Some Internet users, especially those inside corporations and behind smaller ISPs, may experience intermittent problems. The reason is that some older networking equipment is pre-configured to block any reply to a DNS request that exceeds 512 bytes in size. DNSSEC replies are typically four times as large. --- end excerpt --- I followed the link from the story to <https://www.dns-oarc.net/oarc/services/replysizetest>, a coordinating organization, and tried their test (as root): dig +short rs.dns-oarc.net txt And see that where I work, we're not ready. Is anyone following this, and/or have a HOWTO on enabling it for CentOS? mark (need to check this at home, too)

Hi, I'm having this Sendmail configuration problem and stuck. I've been doing googling/reading posts and none of the solutions matched my problem. I'm doing some testing, and have been getting this 550 5.1.1 ....User unknown error when I send the email to my company's email address. When I send it to an external email address, such as yahoo, the message delivered successfully. Of course, I'm doing the configuration behind a firewall. I'm using a relay too, and I did declare the relay host in 'SMART_HOST' in the sendmail.mc file and have also recompiled it to produce the sendmail.cf. 32-bit boot CD for 64-bit install using kickstart

Hi, I am using kickstart method for CentOS installation. The install is done using mirror site URL and not CD/DVD ISOs. However, the system is initially booted from 32-bit CentOS CD. When the install process starts I get errors as: - package rpm not found - abort/continue? - package lvm2 not found - abort/continue? - package grub not found - abort/continue? - ... - ... If I change install URL to 32-bit ISOs then everything works fine. Do I need to use 64-bit boot CD for this install? -- CS.

CentOS 5.4 off-center on SuperMicro console

I have a weird situation with a new installation of CentOS 5.4 x64, on a SuperMicro X7SBI server. The server has a <a href=" http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon3000/3210/X7SBi.cfm" target="_new">SuperMicro X7SBi motherboard</a>, board ATI ES1000 and Core2Quad Q9505 CPU. The kernel is When I login to the console, using a "17 CRT monitor (haven't tested others), the screen is off-center to the right. The only thing I can think of is the video driver, but I don't have X installed, so it can't be that. And I've reinstalled CentOS 3 times already thinking I did something wrong with the installation. It's not the monitor, since I have another CentOS 5.4 server, running on an Intel motherboard that looks normal with this setup. Reverse engineering USB devices

I'm pretty sure this is the wrong list, but maybe some clever people here can redirect me... I have a "RCA RS2100 Bookshelf Audio System" http://www.woot.com/blog/viewentry.aspx?id=2744 This is radio/CD/mp3 player... PLUS it can stream audio wirelessly. You plug a USB device into your PC and you can remote control what gets played from the RS2100 remote control ("Wireless Musiclink"). BUT only with Windows Media Center. When I plugged the device in it appears to look like 3 devices; a HID, an audio device and something else I can't remember (I'm not at that machine at the moment). My feeling is that the HID is used to inject commands from the RS2100 (eg "play track <x>"), the audio device is for streaming and the third device is feedback for the remote display. The question I have... how can I reverse engineer the protocol used so that I can make this work on my CentOS machine? (I don't want to run a Windows instance just for remote audio!). C5: correct place for routing scripts?

Hello I have several Centos 4 and Centos 5 servers. Because of the nature of the environment, there are some static arp entries made with arp command and then source routing made with "ip rule/ip route" -commands. Those commands are now placed at /etc/rc.d/rc.local which is bad: if server is rebooted, those commands will be done correctly but if administrator restarts network with "/etc/init.d/network restart", source routes will disappear. RedHat/Centos qualified admin knows only about network restart init script, so I try to avoid doing any hacks. I could edit the init script (/etc/init.d/network) but changes could disappear with updates. So, what is the correct place for different commands (arp, ip, whatever) that is executed (a) once when network started (b) once when network stopped (I don't need but nice to know) (c) once per every interface (I don't need but nice to know) Best Regards, Kimmo

how to reroute all ADSL traffic via another server on the internet?

Hi all, Does anyone know, if it's possible to reroute all (i.e. HTTP / FTP / DNS / SMTP / POP3 / IMAP / etc) from an ADSL connected machine via another server, which is currently hosted with IS and has full internet access? i.e. Can I setup another machine, on a different public IP than the dynamic ADSL IP as default gw? OR do I need todo something on that machine to work as a router for such a setup? X11 problem with remote login via SSH

HI all! Strange problem that began occurring in last few weeks. Centos 5.4, up to date. I sometimes log in remotely via ssh using "ssh -X" and read mail via mutt. Now and then I want to use balsa instead. This has always worked (for years) though it's kinda slow... but in the last few weeks it has begun failing and spewing errors like this, repeatedly, apparently forever until I enter ^C: $ balsa Bonobo accessibility support initialized GTK Accessibility Module initialized X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication. ** ERROR **: Accessibility app error: exception during registry activation from id: IDL:Bonobo/GeneralError:1.0 aborting... It happens from two different linux boxen (one running Fedora 12, the other running Centos 5.4) so I gather it's something weird on the host rather than the client. BTW, it works fine when I'm logged in to to the host's X11 GUI directly from the machine. I've got no clue, can any of you shed any light on this please? i have seen many times the given error, there was no log about error. Beside this my machine never uses swap i realize that when i have last 500 Mb ram it get this error and after using 5Gb of 8 Gb it decreasing like plane crash :) I've found this form and it is the same with my error : http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=913156 There could be a hardware problem i am not sure , i see this error at least one time in a day. Do you have an advice ? unluckeyly i have found only one people who has the same error with me :) and his machine is also same with mine :D

mapping drives

I am having trouble mounting drives. We have a Windows 2008 (10.1.1.17, MRISRV02) server with folders I what access to. On my Fedora 8 client, in my fstab file, I have: //10.1.1.17/USERS/Jeff /home/mriuser/Desktop/jeff cifs rw,username=cluster,password=mrilab 0 0 and this works just fine. My samba is up to date: [mriuser@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep "samba" samba-common-3.0.33-0.fc8 samba-3.0.33-0.fc8 system-config-samba-1.2.58-1.fc8 samba-client-3.0.33-0.fc8 However, we also have a CentOS 4 64bit "pseudo-server" machine. When I try to map the folders on this CentOS machine using an fstab entry like this: //10.1.1.17/USERS/Jeff /mnt/Jeff cifs rw,username=cluster,password=mrilab 0 0 It maps the USERS folder to /mnt/Jeff. I can cd into Users and then cd into Jeff, but I want to be able to go straight into Jeff and not have access to the rest of the user folders. I just upgraded my samba from 3.0.25 to 3.0.33 and have not restarted. [root@cluster mnt]# rpm -qa | grep "samba" samba-client-3.0.33-0.18.el4_8.1 samba-common-3.0.33-0.18.el4_8.1 samba-common-3.0.33-0.18.el4_8.1 Can anyone please help me out? Thank you!! Jeff

iSCSI / GFS shared web server file system

We currently have a MD3000i with an iSCSI LUN shared out to our apache web server. We are going to add another apache web server into the mix using LVS to load balance, however, I am curious how well iSCSI handles file locking and data integrity. I have the iSCSI partition formatted as ext3. Is my setup totally flawed and will ext3 not allow for data integrity with multiple apache hosts reading/writing to the shared storage? Am I required to also setup GFS across my apache hosts or does iSCSI somehow manage this? Thanks for helping clear this up, James

Transparent proxy with LVS

I've managed to configure a LVS Cluster to act as a transparent proxy squid farm, with a virtual server as load balancer, and three real servers. Because redirecting packets going to port 80 to port 3128 of squid in the load balancer doesn't works, the solution has a mix of ip route and iptables. In the real servers there's a rule in the prerouting chain to redirect those packets to port 3128 I'm using pulse service to start lvs, and would like to add the ipvsadm rules to the /etc/sysconfig/ha/lvs.cf, so they are issued by pulse at startup. I can't figure out how to do it. When I try to start pulse, it fails because i left the address field empty. But this service is not tied to any address, I just want the fwmark match to forward the packets to the real servers. I also have dns in this lvs cluster. Hi Did anyone managed to configure RHEL 6 beta to authenticate using NIS? During the installation the option to use NIS as authentication method is disable. NFS mount problem

Hi,guys: I am trying to connect to a NFS-filesystem on a CentOS 5.3 i386 guest system. The host system is CentOS 5.4 x86_64. I set up the NFS server correctly and rpcinfo is also ok inside the guest system show. The problem is, I can't connect to, or see the open port from the outside. I use the Host-Only network setup with VirtualBox 3.1.0, the ip address in the guest system is 192.168.56.101 . and the host system ip address is 192.168.7.67 When I mount the directory from the guest system via NFS, the result is the following : "mount : 192.168.56.101:/xx failed , reason given by server:Permission denied" I hope one of you can give me a hint in which direction I should continue my efforts. Help with NFSV4 server

Hi Everyone, I have been trying to setup an NFS v4 File Server but have come across an odd issue. Mounting the /nfs4exports/share appears to be successful and the information displayed about partition size and free space seem correct but if I try to do anything inside the mounted directory the client will just hang. Does anyone have any idea what I am missing?? Well, we wanted to put an install on a USB key. Neither I nor the other admin was amused by the singing and dancing that the wiki offers - and just *why* is it that syslinux is broken? At any rate, I did some googling, and found <http://www.pendrivelinux.com/>, and I ran this installer. Ok, it has some bugs: a) I had several .isos, and it *insisted* on grabbing the first one, alphabetically, no matter that I put in the full name. It also takes for-bloody-ever - 4.5 *hours* for the 4G DVD. However, it finished, I stuck it into a laptop, told it to boot from the USB, and there was the begin install screen. *shrug* Looks good to me. I just do not understand why it's such a song and dance, rather than, say, syslinux /dev/sdb1 mount /dev/sdb1 /tmp/mnt mount -o loop CentOS....iso /mnt cp -pr /mnt/ /tmp/mnt mark

OT: Caching synchronous writes

[ Wish there was a generic, active Linux "storage" mailing list out there -- something other than the kernel lists I mean ] To frame the discussion, we use VMware ESX (vSphere) quite a bit with NFS datastores. Often times with NetApp, but lately, more often with Solaris 10 + ZFS + SSD's for ZIL (intent log or write cache). The ZIL lets us use synchronous writes (safer) without the normal delay. Were we to try and get the same level of performance with Linux, we'd need to use async mode for our NFS shares -- and we'd lose some reliability. However, given the latest rumblings and ruminations about Oracle potentially no longer selling entitlements for Solaris 10 on non-Sun hardware -- and then turning around and no longer allowing you to run Solaris 10 "freely", we're left with either OpenSolaris or looking at Linux again (we run Solaris 10 on Silicon Mechanics hardware). My question is, what are the various options for getting NFS in "sync" mode to run fast on Linux? Obviously we can buy a really nice disk controller with lots of cache, but I'm thinking more at the filesystem, volume manager or block driver layer. Is there a way to shunt write requests to a quicker medium like an SLC-based SSD (or NVRAM)? I don't see a way to do this with LVM, ext3/ext4 or even xfs... maybe btrfs will have some options along this line down the road, but that's tomorrow and not today. So is a beefy disk controller our best option? Even using our 3Ware 9650's w/ BBU so we can enable write-back doesn't seem to give us as good of write performance via NFS as ZFS+ZIL-on-SSD does... Problem shuting down server.

Have Centos 5.3 installed in a HP ML110 server. After cloning disk using Clonezilla, if I issue a shutdown -h now, or any other command to shut down the server (i.e. init 0 or poweroff), instead of shutting down the server reboots. Can no longer print

My server has CentOS 5.4. I had hplip-2.7.12 installed and running, as earlier versions didn't work with my printers, and was able to print to a networked printer. As far as I'm aware, that's the version that was still running last time I printed. Recently I decided to add a local USB printer, and at that point discovered that I can no longer print. I've no idea how long this has been so. Rightly or wrongly, I decided that something must have seriously upset hplip, so I removed it and re-installed it. Unfortunately it hasn't cured anything. I have the correct ppd files for both printers, and CUPS lists them. If I step through the CUPS Modify Printer pages everything looks correct, but when I try to send a test page I see "usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed". Running 'hp-check -t' tells me that libcrypto is a required dependency and I don't have it. 'rpm --redhatprovides libcrypto' says that no package provides it, and no package of that name is listed. Where can I get it? Similarly, ppdev and ReportLab are essential but missing. I have printed from this server in the past, but I can't get it sorted this time. I can't even find any uninstall file for hplip, and it doesn't appear in the rpm database. Is there any way I can get this working again? Thanks Anne

Information: 5.4 kernel (2.6.18-164.el5). I have a vmcore (from kdump), if the developers are interested, let me know a place to upload the vmcore file. I used the crash command to do a backtrace. I manage to get machines with later 5.4 and 5.5 to panic the same way. Broadcom or Intel NICs panic the same way. This is an NFS client where the NFS server is restarting several times; NFSv3, mount it with defaults,noatime. The client was busy writing things on NFS-mounted space while the NFS servers was restarting several times. So far, if I mount it with udp option, I've not managed to panic the machines. The bad news is that NFSv4 is strictly TCP, if I were to go down that route. >From the backtrace, it seems the crash is TCP-related. I'll be trying couple Linux TCP settings changes. It's a possibility that the issues are with TCP in general (not NFS). scripting CPAN installs

Hey folks, Maybe there is a Perl/CPAN list that is a better place to ask this? If so, maybe someone can point me to it. Anyway, I want to be able to script the installation of a bunch of CPAN modules, and the first basic problem I am coming up against is that the "cpan" command seems to always return 0 regardless of whether or not the install completed. Google does not bring up a whole lot of help for me here, but I have to think this problem has already been solved. CentOS, RHEL, all versions. Suppose I am upgrading a package foo-1.0 to foo-2.0 (assume foo is not relocatable), and both packages have %preun sections in their .spec files. It appears that foo-1.0's %preun is run after foo-2.0 has been installed. So what happens if foo-1.0 needs to run a binary that was provided as part of foo-1.0 during its %preun stage, and a binary of the same name is provided with foo-2.0? The installed binary is now foo-2.0's, right? So how to run foo-1.0's binaries during its %preun stage? Is the old binary available under a different name before it gets erased? -steve

Hi All; I have a laptop running the "workstation" version of Linux from RedHat. I've enabled the EPEL and rpmfusion repos plus I'm subscribed to the following channels: * Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop (v. 5 for 64-bit x86_64) * Red Hat Network Tools for RHEL Client (v.5 64-bit x86_64) * RHEL Desktop Supplementary (v. 5 for 64-bit x86_64) * RHEL Desktop Workstation FasTrack (v. 5 for 64-bit x86_64) * RHEL Desktop Workstation (v. 5 for 64-bit x86_64) * RHEL Desktop FasTrack (v. 5 for 64-bit x86_64) I have openioffice version 3.1.1 I also have 2 employees running fully patched 5.4 CentOS. They also have the EPEL and rpmfusion repos enabled as well as the centos plus repo. They however have openoffice version 2.3.0 I *thought* that CentOS was basically the equivelant of RHEL. did we do something wrong? or is RHEL (at least in the case of openoffice) shipping a newer release than CentOS? setting up 3 network cards

I am attempting to put 3 network cards in one box, running centos 64 5.4 network cards are forcedeth (motherboard), e1000e and r8169. I have ifcfg-eth0, ifcfg-eth1 and ifcfg-eth2 all configured up. All looks fine. eth0 is my internal network (forcedeth) eth1 is Cable modem eth2 is T1 data Once I connect the three networks and try to ping something all I can ping is internal network machines. Cant ping anything on eth1 or eth2. the route -n looks fine. the correct IP listest on left points to the correct ethX on the right. the default route is using eth2 at the moment. Is there something "special" about setting up 3 network cards that may help? What should I look into? Thanks, Jerry

I solemnly puke upon people who break things and call it progress. Get ye to Redmond. I upgraded Centos3.8 to Centos5.4; smbmount is gone. Mounting a WinXP share requires a new instantiation of the old command smbmount \\\\hostname\\path\\to\\share /local/mount/point -o ip=123.12.34.234,username=hostname\\my_userid,password=whatever which should now be mount -t cifs <somebody please fill in the blanks here> Does the windows side have to change? This is more a CentOS issue, I think (hope) than selinux. I've got some systems in permissive mode - good thing, or they'd be dead. they keep spewing execmem errors with java, among other things. This *seems* like something that should be covered. I looked at the policy (selinux-policy-targeted, and it's 2.4.6. Googling around for the error, trying to find what's hopefully a boolean, or a role/etc solution, I saw an FC package with a 3.somethingorother release. Now, I don't know if that related to fedora, or if that relates to an selinux release. Does anyone know? Are we, with CentOS, that far behind with something like this, which isn't even a port, but a policy? mark, tired of crap in my logs
