kernel panic not syncing fatal exception due to reiserfs -- rebooted properly on ext3

Hi we had one of our mail servers , going on kernel panic mode ( not syncing fatal exception) ... cause /var/queue/postfix was on reiserfs part .. it has not been giving us any isssue quite some time , but yesterday and today it went on Kernel panic mode , when we hashed out the reiserfs part it booted properly .. we formated the part^ on ext3 later and things working fine now . Could any one have a idea why this could have happened . how to install Atheros AR5008 on CentOS 5.5 in console-only mode?

Hi all, I hope someone can help me. I'm trying to setup a D-Link DWA-547 on CentOS 5.5 x64 in console only mode, i.e. there's no X installed. The Wiki article suggests using NetWork Manager, but since there's no X installed on this server, it's not possible. How do I go about installing this card? Im getting errors like JBD: failed to read block at offset 4360 on a raid 5 parition , have run several fcsk on it.... are these Journal errors recoverable? Does anyone here have any "feel" for the "Battery disconnected" and "Battery reattached" log entries? The rebooting came as a result of me turning off modems, router, external drives, monitor, cordless phone and finally, the computer, trying to locate a quiet but annoying "chirp". The "chirps" stopped when I tilted the UPS to look at the front panel. As you can see, log entries stopped at as suddenly as they started. I already have my hard drive partitioned into 3 partitions (60G and 150GB and 150GB) and I already have Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (RC) installed on my computer. My question is, how can I install CentOS 5.4 64-bit (or any other version of linux) on the third partition? Is this even possible? Thanks in advances ....

Hi, I've encrypted some database dumps with openssl bf -d -in dumpfile.bf -out dumpfile -k mykey bad decrypt 14142:error:06065064:digital envelope routines:EVP_DecryptFinal_ex:bad decrypt:evp_enc.c:325: The weird thing is if I do the same with smaller files it can decrypt with no problem. I use openssl-0.9.8e-12.el5 on Centos 5.4. Please could you tell me what I am doing wrong? Unable to mount devices in rescue mode

Booting to CentOS 5.5 works and I am able to login with all my devices mounted. When I boot from the install DVD and type "linux rescue" I eventually get the message, after attempting to have one of the screens mount my partitions in read/write mode: "An error occurred trying to mount some or all of your system. Some of it may be mounted under /mnt/sysimage." But nothing appears mounted under /mnt/sysimage. Does anybody have any idea of why this error is happening ? Should I try mounting my CentOS 5.5 partitions manually at this point ?

Boot message about "resume device"

When I boot CentOS 5.5, I receive the message: Unable to access resume device ( UUID = some UUID etc. ) How do I find out what actual device to which this UUID refers ? It does not appear to be a block device since it does not show when I try 'blkid'. To what does "resume device" refer ? The boot succeeds but I would like to know what this messages means.

Trying to get a grasp on NTP server/client access control options

Hi, I'm currently sinking my teeth into NTP, to build a local time server. So far, configuring a local NTP server and getting the clients to connect to it works well. Now, I'm thinking about securing the whole thing. BTW, I made a copy of the original ntp.conf file and started my own from scratch. Right now, I have five printed books opened on the corresponding chapters (Carla Schroder's Linux Cookbook, RHEL 5 Unleashed, Foundations of CentOS, etc.) plus the same amount of online tutorials. Right now I'm having a bit of a hard time grasping the various access control options. Here's a few lines from ntp's default configuration in CentOS : --8<------ /etc/ntp.conf ----------------------------------------------- ... server 0.centos.pool.ntp.org server 1.centos.pool.ntp.org server 2.centos.pool.ntp.org ... restrict 0.centos.pool.ntp.org mask 255.255.255.255 nomodify notrap noquery restrict 1.centos.pool.ntp.org mask 255.255.255.255 nomodify notrap noquery restrict 2.centos.pool.ntp.org mask 255.255.255.255 nomodify notrap noquery ... --8<-------------------------------------------------------------------- This means roughly : "use these three public NTP servers to synchronize, but don't let them mess with your configuration". Now, here's something from NTP's official documentation : You may use either a hostname or IP address on the 'server' line. You *must* use an IP address on the 'restrict' line. Here's the according link to the documentation : http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Support/AccessRestrictions Which leads me to the assumption that these three 'restrict' lines in the default ntp.conf configuration in CentOS are useless, since they specify hostnames, and not IP addresses. I hava not CentOS's CD,but i had made a live-usb of debian5,when i entered its rescue mode ,i found it need a CD,then i entered a shell ,but i cannot find the fs,i donnot know how i can mount the fs,because it hadnot mount command,any idea? I find CentOS had some problem:sometime there is a fs error,all icons cannot load ,then i tried log in the shell,it said there was fs error,however i rebooted the system ,everything was ok! In all those problem,i had not do any bad thing to the system.

DHCPD

Not sure if there is a DHCPD/PXE forum so I will ask here. I have been trying to get netboot to work (i.e. a machine with nothing on it but a NIC card, no linux, no operating system, whatever) boots up and receives a file from a dhcp server. This dhcp server gives it all the Linux stuff it needs so a full install can be done over the network. I actually got this working by turning my desktop into a DHCP server and placing the Linux images. My problem? Now everyone, especially with windows machines, is complaining that their machine keeps telling them "unknown network" and "no internet connection". Oops, my DHCP server was intercepting all the other DHCP requests normally for our actual router (192.168.5.1). I can get around this by unplugging my machine from the LAN and just having it on a very small network with only two IPS (my desktop DHCP server and the machine doing the boot). However, I would rather stay connected to the LAN especially if I have to go out over it to get an install package (like DDD). Can I somehow tell my desktop only to handle PXE requests and anything else should go to 192.168.5.1? Couple minor questions but I can save time asking here too: I can't figure out the correct "option" or keyword to assign host name via DHCP. Is there a way I can have a user choose whether to install 4.5 or 5.4 (CentOS) via boot? I put multiple choices into the C0 file but it ignored all but one.

Samba PDC + BDC using LDAP

I am trying to implement Samba Domain Controller with replication using LDAP . My intention is to create two Samba DC servers with LDAP backend , then to set one as master and other as slave , then replicate LDAP database in master to slave I shutdown second samba server and only first samba DC was running . Then I added one XP client to first samba server , I can successfully logged in to the domain Then I shutdown first server and started second server (every settings in first and second server is same . DHCP failover ... Some questions.

Hi, I plan to reorganise our IP management and I'd like to implement a slave DHCP server. Right now we assign IP addresses based on the ethernetadress of a client 1:1. The tutorial here [1] is simple and looks like the thing I need. I do have a lot of subnetworks and my cisco router has an DHCP helper address set. I know I'll have to add the second dhcp-server address. My questions now is: Dose the dhcp-slave syncs the dhcp data from the master? Or do I have to copy the data to the master AND slave? Any other sugesstions or comments? Hi, Does anyone know how to configure Postfix to use SMTP authentication on a relay host? i.e. I have a Linux server, running PostFix on an ADSL line with a dynamic IP. Thus I can't just send out emails from this server but need to relay it via our ISP's SMTP server, which is very unreliable. Now I want to relay the email via another SMTP server where a user account with the same domain has already been setup, but I got no idea how to get it to work on SMTP authenticiaion. Wifi not working

Hello, I have the AR9285 wireless adaptor on an HP DV6-2128ca notebook. I can see it. it comes up in NetworkManager but never gets an IP. the router is a linksys using WPA/PSK security. Would/could someone please help me out trying to get this to work? Hi list, I have a small server with a Postfix, amavisd and ClamAV installed and works fine. I install a squid proxy with squidclamav. Clamav works with /etc/clamd.d/amavisd.conf, but squidclamav cannot connect through the Unix socket in /var/spool/amavisd/clamd.sock. How can I configure clamav to create another Socket in /var/spool/squid/clamd.sock for example ? The service is clamd.amavisd, how can I change it to a more standard clamd deamon. Thanks a lot Kevin

LiveCD on USB won't boot

HI, I tried to build my own liveCD on USB-device. I've formatted my usb-stick: # mkdosfs -F 32 -n usbdisk /dev/sda1 Then I copied the iso-image to my stick: # livecd-iso-to-disk CentOS-5.5-i386-LiveCD.iso /dev/sda1 After that I tried to boot with that new device: # qemu -hda /dev/sda -m 256 But, then I become this error-message: "Initial menu has no LABEL entries!" The same shit happens if I try to boot my host with that usb-device? Any idea? Any hint 4 me? ttyl, Django

Strange misbehavior from system-config-printer on CentOS 5.5

I had to print a file directly from my VMWare Windows XP guest to my Brother laser printer and now I can't run system-config-printer. The file was one of those screwy PDFs that even Adobe Reader 9.3.2 can't print on my CentOS (there's something in the file that inhibits the printing). Occasionally I've been able to get around this in the past by using the GIMP to reformat some pages in such files, but this one is 56 pages and I needed to print the whole thing. I tried printing it through the PDFCreator on the Windows guest, but that PDF also would not print. I tried printing it to a file on both the CentOS host in AR and the Windows guest (also with AR), but the resulting PS file is unreadable - the document viewer shows "Keyed info" on every page and nothing else. So, I used the VMWare Removable Devices feature to attach the printer to the Windows guest and the file printed fine. In the past, this has forced me to power off the printer for CentOS to be able to use it again, and I did that, too, but not right away. First I tried to print a test page with CUPS. That failed, so I canceled the print job. Then I tried to start system-config-printer - nothing. I got the security shield on my panel but no s-c-p window. I unpublished the printer and stopped it with CUPS, power cycled it, then re-started and re-published it. This time CUPS was able to print the test page, but s-c-p seems to be dead. The most I get is a small window marker on the panel that says "Starting Printing" and then it goes away. I didn't see anything relevant in the /var/log logs, but I'm not sure which log to look in. Any ideas on what happened? Thanks. Mark

I am trying to mirror a directory using wget and the resulting files as expected are taking the name of the string in the url after the last "/". Anyone know a way around this? I am using the mirror option so I don't have to keep track of what to get making it simple. Thanks! jlc

CentOS 5.5/i386/32-bit CD installation hickups

Hello listmates, I've got a few older 32-bit PC's that only have a CD drive (no DVD). So I downloaded all the ISO's and I thought I'd install CentOS 5.5 on this 1.25 GB P-3 (I think, don't remember what CPU it's got right off hand, not that it should matter). So I tried it there, got a fatal exception. OK, no problem - thinking that maybe something was wrong with that machine I decided to try it on a different one, a P-3 with 384 MB or RAM. Same thing happened. So here's my question: has anybody successfully installed CentOS 5.5 on a 32-bit machine (i386) using individual CD's as their installation media? Thanks. Boris.

I'm getting those generic segmentation faults on a Centos 5 htpd 2.2.3-11 webserver. So far, I've not been able to track down what might be close to causing this. I've read about mod_whatkilledus, but don't know if I can install this in any way on my server or if it's still even valid. Has anyone used this? How was it installed, if so? I don't really want to start messing with configuring httpd, so I'd like to keep this simple and RPM-based if at all possible. Thanks, Steve Campbell

Hello, I have this website hosted on a CENTOS box. I would like to find someone who can: -monitor the server (and even monitor MySQL if possible) -optimize it -fix problems -manage backups -migrate it to another hosting company if that is necessary. I understand openlogic might offer some of the services above. I already contacted them and waiting for a reply. But I thought maybe someone here can offer me some advice on this matter. I am trying to bring in a fedora 13 rpm, when compiliny objcopy is given a target of efi-app-x86_64, when I do a objcopy --info it is not listed. PHP 5.2.0 was released almost four years ago and according to the release announcement, http://www.php.net/archive/2010.php#id2010-07-22-1 the developers say that, in future, any further security fixes will only be released on a case-by-case basis. Version 5.2.14 fixes about 60 flaws, some of which present security risks such as potential memory leaks in string functions. PHP 5.3.3 was released http://www.php.net/archive/2010.php#id2010-07-22-2 at the same time, containing approximately 100 bug fixes. Among the security-relevant bugs are buffer overflows in the native MySQL driver. This release also contains an incompatible change which concerns methods with the same name as the last element of a namespaced class name. Hi All, Any could suggest open source tool like CPanel that could do the following? -User access control *user will be able to modify specific virtual host config file. Example is /etc/httpd/conf.d/domain.com.conf *user will be able to upload files to the specific webroot (example only /var/www/vhosts/domain.com) *user will be able to access MySQL server with can do create database,upload database, etc... I tried the webmin but it can't allow to set user to do modify specific virtual host config files and upload files to the specific webroot assigned by the admin/root. Hope anyone could help me out. OpenLDAP authentication, account expired when it's not.

I am trying to set up LDAP authentication for CentOS workstations, but can't get it to authenticate properly. Authentication fails saying the account has expired when I know for certain that it has not (e.g. ldapsearch authenticated with the appropriate uid and password returns shadowLastChange 14816 and shadowMax 99999). The last time I did this seriously for authentication was using Apple iMacs authentication against a SuSE Linux machine so it's entirely possible I'm not doing the right thing today. Most of the sites where we're using ldap and nss are not authentication, but simply going to user's $HOME directories to deliver e-mail to Maildir stores which doesn't require authentication. FWIW, I just checked an old SLES9 system authenticating against another SuSE system by telnet'ing to its POP3 server and that works as expected so it's something different in the way SuSE's PAM and CentOS' works (using MD5 passwords). I have done a fair amount of google/RTFM as well as reading the pam documentation on the CentOS client machine, and don't find anything that helps me figure out is causing it to think the account has expired. The LDAP attributes that I think are relevant on a test account are below. So I have an problem about the account synchronization in two servers. That means , If I delete one account from the 389 ldap server, then that account also does not exist in the openldap server Could someone give me some suggestions ? ssh and dd

Tonight I have to boot a diskless server with iLO and dd a remote image available by ssh onto a usb key. As there is no local place to store the image, whats the most efficient cmd to push the image from the remote server using ssh into the local pipe pushing out to `dd of=/dev/sdx`? Would a remote execution of `dd if=/dev/sdx` be the best over ssh? I suppose I could use nc and do away with ssh, is that in the CentOS rescue mode? Thanks, jlc

Therefore, I would like to define my keyboard's multimedia keys for some functions: 1) Clear field (might be accomplished by Select All then Delete) 2) Cut (standard Ctrl-X clipboard, not X11) 3) Copy (standard Ctrl-C clipboard, not X11) 4) Paste (standard Ctrl-V clipboard, not X11) To start, the key that I would like to assign for Copy has these properties: Scancode (showkey -s): 0xe0 0xba 0xe0 0xea Keycode (showkey): 158 Keycode (xev): 166 I have tried these .Xmodmap lines and none of the worked to assign the key to Copy: keycode 158 = XF86Copy keycode 166 = XF86Copy I should note that I _think_ that XF86Copy affects the mouse highlight-and-middle-click clipboard, not the ctrl-c|ctrl-v clipboard. It is the later that I do need, not the former. If I get this worked out, Cut and Paste should be easy (ha!). However, I am still at a loss about what to do with the "Clear field" button. Boot from CD

I am running CentOS 5.5 and I want to create a boot CD so that if my boot partition is moved I can still boot from the boot CD and re-initialize grub again. Is there some easy to use utility which will enable me to do this ?

www.centos.org - SSL Cert Expired - CSS fubar'd

Hi All, I hadn't seen mention of it on the mailing list yet so I thought I'd post it. It seems the wildcard SSL cert for *.centos.org has expired. Since the www.centos.org stuff references its CSS via the http[S] urls, the CSS and images are now missing from http://www.centos.org/ "The certificate expired on 7/16/2010 7:23 PM." Mike
