Just went to update a couple systems this morning, and first one machine took nearly 15 min to find the mirrors (and it should be getting it all from our own repo, actually), and then the next one showed about 8-10 mirrors down, including Harvard and VCU. Anyone know what's going on? mark

Introduction and request for help with virtualization

Good morning everyone. This is my first post to this list. I am very new to Linux so please bear with me. Also, English is not my first language so please excuse me if I am unclear. I am trying to install CentOS Linux operating system in a virtualization setup. I have already built four host machines with CentOS 5.5 and KVM virtualization. I can install fine if I do a manual installation. I am now trying to automate the process. To this goal, I have create multiple LVMs inside my new volume group. The name of the volume group is vmstorage_vg. The problem occurs when I try to run the installation. I found a script via google: #!/bin/sh virt-install \ -n calcnode01 \ -r 1024 \ -f /dev/vmstorage_vg/calcnode01 \ --cdrom=/software/iso/CentOS-5.5_x86_64-boot.iso \ --accelerate \ --vnc \ -x "ks=ftp://192.168.0.101/pub/ks/calcnode01.ks ip=192.168.0.101 netmask=255.255.255.0 dns=192.168.0.20 gateway=192.168.0.1 text console=ttyS0" When I start this script from the SSH terminal it starts but I cannot see anything being installed. I entered the virsh console and see the calcnode01 entry if I do a list. If I try to connect using virsh I do not see anything. The kickstart was created from the anaconda file created from the manual installation. I enabled the options to create the filesystems. I think the installation is waiting on some input but I cannot see any console. I have tried with and without the "console=ttyS0" option. Thank you everyone for your time.

Kerberized NFS4 w/AD 2008 R2

Is anyone currently using CentOS 5.5 with 2008 R2 AD authentication and a fully Kerberized NFSv4? If so would you mind sharing your configuration with me? I have been able to successfully get it working with Windows 2003 as discussed earlier on the list http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2010-July/096374.html With the exception that I had to use dynamic UIDs on the machine since we don't have Services for UNIX installed. Instead of going with a long drawn out certification of Windows 2003 R2 w/SFU, we plan to target our deployment in line with our Windows 2008 R2 campus deployment. I have followed everything that I did with Windows 2003 to get it working but NFSv4 w/Kerberos doesn't seem to work with 2008 R2 at all. No matter what I try I consistently get WARNING: Client not found in Kerberos database while getting initial ticket for principle NFS/hostname@DOMAIN using keytab or ERROR: No credentials found for connection to server any help would be appreciated. I've been banging my head against a wall for a while now and may have damaged to many brain cells to see what's going wrong. -- James A. force b/w printing

Has anyone an idea, how to force users to print b/w on a color printer. We are in the process to deploy color printers to some of our offices where they use centos 5.5 as their OS. They need the printers to print some advertisement material. But for everything else, they don't need it. And because of the costs of the color printing we would like to force them to use B/W where not explicitly necessary. Is there a way to force a printer driver to be just B/W even if it is a color printer. So i could install a second color printer which would only be available to a special print user.

kernel panic not syncing fatal exception due to reiserfs -- rebooted properly on ext3

Hi we had one of our mail servers , going on kernel panic mode ( not syncing fatal exception) ... cause /var/queue/postfix was on reiserfs part .. it has not been giving us any isssue quite some time , but yesterday and today it went on Kernel panic mode , when we hashed out the reiserfs part it booted properly .. we formated the part^ on ext3 later and things working fine now . Could any one have a idea why this could have happened . how to install Atheros AR5008 on CentOS 5.5 in console-only mode?

Hi all, I hope someone can help me. I'm trying to setup a D-Link DWA-547 on CentOS 5.5 x64 in console only mode, i.e. there's no X installed. The Wiki article suggests using NetWork Manager, but since there's no X installed on this server, it's not possible. How do I go about installing this card? Im getting errors like JBD: failed to read block at offset 4360 on a raid 5 parition , have run several fcsk on it.... are these Journal errors recoverable? Does anyone here have any "feel" for the "Battery disconnected" and "Battery reattached" log entries? The rebooting came as a result of me turning off modems, router, external drives, monitor, cordless phone and finally, the computer, trying to locate a quiet but annoying "chirp". The "chirps" stopped when I tilted the UPS to look at the front panel. As you can see, log entries stopped at as suddenly as they started. Hi,all : Of course I am new to Linux and dual booting but I want to learn so here is my question. I already have my hard drive partitioned into 3 partitions (60G and 150GB and 150GB) and I already have Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (RC) installed on my computer. My question is, how can I install CentOS 5.4 64-bit (or any other version of linux) on the third partition? Is this even possible? Thanks in advances ....

Hi, I've encrypted some database dumps with openssl bf -d -in dumpfile.bf -out dumpfile -k mykey bad decrypt 14142:error:06065064:digital envelope routines:EVP_DecryptFinal_ex:bad decrypt:evp_enc.c:325: The weird thing is if I do the same with smaller files it can decrypt with no problem. I use openssl-0.9.8e-12.el5 on Centos 5.4. Please could you tell me what I am doing wrong? /bin/su wont work inside a chroot?

Unable to mount devices in rescue mode

Booting to CentOS 5.5 works and I am able to login with all my devices mounted. When I boot from the install DVD and type "linux rescue" I eventually get the message, after attempting to have one of the screens mount my partitions in read/write mode: "An error occurred trying to mount some or all of your system. Some of it may be mounted under /mnt/sysimage." But nothing appears mounted under /mnt/sysimage. Does anybody have any idea of why this error is happening ? Should I try mounting my CentOS 5.5 partitions manually at this point ?

Boot message about "resume device"

When I boot CentOS 5.5, I receive the message: Unable to access resume device ( UUID = some UUID etc. ) How do I find out what actual device to which this UUID refers ? It does not appear to be a block device since it does not show when I try 'blkid'. To what does "resume device" refer ? The boot succeeds but I would like to know what this messages means.

Trying to get a grasp on NTP server/client access control options

Hi, I'm currently sinking my teeth into NTP, to build a local time server. So far, configuring a local NTP server and getting the clients to connect to it works well. Now, I'm thinking about securing the whole thing. BTW, I made a copy of the original ntp.conf file and started my own from scratch. Right now, I have five printed books opened on the corresponding chapters (Carla Schroder's Linux Cookbook, RHEL 5 Unleashed, Foundations of CentOS, etc.) plus the same amount of online tutorials. Right now I'm having a bit of a hard time grasping the various access control options. Here's a few lines from ntp's default configuration in CentOS : --8<------ /etc/ntp.conf ----------------------------------------------- ... server 0.centos.pool.ntp.org server 1.centos.pool.ntp.org server 2.centos.pool.ntp.org ... restrict 0.centos.pool.ntp.org mask 255.255.255.255 nomodify notrap noquery restrict 1.centos.pool.ntp.org mask 255.255.255.255 nomodify notrap noquery restrict 2.centos.pool.ntp.org mask 255.255.255.255 nomodify notrap noquery ... --8<-------------------------------------------------------------------- This means roughly : "use these three public NTP servers to synchronize, but don't let them mess with your configuration". Now, here's something from NTP's official documentation : You may use either a hostname or IP address on the 'server' line. You *must* use an IP address on the 'restrict' line. Here's the according link to the documentation : http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Support/AccessRestrictions Which leads me to the assumption that these three 'restrict' lines in the default ntp.conf configuration in CentOS are useless, since they specify hostnames, and not IP addresses. I hava not CentOS's CD,but i had made a live-usb of debian5,when i entered its rescue mode ,i found it need a CD,then i entered a shell ,but i cannot find the fs,i donnot know how i can mount the fs,because it hadnot mount command,any idea? I find CentOS had some problem:sometime there is a fs error,all icons cannot load ,then i tried log in the shell,it said there was fs error,however i rebooted the system ,everything was ok! In all those problem,i had not do any bad thing to the system.

DHCPD

Not sure if there is a DHCPD/PXE forum so I will ask here. I have been trying to get netboot to work (i.e. a machine with nothing on it but a NIC card, no linux, no operating system, whatever) boots up and receives a file from a dhcp server. This dhcp server gives it all the Linux stuff it needs so a full install can be done over the network. I actually got this working by turning my desktop into a DHCP server and placing the Linux images. My problem? Now everyone, especially with windows machines, is complaining that their machine keeps telling them "unknown network" and "no internet connection". Oops, my DHCP server was intercepting all the other DHCP requests normally for our actual router (192.168.5.1). I can get around this by unplugging my machine from the LAN and just having it on a very small network with only two IPS (my desktop DHCP server and the machine doing the boot). However, I would rather stay connected to the LAN especially if I have to go out over it to get an install package (like DDD). Can I somehow tell my desktop only to handle PXE requests and anything else should go to 192.168.5.1? Couple minor questions but I can save time asking here too: I can't figure out the correct "option" or keyword to assign host name via DHCP. Is there a way I can have a user choose whether to install 4.5 or 5.4 (CentOS) via boot? I put multiple choices into the C0 file but it ignored all but one.

Samba PDC + BDC using LDAP

I am trying to implement Samba Domain Controller with replication using LDAP . My intention is to create two Samba DC servers with LDAP backend , then to set one as master and other as slave , then replicate LDAP database in master to slave I shutdown second samba server and only first samba DC was running . Then I added one XP client to first samba server , I can successfully logged in to the domain Then I shutdown first server and started second server (every settings in first and second server is same . DHCP failover ... Some questions.

Hi, I plan to reorganise our IP management and I'd like to implement a slave DHCP server. Right now we assign IP addresses based on the ethernetadress of a client 1:1. The tutorial here [1] is simple and looks like the thing I need. I do have a lot of subnetworks and my cisco router has an DHCP helper address set. I know I'll have to add the second dhcp-server address. My questions now is: Dose the dhcp-slave syncs the dhcp data from the master? Or do I have to copy the data to the master AND slave? Any other sugesstions or comments? Hello, I have the AR9285 wireless adaptor on an HP DV6-2128ca notebook. I can see it. it comes up in NetworkManager but never gets an IP. the router is a linksys using WPA/PSK security. Questions about clamd, amavisd and squidclamav

Hi list, I have a small server with a Postfix, amavisd and ClamAV installed and works fine. I install a squid proxy with squidclamav. Clamav works with /etc/clamd.d/amavisd.conf, but squidclamav cannot connect through the Unix socket in /var/spool/amavisd/clamd.sock. How can I configure clamav to create another Socket in /var/spool/squid/clamd.sock for example ? The service is clamd.amavisd, how can I change it to a more standard clamd deamon. Thanks a lot Kevin

LiveCD on USB won't boot

HI, I tried to build my own liveCD on USB-device. I've formatted my usb-stick: # mkdosfs -F 32 -n usbdisk /dev/sda1 Then I copied the iso-image to my stick: # livecd-iso-to-disk CentOS-5.5-i386-LiveCD.iso /dev/sda1 After that I tried to boot with that new device: # qemu -hda /dev/sda -m 256 But, then I become this error-message: "Initial menu has no LABEL entries!" Strange misbehavior from system-config-printer on CentOS 5.5

I had to print a file directly from my VMWare Windows XP guest to my Brother laser printer and now I can't run system-config-printer. The file was one of those screwy PDFs that even Adobe Reader 9.3.2 can't print on my CentOS (there's something in the file that inhibits the printing). Occasionally I've been able to get around this in the past by using the GIMP to reformat some pages in such files, but this one is 56 pages and I needed to print the whole thing. I tried printing it through the PDFCreator on the Windows guest, but that PDF also would not print. I tried printing it to a file on both the CentOS host in AR and the Windows guest (also with AR), but the resulting PS file is unreadable - the document viewer shows "Keyed info" on every page and nothing else. So, I used the VMWare Removable Devices feature to attach the printer to the Windows guest and the file printed fine. In the past, this has forced me to power off the printer for CentOS to be able to use it again, and I did that, too, but not right away. First I tried to print a test page with CUPS. That failed, so I canceled the print job. Then I tried to start system-config-printer - nothing. I got the security shield on my panel but no s-c-p window. I unpublished the printer and stopped it with CUPS, power cycled it, then re-started and re-published it. This time CUPS was able to print the test page, but s-c-p seems to be dead. The most I get is a small window marker on the panel that says "Starting Printing" and then it goes away. I didn't see anything relevant in the /var/log logs, but I'm not sure which log to look in. Any ideas on what happened? Thanks. Mark

CentOS 5.5/i386/32-bit CD installation hickups

Hello listmates, I've got a few older 32-bit PC's that only have a CD drive (no DVD). So I downloaded all the ISO's and I thought I'd install CentOS 5.5 on this 1.25 GB P-3 (I think, don't remember what CPU it's got right off hand, not that it should matter). So I tried it there, got a fatal exception. OK, no problem - thinking that maybe something was wrong with that machine I decided to try it on a different one, a P-3 with 384 MB or RAM. Same thing happened. So here's my question: has anybody successfully installed CentOS 5.5 on a 32-bit machine (i386) using individual CD's as their installation media? Thanks. Boris.

I'm getting those generic segmentation faults on a Centos 5 htpd 2.2.3-11 webserver. So far, I've not been able to track down what might be close to causing this. I've read about mod_whatkilledus, but don't know if I can install this in any way on my server or if it's still even valid. Has anyone used this? How was it installed, if so? I would like to find someone who can: -monitor the server (and even monitor MySQL if possible) -optimize it -fix problems -manage backups -migrate it to another hosting company if that is necessary. I understand openlogic might offer some of the services above. I already contacted them and waiting for a reply. But I thought maybe someone here can offer me some advice on this matter. I tried the webmin but it can't allow to set user to do modify specific virtual host config files and upload files to the specific webroot assigned by the admin/root. Hope anyone could help me out. OpenLDAP authentication, account expired when it's not.

I am trying to set up LDAP authentication for CentOS workstations, but can't get it to authenticate properly. Authentication fails saying the account has expired when I know for certain that it has not (e.g. ldapsearch authenticated with the appropriate uid and password returns shadowLastChange 14816 and shadowMax 99999). The last time I did this seriously for authentication was using Apple iMacs authentication against a SuSE Linux machine so it's entirely possible I'm not doing the right thing today. Most of the sites where we're using ldap and nss are not authentication, but simply going to user's $HOME directories to deliver e-mail to Maildir stores which doesn't require authentication. FWIW, I just checked an old SLES9 system authenticating against another SuSE system by telnet'ing to its POP3 server and that works as expected so it's something different in the way SuSE's PAM and CentOS' works (using MD5 passwords). I have done a fair amount of google/RTFM as well as reading the pam documentation on the CentOS client machine, and don't find anything that helps me figure out is causing it to think the account has expired. The LDAP attributes that I think are relevant on a test account are below. Hi , all : I installed two ldap tools in two servers : one is called 389 ldap serverwhich is installed 389 ldap tool in it , and the other is called CentOS openldap server which is installed openldap tool in it . So I have an problem about the account synchronization in two servers. That means , If I delete one account from the 389 ldap server, then that account also does not exist in the openldap server Could someone give me some suggestions ? By the way, the two servers are installed the CentOS 5.3 x86_64 . Thanks in advance .....
