Centos 8 Mate?

Without wanting to sound too pushy, I'm wondering if there is any update on the status of Mate now that Centos 8 has been released? I think you need to give a lot more explanation on what is going on because I (at least) have no idea how you are using a non-shipped text editor . Usually if a tool is not giving similar results... I usually start by setting up a new account and unset all SHELL variables in said account. I then see if the problem occurs. If it doesn't, I make changes one by one from the other shells variables to see if it does. HW update. Fedora 30 to Centos?

Due hardware update. Many years on Fedora, would like to swap out to AMD motherboard( x570) and graphics (RX480) I'm led to believe that Fedora Linux is too 'new' for Centos. Question for those with experience of both, what will I miss on Centos wrt Fedora? Not all that bothered about being 'up to the minute', and after 20+ Fedora installs it does get to be a drag... Can someone that has RHEL developer access look up the details of this bug, bug 1671147 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1671147 was closed as duplicate to this bug - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1558219 however when you try to access the details it states: "You are not authorized to access bug #1558219. CentOS 8 and DELL 7540 Intel AX200 WIFI

Hello all, I recently bought a brand new Dell Precision 7540 laptop. Before buying I checked the specifications from the RedHat hardware list and they said that it was "fully RedHat 8 Certified" and listed all the hardware that was "certified" to work with that laptop. https://access.redhat.com/ecosystem/hardware/3979771 I have had good results the last few years with Dell and CentOS, all the equipment has worked fine. However, this time, I got the laptop, installed CentOS 8, and the built-in ethernet port works fine but the Intel AX200 Wifi is not recognized and doesn't show up, so I can't use WiFi, but everything else seems to be working fine. I verified that it *does* work under Windows 10, so the hardware is there and works fine, it just is not recognized and configured under CentOS 8. I called Dell Tech Support and they said "since you didn't buy RedHat 8 from us then we can't help you". Is this just a temporary problem that an update will soon solve or is this something that needs to be brought to the attention of RedHat? Should I file a bug report with bugzilla.redhat.com or is there something I'm not doing or need to do correctly to get it to work? Or is there some package I'm missing that will enable it? I was a bit flabergasted because I've gone for so many years without having to do anything special, it all "Just Works (TM)" on my previous computers. ls permissions format changed in CentOS 8

When I use "ls -al" on a directory, for files with only owner read/write permission, the displayed attributes are "-rw-", not "-rw-------". That means the file names don't line up with other files in the directory, which makes the listing harder to read. What changed where and how do I fix that?

Have "system"/Hunspell dictionaries stopped working in CentOS 7 Firefox?

Until quite recently, multiple spell-checker languages were available in Firefox on my CentOS 7 system. (They could be selected from "Languages" under the right-click menu in text boxes.) After a recent system upgrade, there is only "English (United States)". I don't think I had installed any extra Firefox dictionaries as such, but the "global" spell-checking support is set up to support a few extra languages via hunspell-<lang> software packages. I believe Firefox used to be able to pick these up - probably through a link from /usr/lib64/firefox to /usr/share/myspell that the CentOS firefox package provides. Did I get that right? Has the mechanism stopped working? Is there any way to re-enable the system dictionaries? Note that I get all the expected dictionaries in Thunderbird, which appears to rely on a similar hack. My Firefox is "firefox-68.1.0-2.el7.centos.x86_64". Thanks. - Toralf

smart card auth

I updated my work desktop to kernel-3.10.0-1062.4.1.el7.x86_64 yesterday as I was leaving. This morning booted into that new kernel I was unable to login using my common access card. Rebooted in the previous kernel (3.10.0-1062.1.2.el7.x86_64) and smart card login works fine. Anyone else seeing any similar problems? UEFI and PXE

We have a working PXE setup. I've tried to adapt it to UEFI as per RHEL6 manual, but the client won't boot. Strangely, tcpdump shows that the client tries to download all files via tftp from the dhcp server rather than the tftp server (they are different). next-server is pointing to the tftp server. Any clues?

For example, currently a line in my kickstart would be: part /home --ondisk=/dev/sda --fstype ext4 --size=58G --asprimary What is missing so the type is set correctly to linux root or linux home? Centos 8 & AMD hardware?

Putting together a system build, AMD based. Ryzen 5 CPU on X570 chipset with Radeon RX480 GPU. Guessing this will be supported by Centos OK? (Unless you know different! :-) ) https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/radeon-400-series/radeon-rx-400-ser… Shows driver support. I understood that in the end CentOS Linux (8) keeps on being "built from publicly available open source source code provided by Red Hat, Inc for Red Hat Enterprise Linux"[1] Is that correct? Conky on CentOS 8

Hi I've been using conky in conjunction with gcalcli on Scientific Linux 7 to display google calendar data on screen. In CentOS 8, I have set up the gcalcli part, but I can't find a conky rpm. Is anyone working on creating this for CentOS 8? There appears to be an rpm for fedora 28 onwards, but there are dependency issues. Can anyone help? -- Cheers Bill

CentOS 8: what changed (regular UNIX admin commands)?

Hello Experts! I'm sure many of you run CentOS for some time already. My question is: is there some place that lists which of the most often used sysadmin commands are gone and what are replacements for them. Or what else one needs to do after successful installation. (in the past it was process accounting that was not enabled by default, but which gives you quite some handle in investigating compromise). I just tried quite ordinaly command of freshly installed CentOS 8: last and got an error: last: (default utx db): No such file or directory I realize that it could be just me, and I'll cope with that myself one way or another but this one prompted me to ask everybody: Is there anything I can read so I can learn what differenmt to expect on CentOS 8 from, say, CentOS 7? rsync: did not see server greeting.

Hallo, until last week I used a debian system for syncing debian and centos mirrors. Everything worked fine for years. After installing centos 7 rsync doesn t work any longer. The configuration of the firewall is the same as before. The message I see is rsync: did not see server greeting. Has anyone a hint for me? Are ther any main differences between rsync debian and rsync centos? Thanks Ralf

Centos 8 hardware compatibility testing?

With Centos 7 and earlier I've been using the Live CD image to test new hardware (laptops etc) for compatibility. That way I can get a desktop up and try the sound and the networking and whatnot without affecting what is already installed on the machine, and then if everything looks good I can just run the installer right from the Live CD image. Stream not installing centos-release-stream

It looks like anaconda isn't installing centos-release-stream when you install CentOS 8 Stream. I just did a minimal install through PXE and it pulled everything from the 8-stream repository and installed the stream versions, but didn't install centos-release-stream. (Below is the output of yum list \*release\* immediately after install.) This means that it will not get updates from stream. C8 regression / tmp on tmpfs

Does someone have a working tmp on tmpfs via systemctl enable tmp.mount under CentOS8/RHEL8? This seems to work straight in EL7 ... # LANG=C systemctl enable tmp.mount The unit files have no installation config (WantedBy, RequiredBy, Also, Alias settings in the [Install] section, and DefaultInstance for template units). This means they are not meant to be enabled using systemctl. Possible reasons for having this kind of units are: 1) A unit may be statically enabled by being symlinked from another unit's .wants/ or .requires/ directory. 2) A unit's purpose may be to act as a helper for some other unit which has a requirement dependency on it. 3) A unit may be started when needed via activation (socket, path, timer, D-Bus, udev, scripted systemctl call, ...). 4) In case of template units, the unit is meant to be enabled with some instance name specified. -- Leon

Migrating users to new server

An age-old problem and there are some simple awk/grep-based scripts to handle the easy cases. Are there any more sophisticated tools that can extract all non-system users and groups and then merge the result into the password/group/shadow/gshadow files of a new server? I don't need home directories or mbox inboxes created because I'll rsync those over once I've created the users. Tricky problems include merging entries for existing users and groups, and renumbering if one is moving from a 500-based system to a 1000-based system. Failure to install boot loader on Dell PowerEdge R720xd

What command does the installer use to install the boot loader? I sucessfully installed CentOS 8 to the server, with /usr on a mirrored SSD pair on the RAID controller and /boot on the internal SD card (where Dell wants one to boot from). Before rebooting, I inspected the installation at /mnt/sysimage and the disk usage looked reasonable. I saw a grub directory in /boot but no second stage boot loader nor any config files for it. At the end of the process, I got an error message that the installer failed to install the boot loader and the resulting system wouldn't boot. It didn't. There were no details useful for diagnosis. So now I'm about to boot the installer DVD into rescue mode to manually install the boot loader and see the real error message. So what command do I issue?

When changing the content and rebuilding the repo new packages are not found. My question: What is the right way to reinit a repo complete? Manual partitioning and LVM

I can't seem to figure out how to partition for install. I've tried both CentOS 8 and 7.7 netinstalls. I've got 3 disks: sda (big hardware RAID array), sdb (SSD), and sdc (internal SD card for booting). I want to put /boot on sdc, /usr on sdb, and / on sda. I don't care what format is used on sdb and sdc, whatever will let it boot. I want LVM on sda so that I can use snapshotting for backups. I can pre-format sdb1 and sdc1 as ext4 usinga gparted live DVD. If I select manual partitioning, I can then label and assign those two to /usr and /boot. I can see sda in the drives available on the first detination screen but but I don't see it in the manual partitioning screen. So I don't see how to partition and format it as an LVM volume that I can mount to /.

Hi all, I have installed a CentOS-8 server to accomplish some tests using kvm guests … All these guests are centos8 also. Custom LiveCD images with CentOS8

Is it at this moment possible to build custom LiveCD images? Are they all necessary tools available in CentOS8? I have never done this and wonder if it is still possible for C8. Hello, can any install more then one KVM Client with UEFI ?? On my system it is not possible; I have total crash on the system, when I install a client with UEFI after Install one UEFI System, it is only possible to install a KVM client without UEFI this is working?? I found so match broken things, so I mean the best situation is to go back to 7.7 :-(. CentOS 8 Docker container is missing dnf-plugin-ovl

Hi everyone, I've been running some tests on Travis CI with CentOS 7 and CentOS 8 based Docker containers and having issues with the CentOS 8 ones. With the centos:8 image, the RPM database eventually gets corrupted due to the default overlay2 storage driver used by Docker. This issue doesn't show with the centos:7 container. It already comes with the "fastestmirror" and "ovl" plugins installed. The "ovl" plugin is a workaround to avoid this corruption. See the bottom of https://docs.docker.com/storage/storagedriver/overlayfs-driver/ for more details. Fedora 29 and 30 already have an equivalent "dnf-plugin-ovl" package ( https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/dnf-plugin-ovl) However, I couldn't find it for RHEL8 or CentOS 8. I can use the "touch" workaround for now. But are there plans to bring this plugin to CentOS 8 and make it part of the CentOS 8 image, just like on CentOS 7? Or is there some other way to achieve the same with dnf? What is /etc/subuid ?

Dear Experts, Could someone enlighten me about the following file: /etc/subuid ? This file appears to be owned by "setup" package. This is CentOS 7 system, and until now these files if existed were never changed. Today I have added user quite routine way, by doing /usr/sbin/groupadd -g 4500 [username] /usr/sbin/useradd -g [username] -u 4500 -c "User Name, email@domain" [username] And the file /etc/subuid changed and user was added into it: [username]:100000:65536 Nothing like that was happening before. This is first time I create account after update done on Oct 3, 2019. I checked several CentOS 7 machines, basically doing this: # grep subuid /usr/sbin/useradd Binary file /usr/sbin/useradd matches And CentOS 7 machines indeed may have that file name in the useradd binary. None of CentOS 6 machines has that. I tried to do FreeBSD-ism: man /etc/subuid came empty, and realized that I'm doing FreeBSD-ism. I tried to do search on the web (did not "google", I use duckduckgo... so I "did search"), and came pretty much empty. Is it just me, or indeed something in CentOS 7 indeed changed? And what is it? Another question on the same note: how do we find out what the file is about and is used for in Linux, apart from searching on the web. (When there are surprises like the one I had today, one does like to know what this particular file is used for). Thanks in advance for your answers. Crashed a CentOS 8 installation.

Hi, Note: Please do this on a test VM. My issue: I took the output of the following command $ yum list installed | xargs -n3 | column -t | tail -n +3 |cut -d' ' -f1 > packages.list from a CentOS 7.7 Installation. and did $ dnf install $(cat packages.list) --setopt=strict=0 on Freshly installed Minimal CentOS 8 VM. When I reboot I get Failed to switch root: Specified switch root path /sysroot does not seem to be an OS tree. os-release file is missing. Hiding a grub menuentry?

Does anyone know if it is possible to 'hide' a grub menuentry with CentOS 7 ? I have a custom menuentry that I don't want to be seen on the grub screen - but it needs to be selectable as the entry to boot via 'grub2-reboot' I've scanned the grub2 documentation - but I can't find anything obvious - so I'm guessing it can't be done - unless someone knows otherwise ? Not going to the querelle of OpenSSH 7 removing DSA keys and DSA vs RSA (eg. some considerations by some years ago here: https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/5096/rsa-vs-dsa-for-ssh-authen… ), any hint on smarter way to add? I suppose further updates could change content of /etc/crypto-policies/back-ends/opensshserver.config that btw is part of crypto-policies-20181217-6.git9a35207.el8.noarch and not openssh-server-7.8p1-4.el8.x86_64 HIH others incurring in this problem and thanks in advance for any insight/hint, Gianluca

easy way to stop old ssl's

HI all, When CentOS 7 was created things like SSLv2 TLSv1 TLSv1.1 etc... were all OK, but now they have fallen out of favor for various reasons. Updating to CentOS 7.7 does not automatically disable these types of items from apache - is there a script that is available that can be ran to bring a box up to current "accepted" levels ? Or is that an edit by hand, do it yourself on all your boxes or create your own script type of thing. Just checking if there is an easier way. Thanks, Jerry

So, I have a client that has an internal use application that needs an ancient version of libc5. That's not a typo; libc5. Before the server that ran it died about a year and a half ago (said server was an AMD K6-2/450 with a 6GB Western Digital Caviar drive that had been spinning nearly continuously for almost 20 years!) it was running on Red Hat Linux 5.2. The last version of CentOS that shipped with a libc5 was 2.1. So I set them up a KVM guest running CentOS 2.1, mainly because Red Hat 5.2 wouldn't recognize the network at all, using the e1000 network driver, and it ran well. Now, yes, there are no updates, but no it doesn't matter; it's an internal use application that has a very small footprint and very low risk. After the update on the host to 7.7.1908, the network stopped running. The host also has a CentOS 7 guest that is still working properly. If I change the 2.1 system to not automatically load the e1000 driver and console in and 'modprobe e1000' manually, it starts working again, for a while. Any ideas as to where to start looking? qemu-kvm-ev itself, or libvirt? I'm planning to start out with rollbacks to the previous versions of each to try to find where the issue starts.

Hello. Im new on Centos I recently installed Centos 8 and i have the following problem with my browser I cant play media on the browser. for example i cant play. https://twitter.com/Ffs_OMG/status/1183397555914366976 Or i cant listen shows or songs on mixcloud. for example https://www.mixcloud.com/parapolitika-parapolitika/%CE%B3%CE%B9%CF%89%CF%81… i get the message "Sorry - your browser is not supported. Please update your browser or install another such as Google Chrome. Mixcloud requires HTML5 audio with MP3 and MP4 support." I suspect that these 2 problems relate. Any ideas how to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

CVE-2019-6470 - dhcpd6 bug in CentOS 8 not being fixed?

The CVE-2019-6470 bug in isc-dhcp for ipv6 causing the server to crash on a regular basis is marked as "will not fix" for RHEL 8 on Red Hat's web site [1]. It's already got a fix for RHEL/CentOS 7, and other distros (like Ubuntu and Fedora) have released fixes. Is anyone familiar with the issue, or know about a (reasonable) workaround? Or why Red Hat doesn't want to fix it? I tried to contact Red Hat support to get their reasoning, but as we only have self-support subscriptions with them, they were not particulary interested in talking to me. qeum on centos 8 with nvme disk

Hi All - I use qemu on my centOS 7.7 box that has software raid of 2- SSD disks. I installed an nVME drive in the computer also. I tried to insall CentOS8 on it (the physical /dev/nvme0n1 with the -hda /dev/nvme0n1 as the disk. The process started installing but is really "slow" - I was expecting with the nvme device it would be much quicker. Is there something I am missing how to get a faster disk access ? Thanks, Jerry
