Google Chrome Terms of Service(Google Chrome executable), BSD (source code and Chromium executable except chromium 5 beta),BSD License with proprietary parts (source code and chromium 5 beta executable, as it integrates Adobe Flash Player 10.1[1])[2] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Chrome in my interpretation, this means Google Chrome is fully open-source, only the flash player has proprietary codes. am i right, or i'm missing something? i would be happy if someone could correct me. thank you!! *ps.: because "they" say google is the "big brother"

Best way to set up for PHP websites

I am trying to figure out what's the best way of setting up PHP. The standard mod_php seems to not be a good solution, as it requires apache to be in the prefork configuration, due to PHP not being thread safe. Something like mod_fcgi seems to be the way to go, but I can't seem to find a good guide on setting it up. I installed Zend Server, but seems like they are only supporting FastCGI for Apache on Windows, and only mod_php on Linux. Their admin control panel is using lighttpd and mod_fcgi on Linux. I getting it to work with Apache, but am having issues with the missing mysqli libraries. Is it recommended to use mod_fcgi on CentOS? Is there a way to get it to work with Zend Server? If not, should I try to get things working with lighttpd? I'm not sure how easy it would be to set up a config to work with Drupal. CentOS 5.5 Sofware RAID1

I have the CentOS 5.5 install DVD and trying to install with software RAID1 on two 2TB SATA drives. The CentOS install only sees one drive. This is a Supermicro motherboard with fakeraid turned off in bios. I tried the trick like so: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=64 dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=64 Still no go. linux rescue console does see both sda and sdb. Whats going on?

Disk array format for CentOS virtual host

Hello List Members (and Holiday greetings!) This rambles a bit ... my apologies in advance. I am in the process of building a large CentOS-based VM host machine which will replace several individual boxes. I've done the usual hardware research and ended up with a SuperMicro motherboard, dual Xeons, lots of ECC RAM, solid power supply, and tons of cooling. When it comes to the best disk array layout for 7 guest instances of CentOS (mostly 64-bit) I run into the classical argument of disk I/O performance versus array robustness. I'm using Linux software RAID so I don't get locked into a vendor's controller, and because I've got CPU cycles to burn. The intent is to use CentOS-6 with KVM after climbing the usual experimental learning curve. I've got years of CentOS experience, but none with KVM. So, underneath all of this I could use RAID-10/RAID-6/RAID-60. Which one is better for the following work mix: - 4 web servers, not heavily loaded (yet), mostly CGI. - 2 independent Zimbra email servers, which seem to spend most of their time rejecting spam and malware. - A primarily-inbound FTP server with bandwidth throttling. - A batch ImageMagick video process which kicks in a couple of times/day for a few minutes. - A secondary/backup SMB server, not heavily used. - A very lightly loaded DDNS server. Two spindles will be used in RAID-1 for the host OS filesystems. I have 10 large drives for the guest machines, but because they're 2 TByte I want to ensure reasonable fault tolerance, meaning the ability to handle at least two drive failures. This really means that an array rebuild to replace *one* drive stands a good chance of succeeding. At first glance this would seem to be a system which will be doing more reads than writes, so RAID-6 or 60 might be a reasonable fit. RAID-10 offers much better write performance according to what I've been reading, but is less fault tolerant. RAID-60 is a bit of an unknown to me with regard to performance. In case you're wondering, I don't consider RAID to be a backup, so all of this will be automatically backed up to duplicate separate machines, each having tons of RAID-6 storage. Each individual guest OS will do its own rsync thing. Please forgive my lack of VM experience, but an additional question ... I'm thinking of creating a separate RAID-xx MD partition for each guest. Should I hand each over as a 'device' to KVM or is it better to place the guest filesystems in a big file on each separate MD partition? Or, is it better to create one huge RAID-xx partition and just use big filesystems-in-a-file. Either way would probably take the same amount of time (long!) to rebuild an array, if I understand this correctly. The collective wisdom of this list is most welcome. Thanks muchly, Chuck

I am having a bit of trouble setting up cobbler on this machine. cobbler check points out a few things to correct: [root@VIRTCENT04:~]#cobbler check The following are potential configuration items that you may want to fix: 1 : you need to set some SELinux content rules to ensure cobbler serves content correctly in your SELinux environment, run the following: /usr/sbin/semanage fcontext -a -t public_content_t "/tftpboot/.*" && /usr/sbin/semanage fcontext -a -t public_content_t "/var/www/cobbler/images/.*" 2 : you need to set some SELinux rules if you want to use cobbler-web (an optional package), run the following: /usr/sbin/semanage fcontext -a -t httpd_sys_content_rw_t "/var/lib/cobbler/webui_sessions/.*" 3 : some network boot-loaders are missing from /var/lib/cobbler/loaders, you may run 'cobbler get-loaders' to download them, or, if you only want to handle x86/x86_64 netbooting, you may ensure that you have installed a *recent* version of the syslinux package installed and can ignore this message entirely. Akemi, I went through the different mirrors and was unable to locate the ISO as it is stated as deprecated or unsupported, is there any plans to fix this issue in 5.6 or rather 6.x release. It appears that the latest build from Centos was built back in may, lots of bugs have emerge since them including this one relating to a kernel panic. As stated in the KB articles quoted in the bug report: https://access.redhat.com/kb/docs/DOC-31516 https://access.redhat.com/kb/docs/DOC-38013 the patch is in the kernel-2.6.18-194.3.1 and onward. CentOS/RHEL 5.5 comes with kernel-2.6.18-194 which has the bug. RHEL-6's kernel is much newer at 2.6.32-71, so it does not have this bug. Therefore to get around this issue, as suggested in one of the KB articles, you first install CentOS *5.4* and then update it to the current kernel thus skipping the problematic kernel. Tru, looks like a bug in centos, I just loaded RHEL 6 without any issues. I dont think it has something to do with the actual image file, but in any case maybe I should re-download the entire DVD again just to make sure. Tru, you nailed it right. I will load Ubuntu and Debian and will report back, this may be a bug in the loading process. I did install this system with Centos by itself and it load ok, but the virtual machine its not loading and it just keep crashing with the same error as the bug you provided/posted. Maybe someone can shine some light on this. Passing LD_LIBRARY_PATH through sudo

Stripping silent periods from MP3s

I'm on Centos 5.5, and would like to use sox to strip out any periods of silence > 5 seconds from a batch mp3 audio files. Googling I found sox, but it does not seem to support mp3 files by default. The man page says: .mp3 MP3 Compressed Audio MP3 audio files come from the MPEG standards for audio and video compression. They are a lossy compression format that achieves good compression rates with a mini- mum amount of quality loss. Also see Ogg Vorbis for a similar format. MP3 support in SoX is optional and requires access to either or both the external libmad and libmp3lame libraries. /dev/null permission changes figured out

a while back i reported an issue where /dev/null was getting set to 600 perms after a system update. i finally figured out what it is. i don't care about failed logins and have limited space on some servers, so i symlinked /var/log/btmp to /dev/null. the initscripts package does a chmod 600 /var/log/btmp, so voila /dev/null gets changed. so now i know why it happened just to me. i now need to figure out a better way to deal with btmp. any ideas from the list?

So I need some opinions on which way to go, for my home network I am running almost all linux, and I am starting to want to manage all of the users accounts, uid/gids for all of the devices some of which are laptops...so what is the best path going forward, on the server end I am running Centos5.5 and will be moving to centos 6 once it is released...the laptops and desktops run various flavors of Ubuntu/Fedora..Thanks in advanced, if there are any questions let me know....

Remote firefox configuration

Hi everyone! :-) I need to change some firefox configuration settings on a remote machine (running an up-to-date CentOS 5), using nothing but ssh for access (ie. no ssh -X or such, the link is too slow). The setting that I need to reconfigure is the one about what to open on startup --- in a GUI it is reached as Edit -> Preferences -> General tab -> "When Firefox starts". It should be changed from "show my windows and tabs from last time" to "show a blank page". Can anyone point me to a config file which should be modified? :-) The whole problem appeared when the user managed to open more-than-a-reasonable-number of tabs (around a hundred or so, I guess), so now when he starts Firefox it opens and freezes completely due to the load, lack of memory or whatever. The main window is completely unresponsive, nothing happens when he clicks on the "edit" menu to get to preferences (the menu does not open at all). Nothing even happens if he tries to close a tab, or even the whole program. The only thing that works is "killall firefox" from the terminal. So I guess the above option would reset Firefox to a sane state, but I need to reconfigure it manually (and remotely :-( ), in the config file, while firefox is not running. Hi , guys : I have a problem about the sendmail replay . The following is my condition: I have installed the sendmail server on my laptop which installed CentOS 5.5 x86 64, and I want to set up the sendmail replay. That is to say . If my linux account called test and his mail address is test(a)test.com, when he get the new mail, then the server send the mail to the company mail server , the new mail address is test(a)aa.com I am confused on it . Samba, id, uid, Active Directory and CentOS 5

I have some CentOS 5 systems that are part of an Active Directory Windows 2003 domain (using natively configured files - not likewise open). getent passwd my_account reveals uid and gid are both 10000:10000. Thus, typing: % id reveals a uid of 10000. /etc/passwd does NOT have my local account created - credentials are strictly from the Active Directory domain. The username is of the format se123456. I want my uid to be of the format 123456 (numeric part of the username. I have looked at many options for smb.conf configurations. At this point, I'm starting to believe that if getent passwd provides 10000:10000 fior uid/gid then id is providing the correct details. My SID from the domain controller is correct when queried from CentOS. usermod will not work to change the id since there is no entry in /etc/passwd. Might a shell script of some kind help convert my uid from 10000 to 123456? It should not be static calculation, since anyone logging in to that system should have their id equal the numeric portion of their username, and the numeric part may be a smaller value than 10000. The numeric part of the username matches no part of the SID from Windows. Thanks. Scott

Google Picasa / GNOME / how to launch application?

I had installed Picasa,apparently properly, but am unable to launch the application. In the GNOME Desktop menu, Applications > Graphics > Picasa > Picasa it does not launch. Reinstalled it and the same issue. Reinstalling: picasa i386 2.7.3736-15 google It is installed in /opt/picasa Box is CentOS 5.5 (32 bit) fully updated. How can I get this app to launch from the GNOME Menu, or, what file do I need to use, and where is that file, to make an Icon for Picasa on the GNOME Desktop? TIA! The centos has support for this controller by default, I just had to do some tweaking in the actual controller in order to see the virtual console. I think it was my mistake all along to get this thing going, my box is flying using Vmware ESX 4.1, the nxt step is to configure centos, redhat, windows 2008 R2, debian, ubuntu and all the other goodies I am testing, opps almost forgot Solaris 11 express and Opensolaris. RAID help

Hi All, I have a new system with 2 Seagate 1TB SATA Enterprise level drives in it. I want to RAID1 (mirror) these drives. This machine will be a web-server in my apartment hosting an HTML video fan site I am creating. Apache, MySQL, PHP etc. This site will easily be 300+ gigs with all the versions of each video, the MySQL won't be huge, but will grow as data for each video is added (i.e location on the server, keyframe name, etc) I am a bit confused by: http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Deployment_Guide-en-US/s1-raid-config.html So if I simplify, I must: 1. Create a software raid partition on each drive 2. Create a RAID 1 out of that partition and use a mount point of /boot 3. Create other mount points I might want i.e swap, /home, etc 4. Create RAID1 out of these partitions 5. rinse and repeat this for each mount point I want A few questions: 1. This system support 16gb of RAM. I have 9gb in it, but I will max it out over the next few months as I find great deals on RAM, what should my SWAP space be? I recall a long while ago that SWAP should match physical RAM. 2. Any reason I can't just create a single mount point taking up the entire drive and RAID1 the entire thing? Can anyone recommend some ideal mount points and sizes? 3. What should I account for if my /var/www/html will be very large? Best, -Jason

Replacing disk in RAID array with bigger disk?

I have to replace a disk in a RAID-1 array (LSI 1068 controller in an HP DL320 G3) and I assume it shouldn't be a problem if I use a bigger one? (going from 500 MB to 1 GB) The controller should just be able to build the same 500 MB disk as it did before, right? Now, if in a next step I replace the other, still smaller disk with a 1 GB disk, too, will the controller be able to build a 1 GB disk from that? If so, will the existing LVM setup be able to utilize that extra space or will it be stuck at the original 500 MB? I've never done this before, so I have no idea if this should work or not. Thanks. what is device dm-2?

According to some searches and the LVM documentation on centos.org a "dmsetup ls" should give me more info. But it doesn't list devices with dm- numbers. Only like so: lv-name (major, minor) The minor numbers seem to be the same numbers that I can see as dm- numbers in an iostat. Is this by chance the dm- number, so that minor 2 would be dm-2? BIND and latest update (max open files WARNING)

Hi all, After the latest security update for bind (which came out last night), now there's a new message on syslog, (facility: daemon, severity: warning) every time you restart named: max open files (1024) is smaller than max sockets (4096) After googling for a while the solution seems to be to add this to /etc/security/limits.conf: named soft nofile 4096 ...and mofity /etc/named.conf in order to add, under the options section: files 4096; That seems to work. Of course, you may raise the 4096 but I guess that's the default in BIND and I was good with that. I'm not sure why this happend. Maybe before the update bind had a value of 1024 for max.sockets and now it was raised to 4096. -- Jorge

So, it *seems* to be working, pretty much. I needed to install opensc, openct pcsc-lite, pcsc-lite-openct, and ctapi-common will be installed as a dependency. I *removed* coolkey and esc, which depended on it. 100% of the time, they misidentifed the new/current US federal ID PIV-II cards as coolkey cards, and popped up this "phone home" window, then a "manage smartcards" window. Without them, I also don't see an icon in the taskbar... but using ssh-add (actually, my manager built openssh, opensc and openct from current source, 5.4? 5.5?, and renamed stuff to piv-....), so I do piv-ssh-add -s opensc-pkcs11.so, and it adds the card. Before you do that... configure /etc/pam_pkcs11/pam_pkcs11.conf so that # Filename of the PKCS #11 module. The default value is "default" use_pkcs11_module = opensc; and you may have to decide on a mapper. Then restart pcscd, and you should be good to go. At any rate, no wrong/confusing windows, and logins work. I do note that if I try to use my regular password, I need to pull my card out of the reader. On a related note, from WinDoze, there's a version of putty that works <http://www.risacher.org/putty-cac/putty-cac-experimental/windows/?C=N;O=D>. Once installed, when you bring up the putty window, click on expand ssh, then click on pkcs. The one thing needed is the right dll, which, if you're running a 64 bit system, and using, say, ActivIdentity, c:\Program Files (x86)\ActivIdentity\ActivClient\acpkcs211.dll MAKE SURE you get the right .dll; if you're running 32 bit, it will be the other one. mark

Rsyslog weirdness

I just noticed that on one CentOS 5 server the logs messages, maillog and a couple of others have been blank for a couple of weeks! I tracked down the error to /etc/sysconfig/rsyslogd There was a line SYSLOGD_OPTIONS="-c3" I googled that -c3 defines the "version" or "compatibility mode", and with 3 it means "rsyslog v3 native interface". When I removed the option and restarted rsyslogd, the logging began to work again. I wonder why is this. how to install CentOS onto a USB flash drive from Windows?

Hi all, Can anyone please point me to a link with instructions on how to install CentOS 5 onto a USB flash drive, preferably from Windows? I would like to create a full running CentOS installation (with minimal packages obviously) that runs off a USB flash drive, and I don't have a Linux machine to use for this installation right now. Installing Centos 5.5 64 bit issues

Dear All, We have a new SUN BLADE X6270 SERVER MODULES and i am trying to install centos 5.5 64 bit . the installations starts fine but when it reaches the point inialthe X server it says initialization done but then gives a fatal error and stops Appreciate if some one could help me and advice regards simon

Issues with CentOS in enterprise

Hello all. Does anybody have experience with pushing CentOS in enterprise? I have the following situation. I tried to promote CentOS to local bank. They have now a couple of Gentoo-based systems and I tried to explain them that CentOS is much better option for enterprises. IT department is interested in stability of the system, so they are ready to give CentOS a try. But the problem came from management and information security division. That guys look much affected by FUD created by M$. They tell the story like "you can not rely on this open source, it is built by just few community geeks, you never know what will happen if the developer will be hit by bus tomorrow" and so on. They especially refer to the last year FUD story published at ZDNet (http://goo.gl/y0LBi) So, IT guys are allowed to use open source only if they can prove that it has stable community and transparent development and build process they can reproduce on their own if necessary. I guess, I'm not the first who encounter this issue. Could you share your experience how to deal with it? Are there any public resources that can be used as proofs of CentOS stability? -- Zdenek

Timo, Its interesting, I am presently attending a conference in NYC and in one of the tables I saw the redhat vendor. My first question to them was " What do you think about centos", they reply "You are using a distribution without support and that is prompt to failure..." I don't think this is an accurate statement is it? Anyway to make the story short, they keep telling how bad centos is for our datacenter and that I should consider adopting redhat which is more "robust", offers "virtualization" and nearly real-time support for its customers. I didn't go the extra mile to ask for pricing but would appreciate your input about what they said about centos. Yes, the entire install will be done from a box using this controller and 10 SATA HDDs. Probably will load a mirror from two disks partitions to have some fault tolerance them do the rest of my partitions using LVM. Just having a difficult time loading the LSi driver from the loading process. I wish this can be done from a USB stick since the machine does not have a floppy. >>> "Joseph L.
