XEN images and XFS don't seem to get along

Hello listmates, It appears that on the second machine in a row (CentOS 5.5, 32 bit) if I am trying to place a VM into a file located in XFS the machine just hangs (the host machine, not the VM). If I place the VM in a raw device or in a file in ext3 all seems to work perfectly. Is that just a coincidence or is there a reason for this madness? Thanks. Boris.

LDAP authentication on a remote server (via ldaps://)

Hello, I have a central repository of users/groups based on OpenLDAP which is working on a remote LAN (servers share users credentials and mount their home directories via NFS). They use non-encrypted ldap restricted to the local network. Now, I have a few servers in our local office and I would like them to authenticate from the remote LDAP server using encryption via ldaps://. (at this stage, without using client-side certificate) I have run a similar command as I did on the remote servers, replacing ldap://localldapserver by ldaps://ldap.mycompany.com: authconfig --enableldap --enableldapauth --enablecache --enablemkhomedir --ldapserver=ldaps://ldap.mycompany.com --enableldaptls --ldapbasedn=dc=mycompany,dc=com --passalgo=sha256 --updateall and I put the CA certificate at the right place. (either explicitly pointing to it TLS_CACERT or downloading it to /etc/openldap/cacerts vi system-configuration-authentication) In all my various tests, ldapsearch -x returns the content of the remote LDAP, so I guess that at least openldap clients are properly configured. But when I try: getent passwd the command hangs. Same when I try to: su - myuser (I also tried configuring with the system-configuration-authentication UI from a box with GNOME, and also tried authconfig without --enableldaptls) So is there anything specific to authentication ldaps: that I should have done? (as I said, this approach systematically works with plain ldap on this same LDAP server) Thanks in advance for your help! Mathieu Note: all systems involved are running up to date CentOS 5.5

This error sounds familiar. If it is the same problem I've had a couple of times, every time it happens, I forget what it was I did the last time to fix it. :-( After I remember, it seems almost obvious. Assuming you've got the same problem, you need to log into the account remotely, with out a GUI interface, or as another user. See if you have a file ~/.ICEauthority. If it is there, delete it and then try logging in again. I think that is the right file for the problem I've had. I just noticed I had a CentOS 5.3 system that I updated to CentOS 5.5 a few days ago, and I just ran "yum -y update" again to get the latest kernel, and I just noticed it still has the old 2.6.18-128 kernel instead of the new 2.6.18-194.17. What gives? /etc/grub.conf points at 2.6.18-194.17, but when I reboot, 2.6.18-128 comes up. Any suggestions? Hello List, I found these wonderful instruction by Alan Bartlett (thanks Alan) for building a kernel.org kernel that would install on CentOS 5.5. Doing this and moving the resulting .rpm to the target system and doing a rpm -ivh ... works great. Now I am trying to use the same rpm as part of a CentOS respin and the installation fails miserably leaving me with a unbootable system. Using the rescue option I see the following in my install log. EXT4 mount issue

Hi All, When a couple of EXT4 filesystems are mounted in a server I get the message Oct 1 18:49:42 sraid3 kernel: EXT4-fs (sdb): mounted filesystem without journal Oct 1 18:49:42 sraid3 kernel: EXT4-fs (sdc): mounted filesystem without journal in the system logs. My confusion is why are they mounted without a journal? They were both created with mkfs -t ext4 /dev/sdb mkfs -t ext4 /dev/sdc and mounted in "/etc/fstab" with /dev/sdb /sraid3 ext4 defaults 1 2 /dev/sdc /sraid4 ext4 defaults 1 2 both are 11T and so I would prefer as much stability as possible, io performance is not an issue on either device just integrity so I thought the journal would be default and necessary. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. OpenOffice or LibreOffice?

Given that the Document Foundation has now split away from Oracle to continue the development of an independent office suite, do we have any idea which was CentOS and Red Hat are planning to go in this area - OpenOffice or LibreOffice? I know that LibreOffice is not production ready yet - they only have their first beta available, but it's just a matter of (likely a short) time before the split becomes a release. Thanks, Mark

I am the system administrator. I have a system that was built with a default install which resulted in everything in a single file system except for /boot wrote some scripts to split out: /home, /usr, /var, /opt, and /tmp to separate file systems/logical volumes it looks like it ought to work, There's plenty of space in all the filesystems and I can log via ssh and have write access in my home directory. Logging in via ssh did result in a new .Xauthority file being automatically created, but that did not help. Googleing around I saw a thread where the user was actually out of disk space, but before that was established somebody asked if /home was on a different filesystem from /, but what to do in that case never came up. Another google thread suggested looking in .xsession-errors, but I don't have one. I've found irrelevant ubuntu suggestions regarding ubuntu only packages. Hi Brent, Thanks for the reply. I have to make a decision yes, it is not an easy one either, I read have so many different reports, opinions that I now feel my brain has become rather scrambled.. Wondering now if I should just have smaller filesystems and stick with EXT3.. I have never used XFS and have therefore no experience with it and this I guess leaves me short of confidence. Crontab problem

Hi, I seem to have a problem with crontab. I am running CentOS 5.5. If I add my bakup scripts into crontab they take very long to run. If I run my scripts manually they run 100%. I have also tried vixiecron, same issue. Any ideas? Thanks Jenny

Python resource module returns just zeros

I'm using a call to the resource module's getrusage method. On openSUSE this works, on CentOS [python26-2.6.5-3.el5] it 'works' but just returns zeros for the memory utilization values. resource.getrusage(resource.RUSAGE_SELF).ru_maxrss openSUSE: returns 5512 CentOS: returns 0 Anyone know what condition causes this? Format details for a raid partition....

So I have been playing with a RAID 10 f2 ( 2 disks far layout) setup...thanks for all of the advice..Now I am playing with the format and want to make sure I have it setup the best that I can, my raid was built using the raid 10 option with 2 disks with the layout=far, chunk size 512....now I read all of the docs I could find about format and stride and stripe size and this is what i came up with... mkfs -t ext4 -E stride=128,stripe-width=32 /dev/md0 Someone let meknow if this looks right, but since i only have two disks to get my stride 512/4k=128 and then to get my stripe 2/2*128/4=32 Does that look right and if not let me know but more important how to obtain the right number so I can do it correctly in the future...Thanks.

sata AHCI controllers (real and virtual)

I saw something somewhere about AHCI support requiring kernel 2.6.19 or later. But the current CentOS/RHEL stable kernels are 2.6.18 I'm trying to run CentOS/RHEL in a VirtualBox vm, which by default creates sata virtual disks with an AHCI virtual controller. These virtual machines are quite unstable, and I'm wondering if the AHCI virtual controller is the problem. I do have a real physical AHCI controller and I'm wondering if I should try it on a CentOS/RHEL 5.5 box, or if I should wait for RHEL/CentOS 6, before even attempting it. -- Drew Einhorn "You can see a lot by just looking." -- Yogi Berra

best filesystem for a webserver

Dear all, i'm setting up a new machine to handle a webserver with mysql web directory contains alot of small files and database is around 15 GB i've did a bit research, read alot of articles.. mainly i came up with the understanding that: EXT3 is the set it and forget it kind of filesystem. and reiserFS is the best choice for small files though there's a bigger risk of data loss upon power failure (better solved in ext3) any advice on this matter? or any other filesystem you advise me to use on a production system? thanks

I am attempting to learn how to build my own rpms. I found a good tutorial online but it is a bit out of date (2007). Can't login after installing Centos 5.5

I've done a clean install of Centos 5.5, largely using the default options. Those I changed were: * Changed to KDE Desktop * Added Samba and NFS4 to firewall * Changed NTP servers to those of my ISP When Centos boots what I think is a progress bar shows no progress but eventually (probably about the right amount of time for booting the OS) the user login screen partially appears (username and box, time and name of machine, a flowing "tree" symbol), but the bottom of the screen does not appear to be completed. This login screen clears and redisplays several times. Finally the screen locks with the time displayed in much exaggerated height (about a quarter of the screen height) and nothing more works. At no point can I get to a text login screen (Ctrl-Alt-F1) so I can't even debug it! Can anyone suggest what is wrong or how to overcome it?

The *Combating Online Infringements and Counterfeits Act*(COICA) will blacklist sites that are “dedicated to infringing activities” regardless of where the site is hosted, with exceptions for commercially-oriented sites but not political speech. Originally planned as two blacklists, one controlled by the courts and one by the US Attorney General, the latter was dropped from the bill yesterday after ISPs raised early complaints. Running CentOS release 5.5. I'm trying to update or patch an SRPMS file, specifically openssl-0.9.8e-12.el5_4.6.src.rpm. Basically, I'm trying to change one line in the source, in ssl/ssl.h. I create a "diff –u" file called openssl-ssl-h.patch. error when logging into system

Hello everyone, I have a CentOS 5 system. On this system, I used the usermod -n and groupmod -g to change the user id and the group id for a standard, regular user from 500 to 1000. I then ran the following commands (as root), to make sure all the files were changed to match: find / -uid 500 -exec chown 1000 {} \; -- and -- find / -gid 500 -exec chgrp 1000 {} \; Now, whenever I try to login as that regular user, I get the following error: id: can't find name for groupd ID 500 I have checked /etc/passwd and /etc/group and both files are correctly showing 1000 as the user and group ids. I didn't see the id isn't listed in either of the shadow files. All of the files in the user's home directory have the ownership and group set to id 1000. I have rebooted the system to make sure nothing was being stored in memory, with the same results. MegaRAID Storage Manager on CentOS 5.5?

Does anyone have the 'MegaRAID Storage Manager' GUI working on CentOS 5.5? I can run it, but it won't let me log in. The docs state that it requires the local root username and password - but it always rejects this with "Message = Login failed: Invalid username or password!" Thanks James Pearson

I am wanting to use the mkfs.hfsplus as mentioned here http://www.oli.id.au/createosxdmgdiskimagesinlinux but I dont have the command. yum provides "*/mkfs.hfsplus" returns no packages found. Where do I find this command? Thanks. Jerry

Mailman works well for our mailing lists, but the archive is unacceptable - the worst thing is lack of search function. I got one tip for this: 1) emails converted to html format with mhonarc 2) search can be done with htdig Opinions? I have copied it to a new drive before using 'dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=16384' in middle of night offline. I did that in past because 'smartctl -a /dev/sda' did not work on the old drive. Is there a way to copy it to a hardware RAID 1 array of two drives in a similiar way? If so what not too expensive 2 port hardware raid controller do you reccommend and how do you do it? Thanks. Acronis True Image or Clonezilla

I want to clone a small (80GB) disk on my CentOS server to a large (1.5TB) disk, as smart has been giving me warnings of unreadable sectors. Both disks are Western Digital, and WD has a WD version of Acronis True Image. I'm not sure whether to use this or Clonezilla. My worry with Acronis is that I want to keep the original disk, and I'm not sure from the documentation if True Image allows this. Hello all, I have just configured a 64-bit CentOS 5.5 machine to support an XFS filesystem as specified in the subject line. The filesystem will be used to store an extremely large number of files (in the tens of millions). Due to its extremely large size, would there be any non-standard XFS build/configuration options I should consider? Thanks. Boris.

[Slightly OT] "Open Source Development + Tools" - Book/Resource?

Greetings all- My apologies for the slightly OT post. My primary production platform *IS* CentOS 5.x with a minor scattering of 4.x machines behind firewalls here and there... I find that I'm being placed more and more into a 'quasi-developer' role which strays some from my normal system/network admin duties. Specifically, having to work with the deep internals of make, autoconf, libtool, cross platform compilation, non-standard libs, etc. My head spins some days trying to work through some of these types of issues. I'm hoping someone knows of a good resource or book that explains the general 'open source' or '*NIX' method of application development, compilation, and dependency/library handling. Specifically, how to take source, and turn it into a "./configure, make, make install" type release and everything that is involved in doing so. I certainly have experience compiling, installing, using software in this manner, but I would like (need?) to learn more about how it all works. Google has been helpful if I'm looking for direct documentation of each of the standard tools (gcc, make, autoconf, libtool, etc), but I've been unable to find something that details the components together, and explains their relationship. Again, my apologies for the OT post. I hope some bright minds on the list can shed a few thoughts. --Tim

Forbidden: can't access *.html files in /var/www/html

Hello, I'm using the latest CentOS with phpBB 3.0.x + postgreSQL + sendmail (relayed through gmail.com) - all those programs working fine, with no big modifications of the CentOS defaults (i.e. SELinux is on). Now I'm struggling with the seemingly simple problem, that when I put an .html file into /var/www/html/ then Apache won't serve it. In the browser I see: "Forbidden You don't have permission to access /Alex.html on this server. Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS) Server at XXXX Port 80" In the /var/log/httpd/error_log (I've set "LogLevel debug") I only see: "[error] [client 10.216.40.68] (13)Permission denied: access to /Alex.html denied [error] [client 10.216.40.68] (13)Permission denied: access to /Alex.html denied" The other filetypes like crossdomain.xml and index.php or hello-world.php are served just fine. Also, if I move my *.html files under /var/www/html/test/ - then they are served ok. I was thinking of copying the old root partition with sudo cp -a -P /* /mnt/hd (after mounting the prospective new root partition). Then I'd have to modify the new /etc/fstab . netstat - kill by pid ?

I am writing a small script to kill process(es) listening on particular port number. Here I am particularly looking at Java servlet-containers like Tomcat and JBoss, which sometimes don't complete their shutdown process and it still shows up as running process with ps or netstat. This needs to be kill-ed and for that knowing pid of that process is necessary. The netstat by default doesn't give only pid(s), so one has to use sed/awk/tr like utility to extract pid info. Does anyone know any program/utility which gives pid(s) based on listening port numbers? Or is there any option in netstat that I am missing? Thanks, CS.
