Hello, Can somebody recommend CentOS-OK, dual socket motherboards for compute elements? A quick look up at Intel pages suggests they are thinking of them as "server boards", but then they recommend them as "for SMB", I'm somewhat puzzled about it. Is one meant to have one or the other? If so, which is recommended? NetworkManager trouble with CentOS 5.4 and KDE3

I'm evaluating CentOS 5.4 for our company and one of our requirements is that it must also run on laptops. I've managed to get everything working so far except for wireless networks. The problem here seems to be that CentOS fails to provide a knetworkmanager package, and we're using KDE3 for various reasons. Thus, we're limited to Networkmanager-gnome which works but fails to save passwords in KDE3 and only works in Gnome. Of course kwallet is installed but requires knetworkmanager to work. The only solution I found so far was to log into Gnome, connect to the wireless network and save the password but that's certainly NOT an opion. I guess the question is quite simple: how do I get NetworkManager to save passwords in KDE3? It's a critical issue and switching to Gnome is not an option either. Infact it's Novell's decision to ditch KDE3 and focus on KDE4 instead that made us turn our backs on openSUSE in the first place. So, is it possible to solve this teeny-tiny problem some other way? ooimpress in show only mode

hi all. Look at ooimpress on centos 5 x86_64. been trying to find a way to get it to just show a power point and not show the editor screen. tried: ooimpress -show pp.ppt ooimpress -invisible -show pp.ppt ooimpress -headless -show pp.ppt and others I always get the editor window. Did some google searching and didnt find anything... Was wondering if anyone knows how to start impress and not show the editor. I just want to see the power point in slide show mode. Thanks, Jerry

An odd IPMI problem

Well, we're figure the board's got problems, but I installed OpenIPMI a couple weeks ago, and fired it up as a service, then added a cron job. That all ran well until last evening; we came in to find 5 zillion emails complaining Unable to open SDR for reading I worked my way through logs, and googling, and then trying to run ipmitool by hand, and it complains there's no such device as /dev/ipmi[three versions]. More googling, and down to modprobe, then insmod, of ipmi_si. Then trying to give it parameters, and it continually comes back (after 5 min of trying) with "No such device". One thing I note: after I found the docs for IPMI, I found the list of parms <http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/IPMI.txt>, and gave it, among other things, the slave_attrs. Then I look at dmesg and /var/log/messages... and it seems to be utterly ignoring that parm. unable to get domain status from libvirt & KVM

I have a python script that monitors the VMs on physical host servers running Xen, but the script doesn't work properly on a server I just built with KVM. The script runs as a non-root user and simply gathers some details on the status and names of the domains running on the host. Both Xen and KVM servers are running the same version of libvirt (libvirt-0.6.3-20.1.el5_4) and have the same, default /etc/libvirt/libvirtd.conf config file. To troubleshoot, I've been running python interactively. FreeNX : forward audio from server to client ?

Hi, I setup a FreeNX server with a GNOME desktop, and I can access it from a client with the NoMachine client. Everything is running fine, and now I only have two problems left : audio and printing forwarding. I'll follow the "only-slay-one-dragon-at-a-time" rule and take care of audio first. Did anyone manage to forward sound with FreeNX ? Here, server and client are using CentOS. And yes, I did check the little "enable multimedia" checkbox on the client, but to no avail. Whenever I play a sound in the client session, it comes out on the server speakers. Any suggestions ? Niki

IPSec VPN Setup?

Hello Everyone, I have been tasked at work with setting up a VPN connection from our server to a client's network. The only problem is that I have never done anything like this before, so I am not sure where to start. We are running CentOS 5.4 on our server. I do not yet know what the client is running for their VPN, the only thing I know of from the client, is we need to use IPSec for our VPN connection to them. I have been googling, and have found quite a bit of information, but it is a little overwhelming, as I am new to setting up a VPN. Is the a "standard" method for doing this sort of setup that I am missing so far? Exim VS Postfix (no flame wars please)

Can anyone, who has used both Postfix & Exim please share some experience with me? Which of these 2 did you prefer to use, and why? cPanel uses Exim (and AFAIK, only Exim), VirtualMin seems to use Postfix by default and often times when a custom server is installed a client doesn't know which to use so we recommend Exim. But, what are the differences between these 2, from your experience, if you don't mind telling me? Filter web content in a LAN ?

Hi, I installed a network of five desktops in a small town hall, all running CentOS 5.4. The machines are publicly, and the mayor asked me to find some solution to effectively filter web content, as the kids' first reflex is to visit the interesting bits of the Internet first, from satanism to porn. One of the machines will be set up as a router anyway, since the public computer room gets its internet access from the town hall, and I've decided to make another subnet for it. Any recommendations for that? Niki

I set up a 5.4 server with tomcat5 All standard packages from CentOS repo I can not seem to access the tomcat manager from a remote host I can access the tomcat admin remotely I have a manager role and user defined in tomcat-users.xml Attempting to access the manager gets me HTTP Status 403 - Access to the requested resource has been denied type Status report message Access to the requested resource has been denied description Access to the specified resource (Access to the requested resource has been denied) has been forbidden. proftpd wrap

Hi, My ftpd is being abused. Maximum login attempts exceeded from hosts: ::ffff:64.251.22.142[::ffff:64.251.22.142] : 24197 Time(s) I had came across an article stating that proftpd with mod wrap can actually block these IP using denyhosts. I had googled but I did not see any proftpd rpm with mod wrap. Is there anyone with a copy would like to share? Or can someone share a spec file, so I can roll my own rpm. I am running on CentOS 5.4. UPDATE: I tried with FreeBSD8 as well and the DNS query didn't work. LVM & Stripe

Hello list, I have a question about LVM. My server has five disks and I will use it to create a LVM environment. I saw in the lvcreate man page that I can use the “-i” option to set the number of disks that I want to stripe the lvols, but this option doesn’t exists in the “lvchange” option (in case I add new disks to the VG). I had in mind: create 10 lvols – “lvcreate -i5 -L 10G MyVG /dev/MyVG/lvol[1-10]” and in the future, add more disks and increate the stripe value of the existing lvols. Does anybody knows how to change the parameter “-i" of a lvol that already exists? strange network problem

Hi, I am trying to fix a problem I have for about a week now. The environment is: --several independent servers with Centos5.4 on the latest patchlevel (example will be server2) All of them are working properly. --a machine with Xen installed to host some virtual machines (xenserver1) --domu servers on xenserver1 (crmserver1, winserver1) The whole network is connected with a Lancom router to a DSL line. Some days ago I noticed that server2 was updated properly, but xenserver1, crmserver1 and winserver were not updating the OS properly. They seemed to be cut off the internet. I can ping from all to all servers internally, I can ssh from all to all servers internally and I can browse the Internet from server2 successfully (using IP-numbers and hostnames), but xenserver1 and its domu clients could not connect to the internet. I checked the firewalls on xenserver, and crmserver1. They seemed to be OK and stopping them with "etc/init.d/iptables stop" didn't solve the problem. I have access to all of the HEX data on each drive, and I now which sector each stripe starts at. Is there any way that I can reconstruct my data from that? When a file gets split up in RAID0, does the controller use the same sectors on each stripe to write the file parts? Looking at the documentation of the /etc/group file including some google searches, it appears to me that, contrary to the man pages for group, Linux systems generally do not put membership user names for the user's primary group in the record for it in the /etc/group file, only for secondary groups. FreeBSD seems to do the same thing while SCO OpenServer has full entries for the primary group as well as secondaries. Is there a best practice when manipulating these regarding line length? I've see articles that recommend splitting long entries into multiple group lines with the same group id, while at least some SuSE Linux Enterprise systems produce single long lines (30,869 characters on a site with about 5,100 accounts). How would the system's group maintenance routines interact with a group file where this was done? creating partitions on a 2.7TB drive

Hello, sorry for the long email, it's a little hard to explain this issue. The gist of it is that the Ubuntu version of parted allowed me to do something which perhaps should not be allowed i.e. creating partitions on a 2.7TB drive when the partition table is not *gpt* but *msdos*. I am trying to configure 2 identical servers, both are Dell Poweredge 2970 machines with 6 disks in them configured as a RAID 5 with one hotspare, and both give me 2.726TB of space after the RAID 5 is configured. There are slight differences between the BIOS versions and Firmware versions of the LSI disk controller, etc but I'm not sure that matters in this case. Now, I setup server "A" a few months ago and for some reason that I don't remember now I resorted to using a Ubuntu 64-bit LiveCD to create the partitions. Since the disk is larger than 2TB, I had to use 'parted' to create the partitions. So I happily created the partitions I wanted which are below: / 50 GB /var 20 GB /data the remainder (a large partition) Now, after a few months I forgot all about the Ubuntu LiveCD and tried to setup server "B" using the CentOS 5.3 x86_64 CD. However the installer immediately complained that "this disk in using a GPT partition table and this computer cannot boot using GPT" and it keeps saying this no matter what I do. I've tried creating a separate /boot partition, using LVMs for everything, etc but nothing works, even "dd" did not give me much luck, although perhaps I should try deleting the "end" of the disk rather than the beginning? I have now noticed that when press Ctrl-Alt-F2 on server "B" during the CentOS install and attempt to use 'parted' it says that the "label" type is "gpt". It allows me to create new partitions, etc but it's no help because the installer keeps complaining that the machine will not boot with a GPT partition table. So I need to really use a "msdos" partition type to boot this machine successfully, but the CentOS version of parted will not allow me to do that. The additional mystery is that if I check server "A" which I partitioned a few months ago using Ubuntu, the "label" type is "msdos"!! How is that possible? In addition if I use the CentOS CD and try to use parted on server "A" now, it gives the following error: --------------------------- # parted GNU Parted 1.8.1 Using /dev/sda Welcome to GNU Parted! Type 'help' to view a list of commands. (parted) p Error: msdos labels do not support devices that have more than 4294967295 sectors. --------------------------- BUT if I reboot this same server (server A) again using the Ubuntu LiveCD parted works just fine! It prints the label type as "msdos", and it prints the above partition table correctly and gives me the right size for it and everything. So what is going on here? Is the Ubuntu parted somehow buggy and allowing me to do something dangerous that I will regret later, or can I just ignore the label setting in parted and continue to setup Server "B" the same as "A" and hope for the best? I would appreciate any insights.

CentOS server running java - won't let go of swap

I'm monitoring some CentOS 5 servers running Sun Java. We have set things up so 2048 MB of RAM are available for the base operating system, taking into account the xMx and permgen settings. What we're seeing is the swap space getting used up, and not released. Is this normal behavior? Performance doesn't seem to be affected, however I'm a bit concerned that the swap file is completely full: free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 9993 9945 48 0 174 1695 -/+ buffers/cache: 8074 1919 Swap: 2047 2033 14 Here are the xMx and permgen settings: -Xms7177m -Xmx7177m -XX:MaxPermSize=768m Apart from Java/Tomcat/Apache and some HP hardware monitoring tools we are not running anything else on this server.

Samsung f3 hd502hj and Centos 5.4

Not sure if anyone has seen this probably not but thought that I would throw it out there, running centos 5.4 on a tyan s4985 and I wanted to add a hot swap drive cage to it so I added a supermicro cage and bought some drives, not wanting raid but something for storage and rsync backups. Well I decided to buy some of the newer samsung F3 hd502hj 500Gig hard drives, supposedly good performance for the price since they didnt have enough of them I bought some WD black 500G drives also. Well when I got everything back together I noticed that I was getting errors when centos was first trying to boot, the error was Comreset -16 sata1.... wash and repeat 4 times, then it did it a second time, finally it would time out and and start to boot. Once booted it did not see the 2 samsung drives but saw all of the other drives, didn't matter what channel etc...whether it was in the drive cage or not. I orginally thought it was the bios of the tyan board, which is bad, but to no avail. I finally booted one of the newer buntu livecd and all drives were picked up, so i wonder if it is a kernel issue..if anyone has any ideas or would like more info please let me know....other wise I will need to swap/sell some drives....Thanks. upgrading 32-bit installation to 64-bit

Hi! I've got a 32-bit Centos installed on an AMD Phenom II X2 processor and I'm interested ni making it 64 bit instead. But I'd sure like to avoid having to go back thru the whole installation again... in part because I've got sotware RAID set up and I'm assuming that I can't do a fresh install into it without having to re-configure the whole thing. So, is it possible (and practical) to upgrade a 32 bit system to 64? Hi all, Does anyone know if it's possible to recover an LVM partition from a drive that was fdisked? I accidently fdisk'd the wrong drive (had to fdisk a lot of 160GB drivers from old servers and one still has important data on that client now wants) by running fdisk /dev/sdc & deleting the partitions. Hello, I'm running wordpress via rpm on centos 5.4 i believe it is. There's a new version out v .92 and am wanting to upgrade to it. I'm trying the automatic install and am being prompted for credentials. Googling shows this is most likely a permissions problem. I was wondering what the right permissions were to allow automatic upgrades of wordpress, plugins, and/or themes? Thanks. Dave.

BMC IPMI configuration on centos 5.4 64 BIT Server

Hi all, I am implementing two node cluster , but the hardware they given me contains only the Base Board Management controller (BMC) . Also I HEARD SOME BMC wont support power fencing, how can i check my There is no management port like HP ILO or Dell DRAC for cluster fencing . This hardware belongs to the vendor HCL. For BMC Configuration they are providing the exe setup file for windows to configure IPMI ip,usernmae and password but there is no setup tools for centos 5. So i want help from some one in configuring the IPMI from Operating system level from OpenIpmi tools. if some one provide me the step by step instruction or how to in configuring the IPMI to use fence_ipmi on centos 5.4 x86_64 hardware . Really its very urgent i have to handover the server in next 12 hours. Hello, Anyone knows a repository with apache + mod_ssl + openssl + (other openssl programs) with SNI support. I have tried someone but obtain brutal production server crash, because (now!!! Hi, guys: I'm trying to define an alias in .cshrc with the embeded awk command, like this : alias checketh0 "ip add ls eth0 |awk '/inet/{print $2}' |sed -n '1p' " Then i run "source ~/.cshrc" and run "checketh0" command in the terminal , but the result is the following : " inet 192.168.18.18/24 brd 192.168.18.255 scope global eth0" but i want this result : 192.168.18.18/24 How do I do it ? Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks for you help ~

iptables bugs going untended?

Hi, I submitted a bug report, 0004193 and did a forum post: http://centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=24748&forum=42 regarding a bug / problem I keep coming up against with CentOS 5.x's kernel. I've done a load of searching on the subject but can't see any references on any CentOS list or mantis, so I'm trying to follow up and see if anyone can work on it, though there are references to it occurring in other distributions/kernels, though I'm yet to see a reference to a solution though it logically must exist. This problem is way beyond my expertise. Unfortunately I've not seen any response at all with the bug submission, and checking over mantis it would appear not much is done regarding iptables, there are a number of bug reports that are sitting in a new state (http://bugs.centos.org/search.php?project_id=0&search=iptables&sticky_issue…) having been automatically assigned to kbsingh(a)karan.org. Is there any chance someone can help me progress with this bug at all? I really do want to avoid compiling iptables and ipset and using them on the servers not out of inability or laziness, but from the patching, security and server consistency perspective (one of the bonus points of using distributions like CentOS) Paul
