We've got this really bizarre problem, trying to get a bridge/firewall working. My manager and I are almost grasping at straws.... Anyway, I'm using lshw to look at an identical machine, and a Dell 1950 that works when configured as a bridge, and there's one thing I don't know: does anyone know what mingnt is? Thanks. mark

Personally, I find that indenting config files by 3 spaces has a lot of advantages to indenting them by 4 spaces although conventional wisdom might suggest otherwise. Who's with me on this?

Odd issue with custom udev rule at boot

Hi All, I've written a custom udev rule to change the permissions of /dev/ttyS* but it doesn't seem to be working at boot up. If I run /sbin/udevcontrol reload_rules; udevtrigger The rules are parsed, applied and the permissions are then correct but why is it not doing so at boot? The file in questions I've called /etc/udev/rules.d/49-udev-override.rules and it contains KERNEL=="tty[A-Z]*", NAME="%k", GROUP="rcl", MODE="0660", OPTIONS="last_rule" the default 50-udev.rules file has been left untouched. SELinux is in permissive mode and so I can't find a reason why it is happening. Anyone have any ideas? -- James A. Possible to use multiple disk to bypass I/O wait?

I'm trying to resolve an I/O problem on a CentOS 5.6 server. The process basically scans through Maildirs, checking for space usage and quota. Because there are hundred odd user folders and several 10s of thousands of small files, this sends the I/O wait % way high. The server hits a very high load level and stops responding to other requests until the crawl is done. I am wondering if I add another disk and symlink the sub-directories to that, would that free up the server to respond to other requests despite the wait on that disk? Alternatively, if I mdraid mirror the existing disk, would md be smart enough to read using the other disk while the first's tied up with the first process?

A bridge problem

We just went to replace the bridge/firewall services one one server with the same on another. It's pretty simple, and I literally cloned (w/ rsync) a third server that does this onto the one that will be the new one. Then copied the /etc/sysconfig/iptables from the one being replaced, and brought it up this morning. Nope. We had to put everything back the way it was. The new one sees the two or three servers behind the firewall, and we can ping them, from the new box. On one, we see IPP broadcasts; in fact, we see lots of broadcast packets using tcpdump. From outside, though, you can't see the servers. Trying to ping them, they see nothing. It seems to be the case that tcp and icmp packets are blocked, and we can't figure out why. Are the updates supposed to be synced to the mirrors before the announce message goes out? Only a random few machines could get these updates yesterday. I enabled the 'priority' plugin as a short-term fix because we have a lot of repositories and I wasn't entirely sure which ones could be discarded. The dell-omsa repo seems to have lost its priority=1 line and the plugin seems to assume priority=<bignumber> and thus the dell repo was being excluded. Added the priority=1 line and everything installed OK. (Yes I will tell him as he sits opposite me but the list deserved to know the answer too.) -- Roy

OT: clear error from premature disk removal from LVM

Hi all, This question is only slightly ontopic, in that the host system is a CentOS 5 box, but is otherwise a fairly generic question. I've looked in so many different places for an answer, but haven't had much luck, so I'm hoping someone here has some advice. (for the record: I posted this question to comp.os.linux.misc a few weeks ago) === I made a minor mistake recently, and am trying to determine the cleanest way to clear it. Attached to my hardware RAID controller were two RAID6 units. One was the original disks that came with the server, which originally hosted our data, but had since had all its data migrated to a new LVM PV. The other is newer disks with a new PV, VG, and LV. For testing purposes, after completing the pvmove I created a clean, new LV on the unit containing the old disks. (I believe that I actually destroyed the original RAID6 array and created a new one.) Unfortunately, I completely forgot about this LV during a recent hardware upgrade, and didn't run through the LVM steps to completely remove an unused physical volume before removing these old disks. (At least the LV was not mounted at the time). Now LVM seems to be confused about the disks and volumes that are available, and the kernel may also be confused. Taken from a recent reboot, here's the dmesg log entry for the old testing unit: sd 1:0:2:0: Attached scsi disk sdc Later on, I removed the disks through the controller's tools, replaced them with new ones (so this is the third set of disks), and created a new RAID6 unit. After making the new unit I see (among other messages which don't seem helpful): May 19 16:27:28 xxxx kernel: sd 1:0:2:0: Attached scsi disk sdd Later on, when trying to run parted or friends, I see messages like so: May 23 11:22:47 xxxx kernel: scsi 1:0:2:0: rejecting I/O to dead device (note the same scsi address as sdc?) And pvdisplay says: # pvdisplay /dev/testVG/testLV: read failed after 0 of 4096 at 0: Input/output error That looks bad--it seems like testLV is trying to find the old LVM on /dev/sdc, but the array on sdd is there instead. Worse, I fear that trying to manipulate sdd may cause problems in the future, so am wary of doing anything with it before I clear up this issue. What should my next steps be? I've seen recommendations (in other somewhat similar situations) to try an lvscan or vgscan to refresh the list of volumes; or to try vgreduce --removemissing to remove the now-gone volumes from what LVM thinks is there. I do also still have the original disks, which I could put back and try to get LVM to re-find, but would be a pain. I am hoping to avoid a reboot, since the current LV seems unaffected and is in use, but I can do it if it's the surest way to make sure my LVM configuration is clean. I should point out that I do not care at all about the data on testLV; all I want to do is cleanly tell LVM not to worry about that volume any more, and be in a position to use the third set of disks safely and reliably. Hi everyone, I need to install an older version of PHP - 5.2.16, which is not currently available through an official CentOS repo (as far as I can tell). In order to fulfill our developer's requirements, I've decided to just compile PHP and MySql from the source. Is there a way to find out what are the usual configure options that are used to compile binaries that are available through yum? Thank you! Asya

Dell openmanage srvadmin on 5.6

Hi all, I'm just trying to get Dell openmanage to run on my Centos 5.6 box. The monitoring stuff appears to have installed but the web server stuff is complaining it needs openwsman 2.2.3 or later and I can only find that for RHEL/Centos 6, not 5. Can anyone point me at a suitable rpm, or do I have to resort to compiling it? Surely I'm not the only one trying to do this. -- Kevin Thorpe

Bash rotating tab completion with list

I just got off a Windows 7 terminal which has rotating tab completion, this means that in the case of completion ambiguity the shell completes one of the possibilities, and subsequent tabs complete to different possibilities. This in contrast to bash's behaviour of simply printing a list of possibilities. Googling I have found that bash can in fact have rotating completion by setting "\C-i": menu-complete. However, I would really like the first tab to show the possibilities (default behaviour, albeit on the second tab), and subsequent tabs to rotate. I can't figure this out. Any ideas? Unable to grep 5 mins logs

I need to prepare a script which will grep logs from the current time to previous 5 mins that is if the current time is Mon Jun 13 12:40:40 IST 2011 then all the logs between the interval Mon Jun 12:35 - 12:40 2011 should be grepped by the script and append it to another file. However, the below script is not able to grep the desired logs, so I need some help in preparing the script. CentOS 5.6 - Samba server + Windows error 233

Hi! I have upgraded my servers yesterday to CentOS 5.6 via yum update. Everything went smoothly except that i have client workstations not part of the domain that are not able to access the samba server anymore. The samba server is part of the domain. We recently added Windows 2008 R2 DC. Everything was working smoothly until the CentOS update. I had a Win7 Workstation that i had success connecting when using the "net use" command: net use g: \\sambaserver\share /user:domain\username The mapping worked right away and didn't even asked for the password. Normally, before the CentOS upgrade, i'd put \\sambaserver in the UNC line of the Windows Explorer and i'd get a box asking for credentials. Entering "domain\username" as user and giving the password in the password line was working. Not anymore. I have another XP workstation on another subnet (router wide open) and the mapping with the command line as specified above doesn't even work. I am stuck taking this stupid online training course from work. It just sits there doing nothing with firefox, so I pulled up konqueror, and tell it to lie and say it's IE. That works... until it gets to the content, which some HR moron is *positive* desperately needs to be in flash. I've gone into konqi's configuration, and told it to scan the correct directory for plugins, and yet a) I see no easy way to find out what plugins are installed, and b) it can't seem to see libflashplayer.so. Clues for the poor? mark

Hi, The default system-auth file for PAM on CentOS has the following auth section: auth required pam_env.so auth sufficient pam_unix.so nullok try_first_pass auth requisite pam_succeed_if.so uid >= 500 quiet auth required pam_deny.so What's the use of the pam_succeed_if line? It will only be reached if the pam_unix doesn't succeed and from my understanding it will prevent system accounts from logging in. Is it useless or am I missing something? Thanks, Daniel.

Cloning LVM

I have a workstation with two separate drives set up with LVM. I'm buying an LSI RAID controller to set up mirrored drives. I'd like to clone the existing drives over to the new mirrored drives somehow, but not sure the best way to do it. The original drives & their respective replacements are all identical in size (250GB + 1TB). I thought about using Clonezilla but wasn't sure how LVM would handle the /dev devices changing. I am working on my first vim script. The script is supposed to do some find/replace on a file, then save the file with a new name and quit vim. I will save the script in a file and then call it from a bash script like this: vim path-to-the-file -s path-to-my-script Maybe I have not found the right resources. I can find/replace with expressions that are similar to those I use manually, for example: :% s/\t/","/g Then I should add something to the beginning of file (line 1, char 1). And append something to the end of the file (last line, last char). But I cannot find a way to do this. Should I move the cursor (and how?), or what? - Jussi

High system load but low cpu usage

I'm trying to figure out what's causing an average system load of 3+ to 5+ on an Intel quad core. The server has with 2 KVM guests (assigned 1 core and 2 cores) that's lightly loaded (0.1~0.4) each. Both guest/host are running 64bit CentOS 5.6 Originally I suspected maybe it's i/o but on checking, there is very little i/o wait % as well. Plenty of free disk space available on all physical drives and memory sufficient for the usage with barely any swap in use. While performance/responsiveness of the host and guests doesn't seem to be affected, I'm still concerned about this odd load figures. Would appreciate it if anybody can suggest what else I should be looking at? NTLM auth fails after upgrade to centos 5.6

Hi, I upgraded a working centos5.5 with squid using ntlm auth to centos 5.6 today. After doing so squid failed to authenticate. Downgrading samba3x to samba3x-3.3.8-0.52.el5_5.2 got things working again. In the squid config I have, auth_param ntlm program /usr/bin/ntlm_auth --helper-protocol=squid-2.5-ntlmssp in the squid config and this was working until the upgrade. testparm shows no errors and the logs do not indicate a problem except that authentication fails. This is kind of figured out now. The actual RPM I'm using is from the debuginfo repo here: http://debuginfo.centos.org/5/x86_64/gfs2-kmod-debuginfo-1.92-1.1.el5_2.2.x… The contents of the RPM are identical to the RedHat RPM: http://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/5Server/en/os/x86_64/Debu… The problem here is that the source included in the debuginfo RPM does not match the binary. When running the binary, I get "f:q" in my gfs2_tool lockdump output, which definitely cannot happen given the source code in the RPM. It appears that this patch has been applied during compilation. https://www.redhat.com/archives/cluster-devel/2011-May/msg00037.html But the patch is not applied to the source code included. Clearly this is not a CentOS issue as the RedHat RPM is wrong too, so this is just informational to close out the issue. Sorry for the cross-post, and off-topic at that, but: This morning I received a very authentic looking email from info.paypal.com, claiming that Paypal wanted me to update my browser. (Really.) It had my name in it and all the right graphics and colors and everything. Except that the from site was info.paypal.com (whoever they are: hint - not paypal.com) and the links all had long obfuscated links in them. I verified with paypal that it was not legitimate, so I though you might all be warned as well. You may now return to the appropriate technical discussions....

Looking for gfs2-kmod SRPM

I'm searching for the SRPM corresponding to this installed RPM. % yum list | grep gfs2 gfs2-kmod-debuginfo.x86_64 1.92-1.1.el5_2.2 It is missing from: http://msync.centos.org/centos-5/5/os/SRPMS/ What I need from the SRPM are the patches. I'm working through some issues using the source code, and the patches in the RedHat SRPM (http://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/5Server/en/os/SRP MS/gfs2-kmod-1.92-1.1.el5_2.2.src.rpm) seem to be slightly different. Particularly, the output from gfs2_tool lockdump shows a 'q' glock flag in CentOS, but the RedHat source does not seem to reflect that. (The lockdump output is totally changed from the original source code by the patches.) Much appreciated if anyone can help. Thanks, Brian

what is difference between "slow initialize" and "patrol read" on RAID?

We have DELL server with MD1000 Disk array in it. O.S. is CENTOS 5.5. Recently every time MD1000 "patrol read" start I will get "media error" messages on /var/log/message file. I use MD1000 "slow initialize" to initialize "bad disk" and NO error. After "slow initialize" finish, I manually "startup patrol read". I continue get "media error" on /var/log/message. Anyone know what difference between "slow initialize" and "patrol read"? Thanks.

daemon user can't acess file while nobody user can.

I have a server where /home is on a nfs. I installed an apache (my compile) server. By default, it runs as daemon. That user can't acces files in /home/*/public_html, while the nobody user can. So if I change my apache config, it now can. /home is : drwxr-xr-x /home/user is : drwxr-xr-x /home/user/public_html is : drwxr-xr-x selinux is disabled. In the error log of apache I get : (13)Permission denied: access to /~user/file.jpg denied I changed the shell for the daemon user so I can diagnose a little bit more, and I cannot get into the user directory. When on a local drive, it's ok. So why is that the daemon user cannot go into the user directory via nfs ?

I was just saying that I'm not asking here merely because I'm too lazy to look on my own... I've got this logitech v220 notebook mouse, and the scroll wheel can be clicked left or right as well as rotated or clicked by pressing down. "normal" usage (i.e., left click, right click, middle click, and rotation of scroll wheel) works fine. Using xev I don't see anything reported for the side-click of the scroll wheel, so it may be that without some action by a driver, that the side-clicks aren't enabled. I suspect that Logitech's windoze driver tweaks the mouse in some way that "turns on" the additional actions of pressing the wheel to the left or right. The package lists LInux (2.6 kernel) as a supported OS, but of course they provide only windows/mac drivers for it, and the web site explicitly lists Linux as not supported. Talk about mixed messages. It's not a big deal, was just wondering if there was a way to recognize those clicks, in case there was something useful to be done with them. I've tried tweaking xorg.conf to increase number of buttons and changing z-axis from "4 5" to "6 7" but that stops the scroll wheel from working at all, so I put it back. Installing rather than changing

After reading the replies to my message about changing from RHEL to CentOS I think it might be easier to install the latest version of CentOS from scratch. I can save my home directory and my e-mail setup. My access to the present system is by ssh. How can I download everything with ssh then start the install? Since I am blind, I may need sighted help during the actual install process. Is it possible to specify answers to the questions wich the install will ask beforehand? Pardon the dumb questions. hard disk install failure

Has anybody successfully installed CentOS- I tried (several times) installing CentOS-5.6 from a hard disk, and each time it failed after installing all the rpms, with the warning "The installation has tried to mount image #2, but cannot find it on the hard drive." When I pressed the Debug button one time after the failure, it seemed to say that it was looking for the file in /dev/sdb7//ext2/ (/dev/sdb7 being the site of the DVD ISO). But I'm not sure what "image #2" is? Or where it should be put? Incidentally, I started by copying isolinux/vmlinuz and isolinux/initrd.img to the the directory CentOS-5.6 in the /boot parition of a working linux (Fedora) system, and adding the stanza ---------------------------- title CentOS-5.6 root (hd0,1) kernel /CentOS-5.6/vmlinuz repo=hd:/dev/sdb5:/ initrd /CentOS-5.6/initrd.img ---------------------------- The repo option was ignored, and I was asked if I wanted to install by FTP, from Hard Disk, etc. In the end I installed by http from my web-server, after mount -o loop CentOS-5.6-x86_64-bin-DVD-1of2.iso /var/www/html/ on the server . text-mode system and /media

I'm running a headless server, so no GUI, just ssh logins. I don't seem to have the mechanism that automounts USB drives to a subdirectory of /media, and from googling around I think that's a feature of a GUI-based system. What implements it? Right now I manually create a mountpoint in /mnt and then manually mount by label from /dev/disk/by-label after plugging the drive in. It would be convenient if the drive automounted when plugged in.

ftp problem?

Dear All I cannot ftp to my centos server from MS Windows machine ,but ping and telnet are ok. I checked as the following : #chkconfig tftp on #setup After enabling tftp service, still the ftp is not ok but ping & telnet are ok. Can you please help me? Thank you

Hey guys, I am trying to extract a pattern from a downloaded html file. I only want the first match printed, problem is I don't know how to force sed to exit after printing the first match of a capture group. Anyone know the trick to manipulating {p;q;} to print a capture group? Thanks, jlc
