unable to assign static IPv6

I'm having a problem permanently assigning a static IPv6 address to my CentOS v5.5 box. I have IPv6 enabled and the link local address is automatically brought up. I can manually ifconfig the address but when I configure it in ifcfg-eth0 and restart the network init script the IPv6 address is not assigned. IP6 Anyone?

Today I received an allocation of IP6 addresses for some servers. I can 'play' with the last 2 of the 8 IP6 address segments. I always thought, mistakenly, IP6 was 6 segments, because it was IP6. IP4 had 4 segments. However IP6 is actually IP version 6 and it has 8 segments. The other interesting discovers are: :: means one or more 0 segments, example :: can mean 0:0:0: or just 0:0: or even 0:0:0:0: and, a real smile making favourite, is IP6 breaks Micro$oft's set-up. Micro$oft can not handle actual IP6 addresses because : is forbidden by Micro$oft in its 'Uniform Naming Convention (UNC) path names'. Naturally Micro%oft has invented a 'work around' solution. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6_address#Literal_IPv6_addresses_in_UNC_pat… Because : is sometimes used in an address to indicate the start of a port number, example http://www.anyonejunk.com:1234, the IP6 address can be enclosed within [ ] with the port number remaining outside the square brackets. How will IP6 affect the software in Centos and what gradual changes should one make on the transition to a major Internet change with the ending of NAT for IP4 addresses and a more secure (IPsec) end to end transmission protocol? -- With best regards, Paul. Hi, I'm looking for a way to communicate with end users via a desktop app that works similar to Facebook / Twitter desktop / iPhone / SmartPhone apps, and hope someone can help me with this? Basically I need to convey information (newsletters, news flashes / download links / etc to users, but via a desktop application. think of "[URL=http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/notifier_windows.html[/URL]" or [URL="http://www.mixero.com/"]Mixero[/URL], or even how online game manufacturers communicate with game player via a UI / game interface. BUT, and here's the but, I need something that I can customize a bit to work with our specific setup. The basic idea is to have an admin backup, which can run on PHP + MySQL (we can code this ourself) and then app can get whatever content is in the Database on the client's desktop. Can anyone point me into any direction for something like this? CentOS MD RAID 1 on Openfiler iSCSI

Has anybody tried or knows if it is possible to create a MD RAID1 device using networked iSCSI devices like those created using OpenFiler? The idea I'm thinking of here is to use two OpenFiler servers with physical drives in RAID 1, to create iSCSI virtual devices and run CentOS guest VMs off the MD RAID 1 device. Since theoretically, this setup would survive both a single physical drive failure as well as a machine failure on the storage side with a much shorter failover time than say using heartbeat. Or is this yet another stupid idea again from me? :D

Alternative to cPanel

Hello all, I'm looking to setup a new CentOS box for a buddy of mine who wants to do hosting on a server via CoLo, Years ago I whipped up a CP of my own on a Debian box he colo'd running a basterdized qmail/tinydns and custom built httpd/mysql/etc (I was young). It worked ok but time to move on and I don't have time to maintain all those packages. I also don't have time to write another CP or port my PoS to it. I'm also just going to use the default packages (bind, postfix, etc) instead of the DJB stuff. Main requirements are fairly straightforward: 1. able to add/manage domains, ssl cert management, manage DNS records 2. able to manage email accounts and anti-spam settings 3. able to add/manage mysql and pgsql (nice to have) 4. user management - ftp/ssh accounts, password change, etc. 5. nice to have: add a wordpress blog / xcart store to a site 6. nice to have: users have own login to do some of the above for their domain only 7. nice to have: integrated website stats (awstats or equiv) 8. not optional - should have a focus on security Stuff like viewing logs, automated billing, hosting plans, managing backups, bandwidth monitoring, uploading web pages, managing server patches, adding new software, etc. I don't mind leaving off or doing myself. Willing to pay a license, but not a huge budget. I was leaning towards webmin/virtualmin but thought I'd check with this list for any suggestions. Had bad experiences with Plesk from a while ago so leaving that off the table. We have experience with cPanel through another fail host, it's ok but too much stuff and too expensive. Josh

By the way, my server os is CentOS 5.3 x86_64 and kernel version is : 2.6.18-128.el5 It looks it is the eclipse tool problem which cause the kernel crash, isn't it ? Hi Folks, the reason: new printer HP LaserJet Pro M1132 MFP This printer needs a non-free plugin. On my 64-bit machine with CentOS 5.5 the installation via hplip-3.11.1.run and hplip-3.11.1.plugin.run works perfectly (except scanning - but that's not the problem at the moment). On my second machine - CentOS 5 32-bit I have many problems and printing doesn't works. 1. Installation using hplip-3.11.1_rhel-5.0.i386.rpm runs. But calling hp-setup or hp-check ends in warning: CUPSEXT could not be loaded. Please check HPLIP installation Calling ./hplip-3.11.1-plugin.run to install the non-free plugin ends with the same message. locate cupsext brings /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/cupsext.so 2. Installation via hplip-3.11.1.run ends in error: Configuration failed with error: libcups not found locate libcups /usr/lib/libcups.so /usr/lib/libcups.so.2 /usr/lib/libcupsimage.so /usr/libcupsimage.so.2 I've "goggled" a little bit and read that it could be a python-issue python -v Python 2.4.2 (#1, Nov 11 2010 13:34:43) [GCC 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-48)] on Linux2 same as on the 64-Bit machine. Dhcp 3.0.5 on 5.x

I am looking to use the update-conflict-detection false; directive in the dhcpd.conf. It is supported in EL6 or and dhcp >=3.1.0a1. Since I am not going to get permission to switch to EL6 or dhcp 3.1 what are my options? Background: I have a DNS/DHCPD system which its conf files are generated automagically. Depending on which network a device is on the ip address will change. It is always required to have an A record for every device. I see my only 2 possible options to be: 1, trick dhcpd into thinking that the records in dns are its, hence updatable. 2, backport the update-conflict-detection false logic into dhcp-3.0.5-23.el5_5.2 Any suggestions? cronjob to intiiate checkdisk ?

Dear all, I'm trying to find a way to automate checkdisk every 1 month on a weekend. in other words i want checkdisk to run every saturday morning. i can of course change the default mount/count though that wont let me control WHEN it will happen. so i need your expert opinion with the following if possible: 1. reboot into single user mode 2. start checkdisk for all disks 3. once done, reboot into runlevel 3 i've did a certain script that force checkdisk at night if there's a bad sector using the badblocks command though that's not enough. PS: i was thinking of something of this sort: 1 4 * sat /bin/touch /forcefsck;reboot 1 1 * sun rm /forcefsck Would the above work? for all disks?

Hi, I'm trying to disconnect some iSCSI targets, but can't seem to. Logwatch reporting spamassassin messages as unmatched entries

I've recently switched to using spamassassin via a sendmail milter, rather than using procmail to invoke it. This means that I get a number of messages appearing in my maillog, and then being reported by logwatch as unmatched entries. Have a different IP6 address for every hour of the year? Put the IP4 address in the last 4 groups? Hello, for drupal 7 installation at CentOS 5.5 (I have 32 bit and 64 bit machines) I have to upgrade PHP to 5.3. log time formats - where is this defined

One of my servers is using ISO datetime formats (2011-02-27T15:22:15.519857-05:00) in the logs the rest use the default redhat/CentOS format (Feb 27 15:10:21). After a couple of hours searching google I cannot find where this is defined. I know I changed it some months ago as an experiment but forgotten where this was done. the ISO format breaks logwatch - thus I need to revert. TIA

Main question: is it safe, to open a port for an openssl server? e.g.: server side - generate a self-signed cert. time openssl req -x509 -nodes -days 365 -newkey rsa:8192 -keyout mycert.pem -out mycert.pem openssl s_server -accept 52310 -cert mycert.pem Is it secure? - it could be DOSed' [DenialofService] or could it be attacked in any way? Are there any iptables rule for restricting connections to dyndns names? e.g.: only allow connection from "asdfasdf.dyndns.com" and "asdfasdf2.dyndns.com" and "asdfasdf3.dyndns.com"? How could i restrict the openssl server to only accept traffic from given clients? Please help me "think".. Or are there any "production ready" methods, that can do authentication too? [+using ssl]. "openssl s_server" and "openssl s_client" would be perfect, but the problem is it doesn't has username/password auth :\ Thank you for any help.

Recover botched drdb gfs2 setup .

Hi. The short story... Rush job, never done clustered file systems before, vlan didn't support multicast. Thus I ended up with drbd working ok between the two servers but cman / gfs2 not working, resulting in what was meant to be a drbd primary/primary cluster being a primary/secondary cluster until the vlan could be fixed with gfs only mounted on the one server. I got the single server working and left to for the contractor to do there bit. Two months down the line and a few other hiccups in the mix I have a server that wont mount the gfs partition.. assuming that drbd hasn't gotten confused and lost the data on the drive.. If I can how do I fix this. Standard location for hotplug-time hdparm invocation

I need to disable the spin-down on an external USB drive because it spins down spontaneously while in use. The drive forgets the spindown-disable state across power outage so I need to reissue the hdparm command with each boot or hotplug. Where should I put the hdparm command to do this?

Hi, I have built a new PC on which I've installed CentOS 5.5 64-bit (with updates) which after some hours of running suddenly either hard freeze or instant power off. The /var/log/messages log doesn't reveal anything of what has happened. The load has been either just idling or with moderate disc activities (transfers over 100GBit). Below is the hardware spec: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H55N-USB3 CPU: Intel Core i5 650 RAM: CORSAIR 8 GB RAM HDD1: Intel X25-M 80GB HDD2-7: Samsung ECHOGREEN 500GB ST LABS SATA/300 4-PORT PCI-E PSU: Corsair CX 430W I've also been running memtest86 for more than 24 hours without any errors. I was on my way to return either the motherboard or the PSU when I thought of installing Fedora 14 and give it a try. The PC has now been running for over 48 hours without any glitch, with varying load. I should also mention another problem that strangely disappeared with F14, and that was that the Samsung HDDs, which I have in a soft RAID6, now and then timed out (only one at a time). The message log showed a dump of NCQ queued commands, before it reconnected that disk. In F14 I haven't seen any errors at all in the log. Could those problems only relate to C5, or do you think I also have hardware problems and only been lucky so far with F14? Best Regards, Christian

I need to get a second ethernet card for my HP Proliant CentOS server, to attach a LinkSys WRT54GL router to. I see that there are many Realtek RTL8169S gigabit cards going for a song on eBay. Is anyone using one of these under CentOS? Do they work OK? (I used to have a couple of Realtek cards - not gigabit - and they worked fine.) I have used devices from Axis, who appear to be the largest and most diverse manufacturer (www.axis.com) but they're not the cheapest. As an aside, Axis cameras run embedded Linux. The newer Ethernet-enabled cameras can use POE (power over Ethernet) but you'll need either a power supply that you insert somewhere along the cable run, or a POE-enabled switch which supplies power to its Ethernet ports. Several brands are available. Using POE makes a lot of sense and saves a lot of trouble, but make sure your Ethernet cable installation is of high quality. Open-source software such as ZoneMinder works with cameras from several manufacturers, and runs on CentOS. I personally haven't tried it, but I understand it works well. Chuck

Hi all, Recently I realize the filesystem became Read-only and there is "media error" message in the system log. It has passed several days without notice. I'm thinking of setting up a script to grep that "media error" and send email. Is there more elegant way of doing this? Thank you.

Hello I am trying to get wicd to work on Cent 5.5 it installs fine but when i run wicd-curses i get this error wicd-curses File "/usr/share/wicd/curses/wicd-curses.py", line 505 class appGUI(): ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax my versions of wicd and python-urwid are wicd-1.7.0-3.el5 python-urwid-0.9.8.4-3.el5 Has anyone been able to get wicd working ? I heard about some inexpensive security cameras which get their power through the same cat5 cable which delivers the data/pictures (which would simplify wiring tremendously). Does anyone know about these? Do they work with Linux, particularly CentOS? tnx 4 tips.

He wants to know why CentOS 5.5 /RHEL 5 is using a very old version of bind "bind-chroot-9.3.6-4.P1.el5_5.3" when the latest release that has many security fixes is on 9.7.3 . I understand that its to maintain a known stable platform by in introducing new elements etc .. Is there an official explanation / document that I can direct him to. I've installed a new printer - HP LaserJet Pro M1132 MFP Cups recognized it as HP LaserJet 3020 3030 Postscript URI: usb://HP/LaserJet%20Professional%20M1132%20MFP I try to print a testpage: No error message appears in access.log localhost - - ......................... Get-Jobs successfull-ok nor in error.log Completed successfully But also no printed page appears. What goes wrong. BTW: How can I install a new hplib (3.10) . Problem with timezone configuration

Hello, I have a problem configuring the timezone on a CentOS 5.5 server. I would like the timezone to be Europe/Paris. I have followed the steps described here: http://www.wikihow.com/Change-the-Timezone-in-Linux I think I have changed the appropriate configuration files ( /etc/localtime, /etc/sysconfig/clock ), but the output of the ‘date’ command still indicates the timezone is EST. I actually posted this question originally to my local LUG (Linux User Group) mailing list last week and received a couple good suggestions and a personal email to try the CentOS lists because that was what the target OS was and likely would be people there who've had experience doing this. OT: non-Windows only training sites

<rant> Required training from my co is from skilport.com. Sometimes, I can use Firefox to view it... but can't get the completion. Yesterday, I launch the training, and a window pops up, and says "loading", and nothing else ever happens. Oh, sorry, when I close the window, it crashes all three windows of FireFox. I'm told for folks with Macs, they have them come to the offices to take it... on WinCrap, of course, with Internet Exploder. </rant> <rant> Oh, almost forgot: I tried clicking on the "web accessability", which is W3C compliant... and go to log in, and it tells me the content isn't W3C compliant, so apparently only the login page is compliant. </rant> So, does anyone know of a company that provides online training for companies - I gather the companies produce the training to go on the site, or at least they customize a boilerplate - that is *not* IE only? I'd really like to throw that at the person in charge (who I've actually had a good conversation with a few months ago). mark

OT: Ecommerce hosting

Would appreciate some suggestions for ecommerce hosting. Been using, cough, cough, godaddy, for about 5 or 6 yrs but in the last year or so, they really suck. Did the hosting myself for a while prior to going with godaddy but I don't have time to babysit. Seems godaddy would rather spend millions advertising during the Super Bowl than put that money to good use. TIA!!
