preventing symlinks?

This may be more of a general linux question but is there a simple way of preventing users from creating symlinks to or from certain directories? I have a /scratch dir that's a single 27TB volume and I don't want users linking their home dirs as there's a chance it will screw up our external backups. Is this a job for SELinux? Any ideas? Redirecting PHP error messages into a log file

Hello, I'm using CentOS release 5.5 x86_64 with the stock php-5.1.6-27.el5 and would like to redirect PHP messages into /var/log/httpd/php_log First I tried adding that file name to /etc/php.ini: error_log = "/var/log/httpd/php_log" and restarted httpd, but the file didn't appear. I've touched it and changed owner to apache.apache, but that didn't help. Then I've changed that line to error_log = syslog and now I get the messages in /var/log/messages: Jul 29 21:29:24 hXXX httpd: PHP Notice: Undefined index: REMOTE_ADDR in /var/www/html/odnoklassniki/index.php on line 44 Jul 29 21:29:45 hXXX httpd: PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '[' in /var/www/html/odnoklassniki/index.php on line 44 I still would like to move those message to a separate file though, so I've added the following line to /etc/syslog.conf and reloaded syslogd service: httpd.* /var/log/httpd/php_log but the file is still empty. Repo question

Not quite OT, I think. On one PC, I'm running Scientific Linux 6, and would like to add one or more additional repositories for yum a/o PackageKit to draw on. (In particular, at the moment, I can't seem to find an rpm for Pan that doesn't come up against dependency hell.) There don't seem to be any help/discussion lists such as this for SL, or I haven't found them. So I'm guessing that this is the nearest thing to one -- and also that, just maybe, a repo for CentOS would be the canonical first choice for my need. Hello, I always wanted to ask: do you need to reboot after updating packages like kernel, glibc, postgresql? Or do you need to restart the postgresql service after updating it with yum? Hey, recently I experienced yum bugs on some servers... A simple 'yum update' gives me the yum usage... I noticed a difference between it and a simple 'yum': # yum udpate Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, priorities usage: yum [options] COMMAND # yum Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, priorities You need to give some command usage: yum [options] COMMAND Once, a 'yum clean all' helped and I could update once. But now, I tried several cleanups and I still get the usage... Anyone else experienced it? Thx, JD

Run system-config-firewall 1.1 open local port 8080 1.2 add a forward rule: local 8080 to remote a.b.c.d:8181, tcp 2. echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_foward 3. add a iptables rule: /sbin/iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -d a.b.c.d -p tcp --dport 8181 -j MASQUERADE That's all. OpenOffice 3.3.0 crashing on CentOS 5.5

The last few releases of OpenOffice have gotten very unstable on my desktop which is a CentOS 5.5 i386 system. After multiple crashes when doing embedded simple drawings in OpenOffice writer (circles and lines with connections), I started using the versions from Sun then Oracle. I am now using version 3.3: openooffice.org3-3.3.0-9567. I've lived with this but with version 3.x it has gotten really bad. Display info: depth 16-bit, Intel Boradwater-G Chipset 965Q Crashes I am experiencing now: Writer sometimes using 100% CPU and X is unresponsive. (I have to ssh to the workstation and kill Writer to recover.) Random crashes in Writer Writer crashes when moving circles or lines in simple drawings (mainly circles, lines, clipart, etc.) (insert -> object -> OLE object -> OO drawing)... crashes in Calc when adding text at the end of a line of text in a cell. Could this be a problem with some setting or with Java? Any help would be most appreciated, -- Wade Hampton

Hello everyone, Im having a issue that I just cant seem to figure out. We currently are running an email server Centos 5.6 Postfix/Dovecot with a squirrelmail frontend. I was setting up a testbed to do a migration to SoGo using LDAP/MYSQL/POSTFIX/Dovecot. I have everything up and functional but one thing is giving me an issue. The testbed box will not handle a users mailbox over 2gb. We are using mbox on the existing server with no issues at all. I have multiple users with inboxes over 2gb and and archive mbox file with over 50gb. I have check postfix and made sure that the mailbox_size_limit = 0 Both are running i686 as returned by the arch command and both are Centos version 5.6. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. -- Bo Lynch

mirroring with lftp

i've maintained a local centos repository at work using rsync, but it seems the corp honchos have decided to block rsync at our firewall, plus its never been 100% reliable, I'd get aborts on protocol errors sometimes several times before pulling down a complete new distro update. i'm trying to figure out how to do this with lftp, and its got me somewhat stymied. I'm testing with --dry-run like... lftp -c 'open http://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/ && mirror -c -X \*/ia64 -X \*/s390 -X \*/alpha -X \*/SRPMS --dry-run' but my -X excludes don't seem to work (I don't want/need itanium, s390, alpha, or SRPMs in my repo). and, it doesn't seem to be aware of the symlinks from, for example, /5/ to /5.6/ and seems to want to pull down two copies instead (I understand that http doesn't make symlinks obvious). Should I use ftp:// instead of http:// or something? does someone have a script for maintaining a repo with lftp they'd like to share? what I saw on the wiki wasn't very helpful. -- john r pierce N 37, W 122 santa cruz ca mid-left coast

Hi all, Hey I'm trying to do some web cam stuff, and I found this link: http://freshmeat.net/projects/libv4l/releases/333037 I was doing the "rpm -qa | grep v4l" and nothing comes up, I did "ls path_to_centos/RPMS/* | grep v4l " and nothing comes up, I did 'yum provides "*/libv4l*"' and nothing comes up. Is the CentOS library for v4l named something different? Is this library something I can just grab and compile and "help" with my v4l efforts? Do I not need this library at all? I'm using 5.6 x86_64. Latest kernel produces kernel error on Dell R200 on boot-up

I accidentally noticed this error written to the warn log on my Dell R200's when the machines booted up after latest kernel update. Google doesn't have this exact error, only a few with differently named devices, but all seem to have to do with USB. Could this be a bug? Didn't see this error on other machines with more than one USB port, though. HP Network Printer

I'm attempting to install and configure HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) software on my CentOS 5.3 x86_64 system without success. I've got a HP Officejet Pro 8500 multi-function printer connected via ethernet. I'm getting a message saying that it cannot locate the libcups module in the /usr/lib64 and /usr/lib directories. However, I can locate then correct modules using the find command. I can print to this printer using multiple versions of Fedora and multiple versions of Windows. unofficial ext3 and ext4 compare

I have something like 300G I routinely backup. This includes some large 12Gig images and other files. I had been using ext3 on an external USB disk for part of the process. Under ext3 doing "rsync -a /home /mnt/external_back/backup.jun.27.2011" it took 200 minutes. I took the same computer, same external HD and reformatted it for ext4 (mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdd1). I then started the same rsync as above. The time was reduced to 170 minutes. This is on Centos 5.6 x86_64. I did notice the [ext4-dio-unwrit] process that starts up. One process for each core. I was concerned when they did not go away. But google says that is normal. :) Jerry

Jumbo Frame performance or lackof?

After successfully getting higher MTU to work on my Realtek NICs, I started testing the impact of higher MTU on file transfers using NFS exported ramdisk to ramdisk. The results were unexpected. The higher the MTU on the sending NIC, the lower the file transfer speed. I tested by using time cp to copy a 1GB file (In case compression might affect the results, so I dd the test file from the CentOS DVD ISO) The average of 6 runs per MTU with varying MTU on the receiving NICs MTU 1500 = 116.34 MB/s MTU 3000 = 103.42 MB/s MTU 4000 = 102.52 MB/s I was actually planning to do 1500, 3000, 4500, 6000 and 7200. However, I was surprised to discover although I had two seemingly identical Realtek PCI-E nics, the sending NIC could only go up to 4K. I'm wondering, that since Jumbo Frames was supposed to be better for bulk transfers, why am I seeing these results? Is it the ElRepo drivers I used to enable higher MTUs or possibly some kind of oddity with the realtek NICs I am using? Or am I mistaken about the benefits of jumbo frames and that they are only beneficial in specific configurations, perhaps only with higher network speeds and enough packets at 1500 MTU to overwhelm packet handling hardware?

I have the samba problems solved thanks to the help of folks on this forum, but I do not have the php umask problems solved. The www directory is /var/www/html and the html directory is owned by apache and is in the apache groups with the following permissions: drwxrwsr-- A sub-driectory, /var/www/html/viewpoints has the same attributes as the html directory, however when php creates a directory within /var/www/html/viewpoints, the permissions are drwxr-sr-x My goal is to have any created directories and files to have 774 permissions. Hi, Has, or does, anyone use dm-cache - specifically for caching SAN based storage locally? I'm looking for a way to speed up SAN based storage on a CentOS 5.6 + XEN Hypervisor which uses iSCSI mounted SAN storage. dm-cache seems like it do the trick, but I've never heard of it before until someone mentioned it in another mailing list. A quick search on google didn't really give me much in terms of actual user experience. Does anyone use it? Any feedback? Pitfalls? Greetings, I'm refining a CentOs configuration installation, now just over one month old running on a colocated production server. Previously, we ran a version of Fedora for over seven years. Specifically, I'm reviewing our sendmail configuration, both with respect to authentication and port usage. Previously, we had the following line in the sendmail.mc line: define(`confAUTH_MECHANISMS', `DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5 LOGIN PLAIN')dnl To authenticate, users would first have to POP their mail. A klunky script would scan appropriate log files and copy relevant IP addresses to the /etc/mail/access file that would be regenerated every 5 minutes via cron. Once the IP address was in the /etc/mail/access.db a user could be authenticated and be allowed to send email using the machine as smtp. Is there a better way of doing this? Port 587 issues: Verizon DSL filters out requests on port 25 to smtp servers not belonging to verizon.net. An alternative is to use port 587 for smtp purposes. Jumbo frames problem with Realtek NICs?

I was trying to do some performance testing between using iSCSI on the host as a diskfile to a guest vs the VM guest using the iSCSI device directly. However, in the process of trying to establish a baseline performance figure, I started increasing the MTU settings on the PCI-express NICs with RTL8168B chips. First bottleneck was discovering the max MTU allowed on these is 7K instead of 9K but googling seems to indicate that the RTL8168B is only capable of 4K frames. I assumed 4K would still be better than nothing but unfortunately bumping up the MTU to anything else but 1.5K caused the file transfers (using NFS for easy testing), to hang at random points or more accurate slow to a crawl. Checking the syslog, I discovered warnings that increasing MTU with this adapter may cause problems. Searching around, it seems to be a common problem but there doesn't appear to be any clear cut fix, including some suggestions to use a third party driver. Does anybody know of a proven solution or is the Realtek chip itself irrevocably broken/bugged that anything above the default 1500 will simply not work?

Strange issue's with LDAP and too many open files

Hi All, I've been growing a large headache on this one, i have a number of LDAP servers behind loadbalancing, since 2 days i constantly get the error: Too many open files. Although I'm not a newbie with linux I'm unable to resolve this, I have took the following stept: Changed the /proc/sys/fs/file-max to 65535 Added the following configuration to /etc/security/limits.conf: ldap soft nofile 65535 ldap hard nofile 65535 ldap - nofile 65535 # End of file If I su to the ldap user where the process is running under: [root@ldap5 ~]# su -m ldap bash: /root/.bashrc: Permission denied bash-3.2$ ulimit -H -n 65535 bash-3.2$ ulimit -S -n 65535 And still I get the error: Too many open files when open files are >1024. Shared object packaging in rpm

I whipped up a quick spec to package Zenoss' wmi client and noticed it creates a libasync_wmi_lib.so.0 and libasync_wmi_lib.so.0.0.1 that their python script would otherwise copy during its install routine (obviously I wrote a native rpm section for installation). Anyone know the naming convention associated with so's when they get compiled, what is the .0.1 extra file used for, they are slightly different. Thanks, jlc

As many Centos/Red Hat installations use it, here is a brief extract from page 30. 2.2.2.6 Disable All GNOME Thumbnailers if Possible The system’s default desktop environment, GNOME, uses a number of diﬀerent thumbnailer programs to generate thumbnails for any new or modiﬁed content in an opened folder. Grasping a full understanding of setting default Users, Groups and Masks has alluded me over the years, but now I find myself in a situation where manually "setting" the file/directory attributes is becoming a pain. I understand the fundamentals of the file attributes, though from time to time I have to review the "sticky bit"; what I do not understand is where/how the attributes are set when a user creates or modifies a file/directory. Here is my situation: My /var/www/html files have been manually set by me to apache/apache 774. This allows my PHP applications to access the files, and I assume this is a "good" setting. Now, my server is connected via Samba to my desktop. If I create a file, it is todd/todd 744, so Apache cannot access them. If PHP (Apache) creates or modifies a file, it is apache/apache 755, so I cannot access them (Write/Delete). Is there a way to resolve this? When I FTP to a friend's rent-a-server, I can read/write/delete all of the files I have placed there *and* the same for files touched by PHP (Apache). Exporting /dev/shm as NFS share?

I'm trying to do some network transfer test using NFS. The problem is when I try to eliminate the possibility of the hard disks being the bottleneck. I am unable to export /dev/shm as a NFS share. Initially there was an error about fsid or wrong filesystem. If I use a symbolic such as /home/test -> /dev/shm, on the remote system, this causes the NFS client to see its own /dev/shm If I mount /home/test as a tmpfs on the host and export it, the client also appear to use its own tmpfs rather than the host. Is there anyway to work around this or some other way to test the network speed without being bottlenecked by the sending side?

/dev/sd and /dev/mapper

I've done a little research, and can't really find out why it happens, but on one server I have built, I get the old fashion /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2 type partitions and on another server I get the /dev/mapper style partitions. Both machines are hardware raided (before the install) and both machines are Centos 5.5 64 bit, using the same set of CDs to install from. Can someone please explain why this happens? I'm not sure it matters, so this is just a curious bother. The machines are different brands with different raid controllers. Both were partitoned using the "custom layout" when installed. I'm thinking I must have overlooked a checkbox or something during the install. This is not a big deal, not a problem, it's just an itch in my brain. Thanks for any explanation. steve campbell

No DVD Mirrors - Only Torrent

I love Centos. Have in on my data centre servers, my home servers, my laptop and my netbook. Yes there are serious and continuing security concerns relating to Gnome and KDE but they are not Centos. Currently running 5.6 and would like a two set DVD of that version. However none of the mirrors offer pure DVDs only Torrent versions which involve the possibility of bits being tampered with and things leaving my servers without explicit knowledge and authority. None of the CD / DVD sellers I have contacted can offer Centos 5.6 DVDs because, they say, they can't get a virgin 5.6 DVD only Torrent. FreeBSD 8.2 (the latest) offers a virgin 1 DVD download. The whole distribution is about 4 DVDs. Can Centos offer a virgin 1 DVD download of 5.6 for those of us who are unhappy about slow Torrent, the possibility of tampering and the traffic out of our machines ? BY THE WAY, a very BIG and GRATEFUL THANK YOU to the EXCELLENT TEAM that gave us the wonderful Centos 5.6. Very much appreciated and if KBS and the others ever venture out of Kent and London a bit northwards but south of Watford I would be delighted to buy him and the others several rounds of drinks. Chicken and egg question: passwd and cronjob

Hi all, Let's say I activate password expiration for every account (including root) for every 90 days. I understand that cronjob for root will fail when the password expires. The question is, if I setup a cronjob every 90 days to renew the root password like: echo diFficulT123 | passwd --stdin root will it work? I mean at second 1 on the 90th day, which will run first? - The cronjob to renew the password - Or the password expiration, thus preventing the cronjob from running. Pardon me if it's silly. I know it's bad to change password from script, but the root acc is not used at all and has been disabled from logon remotely. I just need it to keep various cronjob to keep running. Any other advise are welcome.

how to find out what is causing high mysql cpu load

Hi all, I have a CentOS 5.6 xen domU that is used for hosting several Apache virtual hosts that use MySQL. Lately, this domU has been having performance issues and I've noticed web pages loaded from this server opening slower than usual. When I run 'top' I see mysqld constantly consuming 10-60% of CPU. sar reports average of 10-20 for %user, 5 for %system, 0.2 for %iowait and 10-20 for %steal When looking at 'xm top' in dom0 (running also CentOS 5.6) most of the other domUs have CPU(%) near zero and only this domU is reported to consume CPU more than 10%. The strange thing is, that when I run 'mytop', I do not see that many queries: I see avg of 4 users "sleeping" and occasionally some other user running a query. qps is mostly 0. No slow queries. Key efficiency is 97%. Here is my /etc/my.cnf: max_connections = 300 max_user_connections = 300 wait_timeout = 180 Nothing interesting in /var/log/mysqld.log. I tried rebooting both the dom0 and the domU which made no difference. Questions: 1. How to debug further why mysqld is taking so much cpu? 2. If I've understood correctly, the high steal% value reported by sar means that the hypervisor is giving cpu time for some other domU. How to find out why and where this cpu time is stolen to? OT: DHCP address pool for specific MAC manufacturer

Dear CentOS, This is somewhat off-topic, but I do hope to implement this on a CentOS system, so here goes... I would like to be able to setup a dhcpd (or like) daemon to maintain two IP address pools. One for devices whose leading three octets of the client MAC address are specified and the other for all other clients. Both pools would be a defined range on a commmon /24 subnet. There a several static IP devices also on this net (servers, printer, etc...). At no time would there be more than a dozen of the specified MAC range devices active. I considered splitting the /24 block into two /25 blocks and creating a shared-network with two subnets, but that still leaves no way to wild-card the lower 3 octets, which I cannot know in advance. In addition to DHCP, I've looked at DNSmasq and a few others but no joy. I don't see a solution that doesn't require a significant development effort. I'm off to think about possible doing this in perl. I still hope someone has already done this. Thanks, Ray

CUPS not rendering documents via Samba

Hi guys, any CUPS / Samba experts out there? The CUPS printing guide is a horrendous maze of options. I've got nearly there but I've got one thing wrong and I don't know where to look. I set up our two printers (HP K5400s) using the GUI printer tool. Both print the test page just fine. I set up the [printers] and [print$] shares and can browse to the printers from Windows (XP for me) I managed to get the postscript drivers installed with cupsaddsmb and it installs on the XP client just fine. ..... sadly it just prints the postscript instead of rendering it. I guess the printer queue is in raw mode but I can't see where to change it. I vaguely remember foomatic and such from ages back. Hi, Can we display year in log files timestamp? We are being audited and the auditor wants to know when we apply certain patches. yum.log shows it, but it doesn't have the year. I can argue based on common sense, but it would be much nicer if the year is there. Lingering dhclient issue

I recently reconfigured some CentOS 4.3 systems that were using DHCP to use static IP addresses. At the same time, the systems were moved to a new VLAN. Here is the approximate sequence of events that took place: 1. ifdown eth0 2. edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with static IP address 3. wait for network folks to reconfigure switch 4. ifup eth0 I may have reversed steps 1 and 2 on some of the systems. The problem was that the dhclient process didn't go away, and kept renewing the old lease. Our DHCP server is configured to contact the DNS server and update the entry for each host it serves. So the DNS entries for these systems were pointing to the old address in the old VLAN. The eth0 interface itself just kept the static IP address for which it was configured. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. My question is, what could I have done to avoid this (other than killing the dhclient process)? Is there a better way to reconfigure an interface to use a static address? I am not interested in solutions that involve using a GUI (i.e., only command line solutions). Thanks, Alfred

CentOS 5 32bit and 3Tbyte drives

Has anyone tried to use these yet? For hysterical raisons, my primary machine is CentOS5 32bit (up to date). In the machine I have a SiI 3132 dual port SATA controller with port multiplier. Both ports are plugged into an external storage device which presents 4 SATA disks on each port, for a total of 8 possible disks. Currently I have 5*1Tb in there, configured as RAID5 via mdadm I boot off an internal SATA disk; I don't see a need to change that. But space is running out; I wondering if the new 3Tb disks would work in this scenario; most importantly will 2.6.18-238.9.1.el5PAE see the whole disk? And also whether I need to be worried about 4Kbyte sectors. These new disks are confusing me! -- rgds Stephen

Slightly OT: First Time KVM and LVM on Centos

Greetings - I am a novice system administrator and will soon be purchasing a new server to replacing an aging file server for my company. I am considering setting up the new server as a KVM host with two guests; one guest as the Samba file server and a second guest as a testing area. My old server was set up about 7 years ago and has a 5 disk raid 5 configuration without LVM. I understand the benefits of using LVM and KVM in the right circumstances, but have never used either of them. I have spent a couple of days over the last week trying to understand how to setup a KVM host with guests, but there is an area that I still don't understand; that is the relationship between the underlying raid partitions, LVM, and allocating space to a host and guests. Many of the standard search term combinations in Google don't seem to be getting me anywhere. From what I have read so far I think that I want to have my file server guest using a raw partition rather than an image file, but I haven't found anything with examples or best-practices guidance for partitioning or volume management with hosts and guest VMs. So I am hoping that someone here can give me some pointers, or point me to some clear how-to's somewhere. lots of disk activity keep process from responding

hi all I have something like 3000 log files in a directory (from data collection). At 4am in the morning cron runs a script of mine that essentiallly trims all files in that directory back to a certain size. Basically does a "tail -c XXXX filename > tmp_filename" I have noticed that only around the 4am-4:15 time frame when the trim is happening does my other process log connection attempts but my process (forking and opening databases) is not responding in time to give data back to the connecting process. Not critically important as it just tries again and all ok... My question is how do I tell the script that runs to run at a lower priority perhaps ??? Or is there another way to do this I am not aware of? The trimmming of the log files is just so they they dont take a bunch of space on the HD. It doesnt have to be done supper fast or anything. Any ideas I might try? Thanks, Jerry
