I have a group of users (content editors) who need read-write access to apache document root. The apache web server is running as user:apache and group:apache. The filesystem permissions are currently set as apache:apache. How should I modify filesystem permission so that content editors can have read-write permissions and webserver can serve files as well? Following is what I have setup now, but I am not sure whether it is a good configuration. I appreciate any comments or suggestions regarding this. <setup> chown -R apache:contenteditors /var/www/html chmod u=rx /var/www/html chmod g+w /var/www/html chmod g+s /var/www/html Add people editing web/html files to contenteditors group. <setup> thanks, jM.

In the most polite way possible, could someone please update the CentOS community regards the release schedule for CentOS 6? The last official announcement I could find was on the Twitter account: /"We should have news, along with a release plan, for CentOS-6 in the next few days"/ https://twitter.com/#!/CentOS/status/60108149021097984 <https://twitter.com/#%21/CentOS/status/60108149021097984> Posted on April 18th. It is now May 3rd; that last message was posted more than two weeks ago. On a related note, less than a month prior was this comment: /"What I will try : make sure there is plenty of info via this twitter account. Apologies for dropping the ball a bit on that front recently"/ https://twitter.com/#!/CentOS/status/50891373703995392 <https://twitter.com/#%21/CentOS/status/50891373703995392> Posted March 24, 2011. We all realized the CentOS developers are busy and respect their hard work. I hope however it is not unreasonable to ask for more timely updates and information regards the status of releases, especially as one week from today will mark six months since RHEL 6 was released (on November 10 2010). hello list! I have a small shell script that I wrote that is meant to quickly bring down all of my xen instances in a quick and easy manner. Odd thing is, it does work on the command line. But if I put it into a script this happens: [root@LCENT03:/home/bluethundr/bin] #virtdown > it expects another command to happen. which is odd since all of the text delimiters (" and ') are balanced according to vim. I was wondering if I could have an opinion on why this might be happening. Identifying physical disks

I am sure this is really simple. I have a setup of 2 disks (sda, sdb) which are outwardly identical, and are mirrors of each other. Together they form 3 raid1 devices. Both disks can boot. Now sda has bad sectors, and I should replace it. But which one of the physical disks is sda?? The machine boots fine from either one of the disks, (and the booting disk of course is always called sda). In the messages log I see entries like this: Apr 29 02:21:07 a134-224 kernel: ata2: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) By noticing which SATA link (ata1, ata2) is up and which is down, I can find out which physical disk is connected to ata1 and which to ata2. If both disks are connected, will the hd in ata1 become sda, and the hd in ata2 become sdb?? - Jussi

Hello CentOS list, I have been looking for a list of hardware that is supported by the Centos kernel and its modules. I couldn't find anything in the documentation at Centos nor at RH. Google didn't bring up anything either. Is there any list or will I need to browse the source code directories? Just for clarification, I am not looking for "certified" hardware. Is it possible to assign multiple IP addresses to a bridge the same way ethernet devices can? The purpose is to accept incoming traffic for multiple public IP. 1 Physical NIC -> br0 (accepts incoming traffic for x.x.x.2 to x.x.x.5) Then 3 different virtual interfaces are connected to this bridge 1. eth0 (x.x.x.2) 2. eth1 (x.x.x.3) 3. eth2 (x.x.x.4)

running kvm and vnc same time

Hi all, I am trying to run kvm (which works) on my desktop. then when I vnc into my desktop I can use everything as normal except the kvm window. It messes up. Its like the mouse isnt really when its supposed to be or something. Anyone ran into this? I am using 5.6 x86_64. Thanks, Jerry

Hi All, I'm lately suffering from Quota abuse at home. believe it or not my teenagers are eating through my allowed quota. Hence, i'm thinking of setting up a centos machine to work as such: HDSL modem(natted to an onboard dhcp service for lan users) -> Centos - > Switch - LAN users Hw specs: 3 GB ram 3.0 core 2 duo 2 X 1 TB HDD 2 X 1 Gb NIC Centos will contain the following: 1. DHCP # is there a way i could use the modem's dhcp service instead? or using a centos based dhcp service is better? 2. Samba # sharing files for lan users 3. Squid 4. clamav 5. OpenRadius # wifi authentication 6. knockd service (anyone tried it? i read about this service a few weeks ago and am wondering if it's worth giving it a shot... for public access to the server ) 6. Things which are needed : a. Ability to separate Wireless router from LAN. (thinking of vlans though as i have a dumb switch am thinking of adding a 3d NIC to my desktop and dedicating it to the wifi ? ) b. Accountablity of quota and bandwidth used (i was thinking of SARG and SQstat for squid) c. using some sort of shell script that will parse squid logs (mysar will help me access squid logs through mysql) and if someone bypassed their allowed quota for the day they will be moved to a delay pool with lower bandwidth. As you noticed above, my whole "connection management" is relying on squid, i'm worried that it will process only traffic that's forwarded to port "80" instead of everything going through the server. any idea if thats the case? I previously thought of untangled, and IPCOp, though i don't want a standalone router as i'd like to be able to use VirtualBox over it occasionally. waiting for your advice about the above setup, keep in mind that i don't mind changing the setup if there's something better to use, actually i do prefer it. Rebuilding RHEL from source?

Hello, Does anyone have instructions on how to go through the entire process from downloading source RPM's from RedHat's servers through to building the entire distribution? I've searched through the web and CentOS' own web sites and couldn't find such instructions. Is it just a matter of downloading them from ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/5Server/en/os/SRPMS/ and building the packages? This is for personal/internal use so there shouldn't be an issue with trademarks+redistribution as far as I'm aware. Thanks, --Amos

Switching to php53

I have a Centos 5.6 server which is using the default php packages. These currently contain PHP 5.1.6. My main use of PHP on the server is to support an installation of WordPress. I currently had WP 3.1.2 installed, but the WP developers have announced that from WP 3.2 they will only support PHP 5. and greater. So I investigated and found that the Centos repo contains a series of php53 packages. I have RHel6. How does that turn into Centos 6?

The bickering here about Centos 6 has made me wonder what is actually legally necessary to re-distribute the RPM files that come with RHel6. I am not starting a flame ware, I hope. I'm just curious about what is minimally necessary go from RHel6 to another distribution. I suppose we could discuss "Paul Linux 6" instead of Centos, if that makes you feel more comfortable. (and not too OT) Suppose I dump out all of the SRPM packages and do a global find and search to change the characters "RedHat" to "Paul". What else would I have to do? Which of the RPM files in RH6 have "proprietary" software in them? Those cannot be re-distributed as is? I figure there must be something, because I installed the test version of SL6 back in January and it locked up in disk recognition, whereas RH6 did not. So the Rhel 6 folks know some secrets stuff. So, obviously, to create Centos 6, oops, Paul Linux 6, I have to isolate the non-GPL software and then replace it with something workable. After that, what am I legally required to do? As far as all of the other RPM packages are concerned, couldn't they be redistributed exactly as they are, without any modification at all? In Centos-devel, it appears to me most of the discussion is about "re-branding", going through the packages and changing "RedHat" to "Centos" and swapping out icons. Is that legally necessary? In my memory, there was a Linux distro called Mandrake and it was exactly the same as RH for i386, except they re-compiled with gcc options for i686. I recall that in many of the RPM packages in Mandrake, they did not bother to replace "RedHat" with some other name. PJ -- Paul E. CentOS just announced an exim FASTTRACK package http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-announce/2011-April/017438.html http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2011-0443.html While I am not interested in local_scan() or man pages, Bugzilla #606272 looks mysterious because I can not find information about it. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=606272 The only information I see is comment 16 which is referring back to the RHBA. Does anyone have some insight ? What is #606272 about ? Maybe I should ask Upstream Vendor ? Before that, I tried sending two emails (25th and 26th Apr) to the KVM list with some details, hoping to get some advice. But each of these failed to materialize on the kvm list for unknown reasons. So I resorted to posting to the CentOS list, where I did get some response for which I'm very thankful. The rant post came when despite the additional advice which helped me get a little further, I keep running into unexpected brickwalls like anaconda not seeing the "dvd" (mounted ISO specified using --location) that it just booted from. I have a centos 5.6 server that has xen domUs installed on their on logical volumes. These logical volumes contain their own volume groups and again their own logical volumes. That's why I use hostnames instead of generic volume group names. You could vgrename the volume, but the domU won't boot afterwards unless you rename it back and I don't know if it will let you if the vg name already exists. LVM should really use the UUID if the vg name collides or allow it to be imported under a different name temporarily. You could rename your system vg and of course change fstab to match and remake the initrd, then you would be able to load one domU vg at a time. -Ross

Setting up a GUI remote access

Currently I have VNC running on my Windows desktop with Samba providing access to my Linux server. Since Linux is more reliable than Windows, I would like to be able to access my Linux (Centos 5.5) via my Windows notebook - hopefully via VNC or some similar application and then access the Windows desktop (if it is not locked up :-) ) with Samba. After reading through the libvirt site, I started writing the domain definition manually. Through trial and error, comparison with what virt-install generated and the online examples, I got a working xml. Just for the record, virsh --version reports 0.8.1 For the benefits of other newbies, my discovery so far is that 1. No-activity after the guest VM started Originally, when I specified the CentOS DVD ISO, the guest will load and then do nothing but chew up 100% CPU cycle on the allocated 1 vcpu for quite some time. Subsequently, it appeared that mounting the ISO as loop back is the solution. This seemed to imply that libvirt or KVM couldn't boot a guest from ISO... which didn't quite make sense. I ran into the issue when using my manually generated XML, it turned out that the reason was the permissions (644) on vmlinuz and initrd.img on the DVD. By copying the two files to local disk, changing the permissions and using the <initrd> and <kernel> options, I was able to boot the guest. I was curious how virt-install got around this and learnt that I could dump the config from a running machine. It turns out that virt-install didn't exactly use the .xml it created, it added stuff to the running version. Importantly making a temporary copy of initrd.img and vmlinuz. I think the ISO problem with virt-install may be that it was unable to mount the ISO to copy these files despite me running it as root. 2. Anaconda couldn't see the DVD Which was my rant earlier, since it sounded really stupid that the installer couldn't see the disc it just booted off. Now, with #1 solved, it seems that anaconda wasn't booting off the disc after all. However, the interesting thing here is that once I got past #1, My guest could install from the DVD. After comparing the xml files, it seems the problem is virt-install did not save the path to the ISO/mounted DVD. Under the <disk> element, there wasn't a source. With my manually generated xml, specifying the ISO as the source worked. But the virt-installed anaconda was complaining I don't have any hard disks or cdroms. Not that there was no disk in the drive. Everytime I picked an option like install media in HDD or CDROM, it prompted me no device, do I want to install a driver. Since the hard disk definition appears to be the same, I'm not sure why that happened with virt-install's xml but not mine. So right now, I managed to get the OS installed, rebooting it required removing the initrd and kernel entry as well as the source so that it would boot from the image disk. Only problem is... networking still isn't working although brctl show on the host shows that a vnet0 had been created and attached to the bridge. Any pointers would be appreciated!

Rsync 3 from rpmforge

My brain must be on knots somehow. I try to install rsync 3.x, which I know is in rpmforge repo for my architecture: https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=22214 http://packages.sw.be/rsync/ But yum does not find it, however I try. I have installed yum-priorities. Rpmforge is low priority. Dear developers, I don't care for reasons, arguments, or flamefests. I need to plan my workload. By now I have half a dozen servers overdue for reimaging. I can put this off for another week or two, but not really much longer. There's obviously no point in installing centos 5 on any new machine. So I need to know: is there any point in my waiting another week, or should I just say 'screw it' and start scheduling SL roll-outs. Thank you in advance Dima

How to switching terminal/console to /dev/pts/X while in SSH?

Is there a way to switch the display/console while connected while SSH to another display e.g /dev/pts/X ? The purpose is because qemu-kvm diverts the char device output to /dev/pts/X so there's no further way to view/interact with the VM.

Install CentOS as KVM guest

I'm having problems trying to install CentOS as a KVM guest despite following the wikis and howtos. The problem is that most of the instructions skip the part that happens after virt-install... It seems that something blindingly obvious happens if nothing goes wrong and most instructions continues from the OS installation screen. However, when I try this, I get a blank console that says "Escape Char is ^]" and doesn't do anything useful. If I specify --vnc options, the blank console doesn't appear but the CentOS guest doesn't respond to VNC connections. I've tried connecting on the public IP, on the LAN IP, on loopback 127.0.0.1, with autoport, with different specified ports, port numbers - 5900 since vnc seems to accept :1 as 5901, enabling qemu to listen on all public interfaces and allowing exceptions in iptables just in case loopback 127.0.0.1 is blocked. But nothing gives me a console/screen that I can install the OS. Or should I expect VNC to work, given that the OS isn't installed, or is it an inbuilt function of KVM? The VM guest appears to be loaded, there are no obvious errors, virsh list shows the VM but I can't do anything with them. It's been really frustrating. Can anybody please point out what's the obvious step or magic trick I'm missing?

ssh in while in fsck

My manager reminds me that "in the old Sun days", the ssh server came up first, *before* the fsck on boot, so that if there was a problem, and fsck was waiting for an answer, you could remotely ssh in, kill it, restart it, and answer (or give it the right flags). Does anyone know if it's possible to have that happen with CentOS? It would be nice to have it boot that way, so that if you checked, and figured it should have been up already, you could handle the problem without coming in.... mark

Curious fdisk report on large disk

I have a 1.5TB internal disk on my server. I partitioned this with fdisk, and CentOS-5.6 runs perfectly on it. But fdisk gives a very strange report. I use inn to make internal company announcements and discussions available to remote offices. I note inn is removed form RHEL 6. What replaces inn? http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Technical… Will inn be available from elsewhere? Will I have to compile it? Should I modify my scripts to create and install html files for a web server? That would make article deletion, archiving, and maintenance more difficult than it is with the inn nntp server. The opinions both for and against OpenLDAP have made me take a little closer look at it, but my conclusion is that it is more cumbersome than what I really want to handle right now for the size of the network. I have looked closer at Samba/Wins/Winbind, etc. and it looks like the main source of my current problem is that my Samba network is setup now as a Workgroup and not as a Domain. I didn't understand that difference when I ran across the quote I included above. It looks like if I change to a Domain and configure it properly with Wins/Winbind that I should be able to have the single point password changing option occur from the Windows desktop. I am now re-reading sections of my copy of the Definitive Guide to Samba 3 which should help me (although it was published before Vista and 7, which all my workstations are now). Also thanks to some for the suggestions of using ClearOS or Webmin. I do have Webmin installed and use it for some of my administrative functions. So if I do try playing around with OpenLDAP I will certainly see if it will reduce my learning curve on getting it setup properly. With the new gateway box that I mentioned above, I have been planning on installing ClearOS on it, so I will take a look at how it might be used to learn about using LDAP. slow sendmail going out

I am trying to find a way to "speed" up sendmail going out of my box. I am setting SMART_HOST. Dont get me wrong email does go out it just takes like 3-4 minutes to get there. When I do "mail xxxx(a)y.com" and send it the /var/log/maillog file shows the connection and shows the relay as [127.0.0.1]. Then it just SITS there for a long time. Then it picks up the mail and delivers it. No errors are show, no timeouts etc... My box does not have an MX record as I am behind the firewall (192.168.1.X). I have set the /etc/sysconfig/sendmail QUEUE=1m but that does not seem to help either. There is nothing else happening on my box so that is not slowing anything down. I've done some google'ing, some playing and nothing has helped. I tried adding the service.switch to sendmail.mc, I tried temporarily taking out dns from nsswitch.conf - and nothing seemed to help. How can I get emails exiting my box faster. Jerry

Installing/configuring a second HD

My old server was Centos 4.8 and it is on a HD that is NOT connected. The new Centos 5.5 is the active HD. Everything appears to be working, so my intent is to jumper the old HD as a slave, wipe it clean and have it as a backup drive. Since my Linux skills are minimum, I thought it best to heck with the experts to find the best (safest) way to accomplish my goal. I assume that the old drive will auto-mount, however I am not sure if it will be identified as a separate due to the Volume system (I am not near my server at the moment and I cannot remember the exact name that is used for the HD configuration). Hi all, I ran into this bug on my NFS server which is serving an XFS fs; https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=616833 It was suggested using bind mounts. My current fstab on my server is; /dev/sdc1 /SHARE xfs defaults,noatime,nodiratime,logbufs=8,uquota 1 2 Unsure how to integrate bind mounts in this scheme to see if I can avoid this bug until it is fixed. Any ideas? - aurf

cups drivers for printing pdf and tif

List, I updated a gateway/router computer with Centos 5.6 and lost the ability to print pdf and tif files with the command "lp -d printer img.tif" This new unit replaced a Fedora 5 system that had been working well, and is still able to print pdf and tif files withing the same network. I have other Centos 5.6 gateway's at different facilities that print the pdf and tif files without a problem. All of these 5.6 systems have been updated without a problem. hpijs-1.6.7-6.el5_6.1.x86_64 has already been installed. I am at a loss in trying to see the difference between my 5.6 machines and would appreciate some advice as to where to look. Thanks much for your help. Greg Ennis
