tomcat errors starting after upgrade from cent5.3 to 5.5 (/rebuild-jar-repository: error: Could not find)

We just upgraded Cent from 5.3 to 5.5 on a bunch of servers with little to no issues (kudos to you guys) except on a few servers where it appears we are having a problem w/ the Tomcat upgrade. Moving from Fedora -- Advice??

I'm running Fedora14 on all machines, including my wife's -- and I'm the nearest (distant) thing there is to tech support. She's far more likely to outlive me than I her; so I want to install something requiring a lot less maintenance on her machine, so that she'll have it and be used to it, years ahead of need. I'm thinking CentOS 6, whenever it's ready, is probably my best choice. Any thoughts? Changing Root E-Mail address

Hi All, I installed a new CentOS 5.5 box and I am getting a daily e-mail (I am not sure how this was triggered) with XNTPD logs, HTTP Error and Disk Space). It is being sent to root(a)www.6colors.co which bounces, but I have a catch all so it does get to me. How do I change where this e-mail is sent? I have tried in /etc/postfix/main.cd, master.cf, bounce.cf.default, etc and I don't see where this is set. Can anyone help out? Best, -Jason

Can anyone confirm this? and thank you to John above. 2: can you add(extend) a physical hdd with data to a LV without losing the data? 3: can you remove one hdd to add another of same size and file system but with different data? preparing to migrating to new system

hi all, I will be migrating my mail server from centos 4.8 to 6 when its released. Basically its just a number of users with their passwords. Their mail is downloaded to their clients and not stored on the server. What is the most sensible or correct way to migrate ALL the users to the new system? Way in the past is was just perhaps copy the /etc/passwd file but I know thats not the case anymore. how do I easily recreate their account names etc... on the new machine. Thanks, for any advice. Hello I have read that under Solaris one can use DTrace to get I/O request size distribution on a global scale (also on a per process/pid basis). See for example http://prefetch.net/articles/observeiodtk.html Can anyone recommend an alternative to get similar information under CentOS? The problem is how to collect the data about: CPU Check – Utilization, Model, Number of Cores RAM Check – Total Memory, Free Memory, Memory Load HDD Check – Number of physical HDDs, Number of logical partitions, Total space, Free space Running processes – Total number of processes Logs – system logs such as error logs System uptime Users logged in and last login – total list of users Total network connections Check hardware parts model and number The kernel module will check the status of the OS every 5 minutes. The case of the missing mail

I became suspicious that I should have received a certain message, and reading pm.log I discovered that it had indeed arrived and had been allocated to /var/mail/anne, despite procmailrc telling it that MAILDIR=/home/anne/Maildir/ Any idea what might have caused this? IT8218 PCI IDE RAID CARD

I have big problems with this card not working on Centos 5.5 If I run Parted Magic (kernel 2.6.32.11) from CD, then the IT8212F IDE PCI controller is detected OK, and I can access the WD hard drive on the controller, in r/w mode. Running Centos 5.5 I get lots of I/O errors at boot time, and cannot get r/w access to the drive from GParted. Any ideas what's happening, and why Centos 5.5 cannot get access to the IDE drive on the IT8212F controller card? Hello Producers "Longevity of Support" is an attractive drawcard for CentOS if it means the exact opposite of Fedora's "short support cycle" that does not provide updating of infrastructural libraries for very long, libraries which newer versions of applications (like Firefox, Thunderbird, Opera etc) depend on and which wont install unless the libraries are also newer versions? But is that what it means -- ie that those infrastructural libraries (libpango, libcairo etc) are continuously updateable to fairly recent versions? If so, the problem is in reconciling that meaning with the reputation of CentOS to only support older versions of applications (eg Firefox-1.5, Thunderbird-1.0 etc). It does reconcile, of course, if the implications are merely that the CentOS user must compile and install the later versions of such applications from source, rather than having the luxury of pre-packaged binaries. It doesn't reconcile if there is some other critical reason why newer such applications just wont install. But which? I ask here because the profusion of vague mission statements and 'target-enduser-profile' claims that litter the internet re '*nix distros' seldom actually address those real issues. And hopefully someone can enlighten. My complex production & developement desktop takes months to fully port to a new OS (or OS-version), so OS updates to get library updates (ala Fedora philosophy) becomes increasingly untenable. Then there is a further question, I'm afraid. Since CentOS also does specifically target the profile of a so-called 'enterprise/server-user' what does that actually entail. Does it mean concrete security strictures which bolt down non-'root' users or does it merely mean the availability of SELinux (but which can be turned OFF)? For instance, (with SELinux OFF), can a user still: (a) su root via Kterm anytime? (b) Access services-admin anytime via Menu+Pam to control printers, modems, daemons etc? (c) compile (d) have 6 to 8 desktops running (e) call up 'konquerorsu.desktop' (root-konqueror with embedded root-Kterm) (f) have normal cron scheduling .......................................................... maybe more, but that's a start. changing background image

I'm running centos 5.5 - 64 on Nvidia hardware. I am getting video from totem mixed in with my background image when I stop totem. If I change the background back to the default it does not seem to happen. However, as soon as I change the background to something else like ladybug.jpg and run totem fullscreen, then ask totem to quit with "totem --quit" the last video image is mixed in with my background. I did the standard (I think) way to change the background image: /usr/bin/gconftool-2 -t string --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename "/usr/share/backgrounds/images/ladybug.jpg" su silentm -c "/usr/bin/gconftool-2 -t string --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename '/usr/share/backgrounds/images/ladybug.jpg'" Is there something else I might be missing so the "still" of the video is not mixed in with my background? sendmail / logwatch relaying issue - driving me crazy

Hallo, *<:-) may be I'm to tired to see the solution, maybe someone can give me a hint? I do have a couple of servers, sending the daily logwatch report to a central support email account. Some servers do have DNS A and CNAME records. On my mailserver relaying for the servers is allowed. Only one server drives me crazy, getting user unknown or releaying denied messages. Any idea, how to debug this issue? I'd be glad to fix this as a christmas gift. I could provide logmessages of course. The problem i am facing is that i am not able to ping continuously to other nodes in the network. The connectivity is getting lost after 2-3 minutes. we have inspected the connectivity links , switch etc. and found them to be normal. In fact it pings continuously in other OS. compiling a module

Hello, I have a log file with the following input: X , ID , Date, Time, Y 01,01368,2010-12-02,09:07:00,Pass 01,01368,2010-12-02,10:54:00,Pass 01,01368,2010-12-02,13:07:04,Pass 01,01368,2010-12-02,18:54:01,Pass 01,01368,2010-12-03,09:02:00,Pass 01,01368,2010-12-03,13:53:00,Pass 01,01368,2010-12-03,16:07:00,Pass My goal is to get the number of times ID has a TIME that's after 09:00:00 each DATE. That would give me two output. one is the number of days ID has been late, and secondly, the day and time this ID has been late . I've started as such: sort -t ',' -k 3,3 -k 4,4 file.log # this will sort the file according to the DATE field as well as the Time fileld. I'm stuck for the last 30 min to find a way to get the first line of each day (logically it'll be the earliest as i've sorted by date/time previously) once i know how to do this, i'll be able to compare time and proceed.. Can any one help ? i looked into sort - u and uniq -f3 though i didnt get far with it..

One is 192.168.236.0/24 the other 192.168.1.0/24. Mainly i need to access services in the 236. from the 1. one. I have a CentOS 5.5 machine with 2 nics each one configured to work in one of the nets. Also tried adding: route add 192.168.1.100 eth0 before the route add -net, but no efect. This fails even if i flush IPTables. In the CentOS box that replies, i did nothing, it 'just' works. httpd log weirdness

Hi All, I setup a new Centos 5.5 bod and it will be running a site for me. Apache is running and daily I get e-mailed a log from the box. The log today said: --------------------- httpd Begin ------------------------ Requests with error response codes 404 Not Found http://www.cablecarmuseum.org/Car42.jpg: 1 Time(s) ---------------------- httpd End ------------------------- But that is not my domain at all. How would this entry show up in my log? I ping'd the domain above and it does not resolve to the IP of the box or any of my IP's. Can anyone shed some light on this? Best, -Jason

How to strip out the title bar from xterm windows on CentOS 5 GNOME?

Hi. Running CentOS 5 with the default GNOME desktop. Is it possible to configure xterm windows not to have title bars to get the most out of the available screenspace? I've tried to look this up but mostly find reference how to change the content of the title bar; I want to remove it completely. Found a reference to Compiz but the version available through CentOS seems old (0.0.13 compared to the current around 0.8 or 0.9) and having a double zero version number, I was afraid to use it. Building packages using RPMBUILD

I have been following the MaximumRPM guide from here: http://www.rpm.org/max-rpm-snapshot/index.html and it seems a bit dated, but still very good (if fact the best all round documentation I have found so far) on using RPM package manager, and how to build rpm packages. The guide tells me to use the original paths, yet Centos wiki says otherwise. [rpmbuilder@karsites sox]$ rpm -iv ./sox-12.18.1-1.src.rpm error: cannot write to %sourcedir /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES Is there a package I need to install and run to set things up corectly? I have created a user called 'rpmbuilder' under my home dir, and created the rpmbuild dirs under that. So what build dir shall I go for? how to install Linux on an IBM xserver 335 server without graphics card?

Hi All, I recently got some IBM Xseries 335 servers 2nd hand, and noticed they don't have any graphics card. Some google searched indicate they only have an uplink port, which you could connect to another (other model) IBM server and use that as the head node. But, I don't have one available. It has 2x GB NIC's, and what looks like a management port, but I can't figure out how to use it. SSH & HTTP connections to it was futile. OR, it was assigned a dedicated IP, on a different subnet than ours but it's not written down anywhere so I don't know what IP to connect to. Does anyone know how to get Linux installed onto these devices? I am trying to figure out what's the best way of setting up PHP. The standard mod_php seems to not be a good solution, as it requires apache to be in the prefork configuration, due to PHP not being thread safe. Something like mod_fcgi seems to be the way to go, but I can't seem to find a good guide on setting it up. I installed Zend Server, but seems like they are only supporting FastCGI for Apache on Windows, and only mod_php on Linux. Their admin control panel is using lighttpd and mod_fcgi on Linux. I getting it to work with Apache, but am having issues with the missing mysqli libraries. Is it recommended to use mod_fcgi on CentOS? Is there a way to get it to work with Zend Server? If not, should I try to get things working with lighttpd? I'm not sure how easy it would be to set up a config to work with Drupal. CentOS 5.5 Sofware RAID1

I have the CentOS 5.5 install DVD and trying to install with software RAID1 on two 2TB SATA drives. The CentOS install only sees one drive. This is a Supermicro motherboard with fakeraid turned off in bios. I tried the trick like so: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=64 dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=64 Still no go. linux rescue console does see both sda and sdb. Whats going on?

Disk array format for CentOS virtual host

Hello List Members (and Holiday greetings!) This rambles a bit ... my apologies in advance. I am in the process of building a large CentOS-based VM host machine which will replace several individual boxes. I've done the usual hardware research and ended up with a SuperMicro motherboard, dual Xeons, lots of ECC RAM, solid power supply, and tons of cooling. When it comes to the best disk array layout for 7 guest instances of CentOS (mostly 64-bit) I run into the classical argument of disk I/O performance versus array robustness. I'm using Linux software RAID so I don't get locked into a vendor's controller, and because I've got CPU cycles to burn. The intent is to use CentOS-6 with KVM after climbing the usual experimental learning curve. I've got years of CentOS experience, but none with KVM. So, underneath all of this I could use RAID-10/RAID-6/RAID-60. Which one is better for the following work mix: - 4 web servers, not heavily loaded (yet), mostly CGI. - 2 independent Zimbra email servers, which seem to spend most of their time rejecting spam and malware. - A primarily-inbound FTP server with bandwidth throttling. - A batch ImageMagick video process which kicks in a couple of times/day for a few minutes. - A secondary/backup SMB server, not heavily used. - A very lightly loaded DDNS server. Two spindles will be used in RAID-1 for the host OS filesystems. I have 10 large drives for the guest machines, but because they're 2 TByte I want to ensure reasonable fault tolerance, meaning the ability to handle at least two drive failures. This really means that an array rebuild to replace *one* drive stands a good chance of succeeding. At first glance this would seem to be a system which will be doing more reads than writes, so RAID-6 or 60 might be a reasonable fit. RAID-10 offers much better write performance according to what I've been reading, but is less fault tolerant. RAID-60 is a bit of an unknown to me with regard to performance. In case you're wondering, I don't consider RAID to be a backup, so all of this will be automatically backed up to duplicate separate machines, each having tons of RAID-6 storage. Each individual guest OS will do its own rsync thing. Please forgive my lack of VM experience, but an additional question ... I'm thinking of creating a separate RAID-xx MD partition for each guest. Should I hand each over as a 'device' to KVM or is it better to place the guest filesystems in a big file on each separate MD partition? Or, is it better to create one huge RAID-xx partition and just use big filesystems-in-a-file. Either way would probably take the same amount of time (long!) to rebuild an array, if I understand this correctly. The collective wisdom of this list is most welcome. Thanks muchly, Chuck

Files in this directory, should you want to support all architectures, should include pxelinux.0, menu.c32, elilo.efi, and yaboot. Akemi, I went through the different mirrors and was unable to locate the ISO as it is stated as deprecated or unsupported, is there any plans to fix this issue in 5.6 or rather 6.x release. It appears that the latest build from Centos was built back in may, lots of bugs have emerge since them including this one relating to a kernel panic. As stated in the KB articles quoted in the bug report: https://access.redhat.com/kb/docs/DOC-31516 https://access.redhat.com/kb/docs/DOC-38013 the patch is in the kernel-2.6.18-194.3.1 and onward. CentOS/RHEL 5.5 comes with kernel-2.6.18-194 which has the bug. RHEL-6's kernel is much newer at 2.6.32-71, so it does not have this bug. Therefore to get around this issue, as suggested in one of the KB articles, you first install CentOS *5.4* and then update it to the current kernel thus skipping the problematic kernel.
