spamassassin needs updating?

The spamassassin on my server is 3.2.5 and is stock CentOS 5.x. I do apply updates regularly. Most of my legitimate contacts are either whitelisted or sorted into folders before spamassassin sees them, but I have noticed an increasing amount of legitimate mail marked as spam. One issue seems to be the FH_DATE_PAST_20XX rule. I was able to fix that via running sa-update as root per http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/Rules/FH_DATE_PAST_20XX Should the rule be fixed in the actual RPM though since it is past 2010? Secondly a lot of mail is marked due to DNS_FROM_OPENWHOIS In SpamAssassin 3.3 and later, that rule is removed because: Status of bl.open-whois.org: DEAD http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/Rules/DNS_FROM_OPENWHOIS Shouldn't that rule then be removed from the CentOS RPM? I think I figured out how to remove it manually (give score of 0.0 on trigger) but if it doesn't work, it should be patched out of the CentOS RPM, no? Will CentOS patch it w/o rhel patching? IE where should I search for bug reports and file a bugzilla?

Amavisd-new UBE problem on Postfix server

This is a web hosting mailserver, so there are multiple domains being passed through this email system. I decided this new system would be Postfix and followed the Centos Wiki to aid in the installation and setup. It seems that Amavisd is throwing this error from time to time. ----- Subject: Considered UNSOLICITED BULK EMAIL, apparently from you From: "Content-filter at <mailserverdomainname.com> ----- and now I'll skip to the bottom of the error message ------ First upstream SMTP client IP address: [97.13.153.201] According to a 'Received:' trace, the message apparently originated at: [97.13.153.201], localhost 201.sub-97-13-153.myvzw.com [97.13.153.201] ------- which shows this email was sent through a smart phone on the Verizon network. The email settings on the phone are correct. The domain name of the sender is properly configured and email is working on their computer. I have searched for this and found many questions about why and only one ugly solution. It seems that if you add the domain name to @local_domains_maps = in amavis conf, the problem goes away, at least in some situations. Obviously not something one wants to have to do with each additional domain added to a server. Amavis is set to the default @local_domains_maps = ( [".$mydomain"] ); # list of all local domains on my system. $mydomain is set to the mailservername. Hi,guys: I am trying to setup OpenLDAP on CentOS 5.3 i386 for a client of mine. everytime I try running 'service ldap start', I get the following in syslog: root@xx ~: tailf /var/log/messages .....slaptest: sql_select option missing ....slaptest: auxpropfunc error no mechanism available ....slapd[4392]: sql_select option missing ....slapd[4392]: auxpropfunc error no mechanism available ....ldap: slapd startup failed I have checked the permissions on /etc/ldap.conf and /etc/openldap.conf and the two are chmod'd ldap:ldap Can anyone give me pointers? centos 5.5 on optiplex 745

Hi, we have some old dell optiplex 745 machines which have the Intel 965q chipset. The problem is, that they freeze as soon as the system tries to start the X system. It happens even before any log is written. This happens almost every time (for some reason it sometimes work, but 99% it fails). When i change the graphic driver in xorg.conf from intel to vesa it mostly works, but still i sometimes get a flickering screen, but this can mostly be resolved using ctrl+alt+backspace (sometimes you have to try this twice). We use the 1024x768 and 24 bit colors, so this shouldn't be the problem. Does anyone know a fix for this problem? Janez

posixGroup LDIF problem

Hi,all: I'm working on populating an OpenLDAP server (Dapper) for pam authentication. I'm having trouble import LDIFs for my groups. The following is and example: (this imports on CentOS 5.3 i386, openldap version is 2.3.43-3.el5 ) # org.X.admins dn: cn=admins,dc=X,dc=org changetype: add objectClass: groupOfNames objectClass: top objectClass: posixGroup cn: admins gidNumber: 1001 member: cn=admin,dc=X,dc=org I get the following error: adding new entry "cn=admins,dc=X,dc=org" ldap_add: Object class violation (65) additional info: invalid structural object class chain (groupOfNames/posixGroup) Now, if I strip it down a little, this will import: dn: cn=admins,dc=X,dc=org changetype: add objectClass: posixGroup cn: admins gidNumber: 1001 I don't see though how this is supposed to tie to a user without the member entries. So what is the wrong with it ?Could someone give me some suggestions? Thanks ~

CentOS 5.3 Xen installation trouble installing FUSE

Hi, I've got CentOS 5.3 installed as a Xen client installed. I've recently been trying to install TrueCrypt on the VM, but am having miserable troubles with the Fuse kernel module. To date, I've installed the following packages: yum install truecrypt yum install fuse However, to launch the fuse module, I need the dkms_autoinstaller running. However, when I try to start the dkms_autoinstaller service I get the following error messages: Jun 28 23:31:57 charliebrown dkms_autoinstaller: fuse (2.7.4-1.nodist.rf): Installing module on kernel 2.6.18-128.2.1.el5xen. Jun 28 23:31:57 charliebrown dkms_autoinstaller: Kernel headers for 2.6.18-128.2.1.el5xen are not installed. Cannot install this module. Jun 28 23:31:57 charliebrown dkms_autoinstaller: Try installing linux-headers-2.6.18-128.2.1.el5xen or equivalent. Indeed, the kernel modules available in yum are for 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5. I fished around, and found a kernel-headers package for 2.6.18-128.2.1.el5 (http://137.138.246.63/cern/slc5X/x86_64/yum/updates/repoview/kernel-headers…) I downloaded the RPM, and downgraded my kernel-headers package. So I now have the kernel-headers package for 2.6.18-128.2.1.el5 installed. However, when I try to start the dkms_autoinstaller, I still get the same error message indicating that the Kernel headers for 2.6.18-128.2.1.el5xen are not installed. Where can I find this package? They aren't on the Citrix repos. From the few threads I've read, ppl are suggested to download a DDK VM to build new modules, etc, but that still won't help me, as I need the headers on the actual machine to run the dkms_autoinstaller service. I'm currently stuck / lost. Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Eric

Can't install Centos with DVD on KVM.

Subject line explains most of it.... I'm trying to install Centos from a dvd iso, that has been verified on KVM (Fedora 13) box. Virtual machine boots, and will launch anaconda and will test the media, but on the next step after that it says it can't find CD media.

Hi; I've got MySQLdb installed (bridge to Python) and I can't figure out how to upgrade it. I did a find and got these paths: /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/SQLAlchemy-0.6beta2-py2.6.egg/sqlalchemy/dialects/mysql/mysqldb.py /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/SQLAlchemy-0.6beta2-py2.6.egg/sqlalchemy/dialects/mysql/mysqldb.pyc I don't have mysql-devel installed, so it wasn't that. Dual nw card problem again

I have had problems like this before. Probably there is something important that I don't know about routing. Let me introduce to you "Lasso2", a CentOS 4 www server that has been working perfectly well for years. Now I added a second nw card (eth1), automatically using kudzu. I cannot get this dual nw setup to work. The first nw card (eth0) stopped at once working properly, when I added the second card. Hw failure is probably outruled - the connection via eth0 works normally again if I remove the eth1 card and its settings (on reboot with kudzu). There are several symptoms with the dual nw card setup, and I cannot really get to diagnosis. 1) if you ping lasso2 (the problem machine) with the eth0 ip, the ping requests come in ok, but the ping responses leave the machine via eth2 - not good. I don't really know how to analyze routing and how to use ip (the program) to fix it, so please tell me about it. The "ip route show" output looks perfectly normal to me, it is similar to another 2-card machine I have running (though that is Centos v5) [root@lasso2 ~]# ip route show 62.236.221.64/28 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 62.236.221.75 62.220.237.96/27 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 62.220.237.114 169.254.0.0/16 dev eth1 scope link default via 62.236.221.65 dev eth1 2) if I ping _from_ lasso2 via eth0, it works ok, as long as the ping target is inside the same network segment. Virtualization as cheap redundancy option?

I'm wondering if virtualization could be used as a cheap redundancy solution for situations which can tolerate a certain amount of downtime. Current recommendations is to run some kind of replication server such as DRBD. The problem here is cost if there are more than one server (or servers running on different OS) to be backed up. I'd basically need to tell my client they need to buy say 2X machines instead of just X. Not really attractive :D So I'm wondering if it would be a good, or likely stupid idea, to run X CentOS machines with VMware. Each running a single instance of CentOS and in at least one case of Windows for MSSQL. So if any of the machines physically fails for whatever reasons not related to disk. I'll just transfer the disk to one of the surviving server or a cold standby and have things running again within say 30~60 minutes needed to check the filesystem, then mount and copy the image. I thought I could also rsync the images so that Server 1 backs up Server 2 image file and Server 2 backs up Server 3 etc in a round robin fashion to make this even faster. But reading up indicates that rsync would attempt to mirror the whole 60gb or 80gb image on any change. Bad idea. So while this is not real time HA but in most situations, they can tolerate an hour's downtime. The cost of the "redundancy" also stays constant no matter how many servers are added to the operation. Any comments on this or is it like just plain stupid because there are better options that are equally cost effective?

Yum archive for PHP greater than 5.2.1 for CentOS 5.4?

Whether I like it or not I need to get a version of PHP that is greater than 5.2.1 as the latest SugarCRM version require this and as I am a module developer I need to have one of the later versions of PHP on my machines. Does anyone know of a reliable and good archive for PHP that provides higher versions than the ones supplied by the upstream provider? Centos to use two ISP concurrently..?

Hi all, I'm currently getting my Centos working as a proxy (squid) on a 2 Mb bandwidth plan that's serving 20 users. it's all good though our need for speed is increasing by the day. soon enough i'll be serving up to 60 user, hence the need to get higher bandwidth though here where the problem is. as i'm using HDSL, 2 Mb is the highest plan available. hence, i need to get 2 HDSL subscriptions, in other words 2 modems/IPs to work with.. ( 2 x 2 Mb) the possibility to use routing table isn't feasible as these two ISP's would only be used for browsing, so routing destinations one way or the other isn't an option. i have two initial thoughts to solve this hope you could straighten me out if they're wrong or suggest something better that your experience lead you to use: 1. setup Openvz on a centos box, get two templates up and running with squid setup on them. each one with a different IP. Each template would be routed to one ISP, and both proxies would be used in child/parent proxy manner so i could use caching from both. and i could split my users in half, 1 half would be using Squid#1 and the other using squid#2. 2. the same squid box have two Nics, with two IPs, one routed to each ISP, i get squid listening to port " 80" on both IPs, and same as above, half of my users would be running on IP#1 and the others on IP#2. do all this make any sense? i'm seeking your help as both ideas does not seem very professional to me, and i doubt that's the optimal solution so any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks , --Roland _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail: Trusted email with Microsoft’s powerful SPAM protection. https://signup.live.com/signup.aspx?id=60969

Hi, Has anyone tried the latest wine 1.2 RC on CentOS 5.5. We have some applications that don't work with the latest stable release. They require at least 1.1.34, but i would like to try 1.2. Stop auditd logging all commands

Hello everyone, I have this box where auditd is logging every command typed on the system onto: /var/log/audit/audit.log Every line looks like: type=USER_TTY msg=audit msg=audit(124433....<snip> msg="command here" ... The strange thing is that I have other similar boxes and I don't see this behavior. I don't see any option in /etc/audit/* or any PAM module triggering it. Is there a way to stop this? I don't want to stop the service since "setroubleshoot" needs it. Any ideas? Thanks! Jorge

Announce list digest ??

I have just noticed that the main CentOS list ( this list ) is no longer receiving the digest from the CentOS-Announce list. This appears to have stopped about a month ago. Did I miss a notification that this practice would be discontinued, or has something broken? Centos 5.5 on a Toshiba Satellite L1500D - Wireless networking - Realtek 8172

I just installed Centos 5.5 x86_64 on a new Toshiba Satellite L1500D. Everything seems to work (so far) other than the wireless networking; lscpi tells me: 0e:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Unknown device 8172 (rev 10) I discovered that I need the realtek driver, so I found and downloaded these: rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1012.2009_64bit.tar.gz rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0017.0507.2010.tar.gz The version dated 2010 appears to be newer, but I can't find one of them that says "64bit" so I'm not sure if I can actually use it or not. I un-tarred it into /usr/src, then copied the contents of the firmware directory to /lib/firmware. When I try to run the make command I get this error. I get the same error regardless of which of the two driver archives I use. What am I doing wrong? Is there an easier way to get this working? I am having a couple of iptables issues with this type of setup myself. The RH manual says to insert a rule into the FORWARD chain like this: -A FORWARD -m physdev --physdev-is-bridged -j ACCEPT However, for the host does this not mean that every packet is accepted. As far as I can discern from the documentation, when one sets up a physically bridged network on a kvm host then every packet arrives across the bridge interface and, insofar as the host is concerned, anything that it does not orginate itself is forwarded. I may be wrong on this, but the behaviour of my ssh filters since putting that command in the FORWARD chain indicates that something along those lines is occurring. Resize all partitions bigger

I effectively have 1 drive /dev/sda (it's actually a hardware raid 10 array) I have lots of free sapce. I want to resize my partitions (boot, home, /) bigger. Going to use Clonezilla to make an image of each partition and save it on another box. Then re-partition and format new bigger partitions. Then restore images with Clonezilla. But I know UUID's will be wrong and I don't feel like creating new ones. I just want to use /dev/sdx Am I correct in assuming I only need to edit /etc/fstab and /etc/grub.conf or is there anything else I need to edit? Using CentOS Live CD to recover trashed RHEL system

Hi, There's a RHEL5 system somewhere across the internet with a trashed root file system. I have VPN access to the subnet where it lives. But the system is not talking to the network. The current plan is having an onsite person boot from a CentOS Live CD, copy a small script to configure networking, set a password for the centos user, start sshd, and tweak the default firewall to allow incoming ssh connections, once I have remote access to the live cd environment I'll create a new lvm logical volume, create a file system, and restore from a level 0 dump taken from a lvm snapshot just before things broke. I'm pretty confident I have all of the above under control. The part I'm not certain about is the grub voodoo to get the system to boot to the lvm with the restored root file system. I'm not certain of the vintage of the restored root file system it was built from an old RHEL5 installation cd and last updated a year or so ago. I have a CentOS 5.5 live cd .iso image staged for the onsite person to burn. Are there differences in the boot process for CentOS/RHEL 5.x versions that I have to worry about. Would it be better to try to get a closer match between the root file system and the live cd vintages. At the moment I'm googling for info on the grub incantations for changing the root file system logical volume. Any comments suggestions would be appreciated. Hardware RAID 10 server - reformat NTFS partition to ext3 and resize for Centos 5.5

Here's the situation. I have a dual boot machine - originally had Red Hat and Windows 2000 Pro. The NTFS partition never did seem to 'get along' with the Adaptec 2400A caching RAID controller. Linux always seemed to like the I2O drivers. I went from RH Enterprise to now running Centos 5.5. Works great! I really don't want the 200 gigs worth of NTFS. Can't I just run GParted from a CD, reformat the NTFS and append the space to the existing Linux partition? What will I have to do with LVM to see the expanded partion? - anything special? I've never done this before - is it really much more complicated than I've outlined here? Please advise this old simpleton. Many thanks in advance. Ed Westphal

Samba share configuration: r/w for some users, read-only for others

Hi, I'm using Samba for some basic setups like open shares for everybody, or restricted shares with Samba users and passwords. So far, everything works fine. I have two situations which both more or less amount to the same, and I don't know how to configure it. One is in a school, the other one in a town hall. 1) In the school, I'd like to configure a share that is readable and writable for all the teachers, and read-only for the students. The idea is that the teachers can write some assignments or various papers and then put them in the share so the students can access them (without modifying them). 2) Similar setup in the town hall. The mayor wants to have a share where he and his secretary can fully access the documents, write them and modify them, and the library users can then access them read-only. Is this feasible with Samba? And if so, what would the according smb.conf look like? Cheers from the sunny South of France, Niki

Bug in cfdisk?

Hi, I'm currently working through Sander Van Vugt's "Beginning the Linux Command Line" (Apress), just for fun. Right now I'm just trying out all the examples in chapter 5, dedicated to managing partitions and logical volumes. After some work with fdisk (which I normally use), the book introduces cfdisk (which I've been using in Slackware days). Curiously enough, CentOS' cfdisk doesn't seem to work. I'm experimenting with two USB sticks connected to an old NEC Powermate, which appear as /dev/sda resp. /dev/sdb. I can access them with fdisk OK and partition them any way I want. Except I can't seem to open them with cfdisk. When I try it, I get the following error message : ************************************** FATAL ERROR: Cannot seek disk on drive Press any key to exit cfdisk ************************************** Now I don't really mind about that error, since fdisk does anything I need. But I'm just wondering about why that happens. Any idea? Niki

Hello all, For (system) certification purposes, we have to upgrade our 4.4 machines to 4.7. In the past I usually have just reinstalled machines to save the (perceived) headaches of upgrading. That is not an option in this case. Are there any pitfalls to watch out for when upgrading? Is it even possible to go up 3 revisions? Hi list, We've had an interesting NFS performance issue with the following setup. Clients : CentOS 5.5, kernel 2.6.18-194.el5 Server : Solaris 10 kernel Generic_142901-08 Reading a file (not cached) with dd : dd if=file1 of=/dev/null bs=1024k count=100 performance is around.. 700 kB/s ! /proc/mounts shows rsize has been negotiated to 1mB If we force rsize to a smaller value, 32kB, the problem goes away and we're back around 70/80 mB/s read performance. Wiresharks show something interesting in the first (slow) case: It seems that the NFS client is "waiting" between requests: 1473 11.756852 client.net nfs1.net TCP 868 > nfs [ACK] Seq=9345 1474 11.757888 nfs1.net client.net RPC Continuation 1475 11.797837 client.net nfs1.net TCP 868 > nfs [ACK] Seq=9345 1476 11.798877 nfs1.net client.net RPC Continuation [....] Notice how the server replies within about 0,001s, but the client appears to be waiting 0,04s before asking for the next bit. (we captured the traffic from the client). This pattern repeats for the whole exchange It's likely we missed something, can't figure it out.. has anyone seen this before ? Cheers, Alex

How to specify the default route?

I have a machine with two net interfaces. it seems to always pick the wrong one (eth1) as the default route. I can change it with route del default route add default eth0 after it's up (or in rc.local, of course), but I'd like to figure out what I need to do this "the CentOS way" (e.g. edit some configuration file? Run some config utility, what?) once and for all. Can somebody point me to the canonical documentation on the subject? I've searched /usr/share/doc and the man pages, but I can't find anything useful. Googling for "default route centos" gives some interesting stuff, but nothing definitive. Thanks! Rick

When I using "tar cvhf and tar xvhf ", files have symbolic link replace by physical files. wield things is my friend using same command 'tar cvhf and tar xvhf". after restore link still there. does there has way when I using "tar cvhf" and "tar xvhf" I can get link back not physical files? NFS exports network mask

Hi, I need to export NFS shares to all clients in a subnetwork, except that one client will have different NFS options. I am not sure how to write subnest mask for this in exports file. For all clients it was easy as all I had to do was 10.0.0.0/16 or 10.0.0.0/255.255.0.0. How do I modify exports file to have special rule/entry for this particular IP? How can I diagnose? or is there something funny with the Kernel? Hardware: Supermicro X8DTL-iF motherboard. Intel Server Xeon E5502 1.86GHz Nehalem 8GB Ram Kingston DDR3-1333 w/ Parity w/ Thermal Sensor I have read on bugzilla note about mcelog and not supporting nehalem processor during error decoding. XFS on CentOS

Hi all, Does anybody know why unlike so many Linux distros (Fedora, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE) CentOS does not come with XFS support by default but rather requires custom modifications after the install in order for you to be able to support XFS on your CentOS machine? I was asked yesterday to try and find internationalized add ons or alternatives for our new Asian customers (Japan, Korea and China atm). Migrating away from Nagios

I'd try Zenoss. I wrote a big paper comparing Nagios, OpenNMS and Zenoss ( http://www.skills-1st.co.uk/papers/jane/open_source_mgmt_options.html ) - it's nearly 2 years back now but many of the basics are the same. At that time, I plumped for Zenoss but, to be fair, my main negative on OpenNMS was that it is written in Java - it did pretty-well everything I needed. On the Zenoss front, my main winges were the quality and reliability of the documentation and the code. Zenoss has done a HUGE amount of work on code reliability since then and the documentation is coming along. It runs Nagios plugins if you need that, and will use SNMP, WMI and ssh as protocols to talk to a device. The community is very active and, although Zenoss also have a commercial offering (Enterprise) as well as the free Core, we still seem to get very good air-time from the developers to help resolve issues and to take input from the community. And I want a tool that understands network equipment natively, not just it's own clients on only the hardware/OS's where you are able to run them. I can understand putting off testing OpenNMS back in the day when you had to get your own Sun JVM which was particularly painful on CentOS, but it has been bundled in the yum repo for a while now. Migrating away from Nagios

I have to rebuild a new Nagios box and thought this might be a good time to migrate away. I use snmp mostly for everything but with the fork Nagios endured I wonder about putting any more effort into the project. I probably should look at OpenNMS again, but the other options I think might work are Icinga (Should be trivial to migrate) or Zenoss or maybe even Zabbix? Anyone have experience in Nagios and care to share comparisons with similar projects with strong community involvement? Also, anyone currently running OpenNMS that can comment on the learning curve and level of flexibility coming from a Nagios user? Thanks! jlc

Samba3x daily logged errors with Win7 clients

In the course of upgrading from CentOS 5.4 to CentOS 5.5 I changed from using the samba (v3.0.x) packages to the samba3x (v3.3.8) packages, mostly because the newer version was said to better support Win7. The Samba server services Linux, WinXP, and Win7 clients. Now I get many, many errors logged to the Samba logs shortly after 3:00 AM, but only from the Win7 clients. I get roughly 430 sets of these messages in a twenty-second (!) period: [2010/05/25 03:17:36, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(748) create_connection_server_info failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED These errors are never seen in the Samba logs that track the Linux and WinXP clients, only the Win7 clients. I don't run virus scans or anything else (that I know of) on the Win7 machines in the middle of the night, but I do have the usual cron jobs running on the CentOS server around that time. Could be related to log rotation or something like that? I haven't seen a loss of connectivity, but then I don't use the client machines at 3:15AM. If there is a brief connection failure I wouldn't know it. I used my old (Samba 3.0.x) config file, user definitions and password database when I made the switch to the new (Samba 3.3.8) server and the newer code didn't seem to have any complaints with them. The client shares seem to work without any problems. Any thoughts on what could be generating all these errors? Thanks.

These packages have been introduced into the ELRepo testing repository (http://elrepo.org/) You can find these packages at: http://elrepo.org/linux/testing/el5/ The ELRepo project is a community project providing various additional kernel modules for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and derivative kernels that aim to be kernel independent. Next to this set of OCFS 1.4.7 kernel modules the project provides dozens of kmod RPM packages and hundreds of kernel modules for a variety of hardware and kernel functionality. A simple upgrade from 2.3.3 to 2.7.0, no config changes, can improve delivery rate by 50% in some cases (e.g. if you deliver thousands of emails to Yahoo).
