Building an "instant on" X terminal

I got my hands on a HP t5720. This was designed as a thin-client workstation (originally Windows XPembedded, talking to a Windows terminal server). It's not very powerful, with an AMD Geode NX 1500 (1.0 GHz), 256Mb RAM (16MB used for video) and a 512Mb flash "hard disk". I plugged in a USB DVD drive and was able to boot "linux rescue" from a C5.4 32bit disk, and it basically looks like pretty generic PC hardware. So I thought this would be a great device to build as an "instant on" type device. Well, as close to instant-on as possible :-) This probably means a standard C5 build is not suitable (too many processes running; would take a while to start up). So an "X terminal", maybe. I look at the LTSP code base, but this looks like it wants to run as it's own OS; I already have a C5 server in my house, I don't want to build another one (not even as a virtual image). Acting as an X terminal, I'd guess the 256Mb RAM should be sufficient; it won't be processing much beyond the display locally (although I might want to enable ssh and add a locally connected printer). The root disk could be local (512Mb flash) or by NFS. What do people recommend for building this? What would have the quickest power-on-to-ready time? -- rgds Stephen

memory leak observed with valgrind on CentOS release 5.4 (Final)

Hi All, Not sure exactly a memory leak or not. I was porting my nagios from Redhat 7.3 to CentOS 5.4 and I observed the memory usage was gradually increasing on the new centos box. When I ran all my perl plugins with Valgrind -3.2.1, all the plugins complained about a memory leak. Not sure if it's a leak or if its fault with valgrind way of evaluating things. I have attached valgrind output when i ran a simple hello-world.pl on my centos box. I shall greatly appreciate if anyone have faced similar behaviour. Thanks, Jai Prakash

All, I've got a machine running CentOS 5.3 and this machine has got 2 - built-in 1 Gig NICs and a expansion card with 4 - 100 Meg NICs. For whatever reason at install time, it made the expansion card eth0 through eth3 and the internal ports eth4 and eth5. And by default the 'machine' is known on the network by the eth0 NIC, so my throughput is limited to 100 Mb. How can I force the internal NICs to be eth0 and eth1? Thanks, Gene Poole

So now you pick one ip address the router assigns from it's dhcp address block and create a static ip configuration for your eth0 nic, If the routers dhcp address block is 192.168.2.2 - 192.168.2.100 pick 192.168.2.10 for the ip. Now eth0 needs a default gateway which is your routers address maybe like 192.168.2.1. Now eth0 needs a primary and secondary DNS entry. If the isp only has one then use one else you can use the default gateway address of the router but not recomended because you are having problems so I think you need the real dns. If you log into the router you will see or find the dns entries you need and the dhcp block that is assigned. John

Power consumption monitoring

Hi, I have quite a few low-end development/test servers running continuously and I would like to better manage their power consumption. I have found interesting information on how to perform CPU scaling (e.g. [1] or [2]). But I cannot find if there is a way to (software) monitor power consumption on CentOS (or other such data like CPU temperature, fan speed etc.). What I read so far is that support is quite limited in this kernel (e.g. PowerTop not providing useful information). Before I start tuning I would like to be able to measure whether my changes are having any impact at all. Hi, The language lab from the local university has contacted me. They'd like to have a low-cost file server for storing all their language video files. They have a mix of Windows, Mac OS X and even Linux clients, roughly 50 machines. The files are quite big, and they calculated a total amount of 2 To of storage. I'm not very proficient with hardware, meaning either I'm dealing with remote servers in some datacenter, or otherwise I install CentOS desktops on any hardware people throw at me. Since the aim is lowcost, would it be wrong to install that fileserver on a no-name desktop PC with a 64bit processor and enough RAM, and then simply put 2 x 2 To hard disks in it, either with a mirroring RAID (can never remember which does what in 0, 1 and 5) or some rsync script regularly copying over the first disk to the second? Getting Domainkeys, dkim, and SMTP-AUTH/TLS to play nicely together in sendmail

A while back I struggled to get Domainkeys and DKIM to work properly on my little home server. While I'm sure they weren't necessary in a strict sense, it not only enabled me to learn about the technology but allowed for more of a verification of the email coming from my server. And so this week I figured: "Hey, this has been working without a problem for a while; it must be time to screw with something else." Hence my effort to enable SMTP submissions over port 587. At the very least, with some ISPs blocking traffic to port 25, this seemed to be a good idea (as well as providing a better method for sending email using my server from outside my home LAN). I've read a number of write-ups of SMTP AUTH, including the information at sendmail.org. I've run into a snag, however, with the .pem certificate that is used for the DK stuff. The conventional wisdom seems to be to run domainkeys/dkim as a user other than root, and a .pem certificate is required. Therefore, to get this to run properly, the permissions on the certificate need to me 600 or 400, owned by this user. All well and good so far, except that STARTTLS doesn't like this: STARTTLS=server: file /var/db/domainkeys/mail.key.pem unsafe: permission denied When I telnet to the server, port 587, and issue an EHLO, I see neither AUTH nor TLS in the response. The sendmail.mc file contains the line: define(`localCERT',`/ver/db/domainkeys/mail.key.pem')dnl So if there's a different line I can add to indicate to TLS/AUTH that it should use a different cert (or, rather, the same one copied to a different location with different permissions...) I don't know it. Anyone ever run into this before? -Don Levey

DRBD,GFS2 and GNBD without all clustered cman stuff

Hi all, Where i want to arrive: 1) having two storage server replicating partition with DRBD 2) exporting via GNBD from the primary server the drbd with GFS2 3) inporting the GNBD on some nodes and mount it with GFS2 Assuming no logical error are done in the last points logic this is the situation: Server 1: LogVol09, DRDB configured as /dev/drbd0 replicated to Server 2. DRBD seems to work perfect as cat /proc/drbd Server 2: LogVol09, Secondary for /dev/drbd, cat /proc/drbd is ok What i thought to do was to export via GNBD the /dev/drbd0 to import it on a couple of nodes. Using GFS2 as FS for concurrent usage. I got to format the GFS2 FS on the Server 1 drbd0 device. But was unable to mount it because gfs_controld wasn't accepting connections, i discovered that cman manage gfs_controld. In any case i started it manually and discover that it try to use ccsd daemon which i have not installed. Ok, i do not need to mount it locally so i started configuring GNBD, started manualli the server end stated the export command...again the cman/ccsd problem: gnbd_clusterd: ERROR cannot join cman Now, what i'm asking: am i forced to use all the cluster stuff cman, ccsd...fence...with this configuration? I would like only to use the tools i need: DRDB, GNBD and GFS2 without cluster facilities. Thanks Raffaele

ClamAV "clamscan" command using huge amount of RAM

We have a perl cgi script that accepts uploaded files and runs clamscan on them. While observing the system performance I noticed that each clamscan process consumes up to 250MB of RAM. Is this normal for ClamAV? This seems like an enormous amount of RAM, for simply scanning one file for viruses.

Disappearing DNS entry

CentOS 4.8, BIND 9.2.4, DHCP 3.0.1 Hi All: I have a rather perplexing problem where the DNS entry in BIND for one of my network printers sporadically "disappears" from our zone file (but not the reverse zone file). We have four Lexmark printers connected locally over our internal LAN using static IP addresses. We have 3 T640n printers and a T642n printer and it is only the T642n printer that this is happening to. I thought I had it licked when I discovered that both DDNS and mDNS were enabled on this printer but not the others, however disabling those has had no effect. We do use DHCP for the bulk of our Windows workstations and DHCP is configured to update the DNS server and this appears to work fine (once I disabled all the "Register this connection's address in DNS" options on the workstations). I have found one suspicious entry in /var/log/messages: Apr 12 17:34:14 fisds0 named[5210]: client 192.168.2.7#10242: updating zone 'forsoft.com/IN': deleting an RR This would seem to indicate that the printer itself has issued the request to the DNS server but for the life of me I cannot see what might be doing it. Before I'd try to defragment my whole filesystem (see attached mail for whole story) I figured "Let's try it on some file". So I did > xfs_bmap /raid/Temp/someDiskimage.iso [output shows 101 extents and 1 hole] Then I defragmented the file > xfs_fsr /raid/Temp/someDiskimage.iso extents before:101 after:3 DONE > xfs_bmap /raid/Temp/someDiskimage.iso [output shows 3 extents and 1 hole] and now comes the bummer: i wanted to check the fragmentation of the whole filesystem (just for checking): > xfs_db -r /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol04 xfs_db: unexpected XFS SB magic number 0x00000000 xfs_db: read failed: Invalid argument xfs_db: data size check failed cache_node_purge: refcount was 1, not zero (node=0x2a25c20) xfs_db: cannot read root inode (22) THAT output was definitly not there when I did this the last time and therefor the new fragmentation does not make me happy either xfs_db> frag actual 0, ideal 0, fragmentation factor 0.00% The file-system is still mounted and working and I don't dare to do anything about it (am in a mild state of panic) because I think it might not come back if I do. Hi all, My 5.3 DVD is ruined and the 5.4 installer won't run on my box w/o errors (uts not the disk, something to do with the installer itself). I usually just install 5.3 and then yum it to 5.4. Does any one know were I can find a 5.3x64 iso file? - aurf

Just finished building a new server for inhouse use. 12.8TB Needed a nfs and samba server which could store 10TB and be reliable. Also wanted to replace out DHCP server and our internal DNS server. So needed to run dnsmasq plus ntp for time serving. This machine replace 3 older units. We used a Supermicro 3U case with 15 sata shuttles and 2N+1 760 Watt PS. On ebay for 300.00 Used a Supermicro H8DME-2 MB cause I had one sitting around. If I was going to buy one it would have been a Tyan S2932G2NR-SI for reliability (we have sold a bunch of these and they always work) Installed dual AMD 2382's and 16 GB DDR2-800 RECC plus 4 wire HSF's. Went to the 3ware online store and purchased a 9550SXU-16ML with the breakout cables for 340.00 Yes, I know its PCI-X. It was inexpensive and it runs almost as fast as the 9650 series at twice the price. Installed 15 pcs of the WD1001FALS disks. Very reliable and low cost even though they are desktop drives. Used these since we always have 3 on the shelf as spares and WD turns a bad one around in about 5 days. We have installed over 200 of these drives in raid arrays and have had 2 fail in the last 6 months. BTW, Initializing took <8 hours not days. Set it up as a Raid 5 array with one hot spare and autorebuild. Have tested it with both Centos 5.4 x86_64 and OpenSUSE 11.1 x86_64. Also installed an LSI SCSI card and a Sony AIT-5 Tape drive with Bacula for data backup and recovery. Again, all worked fine and the machine was able to do backups and keep a GigE connection saturated. Using an in house piece of code called disktest we are seeing 268 MB / sec on writes and 347 MB / sec on reads using 32 GB test files, 131K buffer sizes and single threading. If you would like to see a system that is almost identical, have a look at Coraid.com. They use a dual xeon and a BSD custom kernel. Hope this config helps...... Cluster Suite Question

A while back I posted a question in the Linux-Cluster list and never got a reply. I am hoping maybe someone here has any insight? I have a service that I have changed the default from restart to relocate. Now I need to add one more script resource to it, but this script resource is not essential, and if it tanks, a restart will certainly be sufficient so I assume I have to create another service so I can tune the Restart Policy Extensions for it, whereas the Recovery Policy for the original remains as Relocate. I have looked all through the wiki and net, but I can't see how to group or tie services together so they always follow each other around? These two services can't be on distinct nodes, anyone have any ideas? Thanks, jlc

CentOS-3, is this what I need?

Hi, I am new to linux and so far I have only used ubuntu. I have developed a python application which I would like package and distribute. The problem with packaging tools such as pyinstaller and cx_freeze is that you have to compile the bootloader first. Now If I compile the loader on karmic 9.10, the binary would suffer from compatibility issue. In other words I won't be able to execute the app on a lower version such as ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS. The solution is to use as much as old libc as you can to compile the bootloader. It seems CentOS-3 is based on glibc 2.3, which is pretty old and if I compile and do other stuff of on CentOS-3, it'll do the job and hopefully covers almost all the end user base that I am expecting will use the app. It may possible that I might face some issues with my requirements mentioned below but I have no practical idea about them. As I mentioned before that I am new to linux and I always prefer to use VirtualBox, when ever I try any new distribution. In short these are my requirements and I would like to know whether CentOS-3 is the right choice for me or not? 1. Use VirtualBox. XP Host & CentOS-3 guest. 2. python 2.6.4 3. wxPython 2.8.10.1 from wxWidgets repository 4. libcairo 1.8.8 5. pycairo 1.8.6 6. couple of other python modules. Are these packages available or if not can be downloaded from other repositories? I am also concerned about my requirements that whether they themselves will suffer from binary dependency issue or not because I of using CentOS-3. Some one also suggested that you should also compile your requirements(python, wxpython etc.) along with the bootloader and this would make your package and underlying libraries backward compatible and lesser chance of any failure. Hi, I wanted to set up Clonezilla Tools on my client machine via PXE Boot. How do I do it. I got information from the web, but after making changes in the dhcpd.conf file, the dhcpd fails to start. In the BIOS after enabling the PXE Boot, iam not able to see an Clonezilla menu options that i have placed in /pxelinux.cfg file. Amazon S3FS Automounter of sorts

Hi, I¹ve just started using Amazon S3 for storage and have used s3fs to mount the buckets on the file system. 1. I was wondering if anyone has a better method even though this meets my current needs. 2. if there is an automounter that could be tweaked to work with s3fs. The entries in my fstab are rather different to the normal disk based ones, s3fs#BUCKETNAME /mnt/s3/BUCKETNAME fuse allow_other,default_acl=public-read,noauto 0 0 ,so I wasn¹t sure if it is possible. My reasoning to want an automounter is I¹m not sure on the amount of extra calls made to the S3, so would prefer it not be connected if its not needed. ACER T230H touchscreen problem!

Hi, I am completely new to CentOS(a week), but work on linux almost 2 years. This touchscreen ACER T230H is probably produced for Windows7, but works also with Windows XP. On CentOS works just screen, but not touch. I have no idea how to make it work. Should I look for driver? Please give me some advice!?! When I load "Dos Bootdisk", I get an error: Loading memdisk.... Could not find ramdisk image:images/622c.img boot : So, it's reading the configuration, but not loading the CentOS boot image. /var/log/messages doesn't give my any errors on this (yes I know how to read /var/log/messages) Does anyone know how to get pxeboot to output debug messages to syslog? OR,what am I doing wrong? The tutorials I got on the net are rather vague on this. Hi All, I have three server. server0 is centralized logging server, server1 and server2 are remote client servers. How can I properly configure the syslog in server0 to log the two servers in different separated files/directories. Example, server1 will be logged at /var/log/syslog/server1.log of server0 and /var/log/syslog/server2.log for server2 as well. Is there need of little tweaking for syslog.conf ? Thanks. James

Installing a .ko file?

I have the drivers from 3Ware and they seem to be a .ko file (which I presume is like a .kext on OSX) How do I install these? Due to DNS server did NOT up quickly, CENTOS servers start up and can NOT find time server. For CENTOS 5.X servers, it did quickly resync to time server after 30 minutes. For CENTOS 4.X servers, it have been 3 days still NOT sync to time server. I know I can run "service ntpd restart" to force server sync to time server, but I like to know how long it take for CENTOS 4.X automatic resync to time server. Thanks.

Are the libraries Fedora Core 9 uses substantially different than those CentOS 5.4 uses? If Dropbox had an SRPM available, I would Download that and Rebuild, but I'm sure it is Proprietary and they won't release an SRPM to me. TIA! 'p' in boot selector & going into single-user

On boot, when I hit the F12 key to bring up the boot menu, the screen displays the various kernels and other boot options. In the text below this menu it says I can hit 'p' to bring up a menu with other options. I've done this with the last two boot-ups and no other menu or options appear. Is something missing? (I also tried Alt-p, Shift-p, Ctrl-p and a few other keys and there's no change onscreen.) I'd like to know also how to select single user mode, but haven't found a way to do that. Thanks much.

mysterious weekly shutdown

I have a Centos 5.4 machine that has, for the past two weeks, apparently been shut off over the weekend. It's just sitting there turned off on Monday morning and when someone hits the power switch it comes right back on and everything works again. Performance problems with XFS on Centos 5.4

Hi! During the last weeks I experienced some performance problems with a large file-system on XFS basis. Sometimes for instance ls is painfully. Immidiatly afterwards ls on the same directory is immidiate. I used strace on this ls and found that during the first ls the lstat-calls need approx 0.02s each while during the second ls the are two orders of magnitude faster. Googling around I stumbled upon some messages similar like this http://www.opensubscriber.com/message/linux-xfs@oss.sgi.com/1355060.html which have in common a) they're from around 2006 b) they suggest to increase a mount-option ihashsize. This mount option is listed as deprecated in the current kernel-doc So my question: does anyone have experience with that kind of performance problem? Do you think it is a XFS problem or are there some other tuning parameters in the kernel that could be modified for instance via /proc? The reason why I'm asking here is that it is a production file-system so I would be very unpopular if I experiment too much (a couple of reboots is OK ;) ) Bernhard PS: the situation got worse during the last weeks when the file-system increased in size, so the option that some kind of buffer now is too small and I'm experiencing some kind of thrashing seems very likely to me

I am having a problem with 5.4 that I did not have with 4.5. The problem happens only sometimes but in specific instances. Basically a summary of the problem is that certain network transactions timeout. The specfic instances are with wget, rpm, http. The problem usually, but not always, occurs with pptp stuff. (NOT running pptp but getting pptp stuff). For instance, the following command, which finishes in seconds on non-5.4 OS's: wget http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/yum/stable/rhel4/pptp-release-current.noa… downloads about 20% then gets stuck. About 5 minutes later it downloads another 20% and then gets stuck, etc. The same thing with rpm: rpm -ivh http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/yum/stable/rhel4/pptp-release-current.noa… waits about 3 minutes and then gives an error. I think it does the same thing as the wget but wget will keep trying, while rpm gives up. The error from rpm: Retrieving http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/yum/stable/rhel4/pptp-release-current.noa… ..five minutes later: error: /var/tmp/rpm-xfer.DYY9e0: headerRead failed: hdr blob(7456): BAD, read returned 3568 error: /var/tmp/rpm-xfer.DYY9e0 cannot be installed I can wget the above as I mentioned before and install it that way. Before I do it, yum works fine. Afterwards, yum exhibits the same behavior of timing out (because it is using the pptp repository). Also visiting the pptp web site from Firefox times out on certain pages. I originally thought it was some problem with the pptp site, but I notice that log into hotmail.com does the same thin (fine on other operating systems). A view with Wireshark on the wget (pptp) shows the my machine receiving a reassembled TCPPDU from 216.34.181.96 (Sourceforge), sending an ack, receiving a reassembled PDU, sending an ack, receiving, sending followed by the 5 minutes or whatever of nothing. Then sourceforge sends an RST and a SYN and the process is repeated. Here is what I tried. When I put the machine directly on an AT&T IP connection (12.147.X.Y) everything worked fine. Same with Comcast on a direct link. The times I am having problems is when our router is hooked up to a Comcast IP (70.88.X.Y) and assigns 192.168.5.X addresses to our machines. So when I was doing the above from 192.168.5.27 going through the router through Comcast is when I had the problem. So it is probably something with the router, but it is hard to figure out since CentOS 4.5 and Fedora do not exhibit this behavior, nor does 5.4 on most sites (mail.yahoo.com for instance). I did verify, at least from what I could, that ICMP type 3 and 4 are not being blocked. If they were, the same problem would happen on other op systems. And I was able to ping, albeit just locally, but we looked at the router settings and ping was not blocked. Anyone else have this problem / know what might be wrong?

Hi All, My one server recently started acting very weird. At fist I couldn't import any images with cobbler as rsync crashes the whole time. I was told to ask on the cobbler list (maybe it's not supported here?) but I left it at that (subscribed to far too many lists already). Yesteday I wanted to copy some stuff from a USB disk to the server (using rsync to update the files which have changed, or new files) but it seems like rsync hangs without any errors. Now, when I tried to update CentOS I get the same "error" in that yum hangs. At the same time I can open a new SSH session and do whatevery I like. But it seems that running a command which takes time to complete hangs. NAT/DHCP/DNS/etc Settings from a Windows 2003 Server

Hello all. I'm in the process of making a small server farm based mostly on Windows Server 2003. For simplicity's sake, the only non-2003 server will be a CentOS 5.4 server running only vsftpd, httpd, and mysqld. My plan is to have this server in a 2003 Server's network receiving a DHCP address from the Domain Controller. Currently, I have two other (non-DC) servers running with no issues on the domain. NAT works as it should, and internet access is just fine. The CentOS box on the same network will not receive an IP address (only through static configuration, the non-DC 2003 boxes have no problem receiving an IP and DNS settings with auto settings) or get online. Even when defining a static IP on the CentOS box, there is no Internet access, unlike to the other clients. My question is, what could be restricting the DHCP and DNS information to the CentOS host, and why can't I access the internet/NAT forward a web server? To summarize, I have four machines involved, all located on the same network: - Machine 1 - Windows Server 2003 Enterprise - Domain Controller, DHCP server, DNS server, NAT server. - Machine 2 - Windows Server 2003 Enterprise - Domain member, Exchange server. - Receives DHCP and DNS information with automatic network settings. - Has internet access through NAT. - NAT forwards ports to this host. - Machine 3 - Windows Server 2003 Enterprise - Domain member, Sharepoint Server. - Receives DHCP and DNS information with automatic network settings. - Has internet access through NAT. - NAT forwards ports to this host. - *Machine 4* - CentOS 5.4 - On same network as other clients, hosts web server. - Does *NOT *receive DHCP address or DNS information. - Has *no *internet access - NAT does *NOT *forward correctly. I am looking for a solution to get the CentOS server on the network like the other clients. Any assistance on this problem would be greatly appreciated. David
