Has anyone seen a supported hardware list on CentOS 6? I've been looking around for the last few days; even looked at RedHat's site but didn't find one. Wierd cursor jump when I type letter "y"

Guys. I have this problem for a long time. In large number of times when I type letter "y", like in "you" my typing cursor jumps 2-3 rows up or 1-2 words to the left. I am unable to understand why. Could it be something with lap-top keyboard? Typing rate? CentOS 5.5 Gnome, I mostly use Firefox and Thunderbird. Ljubomir

Offhand, I think checking for a lock file before starting is probably the easiest way to do it. That's what I do for scripts that are cronjobs but can also be initiated manually. However, this might not work if your web app is inserting/updating the data in MySQL directly rather than simply starting a new import process as I'm assuming.

Triggering script from cron or web client

I have a Bash script, currently run a couple times an hour from cron, that pulls data from an old Windows DB by rsync, converts it to SQL, and injects it into a MySQL DB for display in a LAMP-based app. (Make and Perl are also involved to minimize the number of tables touched and to clean up the SQL generated by Pxlib.) I'd like to add the ability to refresh the data immediately from the web app, but I don't want it to trample on the periodic script and corrupt the data. I figure the ideal way to do this is to run the script in a loop in its own process, waiting on a semaphore that times out at the refresh period, and poke the semaphore from the web app to have it run before the next periodic cycle. Are there existing frameworks to wrap this kind of thing in? Something that handles starting the loop at server startup, shutting it down at server halt, and handles the IPC between the web server and the service script.

Bind DDNS updates

So according to the Bind arm, `rndc freeze zone ...` should drop the jrn file and flush its deltas. I have tested this and it's not updating the master on my 5.6 box with bind-9.3.6, it drops the jrn and discards the deltas after an unfreeze|thaw. A service restart behaves as expected. Anyone know what's up with that, is it fixable? I don't really have the time to update to 9.7 if that's a possible fix. Thanks, jlc

Quota (and disk usage) is incorrectly reported on nfs client mounting XFS filesystem

hi all, I hope you can help me with a strange quota/nfs/XFS behavior... I'm using Centos 5.6 on both a nfs server and client. Both are 64-bit, and using a recent kernel: NFS server: Linux fs2.priv 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue May 31 13:22:04 EDT 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux NFS client: Linux nx8.priv 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue May 31 13:22:04 EDT 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux The NFS server is exporting a XFS filesystem: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/vgXX-lvXX 24T 16T 8.2T 66% /export User foo (for anonymity) added ~3TB of data in the last 2-3 days. On the NFS server, her quota is reported as ~5.8 TB: Disk quotas for user foo (uid 1314): Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace /dev/mapper/vgXXX-lvXXX 6129681348 7490000000 0 6991914 0 0 On a NFS client, her quota is reported as ~1.8TB: Disk quotas for user foo (uid 1314): Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace fs2:/XXXXX 1831504512 3195032704 0 6988049 0 0 When I modify her quota on the NFS sever, it's not reflected on the NFS client. This problem is specific user foo. There are about 20 other users with quotas on this NFS server, and if I change one of their quotas, the quota/usage is correctly (and instantly) reflected on the NFS client. rpc.quotad is configured to use port 875, and I can see this is working with strace. And tcpdump shows an established connection: 16:50:04.480757 IP nx8.priv.pssc > fs2.priv.875: UDP, length 116 16:50:04.481015 IP fs2.priv.875 > nx8.priv.pssc: UDP, length 68 Any ideas? Thanks! Power-outage

I have a CentOS-5.6 remote server in a house in Italy, where there are occasional thunder-storms. There was one yesterday, when the electricity went off 3 times, for a second or so on each occasion. My server, an HP MicroServer, came back (re-booted) on 2 of the 3 occasions, but not on the third. I assume that the problem arises because the machine does not close down properly. (Although it is also possible that a voltage surge might have been responsible - I have no surge protector on this supply.) It seems to me that it should be possible to have a simple, torch-battery operated, system which will keep the machine alive long enough to make a graceful exit. A full-blown UPS would be excessive, I think, as I only want the machine to re-boot when the current comes back on. I know there is a Remote Management (iLO) card for this machine, which might be useful for this. Unfortunately, I've already used the PCIe slot for a second ethernet card. CentOS on the HP MicroServer

I'm been running two HP MicroServers as home-servers under CentOS-5.6 for 2 months, and have been very happy with their performance. I'm wondering if there are many other MicroServer/CentOS users around? I've been surprised when looking at the MicroServer forums (eg <<http://www.avforums.com/forums/networking-nas/ 1431514-hp-proliant-microserver-n36l-owners-thread.html>) how few posts I see from CentOS users, even though RHEL is one of the only two OS's officially supported by HP for this machine (the other is Windows Home Server). Is there by chance a MicroServer/CentOS forum anywhere? I haven't been able to locate one. The MicroServer is incredibly cheap at the moment, as HP keep extending their cash-back offer which brings the price down to about €160 (with 1GB RAM and a 250GB SATA disk). There is a large amount of official HP Linux support, eg the "HP Smart Update Manager", though as usual with HP software I find it quite difficult to use. Strange autotools error

I am using CentOS 5.6, autoconf 2.59 and automake 1.9.6. I run an autogen script which cleans all autotools files and then installs new ones. If the appliction has no dependencies running configure, make and make install works fine. However if it has dependencies I get the messages "Creating Makefile" and "Could not find input file Makefile". I've herd that I need another development package. What is it? Or what causes these contradictory messages? I must say that I have encountered this sort of problem only on CentOS. Thanks, John -- John J. How much SWAP Space.

As per http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Deployment_Guide-en-US/ch-swapspace.html It says it should be 1 x of Physical RAM or less. Hi, I'm currently using, CentOS release 4.8 (Final) and wanted to update the pam_tally module to support unlock_time. I understand this is only support on centos 5.x and up. What are my options for updating pam_tally to support unlock_time, can I simply download and update from a centos repo or should I compile pam. I would appreciate some suggestions. paul

What comes to mind is that IP's set for interconnection (in lucci conf) must not be public IP's but of that separate/secundary network in order for main node to be able to contact the rest of the nodes. I set this up by creating host entries in the /etc/hosts file and pointing those entries to the IP addresses assigned to the NIC's connected via x-over cable. I then created the cluster using the names specified in the hosts file. I've done some network sniffing on the NIC's connected with x-over cable and there's clearly a constant communication between the two boxes. This leads me to conclude that the cluster communication is both working and moving over the channel I intended. Thanks for the input. Let me know if you have any other suggestions. Ryan

Hi folks, I am in the process of getting rsyslog 5.8.2 to work on CentOS 5.6 (both 64 and 32 bit). All that is left is getting SELinux to work with it. Has anybody out there gone through the process of working this out and can provide a policy file? Not sure exactly what you need but I came across this when setting up rsyslog to work with mysql and was having SELinux protecting services. This is what I used you can see if it helps resolve your issue. Again I don't know if this will work for you but u can try it in a test environment and see if it helps # setenforce 0 # service rsyslog restart # cat /var/log/audit/audit.log | grep rsyslogd | audit2allow -M myselinuxmod; semodule -i myselinuxmod.pp # setenforce 1 # service rsyslog restart That should get all audit related errors, audit allow a policy file and load up the file. Bind97

I notice that CentOS 5.6 release notes say that bind97 is now included. However, my CentOS 5.6 installations have bind 9.3. I'm guessing that bind97 is not installed by default, due to the possibility of config file breakage or something. It looks like you have to explicitly install the bind97* packages. I don't see anything in the release notes about how to handle the transition from bind 9.3 to bind 9.7. Has anyone done this, or seen a list of potential pitfalls? Thanks, --Bill

mounting a CentOS 5.5-based NFS partitions from a Mac OS X machine

Hello listmates, Yes, I know - Macs and NFS do not co-exist easily. Still I've got to make this happen somehow. In short - we have two CentOS-based NFS servers. They work fine with a variety of Linux machines but when I try to mount them from a Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 machine I get nowhere. I.e., the Mac does not complain yet reads nothing over the NFS. Has anybody seen this? Does anybody know of a fix? Thanks. Boris.

Strange symbolic link behaviour?

Hi, I'm running CentOS 5 and running into a strange situation with symbolic links that I have never seen or noticed before. If I create the following symbolic link: [eric@eric-laptop ~]$ pwd /home/eric [eric@eric-laptop ~]$ ls Mail draft inbox queue sent trash [eric@eric-laptop ~]$ ln -s Mail/inbox test [eric@eric-laptop ~]$ ls test 1 2 3 4 5 [eric@eric-laptop ~]$ cd test [eric@eric-laptop test]$ pwd /home/eric/test [eric@eric-laptop test]$ ls 1 2 3 4 5 [eric@eric-laptop test]$ ls .. draft inbox queue sent trash The strange behaviour here is when listing the parent directory (..). In this case, ls .. is listing the contents of Mail/ directory - not /home/eric. In the past, I always recall being able to use the parent identified (..) to move up one level in the directory structure whether in a symlink or not. In this case, I would have expected ls .. to list the contents of /home/eric - not /home/eric/Mail. Am I wrong? Am I seeing strange behaviour here? If so, is there a way to enable the behaviour I expect? Thanks! Eric

shared cups printers disappeared

I have two computers, one with a HP printer on it and one with a Samsung printer on it. Both systems have their respective pritnters listed under system-config-printer and have "enabled" "accepting jobs" and "shared" checked. Up to a few days ago this worked fine. Suddenly I can't see either printer from the other machine and as far as I know nothing has changed other than the usual "yum update" stuff that has come in over the past few days. I can see the local printer on each computer but system-config-printer (and applications) can't see the remote printer at all. It's odd that the remote printer has disappeared from both computers at the same time. Each computer can see its own local printer but it can't see the remote printer on the other computer. The firewall has port 631 tcp and udp both allowed on both computers. Centos|Windows Cross Platform File Managers

Greetings all! Can anyone recommend a Midnight Commander like file manager that will run on Windows Vista please? I have downloaded and installed 2 MC's for Vista, but the actual MC user window running under Vista is very small compared to my screens real estate, and I cannot seem to make it fill half the screen. I have found Double Commander for Windows: http://doublecmd.sourceforge.net/ and installed that, and wondered if there is a version of Double Commander available for Centos please? Any decent File Manager that will run on Centos and Windows would be fine. That way I can easily switch between the two OSes as needed, and be comfortable using just one cross-platform file manager. Thanks. _________________________ I am working on a CentOS clustered LAMP stack and running into problems. I have searched extensively and have come up empty. Here's my setup: Two node cluster identical hardware. IBM x226 with RSAII adapters for fencing. Configured for Active/Passive failover - no load balancing. No shared storage - manual rsync of data (shared SSH keys, rsync over SSH, cron job). Single shared IP address I used luci and ricci to configure the cluster. It's a bit confusing that there's an 'apache' script but you have to use the custom init script. I'm past that though. The failover function is working when it's kicked off manually from the luci web interface. I can tell it to transfer the services (IP, httpd, msqld) to the secondary server and it works fine. I run into problems when I attempt to simulate a failure (a pulled network cord for instance). The primary system recognizes the failure, shuts down it's services, attempts to inform the secondary server to take over and then it never does. Here's what I've already troubleshot: No IPTables running No SELinux running Hosts file resolves all IP address/host names properly. I must say that I am less familiar with how all of the cluster components work together. All of the Linux clusters I have built thus far have been heartbeat+mon style clusters. I'm looking to find out if there is an additional debug layer that I can put in place to get some more detailed information about what is transacting (or not) between the two cluster members. Anyway to ensure SSH availability?

I was having problems with the same server locking up to the point I can't even get in via SSH. I've already used HTB/TC to reserve bandwidth for my SSH port but the problem now isn't an attack on the bandwidth. So I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to ensure that SSH is given cpu and i/o priority. However, so far reading seems to imply that it's probably not going to help if the issue is i/o related and/or it would require escalating SSH to such levels (above paging/filesystem processes) that makes it a really bad idea. Since I'm not the only person who face problems trying to remotely access a locked up server, surely somebody must had come up with a solution that didn't involve somebody/something hitting the power button?

OT: 1.1.1.1 is not private anymore?

Hi all, Our network is suspected to be infected by malware by the detector in upline network. Turns out that some of our developers use 1.1.1.1 as a "pinging testing". Google comes to my knowledge that 1.1.1.1 is not a private IP anymore? Since when? Also Google says 1.1.1.1 is well-known to be used by botnet command and control host?? I've blocked it in the local gateway. Just curious......

apcupsd is only suppose to work with APC's UPS's and the apcupsd developer will not deal with complaints about UPS's from other manufacturers. If your non-APC UPS works with apcupsd, then count yourself lucky. If you want to use another manufacturer's UPS, check out NUT (http://www.networkupstools.org/) to see if it will work with your UPS. One last thing, APC has changed their communications protocol (it's called microlink now) on new UPS's, so apcupsd doesn't work nearly as well as it used to. -- Brent L. Bates (UNIX Sys. Admin.) yum update -> [Errno 4] Socket Error: timed out

Trying to update a second CentOS box, I'm getting this error repeatedly: [Errno 4] Socket Error: timed out I'm getting this on every mirror and have gone through the list of mirrors more than a dozen times. Oddly, the RPMs I'm trying to upgrade I upgraded just yesterday without a problem on another machine on the same LAN with no problems whatsoever. I can ping mirrors fine. There were a spate of these errors back in 2006. The fix for many was to add this line to yum.conf: timeout=300 So I did that on the machine where yum is having the problem, but the same errors are returned. Anyone else seeing this? Anyone know what the problem is?

centos 5.6 and intel MHD4500 graphics card

Hi! I've a toshiba satellite notebook, and I tried to install centos 5.6. The installer starts, but when it turns to graphical mode, the backlight goes off. I see the windows, buttons, but it's very dark, maybe the backlight switching off.. How can I get the installer to work correctly? The machine details: core i3 330m (The graphics controller maybe integrated to the cpu...) it's a MHD4500 (GMA4500) Thanks: Balazs
