etc/dhcpd.conf and if so how? ssh after failing fsck?

Is there any way to configure things so sshd starts even if a filesystem mentioned in fstab has errors that fail the automatic fsck at boot? Due to some power issues I'm sitting at work for a long fsck to complete - or more likely fail, so I can run it manually like it will tell me on the console. problems with burning i386 centos 6 dvd

Hey guys, Thanks a lot for the CentOS 6 distro. I am having trouble burning the i386 dvds. I tried on a RHEL 6 deskop and also a CentOS 5 laptop. The command I am running on both systems is this: growisofs -dvd-compat -speed=4 -Z /dev/sr0=/home/gsgatlin/CentOS-6.0-i386-bin-DVD/CentOS-6.0-i386-bin-DVD.iso The error I am seeing is: :-( /dev/sr0: 2295104 blocks are free, 2297586 to be written! (Yes it puts a sad face on the command line) The DVD says DVD +R on it if that matters. I was able to burn the 64 bit dvd's ok with similar commands. (both #1 and #2) Any idea what I am doing wrong? CentOS5/6 Dual Boot

Alle, We currently have a CentOS 5.6 x86-64 server running using about 70G of a 500GB hardware raid partition. We'd like to install 6.0 alongside this installation in a dual boot configuration. We tried to install using the "Use Free Space" installation option, but the installer did not see the 475G of unused space. Is there any good way to do this, or is it even feasible? I have a number of programs I wrote on Centos 5 (x86_64) and for one of the programs I do ldd programX linux-vdso.so.1 => (0x00007fff2cb86000) libpthread.so.0 => /lib64/libpthread.so.0 (0x0000003528600000) libm.so.6 => /lib64/libm.so.6 (0x0000003527e00000) libxml2.so.2 => /usr/lib64/libxml2.so.2 (0x0000003531400000) libz.so.1 => /usr/lib64/libz.so.1 (0x0000003528a00000) libc.so.6 => /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x0000003527a00000) /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x0000003527600000) libdl.so.2 => /lib64/libdl.so.2 (0x0000003528200000) On C6 I do the same thing and the numbers in (Y) might change but everything else is the same for libraries. Is it safe to assume then that if I switch to C6 and recompile my program and then put the C6 version on all my C5 systems (updates that kind of thing) that everything will be compatible and run just fine. Installing 64bit CentOS6 only installs x86_64 and noarch RPMS - however, I have a number of legacy 32bit apps that require a number of 32bit RPMS to be installed. Does anyone know how to get the installer to install the 32bit versions of 64bit RPMS? i.e. in the way it does for CentOS5. Thanks James Pearson

amd64_edac: probe of 0000:00:18.2 failed with error -22 Logwatch shows this error on several machines - laptop and desktops - all running C 5.6. It never appears on the data centre servers. I have 'googled' but can not identify what error 22 is. One German posting suggests it is related to the Error Correction Code (ECC) of RAM. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECC_memory suggests the problem may be caused by laptops and desktops without a ECC facility on their motherboards. autofs problem on CentOS6

I'm trying to use autofs with Active Directory. This works: autofs_ldap_auth.conf: <autofs_ldap_sasl_conf usetls="yes" tlsrequired="yes" authrequired="yes" clientprinc="nfs/myhost@MYDOMAIN" /> /etc/sysconfig/autofs: LDAP_URI="ldap://domaincontroller1 ldap://domaincontroller2" This also works if I replace the auth with a DIGEST-MD5 from GSSAPI (which gets used by default). Good so far. However, I don't want to explicitly list the domain controllers. Discovering them via SRV records fails to work (even though logging clearly shows it's discovered the correct records). Going via a round-robin DNS target for th LDAP_URI also fails, as I think autofs expects the server to think of itself under the round-robin name, rather than its primary name, which breaks both DIGEST and GSSAPI. Anyone got any pointers on how to make this work, or is just a bug that I should track down? jh

use of MAILTO variable in crontab

I want to do something like this: 30 2 * * * MAILTO=testaddr(a)harte-lyne.ca; echo "this should be mailed" I have searched extensively and from what I have read I believe that this should work. But evidently I misapprehend how cron and MAILTO is supposed to work as my example does not cause any mail to be sent as far as I can determine from maillog. Problem with net-install

Folks I tried the net-install, because my computer has no DVD, only a CD. The system has a USB connected keyboard, and it works just fine accessing the built-in BIOS. However, when I booted the netinstall CD, the initial screen which asks for the type of installation did not respond to the keyboard. I was therefore forced to wait the 30-seconds for the timeout, at which point the install screen showed up and the keyboard worked. I fear that the net-install image may not support USB keyboards, which if so, is unfortunate. The alternate of burning multiple CDs (as I've done with earlier versions) appears unavailable in CENTOS 6. Furthermore, I was never given the choice of using a GUI or text install; I guess the old display device isn't supported in the install system. Not being given any choices of packages during the install (a fact noted in the release notes) resulted, however, a system where a lot of the expected utility programs weren't there.: a) "yum" worked b) No SSH client appeared to exist, nor did YUM know about it. c) Several useful utilities were not there, so they had to be installed via yum. As a result, the process of bringing this system to a usable state consisted of: 1) Burn net-install CD 2) Answer the few questions. 3) For the net-install site, use http://mirror.centos.org/centos/6.0/os/i386 4) When it boots, use yum: yum install ftp perl unzip 5) COMMENT: One of the nice properties of Linux has been that it can be installed and run on "old" hardware. Chroot issue with username to uid

I'm setting up a chroot environment on a shared web server to allow users to modify their web roots within a secure chroot, but am having a problem. Right now when I log in with test accounts I get this... Is anyone using the Orca screenreader?

Orca is a daemon written in Python and C which presents the contents of a Gnome screen to a blind person in speech or braille. It is on the CentOS 5.6 disks. Has anyone on this list used it? If so, what was your experience? I am developing the BrailleBlaster tactile literacy application. Since I am both blind and deaf, I will be using a braille display. OT: USB3 drive occasionally not detected

Hi Folks, CentOS 5.5 x86_64 Asrock-Board with 2 USB3 plugs. Normally USB3-drive is detected. But occasionaly after "umount" next time this drive or other ones will not be detected. I have to boot the PC - than it works - till next unrecognition. On USB2 plugs all works correct. No messages in /var/log/messages nor dmesg. What happens here? Board failure - or other reasons? Some hints welcome. Timothy

php-5.3.6 fails on CentOS 5.6 64 bit

Hello all, # I am quite new to 64 bit Linux I am trying to build php-5.3.6 on CentOS 5.6, 64 bit. When I run ./configure under php-5.3.6, I get the following error: ----- Error ----- If configure fails try --with-jpeg-dir=<DIR> configure: error: libpng.(a|so) not found. ----- Error ----- Though libpng-devel and libjpeg-devel (both i386 and x64 rpms) are installed, it seems that configure could not find them. (I guess) I've fixed the errors by: 1. Adding /usr/lib64 to /etc/so.ld.conf, and 2. Specify jpeg lib dir that configure has to look: ./configure --with-jpeg-dir=/usr So, php 5.3.6 did compile fine but, curiously, I want to ask: 3. Why /usr/lib64 is not in ldconfig by default? 4. Gnome System Monitor crashes on Centos 6 x86_64

Has anyone else had this problem? I tried it as a brand new username and it happens every time. CentOS 6 DVD install "Unable to read group information from repositories"

Tried my first CentOS 6 install on a system currently running 5.6. My attempt was not an upgrade, but a full re-format. I have verified the checksums of the ISO and did the pre-install disk verify and everything checked out. However after the screen for setting up the bootloader I get the following error "Unable to read group information from repositories. This is a problem with the generation of your install tree" With my only options being "Exit Install" and "Retry", but of course "Retry" continues to fail with the same message. Basically I chose the first option in the menu for the DVD, install / upgrade, went through all the settings, did a custom layout for partitioning. I basically told the installer to re-format my ext3 partitions to ext4 and set the mount points for / , /boot and swap. Then after selecting "Next" from the bootloader configuration is when I get the above error. Thanks - Trey

6.0 text-mode installer broken?

(I'm doing tests in a VirtualBox instance, so take this with a grain of salt.) If you give the VM only 512 MB of RAM, the text-mode installer kicks in. It does not prompt you to configure anything related to the network or hostname. The system boots up without a network interface configured. Also, it won't let you choose the install mode, I guess it defaults to Minimal (which is fine by me, but still it's a bug). If you give the VM 768 MB of RAM, the GUI installer is launched, and this one allows you to configure the hostname, the networking details, and choose the install mode. We'll ignore that the group name for KDE changed, and so, since we had it on the same line as X, neither was installed. However, more of an annoyance: to get nfs working, I had to install: pam-krb5 ncsd then fix /etc/init.d/autofs (when I did a service restart, it told me automount was running, and did not stop it), then after some research, found I had to manually start rpcbind, *then* I could run nfslock. Any comments, folks? The admin I work with said he does not believe he had to do some of that with RHEL 6. mark "he also says that I shouldn't discount the possibility that he's crazy"

Installing OS on Flash Drive on Server

Hi All, On my gateway server I'm Installing CentOS on a flashdrive. is that a bad idea? the server keep hang, I can ping the server from the LAN and from the internet, the internet connection from LAN to internet is OK but another service is down, ssh, VPN (PPTPD) and another service. Even the console is unresponsive so I have to reset the server. Last time when I still can do SSH to server the / drive is mounted read only, when I try to remount rw it said error write protected but the flash drive itself have no write protection. Problem with AT&T VPN

I'm running a CentOS-5.6 server, which in general runs perfectly. My setting is possibly a little unusual: ADSL -> Billion 5200S RC modem/router -> CentOS-5.6 HP MicroServer -> Linksys WRT54GL router . My daughter is just visiting me, and she has to contact her job using AT&T VPN on her laptop under Windows XP. Unfortunately this does not work on my system when connected to the Linksys router by WiFi or ethernet. More precisely, the IBM Lotus "sametime" application does not work, and she cannot access the IBM Intranet homepage which she needs to use company tools and applications. C6: Suspend on laptop close doesn't work

Hello, I've been running Fedora on my Lenovo X61s laptop for many (Fedora) generations. Fedora 15, however, was not my cup of tea, so I've decided to wipe out Fedora, and do a clean install of CentOS 6 (x86_64). Everything works OK, except that the laptop does not suspend when I close the lid. I've checked the settings in "Power Management", and it is set to suspend when the lit is closed, with or without AC power. This has always worked in Fedora. PackageKit via ssh

Hi, I'm trying to use gnome PackageKit (gpk-application) on a centos 6 x86_64 system. When I am sitting at the machine it works ok, but most of the time I am accessing that C6 system via ssh from my centos 5 desktop. In this scenario gpk-application starts ok, lists packages, resolves deps, etc... but then it doesn't pop up the box asking for the root password, and aborts with a message "Failed to obtain authentication". I know I can use yum, but occasionally I like using a GUI to browse through available packages. Is there any way to use PackageKit remotely via ssh? Thanks

Effecting CentOS change

CentOS has a clear mission. It's the first paragraph on the centos.org home page: CentOS is an Enterprise-class Linux Distribution derived from sources freely provided to the public by a prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor. CentOS conforms fully with the upstream vendors redistribution policy and aims to be 100% binary compatible. (CentOS mainly changes packages to remove upstream vendor branding and artwork.) CentOS is free. Discussions about the packages and utilities that are or aren't included in CentOS (the recent discussion of system-config-bind comes to mind, but it's not the only example) should re-read the CentOS mission. Anyone wanting change in that regard should, imo, purchase a license from the prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor and provide feedback as a paying customer. Said vendor may or may not heed those suggestions, but that is the only effective way to change the CentOS utility/package list. So there is longer an xorg.conf file in centos 6. Where is that stored now? When I am running host C5 and guest C6 using kvm all I can get is 800x600. They System->Preferences->Display app only has "detect monitor". There is no LCD selection anymore that would then allow me to select something higher than 800x600. I tried a "-g" option for qemu-system-x86_64 -g WxH[xDEPTH] Set the initial graphical resolution and depth But that does now work So how do increase my kvm screen size with C5 host and C6 guest, and where or how is X controlled now with no xorg.conf ? Hello all, I am running CentOS 5.6 64 bit. When running "yum -y install ncurses-devel", I expect that only ncurses 64 bit version will be installed. However, actually both i386 and x64 are installed, that made me unhappy :) ncurses-devel-5.5-24.20060715.i386.rpm ncurses-devel-5.5-24.20060715.x86_64.rpm Is there anything worng here?
