dovecot sieve rpm?

Hello, Does anyone have a repo or have a dovecot 1.2 and dovecot sieve rpm, also a postfix 2.5 or 2.6 rpm? I saw some on a repo called atrpms, but it has dependency issues, and I read that that repo is dangerous. Thanks. Dave.

Modify Parameters at system boot

Hi all. i'm trying to modify some parameters but when system reboots it doesn't load. For the sysctl if I run sysctl -p then it changes /etc/sysctl.conf net.ipv4.netfilter.ip_conntrack_max = 1048576 /etc/modprobe.conf options ip_conntrack hashsize=131072 after reboot results cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_max 65536 cat /sys/module/nf_conntrack/parameters/hashsize 16384 expected results cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_max 1048576 cat /sys/module/nf_conntrack/parameters/hashsize 131072 Fred -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Obscure behavior with filesystem update

I've been getting weird results with the recent filesystem update. It appears to be hanging at the transaction test stage endlessly. I can close the ssh connection and the update still goes on. When I use screen I cannot reattach after logout because the screen still shows as attached and I have to use -D -RR to get back to it. Sometimes it succeeds eventually after half an hour, sometimes not. Those that didn't I have been able to get finalized with screen. An strace shows an endless loop thru the man directory from a-z and then starting again, like this: stat64("/usr/share/man/aa", 0xbfc82584) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) Anyone else seeing this? Also, there is weird behavior concerning the list of available updates. Yesterday I had a few servers that didn't show apr, filesystem and mysql as updates although all were using the same mirror (mirror.atrpms.net) Today they have shown up. Is it possible this is a problem created by "mirroring a mirror"? e.g. mirror.atrpms.net having its own mirrors that were at different stages of update? Kai

Hi All I have xeon server with 16 Gb Ram and no Swap memory.I am running cassandra server on two node in cluster.When there is high load on server kswapd0 kicks inn and take 100% cpu and make machine very slow and we need to restart out cassandra server.I have latest kernel 2.6.18-238.9.1.el5.Please let me know how can i fix this issue .Its hurting us badly this our production server any quick help will be appreciated. -- S.Ali Ahsan

CentOs 5.6 and Time Sync

Hi, I have upgraded my Dell C151 to the latest 5.6. I have always used ntp to sync this machine and then the rest of the machines in the network would sync from it. Since the update I cannot keep the right time on the machine. This is with / without ntp. I have attempted various scenario's with no luck. I am now trying the old kernel now as I type this out. If anyone else has any links or ideas that I should check out It would be greatly appreciated. Just a quick note about my setup. I do not use any gui. As mentioned I have not had any issues with this machine and it's time until I upgrade. AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 3gb of ram. TIA. Brian.

Adaptec 6405 and Centos 5.6

Hi all, Centos 5.6 doesn't detect any disks connected to an Adaptec 6405 RAID Controller. The hardware isn't brand new to the market, so what might be the issue here? It seems, that the driver is missing for that particular card. All best, mjb

bizzare performance problem

I had a rather strange problem last week with one of our 8 core servers. The users complained the performance was "slow" so I checked the basic things, processes on top, vmstat for memory and context switching, i/o stats for internal disk I/O, netstat for any network issues and other things like network through put by copying a large file (1gb file across the network). It turned out I had an NMI related issue on the processor. I figured this out by checking the /var/log/messages but it was a real mystery for be at first. My question, is there a way to detect or benchmark a system and all of its processors to make sure I don't bypass this type of error again? I am not necessary looking for monitoring tools but more of techniques like, run a while loop on all processors/cores to make sure they all give a constant time? TIA

iptables to block region-specific ip's?

Hello, I'm running fail2ban on my centos machine. It's handling sshd and postfix, and is working quite well. From the reports I'm seeing all the atempts are from a certain registrar's region, I won't name it, and was wondering instead of blocking individual ip's if there was a way I could block with iptables the complete region of ip's. I realize this will cut off a good majority of the world, but this is something i'm still curious about? With regards blocking ip's and fail2ban, which method is better in terms of system resources, blocking via iptables as in the case of sshd or blocking via hosts.deny as in the case of postfix? No sound on HP 8540w, guidance requested

Dear Experts I have been unsuccessful getting the sound to work on a HP Mobile Workstation HP 8540w. Here's a brief rundown of where I am I did a clean new install of Centos 5.6 from DVD, using the Gnome Desktop option and no optional modules. I enabled the firewall, but disabled SELINUX. I installed three files from elrepo to make the wireless adaptor work, and specified the video adaptor using the Gnome -> System -> Preferences -> Display panel. I ran "yum update" until all updates were completed, rebooted system because the Kernel changed. The system now works -- all of the following appear to function properly: - USB connections - wireless - ethernet - pointer-stick for the mouse - the display at its "natural" resolution (1920x1200) - An occassional beep does occur, proving that the PC speaker is connected. However, I when I play any sound or movie file, I get no sound. I know that the PC speaker produces low quality sound, but there should be something. I have experimented with the "Sound" setup, but none of the options seem to produce good results. Is there some special driver or option I need? Any assistance or direction would be appreciated. Drive recovery?

I have a CentOS 5.6 system (recently installed) that, for some reason, has decided to mangle one of its drives, specifically /dev/hde1 ... No errors anywhere, just rebooted the machine over the weekend and it's gone. Up till the reboot, the drive was fine, I was writing to it without a problem. fdisk tells me: ---------- # fdisk -l /dev/hde Disk /dev/hde: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes 240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 20673 cylinders Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 = 7741440 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hde1 * 1 20673 156287848+ 83 Linux ---------- There are no hardware errors in the boot log (dmesg). The only error is that it can't find the ext3 fs that was on that drive. Unfortunately, it's not a drive I can simply reformat and call it a day. There's data on it I need. When I try to mount it, I get: hfs: unable to find HFS+ superblock. Obviously that's not right as the drive was formatted as an ext3. So if I force it, I get this: ---------- mount -t ext3 /dev/hde1 /mnt/hde1 mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hde1, missing codepage or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so ---------- So, is this just an indication that the partition table is hosed? Is there anything, any tool, any way of reading the data off of this drive and put it elsewhere?

Changing default paper size to A4 on CentOS 5 (Kyocera FS1920 printer)

Hello, I have a Kyocera FS1920 network printer, and I run an up-to-date CentOS 5.6 x86_64 workstation. When I try to print with evince or Firefox the default paper size is always set to US Letter whereas the printer use A4. I have searched and other people seem to have the problem, but the only recommendations that I have found boil down to setting the default paper size to A4 in the CUPS printer settings. I had done that already and double-checked via the Printer config UI or the CUPS web interface (http://localhost:631) but to no avail. What is a bit weird is that I do not remember having such problems with my previous printer (an Epson Stylus RX500). I would be grateful for any hint / idea. Cheers, Mathieu

Hi, I have recently upgraded our web proxy to CentOS 5.6. Before the upgrade, squid was running fine. Hi All, I want to know thoughts on if I am being to paranoid/security conscious. CentOS 5.6, Apache, MySQL, running an Firewall in front of everything and obviously the built-in firewall on the box. I have ssh on a different port and starting to use Keys instead of password authentication. I host an intensive website and I am getting about 150 unique visitors per day. This yields a few questions. 1. Am I being to paranoid by doing this? My logic is they dont belong here and I could get mad if someone walked up to my apartment and tried jiggling the door handle to see if it was unlocked. 2. I know I can simplify these rules. Wouldn't RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/php(.*) [NC,OR] get most of the attempts for thinks like /php, /php-myadmin, /phpmyadmin-2.0.8.8, etc? 3. Is there a better way to right these rules? 4. Why does LogWatch show this to me as a 404 , when a rewrite rule is hit and they are re-directed back to themselves? My rules seem to be working, if I try and hit /scripts right now, it does what I expect. Can anyone shed some light for me on my thoughts/questions? -- Jason

Folks, This is, umm, odd. Two, at least, and possibly a third over the weekend, of some older Dell 1950's, suddenly died shortly after being upgraded to 5.6. They're all about the same age, and it's not happening with other systems, but they claim a scsi abort, and the f/s goes read-only. The little lcd screen goes orange, and shows a fatal error E 171, and B0 F3 D0? D0 F3 B0? I forget, and won't be able to double check my memory till the morning. Has anyone seen this, with a f/s suddenly going r/o, on machines that seemed to be running fine for years? Since this is two? three machines, that's somewhere between "coincidence" and "enemy action". mark

Hi All, I am about to embark on a project that deals with allowing information archival, over time and seeing change over time as well. I can explain it a lot better, but I would certainly talk your ear off. I really don't have a lot of money to throw at the initial concept, but I have some. This device will host all of the operations for the first few months until I can afford to build a duplicate device. I already had a few parts of the idea done and ready to get live. I am contemplating building a BackBlaze Style POD. The goal of the device is to start acting as a place to have the crawls store information, massage it, get it into db's and then notify the user the task is done so they can start looking at the results. Can anyone recommend a mobo/processor setup that can hold lots of RAM? Like 24gb or 64gb or more? 2. Hardware RAID or Software RAID for this? 3. Would CentOS be a good choice? I have never used CentOS on a device so massive. Just ordinary servers, so to speak. I assume that it could handle so many drives, a large, expanding file system. 4. Someone recommended ZFS but I dont recall that being available on CentOS, but it is on FreeBSD which I have little experience with. 5. How would someone realistically back something like this up? Ultimately I know over time I need to distribute my architecture out and have a number of web-servers, balancing, etc but to get started I think this device with good backups might fit the bill. A bit OT, but I'm running CentOS-5.6 on this machine (in fact on two of them) and it seems to run perfectly - I've had no problems at all. Except that I'd like to add a second ethernet port, and am not sure where one can find a card that will fit this machine. As far as I can see, it requires a half-height PCIe card, which seems to be rather a rare animal. (There doesn't seem to be a standard for the backplate.) So I'm wondering if anyone has tried this? Incidentally, is there a forum anywhere for users of the MicroServer under Linux? Another system with no sound

I am also having an issue with no sound on some CentOS desktop systems. I manage about 3 dozen desktops. These are all Lenovo ThinkCentre systems of varying vintages, but there are only 2 distinct sound controllers among all of them: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01) On some systems, the sounds is working fine, and on others it's not. It's not a sound controller issue, as I've got sound working on multiple systems with each controller. I've checked the settings in alsamixer and the master is not muted. As far as I can tell, all systems are configured similarly (they were build via kickstart and maintained up-to-date with "yum update" periodically). Hi ! I have a server (Centos 5) that is using a pair of SAS drives to store the data. (Mail server) They are on an adaptec raid controler with a battery backup and write back cache active. >From time to time, I have sever peak io to those data disks (> 400 to 500 iops, > 70 to 100 megs/sec). With iostat, I find that it's almost a write i/o problem. How can I find to which files the OS writes ? On OSX boxes, there is a utility called fs_usage that can reports any disk activity for a particular process or all processes. Is there any utility like this on Centos ? iotop can points me to wich process, but that doesn't points me to what files are the culprits...

SSH using Keys, no password and SFTP?

HI All, I have setup (and it was so easy) using SSH with keys instead of password authentication. I want to turn password authentication off completely. What I dont understand is how SFTP would work them. I dont see any settings in my FTP clients to use SFTP without providing a password. If that is the case, that is fine since the FTP users have no real privileges except to their own web folders. That being said, is it possible to allow only Password authentication for a few users? and then require Key authorization for other users where password would not be accepted for them..perhaps, if they try to connect with password they get denied without being prompted for a password? -- Jason

fail2ban problem on shutdown

Another post on fail2ban reminded me of a problem I had in Italy, when the ADSL connection kept dropping, and only came back on re-booting. (I solved the problem in the end by getting a Billion modem/router in place of the no-name one supplied by Telecom Italia.) It seems that if there was no internet connection, fail2ban hung for an inordinate length of time, possibly for ever, when shutting down. fail2ban and secure permissions

Hello, Has anyone got fail2ban working and blocking ssh spambot atempts? My ssh is logging with a facility of authpriv which syslogd sends to /var/log/secure. That file has 600 permissions owned and group of root. I want to make it where fail2ban can access the needed file, yet not make it insecure in the process. I was not wanting to change permissions last time I did that on a log file a cron daily report kept noting it. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. Dave.

KVM migration and time

Hi all, I have two Cent5.6 systems running KVM in a clustered configuration with Cent5.6 guests. Ntpd is running on both hosts and all guests. When the guest is booted onto either of the hosts, time stays synced. When I do a live migration to the other host, the time on the guest starts going haywire, fast-forwarding into the future at a steady rate. Configuring ipv6 reboot persistence, CentOS 5.6

Hello, I'm running a CentOS 5.6 server through linode. I am atempting to configure it for ipv6, previously this had been done though not by me on a ubuntu box so the hardware can take it. I've got an ipv6 tunnel through Hurricane Electric and at a shell prompt have done the following: ifconfig sit0 up ifconfig sit0 inet6 tunnel ::IPV4 Address ifconfig sit1 up ifconfig sit1 inet6 add IPV6 Address route -A inet6 add ::/0 dev sit1 Testing that with a ping6 works fine. I then want it to persist across reboots. So I added the following to /etc/sysconfig/network: NETWORKING_IPV6=yes IPV6_DEFAULTDEV=sit1 and I made /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-sit1 DEVICE=sit1 BOOTPROTO=none ONBOOT=yes IPV6INIT=yes IPV6TUNNELIPV4=IPV4 Address IPV6ADDR=IPV6 Address Reboot the box, check sit1 and it has an ip address. Running that ping6 command says the network can't be reached. I have to take the interface down and rerun those above commands manually. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. Dave.

Hello All, I want to ask about CentOS and money. Please do not start some kind of shitstorm over this, it isn't productive. I have just been looking at archive.org to see when the paypal option went missing from the donate menu at centos.org. I can't pin it down, but it was there on October 16, 2010 and isn't now, so that's the information I have on that point. There was a great deal of argy-bargy on this list when the 5.6 update was slow arriving. I don't want to go there, I was happy to see it when it arrived, as I always am when there's an update. The impression I got was that the maintainers and packagers were working as hard as they could and were tetchy about being nagged, being unable to do more. Fair enough, but we need not adopt the status quo entirely. The donate menu on the web site has this to say, (and more) ... "The CentOS team would like to remind you that the primary means of substaining the development of CentOS is via contributions by CentOS users. CentOS is now, and will continue to be totally free; however, it takes money and resources to make CentOS available. If you are able, please consider donating to the CentOS Project. Donations of promo material, public mirrors and dedicated servers are all vital to our contined operations. Monetary CentOS is currently reviewing our cash donation program. In the mean time we are not accepting any financial donations. We do appreciate though, if you want to - for example - help out with promo material. Internally it is clear that if the team hasn't put in place some cash donation basis probably the capacity isn't there. But the current team need not go into areas where they have no time or (perhaps) expertise. There are lots of capable money folks in the free software world who can and do accept donations and deal with administrative infrastructure and channel support to projects. So the name apache-friends is suggestive. Without necessarily using that model I wonder why there isn't a CentOS Friends group or fund to which I and others can donate. I can't help but believe that if there were, say, a couple of paid staff with CentOS as the day job, things would not be so burdensome to the devs we have now and maybe we could build on that. For my part, I installed CentOS on some machines I administer for non-profit groups in Canada. The lack of licencing fees makes a big difference to them, non-profits groups are perpetuually long on brains and short on cash. But even so I think we could cough up, say, ten bucks a year per machine to put some payback into CentOS. Given general widespread goodwill this might be multiplied significantly. I have not seen this discussed on the list and would be happy to know if there is some reason it hasn't been attempted. Please let me repeat, this is meant as a constructive suggestion, there is no problem with the product, quite the reverse. Comments? EL 6 rollout strategies? (Scientific Linux)

I was wondering what feedback might be offered by the CentOS community on their experiences using Scientific Linux? I'm a long-time Centos user, and am basically happy with CentOS. I understand there are delays getting EL 6 out. We have been long anxious to roll out EL 6 as soon as it's ready, but our time window for rollout is looming and we will need to act. (for business reasons, we need to rollout over summer, before Aug 1, we need to start regression testing now!) I was once a WhiteBox Enterprise Linux user and switched to CentOS 4 without issue, and am assuming that I might need to do something similar if we decide to go this route. SCSI Target issues since 5.6 upgrade

I upgraded my storage server this morning from 5.5 to 5.6 and have quite a few issues with servers attaching to the iSCSI target... 1) Prior to the upgrade, I had our initiators configured with a username and password with CHAP and after the reboot I began having issues mounting their LUN. Looking through the logs I see: CHAP initiator auth.: authentication of iqn.2011-03.com.millbrookprinting.server:01:9386dd56f7d failed (wrong secret!?) Taking out the username and password and reattaching to the target works fine. 2) One server is particular has a 2TB LUN assigned to it and cannot mount it; which worked previously. May 6 10:55:29 server kernel: sdc : very big device. try to use READ CAPACITY(16). May 6 10:55:29 server kernel: sdc : unsupported sector size 1229280288. May 6 10:55:29 server kernel: SCSI device sdc: 0 512-byte hdwr sectors (0 MB) I see in some of the forums that downgrading the software "should" fix the issue? I need to install ruby 1.8.7 on CentOS 5.5 x86_64 system. I am planning to install it from source, but I am not sure whether this will install rdoc, ri and ruby-devel as well. USB->Parallel cable compatibility

I have an installation where we're replacing a rather old Linux box with a new one that has no parallel ports. The old box has two parallel ports going to Okidata printers. The IOGEAR GUC1284B USB to Parallel Adapter cable looks like it might be a simple solution to this, but I would like to know that it works before getting a couple. Comments? How to copy a system?

Is there a standard way of copying a working system from one machine to another with different partitions? I have two CentOS-5.6 machines, say A and B, and I thought I would copy / on sdb10 on machine A to an unused partition sda7 on machine B with rsync. I made the appropriate changes to /etc/fstab and grub.conf , as well as /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts , but found that there were innumerable errors when I booted machine B into the new system, mostly to do with creating dev's. Also the ethernet connection, which had been eth1 on A, was now eth0 on B, and this did not work. This was only a kind of experiment. There is a problem with the partition table on machine A, and I thought it would be useful to have a backup machine with exactly the same setup. I am attempting to use the Xen Manager and it 1) won't let me choose ANYTHING but network install, which is quite odd to say the least, and 2) won't let my freebsd install iso complete. I am a novice with Xen, however, it doesn't make sense even in the most minimally supported system that it would default to a more complex install method such as "network," or "PXE" why does the Centos install of Xen Manager installation wizard force you to only choose network install? -- Respectfully, Martes G Wigglesworth M. I installed drupal here and it requires user running apache to have write access on filesystem. Otherwise it complains: 'The directory sites/default/files is not writable'. The content editors/developers need write access to theme/pictures folders. So it seems like I can't avoid giving write access to apache user. Any hacks or tips here? jM.

Hello, we are using several centos servers under Vmware. We are having more and more requests for server space for each business application (let assume that these business requests are for different type of services: databases, web apps, application servers etc. I wonder which solution is better: 1. new CentOS under vmware (having several CentOS servers under Vmware) or 2. new CentOS under KVM under existing CentOS (having a few CentOS servers with several KVMs in each) Each approach has some advantages and disadvantages. Hi everyone! :-) I am supposed to get (for the first time) into the world of making youtube clips. I have a webcam, a microphone and a big hard drive configured and ready. The question is: what would you suggest as an easy-to-use yum-installable app that could handle a couple of minutes/hours of recording? People who are about to use it are complete noobs, and I would like to give them a user interface of type "start the program, press record, talk for a while, press stop, press save, quit the program". That is, if something like that exists for CentOS (version 5.6, if it matters). I don't mind proprietary/patented/nonfree A/V formats, codecs and stuff. Anything goes, of a typical amateur youtube quality. I just need something that generates video clips in the simplest way possible. Any recommendations? TIA, :-) Marko

LDAPs causing System Message Bus to hang when there's no network

Hi Everyone, I'm experiencing the following problem, for which I've not yet found a resolution. It's been discussed elsewhere, but unfortunately nothing actually solves it. Here's my /etc/ldap.conf file: ################# ldap_version 3 base ou=people,o=xxx uri ldaps://server1.domain.be/ ldaps://server2.domain.be/ bind_policy soft scope sub timelimit 3 bind_timelimit 5 idle_timelimit 120 referrals no ssl start_tls ssl on tls_checkpeer yes tls_cacertdir /etc/openldap/cacerts ################# And the relevant nsswitch: ################# passwd: files ldap shadow: files ldap group: files ldap ################# So that's pretty straight forward. My LDAP systems are running fine, and I can authenticate to them. However, the problem: when the client boots *without network connectivity*, the server gets stuck/hangs at "Start System Message Bus". I've tracked this down to the following known bug in Redhat, but it dates back to early 2010. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=182464#c46 The solution works: if I comment out the "group" from nsswitch to only load from "files" and not from "ldap", it works and the system boots. However, since most systems (and that includes ours) uses groups for management, that's not a viable option. We're running the very latest 5.6 with all packages (only from the CentOS repo's) up-to-date. Has anyone else ever solved this to still be able to keep the group ldap entry in nsswitch.conf without having a server hang on boot if there's no network? Regards, Mattias

Samba with 389 Directory Server Auth problem

Hi Folks, I had a crack at setting up a Samba PDC using a fresh installation of FDS 1.2.4 as the backend on one of our RHEL 5.3 servers per the Wiki Howto:Samba but ran into a few issues. In the section 'Populating FDS with PDC Entry', it instructs the user to run 'net getlocalsid'. This results in the following: [root@mybox logs]# net getlocalsid lib/smbldap.c:smbldap_search_domain_info(1392) Adding domain info for CMOMA failed with NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL SID for domain mybox is: S-1-5-21-4207250186-2406131440-3849861866 Thinking that I might just have a Samba configuration problem, I continued by attempting to add the following ldif: dn: sambaDomainName=CMOMA,dc=cmoma,dc=mycompany,dc=com objectclass: sambaDomain objectclass: sambaUnixIDPool objectclass: top sambaDomainName: CMOMA samba SID: S-1-5-21-4207250186-2406131440-3849861866 uidNumber: 550 gidNumber: 550 which resulted in the following error: adding new entry sambaDomainName=CMOMA,dc=cmoma,dc=mycompany,dc=com ldap_add: Object class violation ldap_add: additional info: unknown object class "sambaUnixIDPool" I double checked /opt/fedora-ds/slapd-<server>/config/schema/61samba.ldif created in the initial setup steps and was unable to find a sambaUnixIDPool objectclass, but did see a sambaUnixIdPool. However, after I edited /tmp/sambaDomainName.ldif to reflect this objectclass name, ldif2ldap still complains about an 'unknown object class'. Any idea of what might be happening here?
