Interpreting logwatch

Every few days I see in the logwatch on my Centos-5.5 web-server what seems like a rather feeble break-in attempt. Eg today I see --------------------------- 403 Forbidden /phpMyAdmin/scripts/setup.php: 2 Time(s) /phpmyadmin/scripts/setup.php: 2 Time(s) 404 Not Found /PMA2005/scripts/setup.php: 1 Time(s) /TRAD_files/datestamp.js: 1 Time(s) ... --------------------------- followed by dozens of similar lines. As far as I can see, the IP of the person making the attempt (if there was an attempt) is not given. I'm not at all sure what if anything I should do about this. In fact, I'm not clear how one should deal with logwatch entries in general. Shutdown CentOS VM when closing VMWare Workstation

Hello, I'm using CentOS 5.5 / 16bit as a virtual machine in VMWare Workstation and have installed the "VMWare Tools" by running vmware-install.pl and vmware-config-tools.pl but can't figure out how to make the VM shutdown, when I shutdown the Windows PC hosting it. Does anybody please have any hints or scripts? Do I need to use any VMWare modules if I just want to shutdown the VM? They just get 404s in return... You can check the IPs in apache error_log In the beginning I was reporting them to their ISPs but, with the high numbers of daily scans, I just gave up... Either they are part of a botnet (so clueless users infected pcs), or they are abroad (Asia) and the ISP will just mostly ignore your email... Maybe just make sure your set apache ServerSignature to Off... One annoying "bug" about logwatch is that it does not cope with the lack of year in yum.log dates, so it will happily report packages installs from last years as if it just happened... JD

GPL question

Hi All; I have a GPL question - sorry if it's way off topic. We're pushing on a system that collects a variety of data points and pulls them into a single report. One of the modules we use is a 3rd party tool that generates an html report which equates to one of the pages on the report that's then delivered to the customer. In this scenario is the code that generates all the other modules/pages of the report subject to the GPL as well? Thanks in advance

metafont on CentOS 5?

Can someone hit me with the appropriate clue-by-4? is there an available package for CentOS5 which provides the metafont command, or a replacement? What is the name and which repo? please. I have a font bundle I need to use (which is not provided in an RPM that I can find), but metafont does not seem to be available. tetex provides the /usr/share/texmf/metafont directory structure, but not a */bin/metafont... Anyone Having Any Luck Downloaing the DVD ISO?

I've been trying for 2 weeks to download the dvd iso torrent... Shows a ton of seeders, few leechers, but very poor performance.. (I'm correctly setup for torrents and get fast downloads normally) Only like 4% downloaded and crawling. I've tried the trackers from every one of the mirror sites. I can't use the net install because the systems I am installing are on a closed network. Anyone have any ideas where else to get this or any suggestions? Thx, R

Wrapper package / yum repository

Hi, I am setting up a yum repository for our applications and I am having a bit of trouble. I copy the files to a webserver, run createrepo and then configure the servers to use it. One of the RPMs is a "release" package that includes exact versions of all the binary and configuration files as dependencies so we can do "packaged releases" and, if we want to revert to a previous version, we can force it by installing this package (and the yum-downgrade plugin). The issue I am having is that RPM/yum seems to be unable to correctly resolve the dependencies: If I do "yum install adm-release" I get errors about lots of missing dependencies. memcached - epel vs. rpmforge?

Does anyone know how the epel and rpmforge packages for memcached differ? I installed the rpmforge version some time ago before epel had it and now it looks like there are some conflicts in dependencies. Update to base release

Hello All, We have some machines running CentOS 4 Update 4 (4.4). We want to update these boxes to the stock CentOS 4 Update 8 (4.8). We have the 4.8 iso images. Is it possible to use up2date and have it use the 4.8 mounted iso images on a remote (install) server as the repository? The ISO's are accessible through http. These servers are remote with no CD/DVD option to upgrade that way. I have tried to Google this but can't seem to quite hit what I need. I found one that shows up2date-config GUI setup but I do not have X running on this server and do not want to screw up the config with the CLI version of it. We need to go to stock versions to match our production RHEL 4.8 machines. Thanks, John -- John Kennedy

NFS v4 on Centos and "Cannot allocate memory"

Hi all, I have a Centos server exporting a filesystem via NFSv4 and from my Ubuntu desktop I can mount it specifying the nfs version as 4 fine and read/write data. >From another Centos system trying to mount this exported filesystem results in "mount.nfs4: Cannot allocate memory" every time. Been banging my head against the wall for a while now... Anyone have any ideas? James

Suggestion on Share folder

Hi all, I need some advise on how best manage a share folder. We have a 2TB samba share. Inside there is individual user sub-folder, and also there are team's folders. We use one shared account for all users. The problem is: The user abuse the space usage. My thought: - Implement quota for each user. - But the implication is each user must have their own account and this potentially gives additional hassle when someone forgets the password. Anyone has similar experience? Much appreciated for the thoughts. Thank you.

screen saver crash

My screen saver crash both in gnome and kde X windows when open the screen saver. I guess that some package needed is not installed. I reinstall the gnome-screen but it still crashs. How can I check which package is not installed?

trouble mounting NFS share in net install

I am trying to install the net install version of 5.5 from an NFS share that I setup with freenas. I have fully functioning DNS (hosted on freebsd) and can mount the iso share on another centos box with the command mount nas.mydomain.com:/mnt/iso1 /mnt/iso1 on that machine. The nas host in question is a freenas which I believe is NFS 4. I can / will verify if someone would care to respond to this thread. but when I go to do the same thing in the centos net install I get an error stating simply: "that directory cannot be mounted from the server". in the settings I have the following values: NFS server name: nas.example.com CentOS directory: /mnt/iso1 NFS mount options (optional): I have also tried it by ip just to be sure: NFS server name: 192.168.1.250 CentOS directory: /mnt/iso1 NFS mount options (optional): Does anyone have any suggestions that can help me get going? ip aliasing on bonded interface possible?

How to Retain Ownership on webdir

Hi, I have this webroot /webdir/ with 2775 permission so that any created file/directory by apache inside of /webdir/ will be 'users:webusers'. However, I noticed when the apache created a new files (fileB) / directories (dirB), the ownership becomes 'apache:apache' and the sgid has gone for /webdir/ (drwxrwxr-x). I'm currently using Wordpress. [before] drwxrwsr-x users webusers /webdir/ drwxrwsr-x users webusers /webdir/dirA -rw-rw-r-- users webusers /webdir/fileA [after] drwxrwxr-x users webusers /webdir/ drwxrwxr-x apache apache /webdir/dirB -rw-rw-r-- apache apache /webdir/fileB Why the sgid bit doesn't reflected and the group as well? we have CENTOS 5 on DELL servers. some servers have longer than one year did not reboot. Our consultant suggest we need at least reboot once every year to clean out memory junk. What is your opinion?

Alternatives to checkinstall?

I am reviewing some work that I did in June and forgot to take notes at the time. For some reason I have a nagging suspicion that for this job I used a package builder other than checkinstall but for the life of me I cannot recall the name. Now, the case may be that I actually did use checkinstall in which case not remembering the name of non-extant software is expected. On the other hand I would like to remove any doubts on the matter. If any of you have suggestions for viable alternatives to checkinstall for installing source packages on CentOS-5 as rpms then I would be much obliged. Hi, I'm totally new with centos...we have a cluster in our labo with centos oscar. The gcc which was provided with the release is gcc41 and gfortran41. There are packages for gcc44 and gfortran44. I have installed them. But the gcc is not a link to gcc41 or gcc44. it is just an executable. idem for gfortran. So which is the good way on centOS to choose the gcc44 and gfortran44 per default. CentOS or other Linux Internet Router/Gateway

Hi Everyone, I've got kids who are growing older and I want to build a Linux box to filter Internet access. I've got six computers on the Internet, plus the laptops -- most run Windows. I'm not sure if it's called a router or gateway or...? I don't mind doing the leg work, I just don't know where to start. I'm pretty sure I'm *not* looking for a web server (though it might be fun to have a local web) -- I might also use the computer for a file server, but I mostly want a... proxy server? Not sure what tool I need to use. I seem to remember there were specialty Linux distributions for this purpose. Once I do figure out what kind of box I'm building, would I still be able to put my Linksys router behind it, or would the Linux box *be* the router? -- and would I have to get a wireless switch instead? Would a Pentium III handle this duty, or would it gum up the works and make the Internet too slow? Sorry for stupid questions. At some point I'm going to have to learn about Linux servers. Questions: 1) Are the newer perl packages from rpmforge compatible with the installed base perl packages? 2) What other implications should I be looking for if I try this (other than the obvious caveat about other rpmforge rpms breaking other base rpms)? I have changed /etc/sysconfig/nfs to specify port numbers for NFS daemons. Somehow statd is still starting up at random port number. Other damons are starting at properly at specified port numbers Any clues on what might be wrong? Any other location/setting that takes precedence over sysconfig/nfs ? PAM_shield locking me out?

Yesterday I installed pam_shield and followed the testing suggested and thought all was well. today I find that I cannot get to my email account, I can login via ssh okay (uses keys) but su and sudo give segmentation faults. I am guessing due to the pam module causing a problem. As I cannot do remote login as root and sudo and su use pam I appear to have locked myself out. Any words of wisdom from those a little more knowledgeable? Why do I keep trying new things - I like to improve my system and harden it against constant script kiddies (many different triers per day), but despite reading all the instructions I fall into a hole I cannot climb out of. Hopefully someone has an idea BTW - the console also fails to allow login TIA Rob

Automatically detecting LUNs without a reboot

Hi everybody. I have an HP StorageWorks array connected to one of my servers, connected via an LSI controller (lspci reports: SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1068E PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS (rev 08)) on an HP DL385 running CentOS 5.5 x86_64. I have set up multipath and all is working but, when I create a snaphost and export it as a new LUN from the HP web interface, it does not appear as a new disk. If I reboot, I get the LUN to appear as a new SCSI device (sd[a-z]). Is there any way I can force automatic detection? One of the reasons to use snapshots is to be able to back up the system without downtime, so not being able to detect the LUNs makes the whole set up a bit pointless. I have tried kudzu, the rescan-scsi-bus.sh script and everything else I have found online, with no luck. The LSI tools only seem to be available for i386, and I would like to avoid adding the 32bit environment, if I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gabriel Tabares

iptables for PostgreSQL not working

Hi, I am having problem in configuring iptables for PostgreSQL server. I added following rule to iptables to allow connections to default PostgreSQL port (5432): {{{ sudo /sbin/iptables -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp -s 10.0.0.0/24 --dport 5432 -j ACCEPT }}} After this I can't connect using telnet or psql (postgres client). Following error is received from telnet on MacOS and CentOS: {{{ MacOS$ telnet 10.0.0.12 5432 Trying 10.0.0.12… telnet: connect to address 10.0.0.12: Connection refused telnet: Unable to connect to remote host }}} {{{ CentOS$ telnet 10.0.0.12 5432 Trying 10.0.0.12... telnet: connect to address 10.0.0.12: No route to host }}} I tried removing source address constraint and to allow connections from all hosts, however that didn't make any difference. * The connection works fine when I stop iptables firewall. I am sure there is no rule before this 5432 rule which is refusing connections. The PostgreSQL server is running and accepting localhost connections. Also, hosts.allow and hosts.deny file are not refusing connections. Any help on what might be wrong? -- Thanks, CS

Centos 5.5, not booting latest kernel but older one instead

I've been going along not noticing things happening right under my nose. so imagine my surprise when I discovered last night that my Centos 5 box has installed multiple new kernels over the last few months, as updates come out, and IT IS NOT BOOTING THE NEWST ONE. grub.conf says to boot kernel 0, and 0 is the newest one. but the one it actually boots is 6 or 8 down the list (clearly I've not been keeping things cleaned up, either). Below is some info that shows the problem. Can anyone here provide helpful suggestions on (1) why it is doing this, and more importantly (2) how I can make it stop? korganizer missing alarms

Korganizer has been working fine for years for me. But just recently it's started missing alarms... I mean I set an alarm for an event but the window for it is never popped. I googled around and found that other were having this problem back in 2007 and 2005, but there's no mention of it in recent months. e2fsck with millions of files

Greetings. I am planning on getting my RHCE in the near future. I thinking I should wait until 6 comes out before proceeding. That being said, I don't want to wait past the end of this year. That being said, do you all have any information about how long it takes for their training platform to catch up to their release? Which is to say, if RHES 6 is released on day 1, at what point will they start training on RHES6? I'm asking here instead of RH since I want real-world answers, not the company line. OpenVPN throughput

Hello listmates, We are working on setting up two private networks linked by a public network which is fast (1 Gbit/s) but potentially insecure. Since the hosts on our two networks need to talk to each other, and do so securely, we have decided to use OpenVPN to connect them, making one gateway a server and the other a client. The connectivity part was easy to establish and worked like a charm. The only problem was, and is, performance. We have two old PIII-class machines that are being tested for the role of the gateways. We have put new 1 Gbit NIC's in them and they work find for everything (data transmission, DHCP, DNS, routing) except the VPN. When traffic goes through the VPN the OpenVPN process goes to 99% CPU on the server, about 70% CPU on the client and the effective transmission rate goes down to about 6 MB/s whereas in non-VPN mode it can be as high as 50+ MB/s (the top for the 1 Gbit/s is, obviously, 125 MB/s hence with the VPN we are down to about 5% of the capacity). While this may be usable we would like to hope we can do better. Hence the following questions: 1) Have you used OpenVPN in a similar setup? 2) If so what sort of performance did you see? 3) What kind of equipment did you use? Personally, I'd like to hope that if we find VPN-enabled gateways with more processing power we'd get drastically better performance. So if you have data to confirm or deny that please share it. pam changes - service restart reqd?
