Saving windows and settings in CentOS 7 running MATE

I have installed gnome session save and restore per http://blog.thewebsitepeople.org/2013/07/gnome-session-save-and-restore/. I am running the MATE Desktop on CentOS 7 but the app above does not seem to save and restore the positions and sizes of directory listing windows, nor does it save the order of the windows on the taskbar at the bottom. Does anyone have a better solution?

Hi, I am running CentOS Linux release 7.7.1908 (Core) with the below mentioned OpenSSL version. As per https://www.openssl.org/policies/releasestrat.html. Version 1.0.2 is no longer supported. OpenSSL Version > #openssl version > OpenSSL 1.0.2k-fips 26 Jan 2017 > # Are there any plans for the latest stable supported version of OpenSSL to be made available in the CentOS 7.x version? C8 and bacula messages

Hi list, I'm updating my backup server using C8 and bacula 9.0.6. I have problem when I run a full backup with a pool that has Maximum Volume Jobs = 1 as in the configuration used on C7. The problem is that I get this message: JobId 11: Max Volume jobs=1 exceeded. Marking Volume "Full-0009" as Used. multiple time inside bacula messages when backup is performing? Is this a bug or is a misconfiguration? Thanks in advance.

wifi settings

Hi there. I'm trying to make a backup with deja dup. The problem is that i connect to internet through my mobile. (I have an unlimited plan) When i set automatic backup it says that backup is delayed because of a metered connection. The problem is solved if i set with nmcli the GENERAL.METERED to no. So the ideal solution would be. How I change the setting so that each time i connect to my mobile wifi network the setting GENERAL.METERED is set to no. A not so ideal solution would be each time i connect to an wifi network the command "nmcli dev modify wlo1 connection.METERED no" is automatically executed.

Installing a single rpm package from desktop/browser on CentOS 7

If I want to install a software package from a simple rpm file "the GUI way" on a CentOS 7 system, what am I supposed to do? If I open the file in the desktop, or alternatively, click on a link to a package in the browser and tell it to use the default app, gnome-software (I think) opens, but it just displays the message Sorry, something went wrong I mean, really? Isn't this something that should just work? It certainly did in past releases... If I quite simply remove gnome-software, which I don't much like anyway, it looks like the handling reverts to the archive extract tool (whatever it's called these days), which is actually an improvement, but still not very helpful. So, what's everyone else doing in these situations? Is there a "standard" alternative application? I know this was handle by gnome-packagekit for a while, but its component for installation from file seems to be gone. And, yeah, I know about rpm command line and yum and all, but shouldn't there be a "more user-friendly" way? Thanks. - Toralf

Virt-manager question

Hi All - I am using virt-manager on CentOS 7. My definition had a CDROM, my first install did not have the network active so it failed. I have activated the network. now when I boot - I not longer see the CDROM start to install. How do I get that back ? My OS is still not installed. Thanks, Jerry

Gnome kind of freezes when I drag windows between workspaces

Hi there. Just wanted to ask if anyone faces a similar problem with me. When i drag windows between workspaces sometimes my desktop kind of freezes. I can move the cursor and if i play any video it keeps playing but my desktop doesnt respond. Anyone has similar problem? ps.Im asking in the list instead of filing a bug report because since this is happening on a basic package of Centos i suspect other people must have faced the same problem with me.

Encrypted container on CentOS VPS

I wonder if it is possible to set up an encrypted "file container" on a CentOS VPS? I am the root user of the VPS but the hosting company also has access to the VPS and thus all files. Is it possible to create a LUKS-container on the VPS and those files only be accessible by me? IOW, most of the file system on the VPS would be regular file system but the container could be used by me as needed. This would allow the VPS to reboot normally, I could ssh in normally etc etc. I would rsync files as needed to this LUKS-container though.

Looking for the above. I have found sites where you can register the sites you are interested in - as well as yourself - but I would rather run something myself on my server to monitor websites etc which do not have RSS-feeds. Does anyone use something like this?

CentOS 7 : SELinux trouble with Fail2ban

Hi, Some time ago I had SELinux problems with Fail2ban. One of the users on this list suggested that it might be due to the fact that I'm using a bone-headed iptables script instead of FirewallD. I've spent the past few weeks getting up to date with doing things in a more orthodox manner. So currently my internet-facing CentOS server has a nicely configured NetworkManager, and FirewallD has replaced the iptables script. Unfortunately when I install FirewallD from EPEL, I still get the same error. SELinux is preventing /usr/bin/python2.7 from read access on the file disable. ***** Plugin catchall (100. confidence) suggests ***** If you believe that python2.7 should be allowed read access on the disable file by default. Then you should report this as a bug. You can generate a local policy module to allow this access. Do allow this access for now by executing: # ausearch -c 'f2b/server' --raw | audit2allow -M my-f2bserver # semodule -i my-f2bserver.pp Weirdly enough, when I follow this suggestion and then empty audit.log and restart my server, I still get the exact same error again. Which makes Fail2ban unusable with SELinux in enforcing mode in the current state. Any suggestions ? vmware tools do not start on EL6 / upstart init

Hi all, I got two CentOS6 guest vms handed over that run under VMware ESX. After installing the missing last updates and reboots I noticed that the vmware-tools got not started while booting (/etc/init/vmware-tools.conf), while manually starting works (/etc/vmware-tools/services.sh start). Does someone has the same behaviour. Any ideas about the cause? Thanks, Leon

Centos 8 Postfix & Cyrus

Everyone, I have had two e-mail servers running, one with Centos 6 and the other with Centos 7 using sendmail, dovecot, spamassassin, clamd, and cclamav-milter without hardly any problems after the initial setup. My expertise should be considered not much more than beginner or early intermediate. I would like to create a hypervisor with Centos 8 and run a guest Centos 8 with postfix and cyrus. I already have a guest Centos 8 on a Centos 7 hypervisor, and have had difficulty getting cyrus to work. Can anyone refer me to a tutorial on how to get postfix and cyrus to work on centos 8. Everyone seems to imply that postfix is much easier to use, but so far I have not been able to pass the low end of the learning curve. Best recommendations for a tutorial is what I would like to have. Thanks much!!!! Greg Ennis

Hi! totally OT... Hoping there is a mailing list or wiki (or other help forum) for GWC, but haven't found one yet. I'm working on converting a bunch of my LPs to CDs, and am using GWC (Gnome Wave Cleaner, or GTK Wave Cleaner) to clean up the noise. It works great, but I can't figure out how to deal with certain types of pressing flaws that create a thump every time around. Anyone know of such a resource? Thanks in advance! Downgrade Mariadb 10.3 on centos 8 ?

We've just got a new server running centos 8 and mariadb 10.3.17, so there's no real data loss issues currently on that server. We've also got some older servers running mysql 5.1.7 which can't be upgraded currently. We can't connect to the old mysql servers using libmysqlclient (to be more precise Perl using DBD::mysql which uses that to my understanding). We get a 'handshake error', and digging about it suggests that it's mysql version incompatibilities. Really we need the new servers connecting to the old and vice versa. So I'm wondering how I get around this. Is downgrading Mariadb on Centos 8 the only (or possible) route here ? If so, any idea how we can go about this (I can't seem to find any information on what version would work either)? Happy to explore any other routes, other than changing the old servers currently. Nested Virtualization with CentOS 7 host and CentOS 8 guest

I'm not sure whether this is a specific CentOS question, but I'm hoping someone here can give me some pointers. I have an OpenStack compute node running CentOS 7.4.1708 and kernel 3.10.0-693.17.1.el7.x86_64 which is configured for nested virtualization; this has been set up for a few years and works fine when running CentOS 7 guests which themselves are using virt-create / virt-customize etc. Nova is set up on the compute node so that guests have cpu mode host-passthrough. I have been trying to run a CentOS 8 guest on the compute node so that I can build CentOS 8 images for OpenStack (there is an issue using a CentOS 7 server to build a CentOS 8 image related to xfs options which are only supported read-only by CentOS 7). However, every time I try to build a CentOS 8 image using a CentOS 8 guest, the CentOS 8 guest crashes with a kernel panic, not immediately but usually near the end of the image build process. (I have also seen similar behaviour using a Fedora 31 guest to build a CentOS 8 image, but the crashes are less frequent, and some image builds have succeeded). The CentOS 8 guest is running CentOS 8.1.1911 (Core) and kernel 4.18.0-147.3.1.el8_1.x86_64. Any ideas?

OwnCloud vs NextCloud

I am planning to install either ownCloud or NextCloud on a CentOS 7 VPS server I control. I have previously used ownCloud on another server but have not updated the host application for quite some time. On this new server, I am not sure which one is the "best" and since I am doing a new install I need to decide which one to use. Looking at the Android apps for these cloud solutions, they both seem to have a fair number of critical reviews... Does anyone have a preference and, if so, why?

C8 network install

I'm building a new storage server. I was unable to use the CentOS-8- x86_64-1905-dvd1.iso image written to a 256GB thumb drive. It kept failing the integrity check. I had to use the much smaller CentOS-8- x86_64-1905-boot.iso image and do a network install from a mirror site. That's a first for me. Even though I selected "Server with GUI", the resulting installation boots to a text prompt. I've installed the GNOME and GNOME Applications groups, and I can get to them by typing 'startx'. I'm having trouble running them, due, I'm sure, largely to my ignorance. Centos 8 hardware compatibility testing

With Centos 7 I've used the Live Image in stores like Staples to test (mostly) laptops for compatibility simply by booting the computer off of a flash drive and getting the desktop up and trying stuff out (sound, networking, touchpad, etc.) If it doesn't work, shut down, remove the flash drive and nothing has changed on the laptop that I just tested. Since there is no Live Image for Centos 8 (that I can find, anyway) what's the recommended procedure for doing this sort of compatibility testing? Maybe a Fedora live image? Thanks Robert, I was doing that but it was still renaming to ens*. However, I now know why, and have fixed it. For those who are interested, the problem was that when I created the base image from a kickstart I didn't pass net.ifnames=0 to virt-create, and I ended up with an image that had forgotten about eth0 completely. I have now redone the kickstart with net.ifnames=0 and all is well. I have built a CentOS 8 base image from a kickstart, for use in OpenStack. This image boots fine but the problem I have is that I can't stop udev from renaming the network device from eth0 to ens<something>. I have /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with the correct HWADDR defined in it, and have set net.ifnames=0 and biosdevname=0 in the grub configuration, but nothing I have tried has stopped the renaming. I'd like to keep the eth* device names because we have various heat templates and other scripts which assume that the network devices are called eth0, eth1 etc. Any ideas? Is this even possible with a CentOS 8 VM guest? Chris

gpgcheck of rpms / anaconda / kickstart / composer install

Hi all, I wonder if the gpgchecks are done while installing a system via anaconda? Any experts here? I was playing with the livemedia-creator and had a 3rd party repo in my ks file. The packages were installed without any problems although having not any key in the rpm db imported. So that leads me to the assumption that the gpgchecks are not done. How to get the integrity check done? reposync and manual check as a pre composer step? I appreciate any hints ... -- Leon

From network-scripts to NetworkManager on a router : questions

Hi, I'm running CentOS 7 on all my servers, in three different contexts : 1. simple local server 2. public facing server 3. router/gateway/firewall I'm currently in the process of moving my KISS-style network-scripts-style configurations to something more orthodox based on NetworkManager. Scenarios (1) and (2) caused no problems, but (3) is giving me some headache. Let me take an example. The router in my office is a PC Engines routerboard running CentOS 7. It has three NICs, and I use two of these. WAN-facing NIC : # /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-enp1s0 DEVICE=enp1s0 TYPE=Ethernet ONBOOT=yes BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=192.168.1.1 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 LAN-facing NIC : DEVICE=enp2s0 TYPE=Ethernet ONBOOT=yes BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=192.168.2.1 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 Third NIC is disabled : # /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-enp3s0 DEVICE=enp3s0 TYPE=Ethernet ONBOOT=no Gateway information : # /etc/sysconfig/network GATEWAY=192.168.1.254 The router is running Dnsmasq : # /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 127.0.0.1 Packet forwarding is enabled and handled through the firewall script. No need to go into the details for that. This setup works perfectly as is. Now I'd like to move it to a NetworkManager-based configuration, and I have a couple questions about that. I'm using NetworkManager TUI (nmtui) to configure my connections. I'm defining two profiles WAN (enp1s0) and LAN (enp2s0). With NetworkManager I have to configure gateway and DNS information on a per-interface basis. 1. Which interface should have the gateway information ? 2. In a similar manner, which interface should have the DNS server information ? CentOS 7 : network interface renamed from eth0 to eth1 after reboot

Hi, I've done my fair share of CentOS 7 installations, but this is the first time I have this kind of weird problem. Here goes. In my office I have a battered Dell Optiplex 320 PC with two NICs that I'm using as a bare metal sandbox server for testing purposes. The CentOS 7 installer sees the connected network card as eth0. But after the first reboot, the interface comes up as eth1. My first reflex was to rename ifcfg-eth0 to ifcfg-eth1 and edit it accordingly. Weirdly enough, on the subsequent reboot the interface comes back as eth0. I took a peek in /etc/udev/rules.d to see if there was any persistent interface definition, but the directory is empty. On a side note, I installed Ubuntu Server 16.04 LTS on that same machine and got the exact same problem. Debian installer sees the main network interface as eth0, but on the first reboot the interface comes back as eth1. Any suggestions ? NetworkManager on servers

Hi, I'm currently reading the upstream "Considerations in adopting RHEL 8" document. The chapter about networking states that traditional networking scripts (shipped with the network-scripts package) are considered obsolete. I bluntly admit I don't see the point in this. As far as I'm concerned, I've been a happy user of NetworkManager since the early days (when folks used to call it NotworkManager :oD). It's one of those nifty pieces of software that brought the Linux desktop to the masses - or at least a bit nearer to them - since it allows managing wireless and wired interfaces transparently and easily on a laptop or any computer with a wireless card. On servers though, one of the first post-installation steps I performed was to get rid of Network-Manager and all its components. The servers I'm working on are relatively small-scale and have from one to four network interfaces. Each interface has a corresponding configuration in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts, and that's it. From there, I rarely - if ever - touch it. In all my setups, NetworkManager is merely a useless layer of abstraction, and I like sticking to the KISS principle and shave off useless layers. Maybe there's a reason to make NetworkManager more or less mandatory from now on, but I don't see it. So I thought I'd rather ask on this list. Monitor email for office365.com with fetchmail

I am trying to use fetchmail to monitor box in office365.com. Its not working. Is there a "better" way to monitor and inbox ? I have verified all the ports are open, using 993, using ssl, using sslproto SSL3 etc.. Anyone done this ? Got it working. CentOS 7, Fail2ban and SELinux

Hi, I'm running CentOS 7 on an Internet-facing server. SELinux is in permissive mode for debugging. I've removed FirewallD and replaced it with a custom-made Iptables script. I've also installed and configured Fail2ban (fail2ban-server package) to protect the server from brute force attacks. Out of the box, Fail2ban doesn't seem to play well with SELinux. Here's what I get. $ sudo sealert -a /var/log/audit/audit.log 100% done found 5 alerts in /var/log/audit/audit.log ------------------------------------------------------------ SELinux is preventing /usr/bin/python2.7 from read access on the file disable. ***** Plugin catchall (100. confidence) suggests ***** If you believe that python2.7 should be allowed read access on the disable file by default. Then you should report this as a bug. You can generate a local policy module to allow this access. Do allow this access for now by executing: # ausearch -c 'f2b/f.sshd' --raw | audit2allow -M my-f2bfsshd # semodule -i my-f2bfsshd.pp ... As far as I can tell - and please correct me if I'm wrong - if a package doesn't play well with SELinux in the default configuration, this should be considered as a bug. In that case, the appropriate reaction would be to file a bug on the EPEL mailing list, since EPEL provides the fail2ban-server package. Azure cloud images

Hi, My company would like to use CentOS images on Azure, but on the Azure Marketplace, there are currently only images provided by third parties (whereas on Amazon AWS, there are official, community-maintained images [1]) The wiki refers to [2], so I guess that Azure was at least considered at some point. Are there any plans to also provide these images on the Azure Marketplace, under a centos.org (or similar) organisation? If there are any ongoing efforts (or help is needed), I would love to hear.
