Sorry, that was just my impression from previous posts. I guess I have that wrong. Maybe I am confusing the reluctance to take donations at the moment with commercial sponsorship. Thanks for correcting me. Couple of questions, then.... What is the average current time commitment per week, i.e. man hours that is currently volunteered by the core developers? What would that need to increase to, to significantly reduce release times (which I think was the overall goal)? What would the *market rate* be for the skills required? lvremove failed on install

Hello, I was trying to install CentOS-5.5-i386-bin-DVD tonight and kept on getting this same error and i have no idea what is causing this annoyance and not letting me complete the install because as soon as this error is produced it says this a bug and should be filed. Before I file a bug report i would like to know if anyone else ran into this and would mind pointing me in the right direction or a link to the solution. Verify tomcat config

I'm going to retire an old RHEL3 server and move the services to CentOS5. In particular, the web server is giving me a headache. On the old box, there's a hacked-up httpd/mod_jk/tomcat setup, and CentOS is perfect for the new box because the required components are included and the whole setup "just works" straight from installation. There seems to be surprisingly little documentation or how-tos on how to migrate from the above setup to httpd/mod_proxy_ajp/tomcat. I believe I have it working correctly on a test machine, but am looking for someone to look over the config to make sure it's correct and complete. The desired setup is: - httpd receives all requests - httpd processes all requests for static content - httpd passes all requests for dynamic content to tomcat Most examples I found seem to assume that all queries, including static, are pased on to tomcat. Installing php-mcrypt

It has been 6 years since I set up my Linux server and have hardly had to touch it in all of those years other than running yum update, so I ma rusty in some of the fine details (especially at 72). I located a source for the php-mcrypt rpm (php-mcrypt-5.1.6-15.el5.centos.1.i386.rpm), however, isn't there an easier method to get and install the appropriate rpm - other than downloading it then running rpm? And when should I use yum rather than rpm? For those of you that use Linux daily, these are very simple question, and for that please accept my apologies. KVM has improved quite a bit, and the management tools work well. One thing that requires a bit of skill is getting bridging configured (which I simply did by hand from the RHEL-6 documentation). I'm happy with the result, and see no reason to replace the underlying SL-6 Host distro. SL-6 as the Host is rather slow to shut down gracefully and reboot, because it hibernates the Guest OSs, one at a time, rather than just killing them. Hibernation takes a while to write out to disk if you've assigned a lot of RAM to the Guests. Bootup has to restore the saved state, so that's a bit slow too. But it works very well. I use partitionable RAID arrays for the Guests, and assign a "raw" md device to each one rather than using the 'filesystem-in-a-file' method. It seems to be a bit faster, but there's a learning curve to understanding how it works. One thing I found a bit annoying is the very long time it takes for a Guest to format its filesystems on the RAID-6 md device assigned to it. That's mostly due to array checksum overhead. RAID-10 would be a *lot* faster but somewhat less robust ... you pick what's best for your own situation. Chuck

We seen it said a number of times, if we don't like it then go somewhere else. I suggest there might be room for another rebuild project that is open to commercially sponsored, i.e. somewhere else. This would n't be a 'rival' because its aims would be different. I'll be honest though, I don't realistically see enough money coming in to put people full-time onto it, though, when you consider market rate for the skills required.

updating without rebooting

My new server

I bought a very cheap server yesterday - an HP ProLiant micro server for 160 euro (280 euro with 120 cashback, for some reason). But I was surprised when I opened the box to find it didn't come with keyboard or mouse, and doesn't have the old keyboard/mouse sockets, but requires USB versions. Is that the norm nowadays? Is it possible to convert the old keyboard/mouse plugs? Also there is no CD drive. But there are extensive instructions (on a CD!) about how to instal RHEL-5.5. I'm not complaining, just surprised. I got it as a fall-back for my aging server. The ProLiant is incredibly quiet, at least by comparison. One last thing - there is only one ethernet socket. You get what you pay for. Yes ps/2 plugs are a thing of the past. Servers have for the last 5 or so years been usb only. Usually with a usb in the front as well as in the back. There are usb/ps2 converters but usb/mouse is very cheap. Your adapter would most likely cost the same or more. Lack of cd drive - sounds like you bought too cheap if you need that. Alternatively, pxe boot and install that way. One nic is also quite common. It depends on what you need the server to do. The delays on CentOS 5.6 are causing EPEL incompatibilities

There are significant components of the upstream 5.6 release which are stuck behind the CentOS 5.6 release process, but are now incorporated in EPEL 5 components. In particular, the "php53" package is now necessary for the "drupal6" EPEL components, due to the long out of date PHP 5.1 in the default upstream vendor's codebase. I see that some of these components are available in the "testing" repository at http://dev.centos.org/centos/5/CentOS-Testing.repo. But this isn't published with centos-release. fasttrack is. Would it be reasonable to push these "testing" components over to "fasttrack"? Given our "upstream vendor's" policy of making all the updates available to all the previous releases in their main "channels", I'm not sure there's any reason not to present them, at least to the fasttrack" channel, and migrate them from "fasttrack" to "updates" as necessary. Other components for such fasttrack publication might include bind97, which some CentOS users have been asking for.

Mounting an external USB drive

With Centos 5.5, my external USB drive appears to self mount in that the icon appears on the desktop and when I double click on it, the files are there. However, I recall that I need to make an entry in the fstab as well as some other changes. When I do a # /sbin/fdisk -l I learn that the device is /dev/sda1 and the system is HPFS/NTFS I am not sure what to enter into the file system table, fstab and if other entries/directories need to be made. Default permissions for creating a new user

I know this is a Linux 101 question, however I am unable to locate the answer in my O'Reilly Linux book: how to set the default for permissions when creating a new user. The default for the GUI in my newly installed Centos 5.5 is 700. I usually use 774. And when root creates a new directory, is there a way to have a default there too? Lastly, if root or someone with root privileges creates a sub-directory, is there a setting so that the sub-directory will have the owner/group and permissions as the parent directory? How to limit ftp users to just view their directory

I am in the process of bring up Centos 5.5. My ftp server is vsftp. When I add a user (e.g. brian), the "brian" directory is owned by "brian" and is in the "brian" group with 700 permissions. However, using a FTP client, the user "brian" can view all of the directories. I do not see any directive in vsftpd.conf to limit this. What have I missed? Can't build PHP 5.3.6 with MySQL 5.5.10 on CentOS-4

Remote-logging nginx? (or other non-syslog-enabled stuff)

I'm looking for suggestions as to a good general method of remote-logging services such as nginx or anything else which doesn't support syslog natively. I'm aware that there's an nginx patch, and we're evaluating this. It may be the way we fly. However there are other tools which may not have a patch for which remote logging would be useful. If there's a general soution (something as naive as tailing local logs and firing these off on a regular basis). I've heard rumors of a Perl script used for apache logs. Also that rsyslog supports logging from local files to a remote syslog server, possibly. I'm RTFMing on that. Hi everyone, I'm trying to figure out the best way to accomplish below project and would appreciate your input. I need to setup a web page on CentOS with Active Directory authentication. So far I've accomplished the following: - Setup httpd.conf to successfully authenticate against AD by passing my username/passwd. <Directory /var/www/html/secure> Allow from All AuthType Basic AuthName "Ldap test area" AuthBasicProvider ldap AuthzLDAPAuthoritative on AuthLDAPURL "ldap://server:389/OU=OU=name,OU=area,DC=core,DC=test,DC=edu?sAMAccountName?sub?(objectClass=*)" AuthLDAPBindDN "username@core" AuthLDAPBindPassword password require valid-user </Directory> - In addition, I used LikeWise software and was able to successfully join AD. I was wondering if there is a way to do http authentication without passing my username/password considering server is already binded to AD, thus authenticated. Slow graphics with ATI FirePro 2260

Hello- I installed CentOS 5.5 on a DELL Machine with ATI Firepro 2260 graphics card. I'm using GNOME for the graphical environment but the display is refreshing very slowly, e.g. scrolling a webpage or moving a window around. Any idea how to solve this issue. Regards, Wael

How does Linux Repair actually work

Thanks to the help of folks on this forum, I now have my Centos 4 box up and working, however I do have a question on how the repair actually worked. After starting the Linux Repair, the process "found my installed Linux". Some of you will remember that I had accidentally erased the /boot and /boot/grub directories, but I had most of the files saved (not the symbolic links) and put them back into the directories *and* I did run a rpm reinstall. When Linux Repair "found the installed Linux", did it create a new /boot and /boot/grub *or* did it just use what I had put there? Managing users and passwords

I plan to make my current Centos 4 HD a slave and install Centos 5.5 on a new HD (master). Then comes the challenge of of moving all of my /home/"user" data to the new master. I have some preliminary questions: Is this a good strategy for installing Centos 5.5: keep the Centos 4 on a slave disk? Will the Centos 5.5 detect the slave disk (Centos 4)? Is there a way to move the users, groups and passwords from one disk to the new Centos 5.5? OT LVM question

I've got a situation here where my LVM is showing the following problem: Found duplicate PV xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx: using /dev/sdb2 not /dev/sda2 Not sure what causes this and I really don't have a clue as to what the consequences are when seeing this or how to fix it. I'm trying to install IMA (http://linux-ima.sourceforge.net/) on CentOS 5.5, but the shipped kernel does not support it. One solution is to install a 2.6.30 kernel, but I don't really like this idea. Does anybody has tried to install it? Regards, Andreas

CUPS drivers for wide printer

I found the .ppd for our brand new HP z3200ps 44" printer - a coworker got me the one from the Mac, and I edited it to separate out the Mac-only commands (there's even an #ifdef in ppd language), and it prints; I don't even need postprocessing, apparently... except that even though it knows how wide the paper is (in this case, a 24" wide roll that came with the printer), it refuses to print a picture that's horizontally wide horizontally, it insists on doing it vertically. That is ========= saturn ========= according to print preview, wants to print || || || saturn || || || Anyone here worked with a wide-format printer, and/or have a suggestion as to what I need - is it something in the .ppd, or do I need a post-processor, or...? Hi, Normally daylight date change last sunday march for Turkey but this year daylight saving time will change for Turkey at 28 March 2011 at 03.00 AM so how can i change daylight save time setting for this year on CentOS servers ? In DNS, the person running the domain determines what the "refresh rate" (it's called TTL in DNS) for their records is; for example, Google has a TTL of "once per hour" and my domains (maradns.org, etc.) have a TTL of one day. * As mentioned before, Scientific Linux 6.0 is out. What hasn't been mentioned here is that while SL 5.6 hasn't come out, 5.6 security updates are being backported to SL 5.5. ESXi 4.1 and Cluster Fencing

Hi. I'm new to configuring Clustering . The CentOS 5.5 guest machines will be running on ESXi 4.1 . I'm configuring the clustering using "Conga" . I see that there is support for using ESX to do the fencing. The problem I have is that the guest machines are not allowed to have access the "management network" as per security policies. The guest machines don't no access to the management IPs of any of the hardware as per security policies. How should I implement fencing. Duplicate Mails

Hi, due to some idiot not being able to configure his Exchange server correctly, this list has been swamped by loads of duplicate mails. There were still several hundreds of mails awaiting delivery to this list. I have removed all of those from the mail queue - so if you are missing a mail you have sent, please resubmit it, it probably was lost while I cleaned the queue as I had no way of telling those apart from the reinjections. I am sorry that I had to do that, but I am sure that you'd rather resubmit than receiving close to 1000 duplicate mails. The user reinjecting the mails has been identified and shot^Wbanned from the mailing list, he cannot resubscribe. Apologies if this caused any inconveniences. Regards, Ralph Angenendt

Now that we've got the thing, does anyone know what ppd I can use for it? I've seen someone recommending: - the generic postscript ppd; - the hplips driver. I also see ppd's for a DesignJet 800ps, and ones for the 5000ps and 5500ps. Has anyone had any experience with any of these? mark

The overhead and instabilities of installing the components and configuring these features is adventuresome. Simply explaining to a client's inventory management that *they have to record the MAC addresses when they receive the hardware* so that the DHCP setups and network setups can be done gracefully has been awkward. For a few servers in a personal, or small business rack, it's not a big problem. But even the big hardware vendors can be very confusing to learn all the interface tricks and configurations for, and in a mixed environment it can get out of hand really, really fast. I've had a devil of a time demonstrating, and explaining to clients, why they need these tools, right up to the point when they say "but, but, but, I can do that with the Windows servers!!!!" and showing them, on the purchase orders and the emails, where they paid for that service and where they refused to allow me to install the drivers because that "wasn't part of the project". This has actually gotten *MUCH* better with "our favorite upstream verndor's" 6.0 operating system, and I'm looking forward to CentOS 6.0 with baited breath. The really cool features of IPMI have matured a lot, and in some cases no hardware vendor drivers are needed, It Just Works with the basic system installation. Unfortunately, I don't have a rack of hosts to test this on this week, or I'd suggest it.

Need help in "repairing" the booting of my Linux 4 server

As I shared on this forum last week, I did a bad boo boo when I erased my /boot/ directory without a backup - all of the things I caution other NOT to do. Nevertheless, after trying to put things back in order, today I decided to try a reboot and I get a GRUB prompt. Next I have put my Linux 4 disk in the CD drive and have selected the "linux repair" mode which has put me into the /mnt/sysimage with the # prompt. That is as far as I have gone since I am in uncharted waters. Help! It, the linux repair, has found and identified that I have a Linux system...what should I try next? mdraid on top of mdraid

Is it possible or will there be any problems with using mdraid on top of mdraid? specifically say mdraid 1/5 on top of mdraid multipath. e.g. 4 storage machines exporting iSCSI targets via two different physical network switches then use multipath to create md block devices then use mdraid on these md block devices The purpose being the storage array surviving a physical network switch failure.
