Tonight I have to boot a diskless server with iLO and dd a remote image available by ssh onto a usb key. As there is no local place to store the image, whats the most efficient cmd to push the image from the remote server using ssh into the local pipe pushing out to `dd of=/dev/sdx`? Would a remote execution of `dd if=/dev/sdx` be the best over ssh? I suppose I could use nc and do away with ssh, is that in the CentOS rescue mode? Thanks, jlc

As I am now managing a CentOS server, I've installed 5.4 on a spare desktop partition. A lot of my work is to copy and paste from various text fields online and in a local text editor. Therefore, I would like to define my keyboard's multimedia keys for some functions: 1) Clear field (might be accomplished by Select All then Delete) 2) Cut (standard Ctrl-X clipboard, not X11) 3) Copy (standard Ctrl-C clipboard, not X11) 4) Paste (standard Ctrl-V clipboard, not X11) To start, the key that I would like to assign for Copy has these properties: Scancode (showkey -s): 0xe0 0xba 0xe0 0xea Keycode (showkey): 158 Keycode (xev): 166 I have tried these .Xmodmap lines and none of the worked to assign the key to Copy: keycode 158 = XF86Copy keycode 166 = XF86Copy I should note that I _think_ that XF86Copy affects the mouse highlight-and-middle-click clipboard, not the ctrl-c|ctrl-v clipboard. It is the later that I do need, not the former. If I get this worked out, Cut and Paste should be easy (ha!). However, I am still at a loss about what to do with the "Clear field" button. Boot from CD

I am running CentOS 5.5 and I want to create a boot CD so that if my boot partition is moved I can still boot from the boot CD and re-initialize grub again. Is there some easy to use utility which will enable me to do this ?

Hi List, been chasing my tail for the last two hours and getting nowhere on my wifes laptop. I only do updates monthly on her machine, as it is safely behind firewalls and only does email and browser stuff. I have never had audio problems on this laptop, Centos just worked from day one - even the wireless. It appears that the 5.5 kernels and related audio driver snd-hda-intel do not function. postgresql copy to and selinux

I need to run a "copy table to '/home/user/dir/copy.txt';" but I get permission denied. Filesystem dir modes are ok and I get no event logged in audit.log, but if I setenforce 0, I can do the copy. This explains auditd silence: # sesearch --audit |egrep postgres.*home dontaudit postgresql_t user_home_dir_t : dir { getattr search }; dontaudit postgresql_t home_root_t : dir { getattr search }; I changed the "dir" type to tmpfs_t and I could write with "\copy" but not with "copy". Anyway, what are the best practices to allow postgresql "copy to" a subdirectory of a home directory (without disabling selinux)? install on raid1

Hi All, I'm currently trying to install centos 5.4 x86-64bit on a raid 1, so if one the 2 disks fails the server will still be available. i installed grub on /dev/sda using the advanced grub configuration option during the install. after the install is done i boot in linux rescue mode , chroot the filesystem and copy grub to both drives using: grub>root (hd0,0) grub>setup (hd0) grub>root (hd1,0 grub>setup (hd1) grub>quit then reboot, but is still get the error : disk boot faillure, insert linux install disk. does anyone now what i'm doing wrong? here is a copy of my partition scheme. KVM iptables rules

After I installed kvm I noticed that some rules are appended automatically by some tools that come with kvm packages(I installed all KVM group with yum) . The problem is that after I appended my rules I and used the /etc/init.d/iptables script to save changes in /etc/sysconfig/iptables I saw that after restarted the machine that tool appended the rules once again ... so now I have double entries for kvm rules. Does anyone know how can I block this mysterious tool to append rules in my tables ? Kind Regards, Silviu Hutanu

Hello, This message just came across on another mailing list I am on. The little dig on Unix as being old and Windows being new got me annoyed so I wanted to reply, but with some real contacts that he asks for at the end. I figured there might be some folks who could help him out. Feel free to reply on list or to me, and I will forward on your contact info. Message follows: " Our company has 30 shops that connect to a central server where the point -of-sale software runs, and is currently operating on Unix (it´s an old system we acquired when we bought another company). It seems obvious we have to replace this Unix architecture with something more modern (and better able to manage our growing needs). The computer consultants we work with have suggested two options: - Moving to Windows Terminal server (cheaper) - Moving to Citrix with virtualized servers (more expensive but apparently much faster and more powerful). Does anybody have any experience wotking on Citrix (or Windows Terminal Server) and have any views on them? Are there better options available for small to mid sized companies (we currently have 50 or so users logging it but expect to grow to 150-200 relatively quickly). Problem installing WordPress on CentOS

Hi, I have a curious problem installing WordPress on a local LAMP server running CentOS 5.5. I have some other (dynamic) websites running on the same machine without problems. Here's what I did. 1) Create a 'wordpress' database in MySQL monitor. 2) Download WordPress, unzip it into /var/www/html/ 3) # chown -R apache:apache /var/www/html/wordpress 4) Open Firefox on http://localhost/wordpress 5) Follow instructions (fill in database name, database user and password, etcetera). And here's where things go wrong. When I click on "Begin installation", Firefox wants to "open" the file install.php by leaving me one of the two following choices : a) edit "install.php" in GEdit b) download "install.php" I'm puzzled. Why doesn't install.php simply open as a page? Any idea what went wrong here? Cheers, Niki

I am trying to create one using the 64bit install DVD iso and so far the USB either won't boot (unetbootin) or the installation aborts after I select the iso location on the USB key (manual). I always used to use Inquisitor for this, but the hd tests are flaking out on the cciss syntax and I don't have time to dig into it, the machine is essential and I need to know whats needing to be replaced asap. odd automount trip

Hi all, Not sure how to start but I have an automount map tripping as soon as automount starts. I've no services that use that mount point and am baffeled as to why its mounted. When I remove the map entry fro that mount point, I get complaints in / var/log/messages from automount about the missing mount point. Any ideas how I can finds what's causing the mount? Sending files from mobile to CentOS via Bluetooth

Has anyone here managed to send files from a mobile phone to a CentOS system via Bluetooth? I'm trying with a Samsung E1310, using the GNOME tools, but can't get it to work. I can send files from the Linux box to this phone using the Nautilus bluetooth plugin (nautilus-sendto-bluetooth), and have also managed to "pull" some data I've been trying to send, via "obexftp". If I try to initiate a transfer from the phone, however, it will just display a generic "connection failed" message. If I run gnome-obex-server from the command line while doing this, I get $ gnome-obex-server conn_request: bdaddr <addres of phone> conn_complete: status 0x00 But that's pretty much it. Any ideas? I'll also include some hcidump output below... Note that based on a simple web search, it does look like others have experienced the same thing, but I didn't really get much out of the information I found in terms of figuring out how to resolve the problem. I'm using the latest packages from the CentOS 5 repositories. Fsck on mdraid array

Something seems to be wrong with my file systems, and I want to fsck everything. But I cannot. The setup consists of 2 hds, carrying 3 raid1 (ext3) file systems (boot, /, swap). OS is up-to-date CentOS 5. So I boot from CentOS 5.3 dvd in rescue mode, do not mount the file systems, and try to run fsck -y /dev/md0 fsck -y /dev/md1 fsck -y /dev/md2 For each try I get an error message: "Superblock could not be found..." "The device does not seem to contain a valid ext2 filesystem..." Well, of course not, the filesystem is ext3, not ext2. I also tried fsck.ext3, but the error messages stay the same. Weird /dev/dm-0

Dear All, I got a little problem installing rhel 4u7. I have 4 x 146Gb disk on my server. 2 x 146 with raid 1 and 2 x 146 without raid. When I installing rhel 4u7 a got 3 disk /dev/sda, /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc The problem is, after I finish installing the os, there are another device appears in fdisk -l /dev/sda1, /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdc1, and /dev/dm-0p1. And i can't mount the /dev/sdb1 it said device is busy. I can't mount /dev/dm-0p1 either. I don't have any multipathd install in my system, but why rhel4u7 create that /dev/dm-0 device? You're right to say PAE goes to 64GB although in the past various distros had kernels compiled for different max addresses for various reasons. 4GB address space still applies to 32 bit apps. To use more than 4GB tricks as such (http://www.puschitz.com/TuningLinuxForOracle.shtml#ConfiguringVeryLargeMemo…) need to be used. :) I haven't had to use these kinds of tricks for years since every machine I encounter has 64 bits and Oracle runs nicely on them perfectly happily. I miss reading through Puschitz's tips & tricks. Lately all Oracle versions run pretty much out of the box on CentOS/Upstream. No sense of satisfaction from seeing it running after battling with it for hours. :)

boot process glitch due to missing 2nd disk

I just installed centos on a Dell that used to have 2 internal disks, but I removed one just before the install. Now when I boot it, it stops and outputs a message complaining about the missing disk and I have to hit F1 to get it to continue booting. Is there some bios setting that is causing this? Obviously, I'd like it to just forget about the missing disk and go ahead and boot with just one, the one that was present when I installed the OS. I want to RTFM, but I'm not really certain where to start, it's outside my comfort zone. mahalo, Dave

directory permissions set to 600?

Hello all, Today, I ran across a directory in /etc/ on one of our servers whose permissions where set to 600 (drw-------) with root being the owner. The directory is for the firewall package for the server, so it is not something malicious. Checking some other systems, they also have this directory and the permissions on those servers is also 600, so it isn't just a messed up permissions on this one machine. What is the difference between permissions of 600 and 700 for a directory, that is owned by root (group root)? redundant networked secure file system recommendation

Hi all, We are currently running a NFS-based server centric setup. I would like to set up something where I can easily have more than one redundant server, security/authentication (this part seems a little flaky with NFS, at least did several years ago), with the capability to easily add/remove servers as necessary, take redundant servers down for maintenance, etc. Total volume we expect to run on the server side will be somewhere between 10-30 TB. The servers will most likely be CentOS machines, the clients mostly Linux machines with some Macs and possibly Windows (the latter part not that important). Any insight, thoughts and recommendations will be much appreciated. Thanks. Boris.

DSL battling rojter - help!

My internet connection is through a Siemens Speedstream 4100 DSL modem connected to AT&T (sbcglobal.net) and a Dlink WBR-2310 router. Late last night, I changed the administrative password on the router, and for some reason it didn't take right, so I had to reset the router to get the password cleared. Unfortunately, this also lost all my connection settings to the DSL, and I lost the internet for a while. After some effort and a couple of phone calls to AT&T technical support, I determined the following: 1. If I connect my CentOS (main) box to the DSL modem, I can log into the modem and check all the settings, and I can ping sites on the web from there, but I can't actually get any web pages to load. This is using Firefox 3.6.4 (the L&G). 2. If I connect a WinXP box to the modem, it gets to the web without any trouble. 3. If I connect the router to the modem and run the machines through the router, no one gets to the web. I managed to get it to a point where I could acquire an IP address, but nothing on the web was visible. I'll figure out the router problem one way or another, but it really concerns me that I couldn't get to the web from my CentOS box at all. Before the router password fiasco, everything was working absolutely perfectly, and I did not change ANY settings on my machines. Now, I do have a line in /etc/hosts that sets my machine id, and its IP address to 192.168.0.100, which is what it normally should be for access through the router as it is the primary machine on it. (I need that because my VMWare SMB is set up to use that for connections between my virtual XP machine and my CentOS host.) Could that be the problem with internet access directly through the DSL modem? If so, how do I change this to ensure that the hostname is set properly but the IP address matches whatever the DSL modem gives back? How do I then also ensure that the hostname and address are set right so my host-VMWare samba connection still work? Otherwise, what? Thanks. Mark

Trigger after yum update

Hello, we have installed non-repository based software on our centos servers (e.g. vmware tools). Each time we do 'yum update' we have to run several scripts to check if these software works after update. Sometimes we forget ... It it possible to configure any sort of triggers which will run automatically after 'yum update' ? (Migrating from 3.0.x to 3.3.x Can Fail to Update passdb.tdb Correctly (bug # 6195) . passdb.tdb break occurs in the file where the new samba starts. Any suggestions or someone going through the same problem? (I'm running samba 3.0.28 with upgrade to 3.5.4 (Sernet repo) []´s Camun.

LVM issue

Hi We use AoE disks for some of our systems. Currently, a 15.65Tb filesystem we have is full, I then extended the LVM by a further 4Tb but resize4fs could not handle a filesystem over 16Tb (CentOS 5.5). I then reduced the lvm by the same amount, and attempted to create a new LV, but get this error message in the process lvcreate -v -ndata2 -L2T -t aoe Test mode: Metadata will NOT be updated. nss_pam against centos-ds fails for non-root users

Hi all, I'm new to LDAP and want to use nss_ldap (version 253) against a centos directory server (version 8.1.0) running on the same host. compilers a security risk?

I manage a web hosting server that we've recently upgraded, in part so we could accommodate a domain that will enable community mapping. In a recent exchange of mails one developer said: "I could build the package directly on the server machine you have, provided that the potential security risk posed by having compilers installed is not an issue." and another said: "What sort of security risk is there in having compilers installed on a working server? "Obviously we can remove the compilers, however when Mapserver or postgis get updated, we will need to build new packages somewhere. One option: create a second VM for mapchat. We'll put the build environment on it, and only turn it on to make new packages." I don't have enough experience to assess the security issues. Does anyone have an opinion on this? freetype bytecode interpreter

It may yet be too early to get a definite answer about this, but I'm wondering what the status of the formerly patented bytecode interpreter in freetype will be in RHEL/Centos 6 and possibly future updates to RHEL/Centos 5. This is not a "Dell-specific BIOS hack". Dear child, ask your folks about PCs. I think it was only this decade that PCs would actually boot *without* a keyboard. EVERY PC EVER MADE before would not. Nah! Every BIOS since I remember (at least from 1990) had a choice on the first page, Standard BIOS Setup. "Halt on all errors, Halt on keyboard/video errors, Halt on no errors". At least these three were always present. Of course the default is always "Halt on all errors". Unless you modify the settings on purpose, that's what happens.

Odd fsck problem

In the last month - definitely after going to 5.5 - I've tried to fsck a drive (340 days, or some such, unchecked). 960G RAID 5, I *think*, possibly serial port attachment to a JetStore RAID array. Every time I try, it gets to 70.0%, and stops. As in, I left it run last night, having started it late afternoon, and around 23:00, it was still exactly there, not even .1% more. On that, I also had a -dd flag, since running it the other day with a -d gave me nothing at all of debugging info; neither did the dd. Note that my manager tried to run one on another server, also attached to a JetStore, and it also stopped at the exact same point. This has never happened before, and fsck has handled these in the past. Anyone seen anything like this, and/or have ideas as to what I can do to fsck to at least *tell* me why it was gagging? mark

"Cannot allocate memory" java exception - apache still returns "200 OK"

I'm configuring some monitoring for a particular java/tomcat application. We have noticed the occasional "Cannot allocate memory" error. When this occurs apache still seems to return a "200 OK" status code. Anyone know how to configure this so that when java has an error, apache will also return some kind of error?

kernel mod compilation frustration

I want to add a sleep() to a module. It tells me it can't find <time.h>; if I tell it "/usr/include/time.h", it gives me a ton of errors (I *have* put the #include just above where I call sleep, not up at the top). Any clues as to what I'm doing wrong? With kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5, I just added the line extern unsigned int sleep( unsigned int seconds ); and everything was wonderful; with the current kernel, it complains sleep is undefined. ?? mark

GFS performance issue

Two web servers, both virtualized with CentOS Xen servers as host (residing on two different physical servers). GFS used to store home directories containing web document roots. Shared block device used by GFS is an ISCSI target with the ISCSI initiator residing on the Dom-0, and presented to Dom-U webservers as drives. Also, providing a second shared block device for quorum disk. If I hit the web site on just one of the nodes, it behaves as expected. If I try to load the websites from both nodes at the same time (two web browser instances), the load average on both nodes spikes, and page loads very slowly. The site I am trying to host is very high traffic, and if the servers can be nearly brought to there knees with two web browser instances running on a single workstation, that's not going to work. I am not seeing any error messages in the logs regarding the cluster. Any help or suggestions on how to troubleshoot this issue would be greatly appreciated. RDAC for IBM DS4700

Hi all, I have problem with my servers. I use two of HP Blade Servers and RHEL 4.6 installed on them, and have IBM DS4700 connected to them. In those servers are running RHCS (Red Hat Cluster Suite) with GFS for handling Oracle Database. Yesterday, I had missing one partition from the storage, suddenly. I called IBM and they suggested to use RDAC. The question is, Why should use IBM RDAC for multipath on RHEL 4, and why HP Blade + HP EVA Storage don't use any addition plugins software to keep server + storage connection? Hi; I want MySQL source rpms pertinent to CentOS 5.4; what packages should I request via yum? I first went to mysql.org but I could not find (perhaps I am blind) any MySQL source tarballs or rpms, only binary rpms. I would like to compile MySQL from source. BTW, what happened to centos.org? When using Firefox or Chrome it looks like it is text-only as if I were visiting it with lynx! Thanks in advance for pointers/advice towards answering a very lame question. Problem with yum

I am experiencing a problem with yum on one of my CentOS-5.5 systems. Specifically, on Friday past (July 16), I ran yum update as root. Yum displayed all of the outdated packages and asked if I wanted to proceed. An answered yes. This first package downloaded was nss. At this point yum simply stopped processing or responding. A ctrl-c at the yum session terminal window did not interrupt the task. Top did not display any yum processes. I killed that particular process to regain the console session, but I had to use -9 because nothing else worked. Yum continues to behave in this strange manner. Any invocation of yum with any option just stops responding. Before I manually remove yum and reinstall it using rpm could anyone provide a clue as to what might be happening here and how it might be cured. I found this one entry from yum in the log files: /var/log/messages.1:Jul 16 00:14:43 gway01 kernel: Out of memory: Killed process 1380, UID 0, (yum-updatesd-he). However, this entry occurred some time before I attempted my update task later that same morning. I would like to be directly copied on any replies as I am a digest subscriber. Finding DHCP IP of guest system

If I can log in to the guest through the console, I can of course find out what IP DHCP has assigned it. If I configure a static IP I can of course connect to the system there (if it runs services, the firewall allows it, all the usual caveats). Does there happen to be any way to determine from dom0 what IPs are participating in the network and which guests they belong to? (I'm configuring everything as bridged; basically I want to use virtualization to pretend I have a bunch of independent systems visible to the outside.) (I suppose just what the IPs are is enough; the number is small enough I could probe them until I found the system I wanted. Xen cpu requirements

I'm installing Centos 5.5 on a new Dell R301 server. I wanted to run Xen and have the full virtualization possibilities (this is our development support server, so it runs a few real services and is available for playing with things; putting the "playing with things" functions into virtual servers would protect the "few real services", and make it easier to clean up afterwards). I have enabled virtualization support in the BIOS. /proc/cpuinfo says I have model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3450 @ 2.67GHz and flags : fpu tsc msr pae cx8 apic mtrr cmov pat clflush acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht syscall nx lm constant_tsc ida pni est ssse3 cx16 sse4_1 sse4_2 popcnt lahf_lm The "vmx" flag doesn't appear to be set. (I'm working from <http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Virtualization-en-US/ch-op-sys-support.ht…>, by the way; I note that document is from 2007 or maybe even 2006, so perhaps some things aren't fully up-to-date.)
