Intel DH67BL + CentOS 5.5 IRQ #177 nobody cared

Hello, We have built a couple of CentOS 5.5 systems on the Intel DH67BL (Sandy Bridge) motherboard and overall they work pretty well. I'm having one problem which keeps cropping up and that is an error message that says: IRQ 177 nobody cared (try booting with the irqpoll option) report bad irq, references CPU idle then it references usb_hcd_irq and e1000_intr then it disables the add-on PCI E1000 card and disconnects itself from the network. I'm assuming what is happening here is the USB controller and the add-on E1000 controller we put in are having an old school IRQ conflict, the question is why and how can I avoid it? I have tried disabling all of the extra stuff in the BIOS that I could, and this still happens fairly frequently. Any advice would be great. thanks, -Drew

kernel panic on 5.6

I am getting: kernel panic unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0) This is just a normal box that I have use many a time to test install. Basic one disk SATA 160G. Been using it for at least a year. Is this that glibc issue hitting me? or something else? Thanks, Jerry

I have several repositories set up on the server which are the following: base updates extras centosplus contrib c5-testing All are enabled. When I do a yum search for unrar, nothing comes up. 40TB File System Recommendations

Hello All I have a brand spanking new 40TB Hardware Raid6 array to play around with. I am looking for recommendations for which filesystem to use. I am trying not to break this up into multiple file systems as we are going to use it for backups. Other factors is performance and reliability. CentOS 5.6 array is /dev/sdb So here is what I have tried so far reiserfs is limited to 16TB ext4 does not seem to be fully baked in 5.6 yet. parted 1.8 does not support creating ext4 (strange) Anyone work with large filesystems like this that have any suggestions/recommendations? -- Matthew Feinberg matthew(a)choopa.com AIM: matthewchoopa

Gnome Notification Applet

I tried out Scientific Linux 6 Live to see (basically) what I can expect with CentOS 6 and was pleased to find that everything looks pretty familiar and is easily customizable to make it look and feel like 5.6 -- except for one thing that I also noticed in Ubuntu's newest beta (my Dad uses Linux Mint). For whatever reason, Gnome has decided to put the Volume Control and Network Manager in the Notification Applet. (It's worse with Ubuntu, they've put four applets there by default.) On my desktop I don't display the Network Manager, but I like the Volume Control to be there (on the very right beside the clock). I spent most of my "trial time" with SL 6 trying to figure out how to separate these two applets from the Notification Applet -- without success. Is there a configuration file I can change or a configuration program I can run to customize this? I realize it's not a huge deal, but it's an irritant. Why does Gnome want to limit the ability to customize? Thanks for any pointers. -- RonB -- Using CentOS 5.6

I thought adding the ">/dev/null 2>&1" would stop that but it does not. Is there anyway to get the script to ignore the error and not alert root? Another solution is to install a newer version of mrtg from source which supposedly resolves the issue but I would rather just ignore the error for now until a newer 64bit rpm comes out since its not hurting anything except the annoying warning messages.

To PAE or not to PAE...

Hi, I was wondering if anyone would know the cons of running a PAE kernel...? I have a 4GB pc and was wondering if it was worth going the PAE way to gain those exta 700MB... In the past, I heard that these 700MB were normally reserved for bios or chipset stuff... And that running in PAE would slow down some processes. By the way, I know 64 bits would solve this dilemn but right now I am 32bits... Thx, JD

Two cleanly installed CentOS 5.6 servers but with different Xen kernel versions

Hello, Earlier this week I installed a test server with CentOS 5.6 with Virtualization enabled during the installer. Today I installed another server using the same method (they are identical servers). I just did a yum update and I found something curious. Both servers have a different kernel. Server 1 is at 9.1 version and server 2 at 5.1. How can this be? How to I get the latest version on server 2? If I run yum update there are none available. [Reposted now I've joined the list, so I hopefully don't get moderated out] Hi, I've upgraded lots of machines to 5.6 (thanks!) and there was one particular machine that I'd also like to upgrade to PHP 5.3. Unfortunately it seems I can't. On the machine I have php-mssql installed, and it appears that there is no php53-mssql. php-mssql is built from the php-extras SRPM, so is there going to be a php53-extras SRPM? I've checked upstream, and they also don't have a php53-mssql package, so if there _were_ to be solved it'd have to be in the 'Extras' repository I guess... More PHP fun! I can see in the spec files that php-mcrypt support was removed by Redhat. I tried to find out why but I don't have sufficient access to redhat bugzilla. I am wondering if it is actually necessary as I have also run across a post or two that indicates applications that rely on mcrypt still work with the new php53. Perhaps mcrypt was superceded by another module or PHP core code?

Hi. There does not seem to be a php53-eaccelerator in standard Centos yum channels, from what I can see. That is a mainstay for us. Has anyone found that any particular php53-eacclerator from other locations play well with it? Thanks.

What's the current state of the art with this black magic? It looks like there are a vast number of tuning options and the ones that typically show up in advice are: socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY read raw = yes write raw = yes oplocks = yes max xmit = 65535 dead time = 15 getwd cache = yes some of which may be the defaults anyway. For a few days I can't boot a server in graphical mode. The screen goes black and a have a CUI login. I can login a user and at this point 'startx' get the graphical interface up in /etc/inittab/ x: 5:respawn: /etc.X11/prefdm -nodaemon and xdmcp is alivre On this server we have 12 stations drived by LTSP as a terminal server. We can boot the stations to a point where the X graphical interface doesn't come up and the terminal stays with a grey screen with a big X in the center. apcupsd doesn't work with new APC UPS's. APC has changed to some proprietary protocol, microlink?, for talking to their UPS's, so apcupsd doesn't work any more or at least not fully. There has been some discussion about this issue on the apcupsd users email list.

bizarre system slowness

Running v5 64bit on a Dell 1950. A cluster of 3 DB machines, identical hardware. One of them suddenly became slower 2 weeks ago. tar -zxf with a large file on this machine takes 1.5 minutes, but takes only 10 seconds on any of its siblings. CPU usage seems high while untarring, with lots of user and sys cycles being used, but almost no wait cycles. It doesn't matter whether I untar on a local disk, or on a fiber channel SAN volume, it's slow anyway. scp a file over the network is slow too: 6 MB/s to this machine, 70 MB/s to its siblings. However, this is just as fast on all systems, including the "sick" one: # time dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null bs=1M count=100000 100000+0 records in 100000+0 records out 104857600000 bytes (105 GB) copied, 2.59213 seconds, 40.5 GB/s real 0m2.600s user 0m0.025s sys 0m2.550s /proc/cpuinfo looks fine. Nothing suspect in dmesg. Reboot doesn't fix it. Power off / power on doesn't fix it. Single mode is slow too, and I tried a couple different kernels. Dell's online diagnostics program could find nothing wrong with it. /var/log/messages was full of "ntpd[7313]: frequency error -1707 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM" messages. There was a lot of messages about "the system limit for the maximum number of semaphore sets has been exceeded"; there was indeed a lot of leftover semaphores created by NRPE (owned by the nagios user); I deleted them but nothing has changed, so they were a symptom, not the cause. I'm still kind of hoping it's a software issue, but chances are slim. OTOH, I can't imagine any hardware problem that would exhibit these symptoms. When I first booted with the previous kernel I looked at /var/log/messages and didn't see anything useful. Today, I selected the previous kernel from the grub screen and looked at /var/log/Xorg.0.log. The date in the file was today, so that was from the current boot, not from the time it failed to give the login screen. I edited inittab to default to runlevel 3. I got the runlevel 3 login prompt, did startx, and the GUI came up. I restored the runlevel 5 default in inittab and rebooted letting the new kernel get selected by default. The login screen came up. It must have had something to do with the initialization of X on the first boot under 5.6. Your suggestions helped. Thanks. Stan Klein

audio recorder compatibility

I'm shopping for a small/tiny audio recorder, the kind for recording in a class, interviews, etc... not really music, just voice. Per usual, a lot of these write their audio files in some Windows format, e.g., WMA. As a confirmed Linux guy, I'd want to offload the audio files in some format that Linux can read/play natively. I've read a sketchy suggestion that there's a Linux app or utility to do a translation from WMA, <http://www.linux.com/archive/feature/127583>, but I always like to keep things as simple as possible and so would much prefer avoiding the hassle and possible failure of conversion apps and Windows-format crap generally. Secondly, connecting to my laptop... I've got a sound card, but it doesn't have LineIn, just mike and headphone jacks; neither of these is good for input, but... Many audio recorders these days connect with USB (which I've got), so that's the most likely connection path. Given these parameters, does anyone have good experiences with a really small audio recorder and offloading and then playing its sound files on Linux? Hi all, I've got a bit of an issue with reinstalling a server. I can get the installer to boot off a memory stick made with unetbootin, but I can't seem to find the installation files on the stick. I have hda, sda and sdb but none are acceptable install media. How do I mount the USB stick while in the installer to install off it? DVD isn't an option because it's been removed for a tape drive. It's probably something simple I'm missing. Thanks

Last time yum update was done on that box, due to Hyper V issues, kernel crashed. I now know how to fix it, but back then we just went to a previous kernel version (modified grub.conf), which I believe now causes my current problems. This box's main responsibility has to do with afs, so installing afs related package is kind of important.. Thank you! Asya

Peter, The ones I used were from APC and are under the product line of Metered Rack PDU, u can find them on the apc website. Here are a few product numbers from that line(APC7800,801,802) they all have web, snmp (u can graph with MRTG, or whatever), Telnet access, etc.. they start at about 300USD from what I've seen.
