Increasing NFS Performance

Greetings all- I have a CentOS 5 (Final) system that is serving up content to several other hosts via NFS. The amount of data transferred is rather small as most of the files are under 100kb and each export has maybe 100 files that are accessed regularly. I'm finding that as I add more hosts accessing the NFS server, the performance seems to be getting poorer. There are obvious delays when doing simple 'ls' on an NFS mounted directory. The mounts are all done on the local LAN (100mbit FDX), all on the same broadcast domain, no routing. One of the clients is a physical CentOS 5 node, the rest (5-6 total) are OpenVZ containers also running CentOS 5. The NFS server is a Dell PE2950 loaded with 7.2K SATA drives. While the disks aren't exactly performance grade, the bottleneck does not seem to be the disks as access on the NFS server itself is 'normal'. Here are the items I've found so far that are told to increase performance. Since this is a production system, I have yet to try these: 1. Increase the number of instances of NFS running. (As found in /etc/sysconfig/nfs) 2. Try sync vs async behavior in mount parameters on clients 3. rmem_default and wmem_default parameters 4. rsize and wsize parameters (Dependent on MTU. Currently, mine is default at 1500) These are the items I'm planning to try but before I dive in (especially during a late night maintenance period...), I was hoping the list members brighter than me could give some comments on the above items and/or suggest some other things I might try. MiscFixed fonts in CentOS 5.5

Hi, I just did a fresh install of CentOS 5.5, as usual : base system, X Window system, GNOME, and then the apps I need. The MiscFixed fonts don't seem to be available in GNOME Terminal anymore. Has the package been renamed? Any idea where they went? It's my favourite font for the terminal. Cheers, Niki

Querying netgroup information

Hi I have been searching for commands to "debug" netgroup membership. I am using netgroups provided by ldap. I can do a ldap query but it seems a bit unwieldy to do. I have found a package on ubuntu called ng-utils https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/ng-utils/0.7-1 which does what I require and compiles very easily. It contains two commands netgroup and innetgr to query netgroup membership with. Two questions: * Is there a similar package with similar commands to query netgroup membership available for Centos? I have not been able to find such a package yet. * If there is no similar commands or packages available would it generally be usefull enough to repackage in rpm for Centos/Redhat/Fedora? Using a composite device under Centos 4.8 - no mouse clicks

I recently got an EEEbox. This is an Atom based nettop. It came with a wireless keyboard/mouse which talk to a 2.4Ghz USB adapter (a Chicony device as it turns out). Now if I plug this adapter into a Centos 4.8 machine both the keyboard and mouse are detected... but mouse clicks aren't. I can move the mouse, the scroll wheel works, but buttons 1/2/3 aren't detected. Neither in X nor in console gpm. It worked fine in Ubuntu 10.04, and obviously works fine with Windows XP. My feeling is that maybe perhaps the older 4.8 kernel doesn't have a sufficiently good driver so I might be forced to compile my own (*sigh*) but I was wondering if anyone else had come across a similar issue and had a work around? -- rgds Stephen

Physical-to-Virtual (VMware) & SELinux

Hello guys, I have a couple of servers that I'm about to virtualize to our VMware Vsphere ecosystem. For Linux servers I read that one needs to use the stand-alone converter (which is a live-cd that you boot from it and then you point it to your destination ESX). I would like to know from folks that have already done so...what was your experience like? Did everything went smooth? Any caveats? I'm worried about the filesystem extended attributes (SELinux). Will it survive the migration? Or will I need to relabel the whole filesystem again? Thanks, Jorge

Yum problem on Centos 5.3 (64-bit)

Hello, I'm having a yum problem updating a system on Centos 5.3, 64-bit ... i.e. 'yum update' returns "No Packages Marked for Update". Problem appears to be related to connecting to the mirrors where the repositories are located but I could be wrong in that. What's confusing me is that I have another system (Centos 5.5, 32-bit) that's working fine. Disabling services in CentOS 5.5

Hello all, I have been doing some searching for information about disabling services within a CentOS 5.5 install. I have found a few different opinions, and wanted to ask for some feedback. First off, the system is running a LAMP stack to serve a web application. It will only be doing email to send occasional messages out (sent via the application only). It will not be receiving email for any users. It is an CentOS 5.5 (fully updated) install running under VMware (esx, I believe). We are not sharing directories via nfs or samba (either from or to this virtual machine). >From my research, the services that I am thinking of turning off are: nfs (already off) nfslock portmap rpccgssd rpcidmapd rpcsvcgssd apcid apmd mdmpd mdmonitor Is there any reason that I need to leave any of these services running? Are there others that I should disable as well? cameras and CentOS

Hi I want to put up a few cameras connected to a CentOS box. I currently have a box with one camera and that works (USB), I can take a pic (the script does that) and see that on a webpage. However, I want to have a couple of cameras a little further away (more than 5 meters). USB has a limit, I have tried that camera with a longer cable and it does not work ... so I need to route that in a different way. Are there equaly as cheap other moethods? I am currently running CentOS 4.5 (which, through many Yum updates) now appears to be CentOD 4.8. 4.8 is still rather old, but I havbe lots of stuff (files and stuff installed). I would like to install Fedora but I am worried about losing all the stuff I have. I would have to back everything up, uninstall/reinstall things, etc. I am wondering whether there is some way to upgrade to Fedora from CentOS without just having to reinstall everything? - Done.

amazon ec2 and centos?

Searching through the archives, it seems this topic has come up several times in the past 2.5 years. Did anyone ever take on the tasks of creating an official CentOS AMI? We're currently using the RightScale ones, but I think it'd be ideal to have a clean CentOS AMI with the current kernels. Karanbir, you seem to have been the one on CentOS side who has had the most conversations with Amazon. Is that conversation dead? If we had a small committee with members from this list, would that help in any way? Ranging from doing the bundling work, to utilizing our account reps within Amazon to help us push this along? johnny

Lessee, first I tried rpmbuild, and that failed, because it *required* xen-devel. So I grabbed the tarfile from /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES, unbzip2'd it, untar'd it, and did a make. And ten or so later, I had 265 kernel modules. I don't want or need to install all of that, so I tried just building gspca, and that failed with unresolved errors. Does anyone know if I can just install gspca*.ko, or even some subgroup of that, or is it dependent on other of the built modules? Two other notes: on an FC 13 box, I see that gspca literally comes with the kernel - does anyone have a clue whether part of that subsystem is available, or is that what I'm looking at, above? Finally, in googling, I found a UVC that's supposed to deal with most USB cameras. Does anyone know anything about it, or will I still need gspca? mark

recognizing correct number of cores on CPU

I just installed centos 5.5 x86_64 on a new HP laptop. It has the core i5 processor. only 1 cpu is detected should be 2. This has happened before. Is upstream not keeping up with new processors released and updating the kernel? I'd rather not go through the process again of putting a newer kernel on the machine and having something different out there than "stock" centos. Jerry

Hi, I'm currently trying to get a grasp on DNS and Bind. I admit the documentation is quite confusing, either too laconic or way too detailed. So I'm trying to start from a working example, and then bite my way through it. I have a sample named.conf file from Carla Schroder's Linux Cookbook. In the opening global options, I have this : listen-on { 127.0.0.1; 10.11.12.1; }; allow-recursion { 127.0.0.0/8; 10.11.12.0/24; }; As far as I understand, the purpose of these two stanzas is to limit access to the DNS server to 1) the server itself and 2) the local 10.11.12.0/24 network. In that case, there seems to be some redundancy in the syntax. Correct me if I'm wrong. Can someone please explain (in plain words) the exact meaning of these stanzas ? Thanks, Niki

cpuspeed settings??

Hey, folks, Sometimes my workstation bogs down... slows to a crawl. Using gkrellm, it's obvious the CPU is the laggard. The top utility confirms: the load average gets up over 4 at times. But this occurs when cpu stepping pegs the speed at 600MHz. This processor is capable of 1.5GHz and when it's allowed to run at that speed, the load average is under 2, which is fine. So the question is: what's a good /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed file? This workstation is a notebook and it can get hot. Of course I'd rather type on slow machine than a machine with a fried mainboard, so a report of a high temperature should kick in the governor and lower the speed. Currently my /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed has no variables defined (it's been this way at least since Apr 24) and I don't know what the number ranges and other values for them might be. Redhat CD with kickstart file

Hi, I am trying to create a custom iso that I can use to install machines. I want to include my custom kickstart file on the distro and when its put in get the system to build using it. I have done some reading about this process, but i still havent been able to get it working with out any problems. I have ripped the contents of the iso by mounting it on a loop back device. I then put my kickstart file names ks.cfg into /isolinux/ on the ripped cd. I then use mkisofs to recreate the iso, but every time i boot from it i get either "unknown keyword in config file", "could not find kernel image: linux" or "invalid or corrupt kernel image" error messages. Has anyone got a step by step guid to how to do this as this is driving me nuts! Hope someone can help. Thankyou!

NFS - Permission Denied

Hi All, This is the settings of my NFS server (192.168.10.55) /etc/exports: /nfs/iso 192.168.10.0/255.255.255.0(rw,sync)<http://192.168.10.0/255.255.255.0%28rw,sync%29> >From the remote host, I mount it correctly. But when I write/create files/directory inside the mounted nfs directory (from /nfs/test), it will give me "Permission Denied". [root@remote]# mount -t nfs 192.168.10.55:/nfs/iso /nfs/test [root@remote]# mkdir /nfs/test/testing mkdir: cannot create directory `testing': Permission denied Hope anyone could help me to fix this. yum force

I'm trying to do an update to some servers... and they have both i386 and x86_64 perl. The latter won't update, because the idiotic *man pages* are dups. Is there *any* way, short of using rpm directly with a --force, to get yum to ignore the dups and do the update? And why does *anyone* make it so that a dup manpage is a reason to fail (and don't tell me they do it generically for any of the packages in the .rpm...)? mark

cyrus-imapd, sendmail and delivering plus address formats

CentOS-4.8 cyrus-imapd-2.2.12-10 sendmail-8.13.1-3.3 I have a mail hub which uses cyrus-imap with sendmail It has worked well for us on this and prior hosts going back to 1995. And, I do not have a problem with the current setup. What I would like to do however, is to deliver plus-formatted e-mail addresses directly to users subfolders in their mailbox tree. Such addresses take the form userid+subfolder+sub-subfolder(a)domainname.tld. How this is done I have not discovered. What I always get is an ".Address Unknown" smtp error. I have gone to both the cyrus and the sendmail lists respecting this issue. While there is a lot of information there following any of it does not seem to lead me anywhere fruitful. Does anyone here run a sendmail/cyrus-imap combination on CentOS that has direct delivery into user mailbox subfolders using the plus address format working? Remote X connection to CentOS 5.5 using Xming -ac

Shouldn't SSH set it to localhost:10.0 ? I try to set DISPLAY manually to localhost:10.0 and my_ip_address:0.0 and I have tried connecting as root and as a non-root user. rpm - diff and patch updating

I am attempting to create a rpm of the latest version of a program. The rpm for the previous version contains a number of patch files that make numerous changes various files in the tar.gz as downloaded from the project's website so it will work properly on Linux. The latest version of the program has changed enough stuff that some of the patches now fail to apply. "1 out of 1 hunk FAILED" and so on. Upon comparing the previous version's files to the latest version, I see that the problem is that some of the files that need to be patched have had some stuff moved around a bit, just enough to (apparently) cause patch to fail. By way of experimentation, I manually changed one of the files in the new version to match what the patch says it should be, then created a new patch file from that and it applies and appears to work fine. (I patched the previous version's file, compared the result to the original and made the same change in the new version's file.) This method seems to work fine when the change is only one or two lines, but some of the patches are somewhat more involved than that. It seems to me that there may be an automated way to handle this matter by somehow patching a into b, then compare a and b and make corresponding changes in c. Basically the same process that I just tried manually on a small patch file, without all of the labour and chance of a screw-up that would be involved in manually comparing the old files and rewriting the new file. I have two questions: First, am I going about this the right way? And if so, is there a way to automate the process as described in the previous paragraph? Second, what is the proper convention for handling this in a rpm? The obvious solution seems to be to create new patch files and throw the old ones away, then build the rpm from that. Some of these patches appear to go back several versions, though, so is there a better or more proper way to handle this than just throwing them out and making a whole new set of patches? how to set up pam_oddjob_mkhomedir (samba and ldap)?

Hi, I do have a samba server up and running and users are authenticated by ldap. Login to the samba server works as long as the user has a home directory. Now if I create a new ldap entry for an user I'd like to use pam_oddjob_mkhomedir to create a home directory if it dose not exist on login. But something fails on my system. I followed the redhat faq http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/docs/DOC-3973 which may be wron according to that bugzilla entry. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=429524 So I added session optional pam_oddjob_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel/ umask=0022 to /etc/pam.d/login using all other default settings and configs using the rpms provided by redhat EL 5.5 / Centos 5.5 rpm -qa|grep oddjob oddjob-0.27-9.el5 oddjob-libs-0.27-9.el5 the services are restarted, there are no errors in the log except from samba, that the login from the user fails because of the missing home directory. Dual personality Server (network pass through)

I have 3 nics in a NATed gateway file server. Two nics (eth1, eth2) provide dhcp and nfs services to an internal subnet via a dedicated switch. The other nic (eth0) connects to an external WAN switch to provide net access to the systems in the subnet. --- eth1 WAN switch eth0 --- | SUBNET switch --- eth2 Question: Is it possible to disable the NATing, nfs, dhcp and just somehow bridge the external WAN nic to the internal ones such that it's just a pass through? Basically having the server behave like a switch? Allowing the internal systems to join the network on the WAN. I know how to disable NAT, nfs and dhcp but not how to configure the nics. I know I could simply unplug eth1, eth2 from the server and plug them into the WAN switch but my goal is to script this so I don't have to physically plug and unplug network cables each time. 5.5 & gspca

Irritating quirkyness: we have a bunch of videocams. To use, we use gspca. Usually, on an upgrade, I just go into the gspca directory (which appears, from their website, to have not been updated since '07), make clean, make, make install. Having gone up to 5.5, did the same. The error, which is the status, *if* errno.h has any relation, says that it's an EXDEV, which suggests that it's trying to hard link across devices, which AFAIK it's not: the home directory for the user the device runs is is automounted, and it gets created there. Anyone have any clues why, all of a sudden, the first few packets are showing a status code? Could it be a timing issue? mark

problems building nfdump / nfsen

Hey folks, I posted this as part of another old thread but am starting a new thread for it because I got no response. I've also since found the nfdump mailing list but it seems to be dead. I was not able to find either of these guys in a CentOS repository anywhere, so I'm building them manually. Below was on CentOS 5.2. ---snip--- I'm going to kick this old thread because I'm just getting around to nfdump and nfsen myself, and am having trouble building nfsen. I do not see a mailing list for it so I'll try here first. I am using softflowd to pump netflow information from various linux boxes into a central collector. The collector is running nfcapd to capture everything. And I also want to run nfsen on this box to be able to view the pretty graphs on the web :-) I have verified with nfdump built on this box that the collector seems to be working fine - so far so good. Then when trying to build nfsen it complained about nfprofile not being there - so some googling later and I found that I have to go back and rebuild nfdump to include it. So I do : ./configure --enable-nfprofile which dies thus : [...] checking for stdint.h... yes checking for unistd.h... yes checking for rrd_update in -lrrd... no configure: error: Can not link librrd. Please specify --with-rrdpath=.. configure failed! But I check and I see I have librrd installed. yum downgrade working?

Hi, I recently accepted some updates that broke functionality due to a change in mapserver on my centos 5.5 box. I would like to try yum downgrade mapserver but when I do it goes through the motions and gives no output. What am I missing? After a reboot, the server failed to come back up. Booting from a USB hard drive?

I'm trying to learn Asterisk (specifically Trixbox) and, as you probably know, it runs on CentOS. I want to run it on my laptop and thought that I could install it to an external USB hard drive, like I've done with Fedora 12 and Linux Mint 8 (I like to keep my small CentOS/Windows dual booting hard drive in the laptop's hard drive slot). But it won't work. It kept giving me hard drive errors when I tried to install it to the USB drive, so I installed it in the regular hard drive slot in the laptop -- where it works fine. But when I move it to the USB enclosure, it starts to boot, but can't mount the partitions and goes into kernel panic. I checked this with my CentOS hard drive and it does the same. I'm guessing the only reason Linux Mint works is because it refers to all partitions as "sda" instead of "hda" -- so it doesn't know it's in the wrong slot (just a guess). Is there an easy fix for this? Is there some configuration file that I can change entries from "hda" to "sda" so the partitions will mount or is it more involved than that?
