vsftpd saving uploads twice

I have configured my vsftpd instances to use virtual users and map them to a system user. So all uploads should be written with owner and group of this system user (let's call it ftpsystemuser). But in the the last weeks/months it appears that uploads are written twice, on instance as it should (owner and group of the system user used to map the virtual user that did the upload), and the other instance as root. Lik this: > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 19968 16. Mär 11:24 Termine > Leistungspr%FCfungen.doc > -rw-r--r-- 1 ftpsystemuser ftpsystemuser 19968 16. Mär 11:24 Termine > Leistungspr?fungen.doc As you can see both instance use different syntax for the file name in case of German umlauts. In vsftpds log only the correct file is mentioned. Can anybody tell me what is happening here? Is this something I can get rid off using certain configuration? Is it a security problem? Any hint or help is appreciated. Dirk

Question about dhcpd.leases

Hi, I'm running a DHCP server on my local network. I've noticed something that puzzles me. Leases are written to /var/lib/dhcpd/dhcpd.leases, but only - so it seems to me - if the address is not fixed in any way in dhcpd.conf. Here's a few stanzas of my dhcpd.conf : host babasse { hardware ethernet 00:0d:61:ae:6b:8f; fixed-address 192.168.1.1; option host-name "babasse"; } host bernadette { hardware ethernet 00:0d:61:a6:e7:1e; fixed-address 192.168.1.2; option host-name "bernadette"; } host raymonde { hardware ethernet 00:20:ed:b8:e8:ec; fixed-address 192.168.1.3; option host-name "raymonde"; } host lifebook { hardware ethernet 00:0b:5d:46:f2:10; fixed-address 192.168.1.5; option host-name "lifebook"; } How comes these machines never appear in dhcpd.leases ? I have used lokkit to setup iptables ( I have a big script that does this) basically just ports I want with "--port=https:tcp" etc... I wish to allow igmp and add igmp to the lokkit command line? How do I do that? I can add this to /etc/sysconfig/iptables: iptables -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -i eth1 -j ACCEPT iptables -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -i eth1 -p igmp -j ACCEPT iptables-save > /etc/sysconfig/iptables and that works - but I wish my script and the lokkit command to do. Hi Les, >White space could be a tab. '[[:space:]]CP_' should work, but why not use sed >and be done with it. ah, worked!. I was thinking way to much into this. Anyone know how to submit jobs to at or anything else that allows jobs submitted to a queue to be executed consecutively? I have a series of servers that submits a job via an ssh background job but I can only have one execute at any given time. Possibly some clever bash work? Thanks! jlc

openfiler (was: using CentOS as an iSCSI server?)

We want to move to virtualization, but the direct-attached storage is a bit of an issue because with VMWare ESXi you cannot do some of the fancy stuff like "VMove" (moving a live running server from one host to another). So of course Openfiler comes to mine. However, most of this hardware has pretty significant CPU and RAM horsepower, so just running it as openfiler would be quite wasteful. What I se some people doing is - install ESXi (4.0) onto the bare metal - install openfiler as a virtual machine - give open filer all the disk - serve the disk out to other VMs via openfiler This may seem redundant vs just doing it without openfiler, but as mentioned a lot of the fancy features you only get with virtualized disk. Hi, For the last few years, I've been using exclusively Linux on servers and desktops, so I don't know anything about Microsoft products. When setting up a 100% GNU/Linux LAN, I use a local DHCP and DNS caching server, and then all the clients are configured to use DHCP. Hostnames are all handled by the server. This works very well and never causes any headaches. Now a local town hall has asked me to join their two networks (so they can exchange files via Samba), one using Windows XP on desktops, and the other running CentOS desktops. I plan to handle hostnames, IP addresses etc. as usual, by one central DHCP/DNS caching server. Right now I'm testing this on my "sandbox" network (three machines using Ghost images from various systems). I can configure a Windows XP desktop to get network configuration from the DHCP server OK, but 1) where does an XP desktops' hostname appear? 2) how can I handle it from the DHCP server (that is, *if* it's possible)? Resize iscsi partitions?

Hi, I have a c5 machine with a 3ware controller in it that I am using for iscsi targets. The iscsi target is built on lvm. The client then sees it as /dev/sdb1. If I put a gpt partition on it and try to shrink it I loose the partition table. If I expand it gparted complains with the following warning: "Not all of the space available to /dev/sda appears to be used, you can fix the GPT to use all of the space (an extra 70688768 blocks) or continue with the current setting?" The data is still there but as the warning says I can fix the issue. I am wondering if there is a way to be able to both grow and shrink the gpt partitions on iscsi? The machine is not in production yet so at this time I am just experimenting so that when I have live data on it, I can be reasonably sure that I can resize the iscsi partitions without data loss. On CentOS 5.4, Linux 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue Nov 3 16:18:27 EST 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux In man 2 send I find: The send() call may be used only when the socket is in a connected state (so that the intended recipient is known). The only difference between send() and write() is the presence of flags. With zero flags parameter, send() is equivalent to write(). In some complex server software, if the client disconnects: send: delivers errno == ECONNRESET but write: crashes the server process. So it is not really equivalent. Any thoughts on this? I am attempting to create a simple line chart graphing three columns from a soffice-calc spreadsheet. I expect it to take the leftmost column as the X-Axis, plotting the others on the Y-Axis, but it always creates an X-Axis of the row number in the columns, and the first column amongst the data. I have tried this on OpenOffice.org 3.2.0, NeoOffice(R) 3.0.2 Patch 2, iWork Pages, and Excel 12.2.4 in Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac. It does what I expect in iWork Pages and M$-Excel, but not in the various incantations of OpenOffice.org. I OO-calc has gone to a fancy wizard thingy that doesn't seem to have any way to specify details for the X-Axis, and I can't find anything useful in the on-line documentation. Does anybody know how one gets this to work in OpenOffice.org? The Linux tie-in is that I'm getting data from a postgresql database that lives on a Linux box, and none of the fancy commercial products seem to be able to use it in their data sources. On the other hand, I have written a python script that extracts the data from the postgresql database and creates the pretty reports using groff and gplot totally on Linux which is faster in any case for my current problem. Disc Cloning Question

I have a server with a stock install scheme with the exception that /boot and / are on two md raid 1 mirrors over two discs. I need to remove those two large discs and replace them with smaller discs. Given the lvm over md, and big to small scenario, anyone know any automated app that can do this? I don't want to spend the time to resize the ext3 partition, the vg etc and re-mirror manually... Thanks! jlc

vsftpd writing files 2 times - once as root

I have configured my vsftpd with virtual users all of which are mapped to a system user for file system permissions (let's call him 'ftpsystemuser'). That means, if someone uploads files they are writting using owner and group of the system user: > -rw-r--r-- 1 ftpsystemuser ftpsystemuser 19968 16. Mär 11:24 Termine > Leistungspr?fungen.doc Now we have the phenomenon that some files and folders are written twice, one instance as it should be and the other with owner and group 'root' and with html-like file name syntax. For example: > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 19968 16. Mär 11:24 Termine > Leistungspr%FCfungen.doc > -rw-r--r-- 1 ftpsystemuser ftpsystemuser 19968 16. Mär 11:24 Termine > Leistungspr?fungen.doc This looks like a security problem: the process writing these files should not be able to do this as root, should it? And then it is very annoying. Has anyone seen that? Is that something I can configure off somehow? Any hint or help is appreciated, any deeper insight very welcome. Dirk

ssh-agent

Yesterday or Friday, don't remember, I happened to be looking at my processes on my machine, and discovered I had a number of ssh-agents running (all mine), from different days. I killed all but the current day's. Now, I log out every single night. I checked the next day, and sure enough, the one I started the previous day was still running, and I could not only use ssh-add, and it worked. I didn't think of it this morning until just now, but tomorrow I'll log back in, and see if I even need to use ssh-add. If this is the case, I am not happy. This is, to me, a security hole, and *not* what I expected, nor what the man page seems to lead me to believe. Bug? mark

Cron and Cluster

I need an idea on how to accomplish this: I have a cluster that I only want to run cron jobs on when its active. I know the cron script can check for node status, but then I have multiple copies to maintain wheres my existing resources all reference config on the shard fs (httpd/sql etc) so a change on the active node makes that permanent on the next node. Any idea how to do this? Thanks! jlc

compiling FahMON for Centos?

Hi all! Thanks to those who pointed me to wxwidgets packages for centos! SELinux restorecon does not work

Hi All, I have this following issue in SELinux. I did what instruction said but the security context has still never changed. Do I need to create local SELinux module? bogus error message from yum update for gmime and gmime-sharp

When I do "yum update gmime gmime-sharp" I get: ... --> Missing Dependency: gmime = 2.2.10-5.el5.centos is needed by package gmime-sharp-2.2.10-5.el5.centos.i386 (installed) Error: Missing Dependency: gmime = 2.2.10-5.el5.centos is needed by package gmime-sharp-2.2.10-5.el5.centos.i386 (installed) ... But both of these are already installed: # rpm -q gmime gmime-sharp gmime-2.2.10-5.el5.centos gmime-sharp-2.2.10-5.el5.centos So: # package-cleanup --problems Setting up yum Reading local RPM database Processing all local requires No problems found Running the above "yum update ..." again yields the same bogus error messages. I've had problems with these two packages before. Why can't yum understand rpm for them? Problem updating VM

Hi, I am trying to bring one of my CentOS 5 VMs up to date. I have run: yum clean all yum update yum yum clean all yum update python* rpm* yum clean all without any problems or error messages. Now when I try to run yum update, I get the following: [root@tusker ~]# yum update There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: No module named cElementTree Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly. It's possible that the above module doesn't match the current version of Python, which is: 2.4.3 (#1, Sep 3 2009, 15:37:37) [GCC 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-46)] If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to the yum faq at: http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumFaq I then downloaded the python-clementtree package from dags site and tried to install it and get: [root@tusker ~]# rpm -i ./python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm warning: ./python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 6b8d79e6 error: Failed dependencies: python-elementtree conflicts with python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.x86_64 yet when I query the package I get: [root@tusker ~]# rpm -q python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm package python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm is not installed and when I try to remove it I get: [root@tusker ~]# rpm -e ./python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.i386.rpm error: package ./python-celementtree-1.0.5-1.2.el5.rf.i386.rpm is not installed I have tried rebuilding the rpm database with no result. replacement for start-stop-daemon on CentOS

Hi Folks, I'd like to use "start-stop-daemon" on my centos-machine. I know , it's debian-like. But I can't find "startproc" on my machine nor in the repos. What is the CentOS-replacement for "start-stop-daemon"? Thx Timothy P.S. I found a start-stop-daemon.c script - but how to compile it? gcc start-stop-daemon.c ends in much errors.

NFS freeze when transmitting big files

Hi, I have one old spare PC, a PIII with 128 MB RAM, that I use as a spare file server. I have a headless CentOS 5 install on it, and a 2 terabyte external USB harddisk. The machine is in my basement (because it's quite loud), and I'm using what's called "CPL" here (Courant Porteur), which is basically Ethernet over 220V power lines. It's much slower than normally cabled Ethernet, but it works OK. I setup an NFS server on this machine, with the big 2TB storage on the external disk. On the first floor, on my main PC, I setup a consistent mounting of the NFS shares in /etc/fstab, and it works. Now here's the problem. Some of the files are quite big, usually movie files that can make up to 4 GB. More often than not, when I cut/paste such a file from my local harddisk to the server, it's quite slow (understandably, due to the slow CPL connection), but then the operation freezes in the middle, the cursor is unresponsive, even [Ctrl+Alt+Backspace] doesn't work, and I have to do a hard reboot. Now I wonder what this phenomenon can be due to. Some strange bottleneck effect due to either lack of RAM to the server or the slow network or both? Any ideas? Niki
