hello i have copied some sites from another server to cent os but i have faced with that non latin chars in sites seems like -> " ? " firstly i think it is an sql problem or encoding but i see that file manager see file names like : VBULLET�N4 r�tbe and i decide to create a folder with the same non latin char ü şşşüüüiiiğğğıııı it worked so how could i repair this copied fle names end file encodings because it has problems also while reading by php and publishing the same thanks

Hi, I found 2 identical drives lying around and put them into a system. When booting from a Centos 5.x installer, and when being presented with the formatting option (disk druid), it says I have 1 volume of; mamapper/isw_bdihgcgahe_Volume0p2 I can't seem to get rid of it. I have 2 physical disks but disk druid is seeing 1 volume thats the same size as one of the 2 identical drives. I've tried everything from yanking the 2nd drive, installing Centos with 1 drive, then installing the second drive and doing; dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb ... to even installing diff OS's like Ubuntu and Windows which see 2 individual disks where I repartition/reformat the drives. Seems as though I can't truly re write a part of the master boot record or some other area. I'm pretty feeble with this crap so can any one help me get a clue on what to do? These drives may have been in some hard ware raided system of the past, am unsure and no one here knows. This is really driving me crazy!!!!! - aurf

Watching a file using auditd

Hi, I am using auditd to monitor files for changes (read and write actually). I found that when auditd is running, it will correctly report files that are read, but will not report changes to a file that is being monitored. But if I stop auditd and load audit rules using auditctl, it will work as expected. Here's the audit rule: -w /tmp/audit-test -p rw -k __monitored__ What am I missing here? Thanks.

Hi, From what I gather, OpenLDAP on Centos 5.x pulls LDAP changes from central LDAP server to a secondary LDAP server. So in other words, you can have your second LDAP server pull the db based on either; type=refreshOnly which mean the pull interval will happen when ever you specify or; type=refreshAndPersist which mean after a pull, keep the pipe open for any changes made. Now in Ubuntu one can have there primary LDAP push the changes to all the secondaries. Can I somehow enable push in Centos OpenLDAP because pull seems pretty lame in this case. I tried but to no avail. Hope the answer isn't "Son, thats just the way it iz". - aurf

Enlightenment E17 on CentOS 5.x ?

Hi, Anyone knows how to install E17 on CentOS 5 ? Maybe there are packages on some third party repo out there ? I thought about building it from Fedora SRPMS, but before giving this a spin, I thought I'd rather ask first. AFAIK, the CentOS-based Yellow Dog distribution uses E17 as main window manager / desktop environment. I remember having tried out Enlightenment - I think it was in 2007 or so - on Slackware and I've been pretty stunned by how less system resources it consumed while looking impressive at the same time. Could not retrieve mirror list while using yum command

Hi I wanted to download and install the net-snmp package. Usually on my other CentOS boxes i use the following command to do it: yum install net-snmp I was able to successfully install net-snmp on 4 of my CentOS boxes but not on one of them. It reports me the following error message: [root@localhost yum.repos.d]# yum install net-snmp Loaded plugins: fastestmirror Determining fastest mirrors Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=5&arch=i386&repo=os error was [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (110, 'Connection timed out')> Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base Other output that can be some use is : [root@localhost yum.repos.d]# ls CentOS-Base.repo CentOS-Media.repo Can someone please let me know what the issue is ? and how to get it working ? Since 5.5 is now out from Red Hat and most likely our amazing CentOS team has already jumped on that, is there any word on Release 6? IIRC it's already a year out of date (base was supposed to be Fedora 10), so I have to wonder. I didn't see anything jump out at me on the Red Hat site, so - anyone? Thanks. mhr

dear all, i can't count the times that webmin came to my rescue. whenever i face a dead end in doing something through CLI i always turn to webmin.. though at the moment i wanna learn how to do things through cli instead of relying on webmin as i said.. especially "System and Server Status" theres a module that supports such a thing where i can set monitors that checks specific services or directories or... and reports the output.. so i wanna do this through command line.. any help ? i've checked crontab -l and it doesnt list anything that i've set in webmin so where is it and how to do it through cli ? _________________________________________________________________ Your E-mail and More On-the-Go. CUPS and virtual interfaces

I've got a server with multiple virtual interfaces. Now, I only want CUPS to advertise on *one* - eth0, not eth0:1 or eth0:gad.... Looking at the CUPS manual, and cuppsd.conf man page, I see BrowseAllow, but the entries are not clear enough for me to understand what they mean. (Yeah, I know the docs are better than they were - read ESR's rant about it from a few years ago.) Specifically, I *think* I'd like to use BrowseAllow @IF, but I can't figure out if that should be BrowseAllow @IF(eth0) or BrowseAllow @IF(hostname) Also, if it's interface name, and there are multiple virtual interfaces on eth0, and I use the first of the two lines, above, will that *not* also apply to the VIs on eth0? mark

Unable to get software using Yum

Hi I am new to CentOS and been into Linux for about 3 months now. I first started off with fedora and also trying my hands on CentOS now. Basically i used yum to download softwares on the fedora box. I mainly require the snmp agent for my linux boxes so as to test my network management product. On some of the CentOS boxes the following command worked for me : yum install net-snmp it installed the snmp agent for me but on others i am finding it hard to install. C5 XEN domain not startable

Hi, I have a Centos 5 box with dom0 and several domUs and one of them is not runnable. I ran updates several days ago and the update included a kernel update so I used virt-manager to reboot. But it won't book. IBM Touchscreen

Hi, i have some old IBM USB touchscreens, that insist on not working correctly under CentOS. I tried to use the 3m driver and the elousb driver, but none of them work. The touch part works out of the box witohut any drivers, but i can't find a way to calibrate them The y axis is inverted and the X axis is a bit off. Here is the output form lsusb: Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0596:0001 MicroTouch Systems, Inc. Touchscreen We also have some new models from IBM and they work with elousb driver. I rebuilt my xen host with the 64-bit OS and am in the process of recreating the guests, both 32 and 64 bit. I use a kickstart installation with virt-install, and so far none of the installation attempts has completed. Anaconda indicates installation should take about 2-3 minutes, but when it comes to installation of selinux policies, it just sits there, and I have no idea what it's doing. No progress 15 minutes later, and it doesn't make a difference whether I disable or not selinux in the kickstart configuration. What's the best thing to do in this situation? Disable specific LUN on a SCSI bus

Hi all, do you know if there is a way at boot time do disable specific LUN's on a SCSI bus of a particular controller? I'm trying to write an udev rule, but it seems that the system ignores the "vendor" model/name of the controller... For example: I want to disable /dev/sdb; so I gather some information with udevinfo -a -p /sys/block/sdb and I try to use them to write /etc/udev/rules.d/10-custom.rules ID=="?:0:1:0", BUS=="scsi", DRIVER=="sd", SYSFS{model}=="DDYS-T36950N ", SYSFS{vendor}=="IBM ", OPTIONS="ignore_device", OPTIONS+="last_rule" I put the "?" on the ID field because I know that the order of the controller can change (a kernel update could trigger the switch); also I tried with and without the spaces at the end of vendor and model: no change Where am I wrong? i have 2 servers in a datacenter and each of them has 2 virtual machines one is linux the other is windows of wirtual machines. when i want to transfer my ip addresses between theese servers , for ex: let me say main server 1' guest windows : A main server 1' guest CentOs: B main server 2' guest windows : C main server 1' guest CentOs: D when i handle an ip of any computers ip in network from A or C it directly handles, no matter where the ip routed from cisco router :D but when i want to handle any computers ip in network from B or D it never get the ip from other source :D how this could happen :)

Hi, I'm currently configuring Squid and Squidguard for filtering web access in a public computer room. So far, everything works fine. I know how to configure Firefox to use a proxy, but there's no way to protect that configuration, e. g. a more knowledgeable user might circumvent this configuration. Keyboard problems on Centos 5.4

I installed CentOS 5.4on a WMWare Server virtual machine that's running on win7. Everything seems to work fine except I get a shit load of error messages from the console along the lines of when I type on the keyboard: atkbd.c Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x81 on isa0060/serio0). atkbd.c Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0x81 on isa0060/serio0). *atkbd*.*c*: Use '*setkeycodes* e059 <*keycode*>' to make it known. NB: the code's change and there doesn't seem to be any particular codes Is this because i'm running centos on the VM? Any ideas how i go about actually fixing this? I've had Centos dual booted with winxp on this same hardware previously without any problems. Being unfamilar (having not used Centos much) I don't really have any idea where to start to resolve this.

VMware server 2 - Strange behaviour

Hi everyone, I recently install VMware on a server using PAE kernel everything was great until I use vmware server everytime i'm connecting to the vmware server web interface after few seconds, the client loose server connection (server shows a loading page) I can't access to my VM till I log on the server run /etc/init.d/vmware restart I try to connect to the server again but connection still fails I try /etc/init.d/vmware stop /etc/init.d/vmware start then it respond me : Starting VMware services: Virtual machine monitor [FAIL] Virtual machine communication interface [ OK ] VM communication interface socket family: [FAIL] Virtual ethernet [FAIL] Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 [ OK ] I retry /etc/init.d/vmware start VMware Server is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured for the running kernel. To (re-)configure it, invoke the following command: /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl. San boot failure after upgrade to latest

Hello All: Had an issue after upgrading to the latest CentOS kernel from kernel-2.6.18-164.11.1.el5 to kernel-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 on an IBM HS21 blade with SAN boot. Upgrade went fine, but after rebooting the system was unable to find /boot even though it was mounted. The reboot displayed an error with fsck.ext3 that /dev/mapper/mpath0p1 was not found, which was the /boot volume. I reverted to the old kernel and it booted fine. At first I tried rebuilding the initrd to include the multipath modules, but this had no effect. I ended up just re-labeling all the ext3 filesystems and the changing the /boot line in fstab from the /dev/mapper/mpath0p1 device to LABEL=/boot. This resolved the issue. Any idea why the latest kernel did not see the /boot volume when specified as /dev/mapper/mpath0p1?

Two pc's: 1 - router 2 - logger Situation: someone tries to bruteforce into a server, and the logger get's a log about it [e.g.: ssh login failed]. What's the best method to ban that ip [what is bruteforcig a server] what was logged on the logger? I need to ban the ip on the router pc. How can i send the bad ip to the router, to ban it? Just run a cronjob, and e.g.: scp the list of ip's from the logger to the router, then ban the ip from the list on the router pc? Or is there any "offical" method for this? I'm just asking for docs/howtos.. :\ to get started.. Thank you!

This version of aide produces the following message on /var/log/messages "aide: Libgcrypt warning: missing initialization - please fix the application" when executed. Image viewer refuses to print TIF graphics

I'm not sure if it's just the TIFs or if that related at all, since I have had some luck in printing these before, but recently the image viewer (eog - the Eye of GNOME, v 2.16.0.1) has responded to a print command on certain TIFs with nothing. Nothing shows up in the spool queue for the printer, and, although the printer (a Brother 2140 laser printer) heats up, it doesn't print anything at all. Now, this is better than it printing hundreds of pages with indecipherable gobbledygook on them, but I'd really prefer the image itself. Any ideas on what it might be? My "standard" solution is to use either tiff2pdf or Adobe Photoshop Elements (in my virtual WIndows box) to convert them to PDFs, which then print just fine, but that's a real annoyance - tiff2pdf routinely generates enormous PDF files, and it takes a while to bring the XP VM out of hibernation, log in, open APE and run the conversion. Other alternatives welcome.... mhr

VMWare vs. KVM - recommendations?

Okay, I'm being noisy today. I have VMWare Server 1.0.8 installed on my CentOS desktop, and it runs my XP and CentOS guests just fine, though I don't use them much. I'm considering moving to either VMWare Server 2.0 or switching to KVM instead, mainly because VMWS 1 is now obsolete and also because its limitations on video configurations is really annoying - I have a 22" 1680x1050 LCD monitor, hoping to upgrade sometime in the not-too-distant future to a 23 or 24" display with full HD (1920x1080), but VMWS 1 does not support any wide-screen configurations at all. I tend to use on-screen real estate to maximum benefit, and the 1152x864 maximum useful size I have now is just too small for me, so I'm thinking maybe it's time to upgrade to something newer/better. I've seen some of the horror stories about problems with VMWare 2.0, which is not at all encouraging, and I've taken a look at the Red Hat Virtualization guides (the 5.4 one that's online in html only) and also a PDF version for 5.2 that I found somewhere, and it _looks_ complicated. (One of the main benefits of VMWare Server that I really liked was that it is fairly easy to use and relatively low maintenance, if it works, and 1.0.8 works just fine, except for the screen issue.) OTOH, the built-in nature of KVM is really appealing, and if it works as well as other features of CentOS/RH/Linux, it would be nice to be able to avoid the separate upgrade and re-build-the-drivers-vmware-config.pl annoyance every time a new kernel comes along. I'm a big fan of well-integrated software, especially in this area (virtualization). One question I had that overrides most other considerations is how to transfer my existing XP VM over to whichever new underlying system I choose - is that even possible, or do I have to go through all the reinstallation pain yet another time? If I have to go that route, I'll probably opt for kvm and take that plunge so I can do it once and never again (ok, that was not supposed to be funny... :-). Recommendations? Thanks, as always. AR 9.3+ vs. savable fill-in PDFs on CentOS

I've tried reporting this to Adobe, but they are remarkably deaf to such an enormous market of free software users. At least as of AR 9.3, including the latest 9.3.1, I have been unable to view or work with the savable fill-in PDFs that I've pulled off the web in the last couple of months. I have no trouble at all with them in my Windows virtual machine, but the Linux version starts up, displays the window/frame outline, then crashes and dies silently. Since Adobe doesn't provide any useful channel of communications for support to users of its free products, even though they are essentially ubiquitous and somewhat essential (for things like this), apparently their recent breakthrough in the area of supporting Linux systems does not include actually supporting Linux systems users. So, since I have made that enormous leap of logic, I wonder, is anyone else experiencing this problem? Yes, I know all about evince - use it most of the time, but it does not handle the fill-in PDFs or the ones where you can save the filled-in values. Any other options? Thanks. mhr

apcupsd, APC UPSs, and batteries, resolved

Well, here's the tale: we got a "replacement kit" for some APC SmartUPS 3000 - rackmount UPSs. The "kit", costing about half of what APC is asking, is just the batteries, and you pull the tray out, open it up, and swap out the batteries. Except, I did this on one... and the replace battery light never went out. Not using apcupsd's apctest, not pushing the button. The five lights on the right that show power level went down to about one or two, and took an hour or two to come back up. apctest just said replace battery was the status. I put another set in. I swapped it with another UPS, and its lights went on, so it wasn't just that one. Also, these are just batteries, not chipped like an Epson inkjet print cartridge. I did the same on another a few weeks ago, and the same. Finally - I believe these had been replaced before - I went back online, and found the exact same ones. Got them in yesterday, replaced one that I'd replaced before, waited a couple hours, and pushed the test button. It thought about it, did the test, the power level only went down *one*... and the replace battery light went out. apcupsd also reports everything's wonderful. The ones that didn't do it were PowerSonic 1250 F2's. The ones that worked were BBHR5.8012. I *think* the difference is the HR. So, now I'll be going back to the original vendor, and asking for a replacement set - he doesn't seem to have BB, but if he can give me some other HR, I'll try that. The HR is "high rate", which I assume means high rate of dis/charge. I'll let y'all know what happens, but at this time, my opinion is that if you see a replacement kit for RBC43's, make *SURE* that they're HR. mark

No "you have new mail" message on login

Hello I have a few servers running CentOS release 5.4 (Final) and none of them are displaying a "you have new mail" message on login. I've asked Professor Google but he is strangely silent. Have I neglected an important setting? I thought this was a default on most linux ditributions. Any help much appreciated. Ian

kmod srpm build issue

I have applied a patch to the spec for a digium srpm, dahdi-linux-kmod-2.2.1.1-1_centos5.2.6.18_164.15.1.el5.src.rpm and have what I thought was all I needed for deps: # rpm -qa |grep kernel kernel-devel-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 kernel-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 kernel-headers-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 yet the build fails with: You do not appear to have the sources for the 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5-xen kernel installed. # ll /usr/src/kernels/ total 8 drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 4096 Mar 24 04:41 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5-x86_64 drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 4096 Mar 29 18:25 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5-xen-x86_64 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 Mar 29 18:25 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5xen-x86_64 -> 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5-xen-x86_64 Anyone know what I might be doing wrong? I've got a server with several ip's on eth0. I want to block all traffic *except* to port 80 on them, but not on any other IPs, so that eth0 is www.xxx.yyy.zzz eth0:1 is www.xxx.yyy.ggg eth0:2 is www.xxx.yyy.hhh I've tried -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p tcp -d www.xxx.yyy.ggg --dport ! 80 -j DROP -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p tcp -d www.xxx.yyy.hhh --dport ! 80 -j DROP and restarted (and several variants of this). iptables-save displays *filter :INPUT ACCEPT [0:0] :FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [769:48207] :RH-Firewall-1-INPUT - [0:0] -A INPUT -j RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -A FORWARD -j RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -d www.xxx.yyy.ggg -p tcp -m tcp ! --dport 80 -j DROP -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -d www.xxx.yyy.hhh -p tcp -m tcp ! --dport 80 -j DROP -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p icmp -m icmp --icmp-type any -j ACCEPT <...> and I notice it puts the ! in front of the --dport, but has no complaints. However, I can telnet to www.xxx.yyy.hhh 443. What's wrong with the rules? mark
