issues with 3rd party repos for centos

i'm reading the lowdown on 3rd party repos with respect to centos here: http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories and i have a couple questions and observations. first, the entry for centosplus reads: "Popular packages from this repository include: postfix with database support, a rebuilt kernel with additional drivers & filesystem support, php5 and mysql5." however, i popped over to the centosplus packages site: http://mirror.centos.org/centos-5/5.4/centosplus/ and checked under x86_64, but i don't see any php or mysql packages. am i misreading something? next, regarding remi collet's repo: "Has been recommended on the mailing list and forum for mysql 5.1 and php5.2.9." however, if you check over there (say, under x86_64): http://rpms.famillecollet.com/enterprise/5/remi/x86_64/repoview/development… remi appears to already be up to php 5.3.1 (and even 5.3.2 under the "test" link), so the centos wiki page is a bit out of date. finally, all i want is to install PHP 5.3.x (and, obviously, dependent packages) on a stock centos 5.4 system. is remi collet's repo a good choice for that? the centos wiki recommends "extreme caution" for that repo, which makes me nervous. more to the point, are there any serious issues involving bumping up php to 5.3.1 on a stock centos 5.4 system while leaving everything else where it is? rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. Slightly OT: check creation of a group

Hi, I'm currently writing an install script for an application, and my already limited Bash skills are a bit rusty. I want to check if a group exists, and if it doesn't, then create it. Only thing I found is: if [ grep medintux /etc/group ]; then continue else groupadd medintux fi Apparently I can't seem to "negate" the test, e. g. something like if !(grep medintux /etc/group) Any suggestions for the correct syntax here ? Python Script Issue

cron mystery

I've just noticed that cron.daily, etc, do not seem to be running on my CentOS-5.4 system. The scripts in /etc/cron.d/ all run fine, but those in /etc/cron.hourly, etc, seem to be ignored. I see that according to /var/log/cron these commands are seen, eg Feb 28 18:01:01 helen crond[6680]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly) but none of the scripts in this directory seem to be touched. I've tried running them by hand, and this seems to work fine. CentOS 4.8 - PHP Version 5.1.6 and SQLite

I wish to use the SQLite extensions for php but the version I updated to with yum update (see above) was compiled '--without-sqlite'. I could sure use some help getting these extensions enabled. As I am unfamiliar with OOP the references to PDO on the web have been meaningless to me. Furthermore, a trip to the local book store today (Barnes & Noble) revealed no php books that even mention PDO! PHP.net documentation seems to be written as if PDO is the preferred method but I cannot even get a simple query to execute. Alternatively, can someone point me to a reference that shows actual examples of how to use PDO and SQLite? extras repository broken?

emergency! linux kickstart pxe boot needed

Hey folks, I'm at colocaiton in the middle of a big rebuild and it seems I have a faulty CD rom in the server that I need to put Centos on via Kickstart. So I cannot boot the Centos 5.4 net install CD. Is PXE kickstart easy to set up? I have a laptop here with DHCP already going. I google and a bunch of stuff comes up but it does not look simple. LDAP Server Access Problem

Hi All, I am at my wits end. I have a LDAP server setup on a machine (the names are changed to protect the innocent) example.mydomain.com running CentOS 5.4 and LDAP version 2.3.43-3. If I issue a ldapsearch command while logged onto the LDAP server host I get a valid response back. For example: > ldapsearch -x -LLL -H ldaps://example.mydomain.com:636 "(uid=joker)" \ > sn uid dn: uid=joker,ou=People,dc=mydomain,dc=com uid: joker sn: Nicholson Everything works as expected. However if I try the same command from a remote machine remote.mydomain.com the command just hangs. I can not find a log entry anywhere that indicates something is wrong. I have checked the obvious things I can check. SMARTD (?)

Ok, I saw more sectors on a drive yesterday, so this morning, no one was running on it, and I took it out of use, then bounced it onto a DVD, and ran fsck -c (check for bad blocks). It finished. I bounce the server. And SMARTD reports the sectors as "currently unreadable (pending) sectors", and "offline uncorrectable sectors". Does smartd cache its info somewhere, or is it reading what fsck already marked as bad? And this has happened before, under 5.3, and under continuing current updates of 5.4.... mark

mod_proxy and html rewriting

Looks like proxying a site that uses dynamically generated urls that include the bound ip of the server needs a module to rewrite links in html. Are there any mods shipped in base that can do what mod_proxy_html mod_xml2enc can for this? Thanks, jlc

rkhunter doesn't remove temp suspscan files in /dev/shm

Alle, I know this is off-topic, so I apologize in advance, but we have installed rkhunter from EPEL (because it has the current version, 1.3.6 vice the 1.3.4 rpmforge version) on our CentOS machine and find that it does not remove the files in /dev/shm it uses for the SUSPSCAN test, this triggering a warning for said test. This was a known bug that was supposed to be have been fixed in V1.3.1. I can't find an EPEL mailing list to send the question to, so I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. question on kvm

I had used and old kvm-87 on centos 5.4 x86_64 I was wanting ot update that and use the newer qemu-kvm-0.12.3 I downloaded that and everything was good there - but the kernel modules are not included. So I downloaded (or started to download) kvm-kvod something... but there is nothing there for 2.6.18? How do I get the correct 2.6.18 version? Jerry

rack configurator?

Hey folks, Does anyone know of a rack configurator that runs on CentOS? It does not have to even be very fancy - immediately I'm just looking for an easy way to keep track of what is in my racks, and being able to have a visual of it. Maybe juggle stuff around. Bonus if it does power calculations based on model numbers and so on - or data I punch in for each model. But really right now some kind of very specific CAD or Draw tool that is specific to this purpose. It's probably impossible to be perfect without a single point of coordination, but you generally won't get in trouble leaving epel enabled during updates unless you also use other 3rd party repos. Backup solution to backup /var/spool/imap above 150GB data

Hi We have an issue with one of our clients , they have a mail server with the /var/spool/imap partition as 150 GB . They need to take differential backup on to /backup partition ( a different HDD of total 250 GB space ) . We have tried dar , rsync, rdiff and impasync . But its is not sufficing the need as to take a lot of time and consumes a lot of I/O . Is there any back up solution that you can think of , that can work in this situation - open source or proprietary -- Regards Agnello D'souza

Enabling msg_get_queue()?

Noticing that the PHP4 binaries with CentOS4 are compiled with the option: --enable-sysvshm but not with the --enable-sysvmsg option. They are very closely related, and we'd like to use the msg_get_queue() function for an application cluster. Is there any reason why this is so? Is it too much to ask to have this added? centos 4.8 dvd on virtualbox x86_64

I just installed VirtualBox latest version on a new Win7 Pro x86_64 desktop, and tried to create a 64bit CentOS 4.8 install for doing some procedural testing... all install attempts hung at the samme place, shortly after grub, it hangs at... Dquot-cache hash table entries: 512 (order 0, 4096 bytes) sadly, I didn't capture the rest of the console output prior to that. 32bit 4.8 boots and installs just fine. CPU is a Intel Core2Duo E7600 which supposedly has VT-x. System is a Dell Optiplex 755 (Intel G45 chipset) anyone got a clue ?

Did I get that > correct? yes, centos (base+updates) offers exactly what's in RHEL. Centos won't rebuild stuff that's in epel, rpmforge or any other third party repo, these packages should work the same on rhel and centos precisely because centos aims to be as close to rhel as possible. Also note that 3.1.0 is the latest stable release of backuppc. This is the version that you installed from c5-testing. It's also the same version offered in epel. 3.1.0-5 from one repo is not necessarily better than 3.1.0-1 from another: it's the same upstream code, the -5 is only useful for comparing within a given repo.

Backuppc-updates on CentOS

Hi all, I installed BackupPC on one of my Centos 5.4-machines following the wiki at http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/BackupPC#head-725ed151d366bcf182cea92f765c373…, where BackupPC is installed from the c5-testing repo. root@mach012 ~/ [0]# rpm -qa backuppc backuppc-3.1.0-1.el5.centos root@mach012 ~/ [0]# Seeing how there's been some updates to BackupPC in the near past, I thought I'd run a yum update to get the updated package. That didn't work. So I searched pbone.net for a BackupPC package on CentOS5 but didn't find any. Doing the same search for RHEL5 gave me two packages (one for i386 and one for x86_64); v3.1.0-5. Looking more closely I saw that the RHEL5-packages were from epel, a repo one maybe shouldn't choose as a primary repo for ones CentOS-systems if you can help it. At least that's the impression I got from the various posts to this list. I thought all packages available from the prominent American upstream provider got a treatment from the CentOS crew? Am I wrong or am I missing something really basic, or some part of the CentOS philosophy here? Hi, I am running a VOIP application on Centos 5.3. It is a 16 core box with 12 G of mem and all what it does is passing packets. What happens is that at around 2K channels running g711 ( 64k) codec, all eth0 is used up and no more traffic can go through. I have checked google and it talked about interrupt scheduler. does anyone know how to configure the kernel to allow it to use all CPSs for socket transmission of UDP packets? Any pointer will be greatly appreciated. pete

I had a need on a centos 5.4 x86_64 box to try and run with a later totem. I desired to do this by source. After installing the packages below my system comes up, I thought everything was good. thunderbird comes up firefox comes up. totem works -------- however there seems to be an issue with closing or opening windows some random time later with all three programs. It gives the impression that X is hung. Keyboard no longer works - mouse moves but cannot click on anything. ssh into the box still works. I can kill the X server and start all up again for a random time then it looks like it hangs again. I am wondering if anyone knows what this might be - perhaps another package I need to update. I am also running a radeon 3200 driver with the Catalyst binary driver. Thanks for your thoughts. multi-seated configuration

is anyone using a multi-seated configuration with CentOS? I'm thinking about buying a two 2 headed nvidia card to run 4 separate monitors and 4 separate keyboards and mice. I don't mind using either proprietary or opensource nvidia drivers. I'm looking for more information regarding centos and multiseated configurations. I've read a bit about fedora and ubuntu with multiseating, but I haven't found much with CentOS. I'm fairly new to this so I would need pretty good documentation / hand holding to accomplish this. Any information would be helpful. -Andy

sudo for Virtual Machine Manager

I've done everything stated in the various guidance to get a regular user to use virt-manager (graphical Virtual Machine Manager) under CentOS 5.4 with KVM. Placing the user in the kvm group and changing permissions on several files to include kvm has not worked...the user still needs to enter the root password to use the graphical VMM. I thought of pressing sudo into service for this task. Anyone think this will work? Anyone got a better way? DaveM

What to backup?

Hi All, I am now working on a plan of what to backup from various servers that I have running I run Apache, so httpd.conf and /var/www/html I run Zimbra currently, so /opt/zimbra/store, /opt/zimbra/my.cnf and /opt/zimbra/db/ I run MySQL, so /etc/my.cnf and /var/lib/mysql Can I simply write a bash script to tar.gz these areas, scp them and put it in a cron job? Is there anything special that I have to do with MySQL since it is running? If helpful, I can take what I learn and update the Wiki if there is not already a procedure for doing these operations on it. -Jason

Maybe one of you has experienced something like this before. I have a host running CentOS5.3, x86_64 version with the standard qla2xxx driver. Both ports are recognized and show output in dmesg but they never find my storage device: qla2xxx 0000:07:00.1: LIP reset occured (f700). qla2xxx 0000:07:00.1: LIP occured (f700). qla2xxx 0000:07:00.1: LIP reset occured (f7f7). qla2xxx 0000:07:00.0: LOOP UP detected (4 Gbps). qla2xxx 0000:07:00.0: SNS scan failed -- assuming zero-entry result... qla2xxx 0000:07:00.1: LOOP UP detected (4 Gbps). qla2xxx 0000:07:00.1: SNS scan failed -- assuming zero-entry result... The storage device is a virtual tape library on an HP d2d server. On the storage device I have configured the virtual tape drive and controller. I've also added the WWNs from the server and storage into a zone on our fiber switch, and made the zone config live. Anyone have some suggestions where I can start troubleshooting this?

To this end , I tried to capture it through 'tcpdump' but didn't success . I read this segment assembly language code but it is somewhat difficult to decode . Can you please let me know what CentOS decompiler is suitable for this case ? recover data on usb drive

Hi gang I just did a really stupid thing... I did fdisk and removed the ext3 partition on my 500GB external USB drive, thinking I was working on a usb stick instead. ugh. then I did 'mkdosfs' on it. ugh ugh. Before messing with it any more at all, what good ideas can you all suggest for trying to get my data back? Please don't tell me it's all gone (though I"m afraid it is). this was a backup from a Lacie 2bigNetwork that's off for repair, so if I really have trashed it my family is gonna kill me. :( Especially my son who had all his anime on the 2big. we plan to change network switch and firewall machine to new one. Network engineer told me after switch and firewall equipment change I may need run 'arp ..." to clear out cache on every CENTOS servers due to switch and firewall MAC address change. we have 30 to 40 CENTOS 4.X and 5.X my affect. my question are: 1. does switch and firewall equipment change need LINUX client clear cache? 2. if needed, how to clear cache and get new info about switch and firewall?
