Good afternoon, We are running callgrind and cg_annotate version 3.6.1 on Centos Linux Version 5.5 x86_32. One month ago Mr. Josef Weidenorfer issued a special patch that fixed callgrind on Centos Linux Version 5.5 x86_32. We can now profile complex C++ programs which use our own shared library libmdMatchup.so. However, when we use version 3.6.1 cg_annotate callgrind.out.22533 --auto = yes -I/home/frankc/DQTTest6/MatchUpLib/Source, we obtain the error. Line 1 Missing command line. callgrind.out.22533 was created using the command line: /home/frankc/DQTTest2/valgrind-3.6.1/coregrind/valgrind --tool=callgrind --dump-instr=yes --simulate-cache=yes --collect-jumps=yes ./MatchUpAccurate.exe. MatchUpAccurate.exe uses a special shared library libmdMatchup.so Could some engineer or programmer please tell us what we are doing wrong in using callgrind and cg_annotate? OT: wifi, phone, power in India and Malaysia

A not so technical friend in India is shopping for a laptop. He often travels and stays months in Malaysia and so needs to be able to use the laptop there as well. He typically connects to the internet via wifi, but sometimes must use a telephone line (yes, with a modem). And of course there will be times when he has to plug into mains power to recharge the battery. So to be able to fully use his future laptop in both India and Malaysia, I need to know: Are the wifi standards the same in both India and Malaysia? And will the same wifi card work in both countries? Similarly, will the modem work in both countries? And, too, is the mains power the same in India and Malaysia? If there is an incompatibility in any of these, what is the simplest resolution? I should probably get him an extended warranty also. Is there such a warranty which would allow him to have the laptop fixed in either country, depending upon where he happens to be? Am I overlooking any considerations? Thanks in advance for your sage experience.

scsi3 persistent reservations in cluster storage fencing

I'm interested in the idea of sharing a bunch of SAS JBOD devices between two CentOS servers in an active-standby HA cluster sort of arrangement, and found something about using scsi3 persistent reservations as a fencing method. I'm not finding a lot of specifics about how this works, or how you configure two initiator systems on a SAS chain. I don't have any suitable hardware for running any tests or evaluations yet. general idea: 2 centos servers each with 8 port external SAS cards (2 x4), cascaded through a SAS box-o-disks with a whole bunch of SAS dual ported drives, to implement high availability large nearline storage. all storage configured as JBOD, using linux md raid or lvm mirroring. drives should only be accessible by the currently active server, with heartbeat managing the fencing. here's a hardware block diagram http://freescruz.com/shared-sas.jpg This is about the only details I've found on scsi persistant reservations and linux HA http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/html/Configura… One question I have is: how well will this scale with several strings of 100 SAS drives on the same HA pair of servers? FTP Migration

Hi All, Please feel free to correct any misconceptions in my premises as I get to my question. I have about 6 ftp services running on a CentOS system that is going down for service, and I want to move the ftp services to a VM on another network. These are all running on Proftpd, with fairly complicated directory/permissions/rate control layouts, as proftpd nicely supports. First, it appears that RH and CentOS have dropped proftpd since I last looked and are now only shipping vsftpd in the repositories. Second, I looked at the vsftpd site, and noticed a complete absence of documentation (other than a basic bare-bones manpage), so I have no idea if vsftpd will support anything that I'm doing with proftpd, or any information about how to configure anything. Obviously I could just install the latest version of proftpd from source on the new host and get on with my life, but is there any reason to bite the bullet and try to convert my ftp sites to a new, basically undocumented ftp server? Any input appreciated, especially on conversions of complicated ftp sites from proftpd to vsftpd. Thanks, --Bill

Hey guys, Need an opinion on what to use for file versioning text conf files that get updated by scheduled rsync's etc. Need something that can watch the file, so it doesn't need an explicit checkin, and can be diffed by a web front end. Keep CentOS 5.5 from upgrading?

Thanks, I'm trying to keep CentOS 5.5 from upgrading to 5.6 because of my issue with the time sync. I thought I had it figured out till today. I have tried google for help but with no luck. Can someone point me to a page or link that will give me a good idea as to how to stop the upgrade but still allow me to update my 5.5 packages? This is what I tried, that is not working now. xferlog not rotating.

I am not sure how to correctly troubleshoot this. I just noticed that my /var/log/xferlog file is huge. There are no files in /etc/logrotate.d/ for xferlog. This is what leads me to believe that it isnot rotating. Or perhaps I do not have it set to rotate. I am not sure. I am running CentOS release 5 (Final). Passing password to script for rpmsign of list of .rpm files

I am trying to automatize signing of unsigned .rpm files. My repo has at least 50 x 3 packages. But I would have to type numerous passwords for each file. I can not see hot to pass pass phrase to script. rpmsign --resign {--pass=??} <filename from list> ???? Can someone advise me how to do that? Ljubomir

The IRT gave a class yesterday, and mentioned about auditors coming in with squirrel to security test d/bs. I was doing some research on this, and found (and I'm being correct with my capitalization) the subject line here, the F/OSS project off sourceforge SQuirrel, which is a cross-platform java client for d/bs, and a company, NGS, which has NGS SQuirreL for Oracle, DB/2, etc. What I can't find is any suggestion whether the latter is built on the former, if there's any relation at all, and if not, whether there's a copyright issue here.... I had to complete a new VM Host machine before CentOS-6 was ready, so I used SL-6 as the underpinnings. It simply worked, once I ironed out a couple of unrelated hardware issues. It auto-updates and lets me know when that's been done, but it doesn't reboot unless I want to, so there's little risk in allowing the updates. Auto-update can be disabled if you prefer. So far it has been flawless. It's managing two very large software RAID-6 arrays and 7 Guest VMs on a dual-Xeon Supermicro motherboard. All of the VM Guest OS's are CentOS-5.6 which works well for my applications. I may or may not upgrade the Guests to C6, depending on need. CentOS has been so reliable that I'm reluctant to move to a different platform. I've used Ubuntu Server and it works well, but I'm more familiar with the RHEL way of doing things so I'll stick with CentOS. One thing I don't know much about is an in-place upgrade of C5 to C6. There are some under-the-hood differences that must be taken into account, which I haven't looked into. YMMV, Chuck

I suggested to our Homeowners Association that we begin a Private Forum (phpBB) and web site. That suggestion has been well received and we will proceed with that. Now, I have become involved in a much more complex and important project, which is Video Surveillance, for the entrance to our subdivision. I Googled and found two (2) things for Linux that seem to be OK: (a) ZoneMinder http://www.zoneminder.com/ (b) Motion http://www.lavrsen.dk/foswiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome Both are licensed under the GPL. Motion is available from the RPMForge Repository, which is a big "plus", for installation, upgrades and removal. ZoneMinder seems to be a much more active project. I would appreciate Feedback, from anyone who has used either or both of these programs. Pros and Cons? Also, if anyone has other Software to recommend, to run on CentOS, that information will be appreciated. The idea is to have at least two (2) cameras. KVM vs ESXi

Morning Everyone, I'm busy doing a rebuild of my home server and am tossing between VMware and KVM for this build. I already have experience with ESX, we use it at work, but I'm debating trying out KVM for a while. The server itself is a budget build using a Supermicro X8SAX board w/ i7-950 & 12GB RAM, LSI 3081 SAS RAID (1068e based), rolled into a NorcoTek 16 Bay SAS case. Not fancy but also decent enough for home use. I don't expect high performance out of this unit so unless the gear is hopelessly outclassed, I'm not in a position to entertain upgrading. Right now forking over $1000-$1500 on a $2000 system for a pair of higher end LSI/3ware/Acreca controller just isn't in the budget. ;-) My question to everyone are these: -How well does KVM support Windows Guests? I'm already running a Server 2008r2 and WHS 2011 (based on 08r2) machines at home which I want to consolidate into this box. -Does KVM have a concept of virtual switches and and are they tied to physical NICs? ESXi allows me to create a vSwitch that isn't tied to a physical NIC so I can create a DMZ that exists solely within the host system. I'd like to replicate that if possible. I know these are probably questions that I could answer on my own by RTFM but I have already, and never really got the answers I needed. Pretty much every how-to assumed I'd be doing basic stuff and not dabbling with advanced stuff. I also know that what's written doesn't always match what's in the field and you folks are the field. And with CentOS 6 just around the corner (no flame wars please, my nomex pants are at the cleaners :-P ) I'm wanting to know if it's worth holding off another month or so on finalizing my build. Feed a list of filenames to vim

There are some googlable ways to feed a list of filenames to vim, but I stumble on weird results. With my filelist, I try to do cat list | xargs vim ...to edit the files listed in the file "list". I can move to the next file (:n) even though the command shows as uppercase (:N). I cannot quit vim, however. When I do ":q", I get blank screen, and I have to close the terminal window. If I do instead cat list | xargs less ...it works as expected. And with cat list | xargs vi ...(in a fresh terminal window), the editing goes just perfect, but when I quit vi, the terminal will not show the commands I write, and the display gets garbled (no newlines etc.). I customized to what we want, and hit 'continue', and suddenly there's another $800 for a "system common planar" that's "required". Googling only finds specs with it - does anyone know what it is? Some thoughts about EL 6

Many people seem to wait for the announcement of CentOS 6.0, so I want to share some test results I did with SL 6.0.. The actual 6.0 kernel can NOT allocate tape buffers when the server is heavily loaded at least on some LSILogic hardware. There is a big problem of slab buffer increase that can cause reboot/freeze of the server under load. Reported by many and verified by me :-( So perhaps it's a good idea to wait for 6.1 for mission critical servers.. Problem Making Tarballs

I have a CentOS virtual private server from 1and1.com If I checkout or pull something from a repository, it will contain an autogen.sh file Running this and then configure seems to work. However, when I run make I get a lot of error messages from libtool saying that such and such a command could not be found on some line or that there is a syntax error. This happens even with the latest updates. Several people have been unable to help. What is the problem, and what should I do about it? Thanks, John -- John J. Indeed I agree, we are a full IBM shop and after working with there gear for a very long time, I also suggest the same, this will ensure you get everything you need and all the correct parts to get you back asap. For ages disk drives were called DASD (Direct Access Storage Devices). generally, on the IBM 'express' configurations, everything required is included in the base configuration. sounds like you were off in their custom build land, which is mostly intended for bulk orders and everything is /a la carte/. As the OP for this thread, it saddens me to see that the thread I started has now been used as a forum for behavior of the worst kind seen in professional circles. I'm a longtime user of CentOS and merely wanted to know of users' past experiences transitioning between SL and CentOS. My first experience with CentOS was as a transition from Whitebox to CentOS, and the process was as simple as swapping out perhap 3 RPMs and a "yum update". That's it, and that same server is still chugging along today many years later. Both CentOS and WBEL had the same goal, near-perfect compatibility with RHEL, but SL has slightly different goals. What are users' past experiences doing a "hot swap out" of SL for CentOS and/or vice versa? I have tremendoud respect for the CentOS project. The developers here cast an extremely long shadow that we should all admire and respect. This is a bit of a dark time here, prompted by a delayed release of EL6 that was already delayed by Red Hat for their own (probably similar) reasons. SysAdmin frustration is at a high point as a result of these combined factors, causing many involved to question even the very best of decisions. I suspect that the many requests for ETAs are exacerbating the issue that the CentOS developers simply cannot predict a final release date, which is further exacerbated by the otherwise noteworthy, high-quality QA now in place, which is causing requests for build changes that delay the release and cause need for further QA checks on packages rebuild due to deps changes. It's a perfect storm of factors that, together, result in the current situation. I'm a developer; this type of situation is unfortunately common and can be frustrating for all involved, and just cannot be completely avoided! The choices are clear, however: 1) Stick w/CentOS, get a high quality, highly compatible release at little/no cost, with an uncertain release date. 2) Switch to SL, get a high quality, reduced compatibility release (due to slightly different goals and qualities) at little/no cost, right now; 3) Switch to RHEL, get a quality release at significant cost, right now. 4) Complain loudly about how it's not perfect and/or get angry at people who question your motives and/or competence after years of otherwise successful cooperation. I wish option #4 was not so commonly exercised here. It really might be a good time to consider moderation. securing sshd with selinux

Hello List, dont have experience with selinux, but i want to know if it would be a practicable way to secure sshd with selinux. i have some webservers and want to grant ssh-access to some users. my plan ist to make new server where users are able to log in. the homes from webserver are mounted in by nfs etc. i dont like chroot-env for ssh, a lot of disadvantages... also i dont like if users would scrabble folders that doesn't concern them. so i thought it would be possible to restrict users by selinux so they dont are able to see too much... objective is to restrict users to there home (as far as possible) and run some typical programms like perl, php, some binaries and hide all other... is this a useful scenario for selinux? xargs with max each line / argument

How do I pass xargs input one line at a time to subsequent command? For example I want to install rubygems by reading a text file as shown below, however the arguments are getting passed all at once to the 'gem install' command. I hace tried -L (max-lines) and -n (max args) options, but it didn't work. What's missing here?? allowing users to write to a web content area

Hello, I've got apache running on a centos 5.6 machine. All of my users have a umask of 077 set in /etc/bashrc. I'm now wanting to give several of them permission to write to a web area so they can place content visible to the web server. I've got two groups webdev1 and webdev2 which I want one to be able to write to site1 and the other to site2. I've got between 3 and 5 users in each group. I'd prefer not to mess with these users umask settings, but want the correct permissions and ownerships user:webdev1 or user:webdev2 where user is the username of the person who placed the file. Permissions I believe should be 664 so apache can read the files. I'm wondering if I need to look in to ACLS which I've not used or if there's another solution? Thanks. Dave.

bond empty after reboot

Hello Everyone, I'm making an load balance ,on output packages IP from my firewall to Internet, with netfilter connmark and statistic match modules. it's necessary those two modules togethers to do the load balance on connection state. well I'm using CentOS 5.6 and I've searching on Internet but haven't found any package RPM that.this package come with iptables 1.4.x version and CentOS 5.6 still installs , for default, 1.3 iptables version. the package connmark it's ready for default on CetOS 5.6. but the statistic mach module doesn't. the module name is libxt_statistic.so and I've found it only available in build compile. anybody know if there is how update the iptables to 1.4 version in CentOS 5.6 by rpm packages? this way seem that is installed libxt_statistic.so module too. thank.

issue with fail2ban letting IP's through

Apache in chroot reporting every client is 16.0.0.0

Not sure where to start on this. I went to examine a log file today and noticed a password protected internal file was being accessed from 16.0.0.0. Upon further review every log entry has the same IP. Accessing apache from localhost also reports 16.0.0.0. Google is not being my friend right now, any advice? Good morning, We are trying to figure out how to properly provide adresss hints to mmap on 32-bit Centos 5.5. Does any documentation exist about to how to provide address hints to mmap on 32-bit Centos 5.5? If so, where can we find this documentation. In order to understand mmap better, we decided to try to find the Centos 5.5 source code for mmap.c. ApacheDS vs OpenLDAP

We've all had trials and tribulations regarding OpenLDAP and while its basically working pretty well in a master/slave relationship, ApacheDS claims more robust replication, etc...
