Problem with AT&T VPN

I'm running a CentOS-5.6 server, which in general runs perfectly. My setting is possibly a little unusual: ADSL -> Billion 5200S RC modem/router -> CentOS-5.6 HP MicroServer -> Linksys WRT54GL router . My daughter is just visiting me, and she has to contact her job using AT&T VPN on her laptop under Windows XP. Unfortunately this does not work on my system when connected to the Linksys router by WiFi or ethernet. More precisely, the IBM Lotus "sametime" application does not work, and she cannot access the IBM Intranet homepage which she needs to use company tools and applications. C6: Suspend on laptop close doesn't work

Hello, I've been running Fedora on my Lenovo X61s laptop for many (Fedora) generations. Fedora 15, however, was not my cup of tea, so I've decided to wipe out Fedora, and do a clean install of CentOS 6 (x86_64). Everything works OK, except that the laptop does not suspend when I close the lid. I've checked the settings in "Power Management", and it is set to suspend when the lit is closed, with or without AC power. This has always worked in Fedora. PackageKit via ssh

Hi, I'm trying to use gnome PackageKit (gpk-application) on a centos 6 x86_64 system. When I am sitting at the machine it works ok, but most of the time I am accessing that C6 system via ssh from my centos 5 desktop. In this scenario gpk-application starts ok, lists packages, resolves deps, etc... but then it doesn't pop up the box asking for the root password, and aborts with a message "Failed to obtain authentication". I know I can use yum, but occasionally I like using a GUI to browse through available packages. Is there any way to use PackageKit remotely via ssh? Thanks

Effecting CentOS change

CentOS has a clear mission. It's the first paragraph on the centos.org home page: CentOS is an Enterprise-class Linux Distribution derived from sources freely provided to the public by a prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor. CentOS conforms fully with the upstream vendors redistribution policy and aims to be 100% binary compatible. (CentOS mainly changes packages to remove upstream vendor branding and artwork.) CentOS is free. Discussions about the packages and utilities that are or aren't included in CentOS (the recent discussion of system-config-bind comes to mind, but it's not the only example) should re-read the CentOS mission. Anyone wanting change in that regard should, imo, purchase a license from the prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor and provide feedback as a paying customer. Said vendor may or may not heed those suggestions, but that is the only effective way to change the CentOS utility/package list. So there is longer an xorg.conf file in centos 6. Where is that stored now? When I am running host C5 and guest C6 using kvm all I can get is 800x600. They System->Preferences->Display app only has "detect monitor". There is no LCD selection anymore that would then allow me to select something higher than 800x600. I tried a "-g" option for qemu-system-x86_64 -g WxH[xDEPTH] Set the initial graphical resolution and depth But that does now work So how do increase my kvm screen size with C5 host and C6 guest, and where or how is X controlled now with no xorg.conf ? Hello all, I am running CentOS 5.6 64 bit. When running "yum -y install ncurses-devel", I expect that only ncurses 64 bit version will be installed. However, actually both i386 and x64 are installed, that made me unhappy :) ncurses-devel-5.5-24.20060715.i386.rpm ncurses-devel-5.5-24.20060715.x86_64.rpm Is there anything worng here? I was about to ask here how to do proper locking in a bash script when I found a page that addressed my objections to the race conditions I was finding in most sample code: <http://www.davidpashley.com/articles/writing-robust-shell-scripts.html> I just wanted to pass on the link to anyone else that needs this. One thing not addressed is how to deal with an orphaned lock file (eg. if the system crashes with the lock held). He stores the PID in the lock file, so one could look up the matching process and see if it's the script that's expected to create it. Otherwise one should be safe in deleting the lock file and trying again.

Setting hostname and network settings in 6.0 text mode installer

I'm doing my first 6.0 install the same way as I've always done my server installs -- in text mode. But it looks like there's no option to do the following in the 6.0 text mode installer? * Set hostname * Set network settings * Choose packages I really hope I'm missing something because having to use a GUI to install a server is incredibly painful. greetings, have been google foo for week or so. used to be super easy to upgrade spamassassin on CentOS dist. just grab the tarball and put in right spot and rpmbuild -tb spamassassin-3.somethingsomething.tar.gz then rpm or yum install and done would take just a few minutes. Yet... in regards to EL4 / CentOS 4 and spamassassin, it appears the end of the road for .spec in SA tarball evidentally some admins had a hard time doing the above for some perl issues. we havent had urgent need to upgrade one of our legacy mail servers that is still on 4. that will change of course with Centos6 out now. this is, did anyone roll a spamassassin 3.3.2 for CentOS4 / EL4 yet? tips or share rpms please? - rh

Dear All I downloaded the octave-3.4.2 and tried to install it on my centos 5.6 as the following: #./configure But it prompted for lack of a c compiler, so I tried to install gcc first and then re-executed it and it was successful. #make But it prompts as "No targets specified and no makefile found". #make install But it prompts as "No rule to make target 'install'". I had the same steps for installing applications when I was on my centos 5.0 machine. Can you please let me know what is wrong my case? Thank you

Using FreeIPA Server V2 and began testing against CentOS6 since it has a better support for SSSD. Ran into an issue with importing a Kerberos keytab to the new host and the FreeIPA folks indicated this is a known bug that was fixed in RHEL5.6: http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2011-0832.html The new IPA client is ipa-client-2.0-10.el5_6.1. Any idea when this will make it into the CentOS6 repo? David

Easy switch from Fedora 14 to CentOS 6??

Of course I can switch, I know, by brute force : just install CentOS over top of Fedora. But that would require a tedious day (of manually re-tweaking panels, adding & removing software, etc. ad nauseam, *and* transferring a backup copy of my data back onto the machine) -- which I'd prefer to avoid. What I want to do, if I can, is emulate the upgrades I've been doing with each new release of Fedora. I'm hoping, since the like can be done from SL, maybe it can also be done from Fedora. (Minor footnote: if Fedora has any browser I don't run, it's an oversight on my part. I realize most aren't available, or at least not as rpms, for CentOS; I'm willing to make that sacrifice.) -- Beartooth Staffwright, Not Quite Clueless Power User I have precious (very precious!) little idea where up is.

For those interested, I switched a SL 6 desktop I use at my desk to CentOS 6 without a hurt... Did : Downloaded centos-release-6-0.el6.centos.5.x86_64.rpm and redhat-logos-60.0.14-10.el6.noarch.rpm from CentOS repo rpm -e --nodeps sl-release redhat-logos rpm -hiv redhat-logos-60.0.14-10.el6.noarch.rpm centos-release-6-0.el6.centos.5.x86_64.rpm yum update reboot, and voilà The only thing I noted, is that the boot screen (the image that covers the init scripts) is still centos, but the shutdown one is centos' Have fun and thanks for that great long awaited release. Hello, When I try to sync CentOS 6 from different ftp mirrors using spacewalk command "spacewalk-repo-sync" I get this message " 'Unable to load package', 'Invalid information uploaded to the server' " for 38 packages. When I check, these 38 packages are not named correctly. For example, sync command is looking for "compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-69.el6-0.i686" package but only "compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-69.el6.i686" is available. regards, Frederic

Source Device Driver during installation in CentOS 6

When i boot the system using CD/DVD, i do not see boot : prompt instead it says "Enter" and then select the installation method. I'll summarize what I've learned trying to install Centos6 on a Dell Optiplex GX 240 Review: a) I decried the lack of CD images for Centos6. b) I was informed that it's unlikely they'll be produced due to an upstream decision. c) I pointed out that the machine only had floppy, CD and HD boots capability. d) I got a suggestion to use the network method. Results: 1) PXE boot might work, but it seems that it's a lot of trouble setting up a PXE server. I'm still working on it. 2) The NET-INSTALL indeed did work, with the following gotchas: 2a) The URL to enter is not obvious. 2b) I tried the one at Stanford, and at uidaho, but they failed. 2c) Finally, http://mirror.centos.org/centos/6.0/os/i386 worked. 3) SInce I had only a text install, various interesting and important programs were missing: ssh (which apparently is masquerading under the name "openssh-clients"), ftp and perl, which YUM got for me. 4) The module perl-Digest-MD5 was not in the repository. Was its removal intentional, or is it hiding in some other Centos6 repository? 5) The line-by-line notation during bootstrap is no longer shown. This makes it difficult to detect where hangups occur during the bootstrap process. Is there a way to display those notations in real time? Conclusion: I'm still trying David

Clearlooks & Bluecurve icons missing from Centos 6

The Clearlooks and Bluecurve icon directories that were provided under Centos 5 that have disappeared on Centos 6. Clearlooks icons were provided by gnome-themes-2.16.0-1.fc6 and has disappeared with gnome-themes-2.28.1-6.el6.noarch, and Bluecurve icons were provided by redhat-artwork-5.1.0-28.el5.centos, which doesn't appear to exist at all with Centos 6. Web page creates a temp file saying "update", then cron job runs once a minute looking for that file, kicks off update script, then deletes temp file. If you don't want to wait a full minute you could use 'incron' to monitor the temp directory and kick the update right away. Hard disk installation

Has anyone installed CentOS-6 from the hard disk? I just tried this without success. I should say that I asked the question before about CentOS-5.6, and while I got many suggestions in reply, no-one actually said that they _had_ installed CentOS this way. What I did was to "mount -o loop" the DVD iso (which I checksum-ed) and copy isolinux/vmlinuz and isolinux/initrd.img , as well as the images/ directory, to /boot , and then added a simple stanza ------------------------ title CentOS-6 root (hd0,1) kernel /vmlinuz text askmethod initrd /initrd.img ------------------------ The machine - I should have said that it is an HP MicroServer - boots fine, until it gets to "Waiting for hardware to initialize", at which point the screen goes blank and nothing appears to happen. I should say that the machine is running under CentOS-5.6, which I installed with a USB stick. I'm trying to install CentOS-6 on another partition. I shall try the USB stick method shortly. Just had a good laugh. I'm sitting here at my desk working with my laptop sitting off to the side; I've just loaded C6 this morning and as I understand it C6 _just_ finished syncing on the mirrors over the weekend. I look up from an email I'm composing to see the updates alert being displayed. Deleting a KVM virtual machine from the command line

I am working on a sandbox machine that will allow users to play around with building virtual machines, then blow them all away each night with a cron job. I wrote a small script that uses the virsh command to destroy the VMs, then remove the storage. For some reason the vm name still shows up in the virt-manager GUI. Anyone have an idea how you delete it from there as well, without using the GUI? thanks Sean

CentOS 6 and pxeboot

Well, I started the install, got pxeboot to get to the kickstart file, formatted the drive... and then it failed, telling me "unable to read group information from repositories. This is a problem with the generation of your install tree." A quick google gives me the first hit from a year ago, bug 4372 <http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=4372>, which says there's a metadata problem. Has anyone else run into this today? mark

how to enable Flow Control on CentOS?

Hi, I have an interesting situation with one of our switches. It's a D-Link DGS-3100, 24 port 10/100/1000 Layer 2 Managed switch with some CentOS servers connected to it. On many of the servers I need to disable Flow Control on the switch's ports otherwise the CentOS server's doesn't connect to the switch. i.e. the Switch indicates that the LAN cable is unplugged and CentOS can simply not connect to any host on the LAN. As soon as I disable Flow Control, CentOS "breaks". Hello List, i downloaded centos6 x86_64. With DVD-iso1 i made a booteable usb-stick (universal usb installer 1.8.5.7). When i boot my HP ProLiant DL380 G4 from the stick, the CentOS boot screen comes up and and the message "Automatic boot in xx seconds..." appears. * When i do not hit any key, the seconds are counted to zero an then it starts again at 10 seconds - again and again. * When hitting return, a boot menu appears: 1) Boot 2) Boot (text mode) 3) Network Installation 4) Memory-Test 5) Boot from local drive Only Options "Memory-Test" and "Boot from local drive" work. When choosing Option 1,2,3 i'm always pushed back to the menu. How to install CentOS vom the stick? Please help me to find my mistake. Please tell me, if i can provide any information. Bye, Florian

hi guys, I appreciate that the visibility of centos-6 content is highly tempting and many people are going to be jumping in to get on there asap - however, I just want to point out that till its released, its liable to change. And I can *confirm* that content presently visible is going to change. So hang in there, give it another day or so - dont do the installs till the mirror system is online, till the sha sum's for content is published, till the torrents are available. - KB

Below is a repost of the message I sent about the strange error message I was getting when trying to build my project on CentOS. I am a software developer and don't have time to compare distros. I am also not an autotools expert. The autotools files in my project were lmade by others. It builds on everything except CentOS. I also don't have the time to build a simple test case. That would probably be time-consuming. The only thing I can do is explain how to reproduce the error. However, this would be time-consuming for anyone trying to do so. Sorry, I think I will just have to move to another distro, even Cygwin, for C development. That is a shame, because Centos is great in other respects. ----- Forwarded message from "John J.
