Peter, I have never done it directly of a servers PSU, however I am sure it can be done via SNMP or on a lower level via a management interface(iLO, B/RSA, etc..). However I have done it from a good APC PDU that had SNMP monitoring for all kinds of power aspects. Hope that helps. New packages in 5.6 that were not present in 5.5 bind97 hplip3 php53 Do you think it is safe to remove /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Testing.repo and run "yum update" again or will my Drupal 7 site burn and die? RHEL is, of course, the better alternative when you require the upstream vendor's certified platform, certified and tested integrated solutions, industry-leading support, or customized solutions. Their offerings are a bargain when you consider the benefits they provide to an enterprise, especially if you can absorb the cost over your organization's overall IT budget. Although there were over 250 packages updated from our internal CentOS and EPEL mirrors, it was quick and painless. Not so much as a single error in the logs. In fact, the system seems much more responsive now. With such a successful pilot, I have no reservations about rolling out this MR throughout our facilities on-site. [Planned Migrations] I'm eagerly anticipating release of CentOS 6 for use in migrating our RHEL 4 servers and CentOS 5 development systems. Long awaited replacement hardware now appears likely for two of our main department servers and a critical engineering/development server. We will install CentOS 6 on the new Dell PowerEdge servers and migrate existing services. CentOS 6 built-in LXC support will be a vital component of one development server, enabling several developers to simultaneously build and test modifications to aircraft simulation software. With multi-core CPUs and CentOS 6 native virtualization on the new department servers, we will be able to de-commission the last of our dedicated MS Windows servers (and re-purpose them using CentOS), relegating them to virtual space where they can be more easily controlled. Most of the remaining MS Windows services (AD, file, print, etc.) will also migrate to CentOS, leaving only those services which require a Redmond-based OS to run (i.e. WSUS, Symantec Endpoint Protection, eEye Retina - mandated vulnerability scanner). While our RHEL installations have served us well, the cost of maintaining the entitlements has been deemed too much for our budget. We need to expand the use of an enterprise Linux distro but the RHEL EULA requires separate entitlement fees for each installation even though our call volume is extremely low (2 real incidents in 7 yrs) and download bandwidth negligible. Also, the upstream vendor provides no economical way to mirror RHEL updates on isolated networks - Satellite is out of the question. RHEL 4 updates must be painstakingly retrieved manually, one at a time, on the "Internet machine" before transport and distribution to internal networks. RHEL 5 yum updates are not much simpler when all is said and done. The plan is to standardize all internal Linux machines on CentOS. To cover unforeseen circumstances we've purchased a block of hours of OSS support from a 3rd party vendor that is not tied to a specific machine or platform. The cost is a fraction of what we were paying for RH entitlements and is the same whether we have 2 or 200 Linux hosts. Granted, we forfeit the unparalleled support offered by the upstream vendor and wait (usually) just a bit longer for updates. For our needs, however, this is acceptable. [How We Use CentOS] Desktop Workstations: Most software developers use CentOS as either their primary workstation for office and development tasks or a combination of CentOS and MS workstations. Even those that require or prefer Windoze have RHEL/CentOS at their disposal via VNC/XDMCP over stunnel on our servers. I'm always looking for Windoze devotee converts too, wherever feasible. Network & Systems Administration: All systems and network administration staff have a CentOS machine either as their primary workstation or at their disposal. All admin personnel besides myself have other primary duties so having a stable, reliable, versatile computer platform is essential. Dedicated Development Machines: We've duplicated a software support server based on RHEL 5 designed to support software engineering for aircraft simulators using CentOS 5. The original cannot be modified as it was purchased with the training systems. The CentOS version can be optimized and customized to fit our needs. CentOS 6 will give this server even more flexibility. Multi-platform Legacy System Software Development: Using a combination of commercial Linux cross-compilers (Concurrent PLDE), remotely accessed legacy (RISC) real-time Unix machines, open source software CM (Aegis), custom scripting, and a little ingenuity, we continue to modify and maintain real-time simulation systems that are decades old as well as the latest Linux-based training systems. Even software support for MS based training systems are managed on the same RHEL (and soon CentOS) hosts. Transient Workstations: We refit older, obsolete, MS-based workstations with CentOS for visiting contractors. We often have 3rd party contractors come on site that need access to engineering and development resources. It's much simpler to offer them a machine on which to work than try to secure and validate their company equipment. Update Servers: One of our restricted access networks gets all its updates (MS, Linux, development apps, CM, security, and 3rd party apps) from a tiny Dell Optiplex machine running CentOS 5. The server itself is updated periodically via a read-only USB drive and custom updates scripts CentOS will run fairly well on very lightweight hardware so is very useful for limited role servers. Main Department Servers: As I indicated above all our main servers will be migrated to CentOS. These provide all vital services to keep our operations running efficiently for office administration, personnel management, project management, hardware and software engineering, and a multitude of overhead tasks. Research and Development: As new requirements are discovered or unique challenges are presented, CentOS provides a versatile platform on which to develop and test solutions. [Security Updates during 5.6 delay] For us, delays in security updates while awaiting 5.6 were troubling. Our organization must comply with strict DoD IA directives and respond to a steady barrage of vulnerability notices. Even RHEL updates are sometimes not quick enough to satisfy these. Regardless of the actual security impact on our isolated networks, the same reporting deadlines apply to our development and workgroup servers as to the Red Hat Certificate Servers that host the majority of DoD's security infrastructure. With our homogeneous network of RHEL, CentOS, MS Win, Unix variants, and assortment of real-time OSes hosted on mostly legacy equipment; this is quite a challenge. Add to this the fact that all our engineering networks are isolated from all outside networks (including the Internet), and maintaining IA compliance becomes a monumental task. Fortunately, I took Russ Herrold's helpful, patient, and polite suggestion to setup a repeatable "one-off" re-build process for security updates from upstream sources. These updates are distributed internally from a custom "localcentos" repo so they won't interfere with CentOS updates when they become available. It was surprisingly simple to implement. It took a bit of time and effort to setup and document (still documenting) but it's worth the peace of mind to keep the IA gods off our back. It also gives junior sysadmins a reliable method of maintaining compliance in my absence. Hopefully others will take Russ's, KB's, and other cool-heads' example and use the fora and MLs to encourage and inspire rather than to incite and anger. [The Bank of CentOS] The CentOS team represents a wealth of information that can be tapped through the many on-line resources; including documentation, fora, and mailing lists. With a little research, patience, and empathy no problem or challenge need go unsolved. Some of us may need only a pointer to appropriate resources or a suggestion from someone who's tried "it" before, where others may need a jump-start. Like many these days, I'm always short on time and long on ToDo lists but I'll renew my efforts to share what I've learned to help pay for what I've been so generously given in CentOS and other OSS projects. Kerberos/LDAP authentication no more working in 5.6 ?

Hi all, I just upgraded more servers, and doing some tests I found that my setup for kerberos/ldap authentication against Active Directory is no more working. I don't know why... update fuzzed display -- how to probe and force driver updates

Did a yum update on a CentOS 5.5 box at home when I got back from a business trip. Update seemed to run without errors, but after a reboot, the display is grainy and the colors are not true. Have spent nearly all my time over the last couple of years working at the network and virtualization layers on servers and have mostly ignored the X subsystem running at home. So I'm not current with it or the tools to configure it. How do I force kudzu to detect the hardware and force a re-installation of the proper drivers? Dave M

I built a new VM under KVM today and I've been getting a slew of message that selinux is blocking virtmanager from reading the new image. This doesn't seem to be doing any harm, but I wanted to check whether I should simply run chcon on the image (if I can). Virtmanager show up as usr_t, as do my other vm images, but the new one is svirt_image_t. The selinux error says it denied a read access to virtmanager but that it is not expected that the access is required. I tried running restorecon as root, as suggested by the selinux error, but I'm getting a permission-denied error there. (It tries to set the context to usr_t) Thanks in advance

5.5->5.6 upgrade hiccough

I spoke a bit too soon about the upgrade being flawless. It turns out that one subsystem started failing after the upgrade, although it is not an out-of-the-box one. I've included the description here in case someone runs into something similarly weird (especially with scripts calling MySQL?) and because although I have a work-around, I'm not sure (but can guess) as to the actual cause of the change. This subsystem is on a pacemaker/corosync cluster, which as one resource group is running a resource agent (RA) for a bacula-fd instance. (The bacula-fd RA takes care of backing up those DRBD-mounted filesystems that are part of the resource group.) The bacula-fd was failing because as a run-before command on the backup job, it was executing the mysqlblasy.pl script to back up some MySQL databases. After the upgrade, mysqlblasy.pl started failing when running from bacula-fd, even though it could be run directly as root. However, *none* of these components were upgraded during the 5.5->5.6 OS upgrade: mysql server & client mysqlblasy.pl bacula daemons/clients bacula RA pacemaker/corosync After suitable diagnosis, I was able to determine that with CentOS 5.5, the environment provided to the RA had $HOME set, but that with CentOS 5.6 $HOME was *not* set. In particular, since this RA runs as root, in 5.5 HOME was set to "/" (as opposed to "/root"). Since there was no change to pacemaker, I suspect that there was either a change in the way daemons are started up, or a change to the fork or set[re]uid model (or something similar). Ensuring that HOME was (re)set properly before invoking mysqlblasy.pl caused the backups to work again as expected. Devin

Got no login screen with the new 5.6 kernel

I did the 5.6 update yesterday. When I started the machine today, I did not get a login screen -- it was just a blank screen with no cursor or anything. I shut down, restarted and when grub came up selected the previous kernel. The system came up as usual, presented a login screen, and is working OK. There is apparently something buggy related to the new kernel (2.6.18-238.5.1.el5). Stan Klein --

Best configuration for /var/www/html/

For a long period of time, my Apache root directory has been /home/httpd. For security reasons, this is not so good as SELinux has informed me. Now all of the files have been copied to /var/www/etc with owner and group "root". The privileges are 754 (rwxr-xr--), however apache does not have access to them. Should the owner be apache? Group? What's the correct way to deal with this? I've rebuilt a kernel with an additional patch for one particular module, but I'm trying to load the new module into a distribution kernel. Later this week I will have to install a serious KVM setup, and I am looking for background material. Then there is a fine virtualization manual: http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.2/Virtualization/ ...but it seems to be only for xen. I plan to use either CentOS 5.6 or Scientific Linux 6.0 as the host system. Though I don't know yet, if v6.0 will bring any actual benefits over 5.6. My guests will all be CentOS 4 or 5. Disk I/O will probably be a potential bottleneck. KVM problem after update to 5.6

Hello, after updating to Cents 5.6 and so to kvm-83-224 my KVM virtual machines qemu qcow2 based images do not start anymore. Looking at VM console the error message is that VM media is not bootable. Going back to previous KVM version kvm-83-164 from Centos 5.5 they works again. What's wrong with qemu images ? anyone has an idea on how to fix the problem ? thanks Rick

Kickstart and lvm

I've written some %pre code to grab a few files off a logical volume, if it exits, before the disk gets formatted, but can't get get it to work correctly. Essentially: %pre ... lvm vgscan lvm vgchange -a y ... if [ -d /dev/vol0 ]; then # do stuff fi lvm vgremove -f vol0 The problem is that /dev/vol0 does not exist after lvm vgchange. I added a few debug statements (lvm pvdisplay, lvm vgdisplay, lvm lvdisplay, ls -l /dev) that confirm the existance of all logical volumes, but there's no sign of the volume group under /dev. What am I missing?

Choosing network interface to send traffic through

I've got a server that initially was connected to a static WAN connection via eth0. Now I've added a second NIC eth1 connected to a local network switch with the intention of using it as a backup remote access connection via a dynamic ADSL connection. The problem now is getting the IP address of the dynamic ADSL connection. I've written a script that updates another server with the current IP address in order to ssh in which was used on my own home server also running Centos 5. But in the case of two NICs, I cannot find a way to make the outbound traffic of the script use eth1 instead of the default gateway on eth0. There are instructions on using iproute to ensure that a connection coming in from eth1 will work properly. But this only appears to work for when the connection is initiated externally through eth1. The only way I found that might work is adding a static route, but then this assumes that I'll always be connecting from the same external IP. Does anybody know if what I'm trying to achieve is possible?

5.6 is out. That is good news. I did a yum update on one of my non-critical server, and the server stoped responding to ping after the reboot, and never answered back. It's now been 10 minutes, so I'll have to take a ride to the colo... Nice work dev team, keep up the good work. Let's hope that C6 will come soon ! I'm eager to upgrade.

ext4 not on a bootable partition

Just tried running a configuration on 5.6 with ext4 as the "/" partitition. I got the error that cannot boot ext4 partition. bummer.... I know this is just a boot issue and make the ext3 but I was disappointed. Maybe 6.0 will have ext4 bootable. jerry

What is the package that allows copy and paste between windows? I think I need to yum reinstall it. after the 5.6 update I get the copy button when I right click - (for example in thunderbird) put when I then goto a console window and try to right click and paste the paste is grey-ed or ghosted. Is there a package that controls the clip board or something? Thanks Jerry

Hello All, Just a short note to add my vote for a HUGE round of applause to the CentOS team for their untiring efforts in getting releases out the door. I've just upgraded several servers to 5.6 and it all "just works". None of the team's work is easy to accomplish, especially when less-than-useful complaints keep popping up from thoughtless users who don't appreciate the effort, and who waste the team's time trying to respond. RedHat's move to defend their support business against the freeloading distro vendors (we all know who those sharks are!) wasn't aimed at CentOS, but it has significantly increased the workload the team faces. Let's be patient and let them get the job done. Kudos to the CentOS team! Chuck

firefox slow on 5.6

I have updated to 5.6 - GREAT job guys... when I do "host slashdot.org" for example it comes back immediately. when I enter slashdot.org on firefox it says "Looking up slashdot.org" for a LONG time like 15 or 20 seconds before continuing. I have set network.dns.disableIPv6 true. Any idea why firefox is so slow? Jerry

Webalizer and GeoIP?

I have a small problem with webalizer. I use it to analyze logs of a small web server hosting a single site, and the only thing I am interested in from webalizer is the piechart diagram it produces about the geographic distribution of people visiting the site. However, the piechart it produces gives me a very crude information, with 50% or so of visitors belonging to "unresolved", some to .net, some to .com and some country-specific. For an example, you can take a look at http://sith.ipb.ac.rs/webal/usage_201103.html#TOPCTRYS I would like some more fine-grained diagram, at least in the "unresolved" part. Am I missing something, or is this really as good as it gets? I have the GeoIP and GeoIP-data packages installed, but they don't seem to do anything. I looked up the /etc/webalizer.conf file, but there seems to be no relevant settings to tweak. I've even read the webalizer man page ;-) , but failed to find anything related. Using google produced (among other things) this how-to: http://www.lifelinux.com/how-to-install-webalizer-on-centos/ but that is for CentOS 5.4, it is written by an unknown source and suggests I should recompile webalizer and GeoIP from source, which is not the "proper" way to do it, I guess. This is all on a freshly updated CentOS 5.6. :-) I'd appreciate any pointers. TIA, :-) Marko

Hi, it looks like, I cannot format a partition as ext4 while install. I thought upstream has ext4 fully supported in 5.6? I looked in release notes but only found reference to ext4 in RHEL5.6 My install is netinstall.iso 64bit release 5.6 as Virtualbox VM. Thx Rainer

How to verify all dependencies are being met

I've taken over a CentOS machine. The previous SA had a habit of using the --nodeps flag to rpm to remove packages (he was trying to build a small server and removed packages he felt weren't needed). I have a horrible feeling that this has resulted in some required dependencies no longer being met. The server kinda-works, but it may break in unexpected ways; I don't like being surprised! Is there an easy way to determine what rpms might be missing? I'd hoped to use something like "rpm -qR" against each of the installed packages, but that output isn't simply converted to rpm package names. Any guidance appreciated! Thanks, -- rgds Stephen

new kernel = no working sound

After updating my laptop ( compaq 6820s) to Centos 5.6 the sound is gone. Centos 5.6 and httpd

A problem with httpd on 5.6 I have three Centos machines that were automatically upgraded from 5.5. to 5.6. Everything appears to be running perfect except httpd had stopped delivering web service on all three machines. I did a cursive look to see if there had been a reported bug and found : http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=4796 When I changed : chown root.apache /etc/httpd/alias/*.db chmod 0640 /etc/httpd/alias/*.db The problem was fixed on all three machines. Yes, I know that the modified repo files do not get overwritten but that does not help for new machines nor does it help when I change my local configuration. When I rebuild the centos-release rpm I actually modify it so that a new version of the rpm overwrites any existing .repo files. That way I know all of the machines under my control are only pulling updates I have approved and placed into my local repos. It would be nice if this srpm was released with the main distro. Rebuilding other packages can come later when all of the srpms are available but this particular package is important for me being able to update the machines. In fact I usually end up hacking up the first cut of the centos-release rpm for a new release based on the previous version (in this case 5.5) so that I can do my upgrades. It is not all that hard to do but it would be easier if I had the official srpm. Regards, -- Tom Diehl

iscsi-initiator-utils required in 5.6, loads uneeded modules

I just updated one of my virtual hosts to 5.6 and on rebooted I spotted an error about iscsi. Which surprised me, since I don't use iscsi. Yet there it is... % rpm -qf /etc/init.d/iscsi iscsi-initiator-utils-6.2.0.872-6.el5 And they're configured to start iscsi 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off iscsid 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off And I can't remove it % rpm -e iscsi-initiator-utils error: Failed dependencies: iscsi-initiator-utils is needed by (installed) mkinitrd-5.1.19.6-68.el5.i386 A physical machine still on 5.5 doesn't have iscsi % rpm -qa '*iscsi*' % ls /etc/init.d/*iscsi* /bin/ls: /etc/init.d/*iscsi*: No such file or directory It appears that yum did, indeed, install this: % grep iscsi /var/log/yum.log Apr 10 09:24:30 Installed: iscsi-initiator-utils-6.2.0.872-6.el5.i386 The "fix" is to chkconfig off the iscsi and iscsid rc scripts. This is a good idea, 'cos these scripts modprobe unnecessary modules. -- rgds Stephen
