kvm boot options

I am trying to use -boot order=dc,once=d for kvm. It did not seem to work as it booted from CDROM (d) the second time around and was wanting to re-install centos again. 1st boot installs centos and auto reboots 2nd boot then begins OTHER things to do. Did I not have the command options correct above? Jerry

Freezing gnome terminals...

Hi, just wondering if you also experience gnome terminals freezing after a while...? It mainly happens over the week-end. I would leave a terminal open (with an ssh session to a remote site), come back on monday and type a few commands and it jwould just freeze. But it also happen from time to time randomly during the day (but still with days old terminals). Happens to my collegues too. The Gnome terminal Reset option would not do anything. any idea what could be the problem? Thx, JD

That is to say , If I use the firefox or IE browser to access this example website : http://test.com.cn; then I can see the all users' vnc state and I can stop or restart them . Ignorant question on pam_shield

I've seen pam_shield recommended several times for protecting against malicious login attempts; but I'm not quite clear if this requires one to be already running some pam-based software? Slow domain resolution problem

Hi everyone, I've just joine the list as I am having an issue with our CentOS servers. The domain resolution is extremely slow from the application but doing an nslookup gives an immediate response. All the applications have the same issue, as do all the servers. I have been looking for the solution all over the web and all I have found are references to disabling ipv6. - By setting enable_ipv6 = no in /etc/sysconfig/network, which is already done on all the machines. - By blacklisting the ip6 module, which is not an option as it is used by the bonding module. Just for the sake of it, I tried it and, as expected, the bonding module did not come back up. If bad comes to worse, I could set up host entries for the main machines in /etc/hosts, but I really am trying to avoid that. Any suggestions? Thanks Gabriel Tabares

Hello All, I have been tasked with getting some configuration management system running at work. We have about 20 web servers running (some virtual and some physical), and we are trying to come up with a tool that will assist setting up new boxes as we bring them online, as well as maintaining existing systems when changes are necessary. After spending a little bit of time searching around today, I have run across 2 that seem like good options, cfengine and puppet. Does anyone have any thoughts about either of these tools? Is there definite advantage to using one over the other from your experience? [OT] Label Printer Recommendations

Greetings Folks, I am after any recommendations or experiences using Label printers to print barcodes with CentOS, we currently using Star TSP700's but they're not clear enough for the scanners we have. There seems to be plenty of choice but not much Linux support going on, 'Never had anyone ask for Linux drivers before..' seems to be the most common answer when trying to buy. I have also tried a Brother P-Touch QL-550 but can't seem to get that to print at all using the Foomatic drivers available online. TIA Colin.

Hi All, I have had a thread about this going on the phpMyAdmin list for a little while. Nobody there has been able to shed any light on my problem. It seems that with phpMyAdmin I can not connect to remote servers. Though it also seems that apache, php and mysqli all work fine outside of phpMyAdmin. Below I have detailed my trouble shooting. This only seems to be an issue for me with CentOS 5 so I'm hoping someone out there has run into this before. I'm certain there is some setting or dependency I am missing so if you have any insight into this I'd greatly appreciate it. We have CentOS 5.5 production systems with a major Cloud VM vendor and I have replicated the results with CentOS 5.5 on local VM's (ISO install) with my own VM platform. The remote database server is listening on eth1. eth0 is our public routable IP and eth1 is our 10.x.x.x private subnet. We do not expose the mysql servers on the public interfaces. All of our web applications access the database servers by IP on the 10.x.x.x subnet on eth1. The apache server where phpmyadmin is installed also has other virtual hosts that have wordpress instances among other things, that use the mysqli interface to connect to the same remote database server and they all work fine. The apache server also has a local mysql server that I can successfully connect phpmyadmin to using localhost or 127.0.0.1 for the db host name with cookie authentication. The apache server where phpmyadmin is installed I can use the bash mysql client and connect to the remote database server with my credentials. I have tested CentOS 5.5 with RPM installed httpd and RPM installed PHP 5.1 and PMA 2.x, and CentOS 5.5 RPM installed Apache, my compiled PHP 5.2.3 and PMA 3.x. Both with the same result. Logins to any remote server over TCP with cookie auth fail with a "#1045 Cannot log in to the MySQL server" and tcpdump shows no packets on the interface to the DB server. Connections to the local database server via PMA 3.x, my compiled php 5.2 over tcp using localhost, port 3306, cookie auth connects right away. Connections to the local database server via PMA "mysqli://localhost:3306" shows no traffic in tcpdump on lo, eth0 or eth1 so I'm assuming it uses the local socket for this. I have tested Ubuntu 10 with Apt installed php, apache, mysqladmin and it all works out of the box. I would love to just throw ubuntu up there but work won't allow a mixed linux environment. It HAS to be CentOS. Just to make sure I am not crazy I made the test file below and connected to my remote database from the same virtualhost as phpmyadmin using the same username and password (not root). It works perfectly and I get the results from my mysql.user table. ATI, Catalyst and a new kernel

Please bear with me for a really stupid question... I have a Radeon HD 4550 video card and currently run the Catalyst driver, fglrx_6_9_0-8.741-1. If anyone wonders why I don't simply stick with the generic driver, the fglrx driver makes a WORLD of difference with Googleearth. Thanks!

Hi folks, Anyone know the whereabouts of libgtkembedmoz.so()(64bit) as it is needed by miro-1.0-1.el5.rf.x86_64 (rpmforge) I tried a whatprovides and have looked at epel as well as rpmforge - no luck. While I'm asking, I'm looking for an internet HD TV viewer - miro looked interesting - any other products you know of? TIA Rob

Backing up pass words

I am currently running CentOS 4 and want to install CentOS 5. To do that, I plan to install a new HD in my server box onto which CentOS will be installed. I will then copy the "home" directory from the old drive or from a backup on a USB drive, however I am not sure how to handle the Users/Passwords from the old installation. Many thanks... Set default file/dir permissions?

Greetings all- I have a system running CentOS 5.5 x86_64. It's serving NFS for several 'frontend' boxes in a web application setup. All data is stored in specific dir but written by different users. When the webapp attempts to read this information, it may or may not have permissions to this data. What I'd like to do is set 'default permissions' on the data storage directory (lets call this /var/appdata) so that any file or directory created under this is assigned a default set of permissions, and if possible, ownership. I've looked at and tested umask but it only seems to allow/disallow specific permissions, not force permissions. Am I missing something? How can I force all files/dirs created under a specific directory to have the permissions (and ownership if possible) that I specify? Thanks! Tim Nelson Systems/Network Support Rockbochs Inc. Is oprofile still working?

Hi all, Is anyone using oprofile? I'm getting segfaults from opreport at the moment, and I'm not sure if it is opreport, or just me. In case it is something just plain daft I am doing, here is how it goes: opcontrol --reset opcontrol --setup --no-vmlinux opcontrol --start ... now I run my program, /tmp/myprog ... opcontrol --dump opcontrol --shutdown then I run, opreport -l /tmp/myprog and get: warning: [vdso] (tgid:4780 range:0x8d7000-0x8d8000) could not be found. warning: [vdso] (tgid:4784 range:0x860000-0x861000) could not be found. CPU: Core Solo / Duo, speed 1067 MHz (estimated) Counted CPU_CLK_UNHALTED events (Unhalted clock cycles) with a unit mask of 0x00 (Unhalted core cycles) count 100000 Segmentation fault The problem seems to come when I ask for symbols (-l). I can't seem to get much information out of other running programs either. I'm running the opcontrol commands as root, and I've tried opreport as root or myself. I'm sure I have done this successfully in the past (but this is the first time I have tried it in a while). I have what should be a fully patched CentOS 5.5 here. I see this: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=529028 , but it looks to be too old to be relevant (I notice I have the updated binutils that the final link in the bugreport points to). I've tried this on two different machines, but they are similar configurations I guess in that they are both 32bit intel machines. Hywel.

CENTOS DHCP Server and windows computer/host name ISSUE

Hi list, We are running few Centos5.4 and windows 2003 instance on CENTOS XEN virtualized environment , all the guest are getting the IP/NETWORK/GATEWAY setting from the DHCP Server running on CENTOS 5 server and the DNS configured on the windows 2003 server. All of the CENTOS Guests are getting the IP and the host name as per the DNS forward look up configured. For example If the CENTOS guest1 get x.y.z.1 as an IP and it gets the host name as machine1.example.com and so on . But none of the windows guest is getting the hostname or computer name from the DHCP server even though its getting the ip from the centos DHCP server properly , instead all the windows guest are setting up the hostname or computername as ORGNAME-withsomenumbers . eg: techsoft-342156 as a computer name . See at present we are not doing any static mapping of IP/HOSTNAME based on windows GUEST MAC address. So statically mapping the hostname/ip with guest MAC address is out of question now. Is there is any configuration to be tuned on dhcpd.conf or any files or parameter to be tuned on windows 2003 guests to get the hostname from the DHCP/DNS . i heard about some option like "*dhcpd opt 12*" on windows regisrty level will do the job , But am blank how to get things done . Also is there is a way to tune CENTOS DHCP Server to lease the ip to the dhcp client in uniform order rather it leases randomly . Help with Linux offline cached credentials on a Windows domain

I have modified the native config files both Ubuntu and CentOS systems (laptops) to allow them to be added to a genuine Windows Active Directory domain. When on the network logins work fine. Take the systems off the network, and the user, even though their credentials are cached, cannot log in. There are several documented bugs on this for both Ubuntu and RedHat. Some people have posted various fixes. I tried one, the user was able to log in offline, but then could no longer log back into the network. Insights would be most appreciated. I plan to set up a test system to try various of fixes until I either a) find something that works; b) determine the problem still needs fixing with no known good solution yet found. Thanks. Scott

Hi all, I downloaded latest CentOS 5.5 DVD i386 image from one of FTP's in a list. I've burned that image to DVD and created new DVD to use for fresh installations. Now when I install fresh CentOS 5.5 (in VM) I am getting info that there are 50 packages updates. This is ok when I have good internet speed (@work) but when I am home, this update takes a lot of time. I guess I can skip updates but I wasn't experiencing such annoyance with CentOS 5.4. My gues is that when CentOS 5.4 was finalized there is no updates to that DVD. Is there any suggestions ? -- Aleksandar dipl. ing. So, just today I noticed a problem with kernel 2.6.18-194 (CentOS 5.5) on several Intel DP965LT systems; the system beeps (such as terminal beeps) are no longer passed through to the external speakers. This is a problem because in our situation the boxes are distant from their monitor/keyboard, the system speaker on this motherboard is extremely weak, and there are no system speaker header pins on the motherboard. The problem goes away if I revert the system to 2.6.18-164 with no other changes. I looked through the list archives and searched the web for other people who have encountered this, but it's pretty specific (and hard to search for "system beep"!) Is there someplace can I find *detailed* release notes on the differences between -164 and -194 kernels to help in looking for the problem, pinning it down, and submitting a patch (and/or building my own kernel), or should I just download the SRPMS and dig in? i can't install centos on my poweredge 2950

hi i m trying to install centos5 on my poweredge 2950 with no luck. the raid controler is LSI Logic / Symbios Logic MegaRAID SAS 1078 (rev 04) indeed all is going fine during the installation but when i reboot the server panic the first error i got is this one error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot as ext3: block device required it seems that it can't find the /dev/root devices. but when i boot in rescue mode the / partition is found without any problem. i can chroot in it i have tried with 5.5 and 5.4 x86_64 but i always got the problem. i m really stuck with that :( Does someone has an idea of what could happened?

Dovecot attack

aide rpm requirement

I normally don't have yum upgrade anything automatically, but a server that I didn't set up does just that. Last night, aide was upgraded, and then failed to run due to "libgcrypt mismatch". Shouldn't the rpm spec file for aide deal with the libgcrypt problem (meaning I think it should be part of the requirements to upgrade libgcrypt whenever aide is upgraded as some sort of dependancy)? Need tip on an inexpensive printer for college student using CentOS 5.5

Sending my son back to college with a dual-boot laptop with Win 7 and CentOS 5.5. He uses Win7 to manage his iPod and SW that sometimes issued by a professor for a specific course...otherwise he uses CentOS for everything else. That setup worked well last year, except for printing. He has a low-end Cannon printer that is not supported in the Linux realm. Most of his coursework was uploaded to "Blackboard" and rarely did he have to print anything. On the rare occasion when he had to print a paper/briefing, his work-around was to build the paper/briefing in OO, save in Office 2003 format on a USB drive, boot to Win7, load in MS Office and print to the Cannon printer. I'm looking to clean that mess up for him before sending him back to school. Looking to buy an inexpensive printer he can use on both sides of this laptop. Any suggestions? Dave M

CentOS 5.5 flex == Fedora 6 flex ?

Is CentOS 5.5 Flex the same as Fedora 6 flex ? Have you seen the package name ? Find this because I need to update my CentOS 5.5 flex for compiling new wine 1.2....but that is another problem.... I have a question about the 389 ds

Hi ,all : I am a newbie to here and I also install the 389 ds in our company for managering all users account and passwd . Today , The boss asked me if the ds could set the users vnc screen geometry in the config file . Because the user's computer screen is not the same and have different geometries. If it could , then we were happy that can solve the user's vnc problem . Then , I try to search it via Googling , but have not search the useful information about it yet . I know we can use the ds to set the uid or home directory and so on , can the 389 ds do it ?Or maybe add some atrributes ? Could someone give me some suggestions about it ? Thanks in advance ~

When I open the screensaver windows in the kde, I find that it is blocked . I switch to the gnome, it is the same. Is it some rpm that I do not install it?

Announce list digest ??

It seems that the past month or so the CentOS Announce list digest has no longer been sent out to the general CentOS list ( this list ) although the CentOS Web site still says that this list is subscribed to the Announce list in digest form. I've been checking, and the announce message does not seem to be getting caught in any spam filter that I use. Have a question , Suppose i had a client tell me that he can access the web page but it takes long time to view the pages the website is a static website ( suppose this website does not server dynamic data or does not connect to a database )... what would one check other than : the server load ( cat /proc/loadaverage ) , the Apache logs , the number of client connection ( netstat -tupln |grep :80 |wc -l ) -- how would i know if it a client side issue or a server side issue ........ -- Regards Agnello D'souza

Dear all, I have a virtual machine with the following specs: Core 2 DUO 3.2 GHZ 4 GB RAM hdd: IDE 320 GB 32 bit OS: centos 5.2 I'm using it for local development with a number of Virtual hosts, and a big mysql database. the prob: At times, with no specific reason. system becomes extremly slugish. http requests takes forever to be served. Even ssh connections takes time to connect, and a simple command such as "clear" takes anywhere between 3 to 10 seconds to execute. i've checked TOP, over and over again and it's always within the following: CPU load average is max 10 % , and at that specific time it's never above 30 % RAM: swap is never used, there's always around 1.5 GB of free memory so it's not a matter of CPU nor RAM. so my next thought were that HDD is maxing out on the hosting physical server. i checked on the physical server, and HDD I/O is within normal range. and other VMs workign on the same physical server are running smoothly.. so what can i do more to troubleshoot? this is happening more than it should without any scenario in common. any advice on how to troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated... PS: any command that may show I/O in KB/MB on the HDD ?

SDA and HDA

With the default settings in my Supermicro motherboard CentOS calls my SATA drive /dev/hda. If in bios setup I change 'Native Mode Operation' from auto to 'Serial ATA' it boots up calling the drive /dev/sda. I keep thinking its likely better under /dev/sda not? Any problem switching it to that after install? Matt

Hi all, I've a particular host on my network that when I run; rexec -l username -p password remotehost command it just hangs. When I do; rexec -a -l username -p password remotehost command i get; Where are you? If I do; rexec -l username -p password localhostname (not just localhost but its actual name) command it works. Any ideas would be very appreciated. - aurf
